Jeremiah Taken to Egypt
1
- When Jeremiah had finished telling… all the people all the words of the LORD their God— everything that… the LORD… had sent him to [say]— -

Azariah son of Hoshaiah, Johanan son of Kareah, and all the arrogant men said to Jeremiah, “You vvv are lying! The LORD our God has not sent you to say, ‘You must not go to Egypt to reside there…’

עֲזַרְיָ֤ה בֶן־ הוֹשַֽׁעְיָה֙ וְיוֹחָנָ֣ן בֶּן־ קָרֵ֔חַ וְכָל־ הַזֵּדִ֑ים הָאֲנָשִׁ֖ים וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֶֽל־ יִרְמְיָ֗הוּ אֹמְרִ֣ים אַתָּ֣ה מְדַבֵּ֔ר שֶׁ֚קֶר יְהוָ֤ה אֱלֹהֵ֙ינוּ֙ לֹ֣א שְׁלָחֲךָ֞ לֵאמֹ֔ר לֹֽא־ תָבֹ֥אוּ מִצְרַ֖יִם שָֽׁם׃ לָג֥וּר ‘ă·zar·yāh ḇen- hō·wō·ša‘·yāh wə·yō·w·ḥā·nān ben- qā·rê·aḥ wə·ḵāl haz·zê·ḏîm hā·’ă·nā·šîm way·yō·mer ’el- yir·mə·yā·hū ’ō·mə·rîm ’at·tāh mə·ḏab·bêr še·qer Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê·nū lō šə·lā·ḥă·ḵā lê·mōr lō- ṯā·ḇō·’ū miṣ·ra·yim šām lā·ḡūr — WLC · 2

Rather, Baruch son of Neriah is inciting you against us to deliver us into the hands of the Chaldeans, so that they may put us to death or exile us to Babylon!”
𐤊𐤉 𐤁𐤓𐤅𐤊 𐤁𐤍 𐤍𐤓𐤉𐤄 𐤌𐤎𐤉𐤕 𐤀𐤕𐤊 𐤁𐤍𐤅 𐤋𐤌𐤏𐤍 𐤕𐤕 𐤀𐤕𐤍𐤅 𐤁𐤉𐤃 𐤄𐤊𐤔𐤃𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤄𐤌𐤉𐤕 𐤀𐤕𐤍𐤅 𐤅𐤋𐤄𐤂𐤋𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤕𐤍𐤅 𐤁𐤁𐤋
כִּ֗י בָּרוּךְ֙ בֶּן־ נֵ֣רִיָּ֔ה מַסִּ֥ית אֹתְךָ֖ בָּ֑נוּ לְמַעַן֩ תֵּ֨ת אֹתָ֤נוּ בְיַֽד־ הַכַּשְׂדִּים֙ לְהָמִ֣ית אֹתָ֔נוּ וּלְהַגְל֥וֹת אֹתָ֖נוּ בָּבֶֽל׃ kî bā·rūḵ ben- nê·rî·yāh mas·sîṯ ’ō·ṯə·ḵā bā·nū lə·ma·‘an têṯ ’ō·ṯā·nū ḇə·yaḏ- hak·kaś·dîm lə·hā·mîṯ ’ō·ṯā·nū ū·lə·haḡ·lō·wṯ ’ō·ṯā·nū bā·ḇel — WLC · 3

So Johanan son of Kareah and all the commanders of the forces… vvv disobeyed the command of the LORD to stay in the land of Judah.

Instead, Johanan son of Kareah and all the commanders of the forces took the whole remnant of Judah, those who had returned to the land of Judah from all the nations to which they had been scattered…,

- the men, the women, the children, the king’s daughters, and everyone… whom Nebuzaradan captain of the guard had allowed to remain with Gedaliah son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, as well as Jeremiah the prophet and Baruch son of Neriah.

אֶֽת־ הַ֠גְּבָרִים וְאֶת־ הַנָּשִׁ֣ים וְאֶת־ הַטַּף֮ וְאֶת־ הַמֶּלֶךְ֒ וְאֵ֣ת בְּנ֣וֹת כָּל־ הַנֶּ֗פֶשׁ אֲשֶׁ֤ר נְבוּזַרְאֲדָ֣ן רַב־ טַבָּחִ֔ים הִנִּ֙יחַ֙ אֶת־ גְּדַלְיָ֖הוּ בֶּן־ אֲחִיקָ֣ם בֶּן־ שָׁפָ֑ן וְאֵת֙ יִרְמְיָ֣הוּ הַנָּבִ֔יא וְאֶת־ בָּר֖וּךְ בֶּן־ נֵרִיָּֽהוּ׃ ’eṯ- hag·gə·ḇā·rîm wə·’eṯ- han·nā·šîm wə·’eṯ- haṭ·ṭap̄ wə·’eṯ- ham·me·leḵ wə·’êṯ bə·nō·wṯ kāl- han·ne·p̄eš ’ă·šer nə·ḇū·zar·’ă·ḏān raḇ- ṭab·bā·ḥîm hin·nî·aḥ ’eṯ- gə·ḏal·yā·hū ben- ’ă·ḥî·qām ben- šā·p̄ān wə·’êṯ yir·mə·yā·hū han·nā·ḇî wə·’eṯ- bā·rūḵ ben- nê·rî·yā·hū — WLC · 6

So they entered the land of Egypt because they did not obey the voice of the LORD, and they went as far as Tahpanhes.

וַיָּבֹ֙אוּ֙ אֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרַ֔יִם כִּ֛י לֹ֥א שָׁמְע֖וּ בְּק֣וֹל יְהוָ֑ה וַיָּבֹ֖אוּ עַד־ תַּחְפַּנְחֵֽס׃ס way·yā·ḇō·’ū ’e·reṣ miṣ·ra·yim kî lō šā·mə·‘ū bə·qō·wl Yah·weh way·yā·ḇō·’ū ‘aḏ- taḥ·pan·ḥês — WLC · 7

Then the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah at Tahpanhes…:

דְבַר־ יְהוָה֙ וַיְהִ֤י אֶֽל־ יִרְמְיָ֔הוּ בְּתַחְפַּנְחֵ֖ס לֵאמֹֽר׃ ḏə·ḇar- Yah·weh way·hî ’el- yir·mə·yā·hū bə·ṯaḥ·pan·ḥês lê·mōr — WLC · 8

“In the sight vvv [of the] Jews, pick up… some large stones and bury them in the clay of the brick pavement at the entrance to Pharaoh’s palace at Tahpanhes.
𐤋𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤍𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤉𐤌 𐤒𐤇 𐤁𐤉𐤃𐤊 𐤂𐤃𐤋𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤈𐤌𐤍𐤕𐤌 𐤁𐤌𐤋𐤈 𐤁𐤌𐤋𐤁𐤍 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤁𐤐𐤕𐤇 𐤐𐤓𐤏𐤄 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤁𐤕𐤇𐤐𐤍𐤇𐤎
לְעֵינֵ֖י אֲנָשִׁ֥ים יְהוּדִֽים׃ קַ֣ח בְּיָדְךָ֞ גְּדֹל֗וֹת אֲבָנִ֣ים וּטְמַנְתָּ֤ם בַּמֶּ֙לֶט֙ בַּמַּלְבֵּ֔ן אֲשֶׁ֛ר בְּפֶ֥תַח פַּרְעֹ֖ה בֵּית־ בְּתַחְפַּנְחֵ֑ס lə·‘ê·nê ’ă·nā·šîm yə·hū·ḏîm qaḥ bə·yā·ḏə·ḵā gə·ḏō·lō·wṯ ’ă·ḇā·nîm ū·ṭə·man·tām bam·me·leṭ bam·mal·bên ’ă·šer bə·p̄e·ṯaḥ par·‘ōh bêṯ- bə·ṯaḥ·pan·ḥês — WLC · 9

Then tell them that this is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel,… says: ‘I will send for… My servant Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and I will set his throne over these stones that I have embedded, and he will spread his royal pavilion over them.

וְאָמַרְתָּ֣ אֲלֵיהֶ֡ם כֹּֽה־ יְהוָ֨ה צְבָא֜וֹת אֱלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל הִנְנִ֤י אָמַר֩ שֹׁלֵ֙חַ֙ וְ֠לָקַחְתִּי אֶת־ עַבְדִּ֔י נְבוּכַדְרֶאצַּ֤ר מֶֽלֶךְ־ בָּבֶל֙ וְשַׂמְתִּ֣י כִסְא֔וֹ מִמַּ֛עַל הָאֵ֖לֶּה לָאֲבָנִ֥ים אֲשֶׁ֣ר טָמָ֑נְתִּי וְנָטָ֥ה אֶת־ שַׁפְרוּרוֹ עֲלֵיהֶֽם׃ wə·’ā·mar·tā ’ă·lê·hem kōh- Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ ’ĕ·lō·hê yiś·rā·’êl hin·nî ’ā·mar šō·lê·aḥ wə·lā·qaḥ·tî ’eṯ- ‘aḇ·dî nə·ḇū·ḵaḏ·reṣ·ṣar me·leḵ- bā·ḇel wə·śam·tî ḵis·’ōw mim·ma·‘al hā·’êl·leh lā·’ă·ḇā·nîm ’ă·šer ṭā·mā·nə·tî wə·nā·ṭāh ’eṯ- šap̄·rū·rō ‘ă·lê·hem — WLC · 10

He will come and strike down the land of Egypt, bringing death to those destined for death, captivity to those destined for captivity, and the sword to those destined for the sword.
𐤅𐤁𐤀𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤊𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤋𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤋𐤔𐤁𐤉 𐤅𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤋𐤔𐤁𐤉 𐤋𐤇𐤓𐤁 𐤅𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤋𐤇𐤓𐤁
וּבָאָה וְהִכָּ֖ה אֶת־ אֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרָ֑יִם לַמָּ֗וֶת אֲשֶׁ֧ר לַמָּ֣וֶת לַשֶּׁ֔בִי וַאֲשֶׁ֤ר לַשְּׁבִי֙ לֶחָֽרֶב׃ וַאֲשֶׁ֥ר לַחֶ֖רֶב ū·ḇå̄·ʾå̄h wə·hik·kāh ’eṯ- ’e·reṣ miṣ·rā·yim lam·mā·weṯ ’ă·šer lam·mā·weṯ laš·še·ḇî wa·’ă·šer laš·šə·ḇî le·ḥā·reḇ wa·’ă·šer la·ḥe·reḇ — WLC · 11

I will kindle a fire in the temples of the gods of Egypt, and [Nebuchadnezzar] will burn [those temples] and take [their gods] as captives. So he will wrap himself with the land of Egypt as a shepherd wraps himself in his garment, and he will depart from there unscathed.
𐤅𐤄𐤑𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤔 𐤁𐤁𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉 𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤔𐤓𐤐𐤌 𐤅𐤔𐤁𐤌 𐤅𐤏𐤈𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤊𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤄𐤓𐤏𐤄 𐤉𐤏𐤈𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤁𐤂𐤃𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤑𐤀 𐤌𐤔𐤌 𐤁𐤔𐤋𐤅𐤌
וְהִצַּ֣תִּי אֵ֗שׁ בְּבָתֵּי֙ אֱלֹהֵ֣י מִצְרַ֔יִם וּשְׂרָפָ֖ם וְשָׁבָ֑ם וְעָטָה֩ אֶת־ אֶ֨רֶץ מִצְרַ֜יִם כַּאֲשֶׁר־ הָֽרֹעֶה֙ יַעְטֶ֤ה אֶת־ בִּגְד֔וֹ וְיָצָ֥א מִשָּׁ֖ם בְּשָׁלֽוֹם׃ wə·hiṣ·ṣat·tî ’êš bə·ḇāt·tê ’ĕ·lō·hê miṣ·ra·yim ū·śə·rā·p̄ām wə·šā·ḇām wə·‘ā·ṭāh ’eṯ- ’e·reṣ miṣ·ra·yim ka·’ă·šer- hā·rō·‘eh ya‘·ṭeh ’eṯ- biḡ·ḏōw wə·yā·ṣā miš·šām bə·šā·lō·wm — WLC · 12

He will demolish the sacred pillars vvv of the temple of the sun in the land of Egypt, and he will burn down… the temples of the gods of Egypt.’”

וְשִׁבַּ֗ר אֶֽת־ מַצְּבוֹת֙ בֵּ֣ית שֶׁ֔מֶשׁ אֲשֶׁ֖ר בְּאֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרָ֑יִם וְאֶת־ יִשְׂרֹ֥ף בָּאֵֽשׁ׃ס בָּתֵּ֥י אֱלֹהֵֽי־ מִצְרַ֖יִם wə·šib·bar ’eṯ- maṣ·ṣə·ḇō·wṯ bêṯ še·meš ’ă·šer bə·’e·reṣ miṣ·rā·yim wə·’eṯ- yiś·rōp̄ bā·’êš bāt·tê ’ĕ·lō·hê- miṣ·ra·yim — WLC · 13
