Chapter 30
The Worthless Treaty with Egypt
1
“Woe to the rebellious children,” declares the LORD, “to those who carry out a plan [that is] not Mine, who form an alliance, but against My will…, heaping up sin upon sin.
𐤄𐤅𐤉 𐤎𐤅𐤓𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤍𐤀𐤌 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤋𐤏𐤔𐤅𐤕 𐤏𐤑𐤄 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤌𐤍𐤉 𐤅𐤋𐤍𐤎𐤊 𐤌𐤎𐤊𐤄 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤓𐤅𐤇𐤉 𐤋𐤌𐤏𐤍 𐤎𐤐𐤅𐤕 𐤇𐤈𐤀𐤕 𐤏𐤋 𐤇𐤈𐤀𐤕

They set out to go down to Egypt without asking My advice, to seek shelter under Pharaoh’s protection and take refuge in Egypt’s shade.

הַהֹלְכִים֙ לָרֶ֣דֶת מִצְרַ֔יִם לֹ֣א שָׁאָ֑לוּ וּפִ֖י לָעוֹז֙ פַּרְעֹ֔ה בְּמָע֣וֹז וְלַחְס֖וֹת מִצְרָֽיִם׃ בְּצֵ֥ל ha·hō·lə·ḵîm lā·re·ḏeṯ miṣ·ra·yim lō šā·’ā·lū ū·p̄î lā·‘ō·wz par·‘ōh bə·mā·‘ō·wz wə·laḥ·sō·wṯ miṣ·rā·yim bə·ṣêl — WLC · 2

But Pharaoh’s protection will become your shame, and the refuge of Egypt’s shade your disgrace.

פַּרְעֹ֖ה מָע֥וֹז וְהָיָ֥ה לָכֶ֛ם לְבֹ֑שֶׁת וְהֶחָס֥וּת מִצְרַ֖יִם בְּצֵל־ לִכְלִמָּֽה׃ par·‘ōh mā·‘ō·wz wə·hā·yāh lā·ḵem lə·ḇō·šeṯ wə·he·ḥā·sūṯ miṣ·ra·yim bə·ṣêl- liḵ·lim·māh — WLC · 3

For though their princes are at Zoan and their envoys have arrived in Hanes,
𐤊𐤉 𐤔𐤓𐤉𐤅 𐤄𐤉𐤅 𐤁𐤑𐤏𐤍 𐤅𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤊𐤉𐤅 𐤉𐤂𐤉𐤏𐤅 𐤇𐤍𐤎
כִּֽי־ שָׂרָ֑יו הָי֥וּ בְצֹ֖עַן וּמַלְאָכָ֖יו יַגִּֽיעוּ׃ חָנֵ֥ס kî- śā·rāw hā·yū ḇə·ṣō·‘an ū·mal·’ā·ḵāw yag·gî·‘ū ḥā·nês — WLC · 4

everyone will be put to shame because of a people vvv useless to them. They bring neither help nor benefit, but only shame and disgrace.”

כֹּ֣ל הִבְאִישׁ עַל־ עַ֖ם לֹא־ יוֹעִ֣ילוּ לָ֑מוֹ לֹ֤א לְעֵ֙זֶר֙ וְלֹ֣א לְהוֹעִ֔יל כִּ֥י לְבֹ֖שֶׁת וְגַם־ לְחֶרְפָּֽה׃ס kōl hiḇ·ʾīš ‘al- ‘am lō- yō·w·‘î·lū lā·mōw lō lə·‘ê·zer wə·lō lə·hō·w·‘îl kî lə·ḇō·šeṯ wə·ḡam- lə·ḥer·pāh — WLC · 5

[This is] the burden against the beasts of the Negev: Through a land of hardship and distress, of lioness and lion,… of viper and flying serpent, they carry their wealth on the backs of donkeys and their treasures on the humps of camels, to a people of no profit to them.

Egypt’s help is futile and empty; therefore I have called her Rahab Who Sits Still.

וּמִצְרַ֕יִם יַעְזֹ֑רוּ הֶ֥בֶל וָרִ֖יק לָכֵן֙ קָרָ֣אתִי לָזֹ֔את רַ֥הַב הֵ֖ם שָֽׁבֶת׃ ū·miṣ·ra·yim ya‘·zō·rū he·ḇel wā·rîq lā·ḵên qā·rā·ṯî lā·zōṯ ra·haḇ hêm šā·ḇeṯ — WLC · 7

Go now, write it on a tablet in their presence and inscribe it on a scroll; it will be for the days to come, a witness forever and ever.

בּ֣וֹא עַתָּ֗ה כָתְבָ֥הּ עַל־ ל֛וּחַ אִתָּ֖ם חֻקָּ֑הּ וְעַל־ סֵ֣פֶר וּתְהִי֙ לְי֣וֹם אַחֲר֔וֹן לָעַ֖ד עַד־ עוֹלָֽם׃ bō·w ‘at·tāh ḵā·ṯə·ḇāh ‘al- lū·aḥ ’it·tām ḥuq·qāh wə·‘al- sê·p̄er ū·ṯə·hî lə·yō·wm ’a·ḥă·rō·wn lā·‘aḏ ‘aḏ- ‘ō·w·lām — WLC · 8

- These are rebellious people, deceitful children, children vvv unwilling to obey the LORD’s instruction.

כִּ֣י ה֔וּא מְרִי֙ עַ֤ם כֶּחָשִׁ֑ים בָּנִ֖ים בָּנִ֕ים לֹֽא־ אָב֥וּ שְׁמ֖וֹעַ יְהוָֽה׃ תּוֹרַ֥ת kî hū mə·rî ‘am ke·ḥā·šîm bā·nîm bā·nîm lō- ’ā·ḇū šə·mō·w·a‘ Yah·weh tō·w·raṯ — WLC · 9

They say to the seers, “Stop seeing visions!” and to the prophets, “Do not prophesy to us the truth! Speak to us pleasant words; prophesy illusions.

אֲשֶׁ֨ר אָמְר֤וּ לָֽרֹאִים֙ לֹ֣א תִרְא֔וּ וְלַ֣חֹזִ֔ים לֹ֥א תֶחֱזוּ־ לָ֖נוּ נְכֹח֑וֹת דַּבְּרוּ־ לָ֣נוּ חֲלָק֔וֹת חֲז֖וּ מַהֲתַלּֽוֹת׃ ’ă·šer ’ā·mə·rū lā·rō·’îm lō ṯir·’ū wə·la·ḥō·zîm lō ṯe·ḥĕ·zū- lā·nū nə·ḵō·ḥō·wṯ dab·bə·rū- lā·nū ḥă·lā·qō·wṯ ḥă·zū ma·hă·ṯal·lō·wṯ — WLC · 10

Get out of the way; turn off… the road. Rid us of the Holy One of Israel!”

ס֚וּרוּ מִנֵּי־ דֶ֔רֶךְ הַטּ֖וּ מִנֵּי־ אֹ֑רַח הַשְׁבִּ֥יתוּ מִפָּנֵ֖ינוּ אֶת־ קְד֥וֹשׁ יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ס sū·rū min·nê- ḏe·reḵ haṭ·ṭū min·nê- ’ō·raḥ haš·bî·ṯū mip·pā·nê·nū ’eṯ- qə·ḏō·wōš yiś·rā·’êl — WLC · 11

Therefore this is what the Holy One of Israel says: “Because you have rejected this message, trusting in oppression and relying on deceit -,

לָכֵ֗ן כֹּ֤ה קְד֣וֹשׁ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל אָמַר֙ יַ֥עַן מָֽאָסְכֶ֖ם הַזֶּ֑ה בַּדָּבָ֣ר וַֽתִּבְטְחוּ֙ בְּעֹ֣שֶׁק וַתִּֽשָּׁעֲנ֖וּ וְנָל֔וֹז עָלָֽיו׃ lā·ḵên kōh qə·ḏō·wōš yiś·rā·’êl ’ā·mar ya·‘an mā·’ā·sə·ḵem haz·zeh bad·dā·ḇār wat·tiḇ·ṭə·ḥū bə·‘ō·šeq wat·tiš·šā·‘ă·nū wə·nā·lō·wz ‘ā·lāw — WLC · 12

- this iniquity of yours is like a breach about to fail, a bulge in a high wall, whose collapse will come suddenly— in an instant!

לָכֵ֗ן הַזֶּ֔ה הֶעָוֺ֣ן יִֽהְיֶ֤ה לָכֶם֙ כְּפֶ֣רֶץ נֹפֵ֔ל נִבְעֶ֖ה נִשְׂגָּבָ֑ה אֲשֶׁר־ בְּחוֹמָ֣ה שִׁבְרָֽהּ׃ יָב֥וֹא פִּתְאֹ֥ם לְפֶ֖תַע lā·ḵên haz·zeh he·‘ā·wōn yih·yeh lā·ḵem kə·p̄e·reṣ nō·p̄êl niḇ·‘eh niś·gā·ḇāh ’ă·šer- bə·ḥō·w·māh šiḇ·rāh yā·ḇō·w piṯ·’ōm lə·p̄e·ṯa‘ — WLC · 13

It will break in pieces like a potter’s jar, shattered so that no fragment… can be found. Not a shard will be found in the dust large enough to scoop the coals from a hearth or to skim the water from a cistern.”

וּ֠שְׁבָרָהּ כְּשֵׁ֨בֶר יוֹצְרִ֛ים נֵ֧בֶל כָּת֖וּת לֹ֣א יַחְמֹ֑ל וְלֹֽא־ חֶ֔רֶשׂ יִמָּצֵ֤א בִמְכִתָּתוֹ֙ לַחְתּ֥וֹת אֵשׁ֙ מִיָּק֔וּד וְלַחְשֹׂ֥ף מַ֖יִם מִגֶּֽבֶא׃פ ū·šə·ḇā·rāh kə·šê·ḇer yō·wṣ·rîm nê·ḇel kā·ṯūṯ lō yaḥ·mōl wə·lō- ḥe·reś yim·mā·ṣê ḇim·ḵit·tā·ṯōw laḥ·tō·wṯ ’êš mî·yā·qūḏ wə·laḥ·śōp̄ ma·yim mig·ge·ḇe — WLC · 14

For… the Lord GOD, the Holy One of Israel, has said: “By repentance and rest you would be saved; your strength would lie in quiet confidence— but you were not willing.”

כִּ֣י כֹֽה־ אֲדֹנָ֨י יְהוִ֜ה קְד֣וֹשׁ יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל אָמַר֩ בְּשׁוּבָ֤ה וָנַ֙חַת֙ תִּוָּ֣שֵׁע֔וּן גְּבֽוּרַתְכֶ֑ם תִּהְיֶ֖ה בְּהַשְׁקֵט֙ וּבְבִטְחָ֔ה וְלֹ֖א אֲבִיתֶֽם׃ kî ḵōh- ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh qə·ḏō·wōš yiś·rā·’êl ’ā·mar bə·šū·ḇāh wā·na·ḥaṯ tiw·wā·šê·‘ūn gə·ḇū·raṯ·ḵem tih·yeh bə·haš·qêṭ ū·ḇə·ḇiṭ·ḥāh wə·lō ’ă·ḇî·ṯem — WLC · 15

“No,” you say, “… we will flee on horses.” Therefore… you will flee! “We will ride… swift horses,” but your pursuers will be faster.

לֹא־ וַתֹּ֨אמְר֥וּ כִ֛י נָנ֖וּס עַל־ ס֥וּס עַל־ כֵּ֣ן תְּנוּס֑וּן נִרְכָּ֔ב עַל־ כֵּ֖ן וְעַל־ קַ֣ל רֹדְפֵיכֶֽם׃ יִקַּ֥לּוּ lō- wat·tō·mə·rū ḵî nā·nūs ‘al- sūs ‘al- kên tə·nū·sūn nir·kāḇ ‘al- kên wə·‘al- qal rō·ḏə·p̄ê·ḵem yiq·qal·lū — WLC · 16

A thousand [will flee] at the threat of one; at the threat of five you will all flee, until… you are left alone like a pole on a mountaintop…, like a banner on a hill.

אֶחָ֗ד אֶ֣לֶף מִפְּנֵי֙ גַּעֲרַ֣ת אֶחָ֔ד מִפְּנֵ֛י גַּעֲרַ֥ת חֲמִשָּׁ֖ה תָּנֻ֑סוּ עַ֣ד אִם־ נוֹתַרְתֶּ֗ם כַּתֹּ֙רֶן֙ עַל־ רֹ֣אשׁ הָהָ֔ר וְכַנֵּ֖ס עַל־ הַגִּבְעָֽה׃ ’e·ḥāḏ ’e·lep̄ mip·pə·nê ga·‘ă·raṯ ’e·ḥāḏ mip·pə·nê ga·‘ă·raṯ ḥă·miš·šāh tā·nu·sū ‘aḏ ’im- nō·w·ṯar·tem kat·tō·ren ‘al- rōš hā·hār wə·ḵan·nês ‘al- hag·giḇ·‘āh — WLC · 17
God Will Be Gracious

Therefore the LORD longs to be gracious to you; therefore He rises to show you compassion, for the LORD is a just God. Blessed are all who wait for Him.

The light of the moon… will be as bright as the sun…, and the light of the sun will be seven times brighter— like the light of seven days— on the day that the LORD binds up the brokenness of His people and heals the wounds He has inflicted.

Behold, the Name of the LORD comes from afar, with burning anger and dense smoke. His lips are full of fury, and His tongue is like a consuming fire.

His breath is like a rushing torrent that rises to the neck. He comes to sift the nations in a sieve of destruction; He bridles the jaws of the peoples to lead them astray.

For Topheth has long been prepared; it has been made ready for the king. Its funeral pyre is deep and wide, with plenty of fire and wood. The breath of the LORD, like a torrent of burning sulfur, sets it ablaze
