God’s Vengeance on the Nations
1
Who is this coming from Edom, from Bozrah with crimson-stained garments? Who is this robed in splendor, marching in the greatness of His strength? “It is I, proclaiming vindication, mighty to save.”

Why are Your clothes red, and Your garments like one who treads the winepress?

“I have trodden the winepress alone…, and no one from the nations was with Me. I trampled them in My anger and trod them down in My fury; their blood… spattered My garments, and all My clothes were stained.

דָּרַ֣כְתִּי פּוּרָ֣ה׀ לְבַדִּ֗י אֵֽין־ אִ֣ישׁ וּמֵֽעַמִּים֙ אִתִּ֔י וְאֶדְרְכֵ֣ם בְּאַפִּ֔י וְאֶרְמְסֵ֖ם בַּחֲמָתִ֑י נִצְחָם֙ עַל־ וְיֵ֤ז בְּגָדַ֔י וְכָל־ מַלְבּוּשַׁ֖י אֶגְאָֽלְתִּי׃ dā·raḵ·tî pū·rāh lə·ḇad·dî ’ên- ’îš ū·mê·‘am·mîm ’it·tî wə·’eḏ·rə·ḵêm bə·’ap·pî wə·’er·mə·sêm ba·ḥă·mā·ṯî niṣ·ḥām ‘al- wə·yêz bə·ḡā·ḏay wə·ḵāl mal·bū·šay ’eḡ·’ā·lə·tî — WLC · 3

For the day of vengeance was in My heart, and the year of My redemption had come.
𐤊𐤉 𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤍𐤒𐤌 𐤁𐤋𐤁𐤉 𐤅𐤔𐤍𐤕 𐤂𐤀𐤅𐤋𐤉 𐤁𐤀𐤄
כִּ֛י י֥וֹם נָקָ֖ם בְּלִבִּ֑י וּשְׁנַ֥ת גְּאוּלַ֖י בָּֽאָה׃ kî yō·wm nā·qām bə·lib·bî ū·šə·naṯ gə·’ū·lay bā·’āh — WLC · 4

I looked, but there was no one to help; I was appalled that no one assisted. So My arm brought Me salvation…, and My own wrath… upheld Me.

וְאַבִּיט֙ וְאֵ֣ין עֹזֵ֔ר וְאֶשְׁתּוֹמֵ֖ם וְאֵ֣ין סוֹמֵ֑ךְ זְרֹעִ֔י וַתּ֤וֹשַֽׁע לִי֙ וַחֲמָתִ֖י הִ֥יא סְמָכָֽתְנִי׃ wə·’ab·bîṭ wə·’ên ‘ō·zêr wə·’eš·tō·w·mêm wə·’ên sō·w·mêḵ zə·rō·‘î wat·tō·wō·ša‘ lî wa·ḥă·mā·ṯî hî sə·mā·ḵā·ṯə·nî — WLC · 5

I trampled the nations in My anger; in My wrath I made them drunk and poured out their blood on the ground.”

God’s Mercies Recalled

I will make known the LORD’s loving devotion and [His] praiseworthy acts, because of all that the LORD has done for us— the many good things for the house of Israel - according to His great compassion [and] loving devotion.

אַזְכִּיר֙ יְהוָ֤ה׀ חַֽסְדֵ֨י יְהוָ֔ה תְּהִלֹּ֣ת כְּעַ֕ל כֹּ֥ל אֲשֶׁר־ יְהוָ֑ה גְּמָלָ֖נוּ וְרַב־ טוּב֙ לְבֵ֣ית יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל אֲשֶׁר־ גְּמָלָ֥ם כְּֽרַחֲמָ֖יו וּכְרֹ֥ב חֲסָדָֽיו׃ ’az·kîr Yah·weh ḥas·ḏê Yah·weh tə·hil·lōṯ kə·‘al kōl ’ă·šer- Yah·weh gə·mā·lā·nū wə·raḇ- ṭūḇ lə·ḇêṯ yiś·rā·’êl ’ă·šer- gə·mā·lām kə·ra·ḥă·māw ū·ḵə·rōḇ ḥă·sā·ḏāw — WLC · 7

For He said, “They are surely My people, sons who will not be disloyal.” So He became their Savior.

וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ הֵ֔מָּה אַךְ־ עַמִּ֣י בָּנִ֖ים לֹ֣א יְשַׁקֵּ֑רוּ וַיְהִ֥י לָהֶ֖ם לְמוֹשִֽׁיעַ׃ way·yō·mer hêm·māh ’aḵ- ‘am·mî bā·nîm lō yə·šaq·qê·rū way·hî lā·hem lə·mō·wō·šî·a‘ — WLC · 8

In all their distress,… He too was afflicted, and the Angel of His Presence saved them. In His love and compassion He redeemed them; He lifted them up and carried them all the days of old.

בְּֽכָל־ צָרָתָ֣ם׀ לֹא צָ֗ר וּמַלְאַ֤ךְ פָּנָיו֙ הֽוֹשִׁיעָ֔ם בְּאַהֲבָת֥וֹ וּבְחֶמְלָת֖וֹ ה֣וּא גְאָלָ֑ם וַֽיְנַטְּלֵ֥ם וַֽיְנַשְּׂאֵ֖ם כָּל־ יְמֵ֥י עוֹלָֽם׃ bə·ḵāl ṣā·rā·ṯām lō ṣār ū·mal·’aḵ pā·nāw hō·wō·šî·‘ām bə·’a·hă·ḇā·ṯōw ū·ḇə·ḥem·lā·ṯōw hū ḡə·’ā·lām way·naṭ·ṭə·lêm way·naś·śə·’êm kāl- yə·mê ‘ō·w·lām — WLC · 9

But they rebelled and grieved His Holy Spirit. So He turned [and became] their enemy, [and] He Himself fought against them.

וְהֵ֛מָּה מָר֥וּ וְעִצְּב֖וּ אֶת־ קָדְשׁ֑וֹ ר֣וּחַ וַיֵּהָפֵ֥ךְ לָהֶ֛ם לְאוֹיֵ֖ב ה֥וּא נִלְחַם־ בָּֽם׃ wə·hêm·māh mā·rū wə·‘iṣ·ṣə·ḇū ’eṯ- qā·ḏə·šōw rū·aḥ way·yê·hā·p̄êḵ lā·hem lə·’ō·w·yêḇ hū nil·ḥam- bām — WLC · 10

Then His people remembered the days of old, the days of Moses. Where is He who brought them through the sea with the shepherds of His flock? Where is the One who set His Holy Spirit among them,

עַמּ֑וֹ וַיִּזְכֹּ֥ר יְמֵֽי־ עוֹלָ֖ם מֹשֶׁ֣ה אַיֵּ֣ה׀ הַֽמַּעֲלֵ֣ם מִיָּ֗ם אֵ֚ת רֹעֵ֣י צֹאנ֔וֹ אַיֵּ֛ה הַשָּׂ֥ם קָדְשֽׁוֹ׃ ר֥וּחַ בְּקִרְבּ֖וֹ אֶת־ ‘am·mōw way·yiz·kōr yə·mê- ‘ō·w·lām mō·šeh ’ay·yêh ham·ma·‘ă·lêm mî·yām ’êṯ rō·‘ê ṣō·nōw ’ay·yêh haś·śām qā·ḏə·šōw rū·aḥ bə·qir·bōw ’eṯ- — WLC · 11

who sent His glorious arm [to lead them] by the right hand of Moses, who divided the waters before them to gain for Himself everlasting renown,

מוֹלִיךְ֙ תִּפְאַרְתּ֑וֹ זְר֖וֹעַ לִימִ֣ין מֹשֶׁ֔ה בּ֤וֹקֵֽעַ מַ֙יִם֙ מִפְּנֵיהֶ֔ם לַעֲשׂ֥וֹת ל֖וֹ עוֹלָֽם׃ שֵׁ֥ם mō·w·lîḵ tip̄·’ar·tōw zə·rō·w·a‘ lî·mîn mō·šeh bō·w·qê·a‘ ma·yim mip·pə·nê·hem la·‘ă·śō·wṯ lōw ‘ō·w·lām šêm — WLC · 12

who led them through the depths like a horse in the wilderness, so that they did not stumble?

מוֹלִיכָ֖ם בַּתְּהֹמ֑וֹת כַּסּ֥וּס בַּמִּדְבָּ֖ר לֹ֥א יִכָּשֵֽׁלוּ׃ mō·w·lî·ḵām bat·tə·hō·mō·wṯ kas·sūs bam·miḏ·bār lō yik·kā·šê·lū — WLC · 13

Like cattle going down to the valley, the Spirit of the LORD gave them rest. You led Your people this way to make for Yourself a glorious name.

A Prayer for Mercy

Look down from heaven and see, from Your holy and glorious habitation. Where are Your zeal and might? Your yearning… and compassion for me are restrained.

Yet You are our Father, though Abraham does not know us and Israel does not acknowledge us. You, O LORD, are our Father; our Redeemer from Everlasting is Your name.

כִּֽי־ אַתָּ֣ה אָבִ֔ינוּ כִּ֤י אַבְרָהָם֙ לֹ֣א יְדָעָ֔נוּ וְיִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל לֹ֣א יַכִּירָ֑נוּ אַתָּ֤ה יְהוָה֙ אָבִ֔ינוּ גֹּאֲלֵ֥נוּ מֵֽעוֹלָ֖ם שְׁמֶֽךָ׃ kî- ’at·tāh ’ā·ḇî·nū kî ’aḇ·rā·hām lō yə·ḏā·‘ā·nū wə·yiś·rā·’êl lō yak·kî·rā·nū ’at·tāh Yah·weh ’ā·ḇî·nū gō·’ă·lê·nū mê·‘ō·w·lām šə·me·ḵā — WLC · 16

Why, O LORD, do You make us stray from Your ways [and] harden our hearts from fearing You? Return, for the sake of Your servants, the tribes of Your heritage.

לָ֣מָּה יְהוָה֙ תַתְעֵ֤נוּ מִדְּרָכֶ֔יךָ תַּקְשִׁ֥יחַ לִבֵּ֖נוּ מִיִּרְאָתֶ֑ךָ שׁ֚וּב לְמַ֣עַן עֲבָדֶ֔יךָ שִׁבְטֵ֖י נַחֲלָתֶֽךָ׃ lām·māh Yah·weh ṯaṯ·‘ê·nū mid·də·rā·ḵe·ḵā taq·šî·aḥ lib·bê·nū mî·yir·’ā·ṯe·ḵā šûb̲ lə·ma·‘an ‘ă·ḇā·ḏe·ḵā šiḇ·ṭê na·ḥă·lā·ṯe·ḵā — WLC · 17

For a short while Your people possessed Your holy place, but our enemies have trampled Your sanctuary.

We have become like those You never… ruled like those not called by Your name…
