Chapter 20
A Sign against Egypt and Cush
1
Before the year that the chief commander, sent by Sargon king of Assyria, came to Ashdod and attacked and captured [it],
𐤁𐤔𐤍𐤕 𐤕𐤓𐤕𐤍 𐤁𐤔𐤋𐤇 𐤀𐤕𐤅 𐤎𐤓𐤂𐤅𐤍 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤀𐤔𐤅𐤓 𐤁𐤀 𐤀𐤔𐤃𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤋𐤇𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤋𐤊𐤃𐤄 𐤁𐤀𐤔𐤃𐤅𐤃
בִּשְׁנַ֨ת תַרְתָּן֙ בִּשְׁלֹ֣ח אֹת֔וֹ סַֽרְג֖וֹן מֶ֣לֶךְ אַשּׁ֑וּר בֹּ֤א אַשְׁדּ֔וֹדָה וַיִּלָּ֥חֶם וַֽיִּלְכְּדָֽהּ׃ בְּאַשְׁדּ֖וֹד biš·naṯ ṯar·tān biš·lōḥ ’ō·ṯōw sar·ḡō·wn me·leḵ ’aš·šūr bō ’aš·dō·w·ḏāh way·yil·lā·ḥem way·yil·kə·ḏāh bə·’aš·dō·wḏ — WLC · 1

- the LORD had already spoken through Isaiah son of Amoz, saying, “Go, remove the sackcloth from your waist [and]… the sandals from your feet.” And [Isaiah] did so, walking around naked and barefoot.

הַהִ֗יא בָּעֵ֣ת יְהוָה֮ דִּבֶּ֣ר בְּיַ֣ד יְשַׁעְיָ֣הוּ בֶן־ אָמוֹץ֮ לֵאמֹר֒ לֵ֗ךְ וּפִתַּחְתָּ֤ הַשַּׂק֙ מֵעַ֣ל מָתְנֶ֔יךָ תַחֲלֹ֖ץ מֵעַ֣ל וְנַעַלְךָ֥ רַגְלֶ֑יךָ וַיַּ֣עַשׂ כֵּ֔ן הָלֹ֖ךְ עָר֥וֹם וְיָחֵֽף׃ס ha·hî bā·‘êṯ Yah·weh dib·ber bə·yaḏ yə·ša‘·yā·hū ḇen- ’ā·mō·wṣ lê·mōr lêḵ ū·p̄it·taḥ·tā haś·śaq mê·‘al mā·ṯə·ne·ḵā ṯa·ḥă·lōṣ mê·‘al wə·na·‘al·ḵā raḡ·le·ḵā way·ya·‘aś kên hā·lōḵ ‘ā·rō·wm wə·yā·ḥêp̄ — WLC · 2

Then the LORD said, “Just as My servant Isaiah has gone naked and barefoot for three years as a sign and omen against Egypt… and Cush,
𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤊𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤏𐤁𐤃𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤏𐤉𐤄𐤅 𐤄𐤋𐤊 𐤏𐤓𐤅𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤇𐤐 𐤔𐤋𐤔 𐤔𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤌𐤅𐤐𐤕 𐤏𐤋 𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤏𐤋 𐤊𐤅𐤔
יְהוָ֔ה וַיֹּ֣אמֶר כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר עַבְדִּ֥י יְשַׁעְיָ֖הוּ הָלַ֛ךְ עָר֣וֹם וְיָחֵ֑ף שָׁלֹ֤שׁ שָׁנִים֙ א֣וֹת וּמוֹפֵ֔ת עַל־ מִצְרַ֖יִם וְעַל־ כּֽוּשׁ׃ Yah·weh way·yō·mer ka·’ă·šer ‘aḇ·dî yə·ša‘·yā·hū hā·laḵ ‘ā·rō·wm wə·yā·ḥêp̄ šā·lōš šā·nîm ’ō·wṯ ū·mō·w·p̄êṯ ‘al- miṣ·ra·yim wə·‘al- kūš — WLC · 3

so the king of Assyria will lead away the captives of Egypt and the exiles of Cush, young and old alike, naked and barefoot, with bared buttocks— to Egypt’s shame.
𐤊𐤍 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤀𐤔𐤅𐤓 𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤍𐤄𐤂 𐤔𐤁𐤉 𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤂𐤋𐤅𐤕 𐤊𐤅𐤔 𐤍𐤏𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤆𐤒𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤓𐤅𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤇𐤐 𐤅𐤇𐤔𐤅𐤐𐤉 𐤔𐤕 𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤓𐤅𐤕
כֵּ֣ן מֶֽלֶךְ־ אַ֠שּׁוּר אֶת־ יִנְהַ֣ג שְׁבִ֨י מִצְרַ֜יִם וְאֶת־ גָּל֥וּת כּ֛וּשׁ נְעָרִ֥ים וּזְקֵנִ֖ים עָר֣וֹם וְיָחֵ֑ף וַחֲשׂוּפַ֥י שֵׁ֖ת מִצְרָֽיִם׃ עֶרְוַ֥ת kên me·leḵ- ’aš·šūr ’eṯ- yin·haḡ šə·ḇî miṣ·ra·yim wə·’eṯ- gā·lūṯ kūš nə·‘ā·rîm ū·zə·qê·nîm ‘ā·rō·wm wə·yā·ḥêp̄ wa·ḥă·śū·p̄ay šêṯ miṣ·rā·yim ‘er·waṯ — WLC · 4

Those who made Cush their hope… and Egypt their boast will be dismayed and ashamed.
𐤌𐤊𐤅𐤔 𐤌𐤁𐤈𐤌 𐤅𐤌𐤍 𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤕𐤐𐤀𐤓𐤕𐤌 𐤅𐤇𐤕𐤅 𐤅𐤁𐤔𐤅
מִכּוּשׁ֙ מַבָּטָ֔ם וּמִן־ מִצְרַ֖יִם תִּפְאַרְתָּֽם׃ וְחַתּ֖וּ וָבֹ֑שׁוּ mik·kūš mab·bā·ṭām ū·min- miṣ·ra·yim tip̄·’ar·tām wə·ḥat·tū wā·ḇō·šū — WLC · 5

And on that day the dwellers of this coastland will say, ‘See what has happened to our source of hope, those to whom we fled… for help and deliverance from the king of Assyria! How then can we escape?’”

הַהוּא֒ בַּיּ֣וֹם יֹשֵׁ֨ב הַזֶּה֮ הָאִ֣י וְ֠אָמַר הִנֵּה־ כֹ֣ה מַבָּטֵ֗נוּ אֲשֶׁר־ נַ֤סְנוּ שָׁם֙ לְעֶזְרָ֔ה לְהִ֨נָּצֵ֔ל מִפְּנֵ֖י מֶ֣לֶךְ אַשּׁ֑וּר וְאֵ֖יךְ אֲנָֽחְנוּ׃ס נִמָּלֵ֥ט ha·hū bay·yō·wm yō·šêḇ haz·zeh hā·’î wə·’ā·mar hin·nêh- ḵōh mab·bā·ṭê·nū ’ă·šer- nas·nū šām lə·‘ez·rāh lə·hin·nā·ṣêl mip·pə·nê me·leḵ ’aš·šūr wə·’êḵ ’ă·nā·ḥə·nū nim·mā·lêṭ — WLC · 6
