Chapter 35
The Obedience of the Rechabites
1
This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD in the days of Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah…:

הַדָּבָ֛ר אֲשֶׁר־ הָיָ֥ה אֶֽל־ יִרְמְיָ֖הוּ מֵאֵ֣ת יְהוָ֑ה בִּימֵ֨י יְהוֹיָקִ֧ים בֶּן־ יֹאשִׁיָּ֛הוּ מֶ֥לֶךְ יְהוּדָ֖ה לֵאמֹֽר׃ had·dā·ḇār ’ă·šer- hā·yāh ’el- yir·mə·yā·hū mê·’êṯ Yah·weh bî·mê yə·hō·w·yā·qîm ben- yō·šî·yā·hū me·leḵ yə·hū·ḏāh lê·mōr — WLC · 1

“Go to the house of the Rechabites, speak to them, and bring them to one of the chambers of the house of the LORD to offer them a drink of wine.”

הָלוֹךְ֮ אֶל־ בֵּ֣ית הָרֵכָבִים֒ וְדִבַּרְתָּ֣ אוֹתָ֔ם וַהֲבִֽאוֹתָם֙ אֶל־ אַחַ֖ת הַלְּשָׁכ֑וֹת בֵּ֣ית יְהוָ֔ה וְהִשְׁקִיתָ֥ אוֹתָ֖ם יָֽיִן׃ hā·lō·wḵ ’el- bêṯ hā·rê·ḵā·ḇîm wə·ḏib·bar·tā ’ō·w·ṯām wa·hă·ḇi·’ō·w·ṯām ’el- ’a·ḥaṯ hal·lə·šā·ḵō·wṯ bêṯ Yah·weh wə·hiš·qî·ṯā ’ō·w·ṯām yā·yin — WLC · 2

So I took Jaazaniah son of Jeremiah, the son of Habazziniah, and his brothers and all his sons— the entire house of the Rechabites—
𐤅𐤀𐤒𐤇 𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤀𐤆𐤍𐤉𐤄 𐤁𐤍 𐤉𐤓𐤌𐤉𐤄𐤅 𐤁𐤍 𐤇𐤁𐤑𐤍𐤉𐤄 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤇𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤊𐤋 𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤊𐤋 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤄𐤓𐤊𐤁𐤉𐤌
וָאֶקַּ֞ח אֶת־ יַאֲזַנְיָ֤ה בֶֽן־ יִרְמְיָ֙הוּ֙ בֶּן־ חֲבַצִּנְיָ֔ה וְאֶת־ אֶחָ֖יו וְאֶת־ כָּל־ בָּנָ֑יו וְאֵ֖ת כָּל־ בֵּ֥ית הָרֵכָבִֽים׃ wā·’eq·qaḥ ’eṯ- ya·’ă·zan·yāh ḇen- yir·mə·yā·hū ben- ḥă·ḇaṣ·ṣin·yāh wə·’eṯ- ’e·ḥāw wə·’eṯ- kāl- bā·nāw wə·’êṯ kāl- bêṯ hā·rê·ḵā·ḇîm — WLC · 3

and I brought them into the house of the LORD, to a chamber occupied by the sons of Hanan son of Igdaliah, a man of God. This [room was] near the chamber of the officials, which was above the chamber of Maaseiah son of Shallum the doorkeeper…
𐤅𐤀𐤁𐤀 𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋 𐤋𐤔𐤊𐤕 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤇𐤍𐤍 𐤁𐤍 𐤉𐤂𐤃𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤅 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤄𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤀𐤑𐤋 𐤋𐤔𐤊𐤕 𐤄𐤔𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤌𐤌𐤏𐤋 𐤋𐤋𐤔𐤊𐤕 𐤌𐤏𐤔𐤉𐤄𐤅 𐤁𐤍 𐤔𐤋𐤌 𐤔𐤌𐤓 𐤄𐤎𐤐
וָאָבִ֤א אֹתָם֙ בֵּ֣ית יְהוָ֔ה אֶל־ לִשְׁכַּ֗ת בְּנֵ֛י חָנָ֥ן בֶּן־ יִגְדַּלְיָ֖הוּ אִ֣ישׁ הָאֱלֹהִ֑ים אֲשֶׁר־ אֵ֙צֶל֙ לִשְׁכַּ֣ת הַשָּׂרִ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֣ר מִמַּ֗עַל לְלִשְׁכַּ֛ת מַעֲשֵׂיָ֥הוּ בֶן־ שַׁלֻּ֖ם שֹׁמֵ֥ר הַסַּֽף׃ wā·’ā·ḇi ’ō·ṯām bêṯ Yah·weh ’el- liš·kaṯ bə·nê ḥā·nān ben- yiḡ·dal·yā·hū ’îš hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm ’ă·šer- ’ê·ṣel liš·kaṯ haś·śā·rîm ’ă·šer mim·ma·‘al lə·liš·kaṯ ma·‘ă·śê·yā·hū ḇen- šal·lum šō·mêr has·sap̄ — WLC · 4

Then I set pitchers full of wine and [some] cups before the men of the house of the Rechabites, and I said to them, “Drink some wine.”
𐤅𐤀𐤕𐤍 𐤂𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤉𐤍 𐤅𐤊𐤎𐤅𐤕 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤄𐤓𐤊𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤔𐤕𐤅 𐤉𐤉𐤍
וָאֶתֵּ֞ן גְּבִעִ֛ים מְלֵאִ֥ים יַ֖יִן וְכֹס֑וֹת לִפְנֵ֣י׀ בְּנֵ֣י בֵית־ הָרֵכָבִ֗ים וָאֹמַ֥ר אֲלֵיהֶ֖ם שְׁתוּ־ יָֽיִן׃ wā·’et·tên gə·ḇi·‘îm mə·lê·’îm ya·yin wə·ḵō·sō·wṯ lip̄·nê bə·nê ḇêṯ- hā·rê·ḵā·ḇîm wā·’ō·mar ’ă·lê·hem šə·ṯū- yā·yin — WLC · 5

“We do not drink wine,” they replied, “for our forefather Jonadab son of Rechab commanded us…, ‘Neither you nor your descendants are ever to… drink wine.
𐤋𐤀 𐤍𐤔𐤕𐤄 𐤉𐤉𐤍 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤅 𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤉𐤅𐤍𐤃𐤁 𐤁𐤍 𐤓𐤊𐤁 𐤑𐤅𐤄 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤅𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤋𐤀 𐤏𐤃 𐤏𐤅𐤋𐤌 𐤕𐤔𐤕𐤅 𐤉𐤉𐤍
לֹ֣א נִשְׁתֶּה־ יָּ֑יִן וַיֹּאמְר֖וּ כִּי֩ אָבִ֗ינוּ יוֹנָדָ֨ב בֶּן־ רֵכָ֜ב צִוָּ֤ה עָלֵ֙ינוּ֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר אַתֶּ֥ם וּבְנֵיכֶ֖ם לֹ֧א עַד־ עוֹלָֽם׃ תִשְׁתּוּ־ יַ֛יִן lō niš·teh- yā·yin way·yō·mə·rū kî ’ā·ḇî·nū yō·w·nā·ḏāḇ ben- rê·ḵāḇ ṣiw·wāh ‘ā·lê·nū lê·mōr ’at·tem ū·ḇə·nê·ḵem lō ‘aḏ- ‘ō·w·lām ṯiš·tū- ya·yin — WLC · 6

Nor are you ever to build a house [or] sow seed [or] plant a vineyard. Those things are not for you. Instead, you must live in tents all your lives, so that you may live a long time in… the land where you wander…’

לֹֽא־ תִבְנ֗וּ וּבַ֣יִת לֹֽא־ תִזְרָ֙עוּ֙ וְזֶ֤רַע לֹֽא־ תִטָּ֔עוּ וְכֶ֣רֶם יִֽהְיֶ֖ה וְלֹ֥א לָכֶ֑ם כִּ֠י תֵּֽשְׁבוּ֙ בָּאֳהָלִ֤ים כָּל־ יְמֵיכֶ֔ם לְמַ֨עַן תִּֽחְי֜וּ רַבִּים֙ יָמִ֤ים עַל־ פְּנֵ֣י הָאֲדָמָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר אַתֶּ֖ם גָּרִ֥ים שָֽׁם׃ lō- ṯiḇ·nū ū·ḇa·yiṯ lō- ṯiz·rā·‘ū wə·ze·ra‘ lō- ṯiṭ·ṭā·‘ū wə·ḵe·rem yih·yeh wə·lō lā·ḵem kî tê·šə·ḇū bā·’o·hā·lîm kāl- yə·mê·ḵem lə·ma·‘an tiḥ·yū rab·bîm yā·mîm ‘al- pə·nê hā·’ă·ḏā·māh ’ă·šer ’at·tem gā·rîm šām — WLC · 7

And we have obeyed the voice of our forefather Jonadab son of Rechab in all he commanded us. So we have not drunk wine all our lives— neither we [nor] our wives [nor] our sons and daughters.
𐤅𐤍𐤔𐤌𐤏 𐤁𐤒𐤅𐤋 𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤍𐤃𐤁 𐤁𐤍 𐤓𐤊𐤁 𐤋𐤊𐤋 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤑𐤅𐤍𐤅 𐤋𐤁𐤋𐤕𐤉 𐤔𐤕𐤅𐤕 𐤉𐤉𐤍 𐤊𐤋 𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤀𐤍𐤇𐤍𐤅 𐤍𐤔𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤅𐤁𐤍𐤕𐤉𐤍𐤅
וַנִּשְׁמַ֗ע בְּק֨וֹל אָבִ֔ינוּ יְהוֹנָדָ֤ב בֶּן־ רֵכָב֙ לְכֹ֖ל אֲשֶׁ֣ר צִוָּ֑נוּ לְבִלְתִּ֤י שְׁתֽוֹת־ יַ֙יִן֙ כָּל־ יָמֵ֔ינוּ אֲנַ֣חְנוּ נָשֵׁ֔ינוּ בָּנֵ֖ינוּ וּבְנֹתֵֽינוּ׃ wan·niš·ma‘ bə·qō·wl ’ā·ḇî·nū yə·hō·w·nā·ḏāḇ ben- rê·ḵāḇ lə·ḵōl ’ă·šer ṣiw·wā·nū lə·ḇil·tî šə·ṯō·wṯ- ya·yin kāl- yā·mê·nū ’ă·naḥ·nū nā·šê·nū bā·nê·nū ū·ḇə·nō·ṯê·nū — WLC · 8

Nor have we built houses in which to live, vvv and we have not owned any vineyards or fields or crops.

וּלְבִלְתִּ֛י בְּנ֥וֹת בָּתִּ֖ים לְשִׁבְתֵּ֑נוּ לֹ֥א יִֽהְיֶה־ לָּֽנוּ׃ וְכֶ֧רֶם וְשָׂדֶ֛ה וָזֶ֖רַע ū·lə·ḇil·tî bə·nō·wṯ bāt·tîm lə·šiḇ·tê·nū lō yih·yeh- lā·nū wə·ḵe·rem wə·śā·ḏeh wā·ze·ra‘ — WLC · 9

But we have lived in tents and have obeyed and done exactly as our forefather Jonadab commanded us.

וַנֵּ֖שֶׁב בָּֽאֳהָלִ֑ים וַנִּשְׁמַ֣ע וַנַּ֔עַשׂ כְּכֹ֥ל אֲשֶׁר־ אָבִֽינוּ׃ יוֹנָדָ֥ב צִוָּ֖נוּ wan·nê·šeḇ bā·’o·hā·lîm wan·niš·ma‘ wan·na·‘aś kə·ḵōl ’ă·šer- ’ā·ḇî·nū yō·w·nā·ḏāḇ ṣiw·wā·nū — WLC · 10

So when Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon marched into the land, we said: ‘Come, let us go into Jerusalem to escape the armies of the Chaldeans… and the Arameans.’ So we have remained in Jerusalem.”

וַיְהִ֗י נְבוּכַדְרֶאצַּ֥ר מֶֽלֶךְ־ בָּבֶל֮ בַּעֲל֨וֹת אֶל־ הָאָרֶץ֒ וַנֹּ֗אמֶר בֹּ֚אוּ וְנָב֣וֹא יְרוּשָׁלִַ֔ם מִפְּנֵי֙ חֵ֣יל הַכַּשְׂדִּ֔ים וּמִפְּנֵ֖י חֵ֣יל אֲרָ֑ם וַנֵּ֖שֶׁב בִּירוּשָׁלִָֽם׃פ way·hî nə·ḇū·ḵaḏ·reṣ·ṣar me·leḵ- bā·ḇel ba·‘ă·lō·wṯ ’el- hā·’ā·reṣ wan·nō·mer bō·’ū wə·nā·ḇō·w yə·rū·šā·lim mip·pə·nê ḥêl hak·kaś·dîm ū·mip·pə·nê ḥêl ’ă·rām wan·nê·šeḇ bî·rū·šā·lim — WLC · 11
Judah Rebuked

Then the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah…:

דְּבַר־ יְהוָ֔ה וַֽיְהִי֙ אֶֽל־ יִרְמְיָ֖הוּ לֵאמֹֽר׃ də·ḇar- Yah·weh way·hî ’el- yir·mə·yā·hū lê·mōr — WLC · 12

“This is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: Go and tell the men of Judah and the residents of Jerusalem: ‘Will you not accept discipline and obey… My words?’ declares the LORD.

כֹּֽה־ יְהוָ֤ה צְבָאוֹת֙ אֱלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל אָמַ֞ר הָלֹ֤ךְ וְאָֽמַרְתָּ֙ לְאִ֣ישׁ יְהוּדָ֔ה וּלְיֽוֹשְׁבֵ֖י יְרֽוּשָׁלִָ֑ם הֲל֨וֹא תִקְח֥וּ מוּסָ֛ר לִשְׁמֹ֥עַ אֶל־ דְּבָרַ֖י נְאֻם־ יְהוָֽה׃ kōh- Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ ’ĕ·lō·hê yiś·rā·’êl ’ā·mar hā·lōḵ wə·’ā·mar·tā lə·’îš yə·hū·ḏāh ū·lə·yō·wō·šə·ḇê yə·rū·šā·lim hă·lō·w ṯiq·ḥū mū·sār liš·mō·a‘ ’el- də·ḇā·ray nə·’um- Yah·weh — WLC · 13

The words of Jonadab son of Rechab have been carried out. He commanded his sons not to drink wine, and they have not drunk [it] to this very day because they have obeyed the command of their forefather. But I have spoken to you again and again…, and you have not obeyed Me…!

דִּבְרֵ֣י יְהוֹנָדָ֣ב בֶּן־ רֵ֠כָב הוּקַ֡ם אֶת־ אֲשֶׁר־ צִוָּ֨ה אֶת־ בָּנָ֜יו לְבִלְתִּ֣י שְׁתֽוֹת־ יַ֗יִן וְלֹ֤א שָׁתוּ֙ עַד־ הַזֶּ֔ה הַיּ֣וֹם כִּ֣י שָֽׁמְע֔וּ אֵ֖ת מִצְוַ֣ת אֲבִיהֶ֑ם וְאָ֨נֹכִ֜י דִּבַּ֤רְתִּי אֲלֵיכֶם֙ הַשְׁכֵּ֣ם וְדַבֵּ֔ר וְלֹ֥א שְׁמַעְתֶּ֖ם אֵלָֽי׃ diḇ·rê yə·hō·w·nā·ḏāḇ ben- rê·ḵāḇ hū·qam ’eṯ- ’ă·šer- ṣiw·wāh ’eṯ- bā·nāw lə·ḇil·tî šə·ṯō·wṯ- ya·yin wə·lō šā·ṯū ‘aḏ- haz·zeh hay·yō·wm kî šā·mə·‘ū ’êṯ miṣ·waṯ ’ă·ḇî·hem wə·’ā·nō·ḵî dib·bar·tî ’ă·lê·ḵem haš·kêm wə·ḏab·bêr wə·lō šə·ma‘·tem ’ê·lāy — WLC · 14

Again and again I have sent you all My servants the prophets, proclaiming: ‘Turn now, each of you, from your wicked ways, and correct your actions. Do not go after… other gods to serve them. Live in the land that I have given to you and your fathers.’ But you have not inclined your ear [or] listened to Me.

Therefore this is what the LORD God of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: ‘Behold, I will bring to Judah and to all the residents of Jerusalem all the disaster I have pronounced against them, because I have spoken to them but they have not obeyed, and I have called to them but they have not answered.’”

Then Jeremiah said to the house of the Rechabites: “This is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: ‘Because you have obeyed… the command of your forefather Jonadab and have kept all his commandments and have done all that he charged you to do, -
