Chapter 8
Judah’s Sin and Punishment
1
“At that time,” declares the LORD, “the bones of the kings of Judah, the bones of the officials, the bones of the priests, the bones of the prophets, and the bones of the people of Jerusalem will be removed from their graves.

הַהִ֣יא בָּעֵ֣ת נְאֻם־ יְהוָ֡ה עַצְמ֣וֹת מַלְכֵֽי־ יְהוּדָ֣ה וְאֶת־ עַצְמוֹת־ שָׂרָיו֩ וְאֶת־ עַצְמ֨וֹת הַכֹּהֲנִ֜ים וְאֵ֣ת׀ עַצְמ֣וֹת הַנְּבִיאִ֗ים וְאֵ֛ת עַצְמ֥וֹת יוֹשְׁבֵֽי־ יְרוּשָׁלִָ֖ם וְיֹצִיאוּ אֶת־ מִקִּבְרֵיהֶֽם׃ ha·hî bā·‘êṯ nə·’um- Yah·weh ‘aṣ·mō·wṯ mal·ḵê- yə·hū·ḏāh wə·’eṯ- ‘aṣ·mō·wṯ- śā·rāw wə·’eṯ- ‘aṣ·mō·wṯ hak·kō·hă·nîm wə·’êṯ ‘aṣ·mō·wṯ han·nə·ḇî·’îm wə·’êṯ ‘aṣ·mō·wṯ yō·wō·šə·ḇê- yə·rū·šā·lim wə·yō·ṣī·ʾū ’eṯ- miq·qiḇ·rê·hem — WLC · 1

They will be exposed to the sun and moon, and to all the host of heaven which they have loved, served, followed…, consulted, and worshiped Their bones will not be gathered up [or] buried, but will become like dung lying on… the ground.

וּשְׁטָחוּם֩ לַשֶּׁ֨מֶשׁ וְלַיָּרֵ֜חַ וּלְכֹ֣ל׀ צְבָ֣א הַשָּׁמַ֗יִם אֲשֶׁ֨ר אֲהֵב֜וּם וַאֲשֶׁ֤ר עֲבָדוּם֙ וַֽאֲשֶׁר֙ הָלְכ֣וּ אַֽחֲרֵיהֶ֔ם וַאֲשֶׁ֣ר דְּרָשׁ֔וּם וַאֲשֶׁ֥ר הִֽשְׁתַּחֲו֖וּ לָהֶ֑ם לֹ֤א יֵאָֽסְפוּ֙ וְלֹ֣א יִקָּבֵ֔רוּ יִֽהְיֽוּ׃ לְדֹ֛מֶן עַל־ פְּנֵ֥י הָאֲדָמָ֖ה ū·šə·ṭā·ḥūm laš·še·meš wə·lay·yā·rê·aḥ ū·lə·ḵōl ṣə·ḇā haš·šā·ma·yim ’ă·šer ’ă·hê·ḇūm wa·’ă·šer ‘ă·ḇā·ḏūm wa·’ă·šer hā·lə·ḵū ’a·ḥă·rê·hem wa·’ă·šer də·rā·šūm wa·’ă·šer hiš·ta·ḥă·wū lā·hem lō yê·’ā·sə·p̄ū wə·lō yiq·qā·ḇê·rū yih·yū lə·ḏō·men ‘al- pə·nê hā·’ă·ḏā·māh — WLC · 2

And wherever… I have banished them…, the remnant of this evil family will choose death over life,” declares the LORD of Hosts.

בְּכָל־ הַמְּקֹמ֤וֹת הַנִּשְׁאָרִים֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר הִדַּחְתִּ֣ים שָׁ֔ם לְכֹ֗ל הַשְּׁאֵרִית֙ הַנִּשְׁאָרִ֔ים הַזֹּ֑את הָֽרָעָ֖ה הַמִּשְׁפָּחָ֥ה וְנִבְחַ֥ר מָ֙וֶת֙ מִן־ מֵֽחַיִּ֔ים נְאֻ֖ם יְהוָ֥ה צְבָאֽוֹת׃ס bə·ḵāl ham·mə·qō·mō·wṯ han·niš·’ā·rîm ’ă·šer hid·daḥ·tîm šām lə·ḵōl haš·šə·’ê·rîṯ han·niš·’ā·rîm haz·zōṯ hā·rā·‘āh ham·miš·pā·ḥāh wə·niḇ·ḥar mā·weṯ min- mê·ḥay·yîm nə·’um Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ — WLC · 3

So you are to tell them this is what the LORD says: “Do [men] fall and not get up again?… Does one turn away and not return?

וְאָמַרְתָּ֣ אֲלֵיהֶ֗ם כֹּ֚ה יְהוָ֔ה אָמַ֣ר הֲיִפְּל֖וּ וְלֹ֣א יָק֑וּמוּ אִם־ יָשׁ֖וּב וְלֹ֥א יָשֽׁוּב׃ wə·’ā·mar·tā ’ă·lê·hem kōh Yah·weh ’ā·mar hă·yip·pə·lū wə·lō yā·qū·mū ’im- yā·šūḇ wə·lō yā·šūḇ — WLC · 4

Why [then] have these people turned away? Why does Jerusalem always turn away?… They cling to deceit; they refuse to return.

מַדּ֨וּעַ הַזֶּ֛ה הָעָ֥ם שׁוֹבְבָ֜ה יְרוּשָׁלִַ֖ם מְשֻׁבָ֣ה נִצַּ֑חַת הֶחֱזִ֙יקוּ֙ בַּתַּרְמִ֔ית מֵאֲנ֖וּ לָשֽׁוּב׃ mad·dū·a‘ haz·zeh hā·‘ām šō·wḇ·ḇāh yə·rū·šā·lim mə·šu·ḇāh niṣ·ṣa·ḥaṯ he·ḥĕ·zî·qū bat·tar·mîṯ mê·’ă·nū lā·šūḇ — WLC · 5

I have listened and heard; they do not speak what is right. No one repents of his wickedness, asking, ‘What have I done?’ Everyone has pursued his own course like a horse charging into battle.

הִקְשַׁ֤בְתִּי וָֽאֶשְׁמָע֙ לוֹא־ יְדַבֵּ֔רוּ כֵ֣ן אֵ֣ין אִ֗ישׁ נִחָם֙ עַל־ רָ֣עָת֔וֹ לֵאמֹ֖ר מֶ֣ה עָשִׂ֑יתִי כֻּלֹּ֗ה שָׁ֚ב בִּמְרֻצוֹתָם כְּס֥וּס שׁוֹטֵ֖ף בַּמִּלְחָמָֽה׃ hiq·šaḇ·tî wā·’eš·mā‘ lō·w- yə·ḏab·bê·rū ḵên ’ên ’îš ni·ḥām ‘al- rā·‘ā·ṯōw lê·mōr meh ‘ā·śî·ṯî kul·lōh šāb̲ bim·ru·ṣō·ṯå̄m kə·sūs šō·w·ṭêp̄ bam·mil·ḥā·māh — WLC · 6

Even the stork in the sky knows her appointed seasons. The turtledove, the swift, and the thrush keep their time of migration, but My people do not know the requirements of the LORD.
𐤂𐤌 𐤇𐤎𐤉𐤃𐤄 𐤁𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤃𐤏𐤄 𐤌𐤅𐤏𐤃𐤉𐤄 𐤅𐤕𐤓 𐤅𐤎𐤅𐤎 𐤅𐤏𐤂𐤅𐤓 𐤔𐤌𐤓𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤏𐤕 𐤁𐤀𐤍𐤄 𐤅𐤏𐤌𐤉 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤃𐤏𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤌𐤔𐤐𐤈 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄
גַּם־ חֲסִידָ֣ה בַשָּׁמַ֗יִם יָֽדְעָה֙ מֽוֹעֲדֶ֔יהָ וְתֹ֤ר וְסוּס וְעָג֔וּר שָׁמְר֖וּ אֶת־ עֵ֣ת בֹּאָ֑נָה וְעַמִּ֕י לֹ֣א יָֽדְע֔וּ אֵ֖ת מִשְׁפַּ֥ט יְהוָֽה׃ gam- ḥă·sî·ḏāh ḇaš·šā·ma·yim yā·ḏə·‘āh mō·w·‘ă·ḏe·hā wə·ṯōr wə·sūs wə·‘ā·ḡūr šā·mə·rū ’eṯ- ‘êṯ bō·’ā·nāh wə·‘am·mî lō yā·ḏə·‘ū ’êṯ miš·paṭ Yah·weh — WLC · 7

How can you say, ‘We are wise, and the Law of the LORD is with us,’ when in fact… the lying pen of the scribes has produced a deception?

אֵיכָ֤ה תֹֽאמְרוּ֙ אֲנַ֔חְנוּ חֲכָמִ֣ים וְתוֹרַ֥ת יְהוָ֖ה אִתָּ֑נוּ אָכֵן֙ הִנֵּ֣ה לַשֶּׁ֣קֶר עֵ֖ט סֹפְרִֽים׃ עָשָׂ֔ה שֶׁ֥קֶר ’ê·ḵāh ṯō·mə·rū ’ă·naḥ·nū ḥă·ḵā·mîm wə·ṯō·w·raṯ Yah·weh ’it·tā·nū ’ā·ḵên hin·nêh laš·še·qer ‘êṭ sō·p̄ə·rîm ‘ā·śāh še·qer — WLC · 8

The wise will be put to shame; they will be dismayed and trapped. Since they have rejected the word of the LORD, what wisdom do they really have?

חֲכָמִ֔ים הֹבִ֣ישׁוּ חַ֖תּוּ וַיִּלָּכֵ֑דוּ הִנֵּ֤ה מָאָ֔סוּ בִדְבַר־ יְהוָה֙ מֶ֖ה וְחָכְמַֽת־ לָהֶֽם׃ס ḥă·ḵā·mîm hō·ḇî·šū ḥat·tū way·yil·lā·ḵê·ḏū hin·nêh mā·’ā·sū ḇiḏ·ḇar- Yah·weh meh wə·ḥā·ḵə·maṯ- lā·hem — WLC · 9

Therefore I will give their wives to other men [and] their fields to new owners. For from the least [of them] to the greatest, all are greedy for gain; from prophet to priest, all practice deceit.

לָכֵן֩ אֶתֵּ֨ן אֶת־ נְשֵׁיהֶ֜ם לַאֲחֵרִ֗ים שְׂדֽוֹתֵיהֶם֙ לְי֣וֹרְשִׁ֔ים כִּ֤י מִקָּטֹן֙ וְעַד־ גָּד֔וֹל כֻּלֹּ֖ה בֹּצֵ֣עַ בָּ֑צַע מִנָּבִיא֙ וְעַד־ כֹּהֵ֔ן כֻּלֹּ֖ה עֹ֥שֶׂה שָּֽׁקֶר׃ lā·ḵên ’et·tên ’eṯ- nə·šê·hem la·’ă·ḥê·rîm śə·ḏō·w·ṯê·hem lə·yō·wr·šîm kî miq·qā·ṭōn wə·‘aḏ- gā·ḏō·wl kul·lōh bō·ṣê·a‘ bā·ṣa‘ min·nā·ḇî wə·‘aḏ- kō·hên kul·lōh ‘ō·śeh šā·qer — WLC · 10

They dress the wound of the daughter of My people… with very little care, saying, ‘Peace, peace,’ when there is no peace [at all].

וַיְרַפּ֞וּ אֶת־ שֶׁ֤בֶר בַּת־ עַמִּי֙ עַל־ נְקַלָּ֔ה לֵאמֹ֖ר שָׁל֣וֹם׀ שָׁל֑וֹם וְאֵ֖ין שָׁלֽוֹם׃ way·rap·pū ’eṯ- še·ḇer baṯ- ‘am·mî ‘al- nə·qal·lāh lê·mōr šā·lō·wm šā·lō·wm wə·’ên šā·lō·wm — WLC · 11

Are they ashamed of the abomination they have committed? No, they have no shame at all; they do not even know how to blush. So they will fall among the fallen; when I punish them, they will collapse, says the LORD.

הֹבִ֕שׁוּ כִּ֥י תוֹעֵבָ֖ה עָשׂ֑וּ גַּם־ לֹֽא־ יֵבֹ֗שׁוּ בּ֣וֹשׁ לֹ֣א יָדָ֔עוּ וְהִכָּלֵם֙ לָכֵ֞ן יִפְּל֣וּ בַנֹּפְלִ֗ים בְּעֵ֧ת פְּקֻדָּתָ֛ם יִכָּשְׁל֖וּ אָמַ֥ר יְהוָֽה׃ס hō·ḇi·šū kî ṯō·w·‘ê·ḇāh ‘ā·śū gam- lō- yê·ḇō·šū bō·wōš lō yā·ḏā·‘ū wə·hik·kā·lêm lā·ḵên yip·pə·lū ḇan·nō·p̄ə·lîm bə·‘êṯ pə·qud·dā·ṯām yik·kā·šə·lū ’ā·mar Yah·weh — WLC · 12

I will take away their harvest…, declares the LORD. There will be no grapes on the vine, nor figs on the tree, and even the leaf will wither. Whatever I have given them will be lost to them.”

אָסֹ֥ף אֲסִיפֵ֖ם נְאֻם־ יְהֹוָ֑ה אֵין֩ עֲנָבִ֨ים בַּגֶּ֜פֶן וְאֵ֧ין תְּאֵנִ֣ים בַּתְּאֵנָ֗ה וְהֶֽעָלֶה֙ נָבֵ֔ל וָאֶתֵּ֥ן לָהֶ֖ם יַעַבְרֽוּם׃ ’ā·sōp̄ ’ă·sî·p̄êm nə·’um- Yah·weh ’ên ‘ă·nā·ḇîm bag·ge·p̄en wə·’ên tə·’ê·nîm bat·tə·’ê·nāh wə·he·‘ā·leh nā·ḇêl wā·’et·tên lā·hem ya·‘aḇ·rūm — WLC · 13
The People Respond

Why… are we just sitting here? Gather together, let us flee to the fortified cities and perish there, for the LORD our God has doomed us. He has given us poisoned water to drink, because we have sinned against the LORD.

עַל־ מָה֙ אֲנַ֣חְנוּ יֹֽשְׁבִ֔ים הֵֽאָסְפ֗וּ וְנָב֛וֹא אֶל־ הַמִּבְצָ֖ר עָרֵ֥י וְנִדְּמָה־ שָּׁ֑ם כִּי֩ יְהוָ֨ה אֱלֹהֵ֤ינוּ הֲדִמָּ֙נוּ֙ רֹ֔אשׁ מֵי־ וַיַּשְׁקֵ֣נוּ כִּ֥י חָטָ֖אנוּ לַיהוָֽה׃ ‘al- māh ’ă·naḥ·nū yō·šə·ḇîm hê·’ā·sə·p̄ū wə·nā·ḇō·w ’el- ham·miḇ·ṣār ‘ā·rê wə·nid·də·māh- šām kî Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê·nū hă·ḏim·mā·nū rōš mê- way·yaš·qê·nū kî ḥā·ṭā·nū Yah·weh — WLC · 14

We hoped for peace, but no good [has come], for a time of healing, but there was only terror.

The snorting of [enemy] horses is heard from Dan. At the sound of the neighing of mighty steeds, the whole land quakes. They come to devour the land and everything in it, the city and all who dwell in it.
