Chapter 15

Judgment to Continue

Then the LORD said to me: “Even if Moses and Samuel should stand before Me, My heart would not go out to this people. Send them from My presence, and let them go!

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤀𐤌 𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤅𐤔𐤌𐤅𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤏𐤌𐤃 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤍𐤐𐤔𐤉 𐤀𐤉𐤍 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤆𐤄 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤔𐤋𐤇 𐤌𐤏𐤋 𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤅𐤉𐤑𐤀𐤅

יְהוָה֙ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֵלַ֔י אִם־ מֹשֶׁ֤ה וּשְׁמוּאֵל֙ יַעֲמֹ֨ד לְפָנַ֔י נַפְשִׁ֖י אֵ֥ין אֶל־ הַזֶּ֑ה הָעָ֣ם שַׁלַּ֥ח מֵֽעַל־ פָּנַ֖י וְיֵצֵֽאוּ׃ Yah·weh way·yō·mer ’ê·lay ’im- mō·šeh ū·šə·mū·’êl ya·‘ă·mōḏ lə·p̄ā·nay nap̄·šî ’ên ’el- haz·zeh hā·‘ām šal·laḥ mê·‘al- pā·nay wə·yê·ṣê·’ūWLC · 1

  • If they ask you,… ‘Where shall we go?’ you are to tell them that this is what the LORD says: ‘Those destined for death, to death; those destined for the sword, to the sword; those destined for famine, to famine; and those destined for captivity, to captivity.’

וְהָיָ֛ה כִּֽי־ יֹאמְר֥וּ אֵלֶ֖יךָ אָ֣נָה נֵצֵ֑א וְאָמַרְתָּ֨ אֲלֵיהֶ֜ם כֹּֽה־ יְהוָ֗ה אָמַ֣ר אֲשֶׁ֨ר לַמָּ֤וֶת לַמָּ֙וֶת֙ וַאֲשֶׁ֤ר לַחֶ֙רֶב֙ לַחֶ֔רֶב וַאֲשֶׁ֤ר לָֽרָעָב֙ לָֽרָעָ֔ב וַאֲשֶׁ֥ר לַשְּׁבִ֖י לַשֶּֽׁבִי׃ wə·hā·yāh kî- yō·mə·rū ’ê·le·ḵā ’ā·nāh nê·ṣê wə·’ā·mar·tā ’ă·lê·hem kōh- Yah·weh ’ā·mar ’ă·šer lam·mā·weṯ lam·mā·weṯ wa·’ă·šer la·ḥe·reḇ la·ḥe·reḇ wa·’ă·šer lā·rā·‘āḇ lā·rā·‘āḇ wa·’ă·šer laš·šə·ḇî laš·še·ḇîWLC · 2

I will appoint over them four kinds of destroyers, declares the LORD: the sword to kill, the dogs to drag away, and the birds of the air and beasts of the earth to devour and destroy.

𐤅𐤐𐤒𐤃𐤕𐤉 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤀𐤓𐤁𐤏 𐤌𐤔𐤐𐤇𐤅𐤕 𐤍𐤀𐤌 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤇𐤓𐤁 𐤋𐤄𐤓𐤂 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤊𐤋𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤎𐤇𐤁 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤏𐤅𐤐 𐤄𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤁𐤄𐤌𐤕 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤋𐤀𐤊𐤋 𐤅𐤋𐤄𐤔𐤇𐤉𐤕

וּפָקַדְתִּ֨י עֲלֵיהֶ֜ם אַרְבַּ֤ע מִשְׁפָּחוֹת֙ נְאֻם־ יְהוָ֔ה אֶת־ הַחֶ֣רֶב לַֽהֲרֹ֔ג וְאֶת־ הַכְּלָבִ֖ים לִסְחֹ֑ב וְאֶת־ ע֧וֹף הַשָּׁמַ֛יִם וְאֶת־ בֶּהֱמַ֥ת הָאָ֖רֶץ לֶאֱכֹ֥ל וּלְהַשְׁחִֽית׃ ū·p̄ā·qaḏ·tî ‘ă·lê·hem ’ar·ba‘ miš·pā·ḥō·wṯ nə·’um- Yah·weh ’eṯ- ha·ḥe·reḇ la·hă·rōḡ wə·’eṯ- hak·kə·lā·ḇîm lis·ḥōḇ wə·’eṯ- ‘ō·wp̄ haš·šā·ma·yim wə·’eṯ- be·hĕ·maṯ hā·’ā·reṣ le·’ĕ·ḵōl ū·lə·haš·ḥîṯWLC · 3

I will make them a horror to all the kingdoms of the earth because of what Manasseh son of Hezekiah king of Judah did in Jerusalem.

וּנְתַתִּ֣ים לִזְוָעָה לְכֹ֖ל מַמְלְכ֣וֹת הָאָ֑רֶץ בִּ֠גְלַל אֲשֶׁר־ מְנַשֶּׁ֤ה בֶן־ יְחִזְקִיָּ֙הוּ֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ יְהוּדָ֔ה עַ֥ל עָשָׂ֖ה בִּירוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ ū·nə·ṯat·tîm liz·wå̄·ʿå̄h lə·ḵōl mam·lə·ḵō·wṯ hā·’ā·reṣ biḡ·lal ’ă·šer- mə·naš·šeh ḇen- yə·ḥiz·qî·yā·hū me·leḵ yə·hū·ḏāh ‘al ‘ā·śāh bî·rū·šā·limWLC · 4

  • Who will have pity on you, O Jerusalem? Who will mourn for you? Who will turn aside to ask about your welfare

כִּ֠י מִֽי־ יַחְמֹ֤ל עָלַ֙יִךְ֙ יְר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔ם וּמִ֖י יָנ֣וּד לָ֑ךְ וּמִ֣י יָס֔וּר לִשְׁאֹ֥ל לְשָׁלֹ֖ם לָֽךְ׃ kî mî- yaḥ·mōl ‘ā·la·yiḵ yə·rū·šā·lim ū·mî yā·nūḏ lāḵ ū·mî yā·sūr liš·’ōl lə·šā·lōm lāḵWLC · 5

You have forsaken Me, declares the LORD. You have turned your back… So I will stretch out My hand against you and I will destroy you; I am weary of showing compassion.

𐤀𐤕 𐤍𐤈𐤔𐤕 𐤀𐤕𐤉 𐤍𐤀𐤌 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤇𐤅𐤓 𐤕𐤋𐤊𐤉 𐤅𐤀𐤈 𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤃𐤉 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤊 𐤅𐤀𐤔𐤇𐤉𐤕𐤊 𐤍𐤋𐤀𐤉𐤕𐤉 𐤄𐤍𐤇𐤌

אַ֣תְּ נָטַ֥שְׁתְּ אֹתִ֛י נְאֻם־ יְהוָ֖ה אָח֣וֹר תֵּלֵ֑כִי וָאַ֨ט אֶת־ יָדִ֤י עָלַ֙יִךְ֙ וָֽאַשְׁחִיתֵ֔ךְ נִלְאֵ֖יתִי הִנָּחֵֽם׃ ’at nā·ṭašt ’ō·ṯî nə·’um- Yah·weh ’ā·ḥō·wr tê·lê·ḵî wā·’aṭ ’eṯ- yā·ḏî ‘ā·la·yiḵ wā·’aš·ḥî·ṯêḵ nil·’ê·ṯî hin·nā·ḥêmWLC · 6

I will scatter them with a winnowing fork at the gates of the land. I will bereave and destroy My people who have not turned from their ways.

𐤅𐤀𐤆𐤓𐤌 𐤁𐤌𐤆𐤓𐤄 𐤁𐤔𐤏𐤓𐤉 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤔𐤊𐤋𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤁𐤃𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤕 𐤏𐤌𐤉 𐤋𐤅𐤀 𐤔𐤁𐤅 𐤌𐤃𐤓𐤊𐤉𐤄𐤌

וָאֶזְרֵ֥ם בְּמִזְרֶ֖ה בְּשַׁעֲרֵ֣י הָאָ֑רֶץ שִׁכַּ֤לְתִּי אִבַּ֙דְתִּי֙ אֶת־ עַמִּ֔י לוֹא־ שָֽׁבוּ׃ מִדַּרְכֵיהֶ֖ם wā·’ez·rêm bə·miz·reh bə·ša·‘ă·rê hā·’ā·reṣ šik·kal·tî ’ib·baḏ·tî ’eṯ- ‘am·mî lō·w- šā·ḇū mid·dar·ḵê·hemWLC · 7

I will make their widows more numerous than the sand of the sea. I will bring… a destroyer at noon against the mothers of young men. I will suddenly bring upon them anguish and dismay.

𐤀𐤋𐤌𐤍𐤕𐤅 𐤏𐤑𐤌𐤅 𐤋𐤉 𐤌𐤇𐤅𐤋 𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤁𐤀𐤕𐤉 𐤋𐤄𐤌 𐤔𐤃𐤃 𐤁𐤑𐤄𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤋 𐤀𐤌 𐤁𐤇𐤅𐤓 𐤐𐤕𐤀𐤌 𐤄𐤐𐤋𐤕𐤉 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤄 𐤏𐤉𐤓 𐤅𐤁𐤄𐤋𐤅𐤕

אַלְמְנֹתָו֙ עָֽצְמוּ־ לִ֤י מֵח֣וֹל יַמִּ֔ים הֵבֵ֨אתִי לָהֶ֥ם שֹׁדֵ֣ד בַּֽצָּהֳרָ֑יִם עַל־ אֵ֛ם בָּח֖וּר פִּתְאֹ֔ם הִפַּ֤לְתִּי עָלֶ֙יהָ֙ עִ֖יר וּבֶהָלֽוֹת׃ ʾal·mə·nō·ṯå̄w ‘ā·ṣə·mū- lî mê·ḥō·wl yam·mîm hê·ḇê·ṯî lā·hem šō·ḏêḏ baṣ·ṣā·ho·rā·yim ‘al- ’êm bā·ḥūr piṯ·’ōm hip·pal·tî ‘ā·le·hā ‘îr ū·ḇe·hā·lō·wṯWLC · 8

The mother of seven will grow faint; she will breathe her last breath. Her sun will set while it is still day; she will be disgraced and humiliated. And the rest I will put to the sword in the presence of their enemies,” declares the LORD.

Jeremiah’s Woe

Woe to me, my mother, that you have borne me, a man of strife… and conflict in all the land. I have neither lent nor borrowed, yet everyone curses me.

אֽוֹי־ לִ֣י אִמִּ֔י כִּ֣י יְלִדְתִּ֗נִי אִ֥ישׁ רִ֛יב וְאִ֥ישׁ מָד֖וֹן לְכָל־ הָאָ֑רֶץ לֹֽא־ נָשִׁ֥יתִי וְלֹא־ נָֽשׁוּ־ בִ֖י כֻּלֹּ֥ה מְקַלְלַֽונִי׃ס ’ō·w- lî ’im·mî kî yə·liḏ·ti·nî ’îš rîḇ wə·’îš mā·ḏō·wn lə·ḵāl hā·’ā·reṣ lō- nā·šî·ṯî wə·lō- nā·šū- ḇî kul·lōh mə·qal·la·w·nîWLC · 10

The LORD said: “Surely… I will deliver you for a good purpose; surely I will… intercede with your enemy in your time of trouble, in your time of distress.

Can anyone smash iron— iron from the north— or bronze?

הֲיָרֹ֨עַ בַּרְזֶ֧ל׀ בַּרְזֶ֛ל מִצָּפ֖וֹן וּנְחֹֽשֶׁת׃ hă·yā·rō·a‘ bar·zel bar·zel miṣ·ṣā·p̄ō·wn ū·nə·ḥō·šeṯWLC · 12

Your wealth and your treasures I will give up as plunder, without charge for all your sins within all your borders.

𐤇𐤉𐤋𐤊 𐤅𐤀𐤅𐤑𐤓𐤅𐤕𐤉𐤊 𐤀𐤕𐤍 𐤋𐤁𐤆 𐤋𐤀 𐤁𐤌𐤇𐤉𐤓 𐤅𐤁𐤊𐤋 𐤇𐤈𐤀𐤅𐤕𐤉𐤊 𐤅𐤁𐤊𐤋 𐤂𐤁𐤅𐤋𐤉𐤊

חֵילְךָ֧ וְאוֹצְרוֹתֶ֛יךָ אֶתֵּ֖ן לָבַ֥ז לֹ֣א בִמְחִ֑יר וּבְכָל־ חַטֹּאותֶ֖יךָ וּבְכָל־ גְּבוּלֶֽיךָ׃ ḥê·lə·ḵā wə·’ō·wṣ·rō·w·ṯe·ḵā ’et·tên lā·ḇaz lō ḇim·ḥîr ū·ḇə·ḵāl ḥaṭ·ṭō·w·ṯe·ḵā ū·ḇə·ḵāl gə·ḇū·le·ḵāWLC · 13

Then I will enslave you to your enemies in a land you do not know, for My anger will kindle a fire that will burn against you.”

וְהַֽעֲבַרְתִּי֙ אֶת־ אֹ֣יְבֶ֔יךָ בְּאֶ֖רֶץ לֹ֣א יָדָ֑עְתָּ כִּֽי־ בְאַפִּ֖י קָדְחָ֥ה אֵ֛שׁ תּוּקָֽד׃ס עֲלֵיכֶ֥ם wə·ha·‘ă·ḇar·tî ’eṯ- ’ō·yə·ḇe·ḵā bə·’e·reṣ lō yā·ḏā·‘ə·tā kî- ḇə·’ap·pî qā·ḏə·ḥāh ’êš tū·qāḏ ‘ă·lê·ḵemWLC · 14

You understand, O LORD; remember me and attend to me. Avenge me against my persecutors. In Your patience…, do not take me away. Know that I endure reproach for Your honor.

אַתָּ֧ה יָדַ֣עְתָּ יְהוָ֗ה זָכְרֵ֤נִי וּפָקְדֵ֙נִי֙ וְהִנָּ֤קֶם לִי֙ מֵרֹ֣דְפַ֔י לְאֶ֥רֶךְ אַפְּךָ֖ אַל־ תִּקָּחֵ֑נִי דַּ֕ע שְׂאֵתִ֥י חֶרְפָּֽה׃ עָלֶ֖יךָ ’at·tāh yā·ḏa‘·tā Yah·weh zā·ḵə·rê·nî ū·p̄ā·qə·ḏê·nî wə·hin·nā·qem lî mê·rō·ḏə·p̄ay lə·’e·reḵ ’ap·pə·ḵā ’al- tiq·qā·ḥê·nî da‘ śə·’ê·ṯî ḥer·pāh ‘ā·le·ḵāWLC · 15

Your words were found, and I ate them. Your words became my joy… and my heart’s delight. For I bear Your name,… O LORD God of Hosts.

I never sat with the band of revelers, nor did I celebrate with them. Because Your hand was on me, I sat alone, for You have filled me with indignation.

Why is my pain unending, and my wound incurable, refusing to be healed? You have indeed become… like a mirage to me— water that is not there.

The LORD’s Promise

Therefore this is what the LORD says: “If you return, I will restore you; you will stand in My presence. And if you speak words that are noble instead of worthless, you will be My spokesman. It is they who must turn to you, but you must not turn to them.

לָכֵ֞ן כֹּֽה־ יְהוָ֗ה אָמַ֣ר אִם־ תָּשׁ֤וּב וַאֲשִֽׁיבְךָ֙ תַּֽעֲמֹ֔ד לְפָנַ֣י וְאִם־ תּוֹצִ֥יא יָקָ֛ר מִזּוֹלֵ֖ל תִֽהְיֶ֑ה כְּפִ֣י הֵ֙מָּה֙ יָשֻׁ֤בוּ אֵלֶ֔יךָ וְאַתָּ֖ה לֹֽא־ תָשׁ֥וּב אֲלֵיהֶֽם׃ lā·ḵên kōh- Yah·weh ’ā·mar ’im- tā·šūḇ wa·’ă·šî·ḇə·ḵā ta·‘ă·mōḏ lə·p̄ā·nay wə·’im- tō·w·ṣî yā·qār miz·zō·w·lêl ṯih·yeh kə·p̄î hêm·māh yā·šu·ḇū ’ê·le·ḵā wə·’at·tāh lō- ṯā·šūḇ ’ă·lê·hemWLC · 19

Then I will make you a wall to this people, a fortified wall of bronze; they will fight against you but will not overcome you, for I am with you to save and deliver you, declares the LORD.

וּנְתַתִּ֜יךָ לְחוֹמַ֤ת הַזֶּ֗ה לָעָ֣ם בְּצוּרָ֔ה נְחֹ֙שֶׁת֙ וְנִלְחֲמ֥וּ אֵלֶ֖יךָ וְלֹא־ י֣וּכְלוּ לָ֑ךְ כִּֽי־ אֲנִ֛י אִתְּךָ֥ לְהוֹשִֽׁיעֲךָ֥ וּלְהַצִּילֶ֖ךָ נְאֻם־ יְהוָֽה׃ ū·nə·ṯat·tî·ḵā lə·ḥō·w·maṯ haz·zeh lā·‘ām bə·ṣū·rāh nə·ḥō·šeṯ wə·nil·ḥă·mū ’ê·le·ḵā wə·lō- yū·ḵə·lū lāḵ kî- ’ă·nî ’it·tə·ḵā lə·hō·wō·šî·‘ă·ḵā ū·lə·haṣ·ṣî·le·ḵā nə·’um- Yah·wehWLC · 20

I will deliver you from the hand of the wicked and redeem you from the grasp of the ruthless.”
