Chapter 24
God’s Judgment on the Earth
1
Behold, the LORD lays waste the earth and leaves it in ruins. He will twist its surface and scatter its inhabitants—
𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤁𐤅𐤒𐤒 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤅𐤁𐤅𐤋𐤒𐤄 𐤅𐤏𐤅𐤄 𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤐𐤉𐤑 𐤉𐤔𐤁𐤉𐤄
הִנֵּ֧ה יְהוָ֛ה בּוֹקֵ֥ק הָאָ֖רֶץ וּבֽוֹלְקָ֑הּ וְעִוָּ֣ה פָנֶ֔יהָ וְהֵפִ֖יץ יֹשְׁבֶֽיהָ׃ hin·nêh Yah·weh bō·w·qêq hā·’ā·reṣ ū·ḇō·wl·qāh wə·‘iw·wāh p̄ā·ne·hā wə·hê·p̄îṣ yō·šə·ḇe·hā — WLC · 1

- people and priest alike, servant and master, maid and mistress, buyer and seller, lender and borrower,… creditor and debtor.

The earth will be utterly laid waste and thoroughly plundered. For the LORD has spoken this word.

The earth mourns and withers; the world languishes and fades; the exalted of the earth waste away.

הָאָ֔רֶץ אָבְלָ֤ה נָֽבְלָה֙ תֵּבֵ֑ל אֻמְלְלָ֥ה נָבְלָ֖ה מְר֥וֹם עַם־ הָאָֽרֶץ׃ אֻמְלָ֖לוּ hā·’ā·reṣ ’ā·ḇə·lāh nā·ḇə·lāh tê·ḇêl ’um·lə·lāh nā·ḇə·lāh mə·rō·wm ‘am- hā·’ā·reṣ ’um·lā·lū — WLC · 4

The earth is defiled by its people; they have transgressed the laws; they have overstepped the decrees and broken the everlasting covenant.

וְהָאָ֥רֶץ חָנְפָ֖ה תַּ֣חַת יֹשְׁבֶ֑יהָ כִּֽי־ עָבְר֤וּ תוֹרֹת֙ חָ֣לְפוּ חֹ֔ק הֵפֵ֖רוּ עוֹלָֽם׃ בְּרִ֥ית wə·hā·’ā·reṣ ḥā·nə·p̄āh ta·ḥaṯ yō·šə·ḇe·hā kî- ‘ā·ḇə·rū ṯō·w·rōṯ ḥā·lə·p̄ū ḥōq hê·p̄ê·rū ‘ō·w·lām bə·rîṯ — WLC · 5

Therefore… a curse has consumed the earth, and its inhabitants must bear the guilt; the earth’s dwellers - have been burned, and only a few… survive.

עַל־ כֵּ֗ן אָלָה֙ אָ֣כְלָה אֶ֔רֶץ יֹ֣שְׁבֵי בָ֑הּ וַֽיֶּאְשְׁמ֖וּ אֶ֔רֶץ יֹ֣שְׁבֵי עַל־ כֵּ֗ן חָרוּ֙ אֱנ֖וֹשׁ מִזְעָֽר׃ וְנִשְׁאַ֥ר ‘al- kên ’ā·lāh ’ā·ḵə·lāh ’e·reṣ yō·šə·ḇê ḇāh way·ye’·šə·mū ’e·reṣ yō·šə·ḇê ‘al- kên ḥā·rū ’ĕ·nō·wōš miz·‘ār wə·niš·’ar — WLC · 6

The new wine dries up, the vine withers. All the merrymakers… now groan.

תִּיר֖וֹשׁ אָבַ֥ל גָ֑פֶן אֻמְלְלָה־ כָּל־ שִׂמְחֵי־ לֵֽב׃ נֶאֶנְח֖וּ tî·rō·wōš ’ā·ḇal ḡā·p̄en ’um·lə·lāh- kāl- śim·ḥê- lêḇ ne·’en·ḥū — WLC · 7

The joyful tambourines have ceased; the noise of revelers has stopped; the joyful harp is silent.

מְשׂ֣וֹשׂ תֻּפִּ֔ים שָׁבַת֙ שְׁא֣וֹן עַלִּיזִ֑ים חָדַ֖ל מְשׂ֥וֹשׂ כִּנּֽוֹר׃ שָׁבַ֖ת mə·śō·wś tup·pîm šā·ḇaṯ šə·’ō·wn ‘al·lî·zîm ḥā·ḏal mə·śō·wś kin·nō·wr šā·ḇaṯ — WLC · 8

They no longer sing and drink wine; strong drink is bitter to those who consume it.

The city of chaos is shattered; every house is closed to entry.

קִרְיַת־ תֹּ֑הוּ נִשְׁבְּרָ֖ה כָּל־ בַּ֖יִת סֻגַּ֥ר מִבּֽוֹא׃ qir·yaṯ- tō·hū niš·bə·rāh kāl- ba·yiṯ sug·gar mib·bō·w — WLC · 10

In the streets they cry out for wine. All joy turns to gloom; rejoicing is exiled from the land.

בַּֽחוּצ֑וֹת צְוָחָ֥ה עַל־ הַיַּ֖יִן כָּל־ שִׂמְחָ֔ה עָֽרְבָה֙ מְשׂ֥וֹשׂ גָּלָ֖ה הָאָֽרֶץ׃ ba·ḥū·ṣō·wṯ ṣə·wā·ḥāh ‘al- hay·ya·yin kāl- śim·ḥāh ‘ā·rə·ḇāh mə·śō·wś gā·lāh hā·’ā·reṣ — WLC · 11

The city is left in ruins; its gate is reduced to rubble.

בָּעִ֖יר נִשְׁאַ֥ר שַׁמָּ֑ה שָֽׁעַר׃ יֻכַּת־ וּשְׁאִיָּ֖ה bā·‘îr niš·’ar šam·māh šā·‘ar yuk·kaṯ- ū·šə·’î·yāh — WLC · 12

So… will it be on the earth [and] among the nations, like a harvested olive tree, like a gleaning after… a grape harvest.

כִּ֣י כֹ֥ה יִהְיֶ֛ה בְּקֶ֥רֶב הָאָ֖רֶץ בְּת֣וֹךְ הָֽעַמִּ֑ים כְּנֹ֣קֶף זַ֔יִת כְּעוֹלֵלֹ֖ת אִם־ כָּלָ֥ה בָצִֽיר׃ kî ḵōh yih·yeh bə·qe·reḇ hā·’ā·reṣ bə·ṯō·wḵ hā·‘am·mîm kə·nō·qep̄ za·yiṯ kə·‘ō·w·lê·lōṯ ’im- kā·lāh ḇā·ṣîr — WLC · 13

They raise their voices, they shout for joy; from the west they proclaim the majesty of the LORD.

הֵ֛מָּה יִשְׂא֥וּ קוֹלָ֖ם יָרֹ֑נּוּ מִיָּֽם׃ צָהֲל֖וּ בִּגְא֣וֹן יְהוָ֔ה hêm·māh yiś·’ū qō·w·lām yā·rōn·nū mî·yām ṣā·hă·lū biḡ·’ō·wn Yah·weh — WLC · 14

Therefore glorify the LORD… in the east. Extol the name of the LORD, the God of Israel in the islands of the sea.

עַל־ כַּבְּד֣וּ יְהוָ֑ה כֵּ֥ן בָּאֻרִ֖ים שֵׁ֥ם יְהוָ֖ה אֱלֹהֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ס בְּאִיֵּ֣י הַיָּ֔ם ‘al- kab·bə·ḏū Yah·weh kên bā·’u·rîm šêm Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê yiś·rā·’êl bə·’î·yê hay·yām — WLC · 15

From the ends of the earth we hear singing: “Glory to the Righteous One.” But I said, “I am wasting away I am wasting away Woe is me.” The treacherous betray; the treacherous deal in treachery.

מִכְּנַ֨ף הָאָ֜רֶץ שָׁמַ֙עְנוּ֙ זְמִרֹ֤ת צְבִ֣י לַצַּדִּ֔יק וָאֹמַ֛ר רָזִי־ לִ֥י רָֽזִי־ לִ֖י א֣וֹי לִ֑י בֹּגְדִ֣ים בָּגָ֔דוּ בּוֹגְדִ֖ים וּבֶ֥גֶד בָּגָֽדוּ׃ mik·kə·nap̄ hā·’ā·reṣ šā·ma‘·nū zə·mi·rōṯ ṣə·ḇî laṣ·ṣad·dîq wā·’ō·mar rā·zî- lî rā·zî- lî ’ō·w lî bō·ḡə·ḏîm bā·ḡā·ḏū bō·wḡ·ḏîm ū·ḇe·ḡeḏ bā·ḡā·ḏū — WLC · 16

Terror and pit and snare await you, O dweller of the earth.

פַּ֥חַד וָפַ֖חַת וָפָ֑ח עָלֶ֖יךָ יוֹשֵׁ֥ב הָאָֽרֶץ׃ pa·ḥaḏ wā·p̄a·ḥaṯ wā·p̄āḥ ‘ā·le·ḵā yō·wō·šêḇ hā·’ā·reṣ — WLC · 17

- Whoever flees the sound of panic will fall into the pit, and whoever climbs from the pit will be caught in the snare. For the windows of heaven are open, and the foundations of the earth are shaken.

וְֽ֠הָיָה הַנָּ֞ס מִקּ֤וֹל הַפַּ֙חַד֙ יִפֹּ֣ל אֶל־ הַפַּ֔חַת וְהָֽעוֹלֶה֙ מִתּ֣וֹךְ הַפַּ֔חַת יִלָּכֵ֖ד בַּפָּ֑ח כִּֽי־ אֲרֻבּ֤וֹת מִמָּרוֹם֙ נִפְתָּ֔חוּ מ֥וֹסְדֵי אָֽרֶץ׃ וַֽיִּרְעֲשׁ֖וּ wə·hā·yāh han·nās miq·qō·wl hap·pa·ḥaḏ yip·pōl ’el- hap·pa·ḥaṯ wə·hā·‘ō·w·leh mit·tō·wḵ hap·pa·ḥaṯ yil·lā·ḵêḏ bap·pāḥ kî- ’ă·rub·bō·wṯ mim·mā·rō·wm nip̄·tā·ḥū mō·ws·ḏê ’ā·reṣ way·yir·‘ă·šū — WLC · 18

The earth is utterly broken apart…, the earth is split open…, the earth is shaken violently…

הָאָ֑רֶץ רֹ֥עָה הִֽתְרֹעֲעָ֖ה אֶ֔רֶץ פּ֤וֹר הִֽתְפּוֹרְרָה֙ אָֽרֶץ׃ מ֥וֹט הִֽתְמוֹטְטָ֖ה hā·’ā·reṣ rō·‘āh hiṯ·rō·‘ă·‘āh ’e·reṣ pō·wr hiṯ·pō·wr·rāh ’ā·reṣ mō·wṭ hiṯ·mō·wṭ·ṭāh — WLC · 19

The earth staggers… like a drunkard and sways like a shack. Earth’s rebellion weighs it down,… and it falls, never to rise again.

אֶ֙רֶץ֙ נ֣וֹעַ תָּנ֤וּעַ כַּשִּׁכּ֔וֹר וְהִֽתְנוֹדְדָ֖ה כַּמְּלוּנָ֑ה פִּשְׁעָ֔הּ וְכָבַ֤ד עָלֶ֙יהָ֙ וְנָפְלָ֖ה וְלֹא־ קֽוּם׃ס תֹסִ֥יף ’e·reṣ nō·w·a‘ tā·nū·a‘ kaš·šik·kō·wr wə·hiṯ·nō·wḏ·ḏāh kam·mə·lū·nāh piš·‘āh wə·ḵā·ḇaḏ ‘ā·le·hā wə·nā·p̄ə·lāh wə·lō- qūm ṯō·sîp̄ — WLC · 20

- In that day the LORD will punish the host of heaven above… and the kings of the earth below…
𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤄𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤁𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤉𐤐𐤒𐤃 𐤏𐤋 𐤑𐤁𐤀 𐤄𐤌𐤓𐤅𐤌 𐤁𐤌𐤓𐤅𐤌 𐤅𐤏𐤋 𐤌𐤋𐤊𐤉 𐤄𐤀𐤃𐤌𐤄 𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤃𐤌𐤄
וְהָיָה֙ הַה֔וּא בַּיּ֣וֹם יְהוָ֛ה יִפְקֹ֧ד עַל־ צְבָ֥א הַמָּר֖וֹם בַּמָּר֑וֹם וְעַל־ מַלְכֵ֥י הָאֲדָמָ֖ה עַל־ הָאֲדָמָֽה׃ wə·hā·yāh ha·hū bay·yō·wm Yah·weh yip̄·qōḏ ‘al- ṣə·ḇā ham·mā·rō·wm bam·mā·rō·wm wə·‘al- mal·ḵê hā·’ă·ḏā·māh ‘al- hā·’ă·ḏā·māh — WLC · 21

They will be gathered together like prisoners in a pit. They will be confined to a dungeon and punished after many days.

וְאֻסְּפ֨וּ אֲסֵפָ֤ה אַסִּיר֙ עַל־ בּ֔וֹר וְסֻגְּר֖וּ עַל־ מַסְגֵּ֑ר יִפָּקֵֽדוּ׃ וּמֵרֹ֥ב יָמִ֖ים wə·’us·sə·p̄ū ’ă·sê·p̄āh ’as·sîr ‘al- bō·wr wə·sug·gə·rū ‘al- mas·gêr yip·pā·qê·ḏū ū·mê·rōḇ yā·mîm — WLC · 22

The moon will be confounded and the sun will be ashamed; for the LORD of Hosts will reign on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem, and before His elders with great glory.
