Chapter 47
Judgment on the Philistines

This is the word of the LORD that came to Jeremiah the prophet about the Philistines before Pharaoh struck down Gaza.
𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤓𐤌𐤉𐤄𐤅 𐤄𐤍𐤁𐤉𐤀 𐤀𐤋 𐤐𐤋𐤔𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤈𐤓𐤌 𐤐𐤓𐤏𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤊𐤄 𐤏𐤆𐤄𐤎
דְבַר־ יְהוָ֛ה אֲשֶׁ֨ר הָיָ֧ה אֶל־ יִרְמְיָ֥הוּ הַנָּבִ֖יא אֶל־ פְּלִשְׁתִּ֑ים בְּטֶ֛רֶם פַרְעֹ֖ה אֶת־ יַכֶּ֥ה עַזָּֽה׃ס ḏə·ḇar- Yah·weh ’ă·šer hā·yāh ’el- yir·mə·yā·hū han·nā·ḇî ’el- pə·liš·tîm bə·ṭe·rem p̄ar·‘ōh ’eṯ- yak·keh ‘az·zāh — WLC · 1

This is what the LORD says: “See how the waters are rising from the north and becoming an overflowing torrent. They will overflow the land and its fullness, the cities and their inhabitants The people will cry out, and all who dwell in the land will wail

כֹּ֣ה׀ יְהוָ֗ה אָמַ֣ר הִנֵּה־ מַ֜יִם עֹלִ֤ים מִצָּפוֹן֙ וְהָיוּ֙ שׁוֹטֵ֔ף לְנַ֣חַל וְיִשְׁטְפוּ֙ אֶ֣רֶץ וּמְלוֹאָ֔הּ עִ֖יר וְיֹ֣שְׁבֵי בָ֑הּ הָֽאָדָ֔ם וְזָֽעֲקוּ֙ כֹּ֖ל יוֹשֵׁ֥ב הָאָֽרֶץ׃ וְהֵילִ֕ל kōh Yah·weh ’ā·mar hin·nêh- ma·yim ‘ō·lîm miṣ·ṣā·p̄ō·wn wə·hā·yū šō·w·ṭêp̄ lə·na·ḥal wə·yiš·ṭə·p̄ū ’e·reṣ ū·mə·lō·w·’āh ‘îr wə·yō·šə·ḇê ḇāh hā·’ā·ḏām wə·zā·‘ă·qū kōl yō·wō·šêḇ hā·’ā·reṣ wə·hê·lil — WLC · 2

at the sound of the galloping hooves of stallions, the rumbling of chariots, and the clatter of their wheels. The fathers will not turn back for their sons; their hands will hang limp.

מִקּ֗וֹל שַֽׁעֲטַת֙ פַּרְס֣וֹת אַבִּירָ֔יו מֵרַ֣עַשׁ לְרִכְבּ֔וֹ הֲמ֖וֹן גַּלְגִּלָּ֑יו אָבוֹת֙ לֹֽא־ הִפְנ֤וּ אֶל־ בָּנִ֔ים יָדָֽיִם׃ מֵֽרִפְי֖וֹן miq·qō·wl ša·‘ă·ṭaṯ par·sō·wṯ ’ab·bî·rāw mê·ra·‘aš lə·riḵ·bōw hă·mō·wn gal·gil·lāw ’ā·ḇō·wṯ lō- hip̄·nū ’el- bā·nîm yā·ḏā·yim mê·rip̄·yō·wn — WLC · 3

For the day has come to destroy all the Philistines, to cut off from Tyre and Sidon every remaining ally. Indeed, the LORD is about to destroy the Philistines, the remnant from the coasts of Caphtor.
𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤄𐤁𐤀 𐤋𐤔𐤃𐤅𐤃 𐤀𐤕 𐤊𐤋 𐤐𐤋𐤔𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤄𐤊𐤓𐤉𐤕 𐤋𐤑𐤓 𐤅𐤋𐤑𐤉𐤃𐤅𐤍 𐤊𐤋 𐤔𐤓𐤉𐤃 𐤏𐤆𐤓 𐤊𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤔𐤃𐤃 𐤐𐤋𐤔𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤔𐤀𐤓𐤉𐤕 𐤀𐤉 𐤊𐤐𐤕𐤅𐤓
עַל־ הַיּ֗וֹם הַבָּא֙ לִשְׁד֣וֹד אֶת־ כָּל־ פְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים לְהַכְרִ֤ית לְצֹר֙ וּלְצִיד֔וֹן כֹּ֖ל שָׂרִ֣יד עֹזֵ֑ר כִּֽי־ יְהוָה֙ אֶת־ שֹׁדֵ֤ד פְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים שְׁאֵרִ֖ית אִ֥י כַפְתּֽוֹר׃ ‘al- hay·yō·wm hab·bā liš·ḏō·wḏ ’eṯ- kāl- pə·liš·tîm lə·haḵ·rîṯ lə·ṣōr ū·lə·ṣî·ḏō·wn kōl śā·rîḏ ‘ō·zêr kî- Yah·weh ’eṯ- šō·ḏêḏ pə·liš·tîm šə·’ê·rîṯ ’î ḵap̄·tō·wr — WLC · 4

- The people of Gaza will shave their heads in mourning -; Ashkelon will be silenced. O remnant of their valley, how long… will you gash yourself?

אֶל־ עַזָּ֔ה קָרְחָה֙ בָּ֤אָה אַשְׁקְל֖וֹן נִדְמְתָ֥ה שְׁאֵרִ֣ית עִמְקָ֑ם עַד־ מָתַ֖י תִּתְגּוֹדָֽדִי׃ס ’el- ‘az·zāh qā·rə·ḥāh bā·’āh ’aš·qə·lō·wn niḏ·mə·ṯāh šə·’ê·rîṯ ‘im·qām ‘aḏ- mā·ṯay tiṯ·gō·w·ḏā·ḏî — WLC · 5

‘Alas, O sword of the LORD, how long… until you rest…? Return to your sheath; cease and be still!’

ה֗וֹי חֶ֚רֶב לַֽיהוָ֔ה עַד־ אָ֖נָה לֹ֣א תִשְׁקֹ֑טִי הֵאָֽסְפִי֙ אַל־ תַּעְרֵ֔ךְ הֵרָגְעִ֖י וָדֹֽמִּי׃ hō·w ḥe·reḇ Yah·weh ‘aḏ- ’ā·nāh lō ṯiš·qō·ṭî hê·’ā·sə·p̄î ’al- ta‘·rêḵ hê·rā·ḡə·‘î wā·ḏōm·mî — WLC · 6

How can it rest when the LORD has commanded it? He has appointed it against Ashkelon… and the shore of its coastland…”

אֵ֣יךְ תִּשְׁקֹ֔טִי וַֽיהוָ֖ה צִוָּה־ לָ֑הּ יְעָדָֽהּ׃ס אֶֽל־ אַשְׁקְל֛וֹן וְאֶל־ ח֥וֹף הַיָּ֖ם שָׁ֥ם ’êḵ tiš·qō·ṭî Yah·weh ṣiw·wāh- lāh yə·‘ā·ḏāh ’el- ’aš·qə·lō·wn wə·’el- ḥō·wp̄ hay·yām šām — WLC · 7
