Chapter 45
God Calls Cyrus
1
This is what the LORD says to Cyrus His anointed, whose right hand I have grasped to subdue nations… before him, to disarm kings, to open the doors before him, so that the gates will not be shut:
𐤊𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤋𐤊𐤅𐤓𐤔 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤋𐤌𐤔𐤉𐤇𐤅 𐤁𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤄𐤇𐤆𐤒𐤕𐤉 𐤋𐤓𐤃 𐤂𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤌𐤕𐤍𐤉 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤅 𐤀𐤐𐤕𐤇 𐤌𐤋𐤊𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤐𐤕𐤇 𐤃𐤋𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤔𐤏𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤎𐤂𐤓𐤅
כֹּה־ יְהוָה֮ אָמַ֣ר לְכ֣וֹרֶשׁ אֲשֶׁר־ לִמְשִׁיחוֹ֮ בִֽימִינ֗וֹ הֶחֱזַ֣קְתִּי לְרַד־ גּוֹיִ֔ם וּמָתְנֵ֥י לְפָנָיו֙ אֲפַתֵּ֑חַ מְלָכִ֖ים לִפְתֹּ֤חַ דְּלָתַ֔יִם לְפָנָיו֙ וּשְׁעָרִ֖ים לֹ֥א יִסָּגֵֽרוּ׃ kōh- Yah·weh ’ā·mar lə·ḵō·w·reš ’ă·šer- lim·šî·ḥōw ḇî·mî·nōw he·ḥĕ·zaq·tî lə·raḏ- gō·w·yim ū·mā·ṯə·nê lə·p̄ā·nāw ’ă·p̄at·tê·aḥ mə·lā·ḵîm lip̄·tō·aḥ də·lā·ṯa·yim lə·p̄ā·nāw ū·šə·‘ā·rîm lō yis·sā·ḡê·rū — WLC · 1

“I will go before you and level the mountains; I will break down the gates of bronze and cut through the bars of iron.
𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤋𐤊 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤊 𐤀𐤅𐤔𐤓 𐤅𐤄𐤃𐤅𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤁𐤓 𐤃𐤋𐤕𐤅𐤕 𐤍𐤇𐤅𐤔𐤄 𐤀𐤂𐤃𐤏 𐤅𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤇𐤉 𐤁𐤓𐤆𐤋
אֲנִי֙ אֵלֵ֔ךְ לְפָנֶ֣יךָ אוֹשִׁר וַהֲדוּרִ֖ים אֲשַׁבֵּ֔ר דַּלְת֤וֹת נְחוּשָׁה֙ אֲגַדֵּֽעַ׃ וּבְרִיחֵ֥י בַרְזֶ֖ל ’ă·nî ’ê·lêḵ lə·p̄ā·ne·ḵā ʾō·šir wa·hă·ḏū·rîm ’ă·šab·bêr dal·ṯō·wṯ nə·ḥū·šāh ’ă·ḡad·dê·a‘ ū·ḇə·rî·ḥê ḇar·zel — WLC · 2

I will give you the treasures of darkness and the riches hidden in secret places, so that you may know that I [am] the LORD, the God of Israel, who calls you by name.
𐤅𐤍𐤕𐤕𐤉 𐤋𐤊 𐤀𐤅𐤑𐤓𐤅𐤕 𐤇𐤔𐤊 𐤅𐤌𐤈𐤌𐤍𐤉 𐤌𐤎𐤕𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤌𐤏𐤍 𐤕𐤃𐤏 𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤒𐤅𐤓𐤀 𐤁𐤔𐤌𐤊
וְנָתַתִּ֤י לְךָ֙ אוֹצְר֣וֹת חֹ֔שֶׁךְ וּמַטְמֻנֵ֖י מִסְתָּרִ֑ים לְמַ֣עַן תֵּדַ֗ע כִּֽי־ אֲנִ֧י יְהוָ֛ה אֱלֹהֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ הַקּוֹרֵ֥א בְשִׁמְךָ֖ wə·nā·ṯat·tî lə·ḵā ’ō·wṣ·rō·wṯ ḥō·šeḵ ū·maṭ·mu·nê mis·tā·rîm lə·ma·‘an tê·ḏa‘ kî- ’ă·nî Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê yiś·rā·’êl haq·qō·w·rê ḇə·šim·ḵā — WLC · 3

For the sake of Jacob My servant and Israel My chosen one, I call you by name; I have given you a title of honor, though you have not known Me.

לְמַ֙עַן֙ יַעֲקֹ֔ב עַבְדִּ֣י וְיִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל בְּחִירִ֑י וָאֶקְרָ֤א לְךָ֙ בִּשְׁמֶ֔ךָ אֲכַנְּךָ֖ וְלֹ֥א יְדַעְתָּֽנִי׃ lə·ma·‘an ya·‘ă·qōḇ ‘aḇ·dî wə·yiś·rā·’êl bə·ḥî·rî wā·’eq·rā lə·ḵā biš·me·ḵā ’ă·ḵan·nə·ḵā wə·lō yə·ḏa‘·tā·nî — WLC · 4

I am the LORD, and there is no other; there is no God but Me. I will equip you for battle, though you have not known Me,

אֲנִ֤י יְהוָה֙ וְאֵ֣ין ע֔וֹד אֵ֣ין אֱלֹהִ֑ים זוּלָתִ֖י אֲאַזֶּרְךָ֖ וְלֹ֥א יְדַעְתָּֽנִי׃ ’ă·nî Yah·weh wə·’ên ‘ō·wḏ ’ên ’ĕ·lō·hîm zū·lā·ṯî ’ă·’az·zer·ḵā wə·lō yə·ḏa‘·tā·nî — WLC · 5

so that all may know, from where the sun rises… to where it sets, that there is none but Me; I am the LORD, and there is no other.

לְמַ֣עַן יֵדְע֗וּ מִמִּזְרַח־ שֶׁ֙מֶשׁ֙ וּמִמַּ֣עֲרָבָ֔הּ כִּי־ אֶ֖פֶס בִּלְעָדָ֑י אֲנִ֥י יְהוָ֖ה וְאֵ֥ין עֽוֹד׃ lə·ma·‘an yê·ḏə·‘ū mim·miz·raḥ- še·meš ū·mim·ma·‘ă·rā·ḇāh kî- ’e·p̄es bil·‘ā·ḏāy ’ă·nî Yah·weh wə·’ên ‘ō·wḏ — WLC · 6

I form the light and create the darkness; I bring prosperity and create calamity. I, the LORD, do all these things.

יוֹצֵ֥ר אוֹר֙ וּבוֹרֵ֣א חֹ֔שֶׁךְ עֹשֶׂ֥ה שָׁל֖וֹם וּב֣וֹרֵא רָ֑ע אֲנִ֥י יְהוָ֖ה עֹשֶׂ֥ה כָל־ אֵֽלֶּה׃ס yō·w·ṣêr ’ō·wr ū·ḇō·w·rê ḥō·šeḵ ‘ō·śeh šā·lō·wm ū·ḇō·w·rê rā‘ ’ă·nî Yah·weh ‘ō·śeh ḵāl ’êl·leh — WLC · 7

Drip down, O heavens, from above, and let the skies pour down righteousness. Let the earth open up that salvation may sprout and righteousness spring up with it; I, the LORD, have created it.

הַרְעִ֤יפוּ שָׁמַ֙יִם֙ מִמַּ֔עַל וּשְׁחָקִ֖ים יִזְּלוּ־ צֶ֑דֶק אֶ֣רֶץ תִּפְתַּח־ יֶ֗שַׁע וְיִפְרוּ־ וּצְדָקָ֤ה תַצְמִ֙יחַ֙ יַ֔חַד אֲנִ֥י יְהוָ֖ה בְּרָאתִֽיו׃ס har·‘î·p̄ū šā·ma·yim mim·ma·‘al ū·šə·ḥā·qîm yiz·zə·lū- ṣe·ḏeq ’e·reṣ tip̄·taḥ- ye·ša‘ wə·yip̄·rū- ū·ṣə·ḏā·qāh ṯaṣ·mî·aḥ ya·ḥaḏ ’ă·nî Yah·weh bə·rā·ṯîw — WLC · 8

Woe to him who quarrels with his Maker— one clay pot… among many… Does the clay ask the potter, ‘What are you making?’ Does your work say, ‘He has no hands

ה֗וֹי רָ֚ב אֶת־ יֹ֣צְר֔וֹ חֶ֖רֶשׂ אֶת־ חַרְשֵׂ֣י אֲדָמָ֑ה חֹ֤מֶר הֲיֹאמַ֨ר לְיֹֽצְרוֹ֙ מַֽה־ תַּעֲשֶׂ֔ה וּפָעָלְךָ֖ אֵין־ יָדַ֥יִם לֽוֹ׃ס hō·w rāḇ ’eṯ- yō·ṣə·rōw ḥe·reś ’eṯ- ḥar·śê ’ă·ḏā·māh ḥō·mer hă·yō·mar lə·yō·ṣə·rōw mah- ta·‘ă·śeh ū·p̄ā·‘ā·lə·ḵā ’ên- yā·ḏa·yim lōw — WLC · 9

Woe to him who says to his father, ‘What have you begotten?’ or to his mother, ‘What have you brought forth?’”

ה֛וֹי אֹמֵ֥ר לְאָ֖ב מַה־ תּוֹלִ֑יד וּלְאִשָּׁ֖ה מַה־ תְּחִילִֽין׃ס hō·w ’ō·mêr lə·’āḇ mah- tō·w·lîḏ ū·lə·’iš·šāh mah- tə·ḥî·lîn — WLC · 10

Thus says the LORD, the Holy One of Israel, and its Maker: “Concerning things to come, do you question Me about My sons, or instruct Me in the work of My hands?
𐤊𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤒𐤃𐤅𐤔 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤑𐤓𐤅 𐤄𐤀𐤕𐤉𐤅𐤕 𐤔𐤀𐤋𐤅𐤍𐤉 𐤏𐤋 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤕𐤑𐤅𐤍𐤉 𐤅𐤏𐤋 𐤐𐤏𐤋 𐤉𐤃𐤉
כֹּֽה־ אָמַ֧ר יְהוָ֛ה קְד֥וֹשׁ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל וְיֹצְר֑וֹ הָאֹתִיּ֣וֹת שְׁאָל֔וּנִי עַל־ בָּנַ֛י תְּצַוֻּֽנִי׃ וְעַל־ פֹּ֥עַל יָדַ֖י kōh- ’ā·mar Yah·weh qə·ḏō·wōš yiś·rā·’êl wə·yō·ṣə·rōw hā·’ō·ṯî·yō·wṯ šə·’ā·lū·nî ‘al- bā·nay tə·ṣaw·wu·nî wə·‘al- pō·‘al yā·ḏay — WLC · 11

It is I who made the earth and created… man upon it. It was My hands that stretched out the heavens, and I ordained all their host.
𐤀𐤍𐤊𐤉 𐤏𐤔𐤉𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤁𐤓𐤀𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤅𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤄 𐤉𐤃𐤉 𐤍𐤈𐤅 𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤑𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤉 𐤅𐤊𐤋 𐤑𐤁𐤀𐤌
אָֽנֹכִי֙ עָשִׂ֣יתִי אֶ֔רֶץ בָרָ֑אתִי אֲנִ֗י וְאָדָ֖ם עָלֶ֣יהָ יָדַי֙ נָט֣וּ שָׁמַ֔יִם צִוֵּֽיתִי׃ וְכָל־ צְבָאָ֖ם ’ā·nō·ḵî ‘ā·śî·ṯî ’e·reṣ ḇā·rā·ṯî ’ă·nî wə·’ā·ḏām ‘ā·le·hā yā·ḏay nā·ṭū šā·ma·yim ṣiw·wê·ṯî wə·ḵāl ṣə·ḇā·’ām — WLC · 12

I will raise up [Cyrus] in righteousness, and I will make all his ways [straight]. He will rebuild My city and set My exiles free, but not for payment [or] reward, says the LORD of Hosts.”

אָנֹכִי֙ הַעִירֹתִ֣הֽוּ בְצֶ֔דֶק אֲיַשֵּׁ֑ר וְכָל־ דְּרָכָ֖יו הֽוּא־ יִבְנֶ֤ה עִירִי֙ וְגָלוּתִ֣י יְשַׁלֵּ֔חַ לֹ֤א בִמְחִיר֙ וְלֹ֣א בְשֹׁ֔חַד אָמַ֖ר יְהוָ֥ה צְבָאֽוֹת׃פ ’ā·nō·ḵî ha·‘î·rō·ṯi·hū ḇə·ṣe·ḏeq ’ă·yaš·šêr wə·ḵāl də·rā·ḵāw hū- yiḇ·neh ‘î·rî wə·ḡā·lū·ṯî yə·šal·lê·aḥ lō ḇim·ḥîr wə·lō ḇə·šō·ḥaḏ ’ā·mar Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ — WLC · 13

This is what the LORD says: “The products of Egypt and the merchandise of Cush, along with the Sabeans, men of stature, will come over to you and will be yours; they will trudge behind you; they will come over in chains and bow down to you. They will confess to you: ‘God is indeed with you, and there is no other; there is no other God.’”

כֹּ֣ה׀ יְהוָ֗ה אָמַ֣ר יְגִ֨יעַ מִצְרַ֥יִם וּֽסְחַר־ כּוּשׁ֮ וּסְבָאִים֮ אַנְשֵׁ֣י מִדָּה֒ יַעֲבֹ֙רוּ֙ עָלַ֤יִךְ יִֽהְי֔וּ וְלָ֣ךְ אַחֲרַ֣יִךְ יֵלֵ֔כוּ יַעֲבֹ֑רוּ בַּזִּקִּ֖ים יִֽשְׁתַּחֲוּוּ֙ וְאֵלַ֤יִךְ יִתְפַּלָּ֔לוּ אֵלַ֣יִךְ אֵ֛ל אַ֣ךְ בָּ֥ךְ וְאֵ֥ין ע֖וֹד אֶ֥פֶס אֱלֹהִֽים׃ kōh Yah·weh ’ā·mar yə·ḡî·a‘ miṣ·ra·yim ū·sə·ḥar- kūš ū·sə·ḇā·’îm ’an·šê mid·dāh ya·‘ă·ḇō·rū ‘ā·la·yiḵ yih·yū wə·lāḵ ’a·ḥă·ra·yiḵ yê·lê·ḵū ya·‘ă·ḇō·rū baz·ziq·qîm yiš·ta·ḥăw·wū wə·’ê·la·yiḵ yiṯ·pal·lā·lū ’ê·la·yiḵ ’êl ’aḵ bāḵ wə·’ên ‘ō·wḏ ’e·p̄es ’ĕ·lō·hîm — WLC · 14

Truly You are a God who hides Himself, O God of Israel, the Savior.
𐤀𐤊𐤍 𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤎𐤕𐤕𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤅𐤔𐤉𐤏
אָכֵ֕ן אַתָּ֖ה אֵ֣ל מִסְתַּתֵּ֑ר אֱלֹהֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל מוֹשִֽׁיעַ׃ ’ā·ḵên ’at·tāh ’êl mis·tat·têr ’ĕ·lō·hê yiś·rā·’êl mō·wō·šî·a‘ — WLC · 15

They will all be put to shame and humiliated; the makers of idols will depart together in disgrace.
𐤊𐤋𐤌 𐤁𐤅𐤔𐤅 𐤅𐤂𐤌 𐤍𐤊𐤋𐤌𐤅 𐤇𐤓𐤔𐤉 𐤑𐤉𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤋𐤊𐤅 𐤉𐤇𐤃𐤅 𐤁𐤊𐤋𐤌𐤄
כֻּלָּ֑ם בּ֥וֹשׁוּ וְגַֽם־ נִכְלְמ֖וּ חָרָשֵׁ֖י צִירִֽים׃ הָלְכ֣וּ יַחְדָּו֙ בַכְּלִמָּ֔ה kul·lām bō·wō·šū wə·ḡam- niḵ·lə·mū ḥā·rā·šê ṣî·rîm hā·lə·ḵū yaḥ·dāw ḇak·kə·lim·māh — WLC · 16

[But] Israel will be saved by the LORD with an everlasting salvation; you will not be put to shame… or humiliated, to ages everlasting.

יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ נוֹשַׁ֣ע בַּיהוָ֔ה עוֹלָמִ֑ים תְּשׁוּעַ֖ת לֹא־ תֵבֹ֥שׁוּ וְלֹא־ תִכָּלְמ֖וּ עַד־ ע֥וֹלְמֵי עַֽד׃פ yiś·rā·’êl nō·wō·ša‘ Yah·weh ‘ō·w·lā·mîm tə·šū·‘aṯ lō- ṯê·ḇō·šū wə·lō- ṯik·kā·lə·mū ‘aḏ- ‘ō·wl·mê ‘aḏ — WLC · 17

For thus says the LORD, who created the heavens— He [is] God; He formed the earth and fashioned it; He established it; He did not create it to be empty, but formed it to be inhabited: “I am the LORD, and there is no other.

I have not spoken in secret, from a place in a land of darkness. I did not say to the descendants of Jacob, ‘Seek Me in a wasteland.’ I, the LORD, speak the truth; I say what is right.

Speak up and present your case— yes, let them take counsel together. Who foretold this long ago? Who announced it from ancient times? Was it not I, the LORD? There is no other God but Me, a righteous God and Savior; there is none but Me.

By Myself I have sworn; truth has gone out from My mouth, a word that will not be revoked…: Every knee will bow before Me, every tongue will swear [allegiance].

Surely they will say of Me, ‘In the LORD alone [are] righteousness and strength.’” All who rage against Him will come to Him and be put to shame.

In the LORD all descendants of Israel will be justified and will exult.
