Chapter 19
The Burden against Egypt
1
[This is] the burden against Egypt: Behold, the LORD rides on a swift cloud; He is coming to Egypt. The idols of Egypt will tremble before Him, and the hearts of the Egyptians will melt within them.

“So I will incite Egyptian against Egyptian; [brother] will fight against brother, [neighbor] against neighbor, city against city, [and] kingdom against kingdom.

וְסִכְסַכְתִּ֤י מִצְרַ֙יִם֙ בְּמִצְרַ֔יִם אִישׁ־ וְנִלְחֲמ֥וּ בְּאָחִ֖יו וְאִ֣ישׁ בְּרֵעֵ֑הוּ עִ֣יר בְּעִ֔יר מַמְלָכָ֖ה בְּמַמְלָכָֽה׃ wə·siḵ·saḵ·tî miṣ·ra·yim bə·miṣ·ra·yim ’îš- wə·nil·ḥă·mū bə·’ā·ḥîw wə·’îš bə·rê·‘ê·hū ‘îr bə·‘îr mam·lā·ḵāh bə·mam·lā·ḵāh — WLC · 2

Then the spirit of the Egyptians will be emptied out from among them, and I will frustrate their plans, so that they will resort to idols and spirits of the dead,… to mediums and spiritists.

רֽוּחַ־ מִצְרַ֙יִם֙ וְנָבְקָ֤ה בְּקִרְבּ֔וֹ אֲבַלֵּ֑עַ וַעֲצָת֖וֹ וְדָרְשׁ֤וּ אֶל־ הָֽאֱלִילִים֙ וְאֶל־ הָ֣אִטִּ֔ים וְאֶל־ הָאֹב֖וֹת וְאֶל־ הַיִּדְּעֹנִֽים׃ rū·aḥ- miṣ·ra·yim wə·nā·ḇə·qāh bə·qir·bōw ’ă·ḇal·lê·a‘ wa·‘ă·ṣā·ṯōw wə·ḏā·rə·šū ’el- hā·’ĕ·lî·lîm wə·’el- hā·’iṭ·ṭîm wə·’el- hā·’ō·ḇō·wṯ wə·’el- hay·yid·də·‘ō·nîm — WLC · 3

I will deliver the Egyptians into the hands of a harsh master, and a fierce king will rule over them,” declares the Lord GOD of Hosts.

וְסִכַּרְתִּי֙ אֶת־ מִצְרַ֔יִם בְּיַ֖ד קָשֶׁ֑ה אֲדֹנִ֣ים עַז֙ וּמֶ֤לֶךְ יִמְשָׁל־ בָּ֔ם נְאֻ֥ם הָאָד֖וֹן יְהוָ֥ה צְבָאֽוֹת׃ wə·sik·kar·tî ’eṯ- miṣ·ra·yim bə·yaḏ qā·šeh ’ă·ḏō·nîm ‘az ū·me·leḵ yim·šāl- bām nə·’um hā·’ā·ḏō·wn Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ — WLC · 4

The waters of the [Nile] will dry up, and the riverbed will be parched and empty.

מַ֖יִם מֵֽהַיָּ֑ם וְיָבֵֽשׁ׃ וְנָהָ֖ר יֶחֱרַ֥ב וְנִשְּׁתוּ־ ma·yim mê·hay·yām wə·yā·ḇêš wə·nā·hār ye·ḥĕ·raḇ wə·niš·šə·ṯū- — WLC · 5

The canals will stink; the streams of Egypt will trickle and dry up; the reeds and rushes will wither.

נְהָר֔וֹת וְהֶאֶזְנִ֣יחוּ יְאֹרֵ֣י מָצ֑וֹר דָּלֲל֥וּ וְחָרְב֖וּ קָנֶ֥ה וָס֖וּף קָמֵֽלוּ׃ nə·hā·rō·wṯ wə·he·’ez·nî·ḥū yə·’ō·rê mā·ṣō·wr dā·lă·lū wə·ḥā·rə·ḇū qā·neh wā·sūp̄ qā·mê·lū — WLC · 6

The bulrushes by the Nile, by the mouth of the river, and all the fields sown along the Nile, will wither, blow away, and be no [more].

עָר֥וֹת עַל־ יְא֖וֹר עַל־ פִּ֣י יְא֑וֹר וְכֹל֙ מִזְרַ֣ע יְא֔וֹר יִיבַ֥שׁ נִדַּ֖ף וְאֵינֶֽנּוּ׃ ‘ā·rō·wṯ ‘al- yə·’ō·wr ‘al- pî yə·’ō·wr wə·ḵōl miz·ra‘ yə·’ō·wr yî·ḇaš nid·dap̄ wə·’ê·nen·nū — WLC · 7

Then the fishermen will mourn, all who cast a hook into the Nile will lament, and those who spread nets on… the waters will pine away.

The workers in flax will be dismayed, and the weavers of fine linen will turn pale.

The workers in cloth will be dejected, and all the hired workers will be sick at heart.

The princes of Zoan are mere fools; Pharaoh’s wise counselors give senseless advice. How can you say to Pharaoh, “I am one of the wise, a son of eastern kings”?

שָׂ֣רֵי צֹ֔עַן אַךְ־ אֱוִלִים֙ פַרְעֹ֔ה חַכְמֵי֙ עֵצָ֖ה נִבְעָרָ֑ה יֹעֲצֵ֣י אֵ֚יךְ תֹּאמְר֣וּ אֶל־ פַּרְעֹ֔ה אֲנִ֖י בֶּן־ חֲכָמִ֥ים בֶּן־ קֶֽדֶם׃ מַלְכֵי־ śā·rê ṣō·‘an ’aḵ- ’ĕ·wi·lîm p̄ar·‘ōh ḥaḵ·mê ‘ê·ṣāh niḇ·‘ā·rāh yō·‘ă·ṣê ’êḵ tō·mə·rū ’el- par·‘ōh ’ă·nî ben- ḥă·ḵā·mîm ben- qe·ḏem mal·ḵê- — WLC · 11

Where are your wise men now? Let them tell… you and reveal what the LORD of Hosts has planned against Egypt.

אַיָּם֙ חֲכָמֶ֔יךָ אֵפ֣וֹא וְיַגִּ֥ידוּ נָ֖א לָ֑ךְ וְיֵ֣דְע֔וּ מַה־ יְהוָ֥ה צְבָא֖וֹת יָּעַ֛ץ עַל־ מִצְרָֽיִם׃ ’ay·yām ḥă·ḵā·me·ḵā ’ê·p̄ō·w wə·yag·gî·ḏū nā lāḵ wə·yê·ḏə·‘ū mah- Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ yā·‘aṣ ‘al- miṣ·rā·yim — WLC · 12

The princes of Zoan have become fools; the princes of Memphis are deceived. The cornerstones of her tribes have led Egypt astray. -

שָׂ֣רֵי צֹ֔עַן נֽוֹאֲלוּ֙ שָׂ֣רֵי נֹ֑ף נִשְּׁא֖וּ פִּנַּ֥ת שְׁבָטֶֽיהָ׃ מִצְרַ֖יִם הִתְע֥וּ אֶת־ śā·rê ṣō·‘an nō·w·’ă·lū śā·rê nōp̄ niš·šə·’ū pin·naṯ šə·ḇā·ṭe·hā miṣ·ra·yim hiṯ·‘ū ’eṯ- — WLC · 13

The LORD has poured into her a spirit of confusion. Egypt has been led astray in all she does, as a drunkard staggers through his own vomit.

יְהוָ֛ה מָסַ֥ךְ בְּקִרְבָּ֖הּ ר֣וּחַ עִוְעִ֑ים מִצְרַ֙יִם֙ וְהִתְע֤וּ אֶת־ בְּכָֽל־ מַעֲשֵׂ֔הוּ שִׁכּ֖וֹר כְּהִתָּע֥וֹת בְּקִיאֽוֹ׃ Yah·weh mā·saḵ bə·qir·bāh rū·aḥ ‘iw·‘îm miṣ·ra·yim wə·hiṯ·‘ū ’eṯ- bə·ḵāl ma·‘ă·śê·hū šik·kō·wr kə·hit·tā·‘ō·wṯ bə·qî·’ōw — WLC · 14

There is nothing Egypt can do— - head or tail, palm or reed.

A Blessing upon the Earth

In that day the Egyptians will be like women. They will tremble with fear beneath the uplifted hand of the LORD of Hosts, when He brandishes it against them.

הַה֔וּא בַּיּ֣וֹם מִצְרַ֖יִם יִֽהְיֶ֥ה כַּנָּשִׁ֑ים וְחָרַ֣ד׀ וּפָחַ֗ד מִפְּנֵי֙ תְּנוּפַת֙ יַד־ יְהוָ֣ה צְבָא֔וֹת ה֖וּא מֵנִ֥יף אֲשֶׁר־ עָלָֽיו׃ ha·hū bay·yō·wm miṣ·ra·yim yih·yeh kan·nā·šîm wə·ḥā·raḏ ū·p̄ā·ḥaḏ mip·pə·nê tə·nū·p̄aṯ yaḏ- Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ hū mê·nîp̄ ’ă·šer- ‘ā·lāw — WLC · 16

- The land of Judah will bring terror to Egypt; whenever Judah is mentioned, - Egypt will tremble over what the LORD of Hosts - has planned… against it.

וְ֠הָיְתָה אַדְמַ֨ת יְהוּדָ֤ה לְחָגָּ֔א לְמִצְרַ֙יִם֙ כֹּל֩ אֲשֶׁ֨ר יַזְכִּ֥יר אֹתָ֛הּ אֵלָ֖יו יִפְחָ֑ד מִפְּנֵ֗י יְהוָ֣ה צְבָא֔וֹת אֲשֶׁר־ ה֖וּא עֲצַת֙ יוֹעֵ֥ץ עָלָֽיו׃ס wə·hā·yə·ṯāh ’aḏ·maṯ yə·hū·ḏāh lə·ḥāg·gā lə·miṣ·ra·yim kōl ’ă·šer yaz·kîr ’ō·ṯāh ’ê·lāw yip̄·ḥāḏ mip·pə·nê Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ ’ă·šer- hū ‘ă·ṣaṯ yō·w·‘êṣ ‘ā·lāw — WLC · 17

In that… day five cities in the land of Egypt will speak the language of Canaan and swear allegiance to the LORD of Hosts. One of them will be called the City of the Sun.

הַה֡וּא יִהְיוּ֩ בַּיּ֣וֹם חָמֵ֨שׁ עָרִ֜ים בְּאֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרַ֗יִם מְדַבְּרוֹת֙ שְׂפַ֣ת כְּנַ֔עַן וְנִשְׁבָּע֖וֹת לַיהוָ֣ה צְבָא֑וֹת לְאֶחָֽת׃ס יֵאָמֵ֖ר עִ֣יר הַהֶ֔רֶס ha·hū yih·yū bay·yō·wm ḥā·mêš ‘ā·rîm bə·’e·reṣ miṣ·ra·yim mə·ḏab·bə·rō·wṯ śə·p̄aṯ kə·na·‘an wə·niš·bā·‘ō·wṯ Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ lə·’e·ḥāṯ yê·’ā·mêr ‘îr ha·he·res — WLC · 18

In that day there will be an altar to the LORD in the center of the land of Egypt, and a pillar to the LORD near her border.

It will be a sign and a witness to the LORD of Hosts in the land of Egypt. When they cry out to the LORD because of their oppressors, He will send them a savior and defender to rescue them.

וְהָיָ֨ה לְא֥וֹת וּלְעֵ֛ד לַֽיהוָ֥ה צְבָא֖וֹת בְּאֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרָ֑יִם כִּֽי־ יִצְעֲק֤וּ אֶל־ יְהוָה֙ מִפְּנֵ֣י לֹֽחֲצִ֔ים וְיִשְׁלַ֥ח לָהֶ֛ם מוֹשִׁ֥יעַ וָרָ֖ב וְהִצִּילָֽם׃ wə·hā·yāh lə·’ō·wṯ ū·lə·‘êḏ Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ bə·’e·reṣ miṣ·rā·yim kî- yiṣ·‘ă·qū ’el- Yah·weh mip·pə·nê lō·ḥă·ṣîm wə·yiš·laḥ lā·hem mō·wō·šî·a‘ wā·rāḇ wə·hiṣ·ṣî·lām — WLC · 20

The LORD will make Himself known to Egypt, and on that day Egypt will acknowledge the LORD. They will worship with sacrifices and offerings; they will make vows to the LORD and fulfill them.

And the LORD will strike Egypt {with a plague}; He will strike them but heal them. They will turn to the LORD, and He will hear their prayers and heal them.

In that day there will be a highway from Egypt to Assyria. The Assyrians will go to Egypt, and the Egyptians to Assyria. The Egyptians and Assyrians will worship together.

הַה֗וּא בַּיּ֣וֹם תִּהְיֶ֨ה מְסִלָּ֤ה מִמִּצְרַ֙יִם֙ אַשּׁ֔וּרָה אַשּׁ֥וּר וּבָֽא־ בְּמִצְרַ֖יִם וּמִצְרַ֣יִם בְּאַשּׁ֑וּר מִצְרַ֖יִם אֶת־ אַשּֽׁוּר׃ס וְעָבְד֥וּ ha·hū bay·yō·wm tih·yeh mə·sil·lāh mim·miṣ·ra·yim ’aš·šū·rāh ’aš·šūr ū·ḇā- bə·miṣ·ra·yim ū·miṣ·ra·yim bə·’aš·šūr miṣ·ra·yim ’eṯ- ’aš·šūr wə·‘ā·ḇə·ḏū — WLC · 23

In that day Israel will join a three-party alliance with Egypt and Assyria— a blessing upon the earth.

The LORD of Hosts will bless them, saying, “Blessed [be] Egypt My people, Assyria My handiwork…, and Israel My inheritance.”
