Chapter 53

The Suffering Servant

1

Who has believed our message? And to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?

𐤌𐤉 𐤄𐤀𐤌𐤉𐤍 𐤋𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤕𐤍𐤅 𐤏𐤋 𐤌𐤉 𐤅𐤆𐤓𐤅𐤏 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤍𐤂𐤋𐤕𐤄

מִ֥י הֶאֱמִ֖ין לִשְׁמֻעָתֵ֑נוּ עַל־ מִ֥י וּזְר֥וֹעַ יְהוָ֖ה נִגְלָֽתָה׃ mî he·’ĕ·mîn liš·mu·‘ā·ṯê·nū ‘al- mî ū·zə·rō·w·a‘ Yah·weh niḡ·lā·ṯāhWLC · 1

He grew up before Him like a tender shoot, and like a root out of dry ground. He had no [stately] form or majesty to attract us, no beauty that we should desire Him.

𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤋 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤅 𐤊𐤉𐤅𐤍𐤒 𐤅𐤊𐤔𐤓𐤔 𐤑𐤉𐤄 𐤌𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤋𐤀 𐤕𐤀𐤓 𐤋𐤅 𐤄𐤃𐤓 𐤅𐤍𐤓𐤀𐤄𐤅 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤌𐤓𐤀𐤄 𐤅𐤍𐤇𐤌𐤃𐤄𐤅

וַיַּ֨עַל לְפָנָ֗יו כַּיּוֹנֵ֜ק וְכַשֹּׁ֙רֶשׁ֙ צִיָּ֔ה מֵאֶ֣רֶץ לֹא־ תֹ֥אַר ל֖וֹ הָדָ֑ר וְנִרְאֵ֥הוּ וְלֹֽא־ וְלֹ֣א מַרְאֶ֖ה וְנֶחְמְדֵֽהוּ׃ way·ya·‘al lə·p̄ā·nāw kay·yō·w·nêq wə·ḵaš·šō·reš ṣî·yāh mê·’e·reṣ lō- ṯō·’ar lōw hā·ḏār wə·nir·’ê·hū wə·lō- wə·lō mar·’eh wə·neḥ·mə·ḏê·hūWLC · 2

He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, acquainted with grief. Like one from whom men hide… their faces, He was despised, and we esteemed Him not.

𐤍𐤁𐤆𐤄 𐤅𐤇𐤃𐤋 𐤀𐤉𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤌𐤊𐤀𐤁𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤃𐤅𐤏 𐤇𐤋𐤉 𐤅𐤊𐤌𐤎𐤕𐤓 𐤌𐤌𐤍𐤅 𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤍𐤁𐤆𐤄 𐤇𐤔𐤁𐤍𐤄𐤅 𐤅𐤋𐤀

נִבְזֶה֙ וַחֲדַ֣ל אִישִׁ֔ים אִ֥ישׁ מַכְאֹב֖וֹת וִיד֣וּעַ חֹ֑לִי וּכְמַסְתֵּ֤ר מִמֶּ֔נּוּ פָּנִים֙ נִבְזֶ֖ה חֲשַׁבְנֻֽהוּ׃ וְלֹ֥א niḇ·zeh wa·ḥă·ḏal ’î·šîm ’îš maḵ·’ō·ḇō·wṯ wî·ḏū·a‘ ḥō·lî ū·ḵə·mas·têr mim·men·nū pā·nîm niḇ·zeh ḥă·šaḇ·nu·hū wə·lōWLC · 3

Surely He took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows; yet we considered Him stricken, struck down by God, and afflicted.

𐤀𐤊𐤍 𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤍𐤔𐤀 𐤇𐤋𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤎𐤁𐤋𐤌 𐤅𐤌𐤊𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤅𐤀𐤍𐤇𐤍𐤅 𐤇𐤔𐤁𐤍𐤄𐤅 𐤍𐤂𐤅𐤏 𐤌𐤊𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤌𐤏𐤍𐤄

אָכֵ֤ן ה֣וּא נָשָׂ֔א חֳלָיֵ֙נוּ֙ סְבָלָ֑ם וּמַכְאֹבֵ֖ינוּ וַאֲנַ֣חְנוּ חֲשַׁבְנֻ֔הוּ נָג֛וּעַ מֻכֵּ֥ה אֱלֹהִ֖ים וּמְעֻנֶּֽה׃ ’ā·ḵên hū nā·śā ḥo·lā·yê·nū sə·ḇā·lām ū·maḵ·’ō·ḇê·nū wa·’ă·naḥ·nū ḥă·šaḇ·nu·hū nā·ḡū·a‘ muk·kêh ’ĕ·lō·hîm ū·mə·‘un·nehWLC · 4

But He was pierced for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed.

𐤅𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤌𐤇𐤋𐤋 𐤌𐤐𐤔𐤏𐤍𐤅 𐤌𐤃𐤊𐤀 𐤌𐤏𐤅𐤍𐤕𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤌𐤅𐤎𐤓 𐤔𐤋𐤅𐤌𐤍𐤅 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤁𐤇𐤁𐤓𐤕𐤅 𐤍𐤓𐤐𐤀 𐤋𐤍𐤅

וְהוּא֙ מְחֹלָ֣ל מִפְּשָׁעֵ֔נוּ מְדֻכָּ֖א מֵעֲוֺנֹתֵ֑ינוּ מוּסַ֤ר שְׁלוֹמֵ֙נוּ֙ עָלָ֔יו וּבַחֲבֻרָת֖וֹ נִרְפָּא־ לָֽנוּ׃ wə·hū mə·ḥō·lāl mip·pə·šā·‘ê·nū mə·ḏuk·kā mê·‘ă·wō·nō·ṯê·nū mū·sar šə·lō·w·mê·nū ‘ā·lāw ū·ḇa·ḥă·ḇu·rā·ṯōw nir·pā- lā·nūWLC · 5

We all like sheep have gone astray, each one has turned to his own way; and the LORD has laid upon Him the iniquity of us all.

𐤊𐤋𐤍𐤅 𐤊𐤑𐤀𐤍 𐤕𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤋𐤃𐤓𐤊𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤄𐤐𐤂𐤉𐤏 𐤁𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤏𐤅𐤍 𐤊𐤋𐤍𐤅

כֻּלָּ֙נוּ֙ כַּצֹּ֣אן תָּעִ֔ינוּ אִ֥ישׁ פָּנִ֑ינוּ לְדַרְכּ֖וֹ וַֽיהוָה֙ הִפְגִּ֣יעַ בּ֔וֹ אֵ֖ת עֲוֺ֥ן כֻּלָּֽנוּ׃ kul·lā·nū kaṣ·ṣōn tā·‘î·nū ’îš pā·nî·nū lə·ḏar·kōw Yah·weh hip̄·gî·a‘ bōw ’êṯ ‘ă·wōn kul·lā·nūWLC · 6

He was oppressed… and afflicted, yet He did not open His mouth. He was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is silent, so He did not open His mouth.

𐤍𐤂𐤔 𐤅𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤍𐤏𐤍𐤄 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤐𐤕𐤇 𐤐𐤉𐤅 𐤉𐤅𐤁𐤋 𐤊𐤔𐤄 𐤋𐤈𐤁𐤇 𐤅𐤊𐤓𐤇𐤋 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤂𐤆𐤆𐤉𐤄 𐤍𐤀𐤋𐤌𐤄 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤐𐤕𐤇 𐤐𐤉𐤅

נִגַּ֨שׂ וְה֣וּא נַעֲנֶה֮ וְלֹ֣א יִפְתַּח־ פִּיו֒ יוּבָ֔ל כַּשֶּׂה֙ לַטֶּ֣בַח וּכְרָחֵ֕ל לִפְנֵ֥י גֹזְזֶ֖יהָ נֶאֱלָ֑מָה וְלֹ֥א יִפְתַּ֖ח פִּֽיו׃ nig·gaś wə·hū na·‘ă·neh wə·lō yip̄·taḥ- pîw yū·ḇāl kaś·śeh laṭ·ṭe·ḇaḥ ū·ḵə·rā·ḥêl lip̄·nê ḡō·zə·ze·hā ne·’ĕ·lā·māh wə·lō yip̄·taḥ pîwWLC · 7

By oppression and judgment He was taken away, and who can recount His descendants? For He was cut off from the land of the living; He was stricken for the transgression of My people.

𐤌𐤏𐤑𐤓 𐤅𐤌𐤌𐤔𐤐𐤈 𐤋𐤒𐤇 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤌𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤅𐤇𐤇 𐤃𐤅𐤓𐤅 𐤊𐤉 𐤍𐤂𐤆𐤓 𐤌𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤇𐤉𐤉𐤌 𐤍𐤂𐤏 𐤌𐤐𐤔𐤏 𐤏𐤌𐤉 𐤋𐤌𐤅

מֵעֹ֤צֶר וּמִמִּשְׁפָּט֙ לֻקָּ֔ח וְאֶת־ מִ֣י יְשׂוֹחֵ֑חַ דּוֹר֖וֹ כִּ֤י נִגְזַר֙ מֵאֶ֣רֶץ חַיִּ֔ים נֶ֥גַע מִפֶּ֥שַׁע עַמִּ֖י לָֽמוֹ׃ mê·‘ō·ṣer ū·mim·miš·pāṭ luq·qāḥ wə·’eṯ- mî yə·śō·w·ḥê·aḥ dō·w·rōw kî niḡ·zar mê·’e·reṣ ḥay·yîm ne·ḡa‘ mip·pe·ša‘ ‘am·mî lā·mōwWLC · 8

A Grave Assigned

He was assigned a grave with the wicked, and with a rich man in His death, although He had done no violence, nor was any deceit in His mouth.

𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤍 𐤒𐤁𐤓𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤓𐤔𐤏𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤏𐤔𐤉𐤓 𐤁𐤌𐤕𐤉𐤅 𐤏𐤋 𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤋𐤀 𐤇𐤌𐤎 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤌𐤓𐤌𐤄 𐤁𐤐𐤉𐤅

וַיִּתֵּ֤ן קִבְר֔וֹ אֶת־ רְשָׁעִים֙ וְאֶת־ עָשִׁ֖יר בְּמֹתָ֑יו עַ֚ל עָשָׂ֔ה לֹא־ חָמָ֣ס וְלֹ֥א מִרְמָ֖ה בְּפִֽיו׃ way·yit·tên qiḇ·rōw ’eṯ- rə·šā·‘îm wə·’eṯ- ‘ā·šîr bə·mō·ṯāw ‘al ‘ā·śāh lō- ḥā·mās wə·lō mir·māh bə·p̄îwWLC · 9

Yet it was the LORD’s will to crush Him and to cause Him to suffer; and when His soul is made a guilt offering, He will see [His] offspring, He will prolong His days, and the good pleasure of the LORD will prosper in His hand.

𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤇𐤐𐤑 𐤃𐤊𐤀𐤅 𐤄𐤇𐤋𐤉 𐤀𐤌 𐤍𐤐𐤔𐤅 𐤕𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤌 𐤉𐤓𐤀𐤄 𐤆𐤓𐤏 𐤉𐤀𐤓𐤉𐤊 𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤇𐤐𐤑 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤉𐤑𐤋𐤇 𐤁𐤉𐤃𐤅

וַיהוָ֞ה חָפֵ֤ץ דַּכְּאוֹ֙ הֶֽחֱלִ֔י אִם־ נַפְשׁ֔וֹ תָּשִׂ֤ים אָשָׁם֙ יִרְאֶ֥ה זֶ֖רַע יַאֲרִ֣יךְ יָמִ֑ים וְחֵ֥פֶץ יְהוָ֖ה יִצְלָֽח׃ בְּיָד֥וֹ Yah·weh ḥā·p̄êṣ dak·kə·’ōw he·ḥĕ·lî ’im- nap̄·šōw tā·śîm ’ā·šām yir·’eh ze·ra‘ ya·’ă·rîḵ yā·mîm wə·ḥê·p̄eṣ Yah·weh yiṣ·lāḥ bə·yā·ḏōwWLC · 10

After the anguish of His soul, He will see [the light of life] and be satisfied. By His knowledge My righteous Servant will justify many, and He will bear their iniquities.

𐤌𐤏𐤌𐤋 𐤍𐤐𐤔𐤅 𐤉𐤓𐤀𐤄 𐤉𐤔𐤁𐤏 𐤁𐤃𐤏𐤕𐤅 𐤑𐤃𐤉𐤒 𐤏𐤁𐤃𐤉 𐤉𐤑𐤃𐤉𐤒 𐤋𐤓𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤉𐤎𐤁𐤋 𐤅𐤏𐤅𐤍𐤕𐤌

מֵעֲמַ֤ל נַפְשׁוֹ֙ יִרְאֶ֣ה יִשְׂבָּ֔ע בְּדַעְתּ֗וֹ צַדִּ֛יק עַבְדִּ֖י יַצְדִּ֥יק לָֽרַבִּ֑ים ה֥וּא יִסְבֹּֽל׃ וַעֲוֺנֹתָ֖ם mê·‘ă·mal nap̄·šōw yir·’eh yiś·bā‘ bə·ḏa‘·tōw ṣad·dîq ‘aḇ·dî yaṣ·dîq lā·rab·bîm hū yis·bōl wa·‘ă·wō·nō·ṯāmWLC · 11

Therefore I will allot Him a portion… with the great, and He will divide the spoils with the strong, because He has poured out His life unto death, and He was numbered with the transgressors. Yet He bore the sin of many and made intercession for the transgressors.

𐤋𐤊𐤍 𐤀𐤇𐤋𐤒 𐤋𐤅 𐤁𐤓𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤇𐤋𐤒 𐤔𐤋𐤋 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤏𐤑𐤅𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤕𐤇𐤕 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤄𐤏𐤓𐤄 𐤍𐤐𐤔𐤅 𐤋𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤍𐤌𐤍𐤄 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤐𐤔𐤏𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤍𐤔𐤀 𐤇𐤈𐤀 𐤓𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤐𐤂𐤉𐤏𐤎 𐤅𐤋𐤐𐤔𐤏𐤉𐤌

לָכֵ֞ן אֲחַלֶּק־ ל֣וֹ בָרַבִּ֗ים יְחַלֵּ֣ק שָׁלָל֒ וְאֶת־ עֲצוּמִים֮ תַּ֗חַת אֲשֶׁ֨ר הֶעֱרָ֤ה נַפְשׁ֔וֹ לַמָּ֙וֶת֙ נִמְנָ֑ה וְאֶת־ פֹּשְׁעִ֖ים וְהוּא֙ נָשָׂ֔א חֵטְא־ רַבִּ֣ים יַפְגִּֽיעַ׃ס וְלַפֹּשְׁעִ֖ים lā·ḵên ’ă·ḥal·leq- lōw ḇā·rab·bîm yə·ḥal·lêq šā·lāl wə·’eṯ- ‘ă·ṣū·mîm ta·ḥaṯ ’ă·šer he·‘ĕ·rāh nap̄·šōw lam·mā·weṯ nim·nāh wə·’eṯ- pō·šə·‘îm wə·hū nā·śā ḥêṭ- rab·bîm yap̄·gî·a‘ wə·lap·pō·šə·‘îmWLC · 12
