A Warning against Going to Egypt

Then all the commanders of the forces, along with Johanan son of Kareah, Jezaniah son of Hoshaiah, and all the people from the least to the greatest, approached

כָּל־ שָׂרֵ֣י הַחֲיָלִ֔ים וְיֽוֹחָנָן֙ בֶּן־ קָרֵ֔חַ וִֽיזַנְיָ֖ה בֶּן־ הוֹשַֽׁעְיָ֑ה וְכָל־ הָעָ֖ם מִקָּטֹ֥ן וְעַד־ גָּדֽוֹל׃ וַֽיִּגְּשׁוּ֙ kāl- śā·rê ha·ḥă·yā·lîm wə·yō·w·ḥā·nān ben- qā·rê·aḥ wî·zan·yāh ben- hō·wō·ša‘·yāh wə·ḵāl hā·‘ām miq·qā·ṭōn wə·‘aḏ- gā·ḏō·wl way·yig·gə·šū — WLC · 1

Jeremiah the prophet and said “May our petition come… before you; pray… to the LORD your God on behalf of this entire remnant. For few of us remain of the many, as you can see with your own eyes.

יִרְמְיָ֣הוּ הַנָּבִ֗יא וַיֹּאמְר֞וּ אֶֽל־ תְחִנָּתֵ֙נוּ֙ תִּפָּל־ נָ֤א לְפָנֶ֔יךָ וְהִתְפַּלֵּ֤ל בַּעֲדֵ֙נוּ֙ אֶל־ יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ בְּעַ֖ד הַזֹּ֑את כָּל־ הַשְּׁאֵרִ֣ית כִּֽי־ מְעַט֙ נִשְׁאַ֤רְנוּ מֵֽהַרְבֵּ֔ה כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר רֹא֥וֹת אֹתָֽנוּ׃ עֵינֶ֖יךָ yir·mə·yā·hū han·nā·ḇî way·yō·mə·rū ’el- ṯə·ḥin·nā·ṯê·nū tip·pāl- nā lə·p̄ā·ne·ḵā wə·hiṯ·pal·lêl ba·‘ă·ḏê·nū ’el- Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·he·ḵā bə·‘aḏ haz·zōṯ kāl- haš·šə·’ê·rîṯ kî- mə·‘aṭ niš·’ar·nū mê·har·bêh ka·’ă·šer rō·’ō·wṯ ’ō·ṯā·nū ‘ê·ne·ḵā — WLC · 2

[Pray] that the LORD your God will tell us the way we should walk and the thing we should do.”

יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ אֶת־ וְיַגֶּד־ לָ֙נוּ֙ הַדֶּ֖רֶךְ אֲשֶׁ֣ר נֵֽלֶךְ־ בָּ֑הּ וְאֶת־ הַדָּבָ֖ר אֲשֶׁ֥ר נַעֲשֶֽׂה׃ Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·he·ḵā ’eṯ- wə·yag·geḏ- lā·nū had·de·reḵ ’ă·šer nê·leḵ- bāh wə·’eṯ- had·dā·ḇār ’ă·šer na·‘ă·śeh — WLC · 3

“I have heard you,” replied Jeremiah the prophet. “I will surely pray to the LORD your God as you request,… and I will tell you everything… that the LORD answers I will not withhold a word from you.”

שָׁמַ֔עְתִּי וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֲלֵיהֶ֜ם יִרְמְיָ֤הוּ הַנָּבִיא֙ הִנְנִ֧י מִתְפַּלֵּ֛ל אֶל־ יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֵיכֶ֖ם כְּדִבְרֵיכֶ֑ם וְֽהָיָ֡ה אַגִּ֣יד כָּֽל־ הַדָּבָר֩ אֲשֶׁר־ יְהוָ֤ה אֶתְכֶם֙ יַעֲנֶ֨ה לָכֶ֔ם לֹֽא־ אֶמְנַ֥ע דָּבָֽר׃ מִכֶּ֖ם šā·ma‘·tî way·yō·mer ’ă·lê·hem yir·mə·yā·hū han·nā·ḇî hin·nî miṯ·pal·lêl ’el- Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê·ḵem kə·ḏiḇ·rê·ḵem wə·hā·yāh ’ag·gîḏ kāl- had·dā·ḇār ’ă·šer- Yah·weh ’eṯ·ḵem ya·‘ă·neh lā·ḵem lō- ’em·na‘ dā·ḇār mik·kem — WLC · 4

Then they said to Jeremiah, “May the LORD be a true and faithful witness against us if we do not act upon every word that the LORD your God sends you to tell us. -

וְהֵ֙מָּה֙ אָמְר֣וּ אֶֽל־ יִרְמְיָ֔הוּ יְהוָה֙ יְהִ֤י אֱמֶ֣ת וְנֶאֱמָ֑ן לְעֵ֖ד בָּ֔נוּ אִם־ לֹ֡א נַעֲשֶֽׂה׃ כְּֽכָל־ הַ֠דָּבָר אֲשֶׁ֨ר יְהוָ֧ה אֱלֹהֶ֛יךָ יִֽשְׁלָחֲךָ֜ אֵלֵ֖ינוּ כֵּ֥ן wə·hêm·māh ’ā·mə·rū ’el- yir·mə·yā·hū Yah·weh yə·hî ’ĕ·meṯ wə·ne·’ĕ·mān lə·‘êḏ bā·nū ’im- lō na·‘ă·śeh kə·ḵāl- had·dā·ḇār ’ă·šer Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·he·ḵā yiš·lā·ḥă·ḵā ’ê·lê·nū kên — WLC · 5

Whether it is pleasant or unpleasant, we will obey the voice of the LORD our God to whom we are sending you, so that it may go well with us when we obey the voice of the LORD our God!”

אִם־ ט֣וֹב וְאִם־ רָ֔ע נִשְׁמָ֑ע בְּק֣וֹל׀ יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֵ֗ינוּ אֲשֶׁ֨ר אֲנוּ שֹׁלְחִ֥ים אֹתְךָ֛ אֵלָ֖יו לְמַ֙עַן֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר יִֽיטַב־ לָ֔נוּ כִּ֣י נִשְׁמַ֔ע בְּק֖וֹל יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ׃ס ’im- ṭō·wḇ wə·’im- rā‘ niš·mā‘ bə·qō·wl Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê·nū ’ă·šer ʾă·nū šō·lə·ḥîm ’ō·ṯə·ḵā ’ê·lāw lə·ma·‘an ’ă·šer yî·ṭaḇ- lā·nū kî niš·ma‘ bə·qō·wl Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê·nū — WLC · 6

After ten days… the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah,
𐤌𐤒𐤑 𐤏𐤔𐤓𐤕 𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤓𐤌𐤉𐤄𐤅
מִקֵּ֖ץ עֲשֶׂ֣רֶת יָמִ֑ים וַיְהִ֥י דְבַר־ יְהוָ֖ה וַיְהִ֕י אֶֽל־ יִרְמְיָֽהוּ׃ miq·qêṣ ‘ă·śe·reṯ yā·mîm way·hî ḏə·ḇar- Yah·weh way·hî ’el- yir·mə·yā·hū — WLC · 7

and he summoned… Johanan son of Kareah,… all the commanders of the forces who were with him, and all the people from the least to the greatest.

וַיִּקְרָ֗א אֶל־ יֽוֹחָנָן֙ בֶּן־ קָרֵ֔חַ וְאֶ֛ל כָּל־ שָׂרֵ֥י הַחֲיָלִ֖ים אֲשֶׁ֣ר אִתּ֑וֹ וּלְכָ֨ל־ הָעָ֔ם לְמִקָּטֹ֥ן וְעַד־ גָּדֽוֹל׃ way·yiq·rā ’el- yō·w·ḥā·nān ben- qā·rê·aḥ wə·’el kāl- śā·rê ha·ḥă·yā·lîm ’ă·šer ’it·tōw ū·lə·ḵāl- hā·‘ām lə·miq·qā·ṭōn wə·‘aḏ- gā·ḏō·wl — WLC · 8

[Jeremiah] told them, “Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, to whom you sent me to present your petition -:
𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤊𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤔𐤋𐤇𐤕𐤌 𐤀𐤕𐤉 𐤋𐤄𐤐𐤉𐤋 𐤕𐤇𐤍𐤕𐤊𐤌 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤅
וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֲלֵיהֶ֔ם כֹּֽה־ אָמַ֥ר יְהוָ֖ה אֱלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל אֵלָ֔יו אֲשֶׁ֨ר שְׁלַחְתֶּ֤ם אֹתִי֙ לְהַפִּ֥יל תְּחִנַּתְכֶ֖ם לְפָנָֽיו׃ way·yō·mer ’ă·lê·hem kōh- ’ā·mar Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê yiś·rā·’êl ’ê·lāw ’ă·šer šə·laḥ·tem ’ō·ṯî lə·hap·pîl tə·ḥin·naṯ·ḵem lə·p̄ā·nāw — WLC · 9

‘If… you will indeed stay in this land, then I will build you up and not tear you down; I will plant you and not uproot you, for I will relent of the disaster I have brought upon you.

אִם־ שׁ֤וֹב תֵּֽשְׁבוּ֙ הַזֹּ֔את בָּאָ֣רֶץ וּבָנִ֤יתִי אֶתְכֶם֙ וְלֹ֣א אֶהֱרֹ֔ס וְנָטַעְתִּ֥י אֶתְכֶ֖ם וְלֹ֣א אֶתּ֑וֹשׁ כִּ֤י נִחַ֙מְתִּי֙ אֶל־ הָ֣רָעָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר עָשִׂ֖יתִי לָכֶֽם׃ ’im- šō·wḇ tê·šə·ḇū haz·zōṯ bā·’ā·reṣ ū·ḇā·nî·ṯî ’eṯ·ḵem wə·lō ’e·hĕ·rōs wə·nā·ṭa‘·tî ’eṯ·ḵem wə·lō ’et·tō·wōš kî ni·ḥam·tî ’el- hā·rā·‘āh ’ă·šer ‘ā·śî·ṯî lā·ḵem — WLC · 10

Do not be afraid of the king of Babylon, whom you now fear; do not be afraid of him, declares the LORD, for I am with you to save you and deliver you from him.

אַל־ תִּֽירְא֗וּ מִפְּנֵי֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ בָּבֶ֔ל אֲשֶׁר־ אַתֶּ֥ם יְרֵאִ֖ים מִפָּנָ֑יו אַל־ תִּֽירְא֤וּ מִמֶּ֙נּוּ֙ נְאֻם־ יְהוָ֔ה כִּֽי־ אָ֔נִי אִתְּכֶ֣ם לְהוֹשִׁ֧יעַ אֶתְכֶ֛ם וּלְהַצִּ֥יל אֶתְכֶ֖ם מִיָּדֽוֹ׃ ’al- tî·rə·’ū mip·pə·nê me·leḵ bā·ḇel ’ă·šer- ’at·tem yə·rê·’îm mip·pā·nāw ’al- tî·rə·’ū mim·men·nū nə·’um- Yah·weh kî- ’ā·nî ’it·tə·ḵem lə·hō·wō·šî·a‘ ’eṯ·ḵem ū·lə·haṣ·ṣîl ’eṯ·ḵem mî·yā·ḏōw — WLC · 11

And I will show you compassion, and he will have compassion on you and restore you to your own land.’

וְאֶתֵּ֥ן לָכֶ֛ם רַחֲמִ֖ים וְרִחַ֣ם אֶתְכֶ֑ם וְהֵשִׁ֥יב אֶתְכֶ֖ם אֶל־ אַדְמַתְכֶֽם׃ wə·’et·tên lā·ḵem ra·ḥă·mîm wə·ri·ḥam ’eṯ·ḵem wə·hê·šîḇ ’eṯ·ḵem ’el- ’aḏ·maṯ·ḵem — WLC · 12

But if you say, ‘We will not stay in this land,’ vvv and you thus disobey the voice of the LORD your God,
𐤅𐤀𐤌 𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤀 𐤍𐤔𐤁 𐤄𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤁𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤋𐤁𐤋𐤕𐤉 𐤔𐤌𐤏 𐤁𐤒𐤅𐤋 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤊𐤌
וְאִם־ אַתֶּ֔ם אֹמְרִ֣ים לֹ֥א נֵשֵׁ֖ב הַזֹּ֑את בָּאָ֣רֶץ לְבִלְתִּ֣י שְׁמֹ֔עַ בְּק֖וֹל יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֵיכֶֽם׃ wə·’im- ’at·tem ’ō·mə·rîm lō nê·šêḇ haz·zōṯ bā·’ā·reṣ lə·ḇil·tî šə·mō·a‘ bə·qō·wl Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê·ḵem — WLC · 13

and if you say, ‘No, but we will go to the land of Egypt and live there, where we will not see war or hear the sound of the ram’s horn… or hunger for bread,’

לֵאמֹ֗ר לֹ֚א כִּ֣י נָב֔וֹא אֶ֤רֶץ מִצְרַ֙יִם֙ נֵשֵֽׁב׃ וְשָׁ֥ם אֲשֶׁ֤ר לֹֽא־ נִרְאֶה֙ מִלְחָמָ֔ה נִשְׁמָ֑ע וְק֥וֹל שׁוֹפָ֖ר לֹ֣א לֹֽא־ נִרְעָ֖ב וְלַלֶּ֥חֶם lê·mōr lō kî nā·ḇō·w ’e·reṣ miṣ·ra·yim nê·šêḇ wə·šām ’ă·šer lō- nir·’eh mil·ḥā·māh niš·mā‘ wə·qō·wl šō·w·p̄ār lō lō- nir·‘āḇ wə·lal·le·ḥem — WLC · 14

then… hear the word of the LORD, O remnant of Judah! This is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: ‘If you are determined… to go to Egypt… and reside there,

- then the sword you fear will overtake you there -, and the famine you dread… will follow on your heels… into Egypt, and you will die there.

So all… who resolve - to go to Egypt to reside there will die by sword and famine and plague. Not one of them will survive or escape… the disaster I will bring upon them.’

For this is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: ‘Just as My anger and wrath were poured out on the residents of Jerusalem, so will My wrath be poured out on you if you go to Egypt. You will become an object of cursing and horror, of vilification and disgrace, and you will never see this place again -.’

The LORD has told you, O remnant of Judah, ‘Do not go to Egypt.’ Know for sure… that I have warned you today!

For you… have deceived yourselves by sending me to the LORD your God, saying, ‘Pray to the LORD our God on our behalf, and as for all that the LORD our God… says, tell it to us and we will do it.’

For I have told you today, but you have not obeyed the voice of the LORD your God in all He has sent me to tell you.
