Chapter 31
Woe to Those Who Rely on Egypt
1
Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help, who rely on horses, who trust in their abundance of chariots… and in their multitude… of horsemen… They do not look to the Holy One of Israel; they do not seek the LORD.
𐤄𐤅𐤉 𐤄𐤉𐤓𐤃𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤏𐤆𐤓𐤄 𐤉𐤔𐤏𐤍𐤅 𐤏𐤋 𐤎𐤅𐤎𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤈𐤇𐤅 𐤏𐤋 𐤓𐤁 𐤓𐤊𐤁 𐤊𐤉 𐤅𐤏𐤋 𐤌𐤀𐤃 𐤏𐤑𐤌𐤅 𐤐𐤓𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤊𐤉 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤔𐤏𐤅 𐤏𐤋 𐤒𐤃𐤅𐤔 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤋𐤀 𐤃𐤓𐤔𐤅 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄
ה֣וֹי הַיֹּרְדִ֤ים מִצְרַ֙יִם֙ לְעֶזְרָ֔ה יִשָּׁעֵ֑נוּ עַל־ סוּסִ֖ים וַיִּבְטְח֨וּ עַל־ רָ֗ב רֶ֜כֶב כִּ֣י וְעַ֤ל מְאֹ֔ד עָצְמ֣וּ פָּֽרָשִׁים֙ כִּֽי־ וְלֹ֤א שָׁעוּ֙ עַל־ קְד֣וֹשׁ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וְאֶת־ לֹ֥א דָרָֽשׁוּ׃ יְהוָ֖ה hō·w hay·yō·rə·ḏîm miṣ·ra·yim lə·‘ez·rāh yiš·šā·‘ê·nū ‘al- sū·sîm way·yiḇ·ṭə·ḥū ‘al- rāḇ re·ḵeḇ kî wə·‘al mə·’ōḏ ‘ā·ṣə·mū pā·rā·šîm kî- wə·lō šā·‘ū ‘al- qə·ḏō·wōš yiś·rā·’êl wə·’eṯ- lō ḏā·rā·šū Yah·weh — WLC · 1

Yet He too [is] wise and brings disaster; He does not call back His words. He will rise up against the house of the wicked and against the allies of evildoers…
𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤅𐤂𐤌 𐤇𐤊𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤀 𐤓𐤏 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤋𐤀 𐤄𐤎𐤉𐤓 𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤒𐤌 𐤏𐤋 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤌𐤓𐤏𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤏𐤋 𐤏𐤆𐤓𐤕 𐤐𐤏𐤋𐤉 𐤀𐤅𐤍
ה֤וּא וְגַם־ חָכָם֙ וַיָּ֣בֵא רָ֔ע וְאֶת־ לֹ֣א הֵסִ֑יר דְּבָרָ֖יו וְקָם֙ עַל־ בֵּ֣ית מְרֵעִ֔ים וְעַל־ עֶזְרַ֖ת פֹּ֥עֲלֵי אָֽוֶן׃ hū wə·ḡam- ḥā·ḵām way·yā·ḇê rā‘ wə·’eṯ- lō hê·sîr də·ḇā·rāw wə·qām ‘al- bêṯ mə·rê·‘îm wə·‘al- ‘ez·raṯ pō·‘ă·lê ’ā·wen — WLC · 2

But the Egyptians are men, not God; their horses are flesh, not spirit. When the LORD stretches out His hand, the helper will stumble, and the one he helps will fall; both will perish together.
𐤅𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤎𐤅𐤎𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤁𐤔𐤓 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤓𐤅𐤇 𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤉𐤈𐤄 𐤉𐤃𐤅 𐤏𐤅𐤆𐤓 𐤅𐤊𐤔𐤋 𐤏𐤆𐤓 𐤅𐤍𐤐𐤋 𐤊𐤋𐤌 𐤉𐤊𐤋𐤉𐤅𐤍𐤎 𐤅𐤉𐤇𐤃𐤅
וּמִצְרַ֤יִם אָדָם֙ וְֽלֹא־ אֵ֔ל וְסוּסֵיהֶ֥ם בָּשָׂ֖ר וְלֹא־ ר֑וּחַ וַֽיהוָ֞ה יַטֶּ֣ה יָד֗וֹ עוֹזֵר֙ וְכָשַׁ֤ל עָזֻ֔ר וְנָפַ֣ל כֻּלָּ֥ם יִכְלָיֽוּן׃ס וְיַחְדָּ֖ו ū·miṣ·ra·yim ’ā·ḏām wə·lō- ’êl wə·sū·sê·hem bā·śār wə·lō- rū·aḥ Yah·weh yaṭ·ṭeh yā·ḏōw ‘ō·w·zêr wə·ḵā·šal ‘ā·zur wə·nā·p̄al kul·lām yiḵ·lā·yūn wə·yaḥ·dāw — WLC · 3

For this is what the LORD has said to me: “Like a lion roaring or a young lion over its prey— and though a band of shepherds is called out against it, it is not terrified by their shouting or subdued by their clamor…— so the LORD of Hosts will come down to do battle on Mount Zion [and] its heights.

כִּ֣י כֹ֣ה יְהוָ֣ה׀ אָֽמַר־ אֵלַ֡י כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר הָאַרְיֵ֨ה יֶהְגֶּה֩ וְהַכְּפִ֜יר עַל־ טַרְפּ֗וֹ אֲשֶׁ֨ר מְלֹ֣א רֹעִ֔ים יִקָּרֵ֤א עָלָיו֙ לֹ֣א יֵחָ֔ת מִקּוֹלָם֙ יַֽעֲנֶ֑ה וּמֵֽהֲמוֹנָ֖ם לֹ֣א כֵּ֗ן יְהוָ֣ה צְבָא֔וֹת יֵרֵד֙ לִצְבֹּ֥א עַל־ הַר־ צִיּ֖וֹן וְעַל־ גִּבְעָתָֽהּ׃ kî ḵōh Yah·weh ’ā·mar- ’ê·lay ka·’ă·šer hā·’ar·yêh yeh·geh wə·hak·kə·p̄îr ‘al- ṭar·pōw ’ă·šer mə·lō rō·‘îm yiq·qā·rê ‘ā·lāw lō yê·ḥāṯ miq·qō·w·lām ya·‘ă·neh ū·mê·hă·mō·w·nām lō kên Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ yê·rêḏ liṣ·bō ‘al- har- ṣî·yō·wn wə·‘al- giḇ·‘ā·ṯāh — WLC · 4

Like birds hovering overhead, so the LORD of Hosts… will protect Jerusalem. He will shield it and deliver it; He will pass over it and preserve it.”

כְּצִפֳּרִ֣ים עָפ֔וֹת כֵּ֗ן יְהוָ֥ה צְבָא֖וֹת עַל־ יָגֵ֛ן יְרֽוּשָׁלִָ֑ם גָּנ֥וֹן וְהִצִּ֖יל פָּסֹ֥חַ וְהִמְלִֽיט׃ kə·ṣip·po·rîm ‘ā·p̄ō·wṯ kên Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ ‘al- yā·ḡên yə·rū·šā·lim gā·nō·wn wə·hiṣ·ṣîl pā·sō·aḥ wə·him·lîṭ — WLC · 5

Return to the One against whom you have so blatantly rebelled, O children of Israel.
𐤔𐤅𐤁𐤅 𐤋𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤄𐤏𐤌𐤉𐤒𐤅 𐤎𐤓𐤄 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋
שׁ֗וּבוּ לַאֲשֶׁ֛ר הֶעְמִ֥יקוּ סָרָ֖ה בְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ šū·ḇū la·’ă·šer he‘·mî·qū sā·rāh bə·nê yiś·rā·’êl — WLC · 6

For on that day, every one of you will reject the idols of silver… and gold that your own hands have sinfully made.
𐤊𐤉 𐤄𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤁𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤉𐤌𐤀𐤎𐤅𐤍 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤋𐤉 𐤊𐤎𐤐𐤅 𐤅𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤋𐤉 𐤆𐤄𐤁𐤅 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤋𐤊𐤌 𐤉𐤃𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤇𐤈𐤀 𐤏𐤔𐤅
כִּ֚י הַה֔וּא בַּיּ֣וֹם אִ֚ישׁ יִמְאָס֗וּן אֱלִילֵ֣י כַסְפּ֔וֹ וֶאֱלִילֵ֖י זְהָב֑וֹ אֲשֶׁ֨ר לָכֶ֛ם יְדֵיכֶ֖ם חֵֽטְא׃ עָשׂ֥וּ kî ha·hū bay·yō·wm ’îš yim·’ā·sūn ’ĕ·lî·lê ḵas·pōw we·’ĕ·lî·lê zə·hā·ḇōw ’ă·šer lā·ḵem yə·ḏê·ḵem ḥêṭ ‘ā·śū — WLC · 7

“Then Assyria will fall, but not by the sword of man; a sword will devour them, but not one made by mortals. They will flee before the sword, and their young men will be put to forced labor.

אַשּׁוּר֙ וְנָפַ֤ל לֹא־ בְּחֶ֣רֶב אִ֔ישׁ וְחֶ֥רֶב תֹּֽאכֲלֶ֑נּוּ לֹֽא־ אָדָ֖ם וְנָ֥ס לוֹ֙ מִפְּנֵי־ חֶ֔רֶב וּבַחוּרָ֖יו יִהְיֽוּ׃ לָמַ֥ס ’aš·šūr wə·nā·p̄al lō- bə·ḥe·reḇ ’îš wə·ḥe·reḇ tō·ḵă·len·nū lō- ’ā·ḏām wə·nās lōw mip·pə·nê- ḥe·reḇ ū·ḇa·ḥū·rāw yih·yū lā·mas — WLC · 8

Their rock will pass away for fear, and their princes will panic at [the sight of] the battle standard,” declares the LORD, whose fire is in Zion, whose furnace is in Jerusalem.

וְסַלְעוֹ֙ יַֽעֲב֔וֹר מִמָּג֣וֹר שָׂרָ֑יו וְחַתּ֥וּ מִנֵּ֖ס נְאֻם־ יְהוָ֗ה אֲשֶׁר־ א֥וּר לוֹ֙ בְּצִיּ֔וֹן וְתַנּ֥וּר ל֖וֹ בִּירוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ס wə·sal·‘ōw ya·‘ă·ḇō·wr mim·mā·ḡō·wr śā·rāw wə·ḥat·tū min·nês nə·’um- Yah·weh ’ă·šer- ’ūr lōw bə·ṣî·yō·wn wə·ṯan·nūr lōw bî·rū·šā·lim — WLC · 9
