Chapter 9

The Way of Wisdom

1

Wisdom has built her house; she has carved out her seven pillars.

𐤇𐤊𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤁𐤍𐤕𐤄 𐤁𐤉𐤕𐤄 𐤇𐤑𐤁𐤄 𐤔𐤁𐤏𐤄 𐤏𐤌𐤅𐤃𐤉𐤄

חָ֭כְמוֹת בָּנְתָ֣ה בֵיתָ֑הּ חָצְבָ֖ה שִׁבְעָֽה׃ עַמּוּדֶ֣יהָ ḥā·ḵə·mō·wṯ bā·nə·ṯāh ḇê·ṯāh ḥā·ṣə·ḇāh šiḇ·‘āh ‘am·mū·ḏe·hāWLC · 1

She has prepared her meat [and] mixed her wine; she has also set her table.

𐤈𐤁𐤇𐤄 𐤈𐤁𐤇𐤄 𐤌𐤎𐤊𐤄 𐤉𐤉𐤍𐤄 𐤀𐤐 𐤏𐤓𐤊𐤄 𐤔𐤋𐤇𐤍𐤄

טָבְחָ֣ה טִ֭בְחָהּ מָסְכָ֣ה יֵינָ֑הּ אַ֝֗ף עָֽרְכָ֥ה שֻׁלְחָנָֽהּ׃ ṭā·ḇə·ḥāh ṭiḇ·ḥāh mā·sə·ḵāh yê·nāh ’ap̄ ‘ā·rə·ḵāh šul·ḥā·nāhWLC · 2

She has sent out her maidservants; she calls out from vvv the heights of the city.

𐤔𐤋𐤇𐤄 𐤍𐤏𐤓𐤕𐤉𐤄 𐤕𐤒𐤓𐤀 𐤏𐤋 𐤂𐤐𐤉 𐤌𐤓𐤌𐤉 𐤒𐤓𐤕

שָֽׁלְחָ֣ה נַעֲרֹתֶ֣יהָ תִקְרָ֑א עַל־ גַּ֝פֵּ֗י מְרֹ֣מֵי קָֽרֶת׃ šā·lə·ḥāh na·‘ă·rō·ṯe·hā ṯiq·rā ‘al- gap·pê mə·rō·mê qā·reṯWLC · 3

“Whoever [is] simple, let him turn in here!” she says to him who lacks judgment.

𐤌𐤉 𐤐𐤕𐤉 𐤉𐤎𐤓 𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤄 𐤋𐤅 𐤇𐤎𐤓 𐤋𐤁

מִי־ פֶ֭תִי יָסֻ֣ר הֵ֑נָּה אָ֣מְרָה לּֽוֹ׃ חֲסַר־ לֵ֝֗ב mî- p̄e·ṯî yā·sur hên·nāh ’ā·mə·rāh lōw ḥă·sar- lêḇWLC · 4

“Come, eat my bread and drink the wine I have mixed.

𐤋𐤊𐤅 𐤋𐤇𐤌𐤅 𐤁𐤋𐤇𐤌𐤉 𐤅𐤔𐤕𐤅 𐤁𐤉𐤉𐤍 𐤌𐤎𐤊𐤕𐤉

לְ֭כוּ לַחֲמ֣וּ בְֽלַחֲמִ֑י וּ֝שְׁת֗וּ בְּיַ֣יִן מָסָֽכְתִּי׃ lə·ḵū la·ḥă·mū ḇə·la·ḥă·mî ū·šə·ṯū bə·ya·yin mā·sā·ḵə·tîWLC · 5

Leave your folly behind, and you will live; walk in the way of understanding.”

𐤐𐤕𐤀𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤆𐤁𐤅 𐤅𐤇𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤀𐤔𐤓𐤅 𐤁𐤃𐤓𐤊 𐤁𐤉𐤍𐤄

פְתָאיִ֣ם עִזְב֣וּ וִֽחְי֑וּ וְ֝אִשְׁר֗וּ בְּדֶ֣רֶךְ בִּינָֽה׃ p̄ə·ṯā·yim ‘iz·ḇū wiḥ·yū wə·’iš·rū bə·ḏe·reḵ bî·nāhWLC · 6

He who corrects a mocker brings shame on himself; he who rebukes a wicked [man] taints himself.

𐤉𐤎𐤓 𐤋𐤑 𐤋𐤒𐤇 𐤒𐤋𐤅𐤍 𐤋𐤅 𐤅𐤌𐤅𐤊𐤉𐤇 𐤋𐤓𐤔𐤏 𐤌𐤅𐤌𐤅

יֹ֤סֵ֨ר׀ לֵ֗ץ לֹקֵ֣חַֽ קָל֑וֹן ל֣וֹ וּמוֹכִ֖יחַ לְרָשָׁ֣ע מוּמֽוֹ׃ yō·sêr lêṣ lō·qê·aḥ qā·lō·wn lōw ū·mō·w·ḵî·aḥ lə·rā·šā‘ mū·mōwWLC · 7

Do not rebuke a mocker, or he will hate you; rebuke a wise [man], and he will love you.

𐤀𐤋 𐤕𐤅𐤊𐤇 𐤋𐤑 𐤐𐤍 𐤉𐤔𐤍𐤀𐤊 𐤄𐤅𐤊𐤇 𐤋𐤇𐤊𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤄𐤁𐤊

אַל־ תּ֣וֹכַח לֵ֭ץ פֶּן־ יִשְׂנָאֶ֑ךָּ הוֹכַ֥ח לְ֝חָכָ֗ם וְיֶאֱהָבֶֽךָּ׃ ’al- tō·w·ḵaḥ lêṣ pen- yiś·nā·’e·kā hō·w·ḵaḥ lə·ḥā·ḵām wə·ye·’ĕ·hā·ḇe·kāWLC · 8

Instruct a wise man, and he will be wiser still; teach a righteous man, and he will increase [his] learning.

𐤕𐤍 𐤋𐤇𐤊𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤇𐤊𐤌 𐤏𐤅𐤃 𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤏 𐤋𐤑𐤃𐤉𐤒 𐤅𐤉𐤅𐤎𐤐 𐤋𐤒𐤇𐤐

תֵּ֣ן לְ֭חָכָם וְיֶחְכַּם־ ע֑וֹד הוֹדַ֥ע לְ֝צַדִּ֗יק וְי֣וֹסֶף לֶֽקַח׃פ tên lə·ḥā·ḵām wə·yeḥ·kam- ‘ō·wḏ hō·w·ḏa‘ lə·ṣad·dîq wə·yō·w·sep̄ le·qaḥWLC · 9

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.

𐤉𐤓𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤕𐤇𐤋𐤕 𐤇𐤊𐤌𐤄 𐤅𐤃𐤏𐤕 𐤒𐤃𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤉𐤍𐤄

יִרְאַ֣ת יְהוָ֑ה תְּחִלַּ֣ת חָ֭כְמָה וְדַ֖עַת קְדֹשִׁ֣ים בִּינָֽה׃ yir·’aṯ Yah·weh tə·ḥil·laṯ ḥāḵ·māh wə·ḏa·‘aṯ qə·ḏō·šîm bî·nāhWLC · 10

11

For through [wisdom] your days will be multiplied, and years will be added to your life.

𐤊𐤉 𐤁𐤉 𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤊 𐤉𐤓𐤁𐤅 𐤔𐤍𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤅𐤎𐤉𐤐𐤅 𐤇𐤉𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤊

כִּי־ בִ֭י יָמֶ֑יךָ יִרְבּ֣וּ שְׁנ֣וֹת וְיוֹסִ֥יפוּ חַיִּֽים׃ לְּ֝ךָ֗ kî- ḇî yā·me·ḵā yir·bū šə·nō·wṯ wə·yō·w·sî·p̄ū ḥay·yîm lə·ḵāWLC · 11

12

If you are wise, you are wise to your own advantage; but if you scoff, you alone will bear [the consequences].

𐤀𐤌 𐤇𐤊𐤌𐤕 𐤇𐤊𐤌𐤕 𐤋𐤊 𐤅𐤋𐤑𐤕 𐤋𐤁𐤃𐤊 𐤕𐤔𐤀

אִם־ חָ֭כַמְתָּ חָכַ֣מְתָּ לָּ֑ךְ וְ֝לַ֗צְתָּ לְֽבַדְּךָ֥ תִשָּֽׂא׃ ’im- ḥā·ḵam·tā ḥā·ḵam·tā lāḵ wə·laṣ·tā lə·ḇad·də·ḵā ṯiś·śāWLC · 12

The Way of Folly

The woman [named] Folly is loud; [she is] naive and knows nothing…

𐤀𐤔𐤕 𐤊𐤎𐤉𐤋𐤅𐤕 𐤄𐤌𐤉𐤄 𐤐𐤕𐤉𐤅𐤕 𐤉𐤃𐤏𐤄 𐤅𐤁𐤋 𐤌𐤄

אֵ֣שֶׁת כְּ֭סִילוּת הֹֽמִיָּ֑ה פְּ֝תַיּ֗וּת יָ֥דְעָה וּבַל־ מָּֽה׃ ’ê·šeṯ kə·sî·lūṯ hō·mî·yāh pə·ṯay·yūṯ yā·ḏə·‘āh ū·ḇal- māhWLC · 13

14

She sits at the door of her house, on a seat in the heights of the city,

𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤁𐤄 𐤋𐤐𐤕𐤇 𐤁𐤉𐤕𐤄 𐤏𐤋 𐤊𐤎𐤀 𐤌𐤓𐤌𐤉 𐤒𐤓𐤕

וְֽ֭יָשְׁבָה לְפֶ֣תַח בֵּיתָ֑הּ עַל־ כִּ֝סֵּ֗א מְרֹ֣מֵי קָֽרֶת׃ wə·yā·šə·ḇāh lə·p̄e·ṯaḥ bê·ṯāh ‘al- kis·sê mə·rō·mê qā·reṯWLC · 14

calling out to those who pass by,… who make their paths {straight}.

𐤋𐤒𐤓𐤀 𐤋𐤏𐤁𐤓𐤉 𐤃𐤓𐤊 𐤄𐤌𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤓𐤇𐤅𐤕𐤌

לִקְרֹ֥א לְעֹֽבְרֵי־ דָ֑רֶךְ הַֽ֝מְיַשְּׁרִ֗ים אֹֽרְחוֹתָֽם׃ liq·rō lə·‘ō·ḇə·rê- ḏā·reḵ ham·yaš·šə·rîm ’ō·rə·ḥō·w·ṯāmWLC · 15

16

“Whoever [is] simple, let him turn in here!” she says to him who lacks judgment.

17

“Stolen water is sweet, and bread [eaten] in secret is tasty!”

𐤂𐤍𐤅𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤌𐤕𐤒𐤅 𐤅𐤋𐤇𐤌 𐤎𐤕𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤍𐤏𐤌

גְּנוּבִ֥ים מַֽיִם־ יִמְתָּ֑קוּ וְלֶ֖חֶם סְתָרִ֣ים יִנְעָֽם׃ gə·nū·ḇîm ma·yim- yim·tā·qū wə·le·ḥem sə·ṯā·rîm yin·‘āmWLC · 17

18

But they do not know that the dead are there, that her guests [are] in the depths of Sheol.

𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤃𐤏 𐤊𐤉 𐤓𐤐𐤀𐤉𐤌 𐤔𐤌 𐤒𐤓𐤀𐤉𐤄𐤐 𐤁𐤏𐤌𐤒𐤉 𐤔𐤀𐤅𐤋

וְֽלֹא־ יָ֭דַע כִּֽי־ רְפָאִ֣ים שָׁ֑ם קְרֻאֶֽיהָ׃פ בְּעִמְקֵ֖י שְׁא֣וֹל wə·lō- yā·ḏa‘ kî- rə·p̄ā·’îm šām qə·ru·’e·hā bə·‘im·qê šə·’ō·wlWLC · 18
