Chapter 5

The Song of the Vineyard

I will sing… for my beloved a song of [his] vineyard: My beloved had a vineyard on a very fertile… hill.

𐤀𐤔𐤉𐤓𐤄 𐤍𐤀 𐤋𐤉𐤃𐤉𐤃𐤉 𐤔𐤉𐤓𐤕 𐤃𐤅𐤃𐤉 𐤋𐤊𐤓𐤌𐤅 𐤋𐤉𐤃𐤉𐤃𐤉 𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤊𐤓𐤌 𐤁𐤍 𐤔𐤌𐤍 𐤁𐤒𐤓𐤍

אָשִׁ֤ירָה נָּא֙ לִֽידִידִ֔י שִׁירַ֥ת דּוֹדִ֖י לְכַרְמ֑וֹ לִֽידִידִ֖י הָיָ֥ה כֶּ֛רֶם בֶּן־ שָֽׁמֶן׃ בְּקֶ֥רֶן ’ā·šî·rāh nā lî·ḏî·ḏî šî·raṯ dō·w·ḏî lə·ḵar·mōw lî·ḏî·ḏî hā·yāh ke·rem ben- šā·men bə·qe·renWLC · 1

He dug it up and cleared the stones and planted the finest vines. He built a watchtower in the middle and dug out a winepress {as well}. He waited for [the vineyard] to yield good grapes, but the fruit it produced was sour!

וַֽיְעַזְּקֵ֣הוּ וַֽיְסַקְּלֵ֗הוּ וַיִּטָּעֵ֙הוּ֙ שֹׂרֵ֔ק וַיִּ֤בֶן מִגְדָּל֙ בְּתוֹכ֔וֹ וְגַם־ חָצֵ֣ב בּ֑וֹ יֶ֖קֶב וַיְקַ֛ו לַעֲשׂ֥וֹת עֲנָבִ֖ים וַיַּ֥עַשׂ בְּאֻשִֽׁים׃ way·‘az·zə·qê·hū way·saq·qə·lê·hū way·yiṭ·ṭā·‘ê·hū śō·rêq way·yi·ḇen miḡ·dāl bə·ṯō·w·ḵōw wə·ḡam- ḥā·ṣêḇ bōw ye·qeḇ way·qaw la·‘ă·śō·wṯ ‘ă·nā·ḇîm way·ya·‘aś bə·’u·šîmWLC · 2

“And now, O dwellers of Jerusalem and men of Judah, I exhort you to judge between Me… and My vineyard.

𐤅𐤏𐤕𐤄 𐤉𐤅𐤔𐤁 𐤉𐤓𐤅𐤔𐤋𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤍𐤀 𐤔𐤐𐤈𐤅 𐤁𐤉𐤍𐤉 𐤅𐤁𐤉𐤍 𐤊𐤓𐤌𐤉

וְעַתָּ֛ה יוֹשֵׁ֥ב יְרוּשָׁלִַ֖ם וְאִ֣ישׁ יְהוּדָ֑ה נָ֕א שִׁפְטוּ־ בֵּינִ֖י וּבֵ֥ין כַּרְמִֽי׃ wə·‘at·tāh yō·wō·šêḇ yə·rū·šā·lim wə·’îš yə·hū·ḏāh nā šip̄·ṭū- bê·nî ū·ḇên kar·mîWLC · 3

What more could have been done for My vineyard than I have done for it? Why, when I expected [sweet] grapes, did it bring forth sour fruit?

𐤌𐤄 𐤏𐤅𐤃 𐤋𐤏𐤔𐤅𐤕 𐤋𐤊𐤓𐤌𐤉 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤏𐤔𐤉𐤕𐤉 𐤁𐤅 𐤌𐤃𐤅𐤏 𐤒𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤉 𐤋𐤏𐤔𐤅𐤕 𐤏𐤍𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤔 𐤁𐤀𐤔𐤉𐤌

מַה־ עוֹד֙ לַּעֲשׂ֥וֹת לְכַרְמִ֔י וְלֹ֥א עָשִׂ֖יתִי בּ֑וֹ מַדּ֧וּעַ קִוֵּ֛יתִי לַעֲשׂ֥וֹת עֲנָבִ֖ים וַיַּ֥עַשׂ בְּאֻשִֽׁים׃ mah- ‘ō·wḏ la·‘ă·śō·wṯ lə·ḵar·mî wə·lō ‘ā·śî·ṯî bōw mad·dū·a‘ qiw·wê·ṯî la·‘ă·śō·wṯ ‘ă·nā·ḇîm way·ya·‘aś bə·’u·šîmWLC · 4

Now I will tell you… - what I am about to do to My vineyard: I will take away its hedge, and it will be consumed; I will tear down its wall, and it will be trampled.

וְעַתָּה֙ אוֹדִֽיעָה־ נָּ֣א אֶתְכֶ֔ם אֵ֛ת אֲשֶׁר־ אֲנִ֥י עֹשֶׂ֖ה לְכַרְמִ֑י הָסֵ֤ר מְשׂוּכָּתוֹ֙ וְהָיָ֣ה לְבָעֵ֔ר פָּרֹ֥ץ גְּדֵר֖וֹ וְהָיָ֥ה לְמִרְמָֽס׃ wə·‘at·tāh ’ō·w·ḏî·‘āh- nā ’eṯ·ḵem ’êṯ ’ă·šer- ’ă·nî ‘ō·śeh lə·ḵar·mî hā·sêr mə·śū·kā·ṯōw wə·hā·yāh lə·ḇā·‘êr pā·rōṣ gə·ḏê·rōw wə·hā·yāh lə·mir·māsWLC · 5

I will make it a wasteland, neither pruned nor cultivated, and thorns and briers will grow up. I will command the clouds that rain shall not fall on it.”

וַאֲשִׁיתֵ֣הוּ בָתָ֗ה לֹ֤א יִזָּמֵר֙ וְלֹ֣א יֵעָדֵ֔ר וָשָׁ֑יִת שָׁמִ֖יר וְעָלָ֥ה אֲצַוֶּ֔ה וְעַ֤ל הֶעָבִים֙ מָטָֽר׃ מֵהַמְטִ֥יר עָלָ֖יו wa·’ă·šî·ṯê·hū ḇā·ṯāh lō yiz·zā·mêr wə·lō yê·‘ā·ḏêr wā·šā·yiṯ šā·mîr wə·‘ā·lāh ’ă·ṣaw·weh wə·‘al he·‘ā·ḇîm mā·ṭār mê·ham·ṭîr ‘ā·lāwWLC · 6

For the vineyard of the LORD of Hosts is the house of Israel, and the men of Judah are the plant of His delight. He looked for justice, but saw bloodshed; for righteousness, but heard a cry of distress.

Woes to the Wicked

Woe to you who add house to house and join field to field until no place [is left] and you live alone in the land.

𐤄𐤅𐤉 𐤌𐤂𐤉𐤏𐤉 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤁𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤉𐤒𐤓𐤉𐤁𐤅 𐤔𐤃𐤄 𐤁𐤔𐤃𐤄 𐤏𐤃 𐤀𐤐𐤎 𐤌𐤒𐤅𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤁𐤕𐤌 𐤋𐤁𐤃𐤊𐤌 𐤁𐤒𐤓𐤁 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑

ה֗וֹי מַגִּיעֵ֥י בַ֙יִת֙ בְּבַ֔יִת יַקְרִ֑יבוּ שָׂדֶ֥ה בְשָׂדֶ֖ה עַ֚ד אֶ֣פֶס מָק֔וֹם וְהֽוּשַׁבְתֶּ֥ם לְבַדְּכֶ֖ם בְּקֶ֥רֶב הָאָֽרֶץ׃ hō·w mag·gî·‘ê ḇa·yiṯ bə·ḇa·yiṯ yaq·rî·ḇū śā·ḏeh ḇə·śā·ḏeh ‘aḏ ’e·p̄es mā·qō·wm wə·hū·šaḇ·tem lə·ḇad·də·ḵem bə·qe·reḇ hā·’ā·reṣWLC · 8

I heard the LORD of Hosts {declare}: “Surely… many houses will become desolate, great mansions… vvv left unoccupied.

𐤁𐤀𐤆𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤑𐤁𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤌 𐤋𐤀 𐤓𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤄𐤉𐤅 𐤋𐤔𐤌𐤄 𐤂𐤃𐤋𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤈𐤅𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤀𐤉𐤍 𐤉𐤅𐤔𐤁

בְּאָזְנָ֖י יְהוָ֣ה צְבָא֑וֹת אִם־ לֹ֞א רַבִּים֙ בָּתִּ֤ים יִֽהְי֔וּ לְשַׁמָּ֣ה גְּדֹלִ֥ים וְטוֹבִ֖ים מֵאֵ֥ין יוֹשֵֽׁב׃ bə·’ā·zə·nāy Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ ’im- lō rab·bîm bāt·tîm yih·yū lə·šam·māh gə·ḏō·lîm wə·ṭō·w·ḇîm mê·’ên yō·wō·šêḇWLC · 9

For ten acres of vineyard will yield [but] a bath [of wine], and a homer of seed [only] an ephah [of grain].

𐤊𐤉 𐤏𐤔𐤓𐤕 𐤑𐤌𐤃𐤉 𐤊𐤓𐤌 𐤉𐤏𐤔𐤅 𐤀𐤇𐤕 𐤁𐤕 𐤇𐤌𐤓 𐤅𐤆𐤓𐤏 𐤉𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤀𐤉𐤐𐤄𐤐

כִּ֗י עֲשֶׂ֙רֶת֙ צִמְדֵּי־ כֶ֔רֶם יַעֲשׂ֖וּ אֶחָ֑ת בַּ֣ת חֹ֖מֶר וְזֶ֥רַע יַעֲשֶׂ֥ה אֵיפָֽה׃פ kî ‘ă·śe·reṯ ṣim·dê- ḵe·rem ya·‘ă·śū ’e·ḥāṯ baṯ ḥō·mer wə·ze·ra‘ ya·‘ă·śeh ’ê·p̄āhWLC · 10

Woe to those who rise early in the morning in pursuit of strong drink, who linger into the evening, to be inflamed by wine.

𐤄𐤅𐤉 𐤌𐤔𐤊𐤉𐤌𐤉 𐤁𐤁𐤒𐤓 𐤉𐤓𐤃𐤐𐤅 𐤔𐤊𐤓 𐤌𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤉 𐤁𐤍𐤔𐤐 𐤉𐤃𐤋𐤉𐤒𐤌 𐤉𐤉𐤍

ה֛וֹי מַשְׁכִּימֵ֥י בַבֹּ֖קֶר יִרְדֹּ֑פוּ שֵׁכָ֣ר מְאַחֲרֵ֣י בַנֶּ֔שֶׁף יַדְלִיקֵֽם׃ יַ֖יִן hō·w maš·kî·mê ḇab·bō·qer yir·dō·p̄ū šê·ḵār mə·’a·ḥă·rê ḇan·ne·šep̄ yaḏ·lî·qêm ya·yinWLC · 11

  • At their feasts are the lyre [and] harp, tambourines and flutes and wine. They disregard the actions of the LORD and fail to see the work of His hands.

𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤌𐤔𐤕𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤊𐤍𐤅𐤓 𐤅𐤍𐤁𐤋 𐤕𐤐 𐤅𐤇𐤋𐤉𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤉𐤍 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤁𐤉𐤈𐤅 𐤐𐤏𐤋 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤋𐤀 𐤓𐤀𐤅 𐤅𐤌𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤉𐤃𐤉𐤅

וְהָיָ֨ה מִשְׁתֵּיהֶ֑ם וְאֵ֨ת כִנּ֜וֹר וָנֶ֗בֶל תֹּ֧ף וְחָלִ֛יל וָיַ֖יִן לֹ֣א יַבִּ֔יטוּ פֹּ֤עַל יְהוָה֙ לֹ֥א רָאֽוּ׃ וּמַעֲשֵׂ֥ה יָדָ֖יו wə·hā·yāh miš·tê·hem wə·’êṯ ḵin·nō·wr wā·ne·ḇel tōp̄ wə·ḥā·lîl wā·ya·yin lō yab·bî·ṭū pō·‘al Yah·weh lō rā·’ū ū·ma·‘ă·śêh yā·ḏāwWLC · 12

Therefore My people will go into exile for their lack of understanding; their dignitaries… are starving and their masses are parched with thirst.

𐤋𐤊𐤍 𐤏𐤌𐤉 𐤂𐤋𐤄 𐤌𐤁𐤋𐤉 𐤃𐤏𐤕 𐤅𐤊𐤁𐤅𐤃𐤅 𐤌𐤕𐤉 𐤓𐤏𐤁 𐤅𐤄𐤌𐤅𐤍𐤅 𐤑𐤇𐤄 𐤑𐤌𐤀

לָכֵ֛ן עַמִּ֖י גָּלָ֥ה מִבְּלִי־ דָ֑עַת וּכְבוֹדוֹ֙ מְתֵ֣י רָעָ֔ב וַהֲמוֹנ֖וֹ צִחֵ֥ה צָמָֽא׃ lā·ḵên ‘am·mî gā·lāh mib·bə·lî- ḏā·‘aṯ ū·ḵə·ḇō·w·ḏōw mə·ṯê rā·‘āḇ wa·hă·mō·w·nōw ṣi·ḥêh ṣā·māWLC · 13

Therefore Sheol enlarges its throat and opens wide its enormous… jaws, and down go [Zion’s] nobles [and] masses, her revelers and carousers

𐤋𐤊𐤍 𐤔𐤀𐤅𐤋 𐤄𐤓𐤇𐤉𐤁𐤄 𐤍𐤐𐤔𐤄 𐤅𐤐𐤏𐤓𐤄 𐤋𐤁𐤋𐤉 𐤇𐤒 𐤐𐤉𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤃 𐤄𐤃𐤓𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤌𐤅𐤍𐤄 𐤅𐤔𐤀𐤅𐤍𐤄 𐤅𐤏𐤋𐤆 𐤁𐤄

לָכֵ֗ן שְּׁאוֹל֙ הִרְחִ֤יבָה נַפְשָׁ֔הּ וּפָעֲרָ֥ה לִבְלִי־ חֹ֑ק פִ֖יהָ וְיָרַ֨ד הֲדָרָ֧הּ וַהֲמוֹנָ֛הּ וּשְׁאוֹנָ֖הּ וְעָלֵ֥ז בָּֽהּ׃ lā·ḵên šə·’ō·wl hir·ḥî·ḇāh nap̄·šāh ū·p̄ā·‘ă·rāh liḇ·lî- ḥōq p̄î·hā wə·yā·raḏ hă·ḏā·rāh wa·hă·mō·w·nāh ū·šə·’ō·w·nāh wə·‘ā·lêz bāhWLC · 14

So mankind will be brought low, and each man humbled; the arrogant will lower their eyes.

𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤇 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤐𐤋 𐤂𐤁𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤕𐤔𐤐𐤋𐤍𐤄 𐤅𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉

אָדָ֖ם וַיִּשַּׁ֥ח אִ֑ישׁ וַיִּשְׁפַּל־ גְבֹהִ֖ים תִּשְׁפַּֽלְנָה׃ וְעֵינֵ֥י ’ā·ḏām way·yiš·šaḥ ’îš way·yiš·pal- ḡə·ḇō·hîm tiš·pal·nāh wə·‘ê·nêWLC · 15

But the LORD of Hosts will be exalted by His justice, and the holy God will show Himself holy in righteousness.

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤑𐤁𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤂𐤁𐤄 𐤁𐤌𐤔𐤐𐤈 𐤄𐤒𐤃𐤅𐤔 𐤅𐤄𐤀𐤋 𐤍𐤒𐤃𐤔 𐤁𐤑𐤃𐤒𐤄

יְהוָ֥ה צְבָא֖וֹת וַיִּגְבַּ֛ה בַּמִּשְׁפָּ֑ט הַקָּד֔וֹשׁ וְהָאֵל֙ נִקְדָּ֖שׁ בִּצְדָקָֽה׃ Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ way·yiḡ·bah bam·miš·pāṭ haq·qā·ḏō·wōš wə·hā·’êl niq·dāš biṣ·ḏā·qāhWLC · 16

Lambs will graze as in their own pastures, and strangers will feed in the ruins of the wealthy.

𐤊𐤁𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤓𐤏𐤅 𐤊𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤌 𐤂𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤀𐤊𐤋𐤅 𐤅𐤇𐤓𐤁𐤅𐤕 𐤌𐤇𐤉𐤌

כְבָשִׂ֖ים וְרָע֥וּ כְּדָבְרָ֑ם גָּרִ֥ים יֹאכֵֽלוּ׃ וְחָרְב֥וֹת מֵחִ֖ים ḵə·ḇā·śîm wə·rā·‘ū kə·ḏā·ḇə·rām gā·rîm yō·ḵê·lū wə·ḥā·rə·ḇō·wṯ mê·ḥîmWLC · 17

18

Woe to those who draw iniquity with cords of deceit and pull sin along with cart ropes,

𐤄𐤅𐤉 𐤌𐤔𐤊𐤉 𐤄𐤏𐤅𐤍 𐤁𐤇𐤁𐤋𐤉 𐤄𐤔𐤅𐤀 𐤇𐤈𐤀𐤄 𐤄𐤏𐤂𐤋𐤄 𐤅𐤊𐤏𐤁𐤅𐤕

ה֛וֹי מֹשְׁכֵ֥י הֶֽעָוֺ֖ן בְּחַבְלֵ֣י הַשָּׁ֑וְא חַטָּאָֽה׃ הָעֲגָלָ֖ה וְכַעֲב֥וֹת hō·w mō·šə·ḵê he·‘ā·wōn bə·ḥaḇ·lê haš·šāw ḥaṭ·ṭā·’āh hā·‘ă·ḡā·lāh wə·ḵa·‘ă·ḇō·wṯWLC · 18

to those who say, “Let Him hurry and hasten His work… so that we may see it!… Let the plan of the Holy One of Israel come so that we may know it!”

𐤄𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤌𐤄𐤓 𐤌𐤏𐤔𐤄𐤅 𐤉𐤇𐤉𐤔𐤄 𐤋𐤌𐤏𐤍 𐤍𐤓𐤀𐤄 𐤅𐤕𐤒𐤓𐤁 𐤏𐤑𐤕 𐤒𐤃𐤅𐤔 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤕𐤁𐤅𐤀𐤄 𐤅𐤍𐤃𐤏𐤄𐤎

הָאֹמְרִ֗ים יְמַהֵ֧ר׀ מַעֲשֵׂ֖הוּ יָחִ֛ישָׁה לְמַ֣עַן נִרְאֶ֑ה וְתִקְרַ֣ב עֲצַ֛ת קְד֥וֹשׁ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל וְתָב֗וֹאָה וְנֵדָֽעָה׃ס hā·’ō·mə·rîm yə·ma·hêr ma·‘ă·śê·hū yā·ḥî·šāh lə·ma·‘an nir·’eh wə·ṯiq·raḇ ‘ă·ṣaṯ qə·ḏō·wōš yiś·rā·’êl wə·ṯā·ḇō·w·’āh wə·nê·ḏā·‘āhWLC · 19

Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who turn darkness to light and light to darkness, who replace bitter with sweet and sweet with bitter.

Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes and clever in their own sight.

Woe to those who are heroes in drinking wine and champions… in mixing strong drink,

𐤄𐤅𐤉 𐤂𐤁𐤅𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤔𐤕𐤅𐤕 𐤉𐤉𐤍 𐤅𐤀𐤍𐤔𐤉 𐤇𐤉𐤋 𐤋𐤌𐤎𐤊 𐤔𐤊𐤓

ה֕וֹי גִּבּוֹרִ֖ים לִשְׁתּ֣וֹת יָ֑יִן וְאַנְשֵׁי־ חַ֖יִל לִמְסֹ֥ךְ שֵׁכָֽר׃ hō·w gib·bō·w·rîm liš·tō·wṯ yā·yin wə·’an·šê- ḥa·yil lim·sōḵ šê·ḵārWLC · 22

who acquit the guilty for a bribe and deprive the innocent… of justice.

𐤌𐤑𐤃𐤉𐤒𐤉 𐤓𐤔𐤏 𐤏𐤒𐤁 𐤔𐤇𐤃 𐤉𐤎𐤉𐤓𐤅 𐤑𐤃𐤉𐤒𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤌𐤍𐤅𐤎 𐤅𐤑𐤃𐤒𐤕

מַצְדִּיקֵ֥י רָשָׁ֖ע עֵ֣קֶב שֹׁ֑חַד יָסִ֥ירוּ צַדִּיקִ֖ים מִמֶּֽנּוּ׃ס וְצִדְקַ֥ת maṣ·dî·qê rā·šā‘ ‘ê·qeḇ šō·ḥaḏ yā·sî·rū ṣad·dî·qîm mim·men·nū wə·ṣiḏ·qaṯWLC · 23

Therefore, as a tongue of fire consumes the straw, and as dry grass shrivels in the flame, so their roots will decay… and their blossoms will blow away like dust; for they have rejected the instruction of the LORD of Hosts and despised the word of the Holy One of Israel.

לָכֵן֩ לְשׁ֣וֹן אֵ֗שׁ כֶּאֱכֹ֨ל קַ֜שׁ וַחֲשַׁ֤שׁ יִרְפֶּ֔ה לֶֽהָבָה֙ שָׁרְשָׁם֙ יִֽהְיֶ֔ה כַּמָּ֣ק וּפִרְחָ֖ם יַעֲלֶ֑ה כָּאָבָ֣ק כִּ֣י מָאֲס֗וּ אֵ֚ת תּוֹרַת֙ יְהוָ֣ה צְבָא֔וֹת וְאֵ֛ת נִאֵֽצוּ׃ אִמְרַ֥ת קְדֽוֹשׁ־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל lā·ḵên lə·šō·wn ’êš ke·’ĕ·ḵōl qaš wa·ḥă·šaš yir·peh le·hā·ḇāh šā·rə·šām yih·yeh kam·māq ū·p̄ir·ḥām ya·‘ă·leh kā·’ā·ḇāq kî mā·’ă·sū ’êṯ tō·w·raṯ Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ wə·’êṯ ni·’ê·ṣū ’im·raṯ qə·ḏō·wōš- yiś·rā·’êlWLC · 24

Therefore… the anger of the LORD burns against His people; His hand is raised against them to strike them down. The mountains quake, and the corpses lie like refuse in the streets. Despite all this, His anger is not turned away; His hand is still upraised.

עַל־ כֵּ֡ן אַף־ יְהוָ֨ה חָרָה֩ בְּעַמּ֜וֹ יָד֧וֹ וַיֵּ֣ט עָלָ֣יו וַיַּכֵּ֗הוּ הֶֽהָרִ֔ים וַֽיִּרְגְּזוּ֙ נִבְלָתָ֛ם וַתְּהִ֧י כַּסּוּחָ֖ה בְּקֶ֣רֶב חוּצ֑וֹת בְּכָל־ זֹאת֙ אַפּ֔וֹ לֹא־ שָׁ֣ב יָד֥וֹ וְע֖וֹד נְטוּיָֽה׃ ‘al- kên ’ap̄- Yah·weh ḥā·rāh bə·‘am·mōw yā·ḏōw way·yêṭ ‘ā·lāw way·yak·kê·hū he·hā·rîm way·yir·gə·zū niḇ·lā·ṯām wat·tə·hî kas·sū·ḥāh bə·qe·reḇ ḥū·ṣō·wṯ bə·ḵāl zōṯ ’ap·pōw lō- šāḇ yā·ḏōw wə·‘ō·wḏ nə·ṭū·yāhWLC · 25

He lifts a banner for the distant nations and whistles for those at the ends of the earth. Behold— how speedily and swiftly they come!

וְנָֽשָׂא־ נֵ֤ס מֵרָח֔וֹק לַגּוֹיִם֙ וְשָׁ֥רַק ל֖וֹ מִקְצֵ֣ה הָאָ֑רֶץ וְהִנֵּ֥ה מְהֵרָ֖ה קַ֥ל יָבֽוֹא׃ wə·nā·śā- nês mê·rā·ḥō·wq lag·gō·w·yim wə·šā·raq lōw miq·ṣêh hā·’ā·reṣ wə·hin·nêh mə·hê·rāh qal yā·ḇō·wWLC · 26

None of them grows weary [or] stumbles; no one slumbers or sleeps. No belt… is loose and no sandal strap is broken.

אֵין־ בּ֔וֹ עָיֵ֤ף וְאֵין־ כּוֹשֵׁל֙ לֹ֥א יָנ֖וּם וְלֹ֣א יִישָׁ֑ן וְלֹ֤א אֵז֣וֹר חֲלָצָ֔יו נִפְתַּח֙ וְלֹ֥א נְעָלָֽיו׃ שְׂר֥וֹךְ נִתַּ֖ק ’ên- bōw ‘ā·yêp̄ wə·’ên- kō·wō·šêl lō yā·nūm wə·lō yî·šān wə·lō ’ê·zō·wr ḥă·lā·ṣāw nip̄·taḥ wə·lō nə·‘ā·lāw śə·rō·wḵ nit·taqWLC · 27

  • Their arrows are sharpened, and all their bows are strung. The hooves of their horses are like flint;… their chariot wheels [are] like a whirlwind.

אֲשֶׁ֤ר חִצָּיו֙ שְׁנוּנִ֔ים וְכָל־ קַשְּׁתֹתָ֖יו דְּרֻכ֑וֹת פַּרְס֤וֹת סוּסָיו֙ כַּצַּ֣ר נֶחְשָׁ֔בוּ וְגַלְגִּלָּ֖יו כַּסּוּפָֽה׃ ’ă·šer ḥiṣ·ṣāw šə·nū·nîm wə·ḵāl qaš·šə·ṯō·ṯāw də·ru·ḵō·wṯ par·sō·wṯ sū·sāw kaṣ·ṣar neḥ·šā·ḇū wə·ḡal·gil·lāw kas·sū·p̄āhWLC · 28

Their roaring is like that of a lion; they roar like young lions. They growl and seize their prey; they carry it away, and no one can rescue it.

שְׁאָגָ֥ה ל֖וֹ כַּלָּבִ֑יא וְשָׁאַג כַּכְּפִירִ֤ים וְיִנְהֹם֙ וְיֹאחֵ֣ז טֶ֔רֶף וְיַפְלִ֖יט וְאֵ֥ין מַצִּֽיל׃ šə·’ā·ḡāh lōw kal·lā·ḇî wə·šå̄·ʾaḡ kak·kə·p̄î·rîm wə·yin·hōm wə·yō·ḥêz ṭe·rep̄ wə·yap̄·lîṭ wə·’ên maṣ·ṣîlWLC · 29

In that day they will roar over it, like the roaring of the sea. If one looks over the land, he will see darkness and distress; even the light will be obscured by clouds.
