Jeremiah Buys Hanamel’s Field

This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD in the tenth year of Zedekiah king of Judah, which was the eighteenth… year of Nebuchadnezzar.

At that time the army of the king of Babylon was besieging… Jerusalem, and Jeremiah the prophet was imprisoned in the courtyard of the guard, which was in the palace of the king of Judah.

וְאָ֗ז חֵ֚יל מֶ֣לֶךְ בָּבֶ֔ל צָרִ֖ים עַל־ יְרוּשָׁלִָ֑ם וְיִרְמְיָ֣הוּ הַנָּבִ֗יא הָיָ֤ה כָלוּא֙ בַּחֲצַ֣ר הַמַּטָּרָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֖ר בֵּֽית־ מֶ֥לֶךְ יְהוּדָֽה׃ wə·’āz ḥêl me·leḵ bā·ḇel ṣā·rîm ‘al- yə·rū·šā·lim wə·yir·mə·yā·hū han·nā·ḇî hā·yāh ḵā·lū ba·ḥă·ṣar ham·maṭ·ṭā·rāh ’ă·šer bêṯ- me·leḵ yə·hū·ḏāh — WLC · 2

For Zedekiah king of Judah had imprisoned him, saying: “Why are you prophesying like this? You claim that the LORD says, ‘Behold, I am about to deliver this city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he will capture it.

אֲשֶׁ֣ר צִדְקִיָּ֥הוּ מֶֽלֶךְ־ יְהוּדָ֖ה כְּלָא֔וֹ לֵאמֹ֑ר מַדּוּעַ֩ אַתָּ֨ה נִבָּ֜א כֹּ֚ה לֵאמֹ֗ר יְהוָ֔ה אָמַ֣ר הִנְנִ֨י נֹתֵ֜ן הַזֹּ֛את הָעִ֥יר אֶת־ בְּיַ֥ד מֶֽלֶךְ־ בָּבֶ֖ל וּלְכָדָֽהּ׃ ’ă·šer ṣiḏ·qî·yā·hū me·leḵ- yə·hū·ḏāh kə·lā·’ōw lê·mōr mad·dū·a‘ ’at·tāh nib·bā kōh lê·mōr Yah·weh ’ā·mar hin·nî nō·ṯên haz·zōṯ hā·‘îr ’eṯ- bə·yaḏ me·leḵ- bā·ḇel ū·lə·ḵā·ḏāh — WLC · 3

Zedekiah king of Judah will not escape from the hands of the Chaldeans, but he will surely be delivered… into the hand of the king of Babylon, and will speak with him face to face and see him eye to eye.

וְצִדְקִיָּ֙הוּ֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ יְהוּדָ֔ה לֹ֥א יִמָּלֵ֖ט מִיַּ֣ד הַכַּשְׂדִּ֑ים כִּ֣י הִנָּתֹ֤ן יִנָּתֵן֙ בְּיַ֣ד מֶֽלֶךְ־ בָּבֶ֔ל וְדִבֶּר־ פִּ֣יו עִם־ פִּ֔יו תִּרְאֶֽינָה׃ וְעֵינָ֖יו אֶת־ עֵינוֹ wə·ṣiḏ·qî·yā·hū me·leḵ yə·hū·ḏāh lō yim·mā·lêṭ mî·yaḏ hak·kaś·dîm kî hin·nā·ṯōn yin·nā·ṯên bə·yaḏ me·leḵ- bā·ḇel wə·ḏib·ber- pîw ‘im- pîw tir·’e·nāh wə·‘ê·nāw ’eṯ- ʿē·nō — WLC · 4

He will take Zedekiah to Babylon, where he will stay until I attend to him, declares the LORD. If you fight against the Chaldeans, you will not succeed.’”

יוֹלִ֤ךְ אֶת־ צִדְקִיָּ֙הוּ֙ וּבָבֶ֞ל וְשָׁ֣ם יִֽהְיֶ֔ה עַד־ פָּקְדִ֥י אֹת֖וֹ נְאֻם־ יְהוָ֑ה כִּ֧י תִֽלָּחֲמ֛וּ אֶת־ הַכַּשְׂדִּ֖ים לֹ֥א תַצְלִֽיחוּ׃פ yō·w·liḵ ’eṯ- ṣiḏ·qî·yā·hū ū·ḇā·ḇel wə·šām yih·yeh ‘aḏ- pā·qə·ḏî ’ō·ṯōw nə·’um- Yah·weh kî ṯil·lā·ḥă·mū ’eṯ- hak·kaś·dîm lō ṯaṣ·lî·ḥū — WLC · 5

Jeremiah replied, “The word of the LORD came to me, saying:

יִרְמְיָ֑הוּ וַיֹּ֖אמֶר דְּבַר־ יְהוָ֖ה הָיָ֥ה אֵלַ֥י לֵאמֹֽר׃ yir·mə·yā·hū way·yō·mer də·ḇar- Yah·weh hā·yāh ’ê·lay lê·mōr — WLC · 6

Behold! Hanamel, the son of your uncle Shallum, is coming to you to say, ‘Buy for yourself my field in Anathoth, for you have the right of redemption to buy it.’

הִנֵּ֣ה חֲנַמְאֵ֗ל בֶּן־ דֹּֽדְךָ֔ שַׁלֻּם֙ בָּ֥א אֵלֶ֖יךָ לֵאמֹ֑ר קְנֵ֣ה לְךָ֗ אֶת־ שָׂדִי֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר בַּעֲנָת֔וֹת כִּ֥י לְךָ֛ מִשְׁפַּ֥ט הַגְּאֻלָּ֖ה לִקְנֽוֹת׃ hin·nêh ḥă·nam·’êl ben- dō·ḏə·ḵā šal·lum bā ’ê·le·ḵā lê·mōr qə·nêh lə·ḵā ’eṯ- śā·ḏî ’ă·šer ba·‘ă·nā·ṯō·wṯ kî lə·ḵā miš·paṭ hag·gə·’ul·lāh liq·nō·wṯ — WLC · 7

Then, as the LORD… had said, my cousin… Hanamel came to me in the courtyard of the guard and urged me,… ‘Please buy my field in Anathoth in the land of Benjamin, for you own the right of inheritance and redemption. Buy it for yourself.’” Then I knew that this was the word of the LORD.

יְהוָה֮ אֶל־ כִּדְבַ֣ר בֶּן־ דֹּדִ֜י חֲנַמְאֵ֨ל וַיָּבֹ֣א אֵ֠לַי חֲצַ֣ר הַמַּטָּרָה֒ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלַ֡י נָ֠א אֶת־ קְנֵ֣ה שָׂדִ֨י אֲשֶׁר־ בַּעֲנָת֜וֹת אֲשֶׁ֣ר׀ בְּאֶ֣רֶץ בִּנְיָמִ֗ין כִּֽי־ לְךָ֞ מִשְׁפַּ֧ט הַיְרֻשָּׁ֛ה וּלְךָ֥ הַגְּאֻלָּ֖ה קְנֵה־ לָ֑ךְ וָאֵדַ֕ע כִּ֥י הֽוּא׃ דְבַר־ יְהוָ֖ה Yah·weh ’el- kiḏ·ḇar ben- dō·ḏî ḥă·nam·’êl way·yā·ḇō ’ê·lay ḥă·ṣar ham·maṭ·ṭā·rāh way·yō·mer ’ê·lay nā ’eṯ- qə·nêh śā·ḏî ’ă·šer- ba·‘ă·nā·ṯō·wṯ ’ă·šer bə·’e·reṣ bin·yā·mîn kî- lə·ḵā miš·paṭ hay·ruš·šāh ū·lə·ḵā hag·gə·’ul·lāh qə·nêh- lāḵ wā·’ê·ḏa‘ kî hū ḏə·ḇar- Yah·weh — WLC · 8

So I bought the field… in Anathoth from my cousin… Hanamel, and I weighed out vvv seventeen… shekels of silver.

וָֽאֶקְנֶה֙ אֶת־ הַשָּׂדֶ֔ה מֵאֵ֛ת בַּעֲנָת֑וֹת בֶּן־ דֹּדִ֖י אֲשֶׁ֣ר חֲנַמְאֵ֥ל וָֽאֶשְׁקֲלָה־ לּוֹ֙ אֶת־ הַכֶּ֔סֶף שִׁבְעָ֥ה וַעֲשָׂרָ֥ה שְׁקָלִ֖ים הַכָּֽסֶף׃ wā·’eq·neh ’eṯ- haś·śā·ḏeh mê·’êṯ ba·‘ă·nā·ṯō·wṯ ben- dō·ḏî ’ă·šer ḥă·nam·’êl wā·’eš·qă·lāh- lōw ’eṯ- hak·ke·sep̄ šiḇ·‘āh wa·‘ă·śā·rāh šə·qā·lîm hak·kā·sep̄ — WLC · 9

I signed and sealed the deed, called in witnesses…, and weighed out the silver on the scales.

וָאֶכְתֹּ֤ב וָֽאֶחְתֹּ֔ם בַּסֵּ֙פֶר֙ וָאָעֵ֖ד עֵדִ֑ים וָאֶשְׁקֹ֥ל הַכֶּ֖סֶף בְּמֹאזְנָֽיִם׃ wā·’eḵ·tōḇ wā·’eḥ·tōm bas·sê·p̄er wā·’ā·‘êḏ ‘ê·ḏîm wā·’eš·qōl hak·ke·sep̄ bə·mō·zə·nā·yim — WLC · 10

Then I took the deed of purchase— the sealed copy with its terms and conditions, as well as the open copy—

וָאֶקַּ֖ח אֶת־ סֵ֣פֶר הַמִּקְנָ֑ה אֶת־ הֶֽחָת֛וּם הַמִּצְוָ֥ה וְהַחֻקִּ֖ים וְאֶת־ הַגָּלֽוּי׃ wā·’eq·qaḥ ’eṯ- sê·p̄er ham·miq·nāh ’eṯ- he·ḥā·ṯūm ham·miṣ·wāh wə·ha·ḥuq·qîm wə·’eṯ- hag·gā·lui — WLC · 11

and I gave this deed… to Baruch son of Neriah, the son of Mahseiah, in the sight of my cousin… Hanamel and the witnesses who were signing the purchase… agreement and all the Jews sitting in the courtyard of the guard.

וָאֶתֵּ֞ן אֶת־ הַסֵּ֣פֶר הַמִּקְנָ֗ה אֶל־ בָּר֣וּךְ בֶּן־ נֵרִיָּה֮ בֶּן־ מַחְסֵיָה֒ לְעֵינֵי֙ דֹּדִ֔י וּלְעֵינֵי֙ חֲנַמְאֵ֣ל הָֽעֵדִ֔ים הַכֹּתְבִ֖ים הַמִּקְנָ֑ה לְעֵינֵי֙ בְּסֵ֣פֶר כָּל־ הַיְּהוּדִ֔ים הַיֹּשְׁבִ֖ים בַּחֲצַ֥ר הַמַּטָּרָֽה׃ wā·’et·tên ’eṯ- has·sê·p̄er ham·miq·nāh ’el- bā·rūḵ ben- nê·rî·yāh ben- maḥ·sê·yāh lə·‘ê·nê dō·ḏî ū·lə·‘ê·nê ḥă·nam·’êl hā·‘ê·ḏîm hak·kō·ṯə·ḇîm ham·miq·nāh lə·‘ê·nê bə·sê·p̄er kāl- hay·yə·hū·ḏîm hay·yō·šə·ḇîm ba·ḥă·ṣar ham·maṭ·ṭā·rāh — WLC · 12

In their sight… I instructed Baruch,

לְעֵינֵיהֶ֖ם לֵאמֹֽר׃ וָֽאֲצַוֶּה֙ אֶת בָּר֔וּךְ lə·‘ê·nê·hem lê·mōr wā·’ă·ṣaw·weh ʾɛṯ bā·rūḵ — WLC · 13

“This is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: Take these deeds— both the sealed copy and the open copy of the deed of purchase— and put them in a clay jar to preserve them for a long time.

כֹּֽה־ יְהוָ֨ה צְבָא֜וֹת אֱלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל אָמַר֩ לָק֣וֹחַ אֶת־ הָאֵ֡לֶּה אֵ֣ת הַסְּפָרִ֣ים הֶחָת֗וּם וְאֵ֨ת הַזֶּ֔ה הַגָּלוּי֙ סֵ֤פֶר הַזֶּ֜ה וְאֵ֣ת סֵפֶר֩ הַמִּקְנָ֨ה וּנְתַתָּ֖ם חָ֑רֶשׂ בִּכְלִי־ לְמַ֥עַן יַעַמְד֖וּ רַבִּֽים׃ס יָמִ֥ים kōh- Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ ’ĕ·lō·hê yiś·rā·’êl ’ā·mar lā·qō·w·aḥ ’eṯ- hā·’êl·leh ’êṯ has·sə·p̄ā·rîm he·ḥā·ṯūm wə·’êṯ haz·zeh hag·gā·lui sê·p̄er haz·zeh wə·’êṯ sê·p̄er ham·miq·nāh ū·nə·ṯat·tām ḥā·reś biḵ·lî- lə·ma·‘an ya·‘am·ḏū rab·bîm yā·mîm — WLC · 14

For this is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: Houses, fields, and vineyards will again be bought in this land.”

They came in and possessed it, but they did not obey Your voice or walk in Your law. They failed to perform… all that You commanded them to do, and so You have brought upon them all this disaster.

See how the siege ramps are mounted against the city to capture it. And by sword and famine and plague, the city has been given into the hands of the Chaldeans who are fighting against it. What You have spoken has happened, as You now see!

And the Chaldeans who are fighting against this city will come in, set [it] on fire -, and burn it, along with the houses of those who provoked Me to anger by burning incense to Baal on their rooftops and by pouring out drink offerings to other gods -.

For this city has aroused My wrath… and fury… from the day it was built until now… Therefore I will remove it from My presence

because of all the evil the children of Israel and of Judah have done to provoke Me to anger— they, their kings, their officials, their priests and prophets, the men of Judah, and the residents of Jerusalem.

They have turned their backs to Me and not their faces. Though I taught them again and again…, they would not listen or respond to discipline.

They have built the high places of Baal in the Valley of Ben-hinnom to make their sons… and daughters pass through - the fire to Molech— something I never commanded them, nor had it ever entered… My mind, that they should commit such… an abomination and cause Judah to sin. -

A Promise of Restoration

Now therefore, about this city of which you say, ‘It will be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon by sword and famine and plague,’ this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says:

vvv I will surely gather [My people] from all the lands to which I have banished them… in My furious anger… and great wrath, and I will return them to this place and make them dwell in safety.

They will be My people, and I will be their God.

I will give them one heart and one way, so that they will always fear Me -… for their own good and for the good of their children after them.

I will make an everlasting covenant with them: I will never turn away from doing good to them, - and I will put My fear in their hearts, so that they will never turn away from Me.

Yes, I will rejoice in doing them good -, and I will faithfully plant them in this land with all My heart and with all My soul.

And fields will be bought in this land about which you are saying, ‘It is a desolation, without man or beast; it has been delivered into the hands of the Chaldeans.’

Fields will be purchased with silver, and deeds will be signed, sealed, vvv and witnessed in the land of Benjamin, in the areas surrounding Jerusalem, and in the cities of Judah— the cities of the hill country, the foothills, [and] the Negev— because I will restore them from captivity, declares the LORD.”
