Then the LORD said to me, “Take a large scroll and write on it with an ordinary stylus: Maher-shalal-hash-baz…
𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤒𐤇 𐤋𐤊 𐤂𐤃𐤅𐤋 𐤂𐤋𐤉𐤅𐤍 𐤅𐤊𐤕𐤁 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤀𐤍𐤅𐤔 𐤁𐤇𐤓𐤈 𐤋𐤌𐤄𐤓 𐤔𐤋𐤋 𐤇𐤔 𐤁𐤆
יְהוָה֙ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֵלַ֔י קַח־ לְךָ֖ גָּד֑וֹל גִּלָּי֣וֹן וּכְתֹ֤ב עָלָיו֙ אֱנ֔וֹשׁ בְּחֶ֣רֶט לְמַהֵ֥ר שָׁלָ֖ל חָ֥שׁ בַּֽז׃ Yah·weh way·yō·mer ’ê·lay qaḥ- lə·ḵā gā·ḏō·wl gil·lā·yō·wn ū·ḵə·ṯōḇ ‘ā·lāw ’ĕ·nō·wōš bə·ḥe·reṭ lə·ma·hêr šā·lāl ḥāš baz — WLC · 1

And I will appoint for Myself trustworthy witnesses— Uriah the priest and Zechariah son of Jeberekiah.”

And I had relations with the prophetess, and she conceived and gave birth to a son. The LORD said to me, “Name him Maher-shalal-hash-baz…

וָאֶקְרַב֙ אֶל־ הַנְּבִיאָ֔ה וַתַּ֖הַר וַתֵּ֣לֶד בֵּ֑ן יְהוָה֙ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֵלַ֔י קְרָ֣א שְׁמ֔וֹ מַהֵ֥ר שָׁלָ֖ל חָ֥שׁ בַּֽז׃ wā·’eq·raḇ ’el- han·nə·ḇî·’āh wat·ta·har wat·tê·leḏ bên Yah·weh way·yō·mer ’ê·lay qə·rā šə·mōw ma·hêr šā·lāl ḥāš baz — WLC · 3

For before the boy knows how to cry ‘Father’ or ‘Mother,’ the wealth of Damascus and the plunder of Samaria will be carried off by the king of Assyria.”
𐤊𐤉 𐤁𐤈𐤓𐤌 𐤄𐤍𐤏𐤓 𐤉𐤃𐤏 𐤒𐤓𐤀 𐤀𐤁𐤉 𐤅𐤀𐤌𐤉 𐤇𐤉𐤋 𐤃𐤌𐤔𐤒 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤔𐤋𐤋 𐤔𐤌𐤓𐤅𐤍 𐤉𐤔𐤀 𐤀𐤕 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤀𐤔𐤅𐤓𐤎
כִּ֗י בְּטֶ֙רֶם֙ הַנַּ֔עַר יֵדַ֣ע קְרֹ֖א אָבִ֣י וְאִמִּ֑י חֵ֣יל דַּמֶּ֗שֶׂק וְאֵת֙ שְׁלַ֣ל שֹׁמְר֔וֹן יִשָּׂ֣א׀ אֶת־ לִפְנֵ֖י מֶ֥לֶךְ אַשּֽׁוּר׃ס kî bə·ṭe·rem han·na·‘ar yê·ḏa‘ qə·rō ’ā·ḇî wə·’im·mî ḥêl dam·me·śeq wə·’êṯ šə·lal šō·mə·rō·wn yiś·śā ’eṯ- lip̄·nê me·leḵ ’aš·šūr — WLC · 4

And the LORD spoke to me further…:
𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤅𐤉𐤎𐤐 𐤏𐤅𐤃 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓
יְהוָ֔ה דַּבֵּ֥ר אֵלַ֛י וַיֹּ֣סֶף ע֖וֹד לֵאמֹֽר׃ Yah·weh dab·bêr ’ê·lay way·yō·sep̄ ‘ō·wḏ lê·mōr — WLC · 5

“Because… this people has rejected the gently flowing waters of Shiloah and rejoiced in Rezin and the son of Remaliah,
𐤉𐤏𐤍 𐤊𐤉 𐤄𐤆𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤌𐤀𐤎 𐤋𐤀𐤈 𐤄𐤄𐤋𐤊𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤉 𐤄𐤔𐤋𐤇 𐤅𐤌𐤔𐤅𐤔 𐤀𐤕 𐤓𐤑𐤉𐤍 𐤅𐤁𐤍 𐤓𐤌𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤅
יַ֗עַן כִּ֤י הַזֶּ֔ה אֵ֚ת הָעָ֣ם מָאַס֙ לְאַ֑ט הַהֹלְכִ֖ים מֵ֣י הַשִּׁלֹ֔חַ וּמְשׂ֥וֹשׂ אֶת־ רְצִ֖ין וּבֶן־ רְמַלְיָֽהוּ׃ ya·‘an kî haz·zeh ’êṯ hā·‘ām mā·’as lə·’aṭ ha·hō·lə·ḵîm mê haš·ši·lō·aḥ ū·mə·śō·wś ’eṯ- rə·ṣîn ū·ḇen- rə·mal·yā·hū — WLC · 6

- the Lord will surely bring against them the mighty vvv vvv floodwaters of the Euphrates the king of Assyria and all his pomp. It will overflow… its channels and overrun… its banks.

וְלָכֵ֡ן אֲדֹנָי֩ הִנֵּ֣ה מַעֲלֶ֨ה עֲלֵיהֶ֜ם אֶת־ הָעֲצוּמִים֙ וְהָ֣רַבִּ֔ים אֶת־ מֵ֣י הַנָּהָ֗ר מֶ֥לֶךְ אַשּׁ֖וּר וְאֶת־ כָּל־ כְּבוֹד֑וֹ וְעָלָה֙ עַל־ כָּל־ אֲפִיקָ֔יו וְהָלַ֖ךְ עַל־ כָּל־ גְּדוֹתָֽיו׃ wə·lā·ḵên ’ă·ḏō·nāy hin·nêh ma·‘ă·leh ‘ă·lê·hem ’eṯ- hā·‘ă·ṣū·mîm wə·hā·rab·bîm ’eṯ- mê han·nā·hār me·leḵ ’aš·šūr wə·’eṯ- kāl- kə·ḇō·w·ḏōw wə·‘ā·lāh ‘al- kāl- ’ă·p̄î·qāw wə·hā·laḵ ‘al- kāl- gə·ḏō·w·ṯāw — WLC · 7

It will pour into Judah, swirling and sweeping over it, reaching… up to the neck; its spreading streams… will cover your entire land, vvv O Immanuel!

וְחָלַ֤ף בִּֽיהוּדָה֙ שָׁטַ֣ף וְעָבַ֔ר יַגִּ֑יעַ וְהָיָה֙ עַד־ צַוָּ֖אר מֻטּ֣וֹת כְּנָפָ֔יו מְלֹ֥א רֹֽחַב־ אַרְצְךָ֖ עִמָּ֥נוּ אֵֽל׃ס wə·ḥā·lap̄ bî·hū·ḏāh šā·ṭap̄ wə·‘ā·ḇar yag·gî·a‘ wə·hā·yāh ‘aḏ- ṣaw·wār muṭ·ṭō·wṯ kə·nā·p̄āw mə·lō rō·ḥaḇ- ’ar·ṣə·ḵā ‘im·mā·nū ’êl — WLC · 8

Huddle together, O peoples, and be shattered; pay attention, all you distant lands; prepare for battle, and be shattered; prepare for battle, and be shattered!

רֹ֤עוּ עַמִּים֙ וָחֹ֔תּוּ וְהַֽאֲזִ֔ינוּ כֹּ֖ל מֶרְחַקֵּי־ אָ֑רֶץ הִתְאַזְּר֣וּ וָחֹ֔תּוּ הִֽתְאַזְּר֖וּ וָחֹֽתּוּ׃ rō·‘ū ‘am·mîm wā·ḥōt·tū wə·ha·’ă·zî·nū kōl mer·ḥaq·qê- ’ā·reṣ hiṯ·’az·zə·rū wā·ḥōt·tū hiṯ·’az·zə·rū wā·ḥōt·tū — WLC · 9

Devise a plan, but it will be thwarted; state a proposal, but it will not happen. For God is with us.

עֻ֥צוּ עֵצָ֖ה וְתֻפָ֑ר דַּבְּר֤וּ דָבָר֙ וְלֹ֣א יָק֔וּם כִּ֥י אֵֽל׃ס עִמָּ֖נוּ ‘u·ṣū ‘ê·ṣāh wə·ṯu·p̄ār dab·bə·rū ḏā·ḇār wə·lō yā·qūm kî ’êl ‘im·mā·nū — WLC · 10
A Call to Fear God

For this is what the LORD has spoken to me with a strong hand, instructing me not to walk in the way of this… people:
𐤊𐤉 𐤊𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤊𐤇𐤆𐤒𐤕 𐤄𐤉𐤃 𐤅𐤉𐤎𐤓𐤍𐤉 𐤌𐤋𐤊𐤕 𐤁𐤃𐤓𐤊 𐤄𐤆𐤄 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤄𐤏𐤌
כִּי֩ כֹ֨ה יְהוָ֛ה אָמַ֧ר אֵלַ֖י כְּחֶזְקַ֣ת הַיָּ֑ד וְיִסְּרֵ֕נִי מִלֶּ֛כֶת בְּדֶ֥רֶךְ הַזֶּ֖ה לֵאמֹֽר׃ הָֽעָם־ kî ḵōh Yah·weh ’ā·mar ’ê·lay kə·ḥez·qaṯ hay·yāḏ wə·yis·sə·rê·nî mil·le·ḵeṯ bə·ḏe·reḵ haz·zeh lê·mōr hā·‘ām- — WLC · 11

“Do not call conspiracy everything these people regard as conspiracy. Do not fear what they fear; do not live in dread.

לֹא־ תֹאמְר֣וּן קֶ֔שֶׁר לְכֹ֧ל אֲשֶׁר־ הַזֶּ֖ה הָעָ֥ם יֹאמַ֛ר קָ֑שֶׁר וְאֶת־ לֹֽא־ תִֽירְא֖וּ מוֹרָא֥וֹ וְלֹ֥א תַעֲרִֽיצוּ׃ lō- ṯō·mə·rūn qe·šer lə·ḵōl ’ă·šer- haz·zeh hā·‘ām yō·mar qā·šer wə·’eṯ- lō- ṯî·rə·’ū mō·w·rā·’ōw wə·lō ṯa·‘ă·rî·ṣū — WLC · 12

- The LORD of Hosts is the One you shall regard as holy. Only He should be feared; only He should be dreaded.

אֶת־ יְהוָ֥ה צְבָא֖וֹת אֹת֣וֹ תַקְדִּ֑ישׁוּ וְה֥וּא מוֹרַאֲכֶ֖ם וְה֥וּא מַֽעֲרִֽצְכֶֽם׃ ’eṯ- Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ ’ō·ṯōw ṯaq·dî·šū wə·hū mō·w·ra·’ă·ḵem wə·hū ma·‘ă·riṣ·ḵem — WLC · 13

And He will be a sanctuary— but to both houses of Israel a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense, to the dwellers of Jerusalem a trap and a snare.

וְהָיָ֖ה לְמִקְדָּ֑שׁ לִשְׁנֵ֨י בָתֵּ֤י יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ וּלְאֶ֣בֶן נֶ֠גֶף וּלְצ֨וּר מִכְשׁ֜וֹל לְיוֹשֵׁ֖ב יְרוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ לְפַ֣ח וּלְמוֹקֵ֔שׁ wə·hā·yāh lə·miq·dāš liš·nê ḇāt·tê yiś·rā·’êl ū·lə·’e·ḇen ne·ḡep̄ ū·lə·ṣūr miḵ·šō·wl lə·yō·wō·šêḇ yə·rū·šā·lim lə·p̄aḥ ū·lə·mō·w·qêš — WLC · 14

Many will stumble over these; they will fall and be broken; they will be ensnared and captured.”

רַבִּ֑ים וְכָ֥שְׁלוּ בָ֖ם וְנָפְל֣וּ וְנִשְׁבָּ֔רוּ וְנוֹקְשׁ֖וּ וְנִלְכָּֽדוּ׃ס rab·bîm wə·ḵā·šə·lū ḇām wə·nā·p̄ə·lū wə·niš·bā·rū wə·nō·wq·šū wə·nil·kā·ḏū — WLC · 15

Bind up the testimony [and] seal the law among my disciples.

צ֖וֹר תְּעוּדָ֑ה חֲת֥וֹם תּוֹרָ֖ה בְּלִמֻּדָֽי׃ ṣō·wr tə·‘ū·ḏāh ḥă·ṯō·wm tō·w·rāh bə·lim·mu·ḏāy — WLC · 16

I will wait for the LORD, who is hiding His face from the house of Jacob. I will put my trust in Him.

וְחִכִּ֙יתִי֙ לַיהוָ֔ה הַמַּסְתִּ֥יר פָּנָ֖יו מִבֵּ֣ית יַעֲקֹ֑ב וְקִוֵּ֖יתִֽי־ לֽוֹ׃ wə·ḥik·kî·ṯî Yah·weh ham·mas·tîr pā·nāw mib·bêṯ ya·‘ă·qōḇ wə·qiw·wê·ṯî- lōw — WLC · 17

Here am I, and the children the LORD has given me as signs and symbols in Israel from the LORD of Hosts, who dwells on Mount Zion.

הִנֵּ֣ה אָנֹכִ֗י וְהַיְלָדִים֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר יְהוָ֔ה נָֽתַן־ לִ֣י לְאֹת֥וֹת וּלְמוֹפְתִ֖ים בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל מֵעִם֙ יְהוָ֣ה צְבָא֔וֹת הַשֹּׁכֵ֖ן בְּהַ֥ר צִיּֽוֹן׃ס hin·nêh ’ā·nō·ḵî wə·hay·lā·ḏîm ’ă·šer Yah·weh nā·ṯan- lî lə·’ō·ṯō·wṯ ū·lə·mō·wp̄·ṯîm bə·yiś·rā·’êl mê·‘im Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ haš·šō·ḵên bə·har ṣî·yō·wn — WLC · 18
Darkness and Light

When men tell you to consult… mediums… and spiritists who whisper and mutter, shouldn’t a people… consult their God [instead]? Why consult the dead on behalf of the living?…

וְכִֽי־ יֹאמְר֣וּ אֲלֵיכֶ֗ם דִּרְשׁ֤וּ אֶל־ הָאֹבוֹת֙ וְאֶל־ הַיִּדְּעֹנִ֔ים הַֽמְצַפְצְפִ֖ים וְהַמַּהְגִּ֑ים הֲלוֹא־ עַם֙ אֶל־ יִדְרֹ֔שׁ אֱלֹהָ֣יו הַמֵּתִֽים׃ בְּעַ֥ד הַחַיִּ֖ים אֶל־ wə·ḵî- yō·mə·rū ’ă·lê·ḵem dir·šū ’el- hā·’ō·ḇō·wṯ wə·’el- hay·yid·də·‘ō·nîm ham·ṣap̄·ṣə·p̄îm wə·ham·mah·gîm hă·lō·w- ‘am ’el- yiḏ·rōš ’ĕ·lō·hāw ham·mê·ṯîm bə·‘aḏ ha·ḥay·yîm ’el- — WLC · 19

To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, they have no light of dawn.

They will roam the land dejected and hungry… When they are famished, they will become enraged; and looking upward, they will curse their king and their God.

Then they will look to the earth and see only distress and darkness and the gloom of anguish. And they will be driven into utter darkness.
