Chapter 44
The LORD Has Chosen Israel
1
But now listen, O Jacob My servant, Israel, whom I have chosen
𐤅𐤏𐤕𐤄 𐤔𐤌𐤏 𐤉𐤏𐤒𐤁 𐤏𐤁𐤃𐤉 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤁𐤇𐤓𐤕𐤉 𐤁𐤅
וְעַתָּ֥ה שְׁמַ֖ע יַעֲקֹ֣ב עַבְדִּ֑י וְיִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל בָּחַ֥רְתִּי בֽוֹ׃ wə·‘at·tāh šə·ma‘ ya·‘ă·qōḇ ‘aḇ·dî wə·yiś·rā·’êl bā·ḥar·tî ḇōw — WLC · 1

This is the word of the LORD, your Maker, who formed you from the womb [and] who will help you: “Do not be afraid, O Jacob My servant, Jeshurun, whom I have chosen

כֹּה־ אָמַ֨ר יְהוָ֥ה עֹשֶׂ֛ךָ וְיֹצֶרְךָ֥ מִבֶּ֖טֶן יַעְזְרֶ֑ךָּ אַל־ תִּירָא֙ יַֽעֲקֹ֔ב עַבְדִּ֣י וִישֻׁר֖וּן בָּחַ֥רְתִּי בֽוֹ׃ kōh- ’ā·mar Yah·weh ‘ō·śe·ḵā wə·yō·ṣer·ḵā mib·be·ṭen ya‘·zə·re·kā ’al- tî·rā ya·‘ă·qōḇ ‘aḇ·dî wî·šu·rūn bā·ḥar·tî ḇōw — WLC · 2

For I will pour water on the thirsty land, and currents on the dry ground. I will pour out My Spirit on your descendants, and My blessing on your offspring.

כִּ֤י אֶצָּק־ מַ֙יִם֙ עַל־ צָמֵ֔א וְנֹזְלִ֖ים עַל־ יַבָּשָׁ֑ה אֶצֹּ֤ק רוּחִי֙ עַל־ זַרְעֶ֔ךָ וּבִרְכָתִ֖י עַל־ צֶאֱצָאֶֽיךָ׃ kî ’eṣ·ṣāq- ma·yim ‘al- ṣā·mê wə·nō·zə·lîm ‘al- yab·bā·šāh ’eṣ·ṣōq rū·ḥî ‘al- zar·‘e·ḵā ū·ḇir·ḵā·ṯî ‘al- ṣe·’ĕ·ṣā·’e·ḵā — WLC · 3

They will sprout among the grass like willows by flowing streams.

וְצָמְח֖וּ בְּבֵ֣ין חָצִ֑יר כַּעֲרָבִ֖ים עַל־ יִבְלֵי־ מָֽיִם׃ wə·ṣā·mə·ḥū bə·ḇên ḥā·ṣîr ka·‘ă·rā·ḇîm ‘al- yiḇ·lê- mā·yim — WLC · 4

One will say, ‘I [belong] to the LORD,’ another will call himself by the name of Jacob, and still another will write on his hand, ‘The LORD’s,’ and will take the name of Israel.”

זֶ֤ה יֹאמַר֙ אָ֔נִי לַֽיהוָ֣ה וְזֶ֖ה יִקְרָ֣א בְשֵֽׁם־ יַעֲקֹ֑ב וְזֶ֗ה יִכְתֹּ֤ב יָדוֹ֙ לַֽיהוָ֔ה יְכַנֶּֽה׃פ וּבְשֵׁ֥ם יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל zeh yō·mar ’ā·nî Yah·weh wə·zeh yiq·rā ḇə·šêm- ya·‘ă·qōḇ wə·zeh yiḵ·tōḇ yā·ḏōw Yah·weh yə·ḵan·neh ū·ḇə·šêm yiś·rā·’êl — WLC · 5

Thus says the LORD, the King and Redeemer of Israel, the LORD of Hosts: “I am the first and I am the last, and there is no God but Me.

כֹּֽה־ אָמַ֨ר יְהוָ֧ה מֶֽלֶךְ־ וְגֹאֲל֖וֹ יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל יְהוָ֣ה צְבָא֑וֹת אֲנִ֤י רִאשׁוֹן֙ וַאֲנִ֣י אַחֲר֔וֹן אֵ֥ין אֱלֹהִֽים׃ וּמִבַּלְעָדַ֖י kōh- ’ā·mar Yah·weh me·leḵ- wə·ḡō·’ă·lōw yiś·rā·’êl Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ ’ă·nî ri·šō·wn wa·’ă·nî ’a·ḥă·rō·wn ’ên ’ĕ·lō·hîm ū·mib·bal·‘ā·ḏay — WLC · 6

Who then [is] like Me? Let him say so! Let him declare [his] case before Me, since I established an ancient people. Let him foretell the things to come, and what is to take place.

וּמִֽי־ כָמ֣וֹנִי יִקְרָ֗א וְיַגִּידֶ֤הָ וְיַעְרְכֶ֙הָ֙ לִ֔י מִשּׂוּמִ֖י עוֹלָ֑ם עַם־ יַגִּ֥ידוּ לָֽמוֹ׃ וְאֹתִיּ֛וֹת וַאֲשֶׁ֥ר תָּבֹ֖אנָה ū·mî- ḵā·mō·w·nî yiq·rā wə·yag·gî·ḏe·hā wə·ya‘·rə·ḵe·hā lî miś·śū·mî ‘ō·w·lām ‘am- yag·gî·ḏū lā·mōw wə·’ō·ṯî·yō·wṯ wa·’ă·šer tā·ḇō·nāh — WLC · 7

Do not tremble [or] fear. Have I not told you and declared it long ago? You are My witnesses! Is there any God but Me? There is no other Rock; I know not one.”

אַֽל־ תִּפְחֲדוּ֙ וְאַל־ תִּרְה֔וּ הֲלֹ֥א הִשְׁמַעְתִּ֥יךָ וְהִגַּ֖דְתִּי מֵאָ֛ז וְאַתֶּ֣ם עֵדָ֑י הֲיֵ֤שׁ אֱל֙וֹהַּ֙ מִבַּלְעָדַ֔י וְאֵ֥ין צ֖וּר יָדָֽעְתִּי׃ בַּל־ ’al- tip̄·ḥă·ḏū wə·’al- tir·hū hă·lō hiš·ma‘·tî·ḵā wə·hig·gaḏ·tî mê·’āz wə·’at·tem ‘ê·ḏāy hă·yêš ’ĕ·lō·w·ah mib·bal·‘ā·ḏay wə·’ên ṣūr yā·ḏā·‘ə·tî bal- — WLC · 8

All makers of idols are nothing, and the things they treasure vvv are worthless. Their witnesses… fail to see… or comprehend, so they are put to shame.

כֻּלָּם֙ יֹֽצְרֵי־ פֶ֤סֶל תֹּ֔הוּ וַחֲמוּדֵיהֶ֖ם בַּל־ יוֹעִ֑ילוּ וְעֵדֵיהֶ֣ם הֵׄ֗מָּׄהׄ בַּל־ יִרְא֛וּ וּבַל־ יֵדְע֖וּ לְמַ֥עַן יֵבֹֽשׁוּ׃ kul·lām yō·ṣə·rê- p̄e·sel tō·hū wa·ḥă·mū·ḏê·hem bal- yō·w·‘î·lū wə·‘ê·ḏê·hem hēm·må̄h bal- yir·’ū ū·ḇal- yê·ḏə·‘ū lə·ma·‘an yê·ḇō·šū — WLC · 9

Who fashions a god or casts an idol which profits him nothing?
𐤌𐤉 𐤉𐤑𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤍𐤎𐤊 𐤅𐤐𐤎𐤋 𐤄𐤅𐤏𐤉𐤋 𐤋𐤁𐤋𐤕𐤉
מִֽי־ יָצַ֥ר אֵ֖ל נָסָ֑ךְ וּפֶ֣סֶל הוֹעִֽיל׃ לְבִלְתִּ֖י mî- yā·ṣar ’êl nā·sāḵ ū·p̄e·sel hō·w·‘îl lə·ḇil·tî — WLC · 10

Behold, all his companions will be put to shame, for the craftsmen themselves are only human. Let them all assemble and take their stand; they will all be brought to terror and shame.

הֵ֤ן כָּל־ חֲבֵרָיו֙ יֵבֹ֔שׁוּ וְחָרָשִׁ֥ים הֵ֖מָּה מֵֽאָדָ֑ם כֻלָּם֙ יִֽתְקַבְּצ֤וּ יַֽעֲמֹ֔דוּ יָֽחַד׃ יִפְחֲד֖וּ יֵבֹ֥שׁוּ hên kāl- ḥă·ḇê·rāw yê·ḇō·šū wə·ḥā·rā·šîm hêm·māh mê·’ā·ḏām ḵul·lām yiṯ·qab·bə·ṣū ya·‘ă·mō·ḏū yā·ḥaḏ yip̄·ḥă·ḏū yê·ḇō·šū — WLC · 11

The blacksmith… takes a tool and labors over the coals; he fashions [an idol] with hammers and forges [it] with his strong arms. Yet he grows hungry and loses his strength…; he fails to drink water and grows faint.

חָרַ֤שׁ בַּרְזֶל֙ מַֽעֲצָ֔ד וּפָעַל֙ בַּפֶּחָ֔ם יִצְּרֵ֑הוּ וּבַמַּקָּב֖וֹת וַיִּפְעָלֵ֙הוּ֙ כֹּח֔וֹ בִּזְר֣וֹעַ גַּם־ רָעֵב֙ כֹּ֔חַ וְאֵ֣ין לֹא־ שָׁ֥תָה מַ֖יִם וַיִּיעָֽף׃ ḥā·raš bar·zel ma·‘ă·ṣāḏ ū·p̄ā·‘al bap·pe·ḥām yiṣ·ṣə·rê·hū ū·ḇam·maq·qā·ḇō·wṯ way·yip̄·‘ā·lê·hū kō·ḥōw biz·rō·w·a‘ gam- rā·‘êḇ kō·aḥ wə·’ên lō- šā·ṯāh ma·yim way·yî·‘āp̄ — WLC · 12

The woodworker… extends a measuring line; he marks it out with a stylus; he shapes it with chisels and outlines it with a compass. He fashions it in the likeness of man, like man in all his glory, that it may dwell in a shrine.

חָרַ֣שׁ עֵצִים֮ נָ֣טָה קָו֒ יְתָאֲרֵ֣הוּ בַשֶּׂ֔רֶד יַעֲשֵׂ֙הוּ֙ בַּמַּקְצֻע֔וֹת יְתָאֳרֵ֑הוּ וּבַמְּחוּגָ֖ה וַֽיַּעֲשֵׂ֙הוּ֙ כְּתַבְנִ֣ית אִ֔ישׁ אָדָ֖ם כְּתִפְאֶ֥רֶת לָשֶׁ֥בֶת בָּֽיִת׃ ḥā·raš ‘ê·ṣîm nā·ṭāh qāw yə·ṯā·’ă·rê·hū ḇaś·śe·reḏ ya·‘ă·śê·hū bam·maq·ṣu·‘ō·wṯ yə·ṯā·’o·rê·hū ū·ḇam·mə·ḥū·ḡāh way·ya·‘ă·śê·hū kə·ṯaḇ·nîṯ ’îš ’ā·ḏām kə·ṯip̄·’e·reṯ lā·še·ḇeṯ bā·yiṯ — WLC · 13

He cuts down cedars or retrieves a cypress or oak. He lets it grow strong among the trees of the forest. He plants a laurel, and the rain makes it grow.
𐤋𐤊𐤓𐤕 𐤋𐤅 𐤀𐤓𐤆𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤇 𐤕𐤓𐤆𐤄 𐤅𐤀𐤋𐤅𐤍 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤑 𐤋𐤅 𐤁𐤏𐤑𐤉 𐤉𐤏𐤓 𐤍𐤈𐤏 𐤀𐤓𐤍 𐤅𐤂𐤔𐤌 𐤉𐤂𐤃𐤋
לִכְרָת־ ל֣וֹ אֲרָזִ֔ים וַיִּקַּ֤ח תִּרְזָה֙ וְאַלּ֔וֹן וַיְאַמֶּץ־ ל֖וֹ בַּעֲצֵי־ יָ֑עַר נָטַ֥ע אֹ֖רֶן וְגֶ֥שֶׁם יְגַדֵּֽל׃ liḵ·rāṯ- lōw ’ă·rā·zîm way·yiq·qaḥ tir·zāh wə·’al·lō·wn way·’am·meṣ- lōw ba·‘ă·ṣê- yā·‘ar nā·ṭa‘ ʾō·rɛn wə·ḡe·šem yə·ḡad·dêl — WLC · 14

It serves as fuel for man. He takes some of it to warm himself, and he kindles a fire and bakes [his] bread. He also fashions it into a god and worships it; he makes an idol and bows down to it.
𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤋𐤁𐤏𐤓 𐤋𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤇 𐤌𐤄𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤇𐤌 𐤀𐤐 𐤉𐤔𐤉𐤒 𐤅𐤀𐤐𐤄 𐤋𐤇𐤌 𐤀𐤐 𐤉𐤐𐤏𐤋 𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤕𐤇𐤅 𐤏𐤔𐤄𐤅 𐤐𐤎𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤎𐤂𐤃 𐤋𐤌𐤅
וְהָיָ֤ה לְבָעֵ֔ר לְאָדָם֙ וַיִּקַּ֤ח מֵהֶם֙ וַיָּ֔חָם אַף־ יַשִּׂ֖יק וְאָ֣פָה לָ֑חֶם אַף־ יִפְעַל־ אֵל֙ וַיִּשְׁתָּ֔חוּ עָשָׂ֥הוּ פֶ֖סֶל וַיִּסְגָּד־ לָֽמוֹ׃ wə·hā·yāh lə·ḇā·‘êr lə·’ā·ḏām way·yiq·qaḥ mê·hem way·yā·ḥām ’ap̄- yaś·śîq wə·’ā·p̄āh lā·ḥem ’ap̄- yip̄·‘al- ’êl way·yiš·tā·ḥū ‘ā·śā·hū p̄e·sel way·yis·gāḏ- lā·mōw — WLC · 15

He burns half of it in the fire, and he roasts meat on that half. He eats the roast and is satisfied. Indeed, he warms himself and says, “Ah! I am warm; I see the fire.”

שָׂרַ֣ף חֶצְיוֹ֙ בְּמוֹ־ אֵ֔שׁ יִצְלֶ֥ה בָּשָׂ֣ר עַל־ חֶצְיוֹ֙ יֹאכֵ֔ל צָלִ֖י וְיִשְׂבָּ֑ע אַף־ יָחֹם֙ וְיֹאמַ֣ר הֶאָ֔ח חַמּוֹתִ֖י רָאִ֥יתִי אֽוּר׃ śā·rap̄ ḥeṣ·yōw bə·mōw- ’êš yiṣ·leh bā·śār ‘al- ḥeṣ·yōw yō·ḵêl ṣā·lî wə·yiś·bā‘ ’ap̄- yā·ḥōm wə·yō·mar he·’āḥ ḥam·mō·w·ṯî rā·’î·ṯî ’ūr — WLC · 16

From the rest he makes a god, his graven image. He bows down to it… and worships; he prays to it and says, “Save me, for you are my god.”

וּשְׁאֵ֣רִית֔וֹ עָשָׂ֖ה לְאֵ֥ל לְפִסְל֑וֹ יִסְגּוֹד ל֤וֹ וְיִשְׁתַּ֙חוּ֙ וְיִתְפַּלֵּ֣ל אֵלָ֔יו וְיֹאמַר֙ הַצִּילֵ֔נִי כִּ֥י אָֽתָּה׃ אֵלִ֖י ū·šə·’ê·rî·ṯōw ‘ā·śāh lə·’êl lə·p̄is·lōw yis·gōḏ lōw wə·yiš·ta·ḥū wə·yiṯ·pal·lêl ’ê·lāw wə·yō·mar haṣ·ṣî·lê·nî kî ’āt·tāh ’ê·lî — WLC · 17

They do not comprehend [or] discern, for He has shut their eyes so they cannot see and [closed] their minds so they cannot understand.

And no one considers in his heart, no one has the knowledge… or insight to say, “I burned half of it in the fire, and I baked bread on its coals; I roasted meat and I ate. Shall I make something detestable with the rest of it? Shall I bow down to a block of wood?”

He feeds on ashes. His deluded heart has led him astray, and he cannot deliver himself [or] say, “Is not this thing in my right hand a lie?”

Remember these things, O Jacob, for you are My servant, O Israel. I have made you, [and] you are My servant O Israel, [I] will never forget [you].

I have blotted out your transgressions like a cloud, and your sins like a mist. Return to Me, for I have redeemed you.
