Chapter 9
A Lament over Zion

- Oh, that my head were a spring of water, and my eyes a fountain of tears! I would weep day and night over the slain daughter of my people.

If only… I had a traveler’s lodge in the wilderness, I would abandon my people and depart from them, for they are all adulterers, a crowd of faithless people.

“They bend their tongues like bows; lies prevail over truth in the land. For they proceed from evil to evil, and they do not take Me into account,” declares the LORD.

“Let everyone guard against his neighbor; do not trust any brother, for every brother deals craftily…, and every friend spreads slander.

אִ֤ישׁ הִשָּׁמֵ֔רוּ וְעַל־ מֵרֵעֵ֙הוּ֙ אַל־ תִּבְטָ֑חוּ כָּל־ אָ֖ח כִּ֤י כָל־ אָח֙ עָק֣וֹב יַעְקֹ֔ב וְכָל־ רֵ֖עַ יַהֲלֹֽךְ׃ רָכִ֥יל ’îš hiš·šā·mê·rū wə·‘al- mê·rê·‘ê·hū ’al- tiḇ·ṭā·ḥū kāl- ’āḥ kî ḵāl ’āḥ ‘ā·qō·wḇ ya‘·qōḇ wə·ḵāl rê·a‘ ya·hă·lōḵ rā·ḵîl — WLC · 4

Each one betrays his friend; no one tells the truth. They have taught their tongues to lie…; they wear themselves out committing iniquity.

וְאִ֤ישׁ יְהָתֵ֔לּוּ בְּרֵעֵ֙הוּ֙ לֹ֣א יְדַבֵּ֑רוּ וֶאֱמֶ֖ת לִמְּד֧וּ לְשׁוֹנָ֛ם דַּבֶּר־ שֶׁ֖קֶר נִלְאֽוּ׃ הַעֲוֵ֥ה wə·’îš yə·hā·ṯêl·lū bə·rê·‘ê·hū lō yə·ḏab·bê·rū we·’ĕ·meṯ lim·mə·ḏū lə·šō·w·nām dab·ber- še·qer nil·’ū ha·‘ă·wêh — WLC · 5

You dwell in the midst of deception; in their deceit they refuse to know Me,” declares the LORD.

Therefore this is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Behold, I will refine them and test them, for what else can I do because of the daughter of My people

לָכֵ֗ן כֹּ֤ה יְהוָ֣ה צְבָא֔וֹת אָמַר֙ הִנְנִ֥י צוֹרְפָ֖ם וּבְחַנְתִּ֑ים כִּֽי־ אֵ֣יךְ אֶעֱשֶׂ֔ה מִפְּנֵ֖י בַּת־ עַמִּֽי׃ lā·ḵên kōh Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ ’ā·mar hin·nî ṣō·wr·p̄ām ū·ḇə·ḥan·tîm kî- ’êḵ ’e·‘ĕ·śeh mip·pə·nê baṯ- ‘am·mî — WLC · 7

Their tongues are deadly arrows; they speak deception. With his mouth a man speaks peace to his neighbor, but in his heart he sets a trap for him.

לְשׁוֹנָ֖ם שׁוֹחֵט חֵ֥ץ דִבֵּ֑ר מִרְמָ֣ה בְּפִ֗יו יְדַבֵּ֔ר שָׁל֤וֹם אֶת־ רֵעֵ֙הוּ֙ וּבְקִרְבּ֖וֹ יָשִׂ֥ים אָרְבּֽוֹ׃ lə·šō·w·nām šō·ḥēṭ ḥêṣ ḏib·bêr mir·māh bə·p̄îw yə·ḏab·bêr šā·lō·wm ’eṯ- rê·‘ê·hū ū·ḇə·qir·bōw yā·śîm ’ā·rə·bōw — WLC · 8

Should I not punish them for these things? declares the LORD. Should I not avenge Myself on such a nation as this?”

לֹֽא־ אֶפְקָד־ בָּ֖ם הַעַל־ אֵ֥לֶּה נְאֻם־ יְהוָ֑ה לֹ֥א תִתְנַקֵּ֖ם נַפְשִֽׁי׃ס אִ֚ם בְּג֣וֹי אֲשֶׁר־ כָּזֶ֔ה lō- ’ep̄·qāḏ- bām ha·‘al- ’êl·leh nə·’um- Yah·weh lō ṯiṯ·naq·qêm nap̄·šî ’im bə·ḡō·w ’ă·šer- kā·zeh — WLC · 9

I will take up a weeping and wailing for the mountains, a dirge over the wilderness pasture, for they have been scorched so no one passes through, and the lowing of cattle is not heard. Both the birds of the air and the beasts have fled; they have gone away.

אֶשָּׂ֧א בְכִ֣י וָנֶ֗הִי עַל־ הֶ֨הָרִ֜ים קִינָ֔ה וְעַל־ מִדְבָּר֙ נְא֤וֹת כִּ֤י נִצְּתוּ֙ מִבְּלִי־ אִ֣ישׁ עֹבֵ֔ר ק֣וֹל מִקְנֶ֑ה וְלֹ֥א שָׁמְע֖וּ מֵע֤וֹף הַשָּׁמַ֙יִם֙ וְעַד־ בְּהֵמָ֔ה נָדְד֖וּ הָלָֽכוּ׃ ’eś·śā ḇə·ḵî wā·ne·hî ‘al- he·hā·rîm qî·nāh wə·‘al- miḏ·bār nə·’ō·wṯ kî niṣ·ṣə·ṯū mib·bə·lî- ’îš ‘ō·ḇêr qō·wl miq·neh wə·lō šā·mə·‘ū mê·‘ō·wp̄ haš·šā·ma·yim wə·‘aḏ- bə·hê·māh nā·ḏə·ḏū hā·lā·ḵū — WLC · 10

“And I will make Jerusalem a heap of rubble, a haunt for jackals -; and I will make the cities of Judah a desolation, without inhabitant.”

וְנָתַתִּ֧י אֶת־ יְרוּשָׁלִַ֛ם לְגַלִּ֖ים מְע֣וֹן תַּנִּ֑ים וְאֶת־ אֶתֵּ֥ן עָרֵ֧י יְהוּדָ֛ה שְׁמָמָ֖ה מִבְּלִ֖י יוֹשֵֽׁב׃ס wə·nā·ṯat·tî ’eṯ- yə·rū·šā·lim lə·ḡal·lîm mə·‘ō·wn tan·nîm wə·’eṯ- ’et·tên ‘ā·rê yə·hū·ḏāh šə·mā·māh mib·bə·lî yō·wō·šêḇ — WLC · 11

Who is the man wise enough to understand this? To whom has the mouth of the LORD spoken -, that he may explain it? Why… is the land destroyed and scorched like a desert, so no one can pass through it?

מִֽי־ הָאִ֤ישׁ הֶֽחָכָם֙ וְיָבֵ֣ן אֶת־ זֹ֔את וַאֲשֶׁ֨ר פִּֽי־ יְהוָ֛ה דִּבֶּ֧ר אֵלָ֖יו וְיַגִּדָ֑הּ עַל־ מָה֙ הָאָ֔רֶץ אָבְדָ֣ה נִצְּתָ֥ה כַמִּדְבָּ֖ר מִבְּלִ֖י עֹבֵֽר׃ס mî- hā·’îš he·ḥā·ḵām wə·yā·ḇên ’eṯ- zōṯ wa·’ă·šer pî- Yah·weh dib·ber ’ê·lāw wə·yag·gi·ḏāh ‘al- māh hā·’ā·reṣ ’ā·ḇə·ḏāh niṣ·ṣə·ṯāh ḵam·miḏ·bār mib·bə·lî ‘ō·ḇêr — WLC · 12

And the LORD answered, “It is because they have forsaken My law, which I set before them; they have not walked in it [or] obeyed My voice.
𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤏𐤋 𐤏𐤆𐤁𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤕𐤅𐤓𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤍𐤕𐤕𐤉 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤄𐤋𐤊𐤅 𐤁𐤄 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤅 𐤁𐤒𐤅𐤋𐤉
יְהוָ֔ה וַיֹּ֣אמֶר עַל־ עָזְבָם֙ אֶת־ תּ֣וֹרָתִ֔י אֲשֶׁ֥ר נָתַ֖תִּי לִפְנֵיהֶ֑ם וְלֹא־ הָ֥לְכוּ בָֽהּ׃ וְלֹא־ שָׁמְע֥וּ בְקוֹלִ֖י Yah·weh way·yō·mer ‘al- ‘ā·zə·ḇām ’eṯ- tō·w·rā·ṯî ’ă·šer nā·ṯat·tî lip̄·nê·hem wə·lō- hā·lə·ḵū ḇāh wə·lō- šā·mə·‘ū ḇə·qō·w·lî — WLC · 13

Instead, they have followed… the stubbornness of their hearts and gone after the Baals, as their fathers taught them.”

וַיֵּ֣לְכ֔וּ אַחֲרֵ֖י שְׁרִר֣וּת לִבָּ֑ם וְאַחֲרֵי֙ הַבְּעָלִ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר אֲבוֹתָֽם׃ס לִמְּד֖וּם way·yê·lə·ḵū ’a·ḥă·rê šə·ri·rūṯ lib·bām wə·’a·ḥă·rê hab·bə·‘ā·lîm ’ă·šer ’ă·ḇō·w·ṯām lim·mə·ḏūm — WLC · 14

Therefore this is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: “Behold, I will feed this people wormwood and give them poisoned water to drink.

לָכֵ֗ן כֹּֽה־ יְהוָ֤ה צְבָאוֹת֙ אֱלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל אָמַ֞ר הִנְנִ֧י מַאֲכִילָ֛ם אֶת־ הַזֶּ֖ה הָעָ֥ם לַֽעֲנָ֑ה רֹֽאשׁ׃ מֵי־ וְהִשְׁקִיתִ֖ים lā·ḵên kōh- Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ ’ĕ·lō·hê yiś·rā·’êl ’ā·mar hin·nî ma·’ă·ḵî·lām ’eṯ- haz·zeh hā·‘ām la·‘ă·nāh rōš mê- wə·hiš·qî·ṯîm — WLC · 15

I will scatter them among the nations that neither they [nor] their fathers have known, and I will send a sword after them until I have finished them off -.”

וַהֲפִֽצוֹתִים֙ בַּגּוֹיִ֔ם אֲשֶׁר֙ לֹ֣א הֵ֖מָּה וַֽאֲבוֹתָ֑ם יָֽדְע֔וּ וְשִׁלַּחְתִּ֤י הַחֶ֔רֶב אַֽחֲרֵיהֶם֙ אֶת־ עַ֥ד כַּלּוֹתִ֖י אוֹתָֽם׃פ wa·hă·p̄i·ṣō·w·ṯîm bag·gō·w·yim ’ă·šer lō hêm·māh wa·’ă·ḇō·w·ṯām yā·ḏə·‘ū wə·šil·laḥ·tî ha·ḥe·reḇ ’a·ḥă·rê·hem ’eṯ- ‘aḏ kal·lō·w·ṯî ’ō·w·ṯām — WLC · 16

This is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Take note, and summon the wailing women;… send… for the [most] skillful [among them].

כֹּ֤ה יְהוָ֣ה צְבָא֔וֹת אָמַר֙ הִתְבּֽוֹנְנ֛וּ וְקִרְא֥וּ לַמְקוֹנְנ֖וֹת וּתְבוֹאֶ֑ינָה שִׁלְח֖וּ וְתָבֽוֹאנָה׃ וְאֶל־ הַחֲכָמ֥וֹת kōh Yah·weh ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ ’ā·mar hiṯ·bō·wn·nū wə·qir·’ū lam·qō·wn·nō·wṯ ū·ṯə·ḇō·w·’e·nāh šil·ḥū wə·ṯā·ḇō·w·nāh wə·’el- ha·ḥă·ḵā·mō·wṯ — WLC · 17

Let them come quickly and take up a lament over us, that our eyes may overflow with tears, and our eyelids may gush with water.

But… let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows Me, that I am the LORD, who exercises loving devotion, justice and righteousness on the earth— for I delight in these things,” declares the LORD.
