Chapter 41

The Murder of Gedaliah

1

  • In the seventh month, Ishmael son of Nethaniah, the son of Elishama, [who was a member] of the royal family and one of the king’s chief officers, came with ten men to Gedaliah son of Ahikam at Mizpah, and they ate a meal together there -.

Then Ishmael son of Nethaniah and the ten men who were with him got up and struck down Gedaliah son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, with the sword, killing the one whom the king of Babylon had appointed to govern the land.

Ishmael also killed all the Jews who were with… Gedaliah at Mizpah, as well as the Chaldean soldiers who… were there. -

  • On the second day after the murder of Gedaliah, when no one yet knew about it,

𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤄𐤔𐤍𐤉 𐤁𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤋𐤄𐤌𐤉𐤕 𐤀𐤕 𐤂𐤃𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤅 𐤋𐤀 𐤅𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤉𐤃𐤏

וַיְהִ֛י הַשֵּׁנִ֖י בַּיּ֥וֹם לְהָמִ֣ית אֶת־ גְּדַלְיָ֑הוּ לֹ֥א וְאִ֖ישׁ יָדָֽע׃ way·hî haš·šê·nî bay·yō·wm lə·hā·mîṯ ’eṯ- gə·ḏal·yā·hū lō wə·’îš yā·ḏā‘WLC · 4

eighty… men who had shaved off their beards, torn their garments, and cut themselves came from Shechem, Shiloh, and Samaria, vvv carrying grain offerings and frankincense for the house of the LORD.

And Ishmael son of Nethaniah went out from Mizpah to meet them, weeping… as he went… When [Ishmael] encountered [the men], he said, “Come… to Gedaliah son of Ahikam.”

יִשְׁמָעֵ֨אל בֶּן־ נְתַנְיָ֤ה וַ֠יֵּצֵא מִן־ הַמִּצְפָּ֔ה לִקְרָאתָם֙ וּבֹכֶ֑ה וַֽיְהִי֙ הֹלֵ֥ךְ הָלֹ֖ךְ כִּפְגֹ֣שׁ אֹתָ֔ם וַיֹּ֣אמֶר בֹּ֖אוּ אֶל־ אֲלֵיהֶ֔ם גְּדַלְיָ֥הוּ בֶן־ אֲחִיקָֽם׃ס yiš·mā·‘êl ben- nə·ṯan·yāh way·yê·ṣê min- ham·miṣ·pāh liq·rā·ṯām ū·ḇō·ḵeh way·hî hō·lêḵ hā·lōḵ kip̄·ḡōš ’ō·ṯām way·yō·mer bō·’ū ’el- ’ă·lê·hem gə·ḏal·yā·hū ḇen- ’ă·ḥî·qāmWLC · 6

  • And when they came into… the city, Ishmael son of Nethaniah and the men with him slaughtered them and threw them into… a cistern…

𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤊𐤁𐤅𐤀𐤌 𐤀𐤋 𐤕𐤅𐤊 𐤄𐤏𐤉𐤓 𐤉𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤀𐤋 𐤁𐤍 𐤍𐤕𐤍𐤉𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤀𐤍𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤀𐤕𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤇𐤈𐤌 𐤀𐤋 𐤕𐤅𐤊 𐤄𐤁𐤅𐤓 𐤄𐤅𐤀

וַיְהִ֕י כְּבוֹאָ֖ם אֶל־ תּ֣וֹךְ הָעִ֑יר יִשְׁמָעֵ֤אל בֶּן־ נְתַנְיָה֙ וְהָאֲנָשִׁ֥ים אֲשֶׁר־ אִתּֽוֹ׃ וַיִּשְׁחָטֵ֞ם אֶל־ תּ֣וֹךְ הַבּ֔וֹר ה֖וּא way·hî kə·ḇō·w·’ām ’el- tō·wḵ hā·‘îr yiš·mā·‘êl ben- nə·ṯan·yāh wə·hā·’ă·nā·šîm ’ă·šer- ’it·tōw way·yiš·ḥā·ṭêm ’el- tō·wḵ hab·bō·wr hūWLC · 7

But ten of the men among them said to Ishmael, “Do not kill us, for we have hidden treasure in the field— wheat, barley, oil, and honey!” So he refrained… from killing them with the others.

וַעֲשָׂרָ֨ה אֲנָשִׁ֜ים נִמְצְאוּ־ בָ֗ם וַיֹּאמְר֤וּ אֶל־ יִשְׁמָעֵאל֙ אַל־ תְּמִתֵ֔נוּ כִּֽי־ יֶשׁ־ לָ֤נוּ מַטְמֹנִים֙ בַּשָּׂדֶ֔ה חִטִּ֥ים וּשְׂעֹרִ֖ים וְשֶׁ֣מֶן וּדְבָ֑שׁ וַיֶּחְדַּ֕ל וְלֹ֥א הֱמִיתָ֖ם בְּת֥וֹךְ אֲחֵיהֶֽם׃ wa·‘ă·śā·rāh ’ă·nā·šîm nim·ṣə·’ū- ḇām way·yō·mə·rū ’el- yiš·mā·‘êl ’al- tə·mi·ṯê·nū kî- yeš- lā·nū maṭ·mō·nîm baś·śā·ḏeh ḥiṭ·ṭîm ū·śə·‘ō·rîm wə·še·men ū·ḏə·ḇāš way·yeḥ·dal wə·lō hĕ·mî·ṯām bə·ṯō·wḵ ’ă·ḥê·hemWLC · 8

Now the cistern into which Ishmael had thrown… all the bodies of the men he had struck down along with Gedaliah… was a large one that King Asa had made for fear of Baasha king of Israel. Ishmael son of Nethaniah filled it with the slain.

וְהַבּ֗וֹר אֲשֶׁר֩ יִשְׁמָעֵאל֙ אֵ֣ת׀ הִשְׁלִ֨יךְ שָׁ֤ם כָּל־ פִּגְרֵ֣י הָאֲנָשִׁ֗ים הִכָּה֙ בְּיַד־ גְּדַלְיָ֔הוּ ה֗וּא אֲשֶׁ֤ר אֲשֶׁ֤ר הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ אָסָ֔א עָשָׂה֙ מִפְּנֵ֖י בַּעְשָׁ֣א מֶֽלֶךְ־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל אֹת֗וֹ יִשְׁמָעֵ֥אל בֶּן־ נְתַנְיָ֖הוּ מִלֵּ֛א חֲלָלִֽים׃ wə·hab·bō·wr ’ă·šer yiš·mā·‘êl ’êṯ hiš·lîḵ šām kāl- piḡ·rê hā·’ă·nā·šîm hik·kāh bə·yaḏ- gə·ḏal·yā·hū hū ’ă·šer ’ă·šer ham·me·leḵ ’ā·sā ‘ā·śāh mip·pə·nê ba‘·šā me·leḵ- yiś·rā·’êl ’ō·ṯōw yiš·mā·‘êl ben- nə·ṯan·yā·hū mil·lê ḥă·lā·lîmWLC · 9

Then Ishmael took captive all the remnant of the people of Mizpah— the daughters of the king along with all the others who remained in Mizpah— over whom Nebuzaradan captain of the guard… had appointed Gedaliah son of Ahikam. Ishmael son of Nethaniah took them captive and set off to cross over to the Ammonites…

Johanan Rescues the Captives

When Johanan son of Kareah and all the commanders of the armies with him heard of all the crimes that Ishmael son of Nethaniah had committed,

𐤉𐤅𐤇𐤍𐤍 𐤁𐤍 𐤒𐤓𐤇 𐤅𐤊𐤋 𐤔𐤓𐤉 𐤄𐤇𐤉𐤋𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤀𐤕𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤌𐤏 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤓𐤏𐤄 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤉𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤀𐤋 𐤁𐤍 𐤍𐤕𐤍𐤉𐤄 𐤏𐤔𐤄

they took all their men and went to fight… Ishmael son of Nethaniah. And they found him near the great pool in Gibeon.

  • When all the people with Ishmael saw Johanan son of Kareah and all the commanders of the army with him, they rejoiced,

𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤕 𐤊𐤓𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤉𐤅𐤇𐤍𐤍 𐤁𐤍 𐤒𐤓𐤇 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤊𐤋 𐤔𐤓𐤉 𐤄𐤇𐤉𐤋𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤀𐤕𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤌𐤇𐤅

וַיְהִ֗י כָּל־ הָעָם֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר אֶת־ יִשְׁמָעֵ֔אל אֶת־ כִּרְא֤וֹת יֽוֹחָנָן֙ בֶּן־ קָרֵ֔חַ וְאֵ֛ת כָּל־ שָׂרֵ֥י הַחֲיָלִ֖ים אֲשֶׁ֣ר אִתּ֑וֹ וַיִּשְׂמָֽחוּ׃ way·hî kāl- hā·‘ām ’ă·šer ’eṯ- yiš·mā·‘êl ’eṯ- kir·’ō·wṯ yō·w·ḥā·nān ben- qā·rê·aḥ wə·’êṯ kāl- śā·rê ha·ḥă·yā·lîm ’ă·šer ’it·tōw way·yiś·mā·ḥūWLC · 13

and all the people whom Ishmael had taken captive at Mizpah turned vvv and went over to Johanan son of Kareah.

𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤉𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤀𐤋 𐤔𐤁𐤄 𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤌𐤑𐤐𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤎𐤁𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤁𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤋𐤊𐤅 𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤅𐤇𐤍𐤍 𐤁𐤍 𐤒𐤓𐤇

כָּל־ הָעָ֔ם אֲשֶׁר־ יִשְׁמָעֵ֖אל שָׁבָ֥ה מִן־ הַמִּצְפָּ֑ה וַיָּסֹ֙בּוּ֙ וַיָּשֻׁ֙בוּ֙ וַיֵּ֣לְכ֔וּ אֶל־ יֽוֹחָנָ֖ן בֶּן־ קָרֵֽחַ׃ kāl- hā·‘ām ’ă·šer- yiš·mā·‘êl šā·ḇāh min- ham·miṣ·pāh way·yā·sōb·bū way·yā·šu·ḇū way·yê·lə·ḵū ’el- yō·w·ḥā·nān ben- qā·rê·aḥWLC · 14

But Ishmael son of Nethaniah and eight [of his] men escaped from Johanan and went to the Ammonites…

𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤀𐤋 𐤁𐤍 𐤍𐤕𐤍𐤉𐤄 𐤁𐤔𐤌𐤍𐤄 𐤀𐤍𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤍𐤌𐤋𐤈 𐤌𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤅𐤇𐤍𐤍 𐤅𐤉𐤋𐤊 𐤀𐤋 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤏𐤌𐤅𐤍𐤎

וְיִשְׁמָעֵ֣אל בֶּן־ נְתַנְיָ֗ה בִּשְׁמֹנָ֣ה אֲנָשִׁ֔ים נִמְלַט֙ מִפְּנֵ֖י יֽוֹחָנָ֑ן וַיֵּ֖לֶךְ אֶל־ בְּנֵ֥י עַמּֽוֹן׃ס wə·yiš·mā·‘êl ben- nə·ṯan·yāh biš·mō·nāh ’ă·nā·šîm nim·laṭ mip·pə·nê yō·w·ḥā·nān way·yê·leḵ ’el- bə·nê ‘am·mō·wnWLC · 15

Then Johanan son of Kareah and all the commanders of the armies with him took the whole remnant of the people from Mizpah whom he had recovered… from Ishmael son of Nethaniah after Ishmael had killed Gedaliah son of Ahikam: the soldiers…, women, children, and court officials he had brought back from Gibeon.

יוֹחָנָ֨ן בֶּן־ קָרֵ֜חַ וְכָל־ שָׂרֵ֧י הַחֲיָלִ֣ים אֲשֶׁר־ אִתּ֗וֹ אֵ֣ת וַיִּקַּח֩ כָּל־ שְׁאֵרִ֤ית הָעָם֙ מִן־ הַמִּצְפָּ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֣ר הֵ֠שִׁיב מֵאֵ֨ת יִשְׁמָעֵ֤אל בֶּן־ נְתַנְיָה֙ אַחַ֣ר הִכָּ֔ה אֶת־ גְּדַלְיָ֖ה בֶּן־ אֲחִיקָ֑ם גְּבָרִ֞ים אַנְשֵׁ֣י הַמִּלְחָמָ֗ה וְנָשִׁ֤ים וְטַף֙ וְסָ֣רִסִ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר הֵשִׁ֖יב מִגִּבְעֽוֹן׃ yō·w·ḥā·nān ben- qā·rê·aḥ wə·ḵāl śā·rê ha·ḥă·yā·lîm ’ă·šer- ’it·tōw ’êṯ way·yiq·qaḥ kāl- šə·’ê·rîṯ hā·‘ām min- ham·miṣ·pāh ’ă·šer hê·šîḇ mê·’êṯ yiš·mā·‘êl ben- nə·ṯan·yāh ’a·ḥar hik·kāh ’eṯ- gə·ḏal·yāh ben- ’ă·ḥî·qām gə·ḇā·rîm ’an·šê ham·mil·ḥā·māh wə·nā·šîm wə·ṭap̄ wə·sā·ri·sîm ’ă·šer hê·šîḇ mig·giḇ·‘ō·wnWLC · 16

And they went and stayed in Geruth Chimham, near Bethlehem, in order to proceed… into Egypt

וַיֵּלְכ֗וּ וַיֵּֽשְׁבוּ֙ בְּגֵר֣וּת כְּמוֹהֶם אֲשֶׁר־ אֵ֖צֶל בֵּ֣ית לָ֑חֶם לָלֶ֖כֶת לָב֥וֹא מִצְרָֽיִם׃ way·yê·lə·ḵū way·yê·šə·ḇū bə·ḡê·rūṯ kə·mō·hɛm ’ă·šer- ’ê·ṣel bêṯ lā·ḥem lā·le·ḵeṯ lā·ḇō·w miṣ·rā·yimWLC · 17

to escape the Chaldeans. For they were afraid of [the Chaldeans] because Ishmael son of Nethaniah had struck down Gedaliah son of Ahikam, whom the king of Babylon had appointed over the land.
