Chapter 33

The LORD Is Exalted

1

Woe to you, O destroyer never destroyed, O traitor never betrayed When you have finished destroying, you will be destroyed. When you have finished betraying, you will be betrayed

ה֣וֹי וְאַתָּה֙ שׁוֹדֵ֗ד לֹ֣א שָׁד֔וּד וּבוֹגֵ֖ד וְלֹא־ בָ֣גְדוּ ב֑וֹ כַּהֲתִֽמְךָ֤ שׁוֹדֵד֙ תּוּשַּׁ֔ד כַּנְּלֹתְךָ֥ לִבְגֹּ֖ד יִבְגְּדוּ־ בָֽךְ׃ס hō·w wə·’at·tāh šō·w·ḏêḏ lō šā·ḏūḏ ū·ḇō·w·ḡêḏ wə·lō- ḇā·ḡə·ḏū ḇōw ka·hă·ṯim·ḵā šō·w·ḏêḏ tūš·šaḏ kan·nə·lō·ṯə·ḵā liḇ·gōḏ yiḇ·gə·ḏū- ḇāḵWLC · 1

O LORD, be gracious to us! We wait for You. Be our strength every morning and our salvation in time of trouble.

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤇𐤍𐤍𐤅 𐤒𐤅𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤋𐤊 𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤆𐤓𐤏𐤌 𐤋𐤁𐤒𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤐 𐤉𐤔𐤅𐤏𐤕𐤍𐤅 𐤁𐤏𐤕 𐤑𐤓𐤄

יְהוָ֥ה חָנֵּ֖נוּ קִוִּ֑ינוּ לְךָ֣ הֱיֵ֤ה זְרֹעָם֙ לַבְּקָרִ֔ים אַף־ יְשׁוּעָתֵ֖נוּ בְּעֵ֥ת צָרָֽה׃ Yah·weh ḥān·nê·nū qiw·wî·nū lə·ḵā hĕ·yêh zə·rō·‘ām lab·bə·qā·rîm ’ap̄- yə·šū·‘ā·ṯê·nū bə·‘êṯ ṣā·rāhWLC · 2

The peoples flee the thunder of Your voice; the nations scatter when You rise.

𐤏𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤍𐤃𐤃𐤅 𐤄𐤌𐤅𐤍 𐤌𐤒𐤅𐤋 𐤂𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤍𐤐𐤑𐤅 𐤌𐤓𐤅𐤌𐤌𐤕𐤊

עַמִּ֑ים נָדְד֖וּ הָמ֔וֹן מִקּ֣וֹל גּוֹיִֽם׃ נָפְצ֖וּ מֵר֣וֹמְמֻתֶ֔ךָ ‘am·mîm nā·ḏə·ḏū hā·mō·wn miq·qō·wl gō·w·yim nā·p̄ə·ṣū mê·rō·wm·mu·ṯe·ḵāWLC · 3

Your spoil, [O nations,] is gathered as by locusts…; like a swarm of locusts men sweep over it.

𐤔𐤋𐤋𐤊𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤎𐤐 𐤄𐤇𐤎𐤉𐤋 𐤀𐤎𐤐 𐤊𐤌𐤔𐤒 𐤂𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤔𐤅𐤒𐤒 𐤁𐤅

שְׁלַלְכֶ֔ם וְאֻסַּ֣ף הֶֽחָסִ֑יל אֹ֖סֶף כְּמַשַּׁ֥ק גֵּבִ֖ים שׁוֹקֵ֥ק בּֽוֹ׃ šə·lal·ḵem wə·’us·sap̄ he·ḥā·sîl ’ō·sep̄ kə·maš·šaq gê·ḇîm šō·w·qêq bōwWLC · 4

The LORD is exalted, for He dwells on high; He has filled Zion with justice and righteousness.

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤍𐤔𐤂𐤁 𐤊𐤉 𐤔𐤊𐤍 𐤌𐤓𐤅𐤌 𐤌𐤋𐤀 𐤑𐤉𐤅𐤍 𐤌𐤔𐤐𐤈 𐤅𐤑𐤃𐤒𐤄

יְהוָ֔ה נִשְׂגָּ֣ב כִּ֥י שֹׁכֵ֖ן מָר֑וֹם מִלֵּ֣א צִיּ֔וֹן מִשְׁפָּ֖ט וּצְדָקָֽה׃ Yah·weh niś·gāḇ kî šō·ḵên mā·rō·wm mil·lê ṣî·yō·wn miš·pāṭ ū·ṣə·ḏā·qāhWLC · 5

He will be the sure foundation for your times, a storehouse of salvation, wisdom, and knowledge. The fear of the LORD… is [Zion’s] treasure.

וְהָיָה֙ אֱמוּנַ֣ת עִתֶּ֔יךָ חֹ֥סֶן יְשׁוּעֹ֖ת חָכְמַ֣ת וָדָ֑עַת יִרְאַ֥ת יְהוָ֖ה הִ֥יא אוֹצָרֽוֹ׃ס wə·hā·yāh ’ĕ·mū·naṯ ‘it·te·ḵā ḥō·sen yə·šū·‘ōṯ ḥā·ḵə·maṯ wā·ḏā·‘aṯ yir·’aṯ Yah·weh hî ’ō·w·ṣā·rōwWLC · 6

Behold, their valiant ones cry aloud in the streets; the envoys of peace weep bitterly.

הֵ֚ן אֶרְאֶלָּ֔ם צָעֲק֖וּ חֻ֑צָה מַלְאֲכֵ֣י שָׁל֔וֹם יִבְכָּיֽוּן׃ מַ֖ר hên ’er·’el·lām ṣā·‘ă·qū ḥu·ṣāh mal·’ă·ḵê šā·lō·wm yiḇ·kā·yūn marWLC · 7

The highways are deserted; travel… has ceased. The treaty has been broken, the witnesses are despised, and human life is disregarded…

𐤌𐤎𐤋𐤅𐤕 𐤍𐤔𐤌𐤅 𐤏𐤁𐤓 𐤀𐤓𐤇 𐤔𐤁𐤕 𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤕 𐤄𐤐𐤓 𐤏𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤀𐤎 𐤋𐤀 𐤇𐤔𐤁 𐤀𐤍𐤅𐤔

מְסִלּ֔וֹת נָשַׁ֣מּוּ עֹבֵ֣ר אֹ֑רַח שָׁבַ֖ת בְּרִית֙ הֵפֵ֤ר עָרִ֔ים מָאַ֣ס לֹ֥א חָשַׁ֖ב אֱנֽוֹשׁ׃ mə·sil·lō·wṯ nā·šam·mū ‘ō·ḇêr ’ō·raḥ šā·ḇaṯ bə·rîṯ hê·p̄êr ‘ā·rîm mā·’as lō ḥā·šaḇ ’ĕ·nō·wōšWLC · 8

The land mourns [and] languishes; Lebanon is ashamed and decayed. Sharon is like a desert; Bashan and Carmel shake off their leaves.

אָ֔רֶץ אָבַ֤ל אֻמְלְלָה֙ לְבָנ֖וֹן הֶחְפִּ֥יר קָמַ֑ל הַשָּׁרוֹן֙ הָיָ֤ה כָּֽעֲרָבָ֔ה בָּשָׁ֖ן וְכַרְמֶֽל׃ וְנֹעֵ֥ר ’ā·reṣ ’ā·ḇal ’um·lə·lāh lə·ḇā·nō·wn heḥ·pîr qā·mal haš·šā·rō·wn hā·yāh kā·‘ă·rā·ḇāh bā·šān wə·ḵar·mel wə·nō·‘êrWLC · 9

“Now I will arise,” says the LORD. “Now I will lift Myself up. Now I will be exalted.

𐤏𐤕𐤄 𐤀𐤒𐤅𐤌 𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤏𐤕𐤄 𐤀𐤓𐤅𐤌𐤌 𐤏𐤕𐤄 𐤀𐤍𐤔𐤀

עַתָּ֥ה אָק֖וּם יֹאמַ֣ר יְהוָ֑ה עַתָּה֙ אֵֽרוֹמָ֔ם עַתָּ֖ה אֶנָּשֵֽׂא׃ ‘at·tāh ’ā·qūm yō·mar Yah·weh ‘at·tāh ’ê·rō·w·mām ‘at·tāh ’en·nā·śêWLC · 10

You conceive chaff; you give birth to stubble. Your breath is a fire that will consume you.

𐤕𐤄𐤓𐤅 𐤇𐤔𐤔 𐤕𐤋𐤃𐤅 𐤒𐤔 𐤓𐤅𐤇𐤊𐤌 𐤀𐤔 𐤕𐤀𐤊𐤋𐤊𐤌

תַּהֲר֥וּ חֲשַׁ֖שׁ תֵּ֣לְדוּ קַ֑שׁ רוּחֲכֶ֕ם אֵ֖שׁ תֹּאכַלְכֶֽם׃ ta·hă·rū ḥă·šaš tê·lə·ḏū qaš rū·ḥă·ḵem ’êš tō·ḵal·ḵemWLC · 11

The peoples will be burned to ashes, like thorns cut down and set ablaze.

𐤏𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤅 𐤌𐤔𐤓𐤐𐤅𐤕 𐤔𐤉𐤃 𐤒𐤅𐤑𐤉𐤌 𐤊𐤎𐤅𐤇𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤑𐤕𐤅𐤎 𐤁𐤀𐤔

עַמִּ֖ים וְהָי֥וּ מִשְׂרְפ֣וֹת שִׂ֑יד קוֹצִ֥ים כְּסוּחִ֖ים יִצַּֽתּוּ׃ס בָּאֵ֥שׁ ‘am·mîm wə·hā·yū miś·rə·p̄ō·wṯ śîḏ qō·w·ṣîm kə·sū·ḥîm yiṣ·ṣat·tū bā·’êšWLC · 12

You who are far off, hear what I have done; you who are near, acknowledge My might.”

𐤓𐤇𐤅𐤒𐤉𐤌 𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤅 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤏𐤔𐤉𐤕𐤉 𐤒𐤓𐤅𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤃𐤏𐤅 𐤂𐤁𐤓𐤕𐤉

רְחוֹקִ֖ים שִׁמְע֥וּ אֲשֶׁ֣ר עָשִׂ֑יתִי קְרוֹבִ֖ים וּדְע֥וּ גְּבֻרָתִֽי׃ rə·ḥō·w·qîm šim·‘ū ’ă·šer ‘ā·śî·ṯî qə·rō·w·ḇîm ū·ḏə·‘ū gə·ḇu·rā·ṯîWLC · 13

The sinners in Zion are afraid; trembling grips the ungodly: “Who of us can dwell with a consuming fire? Who of us can dwell with everlasting flames?”

𐤇𐤈𐤀𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤑𐤉𐤅𐤍 𐤐𐤇𐤃𐤅 𐤓𐤏𐤃𐤄 𐤀𐤇𐤆𐤄 𐤇𐤍𐤐𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤉 𐤋𐤍𐤅 𐤉𐤂𐤅𐤓 𐤀𐤅𐤊𐤋𐤄 𐤀𐤔 𐤌𐤉 𐤋𐤍𐤅 𐤉𐤂𐤅𐤓 𐤏𐤅𐤋𐤌 𐤌𐤅𐤒𐤃𐤉

חַטָּאִ֔ים בְצִיּוֹן֙ פָּחֲד֤וּ רְעָדָ֖ה אָחֲזָ֥ה חֲנֵפִ֑ים מִ֣י׀ לָ֗נוּ יָג֣וּר אוֹכֵלָ֔ה אֵ֚שׁ מִי־ לָ֖נוּ יָג֥וּר עוֹלָֽם׃ מוֹקְדֵ֥י ḥaṭ·ṭā·’îm ḇə·ṣî·yō·wn pā·ḥă·ḏū rə·‘ā·ḏāh ’ā·ḥă·zāh ḥă·nê·p̄îm mî lā·nū yā·ḡūr ’ō·w·ḵê·lāh ’êš mî- lā·nū yā·ḡūr ‘ō·w·lām mō·wq·ḏêWLC · 14

He who walks righteously and speaks with sincerity, who refuses gain from extortion, whose hand never takes a bribe, who stops his ears against murderous plots and shuts his eyes tightly against evil—

𐤄𐤋𐤊 𐤑𐤃𐤒𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤌𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤀𐤎 𐤁𐤁𐤑𐤏 𐤌𐤏𐤔𐤒𐤅𐤕 𐤊𐤐𐤉𐤅 𐤍𐤏𐤓 𐤌𐤕𐤌𐤊 𐤁𐤔𐤇𐤃 𐤀𐤈𐤌 𐤀𐤆𐤍𐤅 𐤌𐤔𐤌𐤏 𐤃𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤏𐤑𐤌 𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉𐤅 𐤌𐤓𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤁𐤓𐤏

הֹלֵ֣ךְ צְדָק֔וֹת וְדֹבֵ֖ר מֵֽישָׁרִ֑ים מֹאֵ֞ס בְּבֶ֣צַע מַעֲשַׁקּ֗וֹת כַּפָּיו֙ נֹעֵ֤ר מִתְּמֹ֣ךְ בַּשֹּׁ֔חַד אֹטֵ֤ם אָזְנוֹ֙ מִשְּׁמֹ֣עַ דָּמִ֔ים וְעֹצֵ֥ם עֵינָ֖יו מֵרְא֥וֹת בְּרָֽע׃ hō·lêḵ ṣə·ḏā·qō·wṯ wə·ḏō·ḇêr mê·šā·rîm mō·’ês bə·ḇe·ṣa‘ ma·‘ă·šaq·qō·wṯ kap·pāw nō·‘êr mit·tə·mōḵ baš·šō·ḥaḏ ’ō·ṭêm ’ā·zə·nōw miš·šə·mō·a‘ dā·mîm wə·‘ō·ṣêm ‘ê·nāw mê·rə·’ō·wṯ bə·rā‘WLC · 15

he will dwell on the heights; the mountain fortress [will be] his refuge; his food will be provided [and] his water assured.

ה֚וּא יִשְׁכֹּ֔ן מְרוֹמִ֣ים סְלָעִ֖ים מְצָד֥וֹת מִשְׂגַּבּ֑וֹ לַחְמ֣וֹ נִתָּ֔ן מֵימָ֖יו נֶאֱמָנִֽים׃ hū yiš·kōn mə·rō·w·mîm sə·lā·‘îm mə·ṣā·ḏō·wṯ miś·gab·bōw laḥ·mōw nit·tān mê·māw ne·’ĕ·mā·nîmWLC · 16

17

Your eyes will see the King in His beauty and behold a land that stretches afar.

𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉𐤊 𐤕𐤇𐤆𐤉𐤍𐤄 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤁𐤉𐤐𐤉𐤅 𐤕𐤓𐤀𐤉𐤍𐤄 𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤌𐤓𐤇𐤒𐤉𐤌

עֵינֶ֑יךָ תֶּחֱזֶ֣ינָה מֶ֥לֶךְ בְּיָפְי֖וֹ תִּרְאֶ֖ינָה אֶ֥רֶץ מַרְחַקִּֽים׃ ‘ê·ne·ḵā te·ḥĕ·ze·nāh me·leḵ bə·yā·p̄ə·yōw tir·’e·nāh ’e·reṣ mar·ḥaq·qîmWLC · 17

18

Your mind will ponder the former terror: “Where is he who tallies? Where is he who weighs? Where is he who counts the towers?”

𐤋𐤁𐤊 𐤉𐤄𐤂𐤄 𐤀𐤉𐤌𐤄 𐤀𐤉𐤄 𐤎𐤐𐤓 𐤀𐤉𐤄 𐤔𐤒𐤋 𐤀𐤉𐤄 𐤎𐤐𐤓 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤌𐤂𐤃𐤋𐤉𐤌

לִבְּךָ֖ יֶהְגֶּ֣ה אֵימָ֑ה אַיֵּ֤ה סֹפֵר֙ אַיֵּ֣ה שֹׁקֵ֔ל אַיֵּ֖ה סֹפֵ֥ר אֶת־ הַמִּגְדָּלִֽים׃ lib·bə·ḵā yeh·geh ’ê·māh ’ay·yêh sō·p̄êr ’ay·yêh šō·qêl ’ay·yêh sō·p̄êr ’eṯ- ham·miḡ·dā·lîmWLC · 18

  • You will no longer see the insolent…, a people whose speech is unintelligible -, who stammer in a language you cannot understand.

𐤀𐤕 𐤋𐤀 𐤕𐤓𐤀𐤄 𐤍𐤅𐤏𐤆 𐤏𐤌 𐤏𐤌 𐤔𐤐𐤄 𐤏𐤌𐤒𐤉 𐤌𐤔𐤌𐤅𐤏 𐤍𐤋𐤏𐤂 𐤋𐤔𐤅𐤍 𐤀𐤉𐤍 𐤁𐤉𐤍𐤄

אֶת־ לֹ֣א תִרְאֶ֑ה נוֹעָ֖ז עַ֥ם עַ֣ם שָׂפָה֙ עִמְקֵ֤י מִשְּׁמ֔וֹעַ נִלְעַ֥ג לָשׁ֖וֹן אֵ֥ין בִּינָֽה׃ ’eṯ- lō ṯir·’eh nō·w·‘āz ‘am ‘am śā·p̄āh ‘im·qê miš·šə·mō·w·a‘ nil·‘aḡ lā·šō·wn ’ên bî·nāhWLC · 19

Look upon Zion, the city of our appointed feasts. Your eyes will see Jerusalem, a peaceful pasture, a tent that does not wander; its tent pegs… will not be pulled up, nor will any of its cords be broken.

𐤇𐤆𐤄 𐤑𐤉𐤅𐤍 𐤒𐤓𐤉𐤕 𐤌𐤅𐤏𐤃𐤍𐤅 𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉𐤊 𐤕𐤓𐤀𐤉𐤍𐤄 𐤉𐤓𐤅𐤔𐤋𐤌 𐤔𐤀𐤍𐤍 𐤍𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤄𐤋 𐤁𐤋 𐤉𐤑𐤏𐤍 𐤉𐤕𐤃𐤕𐤉𐤅 𐤋𐤍𐤑𐤇 𐤁𐤋 𐤉𐤎𐤏 𐤁𐤋 𐤅𐤊𐤋 𐤇𐤁𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤉𐤍𐤕𐤒𐤅

חֲזֵ֣ה צִיּ֔וֹן קִרְיַ֖ת מֽוֹעֲדֵ֑נוּ עֵינֶיךָ֩ תִרְאֶ֨ינָה יְרוּשָׁלִַ֜ם שַׁאֲנָ֗ן נָוֶ֣ה אֹ֤הֶל בַּל־ יִצְעָן֙ יְתֵֽדֹתָיו֙ לָנֶ֔צַח בַּל־ יִסַּ֤ע בַּל־ וְכָל־ חֲבָלָ֖יו יִנָּתֵֽקוּ׃ ḥă·zêh ṣî·yō·wn qir·yaṯ mō·w·‘ă·ḏê·nū ‘ê·ne·ḵā ṯir·’e·nāh yə·rū·šā·lim ša·’ă·nān nā·weh ’ō·hel bal- yiṣ·‘ān yə·ṯê·ḏō·ṯāw lā·ne·ṣaḥ bal- yis·sa‘ bal- wə·ḵāl ḥă·ḇā·lāw yin·nā·ṯê·qūWLC · 20

  • But there the Majestic One, our LORD, [will be] for us a place of rivers and wide… canals, where no galley with oars will row and no majestic vessel will pass.

כִּ֣י אִם־ שָׁ֞ם אַדִּ֤יר יְהוָה֙ לָ֔נוּ מְקוֹם־ נְהָרִ֥ים רַחֲבֵ֣י יָדָ֑יִם יְאֹרִ֖ים בַּל־ אֳנִי־ שַׁ֔יִט תֵּ֤לֶךְ בּוֹ֙ לֹ֥א אַדִּ֖יר וְצִ֥י יַעַבְרֶֽנּוּ׃ kî ’im- šām ’ad·dîr Yah·weh lā·nū mə·qō·wm- nə·hā·rîm ra·ḥă·ḇê yā·ḏā·yim yə·’ō·rîm bal- ’o·nî- ša·yiṭ tê·leḵ bōw lō ’ad·dîr wə·ṣî ya·‘aḇ·ren·nūWLC · 21

For the LORD is our Judge, the LORD is our lawgiver, the LORD is our King. [It is] He who will save us.

Your ropes are slack; they cannot secure the mast… or spread the sail. Then an abundance vvv of spoils will be divided, [and even] the lame will carry off plunder…

חֲבָלָ֑יִךְ נִטְּשׁ֖וּ בַּל־ יְחַזְּק֤וּ כֵן־ תָּרְנָם֙ בַּל־ פָּ֣רְשׂוּ נֵ֔ס אָ֣ז מַרְבֶּ֔ה עַֽד־ שָׁלָל֙ חֻלַּ֤ק פִּסְחִ֖ים בָּ֥זְזוּ בַֽז׃ ḥă·ḇā·lā·yiḵ niṭ·ṭə·šū bal- yə·ḥaz·zə·qū ḵên- tā·rə·nām bal- pā·rə·śū nês ’āz mar·beh ‘aḏ- šā·lāl ḥul·laq pis·ḥîm bā·zə·zū ḇazWLC · 23

And no resident [of Zion] will say, “I am sick.” The people who dwell there will be forgiven of iniquity.
