Chapter 21
Jerusalem Will Fall to Babylon
1
This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD when King Zedekiah sent to him Pashhur son of Malchijah and the priest Zephaniah son of Maaseiah. They said,
𐤄𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤓𐤌𐤉𐤄𐤅 𐤌𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤑𐤃𐤒𐤉𐤄𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤁𐤔𐤋𐤇 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤐𐤔𐤇𐤅𐤓 𐤁𐤍 𐤌𐤋𐤊𐤉𐤄 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤊𐤄𐤍 𐤑𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤄 𐤁𐤍 𐤌𐤏𐤔𐤉𐤄 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓
הַדָּבָ֛ר אֲשֶׁר־ הָיָ֥ה אֶֽל־ יִרְמְיָ֖הוּ מֵאֵ֣ת יְהוָ֑ה הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ צִדְקִיָּ֗הוּ אֶת־ בִּשְׁלֹ֨חַ אֵלָ֜יו פַּשְׁחוּר֙ בֶּן־ מַלְכִּיָּ֔ה וְאֶת־ הַכֹּהֵ֖ן צְפַנְיָ֧ה בֶן־ מַעֲשֵׂיָ֛ה לֵאמֹֽר׃ had·dā·ḇār ’ă·šer- hā·yāh ’el- yir·mə·yā·hū mê·’êṯ Yah·weh ham·me·leḵ ṣiḏ·qî·yā·hū ’eṯ- biš·lō·aḥ ’ê·lāw paš·ḥūr ben- mal·kî·yāh wə·’eṯ- hak·kō·hên ṣə·p̄an·yāh ḇen- ma·‘ă·śê·yāh lê·mōr — WLC · 1

“Please inquire of the LORD on our behalf, since Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon is waging war against us. Perhaps the LORD will perform for us something like all His past wonders, so that [Nebuchadnezzar] will withdraw from us.”

נָ֤א דְּרָשׁ־ יְהוָ֔ה בַעֲדֵ֙נוּ֙ אֶת־ כִּ֛י נְבוּכַדְרֶאצַּ֥ר מֶֽלֶךְ־ בָּבֶ֖ל נִלְחָ֣ם עָלֵ֑ינוּ אוּלַי֩ יְהוָ֤ה יַעֲשֶׂ֨ה אוֹתָ֙נוּ֙ כְּכָל־ נִפְלְאֹתָ֔יו וְיַעֲלֶ֖ה מֵעָלֵֽינוּ׃ס nā də·rāš- Yah·weh ḇa·‘ă·ḏê·nū ’eṯ- kî nə·ḇū·ḵaḏ·reṣ·ṣar me·leḵ- bā·ḇel nil·ḥām ‘ā·lê·nū ’ū·lay Yah·weh ya·‘ă·śeh ’ō·w·ṯā·nū kə·ḵāl- nip̄·lə·’ō·ṯāw wə·ya·‘ă·leh mê·‘ā·lê·nū — WLC · 2

But Jeremiah answered -, “You are to tell… Zedekiah that

יִרְמְיָ֖הוּ וַיֹּ֥אמֶר אֲלֵיהֶ֑ם תֹאמְרֻ֖ן אֶל־ צִדְקִיָּֽהוּ׃ כֹּ֥ה yir·mə·yā·hū way·yō·mer ’ă·lê·hem ṯō·mə·run ’el- ṣiḏ·qî·yā·hū kōh — WLC · 3

this is what the LORD, the God of Israel,… says: ‘I will turn against you the weapons of war in your hands, with which you are fighting the king of Babylon… and the Chaldeans who besiege you outside the wall, and I will assemble [their forces] in the center of this city.

כֹּֽה־ יְהוָ֜ה אֱלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל הִנְנִ֣י אָמַ֨ר מֵסֵב֮ אֶת־ כְּלֵ֣י הַמִּלְחָמָה֮ אֲשֶׁ֣ר בְּיֶדְכֶם֒ אֲשֶׁ֨ר אַתֶּ֜ם נִלְחָמִ֣ים בָּ֗ם אֶת־ מֶ֤לֶךְ בָּבֶל֙ וְאֶת־ הַכַּשְׂדִּ֔ים הַצָּרִ֣ים עֲלֵיכֶ֔ם מִח֖וּץ לַֽחוֹמָ֑ה וְאָסַפְתִּ֣י אוֹתָ֔ם אֶל־ תּ֖וֹךְ הַזֹּֽאת׃ הָעִ֥יר kōh- Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê yiś·rā·’êl hin·nî ’ā·mar mê·sêḇ ’eṯ- kə·lê ham·mil·ḥā·māh ’ă·šer bə·yeḏ·ḵem ’ă·šer ’at·tem nil·ḥā·mîm bām ’eṯ- me·leḵ bā·ḇel wə·’eṯ- hak·kaś·dîm haṣ·ṣā·rîm ‘ă·lê·ḵem mi·ḥūṣ la·ḥō·w·māh wə·’ā·sap̄·tî ’ō·w·ṯām ’el- tō·wḵ haz·zōṯ hā·‘îr — WLC · 4

And I Myself will fight against you with an outstretched hand and a mighty arm, with anger, fury, and great wrath.

אֲנִי֙ וְנִלְחַמְתִּ֤י אִתְּכֶ֔ם נְטוּיָ֖ה בְּיָ֥ד חֲזָקָ֑ה וּבִזְר֣וֹעַ וּבְאַ֥ף וּבְחֵמָ֖ה גָּדֽוֹל׃ וּבְקֶ֥צֶף ’ă·nî wə·nil·ḥam·tî ’it·tə·ḵem nə·ṭū·yāh bə·yāḏ ḥă·zā·qāh ū·ḇiz·rō·w·a‘ ū·ḇə·’ap̄ ū·ḇə·ḥê·māh gā·ḏō·wl ū·ḇə·qe·ṣep̄ — WLC · 5

I will strike down the residents of this city, both man and beast. They will die in a terrible plague.’

וְהִכֵּיתִ֗י אֶת־ יֽוֹשְׁבֵי֙ הַזֹּ֔את וְאֶת־ הָעִ֣יר הָאָדָ֖ם וְאֶת־ הַבְּהֵמָ֑ה יָמֻֽתוּ׃ גָּד֖וֹל בְּדֶ֥בֶר wə·hik·kê·ṯî ’eṯ- yō·wō·šə·ḇê haz·zōṯ wə·’eṯ- hā·‘îr hā·’ā·ḏām wə·’eṯ- hab·bə·hê·māh yā·mu·ṯū gā·ḏō·wl bə·ḏe·ḇer — WLC · 6

‘After that…,’ declares the LORD, ‘I will hand over Zedekiah king of Judah, his officers, and the people in this… city who survive the plague… and sword… and famine, to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and to their enemies… who seek their lives. He will put them vvv to the sword; he will not spare them [or] show pity [or] compassion.’

וְאַחֲרֵי־ כֵ֣ן נְאֻם־ יְהוָ֡ה אֶתֵּ֣ן אֶת־ צִדְקִיָּ֣הוּ מֶֽלֶךְ־ יְהוּדָ֣ה וְאֶת־ עֲבָדָ֣יו׀ וְאֶת־ הָעָ֡ם וְאֶת־ הַזֹּ֜את מִן־ בָּעִ֨יר הַנִּשְׁאָרִים֩ הַדֶּ֣בֶר׀ מִן־ הַחֶ֣רֶב וּמִן־ הָרָעָ֗ב בְּיַד֙ נְבוּכַדְרֶאצַּ֣ר מֶֽלֶךְ־ בָּבֶ֔ל וּבְיַד֙ אֹֽיְבֵיהֶ֔ם וּבְיַ֖ד מְבַקְשֵׁ֣י נַפְשָׁ֑ם וְהִכָּ֣ם לְפִי־ חֶ֔רֶב לֹֽא־ יָח֣וּס עֲלֵיהֶ֔ם וְלֹ֥א יַחְמֹ֖ל וְלֹ֥א יְרַחֵֽם׃ wə·’a·ḥă·rê- ḵên nə·’um- Yah·weh ’et·tên ’eṯ- ṣiḏ·qî·yā·hū me·leḵ- yə·hū·ḏāh wə·’eṯ- ‘ă·ḇā·ḏāw wə·’eṯ- hā·‘ām wə·’eṯ- haz·zōṯ min- bā·‘îr han·niš·’ā·rîm had·de·ḇer min- ha·ḥe·reḇ ū·min- hā·rā·‘āḇ bə·yaḏ nə·ḇū·ḵaḏ·reṣ·ṣar me·leḵ- bā·ḇel ū·ḇə·yaḏ ’ō·yə·ḇê·hem ū·ḇə·yaḏ mə·ḇaq·šê nap̄·šām wə·hik·kām lə·p̄î- ḥe·reḇ lō- yā·ḥūs ‘ă·lê·hem wə·lō yaḥ·mōl wə·lō yə·ra·ḥêm — WLC · 7

Furthermore, you are to tell… this people that this is what the LORD says: ‘Behold, I set before you the way of life and the way of death.

תֹּאמַ֔ר וְאֶל־ הַזֶּה֙ הָעָ֤ם כֹּ֖ה יְהוָ֑ה אָמַ֣ר הִנְנִ֤י נֹתֵן֙ לִפְנֵיכֶ֔ם אֶת־ דֶּ֥רֶךְ הַחַיִּ֖ים וְאֶת־ דֶּ֥רֶךְ הַמָּֽוֶת׃ tō·mar wə·’el- haz·zeh hā·‘ām kōh Yah·weh ’ā·mar hin·nî nō·ṯên lip̄·nê·ḵem ’eṯ- de·reḵ ha·ḥay·yîm wə·’eṯ- de·reḵ ham·mā·weṯ — WLC · 8

Whoever stays in this city will die by sword and famine and plague, but whoever goes out and surrenders to the Chaldeans who besiege you will live; he will retain his life like a spoil of war.

הַיֹּשֵׁב֙ הַזֹּ֔את בָּעִ֣יר יָמ֕וּת בַּחֶ֖רֶב וּבָרָעָ֣ב וּבַדָּ֑בֶר וְהַיּוֹצֵא֩ וְנָפַ֨ל עַל־ הַכַּשְׂדִּ֜ים הַצָּרִ֤ים עֲלֵיכֶם֙ יִחְיֶה וְהָֽיְתָה־ לּ֥וֹ נַפְשׁ֖וֹ לְשָׁלָֽל׃ hay·yō·šêḇ haz·zōṯ bā·‘îr yā·mūṯ ba·ḥe·reḇ ū·ḇā·rā·‘āḇ ū·ḇad·dā·ḇer wə·hay·yō·w·ṣê wə·nā·p̄al ‘al- hak·kaś·dîm haṣ·ṣā·rîm ‘ă·lê·ḵem yiḥ·yɛh wə·hā·yə·ṯāh- lōw nap̄·šōw lə·šā·lāl — WLC · 9

For I have set My face against this city to bring disaster and not good, declares the LORD. It will be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon, who will destroy it with fire.’

A Message to the House of David

Moreover, [tell] the house of the king of Judah to hear the word of the LORD.

וּלְבֵית֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ יְהוּדָ֔ה שִׁמְע֖וּ דְּבַר־ יְהוָֽה׃ ū·lə·ḇêṯ me·leḵ yə·hū·ḏāh šim·‘ū də·ḇar- Yah·weh — WLC · 11

O house of David, this is what the LORD says: ‘Administer justice every morning…, and rescue the victim of robbery from the hand of his oppressor, or My wrath will go forth like fire and burn with no one to extinguish it because of their evil deeds.

Behold, I am against you who dwell above the valley, atop the rocky plateau— declares the LORD— you who say, “Who can come against us? Who can enter our dwellings?”

הִנְנִ֨י אֵלַ֜יִךְ יֹשֶׁ֧בֶת הָעֵ֛מֶק צ֥וּר הַמִּישֹׁ֖ר נְאֻם־ יְהוָ֑ה הָאֹֽמְרִים֙ מִֽי־ יֵחַ֣ת עָלֵ֔ינוּ וּמִ֥י יָב֖וֹא בִּמְעוֹנוֹתֵֽינוּ׃ hin·nî ’ê·la·yiḵ yō·še·ḇeṯ hā·‘ê·meq ṣūr ham·mî·šōr nə·’um- Yah·weh hā·’ō·mə·rîm mî- yê·ḥaṯ ‘ā·lê·nū ū·mî yā·ḇō·w bim·‘ō·w·nō·w·ṯê·nū — WLC · 13

I will punish you as your deeds deserve…, declares the LORD. I will kindle a fire in your forest that will consume everything around you.’”
