Chapter 25
Seventy Years of Captivity
1
This is the word that came to Jeremiah concerning all the people of Judah in the fourth year of Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah, which was the first year of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon.
𐤄𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤏𐤋 𐤉𐤓𐤌𐤉𐤄𐤅 𐤏𐤋 𐤊𐤋 𐤏𐤌 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤄𐤓𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤕 𐤁𐤔𐤍𐤄 𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤍 𐤉𐤀𐤔𐤉𐤄𐤅 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤄𐤉𐤀 𐤄𐤓𐤀𐤔𐤍𐤉𐤕 𐤄𐤔𐤍𐤄 𐤋𐤍𐤁𐤅𐤊𐤃𐤓𐤀𐤑𐤓 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤁𐤁𐤋

So the prophet Jeremiah spoke to all the people of Judah… and all the residents of Jerusalem as follows:
𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤄𐤍𐤁𐤉𐤀 𐤉𐤓𐤌𐤉𐤄𐤅 𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤏𐤋 𐤊𐤋 𐤏𐤌 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤅𐤀𐤋 𐤊𐤋 𐤉𐤔𐤁𐤉 𐤉𐤓𐤅𐤔𐤋𐤌 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓
אֲשֶׁ֨ר הַנָּבִיא֙ יִרְמְיָ֤הוּ דִּבֶּ֜ר עַל־ כָּל־ עַ֣ם יְהוּדָ֔ה וְאֶ֛ל כָּל־ יֹשְׁבֵ֥י יְרוּשָׁלִַ֖ם לֵאמֹֽר׃ ’ă·šer han·nā·ḇî yir·mə·yā·hū dib·ber ‘al- kāl- ‘am yə·hū·ḏāh wə·’el kāl- yō·šə·ḇê yə·rū·šā·lim lê·mōr — WLC · 2

“From the thirteenth… year of Josiah son of Amon king of Judah until this very… day— twenty-three… years— the word of the LORD has come to me, and I have spoken to you again and again, but you have not listened.

And the LORD has sent all His servants the prophets to you again and again, but you have not listened [or] inclined your ear to hear.

יְהוָ֨ה וְשָׁלַח֩ כָּל־ עֲבָדָ֧יו הַנְּבִאִ֛ים אֲלֵיכֶ֜ם אֶֽת־ הַשְׁכֵּ֥ם וְשָׁלֹ֖חַ וְלֹ֣א שְׁמַעְתֶּ֑ם וְלֹֽא־ הִטִּיתֶ֥ם אֶֽת־ אָזְנְכֶ֖ם לִשְׁמֹֽעַ׃ Yah·weh wə·šā·laḥ kāl- ‘ă·ḇā·ḏāw han·nə·ḇi·’îm ’ă·lê·ḵem ’eṯ- haš·kêm wə·šā·lō·aḥ wə·lō šə·ma‘·tem wə·lō- hiṭ·ṭî·ṯem ’eṯ- ’ā·zə·nə·ḵem liš·mō·a‘ — WLC · 4

[The prophets] told [you], ‘Turn now, each of you, from your evil ways and deeds, and you can dwell in the land that the LORD has given… to you and your fathers vvv forever and ever.
𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤔𐤅𐤁𐤅 𐤍𐤀 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤄𐤓𐤏𐤄 𐤌𐤃𐤓𐤊𐤅 𐤅𐤌𐤓𐤏 𐤌𐤏𐤋𐤋𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤅𐤔𐤁𐤅 𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤃𐤌𐤄 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤍𐤕𐤍 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤋𐤊𐤌 𐤅𐤋𐤀𐤁𐤅𐤕𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤋𐤌𐤍 𐤏𐤅𐤋𐤌 𐤅𐤏𐤃 𐤏𐤅𐤋𐤌
לֵאמֹ֗ר שֽׁוּבוּ־ נָ֞א אִ֣ישׁ הָֽרָעָה֙ מִדַּרְכּ֤וֹ וּמֵרֹ֣עַ מַעַלְלֵיכֶ֔ם וּשְׁבוּ֙ עַל־ הָ֣אֲדָמָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֨ר נָתַ֧ן יְהוָ֛ה לָכֶ֖ם וְלַאֲבֽוֹתֵיכֶ֑ם לְמִן־ עוֹלָ֖ם וְעַד־ עוֹלָֽם׃ lê·mōr šū·ḇū- nā ’îš hā·rā·‘āh mid·dar·kōw ū·mê·rō·a‘ ma·‘al·lê·ḵem ū·šə·ḇū ‘al- hā·’ă·ḏā·māh ’ă·šer nā·ṯan Yah·weh lā·ḵem wə·la·’ă·ḇō·w·ṯê·ḵem lə·min- ‘ō·w·lām wə·‘aḏ- ‘ō·w·lām — WLC · 5

Do not follow… other gods to serve and worship them, and do not provoke Me to anger with the works of your hands. Then I will do you no harm

וְאַל־ תֵּלְכ֗וּ אַֽחֲרֵי֙ אֲחֵרִ֔ים אֱלֹהִ֣ים לְעָבְדָ֖ם וּלְהִשְׁתַּחֲוֺ֣ת לָהֶ֑ם וְלֹֽא־ תַכְעִ֤יסוּ אוֹתִי֙ בְּמַעֲשֵׂ֣ה יְדֵיכֶ֔ם וְלֹ֥א אָרַ֖ע לָכֶֽם׃ wə·’al- tê·lə·ḵū ’a·ḥă·rê ’ă·ḥê·rîm ’ĕ·lō·hîm lə·‘ā·ḇə·ḏām ū·lə·hiš·ta·ḥă·wōṯ lā·hem wə·lō- ṯaḵ·‘î·sū ’ō·w·ṯî bə·ma·‘ă·śêh yə·ḏê·ḵem wə·lō ’ā·ra‘ lā·ḵem — WLC · 6

‘But to your own harm, you have not listened to Me,’ declares the LORD, ‘so you have provoked Me to anger with the works of your hands
𐤋𐤓𐤏 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤕𐤌 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤍𐤀𐤌 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤋𐤌𐤏𐤍 𐤄𐤊𐤏𐤎𐤅𐤍𐤉 𐤁𐤌𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤉𐤃𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤋𐤊𐤌𐤎
לְרַ֥ע וְלֹֽא־ שְׁמַעְתֶּ֥ם אֵלַ֖י נְאֻם־ יְהוָ֑ה לְמַ֧עַן הִכְעִסוּנִי בְּמַעֲשֵׂ֥ה יְדֵיכֶ֖ם לָכֶֽם׃ס lə·ra‘ wə·lō- šə·ma‘·tem ’ê·lay nə·’um- Yah·weh lə·ma·‘an hiḵ·ʿi·sū·nī bə·ma·‘ă·śêh yə·ḏê·ḵem lā·ḵem — WLC · 7

Therefore this is what the LORD of Hosts says: ‘Because you have not obeyed My words,
𐤋𐤊𐤍 𐤊𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤑𐤁𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤉𐤏𐤍 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤋𐤀 𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤕𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤉
לָכֵ֕ן כֹּ֥ה יְהוָ֣ה צְבָא֑וֹת אָמַ֖ר יַ֕עַן אֲשֶׁ֥ר לֹֽא־ שְׁמַעְתֶּ֖ם אֶת־ דְּבָרָֽי׃ lā·ḵên kōh Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ ’ā·mar ya·‘an ’ă·šer lō- šə·ma‘·tem ’eṯ- də·ḇā·rāy — WLC · 8

behold, I will summon… all the families of the north, declares the LORD, and [I will send for] My servant Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, whom I will bring against this land, against its residents, and against all the surrounding nations. So I will devote them to destruction and make them an object of horror and contempt, an everlasting desolation.

הִנְנִ֣י שֹׁלֵ֡חַ וְלָקַחְתִּי֩ אֶת־ כָּל־ מִשְׁפְּח֨וֹת צָפ֜וֹן נְאֻם־ יְהוָ֗ה וְאֶל־ עַבְדִּי֒ נְבֽוּכַדְרֶאצַּ֣ר מֶֽלֶךְ־ בָּבֶל֮ וַהֲבִ֨אֹתִ֜ים עַל־ הַזֹּאת֙ הָאָ֤רֶץ וְעַל־ יֹ֣שְׁבֶ֔יהָ וְעַ֛ל כָּל־ הָאֵ֖לֶּה סָבִ֑יב הַגּוֹיִ֥ם וְהַ֣חֲרַמְתִּ֔ים וְשַׂמְתִּים֙ לְשַׁמָּ֣ה וְלִשְׁרֵקָ֔ה עוֹלָֽם׃ וּלְחָרְב֖וֹת hin·nî šō·lê·aḥ wə·lā·qaḥ·tî ’eṯ- kāl- miš·pə·ḥō·wṯ ṣā·p̄ō·wn nə·’um- Yah·weh wə·’el- ‘aḇ·dî nə·ḇū·ḵaḏ·reṣ·ṣar me·leḵ- bā·ḇel wa·hă·ḇi·’ō·ṯîm ‘al- haz·zōṯ hā·’ā·reṣ wə·‘al- yō·šə·ḇe·hā wə·‘al kāl- hā·’êl·leh sā·ḇîḇ hag·gō·w·yim wə·ha·ḥă·ram·tîm wə·śam·tîm lə·šam·māh wə·liš·rê·qāh ‘ō·w·lām ū·lə·ḥā·rə·ḇō·wṯ — WLC · 9

Moreover, I will banish from them the sounds of joy and gladness, the voices of the bride and bridegroom,… the sound of the millstones, and the light of the lamp.
𐤅𐤄𐤀𐤁𐤃𐤕𐤉 𐤌𐤄𐤌 𐤒𐤅𐤋 𐤔𐤔𐤅𐤍 𐤔𐤌𐤇𐤄 𐤅𐤒𐤅𐤋 𐤊𐤋𐤄 𐤅𐤒𐤅𐤋 𐤇𐤕𐤍 𐤒𐤅𐤋 𐤒𐤅𐤋 𐤓𐤇𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤅𐤓 𐤍𐤓
וְהַאֲבַדְתִּ֣י מֵהֶ֗ם ק֤וֹל שָׂשׂוֹן֙ שִׂמְחָ֔ה וְק֣וֹל כַּלָּ֑ה וְק֣וֹל חָתָ֖ן ק֥וֹל ק֥וֹל רֵחַ֖יִם וְא֥וֹר נֵֽר׃ wə·ha·’ă·ḇaḏ·tî mê·hem qō·wl śā·śō·wn śim·ḥāh wə·qō·wl kal·lāh wə·qō·wl ḥā·ṯān qō·wl qō·wl rê·ḥa·yim wə·’ō·wr nêr — WLC · 10

And this whole land will become a desolate wasteland, and these nations will serve the king of Babylon for seventy years.
𐤄𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤕𐤄 𐤋𐤇𐤓𐤁𐤄 𐤋𐤔𐤌𐤄 𐤄𐤀𐤋𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤂𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤏𐤁𐤃𐤅 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤁𐤁𐤋 𐤔𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤌 𐤔𐤍𐤄
הַזֹּ֔את כָּל־ הָאָ֣רֶץ וְהָֽיְתָה֙ לְחָרְבָּ֖ה לְשַׁמָּ֑ה הָאֵ֛לֶּה אֶת־ הַגּוֹיִ֥ם וְעָ֨בְד֜וּ מֶ֥לֶךְ בָּבֶ֖ל שִׁבְעִ֥ים שָׁנָֽה׃ haz·zōṯ kāl- hā·’ā·reṣ wə·hā·yə·ṯāh lə·ḥā·rə·bāh lə·šam·māh hā·’êl·leh ’eṯ- hag·gō·w·yim wə·‘ā·ḇə·ḏū me·leḵ bā·ḇel šiḇ·‘îm šā·nāh — WLC · 11

But when seventy years are complete, I will punish… the king of Babylon… and that nation, the land of the Chaldeans, for their guilt…, declares the LORD, and I will make it an everlasting desolation.
𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤔𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤌 𐤔𐤍𐤄 𐤊𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤐𐤒𐤃 𐤏𐤋 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤁𐤁𐤋 𐤅𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤄𐤂𐤅𐤉 𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤊𐤔𐤃𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤅𐤍𐤌 𐤅𐤏𐤋 𐤍𐤀𐤌 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤔𐤌𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤕𐤅 𐤏𐤅𐤋𐤌 𐤋𐤔𐤌𐤌𐤅𐤕
וְהָיָ֣ה שִׁבְעִ֣ים שָׁנָ֡ה כִמְלֹ֣אות אֶפְקֹ֣ד עַל־ מֶֽלֶךְ־ בָּבֶל֩ וְעַל־ הַה֧וּא הַגּ֨וֹי אֶ֣רֶץ כַּשְׂדִּ֑ים עֲוֺנָ֖ם וְעַל־ נְאֻם־ יְהוָ֛ה אֶת־ וְשַׂמְתִּ֥י אֹת֖וֹ עוֹלָֽם׃ לְשִֽׁמְמ֥וֹת wə·hā·yāh šiḇ·‘îm šā·nāh ḵim·lō·wṯ ’ep̄·qōḏ ‘al- me·leḵ- bā·ḇel wə·‘al- ha·hū hag·gō·w ’e·reṣ kaś·dîm ‘ă·wō·nām wə·‘al- nə·’um- Yah·weh ’eṯ- wə·śam·tî ’ō·ṯōw ‘ō·w·lām lə·šim·mō·wṯ — WLC · 12

I will bring upon that land all the words I have pronounced against it, all that is written in this book, which Jeremiah has prophesied against all the nations.

וְהֵבֵאיתִי עַל־ הַהִ֔יא אֶת־ הָאָ֣רֶץ כָּל־ דְּבָרַ֖י אֲשֶׁר־ דִּבַּ֣רְתִּי עָלֶ֑יהָ אֵ֤ת כָּל־ הַכָּתוּב֙ הַזֶּ֔ה בַּסֵּ֣פֶר אֲשֶׁר־ יִרְמְיָ֖הוּ נִבָּ֥א עַל־ כָּל־ הַגּוֹיִֽם׃ wə·hē·ḇē·ṯī ‘al- ha·hî ’eṯ- hā·’ā·reṣ kāl- də·ḇā·ray ’ă·šer- dib·bar·tî ‘ā·le·hā ’êṯ kāl- hak·kā·ṯūḇ haz·zeh bas·sê·p̄er ’ă·šer- yir·mə·yā·hū nib·bā ‘al- kāl- hag·gō·w·yim — WLC · 13

For many nations and great kings will enslave them, and I will repay them according to their deeds and according to the work of their hands.’”

- This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, said to me: “Take from My hand this cup of the wine of wrath, and make all the nations to whom I send you drink from it -.

And they will drink and stagger and go out of their minds, because of the sword that I will send among them.”

For behold, I am beginning to bring disaster on the city that bears My Name, so how could you possibly go unpunished…? You will not go unpunished, for I am calling down a sword upon all the inhabitants of the earth, declares the LORD of Hosts.’

So you are to prophesy all these words against them and say to them: ‘The LORD will roar from on high; He will raise His voice from His holy habitation. He will roar loudly… over His pasture; like those who tread the grapes, He will call out with a shout against all the inhabitants of the earth.

The tumult will resound to the ends of the earth because the LORD brings a charge against the nations. He brings judgment on all mankind and puts the wicked to the sword,’” declares the LORD.

This is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Behold! Disaster is spreading from nation to nation; a mighty storm is rising from the ends of the earth.”

Those slain by the LORD on that day will be spread from [one] end of the earth to the other… They will not be mourned,… gathered,… or buried. They will be like dung lying on the ground.

Wail, you shepherds, and cry out; roll in the dust, you leaders of the flock. For the days of your slaughter have come; you will fall and be shattered like fine pottery.
