Chapter 9

Unto Us a Child Is Born

1

Nevertheless, there will be no more gloom for those in distress In the past… He humbled the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the future He will honor the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations:

𐤊𐤉 𐤋𐤀 𐤌𐤅𐤏𐤐 𐤋𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤌𐤅𐤑𐤒 𐤋𐤄 𐤄𐤓𐤀𐤔𐤅𐤍 𐤊𐤏𐤕 𐤄𐤒𐤋 𐤀𐤓𐤑𐤄 𐤆𐤁𐤋𐤅𐤍 𐤅𐤀𐤓𐤑𐤄 𐤍𐤐𐤕𐤋𐤉 𐤅𐤄𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤅𐤍 𐤄𐤊𐤁𐤉𐤃 𐤃𐤓𐤊 𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤁𐤓 𐤄𐤉𐤓𐤃𐤍 𐤂𐤋𐤉𐤋 𐤄𐤂𐤅𐤉𐤌

כִּ֣י לֹ֣א מוּעָף֮ לַאֲשֶׁ֣ר מוּצָ֣ק לָהּ֒ הָרִאשׁ֗וֹן כָּעֵ֣ת הֵקַ֞ל אַ֤רְצָה זְבֻלוּן֙ וְאַ֣רְצָה נַפְתָּלִ֔י וְהָאַחֲר֖וֹן הִכְבִּ֑יד דֶּ֤רֶךְ הַיָּם֙ עֵ֣בֶר הַיַּרְדֵּ֔ן גְּלִ֖יל הַגּוֹיִֽם׃ kî lō mū·‘āp̄ la·’ă·šer mū·ṣāq lāh hā·ri·šō·wn kā·‘êṯ hê·qal ’ar·ṣāh zə·ḇu·lūn wə·’ar·ṣāh nap̄·tā·lî wə·hā·’a·ḥă·rō·wn hiḵ·bîḏ de·reḵ hay·yām ‘ê·ḇer hay·yar·dên gə·lîl hag·gō·w·yimWLC · 1

The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death, a light has dawned.

𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤄𐤄𐤋𐤊𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤇𐤔𐤊 𐤓𐤀𐤅 𐤂𐤃𐤅𐤋 𐤀𐤅𐤓 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤉𐤔𐤁𐤉 𐤁𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤑𐤋𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤅𐤓 𐤍𐤂𐤄

הָעָם֙ הַהֹלְכִ֣ים בַּחֹ֔שֶׁךְ רָא֖וּ גָּד֑וֹל א֣וֹר עֲלֵיהֶֽם׃ יֹשְׁבֵי֙ בְּאֶ֣רֶץ צַלְמָ֔וֶת א֖וֹר נָגַ֥הּ hā·‘ām ha·hō·lə·ḵîm ba·ḥō·šeḵ rā·’ū gā·ḏō·wl ’ō·wr ‘ă·lê·hem yō·šə·ḇê bə·’e·reṣ ṣal·mā·weṯ ’ō·wr nā·ḡahWLC · 2

You have enlarged the nation… and increased its joy. The people rejoice before You as they rejoice at harvest time, as [men] rejoice in dividing the plunder.

𐤄𐤓𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤄𐤂𐤅𐤉 𐤋𐤀 𐤄𐤂𐤃𐤋𐤕 𐤄𐤔𐤌𐤇𐤄 𐤔𐤌𐤇𐤅 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤊 𐤊𐤔𐤌𐤇𐤕 𐤁𐤒𐤑𐤉𐤓 𐤊𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤉𐤂𐤉𐤋𐤅 𐤁𐤇𐤋𐤒𐤌 𐤔𐤋𐤋

הִרְבִּ֣יתָ הַגּ֔וֹי לֹא הִגְדַּ֣לְתָּ הַשִּׂמְחָ֑ה שָׂמְח֤וּ לְפָנֶ֙יךָ֙ כְּשִׂמְחַ֣ת בַּקָּצִ֔יר כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר יָגִ֖ילוּ בְּחַלְּקָ֥ם שָׁלָֽל׃ hir·bî·ṯā hag·gō·w lō hiḡ·dal·tā haś·śim·ḥāh śā·mə·ḥū lə·p̄ā·ne·ḵā kə·śim·ḥaṯ baq·qā·ṣîr ka·’ă·šer yā·ḡî·lū bə·ḥal·lə·qām šā·lālWLC · 3

For as in the day of Midian You have shattered the yoke of their burden, the bar [across] their shoulders, and the rod of their oppressor…

𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤕 𐤊𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤌𐤃𐤉𐤍 𐤄𐤇𐤕𐤕 𐤏𐤋 𐤎𐤁𐤋𐤅 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤌𐤈𐤄 𐤔𐤊𐤌𐤅 𐤔𐤁𐤈 𐤄𐤍𐤂𐤔 𐤁𐤅

כִּ֣י׀ אֶת־ כְּי֥וֹם מִדְיָֽן׃ הַחִתֹּ֖תָ עֹ֣ל סֻבֳּל֗וֹ וְאֵת֙ מַטֵּ֣ה שִׁכְמ֔וֹ שֵׁ֖בֶט הַנֹּגֵ֣שׂ בּ֑וֹ kî ’eṯ- kə·yō·wm miḏ·yān ha·ḥit·tō·ṯā ‘ōl sub·bo·lōw wə·’êṯ maṭ·ṭêh šiḵ·mōw šê·ḇeṭ han·nō·ḡêś bōwWLC · 4

For every trampling boot of battle and [every] garment rolled in blood will be burned as fuel for the fire.

𐤊𐤉 𐤊𐤋 𐤎𐤀𐤍 𐤎𐤀𐤅𐤍 𐤁𐤓𐤏𐤔 𐤅𐤔𐤌𐤋𐤄 𐤌𐤂𐤅𐤋𐤋𐤄 𐤁𐤃𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤕𐤄 𐤋𐤔𐤓𐤐𐤄 𐤌𐤀𐤊𐤋𐤕 𐤀𐤔

כִּ֤י כָל־ סֹאֵ֣ן סְאוֹן֙ בְּרַ֔עַשׁ וְשִׂמְלָ֖ה מְגוֹלָלָ֣ה בְדָמִ֑ים וְהָיְתָ֥ה לִשְׂרֵפָ֖ה מַאֲכֹ֥לֶת אֵֽשׁ׃ kî ḵāl sō·’ên sə·’ō·wn bə·ra·‘aš wə·śim·lāh mə·ḡō·w·lā·lāh ḇə·ḏā·mîm wə·hā·yə·ṯāh liś·rê·p̄āh ma·’ă·ḵō·leṯ ’êšWLC · 5

For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given, and the government will be upon His shoulders. And He will be called… Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

𐤊𐤉 𐤋𐤍𐤅 𐤉𐤋𐤃 𐤉𐤋𐤃 𐤋𐤍𐤅 𐤁𐤍 𐤍𐤕𐤍 𐤄𐤌𐤔𐤓𐤄 𐤅𐤕𐤄𐤉 𐤏𐤋 𐤔𐤊𐤌𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤓𐤀 𐤔𐤌𐤅 𐤐𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤅𐤏𐤑 𐤂𐤁𐤅𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤏𐤃 𐤔𐤓 𐤔𐤋𐤅𐤌

כִּי־ לָ֗נוּ יֶ֣לֶד יֻלַּד־ לָ֔נוּ בֵּ֚ן נִתַּן־ הַמִּשְׂרָ֖ה וַתְּהִ֥י עַל־ שִׁכְמ֑וֹ וַיִּקְרָ֨א שְׁמ֜וֹ פֶּ֠לֶא יוֹעֵץ֙ גִּבּ֔וֹר אֵ֣ל אֲבִיעַ֖ד שַׂר־ שָׁלֽוֹם׃ kî- lā·nū ye·leḏ yul·laḏ- lā·nū bên nit·tan- ham·miś·rāh wat·tə·hî ‘al- šiḵ·mōw way·yiq·rā šə·mōw pe·le yō·w·‘êṣ gib·bō·wr ’êl ’ă·ḇî·‘aḏ śar- šā·lō·wmWLC · 6

Of the increase of [His] government and peace [there will be] no end. He will reign on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish and sustain it with justice and righteousness from that time and forevermore… The zeal of the LORD of Hosts will accomplish this.

𐤋𐤌𐤓𐤁𐤄 𐤄𐤌𐤔𐤓𐤄 𐤅𐤋𐤔𐤋𐤅𐤌 𐤀𐤉𐤍 𐤒𐤑 𐤏𐤋 𐤊𐤎𐤀 𐤃𐤅𐤃 𐤅𐤏𐤋 𐤌𐤌𐤋𐤊𐤕𐤅 𐤋𐤄𐤊𐤉𐤍 𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤅𐤋𐤎𐤏𐤃𐤄 𐤁𐤌𐤔𐤐𐤈 𐤅𐤁𐤑𐤃𐤒𐤄 𐤌𐤏𐤕𐤄 𐤅𐤏𐤃 𐤏𐤅𐤋𐤌 𐤒𐤍𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤑𐤁𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤕𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤆𐤀𐤕𐤎

לְםַרְבֵּה הַמִּשְׂרָ֜ה וּלְשָׁל֣וֹם אֵֽין־ קֵ֗ץ עַל־ כִּסֵּ֤א דָוִד֙ וְעַל־ מַמְלַכְתּ֔וֹ לְהָכִ֤ין אֹתָהּ֙ וּֽלְסַעֲדָ֔הּ בְּמִשְׁפָּ֖ט וּבִצְדָקָ֑ה מֵעַתָּה֙ וְעַד־ עוֹלָ֔ם קִנְאַ֛ת יְהוָ֥ה צְבָא֖וֹת תַּעֲשֶׂה־ זֹּֽאת׃ס lə·mar·bēh ham·miś·rāh ū·lə·šā·lō·wm ’ên- qêṣ ‘al- kis·sê ḏā·wiḏ wə·‘al- mam·laḵ·tōw lə·hā·ḵîn ’ō·ṯāh ū·lə·sa·‘ă·ḏāh bə·miš·pāṭ ū·ḇiṣ·ḏā·qāh mê·‘at·tāh wə·‘aḏ- ‘ō·w·lām qin·’aṯ Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ ta·‘ă·śeh- zōṯWLC · 7

Judgment against Israel’s Pride

The Lord has sent a message against Jacob, and it has fallen upon Israel.

𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤔𐤋𐤇 𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤁𐤉𐤏𐤒𐤁 𐤅𐤍𐤐𐤋 𐤁𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋

אֲדֹנָ֖י שָׁלַ֥ח דָּבָ֛ר בְּיַעֲקֹ֑ב וְנָפַ֖ל בְּיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ ’ă·ḏō·nāy šā·laḥ dā·ḇār bə·ya·‘ă·qōḇ wə·nā·p̄al bə·yiś·rā·’êlWLC · 8

All the people will know it— Ephraim and the dwellers of Samaria. With pride and arrogance of heart they will say:

𐤊𐤋𐤅 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤃𐤏𐤅 𐤀𐤐𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤅𐤔𐤁 𐤔𐤌𐤓𐤅𐤍 𐤁𐤂𐤀𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤁𐤂𐤃𐤋 𐤋𐤁𐤁 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓

כֻּלּ֔וֹ הָעָ֣ם וְיָדְעוּ֙ אֶפְרַ֖יִם וְיוֹשֵׁ֣ב שֹׁמְר֑וֹן בְּגַאֲוָ֛ה וּבְגֹ֥דֶל לֵבָ֖ב לֵאמֹֽר׃ kul·lōw hā·‘ām wə·yā·ḏə·‘ū ’ep̄·ra·yim wə·yō·wō·šêḇ šō·mə·rō·wn bə·ḡa·’ă·wāh ū·ḇə·ḡō·ḏel lê·ḇāḇ lê·mōrWLC · 9

“The bricks have fallen, but we will rebuild with finished stone; the sycamores have been felled, but we will replace them with cedars.”

𐤋𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤍𐤐𐤋𐤅 𐤍𐤁𐤍𐤄 𐤅𐤂𐤆𐤉𐤕 𐤔𐤒𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤂𐤃𐤏𐤅 𐤍𐤇𐤋𐤉𐤐 𐤅𐤀𐤓𐤆𐤉𐤌

לְבֵנִ֥ים נָפָ֖לוּ נִבְנֶ֑ה וְגָזִ֣ית שִׁקְמִ֣ים גֻּדָּ֔עוּ נַחֲלִֽיף׃ וַאֲרָזִ֖ים lə·ḇê·nîm nā·p̄ā·lū niḇ·neh wə·ḡā·zîṯ šiq·mîm gud·dā·‘ū na·ḥă·lîp̄ wa·’ă·rā·zîmWLC · 10

The LORD has raised up the foes of Rezin against him and joined his enemies {together}.

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤂𐤁 𐤑𐤓𐤉 𐤓𐤑𐤉𐤍 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤎𐤊𐤎𐤊 𐤀𐤉𐤁𐤉𐤅

יְהוָ֛ה אֶת־ וַיְשַׂגֵּ֧ב צָרֵ֥י רְצִ֖ין עָלָ֑יו וְאֶת־ יְסַכְסֵֽךְ׃ אֹיְבָ֖יו Yah·weh ’eṯ- way·śag·gêḇ ṣā·rê rə·ṣîn ‘ā·lāw wə·’eṯ- yə·saḵ·sêḵ ’ō·yə·ḇāwWLC · 11

Aram from the east and Philistia from the west have devoured Israel with open mouths. Despite all this, His anger is not turned away; His hand is still upraised.

𐤀𐤓𐤌 𐤌𐤒𐤃𐤌 𐤅𐤐𐤋𐤔𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤀𐤇𐤅𐤓 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤊𐤋𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤁𐤊𐤋 𐤐𐤄 𐤁𐤊𐤋 𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤐𐤅 𐤋𐤀 𐤔𐤁 𐤉𐤃𐤅 𐤅𐤏𐤅𐤃 𐤍𐤈𐤅𐤉𐤄

אֲרָ֣ם מִקֶּ֗דֶם וּפְלִשְׁתִּים֙ מֵֽאָח֔וֹר וַיֹּאכְל֥וּ אֶת־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל בְּכָל־ פֶּ֑ה בְּכָל־ זֹאת֙ אַפּ֔וֹ לֹא־ שָׁ֣ב יָד֥וֹ וְע֖וֹד נְטוּיָֽה׃ ’ă·rām miq·qe·ḏem ū·p̄ə·liš·tîm mê·’ā·ḥō·wr way·yō·ḵə·lū ’eṯ- yiś·rā·’êl bə·ḵāl peh bə·ḵāl zōṯ ’ap·pōw lō- šāḇ yā·ḏōw wə·‘ō·wḏ nə·ṭū·yāhWLC · 12

Judgment against Israel’s Hypocrisy

But the people did not return to Him who struck them; they did not seek the LORD of Hosts.

𐤅𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤋𐤀 𐤔𐤁 𐤏𐤃 𐤄𐤌𐤊𐤄𐤅 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤋𐤀 𐤃𐤓𐤔𐤅𐤎 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤑𐤁𐤀𐤅𐤕

וְהָעָ֥ם לֹא־ שָׁ֖ב עַד־ הַמַּכֵּ֑הוּ וְאֶת־ לֹ֥א דָרָֽשׁוּ׃ס יְהוָ֥ה צְבָא֖וֹת wə·hā·‘ām lō- šāḇ ‘aḏ- ham·mak·kê·hū wə·’eṯ- lō ḏā·rā·šū Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯWLC · 13

14

So the LORD will cut off Israel’s head and tail, [both] palm branch and reed in a single day.

יְהוָ֜ה וַיַּכְרֵ֨ת מִיִּשְׂרָאֵ֗ל רֹ֧אשׁ וְזָנָ֛ב כִּפָּ֥ה וְאַגְמ֖וֹן אֶחָֽד׃ י֥וֹם Yah·weh way·yaḵ·rêṯ mî·yiś·rā·’êl rōš wə·zā·nāḇ kip·pāh wə·’aḡ·mō·wn ’e·ḥāḏ yō·wmWLC · 14

The head is the elder and honorable man, and the tail is the prophet who teaches lies.

𐤄𐤓𐤀𐤔 𐤆𐤒𐤍 𐤅𐤍𐤔𐤅𐤀 𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤄𐤆𐤍𐤁 𐤅𐤍𐤁𐤉𐤀 𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤌𐤅𐤓𐤄 𐤔𐤒𐤓

הָרֹ֑אשׁ זָקֵ֥ן וּנְשׂוּא־ פָנִ֖ים ה֣וּא הַזָּנָֽב׃ וְנָבִ֥יא ה֥וּא מֽוֹרֶה־ שֶּׁ֖קֶר hā·rōš zā·qên ū·nə·śū- p̄ā·nîm hū haz·zā·nāḇ wə·nā·ḇî hū mō·w·reh- še·qerWLC · 15

For those who guide this people… mislead them, and those they mislead are swallowed up.

𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉𐤅 𐤌𐤀𐤔𐤓𐤉 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤄𐤆𐤄 𐤌𐤕𐤏𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤌𐤀𐤔𐤓𐤉𐤅 𐤌𐤁𐤋𐤏𐤉𐤌

וַיִּֽהְי֛וּ מְאַשְּׁרֵ֥י הָֽעָם־ הַזֶּ֖ה מַתְעִ֑ים וּמְאֻשָּׁרָ֖יו מְבֻלָּעִֽים׃ way·yih·yū mə·’aš·šə·rê hā·‘ām- haz·zeh maṯ·‘îm ū·mə·’uš·šā·rāw mə·ḇul·lā·‘îmWLC · 16

17

Therefore… the Lord takes no pleasure in their young men; He has no compassion on their fatherless and widows. For every one of them is godless and wicked, and every mouth speaks folly. Despite all this, His anger is not turned away; His hand is still upraised.

𐤏𐤋 𐤊𐤍 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤔𐤌𐤇 𐤏𐤋 𐤁𐤇𐤅𐤓𐤉𐤅 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤓𐤇𐤌 𐤉𐤕𐤌𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤋𐤌𐤍𐤕𐤉𐤅 𐤊𐤉 𐤊𐤋𐤅 𐤇𐤍𐤐 𐤅𐤌𐤓𐤏 𐤅𐤊𐤋 𐤐𐤄 𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤍𐤁𐤋𐤄 𐤁𐤊𐤋 𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤐𐤅 𐤋𐤀 𐤔𐤁 𐤉𐤃𐤅 𐤅𐤏𐤅𐤃 𐤍𐤈𐤅𐤉𐤄

עַל־ כֵּ֨ן אֲדֹנָ֗י וְאֶת־ לֹֽא־ יִשְׂמַ֣ח׀ עַל־ בַּחוּרָ֜יו לֹ֣א יְרַחֵ֔ם יְתֹמָ֤יו וְאֶת־ אַלְמְנֹתָיו֙ כִּ֤י כֻלּוֹ֙ חָנֵ֣ף וּמֵרַ֔ע וְכָל־ פֶּ֖ה דֹּבֵ֣ר נְבָלָ֑ה בְּכָל־ זֹאת֙ אַפּ֔וֹ לֹא־ שָׁ֣ב יָד֥וֹ וְע֖וֹד נְטוּיָֽה׃ ‘al- kên ’ă·ḏō·nāy wə·’eṯ- lō- yiś·maḥ ‘al- ba·ḥū·rāw lō yə·ra·ḥêm yə·ṯō·māw wə·’eṯ- ’al·mə·nō·ṯāw kî ḵul·lōw ḥā·nêp̄ ū·mê·ra‘ wə·ḵāl peh dō·ḇêr nə·ḇā·lāh bə·ḵāl zōṯ ’ap·pōw lō- šāḇ yā·ḏōw wə·‘ō·wḏ nə·ṭū·yāhWLC · 17

Judgment against Israel’s Unrepentance

For wickedness burns like a fire that consumes the thorns and briers and kindles the forest thickets, which roll upward in billows of smoke.

𐤊𐤉 𐤓𐤔𐤏𐤄 𐤁𐤏𐤓𐤄 𐤊𐤀𐤔 𐤕𐤀𐤊𐤋 𐤅𐤔𐤉𐤕 𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤓 𐤅𐤕𐤑𐤕 𐤄𐤉𐤏𐤓 𐤁𐤎𐤁𐤊𐤉 𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤀𐤁𐤊𐤅 𐤂𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤏𐤔𐤍

כִּֽי־ רִשְׁעָ֔ה בָעֲרָ֤ה כָאֵשׁ֙ תֹּאכֵ֑ל וָשַׁ֖יִת שָׁמִ֥יר וַתִּצַּת֙ הַיַּ֔עַר בְּסִֽבְכֵ֣י וַיִּֽתְאַבְּכ֖וּ גֵּא֥וּת עָשָֽׁן׃ kî- riš·‘āh ḇā·‘ă·rāh ḵā·’êš tō·ḵêl wā·ša·yiṯ šā·mîr wat·tiṣ·ṣaṯ hay·ya·‘ar bə·siḇ·ḵê way·yiṯ·’ab·bə·ḵū gê·’ūṯ ‘ā·šānWLC · 18

By the wrath of the LORD of Hosts the land is scorched, and the people are fuel for the fire. No man even spares… his brother.

בְּעֶבְרַ֛ת יְהוָ֥ה צְבָא֖וֹת אָ֑רֶץ נֶעְתַּ֣ם הָעָם֙ וַיְהִ֤י כְּמַאֲכֹ֣לֶת אֵ֔שׁ לֹ֥א אִ֥ישׁ יַחְמֹֽלוּ׃ אֶל־ אָחִ֖יו bə·‘eḇ·raṯ Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ ’ā·reṣ ne‘·tam hā·‘ām way·hî kə·ma·’ă·ḵō·leṯ ’êš lō ’îš yaḥ·mō·lū ’el- ’ā·ḥîwWLC · 19

They carve out what is on the right, but they are still hungry; they eat what is on the left, but they are still not satisfied. Each one devours the flesh of his own offspring.

Manasseh [devours] Ephraim, and Ephraim Manasseh; together… they turn against Judah. Despite all this, His anger is not turned away; His hand is still upraised.
