Chapter 22
A Warning to Judah’s Kings
1
This is what the LORD says: “Go down to the palace of the king of Judah and proclaim this message there -,
𐤊𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤓𐤃 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤅𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤕 𐤄𐤆𐤄 𐤄𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤔𐤌 𐤀𐤕
כֹּ֚ה יְהוָ֔ה אָמַ֣ר רֵ֖ד בֵּֽית־ מֶ֣לֶךְ יְהוּדָ֑ה וְדִבַּרְתָּ֣ הַזֶּֽה׃ הַדָּבָ֖ר שָׁ֔ם אֶת־ kōh Yah·weh ’ā·mar rêḏ bêṯ- me·leḵ yə·hū·ḏāh wə·ḏib·bar·tā haz·zeh had·dā·ḇār šām ’eṯ- — WLC · 1

saying, ‘Hear the word of the LORD, O king of Judah, who sits on the throne of David— you and your officials and your people who enter these gates.

וְאָֽמַרְתָּ֙ שְׁמַ֣ע דְּבַר־ יְהוָ֔ה מֶ֣לֶךְ יְהוּדָ֔ה הַיֹּשֵׁ֖ב עַל־ כִּסֵּ֣א דָוִ֑ד אַתָּ֤ה וַעֲבָדֶ֙יךָ֙ וְעַמְּךָ֔ הַבָּאִ֖ים הָאֵֽלֶּה׃ס בַּשְּׁעָרִ֥ים wə·’ā·mar·tā šə·ma‘ də·ḇar- Yah·weh me·leḵ yə·hū·ḏāh hay·yō·šêḇ ‘al- kis·sê ḏā·wiḏ ’at·tāh wa·‘ă·ḇā·ḏe·ḵā wə·‘am·mə·ḵā hab·bā·’îm hā·’êl·leh baš·šə·‘ā·rîm — WLC · 2

This is what the LORD says: Administer justice and righteousness. Rescue the victim of robbery from the hand of his oppressor. Do no wrong or violence to the foreigner, the fatherless, or the widow. Do not shed innocent blood in this place.

כֹּ֣ה׀ יְהוָ֗ה אָמַ֣ר עֲשׂ֤וּ מִשְׁפָּט֙ וּצְדָקָ֔ה וְהַצִּ֥ילוּ גָז֖וּל מִיַּ֣ד עָשׁ֑וֹק אַל־ תֹּנוּ֙ אַל־ תַּחְמֹ֔סוּ וְגֵר֩ יָת֨וֹם וְאַלְמָנָ֤ה אַֽל־ תִּשְׁפְּכ֖וּ נָקִ֔י וְדָ֣ם הַזֶּֽה׃ בַּמָּק֥וֹם kōh Yah·weh ’ā·mar ‘ă·śū miš·pāṭ ū·ṣə·ḏā·qāh wə·haṣ·ṣî·lū ḡā·zūl mî·yaḏ ‘ā·šō·wq ’al- tō·nū ’al- taḥ·mō·sū wə·ḡêr yā·ṯō·wm wə·’al·mā·nāh ’al- tiš·pə·ḵū nā·qî wə·ḏām haz·zeh bam·mā·qō·wm — WLC · 3

For if you will indeed carry out… these commands, then kings who sit on David’s throne will enter through the gates of this palace riding on chariots and horses— they and their officials and their people.

כִּ֤י אִם־ עָשׂוֹ֙ תַּֽעֲשׂ֔וּ אֶת־ הַזֶּ֑ה הַדָּבָ֖ר מְלָכִים֩ יֹשְׁבִ֨ים עַל־ לְדָוִ֜ד כִּסְא֗וֹ וּבָ֣אוּ בְשַׁעֲרֵ֣י הַזֶּ֡ה הַבַּ֣יִת רֹֽכְבִים֙ בָּרֶ֣כֶב וּבַסּוּסִ֔ים ה֥וּא וְעַבְדּוֹ וְעַמּֽוֹ׃ kî ’im- ‘ā·śōw ta·‘ă·śū ’eṯ- haz·zeh had·dā·ḇār mə·lā·ḵîm yō·šə·ḇîm ‘al- lə·ḏā·wiḏ kis·’ōw ū·ḇā·’ū ḇə·ša·‘ă·rê haz·zeh hab·ba·yiṯ rō·ḵə·ḇîm bā·re·ḵeḇ ū·ḇas·sū·sîm hū wə·ʿaḇ·dō wə·‘am·mōw — WLC · 4

But if you do not obey these words, then I swear by Myself, declares the LORD, that this house will become a pile of rubble.’”

A Warning about the Palace

For this is what the LORD says concerning the house of the king of Judah: “You are like Gilead to Me, like the summit of Lebanon; but I will surely… turn you into a desert, like cities that are uninhabited…

כִּֽי־ כֹ֣ה׀ יְהוָ֗ה אָמַ֣ר עַל־ בֵּית֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ יְהוּדָ֔ה אַתָּ֛ה גִּלְעָ֥ד לִ֖י רֹ֣אשׁ הַלְּבָנ֑וֹן אִם־ לֹ֤א אֲשִֽׁיתְךָ֙ מִדְבָּ֔ר עָרִ֖ים לֹ֥א נוֹשָׁבָה׃ kî- ḵōh Yah·weh ’ā·mar ‘al- bêṯ me·leḵ yə·hū·ḏāh ’at·tāh gil·‘āḏ lî rōš hal·lə·ḇā·nō·wn ’im- lō ’ă·šî·ṯə·ḵā miḏ·bār ‘ā·rîm lō nō·šå̄·ḇå̄h — WLC · 6

I will appoint destroyers against you, each man with his weapons, and they will cut down the choicest of your cedars and throw them into the fire.

וְקִדַּשְׁתִּ֥י מַשְׁחִתִ֖ים עָלֶ֛יךָ אִ֣ישׁ וְכֵלָ֑יו וְכָֽרְתוּ֙ מִבְחַ֣ר אֲרָזֶ֔יךָ וְהִפִּ֖ילוּ עַל־ הָאֵֽשׁ׃ wə·qid·daš·tî maš·ḥi·ṯîm ‘ā·le·ḵā ’îš wə·ḵê·lāw wə·ḵā·rə·ṯū miḇ·ḥar ’ă·rā·ze·ḵā wə·hip·pî·lū ‘al- hā·’êš — WLC · 7

And many nations will pass by this city and ask one… another, ‘Why… has the LORD done such a thing to this great city?’

רַבִּ֔ים גּוֹיִ֣ם וְעָֽבְרוּ֙ עַ֖ל הַזֹּ֑את הָעִ֣יר וְאָֽמְרוּ֙ אִ֣ישׁ אֶל־ רֵעֵ֔הוּ עַל־ מֶ֨ה יְהוָה֙ עָשָׂ֤ה כָּ֔כָה הַזֹּֽאת׃ הַגְּדוֹלָ֖ה לָעִ֥יר rab·bîm gō·w·yim wə·‘ā·ḇə·rū ‘al haz·zōṯ hā·‘îr wə·’ā·mə·rū ’îš ’el- rê·‘ê·hū ‘al- meh Yah·weh ‘ā·śāh kā·ḵāh haz·zōṯ hag·gə·ḏō·w·lāh lā·‘îr — WLC · 8

Then [people] will reply, ‘Because they have forsaken the covenant of the LORD their God and have worshiped and served other gods.’”

A Warning about Shallum

Do not weep for him who is dead; do not mourn his loss Weep bitterly… for him who is exiled, for he will never return to see his native land.

אַל־ תִּבְכּ֣וּ לְמֵ֔ת וְאַל־ תָּנֻ֖דוּ ל֑וֹ בְּכ֤וּ בָכוֹ֙ לַֽהֹלֵ֔ךְ כִּ֣י לֹ֤א יָשׁוּב֙ ע֔וֹד וְרָאָ֖ה אֶת־ מוֹלַדְתּֽוֹ׃ס אֶ֥רֶץ ’al- tiḇ·kū lə·mêṯ wə·’al- tā·nu·ḏū lōw bə·ḵū ḇā·ḵōw la·hō·lêḵ kî lō yā·šūḇ ‘ō·wḏ wə·rā·’āh ’eṯ- mō·w·laḏ·tōw ’e·reṣ — WLC · 10

For this is what the LORD says concerning Shallum son of Josiah, king of Judah, who succeeded… his father Josiah [but] has gone forth from this place: “He will never return…,

כִּ֣י כֹ֣ה יְ֠הוָה אָֽמַר־ אֶל־ שַׁלֻּ֨ם בֶּן־ יֹאשִׁיָּ֜הוּ מֶ֣לֶךְ יְהוּדָ֗ה הַמֹּלֵךְ֙ תַּ֚חַת אָבִ֔יו יֹאשִׁיָּ֣הוּ אֲשֶׁ֥ר יָצָ֖א מִן־ הַזֶּ֑ה הַמָּק֣וֹם לֹֽא־ יָשׁ֥וּב שָׁ֖ם עֽוֹד׃ kî ḵōh Yah·weh ’ā·mar- ’el- šal·lum ben- yō·šî·yā·hū me·leḵ yə·hū·ḏāh ham·mō·lêḵ ta·ḥaṯ ’ā·ḇîw yō·šî·yā·hū ’ă·šer yā·ṣā min- haz·zeh ham·mā·qō·wm lō- yā·šūḇ šām ‘ō·wḏ — WLC · 11

but he will die in the place to which he was exiled; - he will never see this land again.”

A Warning about Jehoiakim

“Woe to him who builds his palace by unrighteousness, and his upper rooms without justice, who makes his countrymen serve without pay, and fails to pay their wages,
𐤄𐤅𐤉 𐤁𐤍𐤄 𐤁𐤉𐤕𐤅 𐤁𐤋𐤀 𐤑𐤃𐤒 𐤅𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤅𐤕𐤉𐤅 𐤁𐤋𐤀 𐤌𐤔𐤐𐤈 𐤁𐤓𐤏𐤄𐤅 𐤉𐤏𐤁𐤃 𐤇𐤍𐤌 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤕𐤍 𐤋𐤅 𐤅𐤐𐤏𐤋𐤅
ה֣וֹי בֹּנֶ֤ה בֵיתוֹ֙ בְּֽלֹא־ צֶ֔דֶק וַעֲלִיּוֹתָ֖יו בְּלֹ֣א מִשְׁפָּ֑ט בְּרֵעֵ֙הוּ֙ יַעֲבֹ֣ד חִנָּ֔ם לֹ֥א יִתֶּן־ לֽוֹ׃ וּפֹעֲל֖וֹ hō·w bō·neh ḇê·ṯōw bə·lō- ṣe·ḏeq wa·‘ă·lî·yō·w·ṯāw bə·lō miš·pāṭ bə·rê·‘ê·hū ya·‘ă·ḇōḏ ḥin·nām lō yit·ten- lōw ū·p̄ō·‘ă·lōw — WLC · 13

who says, ‘I will build myself a great palace, with spacious upper rooms.’ So he cuts windows in it, panels it with cedar, and paints it with vermilion.

הָאֹמֵ֗ר אֶבְנֶה־ לִּי֙ מִדּ֔וֹת בֵּ֣ית מְרֻוָּחִ֑ים וַעֲלִיּ֖וֹת וְקָ֤רַֽע חַלּוֹנָ֔י לוֹ֙ וְסָפ֣וּן בָּאָ֔רֶז וּמָשׁ֖וֹחַ בַּשָּׁשַֽׁר׃ hā·’ō·mêr ’eḇ·neh- lî mid·dō·wṯ bêṯ mə·ruw·wā·ḥîm wa·‘ă·lî·yō·wṯ wə·qā·ra‘ ḥal·lō·w·nāy lōw wə·sā·p̄ūn bā·’ā·rez ū·mā·šō·w·aḥ baš·šā·šar — WLC · 14

Does it make you a king… to excel in cedar? Did not your father have food and drink? He administered justice and righteousness, and so it went well with him.

הֲתִֽמְלֹ֔ךְ כִּ֥י מְתַחֲרֶ֣ה אַתָּ֖ה בָאָ֑רֶז הֲל֧וֹא אָבִ֜יךָ אָכַ֣ל וְשָׁתָ֗ה וְעָשָׂ֤ה מִשְׁפָּט֙ וּצְדָקָ֔ה אָ֖ז ט֥וֹב לֽוֹ׃ hă·ṯim·lōḵ kî mə·ṯa·ḥă·reh ’at·tāh ḇā·’ā·rez hă·lō·w ’ā·ḇî·ḵā ’ā·ḵal wə·šā·ṯāh wə·‘ā·śāh miš·pāṭ ū·ṣə·ḏā·qāh ’āz ṭō·wḇ lōw — WLC · 15

He took up the cause of the poor and needy, and so it went well [with him]. Is this not what it means to know Me?” declares the LORD.

דָּ֛ן דִּין־ עָנִ֥י וְאֶבְי֖וֹן אָ֣ז ט֑וֹב הִ֛יא הֲלוֹא־ הַדַּ֥עַת אֹתִ֖י נְאֻם־ יְהוָֽה׃ dān dîn- ‘ā·nî wə·’eḇ·yō·wn ’āz ṭō·wḇ hî hă·lō·w- had·da·‘aṯ ’ō·ṯî nə·’um- Yah·weh — WLC · 16

“But your eyes and heart [are set on] nothing except… your own dishonest gain, on shedding… innocent blood, on practicing extortion and oppression.”

Therefore this is what the LORD says concerning Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah: “They will not mourn for him: ‘Alas, my brother! Alas, my sister!’ They will not mourn for him: ‘Alas, my master! Alas, his splendor!’

A Warning to Coniah

“As surely as I live,” declares the LORD, “even if you, Coniah son of Jehoiakim king of Judah, were a signet ring on My right… hand, I would pull you off.

This is what the LORD says: “Enroll this man as childless, a man who will not prosper in his lifetime… None… of his descendants will prosper to sit on the throne of David or to rule again in Judah.”
