Chapter 30
The Words of Agur
1
[These are] the words of Agur son of Jakeh— the burden that this man declared to Ithiel: “I am weary, O God, and worn out.
𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤉 𐤀𐤂𐤅𐤓 𐤁𐤍 𐤉𐤒𐤄 𐤄𐤌𐤔𐤀 𐤄𐤂𐤁𐤓 𐤍𐤀𐤌 𐤋𐤀𐤉𐤕𐤉𐤀𐤋 𐤋𐤀𐤉𐤕𐤉𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤀𐤊𐤋
דִּבְרֵ֤י׀ אָג֥וּר בִּן־ יָקֶ֗ה הַמַּ֫שָּׂ֥א הַ֭גֶּבֶר נְאֻ֣ם לְאִֽיתִיאֵ֑ל לְאִ֖יתִיאֵ֣ל וְאֻכָֽל׃ diḇ·rê ’ā·ḡūr bin- yā·qeh ham·maś·śā hag·ge·ḇer nə·’um lə·’î·ṯî·’êl lə·’î·ṯî·’êl wə·’u·ḵāl — WLC · 1

Surely I [am] the most ignorant of men, and I lack the understanding of a man

I have not learned wisdom, and I have no knowledge… of the Holy One.

וְלֹֽא־ לָמַ֥דְתִּי חָכְמָ֑ה וְדַ֖עַת אֵדָֽע׃ קְדֹשִׁ֣ים wə·lō- lā·maḏ·tî ḥāḵ·māh wə·ḏa·‘aṯ ’ê·ḏā‘ qə·ḏō·šîm — WLC · 3

Who has ascended to heaven and come down? Who has gathered the wind in His hands? Who has bound up the waters in His cloak? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is His name, and what is the name of His Son— surely you know!

Every word of God is flawless; He is a shield to those who take refuge in Him.

כָּל־ אִמְרַ֣ת אֱל֣וֹהַּ צְרוּפָ֑ה ה֝֗וּא מָגֵ֥ן לַֽחֹסִ֥ים בּֽוֹ׃ kāl- ’im·raṯ ’ĕ·lō·w·ah ṣə·rū·p̄āh hū mā·ḡên la·ḥō·sîm bōw — WLC · 5

Do not add to His words, lest He rebuke you and prove you a liar.

אַל־ תּ֥וֹסְףְּ עַל־ דְּבָרָ֑יו פֶּן־ יוֹכִ֖יחַ בְּךָ֣ וְנִכְזָֽבְתָּ׃פ ’al- tō·wsp ‘al- də·ḇā·rāw pen- yō·w·ḵî·aḥ bə·ḵā wə·niḵ·zā·ḇə·tā — WLC · 6

Two things I ask… of You— do not refuse me before I die:

שְׁ֭תַּיִם שָׁאַ֣לְתִּי מֵאִתָּ֑ךְ מִ֝מֶּ֗נִּי אַל־ תִּמְנַ֥ע בְּטֶ֣רֶם אָמֽוּת׃ šə·ta·yim šā·’al·tî mê·’it·tāḵ mim·men·nî ’al- tim·na‘ bə·ṭe·rem ’ā·mūṯ — WLC · 7

Keep falsehood and deceitful words far from me. Give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with the bread that is my portion.

שָׁ֤וְא׀ כָּזָ֡ב וּֽדְבַר־ הַרְחֵ֬ק מִמֶּ֗נִּי תִּֽתֶּן־ לִ֑י אַל־ רֵ֣אשׁ וָ֭עֹשֶׁר הַ֝טְרִיפֵ֗נִי לֶ֣חֶם חֻקִּֽי׃ šāw kā·zāḇ ū·ḏə·ḇar- har·ḥêq mim·men·nî tit·ten- lî ’al- rêš wā·‘ō·šer haṭ·rî·p̄ê·nî le·ḥem ḥuq·qî — WLC · 8

Otherwise, I may have too much and deny You, saying, ‘Who is the LORD?’ Or I may become poor and steal, profaning the name of my God.

פֶּ֥ן אֶשְׂבַּ֨ע׀ וְכִחַשְׁתִּי֮ וְאָמַ֗רְתִּי מִ֥י יְה֫וָ֥ה וּפֶֽן־ אִוָּרֵ֥שׁ וְגָנַ֑בְתִּי וְ֝תָפַ֗שְׂתִּי שֵׁ֣ם אֱלֹהָֽי׃פ pen ’eś·ba‘ wə·ḵi·ḥaš·tî wə·’ā·mar·tî mî Yah·weh ū·p̄en- ’iw·wā·rêš wə·ḡā·naḇ·tî wə·ṯā·p̄aś·tî šêm ’ĕ·lō·hāy — WLC · 9

Do not slander a servant to his master, or he will curse you, and you will bear the guilt.

אַל־ תַּלְשֵׁ֣ן עֶ֭בֶד אֶל־ אֲדֹנוֹ פֶּֽן־ יְקַלֶּלְךָ֥ וְאָשָֽׁמְתָּ׃ ’al- tal·šên ‘e·ḇeḏ ’el- ʾă·ḏō·nō pen- yə·qal·lel·ḵā wə·’ā·šā·mə·tā — WLC · 10

There is a generation of those who curse their fathers and do not bless their mothers.

דּ֭וֹר יְקַלֵּ֑ל וְאֶת־ אָבִ֣יו לֹ֣א יְבָרֵֽךְ׃ אִ֝מּ֗וֹ dō·wr yə·qal·lêl wə·’eṯ- ’ā·ḇîw lō yə·ḇā·rêḵ ’im·mōw — WLC · 11

There is a generation of those who are pure in their own eyes vvv and yet unwashed of their filth.

דּ֭וֹר טָה֣וֹר בְּעֵינָ֑יו לֹ֣א רֻחָֽץ׃ וּ֝מִצֹּאָת֗וֹ dō·wr ṭā·hō·wr bə·‘ê·nāw lō ru·ḥāṣ ū·miṣ·ṣō·’ā·ṯōw — WLC · 12

There is a generation— how haughty are their eyes and pretentious are their glances—
𐤃𐤅𐤓 𐤌𐤄 𐤓𐤌𐤅 𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉𐤅 𐤉𐤍𐤔𐤀𐤅 𐤅𐤏𐤐𐤏𐤐𐤉𐤅
דּ֭וֹר מָה־ רָמ֣וּ עֵינָ֑יו יִנָּשֵֽׂאוּ׃ וְ֝עַפְעַפָּ֗יו dō·wr māh- rā·mū ‘ê·nāw yin·nā·śê·’ū wə·‘ap̄·‘ap·pāw — WLC · 13

there is a generation whose teeth are swords and whose jaws are knives, devouring the oppressed from the earth and the needy from [among] men.

דּ֤וֹר׀ שִׁנָּיו֮ חֲרָב֣וֹת מְֽתַלְּעֹ֫תָ֥יו וּֽמַאֲכָל֪וֹת לֶאֱכֹ֣ל עֲנִיִּ֣ים מֵאֶ֑רֶץ וְ֝אֶבְיוֹנִ֗ים מֵאָדָֽם׃פ dō·wr šin·nāw ḥă·rā·ḇō·wṯ mə·ṯal·lə·‘ō·ṯāw ū·ma·’ă·ḵā·lō·wṯ le·’ĕ·ḵōl ‘ă·nî·yîm mê·’e·reṣ wə·’eḇ·yō·w·nîm mê·’ā·ḏām — WLC · 14

The leech has two daughters: Give [and] Give. There are three [things that] are never satisfied, four [that] never say, ‘Enough!’:

לַֽעֲלוּקָ֨ה׀ שְׁתֵּ֥י בָנוֹת֮ הַ֤ב׀ הַ֥ב הֵ֭נָּה שָׁל֣וֹשׁ לֹ֣א תִשְׂבַּ֑עְנָה אַ֝רְבַּ֗ע לֹא־ אָ֥מְרוּ הֽוֹן׃ la·‘ă·lū·qāh šə·tê ḇā·nō·wṯ haḇ haḇ hên·nāh šā·lō·wōš lō ṯiś·ba‘·nāh ’ar·ba‘ lō- ’ā·mə·rū hō·wn — WLC · 15

Sheol, the barren womb, land never satisfied with water, and fire that never says, ‘Enough!’

שְׁאוֹל֮ וְעֹ֪צֶ֫ר רָ֥חַם אֶ֭רֶץ לֹא־ שָׂ֣בְעָה מַּ֑יִם וְ֝אֵ֗שׁ לֹא־ אָ֥מְרָה הֽוֹן׃ šə·’ō·wl wə·‘ō·ṣer rā·ḥam ’e·reṣ lō- śā·ḇə·‘āh ma·yim wə·’êš lō- ’ā·mə·rāh hō·wn — WLC · 16

As for the eye [that] mocks a father and scorns obedience to a mother, may the ravens of the valley pluck it out and young vultures devour it.

עַ֤יִן׀ תִּֽלְעַ֣ג לְאָב֮ וְתָב֪וּז לִֽיקֲּהַ֫ת־ אֵ֥ם עֹרְבֵי־ נַ֑חַל יִקְּר֥וּהָ בְנֵי־ נָֽשֶׁר׃פ וְֽיֹאכְל֥וּהָ ‘a·yin til·‘aḡ lə·’āḇ wə·ṯā·ḇūz lîq·qă·haṯ- ’êm ‘ō·rə·ḇê- na·ḥal yiq·qə·rū·hā ḇə·nê- nā·šer wə·yō·ḵə·lū·hā — WLC · 17

There are three [things] too wonderful for me, four that I cannot understand:

הֵ֭מָּה שְׁלֹשָׁ֣ה נִפְלְא֣וּ מִמֶּ֑נִּי וְאַרְבָּע לֹ֣א יְדַעְתִּֽים׃ hêm·māh šə·lō·šāh nip̄·lə·’ū mim·men·nî wə·ʾar·bå̄ʿ lō yə·ḏa‘·tîm — WLC · 18

the way of an eagle in the sky, the way of a snake on a rock, the way of a ship vvv at sea, and the way of a man with a maiden.

דֶּ֤רֶךְ הַנֶּ֨שֶׁר׀ בַּשָּׁמַיִם֮ דֶּ֥רֶךְ נָחָ֗שׁ עֲלֵ֫י צ֥וּר דֶּֽרֶךְ־ אֳנִיָּ֥ה בְלֶב־ יָ֑ם וְדֶ֖רֶךְ גֶּ֣בֶר בְּעַלְמָֽה׃ de·reḵ han·ne·šer baš·šā·ma·yim de·reḵ nā·ḥāš ‘ă·lê ṣūr de·reḵ- ’o·nî·yāh ḇə·leḇ- yām wə·ḏe·reḵ ge·ḇer bə·‘al·māh — WLC · 19

This is the way of an adulteress…: She eats and wipes her mouth and says, ‘I have done nothing wrong.’

כֵּ֤ן׀ דֶּ֥רֶךְ אִשָּׁ֗ה מְנָ֫אָ֥פֶת אָ֭כְלָה וּמָ֣חֲתָה פִ֑יהָ וְ֝אָמְרָ֗ה פָעַ֥לְתִּי לֹֽא־ אָֽוֶן׃פ kên de·reḵ ’iš·šāh mə·nā·’ā·p̄eṯ ’ā·ḵə·lāh ū·mā·ḥă·ṯāh p̄î·hā wə·’ā·mə·rāh p̄ā·‘al·tî lō- ’ā·wen — WLC · 20

Under three things the earth trembles, under four it cannot… bear up:

- a servant who becomes king, a fool who is filled with food,

תַּֽחַת־ עֶ֭בֶד כִּ֣י יִמְל֑וֹךְ וְ֝נָבָ֗ל כִּ֣י יִֽשְׂבַּֽע־ לָֽחֶם׃ ta·ḥaṯ- ‘e·ḇeḏ kî yim·lō·wḵ wə·nā·ḇāl kî yiś·ba‘- lā·ḥem — WLC · 22

- an unloved woman who marries, and a maidservant who supplants her mistress.

תַּ֣חַת שְׂ֭נוּאָה כִּ֣י תִבָּעֵ֑ל וְ֝שִׁפְחָ֗ה כִּֽי־ תִירַ֥שׁ גְּבִרְתָּֽהּ׃פ ta·ḥaṯ śə·nû·ʾāh kî ṯib·bā·‘êl wə·šip̄·ḥāh kî- ṯî·raš gə·ḇir·tāh — WLC · 23

Four things on earth… are small, yet they are exceedingly wise:

אַרְבָּ֣עָה אָ֑רֶץ וְ֝הֵ֗מָּה קְטַנֵּי־ הֵ֭ם מְחֻכָּמִֽים׃ חֲכָמִ֥ים ’ar·bā·‘āh ’ā·reṣ wə·hêm·māh qə·ṭan·nê- hêm mə·ḥuk·kā·mîm ḥă·ḵā·mîm — WLC · 24

The ants are creatures of little strength, yet they store up their food in the summer;

the rock badgers are creatures of little power, yet they make their homes in the rocks;

the locusts have no king, yet they all advance in formation;

and the lizard can be caught in one’s hands, yet it [is found] in the palaces of kings.

שְׂ֭מָמִית תְּתַפֵּ֑שׂ בְּיָדַ֣יִם וְ֝הִ֗יא בְּהֵ֣יכְלֵי מֶֽלֶךְ׃פ śə·mā·mît̲ tə·ṯap·pêś bə·yā·ḏa·yim wə·hî bə·hê·ḵə·lê me·leḵ — WLC · 28

There are three things that are stately in their stride, and four that are impressive in their walk:

הֵ֭מָּה שְׁלֹשָׁ֣ה מֵיטִ֣יבֵי צָ֑עַד וְ֝אַרְבָּעָ֗ה מֵיטִ֥בֵי לָֽכֶת׃ hêm·māh šə·lō·šāh mê·ṭî·ḇê ṣā·‘aḏ wə·’ar·bā·‘āh mê·ṭi·ḇê lā·ḵeṯ — WLC · 29

a lion, mighty among beasts, refusing to retreat before anything;

a strutting rooster…;… a he-goat; and a king with his army around him.

זַרְזִ֣יר מָתְנַ֣יִם אוֹ־ תָ֑יִשׁ וּ֝מֶ֗לֶךְ אַלְק֥וּם עִמּֽוֹ׃ zar·zîr mā·ṯə·na·yim ’ōw- ṯā·yiš ū·me·leḵ ’al·qūm ‘im·mōw — WLC · 31

If you have foolishly exalted yourself or if you have plotted evil, put your hand over your mouth.

אִם־ נָבַ֥לְתָּ בְהִתְנַשֵּׂ֑א וְאִם־ זַ֝מּ֗וֹתָ יָ֣ד לְפֶֽה׃ ’im- nā·ḇal·tā ḇə·hiṯ·naś·śê wə·’im- zam·mō·w·ṯā yāḏ lə·p̄eh — WLC · 32

For as the churning of milk yields butter, and the twisting of the nose draws blood, so the stirring of anger brings forth strife.”
