Chapter 16
Disaster Predicted

Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying,

דְבַר־ יְהוָ֖ה וַיְהִ֥י אֵלַ֥י לֵאמֹֽר׃ ḏə·ḇar- Yah·weh way·hî ’ê·lay lê·mōr — WLC · 1

“You must not marry [or] have sons or daughters in this place.”

לֹֽא־ תִקַּ֥ח לְךָ֖ אִשָּׁ֑ה וְלֹֽא־ יִהְי֤וּ לְךָ֙ בָּנִ֣ים וּבָנ֔וֹת הַזֶּֽה׃ בַּמָּק֖וֹם lō- ṯiq·qaḥ lə·ḵā ’iš·šāh wə·lō- yih·yū lə·ḵā bā·nîm ū·ḇā·nō·wṯ haz·zeh bam·mā·qō·wm — WLC · 2

For this is what the LORD says concerning the sons and daughters born in this place, and the mothers who bore them, and the fathers… who fathered them in this land:
𐤊𐤉 𐤊𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤁𐤍𐤅𐤕 𐤄𐤆𐤄 𐤁𐤌𐤒𐤅𐤌 𐤅𐤏𐤋 𐤀𐤌𐤕𐤌 𐤄𐤉𐤋𐤅𐤃𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤁𐤅𐤕𐤌 𐤄𐤌𐤅𐤋𐤃𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤅𐤕𐤌 𐤄𐤉𐤋𐤃𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤅𐤕𐤌 𐤅𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤁𐤀𐤓𐤑
כִּי־ כֹ֣ה׀ יְהוָ֗ה אָמַ֣ר עַל־ הַבָּנִים֙ וְעַל־ הַבָּנ֔וֹת הַזֶּ֑ה בַּמָּק֣וֹם וְעַֽל־ אִמֹּתָ֞ם הַיִּלּוֹדִ֖ים אֲבוֹתָ֛ם הַמּוֹלִדִ֥ים אוֹתָ֖ם הַיֹּלְד֣וֹת אוֹתָ֗ם וְעַל־ הַזֹּֽאת׃ בָּאָ֥רֶץ kî- ḵōh Yah·weh ’ā·mar ‘al- hab·bā·nîm wə·‘al- hab·bā·nō·wṯ haz·zeh bam·mā·qō·wm wə·‘al- ’im·mō·ṯām hay·yil·lō·w·ḏîm ’ă·ḇō·w·ṯām ham·mō·w·li·ḏîm ’ō·w·ṯām hay·yō·lə·ḏō·wṯ ’ō·w·ṯām wə·‘al- haz·zōṯ bā·’ā·reṣ — WLC · 3

“They will die from deadly diseases. They will not be mourned… or buried, but will lie like dung on vvv the ground. They will be finished off by sword and famine, and their corpses will become food for the birds of the air and beasts of the earth.”

יָמֻ֗תוּ מְמוֹתֵ֨י תַחֲלֻאִ֜ים לֹ֤א יִסָּֽפְדוּ֙ וְלֹ֣א יִקָּבֵ֔רוּ יִֽהְי֑וּ לְדֹ֛מֶן עַל־ פְּנֵ֥י הָאֲדָמָ֖ה יִכְל֔וּ וּבַחֶ֤רֶב וּבָֽרָעָב֙ נִבְלָתָם֙ וְהָיְתָ֤ה לְמַאֲכָ֔ל לְע֥וֹף הַשָּׁמַ֖יִם וּלְבֶהֱמַ֥ת הָאָֽרֶץ׃ס yā·mu·ṯū mə·mō·w·ṯê ṯa·ḥă·lu·’îm lō yis·sā·p̄ə·ḏū wə·lō yiq·qā·ḇê·rū yih·yū lə·ḏō·men ‘al- pə·nê hā·’ă·ḏā·māh yiḵ·lū ū·ḇa·ḥe·reḇ ū·ḇā·rā·‘āḇ niḇ·lā·ṯām wə·hā·yə·ṯāh lə·ma·’ă·ḵāl lə·‘ō·wp̄ haš·šā·ma·yim ū·lə·ḇe·hĕ·maṯ hā·’ā·reṣ — WLC · 4

Indeed, this is what the LORD says: “Do not enter a house [where there is] a funeral meal. Do not go to mourn… or show sympathy for I have removed from this people My peace, My loving devotion, and My compassion,” declares the LORD

כִּֽי־ כֹ֣ה׀ יְהוָ֗ה אָמַ֣ר אַל־ תָּבוֹא֙ בֵּ֣ית מַרְזֵ֔חַ וְאַל־ תֵּלֵ֣ךְ לִסְפּ֔וֹד וְאַל־ תָּנֹ֖ד לָהֶ֑ם כִּֽי־ אָסַ֨פְתִּי אֶת־ מֵאֵ֨ת הַזֶּה֙ הָעָ֤ם־ שְׁלוֹמִ֜י הַחֶ֖סֶד וְאֶת־ הָֽרַחֲמִֽים׃ נְאֻם־ יְהוָ֔ה אֶת־ kî- ḵōh Yah·weh ’ā·mar ’al- tā·ḇō·w bêṯ mar·zê·aḥ wə·’al- tê·lêḵ lis·pō·wḏ wə·’al- tā·nōḏ lā·hem kî- ’ā·sap̄·tî ’eṯ- mê·’êṯ haz·zeh hā·‘ām- šə·lō·w·mî ha·ḥe·seḏ wə·’eṯ- hā·ra·ḥă·mîm nə·’um- Yah·weh ’eṯ- — WLC · 5

“Both great and small will die in this land. They will not be buried [or] mourned,… nor will anyone cut himself… or shave his head for them.

גְדֹלִ֧ים וּקְטַנִּ֛ים וּמֵ֨תוּ הַזֹּ֖את בָּאָ֥רֶץ לֹ֣א יִקָּבֵ֑רוּ וְלֹֽא־ יִסְפְּד֣וּ לָהֶ֔ם וְלֹ֣א יִתְגֹּדַ֔ד וְלֹ֥א יִקָּרֵ֖חַ לָהֶֽם׃ ḡə·ḏō·lîm ū·qə·ṭan·nîm ū·mê·ṯū haz·zōṯ bā·’ā·reṣ lō yiq·qā·ḇê·rū wə·lō- yis·pə·ḏū lā·hem wə·lō yiṯ·gō·ḏaḏ wə·lō yiq·qā·rê·aḥ lā·hem — WLC · 6

No food will be offered to comfort those who mourn… the dead; not even a cup of consolation will be given for the loss of a father… or mother.

וְלֹֽא־ יִפְרְס֥וּ לָהֶ֛ם עַל־ לְנַחֲמ֣וֹ אֵ֖בֶל עַל־ מֵ֑ת וְלֹֽא־ כּ֣וֹס תַּנְחוּמִ֔ים יַשְׁק֤וּ אוֹתָם֙ עַל־ אָבִ֖יו וְעַל־ אִמּֽוֹ׃ wə·lō- yip̄·rə·sū lā·hem ‘al- lə·na·ḥă·mōw ’ê·ḇel ‘al- mêṯ wə·lō- kō·ws tan·ḥū·mîm yaš·qū ’ō·w·ṯām ‘al- ’ā·ḇîw wə·‘al- ’im·mōw — WLC · 7

You must not enter a house where there is feasting and sit down with them to eat and drink.

לֹא־ תָב֖וֹא וּבֵית־ מִשְׁתֶּ֥ה לָשֶׁ֣בֶת אוֹתָ֑ם לֶאֱכֹ֖ל וְלִשְׁתּֽוֹת׃ס lō- ṯā·ḇō·w ū·ḇêṯ- miš·teh lā·še·ḇeṯ ’ō·w·ṯām le·’ĕ·ḵōl wə·liš·tō·wṯ — WLC · 8

For this is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel,… says: I am going to remove from this place, before your very eyes and in your days, the sounds of joy and gladness,… the voices… of the bride and bridegroom.
𐤊𐤉 𐤊𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤑𐤁𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤍𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤌𐤔𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤆𐤄 𐤄𐤌𐤒𐤅𐤌 𐤋𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤅𐤁𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤒𐤅𐤋 𐤔𐤔𐤅𐤍 𐤔𐤌𐤇𐤄 𐤒𐤅𐤋 𐤅𐤒𐤅𐤋 𐤅𐤒𐤅𐤋 𐤊𐤋𐤄 𐤇𐤕𐤍
כִּי֩ כֹ֨ה יְהוָ֤ה צְבָאוֹת֙ אֱלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל הִנְנִ֨י אָמַ֜ר מַשְׁבִּ֜ית מִן־ הַזֶּ֛ה הַמָּק֥וֹם לְעֵינֵיכֶ֖ם וּבִֽימֵיכֶ֑ם ק֤וֹל שָׂשׂוֹן֙ שִׂמְחָ֔ה ק֥וֹל וְק֣וֹל וְק֥וֹל כַּלָּֽה׃ חָתָ֖ן kî ḵōh Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ ’ĕ·lō·hê yiś·rā·’êl hin·nî ’ā·mar maš·bîṯ min- haz·zeh ham·mā·qō·wm lə·‘ê·nê·ḵem ū·ḇî·mê·ḵem qō·wl śā·śō·wn śim·ḥāh qō·wl wə·qō·wl wə·qō·wl kal·lāh ḥā·ṯān — WLC · 9

- When you tell these people all these things, they will ask you, ‘Why… has the LORD pronounced all this great disaster against us? What [is] our iniquity? What is the sin that we have committed against the LORD our God?’

וְהָיָ֗ה כִּ֤י תַגִּיד֙ הַזֶּ֔ה אֵ֥ת לָעָ֣ם כָּל־ הָאֵ֑לֶּה הַדְּבָרִ֖ים וְאָמְר֣וּ אֵלֶ֗יךָ עַל־ מֶה֩ יְהוָ֤ה דִבֶּ֨ר כָּל־ הַזֹּ֔את הַגְּדוֹלָה֙ הָרָעָ֤ה עָלֵ֙ינוּ֙ אֵ֣ת וּמֶ֤ה עֲוֺנֵ֙נוּ֙ וּמֶ֣ה חַטָּאתֵ֔נוּ אֲשֶׁ֥ר חָטָ֖אנוּ לַֽיהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ׃ wə·hā·yāh kî ṯag·gîḏ haz·zeh ’êṯ lā·‘ām kāl- hā·’êl·leh had·də·ḇā·rîm wə·’ā·mə·rū ’ê·le·ḵā ‘al- meh Yah·weh ḏib·ber kāl- haz·zōṯ hag·gə·ḏō·w·lāh hā·rā·‘āh ‘ā·lê·nū ’êṯ ū·meh ‘ă·wō·nê·nū ū·meh ḥaṭ·ṭā·ṯê·nū ’ă·šer ḥā·ṭā·nū Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê·nū — WLC · 10

Then you are to answer them:… ‘[It is] because your fathers have forsaken Me, declares the LORD, and followed… other gods, and served and worshiped them. They abandoned Me and did not keep My instruction.

וְאָמַרְתָּ֣ אֲלֵיהֶ֗ם עַל֩ אֲשֶׁר־ אֲבוֹתֵיכֶ֤ם עָזְב֨וּ אוֹתִי֙ נְאֻם־ יְהוָ֔ה וַיֵּלְכ֗וּ אַֽחֲרֵי֙ אֲחֵרִ֔ים אֱלֹהִ֣ים וַיַּעַבְד֖וּם וַיִּשְׁתַּחֲו֣וּ לָהֶ֑ם וְאֹתִ֣י עָזָ֔בוּ וְאֶת־ לֹ֥א שָׁמָֽרוּ׃ תּוֹרָתִ֖י wə·’ā·mar·tā ’ă·lê·hem ‘al ’ă·šer- ’ă·ḇō·w·ṯê·ḵem ‘ā·zə·ḇū ’ō·w·ṯî nə·’um- Yah·weh way·yê·lə·ḵū ’a·ḥă·rê ’ă·ḥê·rîm ’ĕ·lō·hîm way·ya·‘aḇ·ḏūm way·yiš·ta·ḥă·wū lā·hem wə·’ō·ṯî ‘ā·zā·ḇū wə·’eṯ- lō šā·mā·rū tō·w·rā·ṯî — WLC · 11

And you have done more evil than your fathers. See how each of you follows… the stubbornness of his evil heart instead of obeying Me.
𐤅𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤋𐤏𐤔𐤅𐤕 𐤄𐤓𐤏𐤕𐤌 𐤌𐤀𐤁𐤅𐤕𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤊𐤌 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤄𐤋𐤊𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤉 𐤔𐤓𐤓𐤅𐤕 𐤄𐤓𐤏 𐤋𐤁𐤅 𐤋𐤁𐤋𐤕𐤉 𐤔𐤌𐤏 𐤀𐤋𐤉
וְאַתֶּ֛ם לַעֲשׂ֖וֹת הֲרֵעֹתֶ֥ם מֵאֲבֽוֹתֵיכֶ֑ם וְהִנְּכֶ֣ם אִ֚ישׁ הֹלְכִ֗ים אַֽחֲרֵי֙ שְׁרִר֣וּת הָרָ֔ע לִבּֽוֹ־ לְבִלְתִּ֖י שְׁמֹ֥עַ אֵלָֽי׃ wə·’at·tem la·‘ă·śō·wṯ hă·rê·‘ō·ṯem mê·’ă·ḇō·w·ṯê·ḵem wə·hin·nə·ḵem ’îš hō·lə·ḵîm ’a·ḥă·rê šə·ri·rūṯ hā·rā‘ lib·bōw- lə·ḇil·tî šə·mō·a‘ ’ê·lāy — WLC · 12

So I will cast you out of this land into a land that neither you nor your fathers have known. There you will serve other gods day and night, for I will show you no favor.’

וְהֵטַלְתִּ֣י אֶתְכֶ֗ם מֵעַל֙ הַזֹּ֔את הָאָ֣רֶץ עַל־ הָאָ֕רֶץ אֲשֶׁר֙ לֹ֣א אַתֶּ֖ם וַאֲבֽוֹתֵיכֶ֑ם יְדַעְתֶּ֔ם שָׁ֞ם אֶת־ וַעֲבַדְתֶּם־ אֲחֵרִים֙ אֱלֹהִ֤ים יוֹמָ֣ם וָלַ֔יְלָה אֲשֶׁ֛ר אֶתֵּ֥ן לָכֶ֖ם לֹֽא־ חֲנִינָֽה׃ס wə·hê·ṭal·tî ’eṯ·ḵem mê·‘al haz·zōṯ hā·’ā·reṣ ‘al- hā·’ā·reṣ ’ă·šer lō ’at·tem wa·’ă·ḇō·w·ṯê·ḵem yə·ḏa‘·tem šām ’eṯ- wa·‘ă·ḇaḏ·tem- ’ă·ḥê·rîm ’ĕ·lō·hîm yō·w·mām wā·lay·lāh ’ă·šer ’et·tên lā·ḵem lō- ḥă·nî·nāh — WLC · 13
God Will Restore Israel

Yet behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when they will no longer say, ‘As surely as the LORD lives, who brought the Israelites {up}… out of the land of Egypt.’

Instead [they will say]…, ‘As surely as the LORD lives, who brought the Israelites {up}… out of the land of the north and all the other lands to which He had banished them.’… For I will return them to their land that I gave to their forefathers.

כִּ֣י אִם־ יְהוָ֗ה חַי־ אֲשֶׁ֨ר הֶעֱלָ֜ה אֶת־ בְּנֵ֤י יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ מֵאֶ֣רֶץ צָפ֔וֹן וּמִכֹּל֙ הָֽאֲרָצ֔וֹת אֲשֶׁ֥ר הִדִּיחָ֖ם שָׁ֑מָּה וַהֲשִֽׁבֹתִים֙ עַל־ אַדְמָתָ֔ם אֲשֶׁ֥ר נָתַ֖תִּי לַאֲבוֹתָֽם׃ס kî ’im- Yah·weh ḥay- ’ă·šer he·‘ĕ·lāh ’eṯ- bə·nê yiś·rā·’êl mê·’e·reṣ ṣā·p̄ō·wn ū·mik·kōl hā·’ă·rā·ṣō·wṯ ’ă·šer hid·dî·ḥām šām·māh wa·hă·ši·ḇō·ṯîm ‘al- ’aḏ·mā·ṯām ’ă·šer nā·ṯat·tî la·’ă·ḇō·w·ṯām — WLC · 15

But for now I will send for many fishermen, declares the LORD, and they will catch them. After that… I will send for many hunters, and they will hunt them down on every mountain… and hill, even from the clefts of the rocks.

הִנְנִ֨י שֹׁלֵ֜חַ רַבִּ֛ים לְדַוָּגִים נְאֻם־ יְהוָ֖ה וְדִיג֑וּם וְאַֽחֲרֵי־ כֵ֗ן אֶשְׁלַח֙ לְרַבִּ֣ים צַיָּדִ֔ים וְצָד֞וּם מֵעַ֤ל כָּל־ הַר֙ וּמֵעַ֣ל כָּל־ גִּבְעָ֔ה וּמִנְּקִיקֵ֖י הַסְּלָעִֽים׃ hin·nî šō·lê·aḥ rab·bîm lə·ḏaw·wå̄·ḡīm nə·’um- Yah·weh wə·ḏî·ḡūm wə·’a·ḥă·rê- ḵên ’eš·laḥ lə·rab·bîm ṣay·yā·ḏîm wə·ṣā·ḏūm mê·‘al kāl- har ū·mê·‘al kāl- giḇ·‘āh ū·min·nə·qî·qê has·sə·lā·‘îm — WLC · 16

For My eyes [are] on all their ways. They are not hidden from My face, and their guilt is not concealed from My eyes.

כִּ֤י עֵינַי֙ עַל־ כָּל־ דַּרְכֵיהֶ֔ם לֹ֥א נִסְתְּר֖וּ מִלְּפָנָ֑י עֲוֺנָ֖ם וְלֹֽא־ נִצְפַּ֥ן מִנֶּ֥גֶד עֵינָֽי׃ kî ‘ê·nay ‘al- kāl- dar·ḵê·hem lō nis·tə·rū mil·lə·p̄ā·nāy ‘ă·wō·nām wə·lō- niṣ·pan min·ne·ḡeḏ ‘ê·nāy — WLC · 17

And I will first repay them double their iniquity and their sin, because they have defiled My land with the carcasses of their detestable idols, and they have filled My inheritance with their abominations.”

O LORD, my strength and my fortress, my refuge in the day of distress, the nations will come to You from the ends of the earth, and they will say, “Our fathers inherited nothing but lies, worthless idols of no benefit at all.

“Therefore behold, I will inform them, and this time I will make them know My power and My might; then they will know that My name is the LORD.
