Chapter 7
Jeremiah’s Message at the Temple Gate
1
This is the word that came to Jeremiah… from the LORD, saying,
𐤄𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤓𐤌𐤉𐤄𐤅 𐤌𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓
הַדָּבָר֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר הָיָ֣ה אֶֽל־ יִרְמְיָ֔הוּ מֵאֵ֥ת יְהוָ֖ה לֵאמֹֽר׃ had·dā·ḇār ’ă·šer hā·yāh ’el- yir·mə·yā·hū mê·’êṯ Yah·weh lê·mōr — WLC · 1

“Stand in the gate of the house of the LORD - and proclaim this… message: Hear the word of the LORD, all you people of Judah who enter through these gates to worship the LORD.
𐤏𐤌𐤃 𐤁𐤔𐤏𐤓 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤔𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤒𐤓𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤆𐤄 𐤅𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤕 𐤄𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤅 𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤊𐤋 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤄𐤁𐤀𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤀𐤋𐤄 𐤁𐤔𐤏𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤄𐤔𐤕𐤇𐤅𐤕 𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄𐤎
עֲמֹ֗ד בְּשַׁ֙עַר֙ בֵּ֣ית יְהוָ֔ה שָּׁ֔ם אֶת־ וְקָרָ֣אתָ הַזֶּ֑ה וְאָמַרְתָּ֞ הַדָּבָ֖ר שִׁמְע֣וּ דְבַר־ יְהוָ֗ה כָּל־ יְהוּדָה֙ הַבָּאִים֙ הָאֵ֔לֶּה בַּשְּׁעָרִ֣ים לְהִֽשְׁתַּחֲוֺ֖ת לַיהוָֽה׃ס ‘ă·mōḏ bə·ša·‘ar bêṯ Yah·weh šām ’eṯ- wə·qā·rā·ṯā haz·zeh wə·’ā·mar·tā had·dā·ḇār šim·‘ū ḏə·ḇar- Yah·weh kāl- yə·hū·ḏāh hab·bā·’îm hā·’êl·leh baš·šə·‘ā·rîm lə·hiš·ta·ḥă·wōṯ Yah·weh — WLC · 2

Thus says the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel: Correct your ways and deeds, and I will let you live in this place.

כֹּֽה־ אָמַ֞ר יְהוָ֤ה צְבָאוֹת֙ אֱלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל הֵיטִ֥יבוּ דַרְכֵיכֶ֖ם וּמַֽעַלְלֵיכֶ֑ם וַאֲשַׁכְּנָ֣ה אֶתְכֶ֔ם הַזֶּֽה׃ בַּמָּק֥וֹם kōh- ’ā·mar Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ ’ĕ·lō·hê yiś·rā·’êl hê·ṭî·ḇū ḏar·ḵê·ḵem ū·ma·‘al·lê·ḵem wa·’ă·šak·kə·nāh ’eṯ·ḵem haz·zeh bam·mā·qō·wm — WLC · 3

Do not trust in deceptive words, saying: ‘[This is] the temple of the LORD, the temple of the LORD, the temple of the LORD.’
𐤀𐤋 𐤕𐤁𐤈𐤇𐤅 𐤋𐤊𐤌 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤔𐤒𐤓 𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤉 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤄𐤌𐤄 𐤄𐤉𐤊𐤋 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤄𐤉𐤊𐤋 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤄𐤉𐤊𐤋 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄
אַל־ תִּבְטְח֣וּ לָכֶ֔ם אֶל־ הַשֶּׁ֖קֶר דִּבְרֵ֥י לֵאמֹ֑ר הֵֽמָּה׃ הֵיכַ֤ל יְהוָה֙ הֵיכַ֣ל יְהוָ֔ה הֵיכַ֥ל יְהוָ֖ה ’al- tiḇ·ṭə·ḥū lā·ḵem ’el- haš·še·qer diḇ·rê lê·mōr hêm·māh hê·ḵal Yah·weh hê·ḵal Yah·weh hê·ḵal Yah·weh — WLC · 4

For if you really correct… your ways and deeds, if you act… justly… toward one… another,
𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤌 𐤄𐤉𐤈𐤉𐤁 𐤕𐤉𐤈𐤉𐤁𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤃𐤓𐤊𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤌𐤏𐤋𐤋𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤀𐤌 𐤏𐤔𐤅 𐤕𐤏𐤔𐤅 𐤌𐤔𐤐𐤈 𐤁𐤉𐤍 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤅𐤁𐤉𐤍 𐤓𐤏𐤄𐤅
כִּ֤י אִם־ הֵיטֵיב֙ תֵּיטִ֔יבוּ אֶת־ דַּרְכֵיכֶ֖ם וְאֶת־ מַֽעַלְלֵיכֶ֑ם אִם־ עָשׂ֤וֹ תַֽעֲשׂוּ֙ מִשְׁפָּ֔ט בֵּ֥ין אִ֖ישׁ וּבֵ֥ין רֵעֵֽהוּ׃ kî ’im- hê·ṭêḇ tê·ṭî·ḇū ’eṯ- dar·ḵê·ḵem wə·’eṯ- ma·‘al·lê·ḵem ’im- ‘ā·śōw ṯa·‘ă·śū miš·pāṭ bên ’îš ū·ḇên rê·‘ê·hū — WLC · 5

if you no longer oppress the foreigner [and] the fatherless and the widow, and [if you] no longer shed innocent blood in this place or follow… other… gods to your own harm

לֹ֣א תַֽעֲשֹׁ֔קוּ גֵּ֣ר יָת֤וֹם וְאַלְמָנָה֙ אַֽל־ תִּשְׁפְּכ֖וּ נָקִ֔י וְדָ֣ם הַזֶּ֑ה בַּמָּק֣וֹם וְאַחֲרֵ֨י תֵלְכ֖וּ אֲחֵרִ֛ים לֹ֥א אֱלֹהִ֧ים לְרַ֥ע לָכֶֽם׃ lō ṯa·‘ă·šō·qū gêr yā·ṯō·wm wə·’al·mā·nāh ’al- tiš·pə·ḵū nā·qî wə·ḏām haz·zeh bam·mā·qō·wm wə·’a·ḥă·rê ṯê·lə·ḵū ’ă·ḥê·rîm lō ’ĕ·lō·hîm lə·ra‘ lā·ḵem — WLC · 6

then I will let you live in this place, in the land that I gave to your fathers forever… and ever.

וְשִׁכַּנְתִּ֤י אֶתְכֶם֙ הַזֶּ֔ה בַּמָּק֣וֹם בָּאָ֕רֶץ אֲשֶׁ֥ר נָתַ֖תִּי לַאֲבֽוֹתֵיכֶ֑ם לְמִן־ עוֹלָ֖ם וְעַד־ עוֹלָֽם׃ wə·šik·kan·tî ’eṯ·ḵem haz·zeh bam·mā·qō·wm bā·’ā·reṣ ’ă·šer nā·ṯat·tî la·’ă·ḇō·w·ṯê·ḵem lə·min- ‘ō·w·lām wə·‘aḏ- ‘ō·w·lām — WLC · 7

But look, you keep trusting in deceptive words to no avail.

הִנֵּ֤ה אַתֶּם֙ בֹּטְחִ֣ים לָכֶ֔ם עַל־ הַשָּׁ֑קֶר דִּבְרֵ֖י לְבִלְתִּ֖י הוֹעִֽיל׃ hin·nêh ’at·tem bō·ṭə·ḥîm lā·ḵem ‘al- haš·šā·qer diḇ·rê lə·ḇil·tî hō·w·‘îl — WLC · 8

Will you steal and murder, commit adultery and perjury…, burn incense to Baal, and follow… other gods that you have not known,
𐤄𐤂𐤍𐤁 𐤓𐤑𐤇 𐤅𐤍𐤀𐤐 𐤅𐤄𐤔𐤁𐤏 𐤋𐤔𐤒𐤓 𐤅𐤒𐤈𐤓 𐤋𐤁𐤏𐤋 𐤅𐤄𐤋𐤊 𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤉 𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤃𐤏𐤕𐤌
הֲגָנֹ֤ב׀ רָצֹ֙חַ֙ וְֽנָאֹ֔ף וְהִשָּׁבֵ֥עַ לַשֶּׁ֖קֶר וְקַטֵּ֣ר לַבָּ֑עַל וְהָלֹ֗ךְ אַחֲרֵ֛י אֲחֵרִ֖ים אֱלֹהִ֥ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר לֹֽא־ יְדַעְתֶּֽם׃ hă·ḡā·nōḇ rā·ṣō·aḥ wə·nā·’ōp̄ wə·hiš·šā·ḇê·a‘ laš·še·qer wə·qaṭ·ṭêr lab·bā·‘al wə·hā·lōḵ ’a·ḥă·rê ’ă·ḥê·rîm ’ĕ·lō·hîm ’ă·šer lō- yə·ḏa‘·tem — WLC · 9

and then come and stand before Me in this house, which bears My Name…, and say, ‘We are delivered, so we can continue with all these abominations’?
𐤅𐤁𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤅𐤏𐤌𐤃𐤕𐤌 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤄𐤆𐤄 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤁𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤍𐤒𐤓𐤀 𐤔𐤌𐤉 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤕𐤌 𐤍𐤑𐤋𐤍𐤅 𐤋𐤌𐤏𐤍 𐤏𐤔𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤕 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤋𐤄 𐤄𐤕𐤅𐤏𐤁𐤅𐤕
וּבָאתֶ֞ם וַעֲמַדְתֶּ֣ם לְפָנַ֗י הַזֶּה֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר בַּבַּ֤יִת נִקְרָא־ שְׁמִ֣י עָלָ֔יו וַאֲמַרְתֶּ֖ם נִצַּ֑לְנוּ לְמַ֣עַן עֲשׂ֔וֹת אֵ֥ת כָּל־ הָאֵֽלֶּה׃ הַתּוֹעֵב֖וֹת ū·ḇā·ṯem wa·‘ă·maḏ·tem lə·p̄ā·nay haz·zeh ’ă·šer bab·ba·yiṯ niq·rā- šə·mî ‘ā·lāw wa·’ă·mar·tem niṣ·ṣal·nū lə·ma·‘an ‘ă·śō·wṯ ’êṯ kāl- hā·’êl·leh hat·tō·w·‘ê·ḇō·wṯ — WLC · 10

Has this house, which bears My Name, become a den of robbers in your sight? Yes, I too have seen it, declares the LORD.

הַזֶּ֛ה הַבַּ֧יִת אֲשֶׁר־ נִקְרָֽא־ שְׁמִ֥י הָיָ֨ה הַמְעָרַ֣ת פָּרִצִ֗ים עָלָ֖יו בְּעֵינֵיכֶ֑ם הִנֵּ֥ה אָנֹכִ֛י גַּ֧ם רָאִ֖יתִי נְאֻם־ יְהוָֽה׃ס haz·zeh hab·ba·yiṯ ’ă·šer- niq·rā- šə·mî hā·yāh ham·‘ā·raṯ pā·ri·ṣîm ‘ā·lāw bə·‘ê·nê·ḵem hin·nêh ’ā·nō·ḵî gam rā·’î·ṯî nə·’um- Yah·weh — WLC · 11

But go now to the place in Shiloh where I first made a dwelling for My Name…, and see what I did to it because of the wickedness of My people Israel.
𐤊𐤉 𐤋𐤊𐤅 𐤍𐤀 𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤒𐤅𐤌𐤉 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤁𐤔𐤉𐤋𐤅 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤁𐤓𐤀𐤔𐤅𐤍𐤄 𐤔𐤊𐤍𐤕𐤉 𐤔𐤌𐤉 𐤔𐤌 𐤅𐤓𐤀𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤏𐤔𐤉𐤕𐤉 𐤋𐤅 𐤌𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤓𐤏𐤕 𐤏𐤌𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋
כִּ֣י לְכוּ־ נָ֗א אֶל־ מְקוֹמִי֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר בְּשִׁיל֔וֹ אֲשֶׁ֨ר בָּרִֽאשׁוֹנָ֑ה שִׁכַּ֧נְתִּֽי שְׁמִ֛י שָׁ֖ם וּרְאוּ֙ אֵ֣ת אֲשֶׁר־ עָשִׂ֣יתִי ל֔וֹ מִפְּנֵ֕י רָעַ֖ת עַמִּ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ kî lə·ḵū- nā ’el- mə·qō·w·mî ’ă·šer bə·šî·lōw ’ă·šer bā·ri·šō·w·nāh šik·kan·tî šə·mî šām ū·rə·’ū ’êṯ ’ă·šer- ‘ā·śî·ṯî lōw mip·pə·nê rā·‘aṯ ‘am·mî yiś·rā·’êl — WLC · 12

And now, because you have done all these things, declares the LORD, and because I have spoken to you again and again… but you would not listen, and I have called to you but you would not answer,
𐤅𐤏𐤕𐤄 𐤉𐤏𐤍 𐤏𐤔𐤅𐤕𐤊𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤋𐤄 𐤄𐤌𐤏𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤍𐤀𐤌 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤀𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤄𐤔𐤊𐤌 𐤅𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤕𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤒𐤓𐤀 𐤀𐤕𐤊𐤌 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤏𐤍𐤉𐤕𐤌
וְעַתָּ֗ה יַ֧עַן עֲשׂוֹתְכֶ֛ם אֶת־ כָּל־ הָאֵ֖לֶּה הַמַּֽעֲשִׂ֥ים נְאֻם־ יְהוָ֑ה וָאֲדַבֵּ֨ר אֲלֵיכֶ֜ם הַשְׁכֵּ֤ם וְדַבֵּר֙ וְלֹ֣א שְׁמַעְתֶּ֔ם וָאֶקְרָ֥א אֶתְכֶ֖ם וְלֹ֥א עֲנִיתֶֽם׃ wə·‘at·tāh ya·‘an ‘ă·śō·wṯ·ḵem ’eṯ- kāl- hā·’êl·leh ham·ma·‘ă·śîm nə·’um- Yah·weh wā·’ă·ḏab·bêr ’ă·lê·ḵem haš·kêm wə·ḏab·bêr wə·lō šə·ma‘·tem wā·’eq·rā ’eṯ·ḵem wə·lō ‘ă·nî·ṯem — WLC · 13

therefore what I did to Shiloh I will now do to the house that bears My Name…, [the house] in which you trust the place that I gave to you and your fathers

עָשִׂ֖יתִי לְשִׁלֽוֹ׃ וְעָשִׂ֜יתִי לַבַּ֣יִת׀ אֲשֶׁ֧ר נִֽקְרָא־ שְׁמִ֣י עָלָ֗יו אֲשֶׁ֤ר אַתֶּם֙ בֹּטְחִ֣ים בּ֔וֹ וְלַ֨מָּק֔וֹם אֲשֶׁר־ נָתַ֥תִּי לָכֶ֖ם וְלַאֲבֽוֹתֵיכֶ֑ם כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר ‘ā·śî·ṯî lə·ši·lōw wə·‘ā·śî·ṯî lab·ba·yiṯ ’ă·šer niq·rā- šə·mî ‘ā·lāw ’ă·šer ’at·tem bō·ṭə·ḥîm bōw wə·lam·mā·qō·wm ’ă·šer- nā·ṯat·tî lā·ḵem wə·la·’ă·ḇō·w·ṯê·ḵem ka·’ă·šer — WLC · 14

And I will cast you out of My presence, just as I have cast out all your brothers, all the descendants of Ephraim.

וְהִשְׁלַכְתִּ֥י אֶתְכֶ֖ם מֵעַ֣ל פָּנָ֑י כַּאֲשֶׁ֤ר הִשְׁלַ֙כְתִּי֙ אֶת־ כָּל־ אֲחֵיכֶ֔ם אֵ֖ת כָּל־ זֶ֥רַע אֶפְרָֽיִם׃ס wə·hiš·laḵ·tî ’eṯ·ḵem mê·‘al pā·nāy ka·’ă·šer hiš·laḵ·tî ’eṯ- kāl- ’ă·ḥê·ḵem ’êṯ kāl- ze·ra‘ ’ep̄·rā·yim — WLC · 15
Judah’s Idolatry Persists

As for you, do not pray for these people, do not offer a plea or petition on their behalf, and do not beg Me, for I will not listen to you.
𐤅𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤀𐤋 𐤕𐤕𐤐𐤋𐤋 𐤁𐤏𐤃 𐤄𐤆𐤄 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤋 𐤕𐤔𐤀 𐤓𐤍𐤄 𐤅𐤕𐤐𐤋𐤄 𐤁𐤏𐤃𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤋 𐤕𐤐𐤂𐤏 𐤁𐤉 𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤉𐤍𐤍𐤉 𐤔𐤌𐤏 𐤀𐤕𐤊
וְאַתָּ֞ה אַל־ תִּתְפַּלֵּ֣ל׀ בְּעַד־ הַזֶּ֗ה הָעָ֣ם וְאַל־ תִּשָּׂ֧א רִנָּ֥ה וּתְפִלָּ֖ה בַעֲדָ֛ם וְאַל־ תִּפְגַּע־ בִּ֑י כִּי־ אֵינֶ֥נִּי שֹׁמֵ֖עַ אֹתָֽךְ׃ wə·’at·tāh ’al- tiṯ·pal·lêl bə·‘aḏ- haz·zeh hā·‘ām wə·’al- tiś·śā rin·nāh ū·ṯə·p̄il·lāh ḇa·‘ă·ḏām wə·’al- tip̄·ga‘- bî kî- ’ê·nen·nî šō·mê·a‘ ’ō·ṯāḵ — WLC · 16

Do you not see what they are doing in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem?

The sons gather wood, the fathers light the fire, and the women knead the dough to make cakes for the Queen of Heaven; they pour out drink offerings to other gods to provoke Me to anger.

Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: Behold, My anger and My fury will be poured out on this place, on man and beast, on the trees of the field… and the produce of the land, and it will burn and not be extinguished.

This is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: Add your burnt offerings… to your other sacrifices and eat the meat yourselves!

but… - this is what I commanded them: - Obey Me,… and I will be your God, and you will be My people. You must walk in all the ways I have commanded you, so that it may go well with you.

Yet they did not listen or incline their ear, but they followed the stubborn inclinations of their own evil hearts. They went backward and not forward.

Yet they would not listen to Me [or] incline their ear, but they stiffened their necks [and] did more evil than their fathers.

When you tell them all these things, they will not listen to you. When you call to them, they will not answer.

Therefore you must say to them, ‘This is the nation that would not listen to the voice of the LORD their God and would not receive correction. Truth has perished; it has disappeared from their lips.

For the people of Judah have done evil in My sight, declares the LORD. They have set up their abominations in the house that bears My Name…, and so have defiled it.

They have built the high places of Topheth in the Valley of Ben-hinnom so they could burn their sons… and daughters in the fire— something I never commanded, nor did it [even] enter… My mind.

So behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when this place will no longer be called Topheth and the Valley of Ben-hinnom,… but… the Valley of Slaughter. For they will bury [the dead] in Topheth until there is no more room.

The corpses of this people will become food for the birds of the air and the beasts of the earth, and there will be no one to scare them away.

I will remove from the cities of Judah and the streets of Jerusalem the sounds of joy and gladness… and the voices of the bride and bridegroom, for the land will become a wasteland.”
