Chapter 4

A Plea to Return

1

“If you will return, O Israel, return to Me,” declares the LORD. “If you will remove your detestable idols from My sight and no longer waver,

𐤀𐤌 𐤕𐤔𐤅𐤁 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤕𐤔𐤅𐤁 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤍𐤀𐤌 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤀𐤌 𐤕𐤎𐤉𐤓 𐤔𐤒𐤅𐤑𐤉𐤊 𐤌𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤕𐤍𐤅𐤃

אִם־ תָּשׁ֨וּב יִשְׂרָאֵ֧ל׀ תָּשׁ֑וּב אֵלַ֖י נְאֻם־ יְהוָ֛ה וְאִם־ תָּסִ֧יר שִׁקּוּצֶ֛יךָ מִפָּנַ֖י וְלֹ֥א תָנֽוּד׃ ’im- tā·šūḇ yiś·rā·’êl tā·šūḇ ’ê·lay nə·’um- Yah·weh wə·’im- tā·sîr šiq·qū·ṣe·ḵā mip·pā·nay wə·lō ṯā·nūḏWLC · 1

and if you can swear, ‘As surely as the LORD lives,’ in truth, in justice, and in righteousness, then the nations will be blessed by Him, and in Him they will glory.”

𐤅𐤍𐤔𐤁𐤏𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤇𐤉 𐤁𐤀𐤌𐤕 𐤁𐤌𐤔𐤐𐤈 𐤅𐤁𐤑𐤃𐤒𐤄 𐤂𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤕𐤁𐤓𐤊𐤅 𐤅𐤁𐤅 𐤁𐤅 𐤉𐤕𐤄𐤋𐤋𐤅𐤎

וְנִשְׁבַּ֙עְתָּ֙ יְהוָ֔ה חַי־ בֶּאֱמֶ֖ת בְּמִשְׁפָּ֣ט וּבִצְדָקָ֑ה גּוֹיִ֖ם וְהִתְבָּ֥רְכוּ וּב֥וֹ ב֛וֹ יִתְהַלָּֽלוּ׃ס wə·niš·ba‘·tā Yah·weh ḥay- be·’ĕ·meṯ bə·miš·pāṭ ū·ḇiṣ·ḏā·qāh gō·w·yim wə·hiṯ·bā·rə·ḵū ū·ḇōw ḇōw yiṯ·hal·lā·lūWLC · 2

For this is what the LORD says to the men of Judah and Jerusalem: “Break up your unplowed ground, and do not sow among the thorns.

𐤊𐤉 𐤊𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤋𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤅𐤋𐤉𐤓𐤅𐤔𐤋𐤌 𐤍𐤉𐤓𐤅 𐤋𐤊𐤌 𐤍𐤉𐤓 𐤅𐤀𐤋 𐤕𐤆𐤓𐤏𐤅 𐤀𐤋 𐤒𐤅𐤑𐤉𐤌

כִּי־ כֹ֣ה׀ יְהֹוָ֗ה אָמַ֣ר לְאִ֤ישׁ יְהוּדָה֙ וְלִיר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔ם נִ֥ירוּ לָכֶ֖ם נִ֑יר וְאַֽל־ תִּזְרְע֖וּ אֶל־ קוֹצִֽים׃ kî- ḵōh Yah·weh ’ā·mar lə·’îš yə·hū·ḏāh wə·lî·rū·šā·lim nî·rū lā·ḵem nîr wə·’al- tiz·rə·‘ū ’el- qō·w·ṣîmWLC · 3

Circumcise yourselves to the LORD, and remove the foreskins of your hearts, O men of Judah and people of Jerusalem. Otherwise, My wrath will break out like fire and burn with no one to extinguish it, because of your evil deeds.”

Disaster from the North

Announce in Judah, proclaim in Jerusalem, and say: “Blow the ram’s horn throughout the land. Cry aloud… and say, ‘Assemble yourselves and let us flee to the fortified cities.’

הַגִּ֣ידוּ בִֽיהוּדָ֗ה הַשְׁמִ֔יעוּ וּבִירוּשָׁלִַ֙ם֙ וְאִמְר֕וּ וְתִקְעוּ שׁוֹפָ֖ר בָּאָ֑רֶץ קִרְא֤וּ מַלְאוּ֙ וְאִמְר֔וּ הֵאָסְפ֥וּ וְנָב֖וֹאָה אֶל־ הַמִּבְצָֽר׃ עָרֵ֥י hag·gî·ḏū ḇî·hū·ḏāh haš·mî·‘ū ū·ḇî·rū·šā·lim wə·’im·rū wə·ṯiq·ʿū šō·w·p̄ār bā·’ā·reṣ qir·’ū mal·’ū wə·’im·rū hê·’ā·sə·p̄ū wə·nā·ḇō·w·’āh ’el- ham·miḇ·ṣār ‘ā·rêWLC · 5

Raise a signal flag toward Zion. Seek refuge! Do not delay! For I am bringing disaster from the north, and terrible destruction.

שְׂאוּ־ נֵ֣ס צִיּ֔וֹנָה הָעִ֖יזוּ אַֽל־ תַּעֲמֹ֑דוּ כִּ֣י אָנֹכִ֛י מֵבִ֥יא רָעָ֗ה מִצָּפ֖וֹן גָּדֽוֹל׃ וְשֶׁ֥בֶר śə·’ū- nês ṣî·yō·w·nāh hā·‘î·zū ’al- ta·‘ă·mō·ḏū kî ’ā·nō·ḵî mê·ḇî rā·‘āh miṣ·ṣā·p̄ō·wn gā·ḏō·wl wə·še·ḇerWLC · 6

A lion has gone up from his thicket, and a destroyer of nations has set out. He has left his lair to lay waste your land. Your cities will be reduced to ruins and lie uninhabited.

𐤀𐤓𐤉𐤄 𐤏𐤋𐤄 𐤌𐤎𐤁𐤊𐤅 𐤅𐤌𐤔𐤇𐤉𐤕 𐤂𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤍𐤎𐤏 𐤉𐤑𐤀 𐤌𐤌𐤒𐤌𐤅 𐤋𐤔𐤅𐤌 𐤋𐤔𐤌𐤄 𐤀𐤓𐤑𐤊 𐤏𐤓𐤉𐤊 𐤌𐤀𐤉𐤍 𐤕𐤑𐤉𐤍𐤄 𐤉𐤅𐤔𐤁

אַרְיֵה֙ עָלָ֤ה מִֽסֻּבְּכ֔וֹ וּמַשְׁחִ֣ית גּוֹיִ֔ם נָסַ֖ע יָצָ֣א מִמְּקֹמ֑וֹ לָשׂ֤וּם לְשַׁמָּ֔ה אַרְצֵךְ֙ עָרַ֥יִךְ מֵאֵ֥ין תִּצֶּ֖ינָה יוֹשֵֽׁב׃ ’ar·yêh ‘ā·lāh mis·sub·bə·ḵōw ū·maš·ḥîṯ gō·w·yim nā·sa‘ yā·ṣā mim·mə·qō·mōw lā·śūm lə·šam·māh ’ar·ṣêḵ ‘ā·ra·yiḵ mê·’ên tiṣ·ṣe·nāh yō·wō·šêḇWLC · 7

So… put on sackcloth, mourn and wail, for the fierce anger of the LORD has not turned away from us.”

עַל־ זֹ֛את חִגְר֥וּ שַׂקִּ֖ים סִפְד֣וּ וְהֵילִ֑ילוּ כִּ֥י חֲר֥וֹן אַף־ יְהֹוָ֖ה לֹא־ שָׁ֛ב מִמֶּֽנּוּ׃פ ‘al- zōṯ ḥiḡ·rū śaq·qîm sip̄·ḏū wə·hê·lî·lū kî ḥă·rō·wn ’ap̄- Yah·weh lō- šāḇ mim·men·nūWLC · 8

  • “In that day,” declares the LORD, “the king… and officials will lose their courage. The priests will tremble in fear, and the prophets will be astounded.”

וְהָיָ֤ה הַהוּא֙ בַיּוֹם־ נְאֻם־ יְהוָ֔ה הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ וְלֵ֣ב הַשָּׂרִ֑ים יֹאבַ֥ד לֵב־ הַכֹּ֣הֲנִ֔ים וְנָשַׁ֙מּוּ֙ וְהַנְּבִיאִ֖ים יִתְמָֽהוּ׃ wə·hā·yāh ha·hū ḇay·yō·wm- nə·’um- Yah·weh ham·me·leḵ wə·lêḇ haś·śā·rîm yō·ḇaḏ lêḇ- hak·kō·hă·nîm wə·nā·šam·mū wə·han·nə·ḇî·’îm yiṯ·mā·hūWLC · 9

Then I said, “Ah, Lord GOD, how completely You have deceived… this people and Jerusalem by saying, ‘You will have peace,’ while a sword is at our throats.”

וָאֹמַ֞ר אֲהָ֣הּ׀ אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֗ה אָכֵן֩ הַשֵּׁ֨א הִשֵּׁ֜אתָ הַזֶּה֙ לָעָ֤ם וְלִירוּשָׁלִַ֣ם לֵאמֹ֔ר יִהְיֶ֣ה לָכֶ֑ם וְנָגְעָ֥ה שָׁל֖וֹם חֶ֖רֶב עַד־ הַנָּֽפֶשׁ׃ wā·’ō·mar ’ă·hāh ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh ’ā·ḵên haš·šê hiš·šê·ṯā haz·zeh lā·‘ām wə·lî·rū·šā·lim lê·mōr yih·yeh lā·ḵem wə·nā·ḡə·‘āh šā·lō·wm ḥe·reḇ ‘aḏ- han·nā·p̄ešWLC · 10

At that time it will be said to this people and to Jerusalem, “A searing wind from the barren heights in the desert blows toward the daughter of My people, but not to winnow… or to sift;

𐤄𐤄𐤉𐤀 𐤁𐤏𐤕 𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤄𐤆𐤄 𐤋𐤏𐤌 𐤅𐤋𐤉𐤓𐤅𐤔𐤋𐤌 𐤑𐤇 𐤓𐤅𐤇 𐤔𐤐𐤉𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤌𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤃𐤓𐤊 𐤁𐤕 𐤏𐤌𐤉 𐤋𐤅𐤀 𐤋𐤆𐤓𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤋𐤅𐤀 𐤋𐤄𐤁𐤓

הַהִ֗יא בָּעֵ֣ת יֵאָמֵ֤ר הַזֶּה֙ לָֽעָם־ וְלִיר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔ם צַ֤ח ר֣וּחַ שְׁפָיִים֙ בַּמִּדְבָּ֔ר דֶּ֖רֶךְ בַּת־ עַמִּ֑י ל֥וֹא לִזְר֖וֹת וְל֥וֹא לְהָבַֽר׃ ha·hî bā·‘êṯ yê·’ā·mêr haz·zeh lā·‘ām- wə·lî·rū·šā·lim ṣaḥ rū·aḥ šə·p̄ā·yîm bam·miḏ·bār de·reḵ baṯ- ‘am·mî lō·w liz·rō·wṯ wə·lō·w lə·hā·ḇarWLC · 11

a wind too strong for that comes from Me. Now I also pronounce judgments against them.”

ר֧וּחַ מָלֵ֛א מֵאֵ֖לֶּה יָ֣בוֹא לִ֑י עַתָּ֕ה אֲנִ֛י גַּם־ אֲדַבֵּ֥ר מִשְׁפָּטִ֖ים אוֹתָֽם׃ rū·aḥ mā·lê mê·’êl·leh yā·ḇō·w lî ‘at·tāh ’ă·nî gam- ’ă·ḏab·bêr miš·pā·ṭîm ’ō·w·ṯāmWLC · 12

Behold, he advances like the clouds, his chariots like the whirlwind. His horses are swifter than eagles. Woe to us, for we are ruined!

𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤉𐤏𐤋𐤄 𐤊𐤏𐤍𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤓𐤊𐤁𐤅𐤕𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤊𐤎𐤅𐤐𐤄 𐤎𐤅𐤎𐤉𐤅 𐤒𐤋𐤅 𐤌𐤍𐤔𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤅𐤉 𐤋𐤍𐤅 𐤊𐤉 𐤔𐤃𐤃𐤍𐤅

הִנֵּ֣ה׀ יַעֲלֶ֗ה כַּעֲנָנִ֣ים מַרְכְּבוֹתָ֔יו וְכַסּוּפָה֙ סוּסָ֑יו קַלּ֥וּ מִנְּשָׁרִ֖ים א֥וֹי לָ֖נוּ כִּ֥י שֻׁדָּֽדְנוּ׃ hin·nêh ya·‘ă·leh ka·‘ă·nā·nîm mar·kə·ḇō·w·ṯāw wə·ḵas·sū·p̄āh sū·sāw qal·lū min·nə·šā·rîm ’ō·w lā·nū kî šud·dā·ḏə·nūWLC · 13

Wash the evil from your heart, O Jerusalem, so that you may be saved. How long… will you harbor wicked thoughts within you?

כַּבְּסִ֨י מֵרָעָ֤ה לִבֵּךְ֙ יְר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔ם לְמַ֖עַן תִּוָּשֵׁ֑עִי עַד־ מָתַ֛י תָּלִ֥ין אוֹנֵֽךְ׃ מַחְשְׁב֥וֹת בְּקִרְבֵּ֖ךְ kab·bə·sî mê·rā·‘āh lib·bêḵ yə·rū·šā·lim lə·ma·‘an tiw·wā·šê·‘î ‘aḏ- mā·ṯay tā·lîn ’ō·w·nêḵ maḥ·šə·ḇō·wṯ bə·qir·bêḵWLC · 14

For a voice resounds from Dan, proclaiming disaster from the hills of Ephraim.

𐤊𐤉 𐤒𐤅𐤋 𐤌𐤂𐤉𐤃 𐤌𐤃𐤍 𐤅𐤌𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤏 𐤀𐤅𐤍 𐤌𐤄𐤓 𐤀𐤐𐤓𐤉𐤌

כִּ֛י ק֥וֹל מַגִּ֖יד מִדָּ֑ן וּמַשְׁמִ֥יעַ אָ֖וֶן מֵהַ֥ר אֶפְרָֽיִם׃ kî qō·wl mag·gîḏ mid·dān ū·maš·mî·a‘ ’ā·wen mê·har ’ep̄·rā·yimWLC · 15

Warn the nations now! Proclaim to Jerusalem: “A besieging army comes from a distant land; they raise their voices against the cities of Judah.

𐤄𐤆𐤊𐤉𐤓𐤅 𐤋𐤂𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤄𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤏𐤅 𐤏𐤋 𐤉𐤓𐤅𐤔𐤋𐤌 𐤍𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤀𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤌𐤓𐤇𐤒 𐤌𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤍𐤅 𐤒𐤅𐤋𐤌 𐤏𐤋 𐤏𐤓𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄

הַזְכִּ֣ירוּ לַגּוֹיִ֗ם הִנֵּה֙ הַשְׁמִ֣יעוּ עַל־ יְרוּשָׁלִַ֔ם נֹצְרִ֥ים בָּאִ֖ים הַמֶּרְחָ֑ק מֵאֶ֣רֶץ וַֽיִּתְּנ֛וּ קוֹלָֽם׃ עַל־ עָרֵ֥י יְהוּדָ֖ה haz·kî·rū lag·gō·w·yim hin·nêh haš·mî·‘ū ‘al- yə·rū·šā·lim nō·ṣə·rîm bā·’îm ham·mer·ḥāq mê·’e·reṣ way·yit·tə·nū qō·w·lām ‘al- ‘ā·rê yə·hū·ḏāhWLC · 16

They surround her like men guarding a field,… because she has rebelled against Me,” declares the LORD.

מִסָּבִ֑יב כְּשֹׁמְרֵ֣י שָׂדַ֔י הָי֥וּ עָלֶ֖יהָ כִּי־ אֹתִ֥י מָרָ֖תָה נְאֻם־ יְהוָֽה׃ mis·sā·ḇîḇ kə·šō·mə·rê śā·ḏay hā·yū ‘ā·le·hā kî- ’ō·ṯî mā·rā·ṯāh nə·’um- Yah·wehWLC · 17

“Your ways and deeds have brought this upon you. This is your punishment; how bitter it is,… because it pierces to the heart!”

דַּרְכֵּךְ֙ וּמַ֣עֲלָלַ֔יִךְ עָשׂ֥וֹ אֵ֖לֶּה לָ֑ךְ זֹ֤את רָעָתֵךְ֙ מָ֔ר כִּ֥י כִּ֣י נָגַ֖ע עַד־ לִבֵּֽךְ׃ס dar·kêḵ ū·ma·‘ă·lā·la·yiḵ ‘ā·śōw ’êl·leh lāḵ zōṯ rā·‘ā·ṯêḵ mār kî kî nā·ḡa‘ ‘aḏ- lib·bêḵWLC · 18

My anguish, my anguish! I writhe in pain! Oh, the pain in my chest! My heart pounds within me; I cannot be silent. For I have heard the sound of the horn, the alarm of battle.

Disaster after disaster is proclaimed, for the whole land is laid waste. My tents are destroyed in an instant, my curtains in a moment.

How long… must I see the signal flag and hear the sound of the horn?

עַד־ מָתַ֖י אֶרְאֶה־ נֵּ֑ס אֶשְׁמְעָ֖ה ק֥וֹל שׁוֹפָֽר׃ס ‘aḏ- mā·ṯay ’er·’eh- nês ’eš·mə·‘āh qō·wl šō·w·p̄ārWLC · 21

“For My people are fools; they have not known Me. They are foolish children, without understanding. They are skilled… in doing evil, but they know not how to do good.”

כִּ֣י׀ עַמִּ֗י אוֹתִי֙ אֱוִ֣יל לֹ֣א יָדָ֔עוּ הֵ֔מָּה סְכָלִים֙ בָּנִ֤ים וְלֹ֥א נְבוֹנִ֖ים הֵ֑מָּה חֲכָמִ֥ים הֵ֙מָּה֙ לְהָרַ֔ע יָדָֽעוּ׃ לֹ֥א וּלְהֵיטִ֖יב kî ‘am·mî ’ō·w·ṯî ’ĕ·wîl lō yā·ḏā·‘ū hêm·māh sə·ḵā·lîm bā·nîm wə·lō nə·ḇō·w·nîm hêm·māh ḥă·ḵā·mîm hêm·māh lə·hā·ra‘ yā·ḏā·‘ū lō ū·lə·hê·ṭîḇWLC · 22

I looked at the earth,… and it was formless and void; [I looked] to the heavens, and they [had] no light.

רָאִ֙יתִי֙ אֶת־ הָאָ֔רֶץ וְהִנֵּה־ תֹ֖הוּ וָבֹ֑הוּ וְאֶל־ הַשָּׁמַ֖יִם וְאֵ֥ין אוֹרָֽם׃ rā·’î·ṯî ’eṯ- hā·’ā·reṣ wə·hin·nêh- ṯō·hū wā·ḇō·hū wə·’el- haš·šā·ma·yim wə·’ên ’ō·w·rāmWLC · 23

I looked at the mountains, and behold, they were quaking; all the hills were swaying.

רָאִ֙יתִי֙ הֶֽהָרִ֔ים וְהִנֵּ֖ה רֹעֲשִׁ֑ים וְכָל־ הַגְּבָע֖וֹת הִתְקַלְקָֽלוּ׃ rā·’î·ṯî he·hā·rîm wə·hin·nêh rō·‘ă·šîm wə·ḵāl hag·gə·ḇā·‘ō·wṯ hiṯ·qal·qā·lūWLC · 24

I looked,… and no man was left; all the birds of the air had fled.

רָאִ֕יתִי וְהִנֵּ֖ה אֵ֣ין הָאָדָ֑ם וְכָל־ ע֥וֹף הַשָּׁמַ֖יִם נָדָֽדוּ׃ rā·’î·ṯî wə·hin·nêh ’ên hā·’ā·ḏām wə·ḵāl ‘ō·wp̄ haš·šā·ma·yim nā·ḏā·ḏūWLC · 25

I looked,… and the fruitful land was a desert. All its cities were torn down before the LORD, before His fierce anger.

רָאִ֕יתִי וְהִנֵּ֥ה הַכַּרְמֶ֖ל הַמִּדְבָּ֑ר וְכָל־ עָרָ֗יו נִתְּצוּ֙ מִפְּנֵ֣י יְהוָ֔ה מִפְּנֵ֖י חֲר֥וֹן אַפּֽוֹ׃ס rā·’î·ṯî wə·hin·nêh hak·kar·mel ham·miḏ·bār wə·ḵāl ‘ā·rāw nit·tə·ṣū mip·pə·nê Yah·weh mip·pə·nê ḥă·rō·wn ’ap·pōwWLC · 26

For this is what the LORD says: “The whole land will be desolate, but I will not finish its destruction…

𐤊𐤉 𐤊𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤕𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤔𐤌𐤌𐤄 𐤋𐤀 𐤅𐤊𐤋𐤄 𐤀𐤏𐤔𐤄

כִּי־ כֹה֙ יְהוָ֔ה אָמַ֣ר כָּל־ הָאָ֑רֶץ תִהְיֶ֖ה שְׁמָמָ֥ה לֹ֥א וְכָלָ֖ה אֶעֱשֶֽׂה׃ kî- ḵōh Yah·weh ’ā·mar kāl- hā·’ā·reṣ ṯih·yeh šə·mā·māh lō wə·ḵā·lāh ’e·‘ĕ·śehWLC · 27

Therefore… the earth will mourn [and] the heavens above… will grow dark. I have spoken, I have planned, and I will not relent… or turn back…”

עַל־ זֹאת֙ הָאָ֔רֶץ תֶּאֱבַ֣ל הַשָּׁמַ֖יִם מִמָּ֑עַל עַ֤ל כִּי־ וְקָדְר֥וּ דִבַּ֙רְתִּי֙ זַמֹּ֔תִי וְלֹ֥א נִחַ֖מְתִּי וְלֹא־ אָשׁ֥וּב מִמֶּֽנָּה׃ ‘al- zōṯ hā·’ā·reṣ te·’ĕ·ḇal haš·šā·ma·yim mim·mā·‘al ‘al kî- wə·qā·ḏə·rū ḏib·bar·tî zam·mō·ṯî wə·lō ni·ḥam·tî wə·lō- ’ā·šūḇ mim·men·nāhWLC · 28

Every city flees at the sound of the horseman and archer… They enter the thickets and climb among the rocks. Every city is abandoned; no inhabitant is left…

כָּל־ הָעִ֔יר בֹּרַ֙חַת֙ מִקּ֨וֹל פָּרָ֜שׁ וְרֹ֣מֵה קֶ֗שֶׁת בָּ֚אוּ בֶּעָבִ֔ים עָל֑וּ וּבַכֵּפִ֖ים כָּל־ הָעִ֣יר עֲזוּבָ֔ה וְאֵין־ יוֹשֵׁ֥ב בָּהֵ֖ן אִֽישׁ׃ kāl- hā·‘îr bō·ra·ḥaṯ miq·qō·wl pā·rāš wə·rō·mêh qe·šeṯ bā·’ū be·‘ā·ḇîm ‘ā·lū ū·ḇak·kê·p̄îm kāl- hā·‘îr ‘ă·zū·ḇāh wə·’ên- yō·wō·šêḇ bā·hên ’îšWLC · 29

And you, O devastated one, what will you do, though you dress yourself in scarlet, though you adorn yourself with gold jewelry, though you enlarge your eyes with paint? You adorn yourself in vain; your lovers despise you; they want to take your life.

וְאַתִּי שָׁד֜וּד מַֽה־ תַּעֲשִׂ֗י כִּֽי־ תִלְבְּשִׁ֨י שָׁנִ֜י כִּי־ תַעְדִּ֣י זָהָ֗ב עֲדִי־ כִּֽי־ תִקְרְעִ֤י עֵינַ֔יִךְ בַפּוּךְ֙ תִּתְיַפִּ֑י לַשָּׁ֖וְא עֹגְבִ֖ים מָאֲסוּ־ בָ֥ךְ יְבַקֵּֽשׁוּ׃ נַפְשֵׁ֥ךְ wə·ʾat·tī šā·ḏūḏ mah- ta·‘ă·śî kî- ṯil·bə·šî šā·nî kî- ṯa‘·dî zā·hāḇ ‘ă·ḏî- kî- ṯiq·rə·‘î ‘ê·na·yiḵ ḇap·pūḵ tiṯ·yap·pî laš·šāw ‘ō·ḡə·ḇîm mā·’ă·sū- ḇāḵ yə·ḇaq·qê·šū nap̄·šêḵWLC · 30

For I hear a cry like a woman in labor, a cry of anguish like one bearing her first child— the cry of the Daughter of Zion gasping for breath, stretching out her hands [to say], “Woe is me… for my soul faints before the murderers!”

כִּי֩ שָׁמַ֗עְתִּי ק֨וֹל כְּחוֹלָ֜ה צָרָה֙ כְּמַבְכִּירָ֔ה ק֧וֹל בַּת־ צִיּ֛וֹן תִּתְיַפֵּ֖חַ תְּפָרֵ֣שׂ כַּפֶּ֑יהָ אֽוֹי־ נָ֣א לִ֔י כִּֽי־ נַפְשִׁ֖י עָיְפָ֥ה לְהֹרְגִֽים׃פ kî šā·ma‘·tî qō·wl kə·ḥō·w·lāh ṣā·rāh kə·maḇ·kî·rāh qō·wl baṯ- ṣî·yō·wn tiṯ·yap·pê·aḥ tə·p̄ā·rêś kap·pe·hā ’ō·w- nā lî kî- nap̄·šî ‘ā·yə·p̄āh lə·hō·rə·ḡîmWLC · 31
