Chapter 1

Ezekiel’s Vision by the River Kebar

1

  • In the thirtieth year, on the fifth day of the fourth month, while I was among the exiles by the River Kebar, the heavens opened and I saw visions of God.

𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤁𐤔𐤋𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤔𐤍𐤄 𐤁𐤇𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤋𐤇𐤃𐤔 𐤁𐤓𐤁𐤉𐤏𐤉 𐤅𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤁𐤕𐤅𐤊 𐤄𐤂𐤅𐤋𐤄 𐤏𐤋 𐤍𐤄𐤓 𐤊𐤁𐤓 𐤄𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤍𐤐𐤕𐤇𐤅 𐤅𐤀𐤓𐤀𐤄 𐤌𐤓𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌

וַיְהִ֣י׀ בִּשְׁלֹשִׁ֣ים שָׁנָ֗ה בַּחֲמִשָּׁ֣ה לַחֹ֔דֶשׁ בָּֽרְבִיעִי֙ וַאֲנִ֥י בְתֽוֹךְ־ הַגּוֹלָ֖ה עַל־ נְהַר־ כְּבָ֑ר הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם נִפְתְּחוּ֙ וָאֶרְאֶ֖ה מַרְא֥וֹת אֱלֹהִֽים׃ way·hî biš·lō·šîm šā·nāh ba·ḥă·miš·šāh la·ḥō·ḏeš bā·rə·ḇî·‘î wa·’ă·nî ḇə·ṯō·wḵ- hag·gō·w·lāh ‘al- nə·har- kə·ḇār haš·šā·ma·yim nip̄·tə·ḥū wā·’er·’eh mar·’ō·wṯ ’ĕ·lō·hîmWLC · 1

On the fifth day of the month— it was the fifth year of the exile of King Jehoiachin—

𐤁𐤇𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤋𐤇𐤃𐤔 𐤄𐤉𐤀 𐤄𐤇𐤌𐤉𐤔𐤉𐤕 𐤄𐤔𐤍𐤄 𐤋𐤂𐤋𐤅𐤕 𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤉𐤅𐤉𐤊𐤉𐤍

בַּחֲמִשָּׁ֖ה לַחֹ֑דֶשׁ הִ֚יא הַחֲמִישִׁ֔ית הַשָּׁנָ֣ה לְגָל֖וּת הַמֶּ֥לֶךְ יוֹיָכִֽין׃ ba·ḥă·miš·šāh la·ḥō·ḏeš hî ha·ḥă·mî·šîṯ haš·šā·nāh lə·ḡā·lūṯ ham·me·leḵ yō·w·yā·ḵînWLC · 2

the word of the LORD came directly… to Ezekiel the priest, the son of Buzi, in the land of the Chaldeans by the River Kebar. And there the LORD’s hand was upon him.

דְבַר־ יְ֠הוָה הָיֹ֣ה הָיָ֣ה אֶל־ יְחֶזְקֵ֨אל הַכֹּהֵ֛ן בֶּן־ בּוּזִ֧י בְּאֶ֥רֶץ כַּשְׂדִּ֖ים עַל־ נְהַר־ כְּבָ֑ר שָׁ֖ם יְהוָֽה׃ יַד־ וַתְּהִ֥י עָלָ֛יו ḏə·ḇar- Yah·weh hā·yōh hā·yāh ’el- yə·ḥez·qêl hak·kō·hên ben- bū·zî bə·’e·reṣ kaś·dîm ‘al- nə·har- kə·ḇār šām Yah·weh yaḏ- wat·tə·hî ‘ā·lāwWLC · 3

The Four Living Creatures

I looked and saw a whirlwind… coming from the north, a great cloud with fire flashing back and forth and brilliant light all around it. In the center of the fire was a gleam like amber…,

𐤅𐤀𐤓𐤀 𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤓𐤅𐤇 𐤎𐤏𐤓𐤄 𐤁𐤀𐤄 𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤑𐤐𐤅𐤍 𐤂𐤃𐤅𐤋 𐤏𐤍𐤍 𐤅𐤀𐤔 𐤌𐤕𐤋𐤒𐤇𐤕 𐤅𐤍𐤂𐤄 𐤎𐤁𐤉𐤁 𐤋𐤅 𐤅𐤌𐤕𐤅𐤊𐤄 𐤄𐤀𐤔 𐤊𐤏𐤉𐤍 𐤄𐤇𐤔𐤌𐤋 𐤌𐤕𐤅𐤊

וָאֵ֡רֶא וְהִנֵּה֩ ר֨וּחַ סְעָרָ֜ה בָּאָ֣ה מִן־ הַצָּפ֗וֹן גָּדוֹל֙ עָנָ֤ן וְאֵ֣שׁ מִתְלַקַּ֔חַת וְנֹ֥גַֽהּ סָבִ֑יב ל֖וֹ וּמִ֨תּוֹכָ֔הּ הָאֵֽשׁ׃ כְּעֵ֥ין הַחַשְׁמַ֖ל מִתּ֥וֹךְ wā·’ê·re wə·hin·nêh rū·aḥ sə·‘ā·rāh bā·’āh min- haṣ·ṣā·p̄ō·wn gā·ḏō·wl ‘ā·nān wə·’êš miṯ·laq·qa·ḥaṯ wə·nō·ḡah sā·ḇîḇ lōw ū·mit·tō·w·ḵāh hā·’êš kə·‘ên ha·ḥaš·mal mit·tō·wḵWLC · 4

and within it [was] the form of four living creatures. And this [was] their appearance: They had a human form,

𐤅𐤌𐤕𐤅𐤊𐤄 𐤃𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤓𐤁𐤏 𐤇𐤉𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤆𐤄 𐤌𐤓𐤀𐤉𐤄𐤍 𐤋𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤃𐤌𐤅𐤕

וּמִ֨תּוֹכָ֔הּ דְּמ֖וּת אַרְבַּ֣ע חַיּ֑וֹת וְזֶה֙ מַרְאֵֽיהֶ֔ן לָהֵֽנָּה׃ אָדָ֖ם דְּמ֥וּת ū·mit·tō·w·ḵāh də·mūṯ ’ar·ba‘ ḥay·yō·wṯ wə·zeh mar·’ê·hen lā·hên·nāh ’ā·ḏām də·mūṯWLC · 5

but each had four faces and four wings…

𐤋𐤀𐤇𐤕 𐤅𐤀𐤓𐤁𐤏𐤄 𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤓𐤁𐤏 𐤊𐤍𐤐𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤀𐤇𐤕 𐤋𐤄𐤌

לְאֶחָ֑ת וְאַרְבָּעָ֥ה פָנִ֖ים וְאַרְבַּ֥ע כְּנָפַ֖יִם לְאַחַ֥ת לָהֶֽם׃ lə·’e·ḥāṯ wə·’ar·bā·‘āh p̄ā·nîm wə·’ar·ba‘ kə·nā·p̄a·yim lə·’a·ḥaṯ lā·hemWLC · 6

Their legs were straight, and the soles of their feet were like the hooves… of a calf, gleaming like polished bronze.

וְרַגְלֵיהֶ֖ם יְשָׁרָ֑ה וְכַ֣ף רֶ֣גֶל כְּכַף֙ רֶ֣גֶל רַגְלֵיהֶ֗ם עֵ֔גֶל וְנֹ֣צְצִ֔ים כְּעֵ֖ין קָלָֽל׃ נְחֹ֥שֶׁת wə·raḡ·lê·hem yə·šā·rāh wə·ḵap̄ re·ḡel kə·ḵap̄ re·ḡel raḡ·lê·hem ‘ê·ḡel wə·nō·ṣə·ṣîm kə·‘ên qā·lāl nə·ḥō·šeṯWLC · 7

Under their wings on their four sides they had human hands. All four [living creatures] had faces and wings,

𐤌𐤕𐤇𐤕 𐤊𐤍𐤐𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤏𐤋 𐤀𐤓𐤁𐤏𐤕 𐤓𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤃𐤅 𐤋𐤀𐤓𐤁𐤏𐤕𐤌 𐤅𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤅𐤊𐤍𐤐𐤉𐤄𐤌

מִתַּ֙חַת֙ כַּנְפֵיהֶ֔ם עַ֖ל אַרְבַּ֣עַת רִבְעֵיהֶ֑ם אָדָ֗ם וְיָדוֹ לְאַרְבַּעְתָּֽם׃ וּפְנֵיהֶ֥ם וְכַנְפֵיהֶ֖ם mit·ta·ḥaṯ kan·p̄ê·hem ‘al ’ar·ba·‘aṯ riḇ·‘ê·hem ’ā·ḏām wə·yå̄·ḏō lə·’ar·ba‘·tām ū·p̄ə·nê·hem wə·ḵan·p̄ê·hemWLC · 8

and their wings were touching one another… They did not turn as they moved; each… one went straight ahead.

𐤊𐤍𐤐𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤇𐤁𐤓𐤕 𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤇𐤅𐤕𐤄 𐤀𐤔𐤄 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤎𐤁𐤅 𐤁𐤋𐤊𐤕𐤍 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤋𐤊𐤅 𐤏𐤁𐤓 𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤅

כַּנְפֵיהֶ֑ם חֹֽבְרֹ֛ת אֶל־ אֲחוֹתָ֖הּ אִשָּׁ֥ה לֹא־ יִסַּ֣בּוּ בְלֶכְתָּ֔ן אִ֛ישׁ אֶל־ יֵלֵֽכוּ׃ עֵ֥בֶר פָּנָ֖יו kan·p̄ê·hem ḥō·ḇə·rōṯ ’el- ’ă·ḥō·w·ṯāh ’iš·šāh lō- yis·sab·bū ḇə·leḵ·tān ’îš ’el- yê·lê·ḵū ‘ê·ḇer pā·nāwWLC · 9

The form of their faces was that of a man, and each of the four had the face of a lion on the right side, the face of an ox on the left side, and also the face of an eagle…

𐤅𐤃𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤋𐤀𐤓𐤁𐤏𐤕𐤌 𐤅𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤓𐤉𐤄 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤍 𐤅𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤔𐤅𐤓 𐤌𐤄𐤔𐤌𐤀𐤅𐤋 𐤋𐤀𐤓𐤁𐤏𐤕𐤍 𐤅𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤍𐤔𐤓 𐤋𐤀𐤓𐤁𐤏𐤕𐤍

וּדְמ֣וּת פְּנֵיהֶם֮ פְּנֵ֣י אָדָם֒ לְאַרְבַּעְתָּ֔ם וּפְנֵ֨י אַרְיֵ֤ה אֶל־ הַיָּמִין֙ וּפְנֵי־ שׁ֥וֹר מֵֽהַשְּׂמֹ֖אול לְאַרְבַּעְתָּ֑ן וּפְנֵי־ נֶ֖שֶׁר לְאַרְבַּעְתָּֽן׃ ū·ḏə·mūṯ pə·nê·hem pə·nê ’ā·ḏām lə·’ar·ba‘·tām ū·p̄ə·nê ’ar·yêh ’el- hay·yā·mîn ū·p̄ə·nê- šō·wr mê·haś·śə·mō·wl lə·’ar·ba‘·tān ū·p̄ə·nê- ne·šer lə·’ar·ba‘·tānWLC · 10

Such were their faces. Their wings were spread upward; each [had] two [wings] touching the wings of the creature on either side, and two wings covering its body.

𐤅𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤅𐤊𐤍𐤐𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤐𐤓𐤃𐤅𐤕 𐤌𐤋𐤌𐤏𐤋𐤄 𐤋𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤔𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤇𐤁𐤓𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤅𐤔𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤊𐤎𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤕 𐤂𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤉𐤄𐤍𐤄

וּפְנֵיהֶ֕ם וְכַנְפֵיהֶ֥ם פְּרֻד֖וֹת מִלְמָ֑עְלָה לְאִ֗ישׁ שְׁ֚תַּיִם חֹבְר֣וֹת אִ֔ישׁ וּשְׁתַּ֣יִם מְכַסּ֔וֹת אֵ֖ת גְּוִיֹתֵיהֶֽנָה׃ ū·p̄ə·nê·hem wə·ḵan·p̄ê·hem pə·ru·ḏō·wṯ mil·mā·‘ə·lāh lə·’îš šə·ta·yim ḥō·ḇə·rō·wṯ ’îš ū·šə·ta·yim mə·ḵas·sō·wṯ ’êṯ gə·wi·yō·ṯē·hɛ·nå̄hWLC · 11

Each [creature] went straight ahead… Wherever -… the spirit would go, they would go, without turning as they moved.

𐤅𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤉𐤋𐤊𐤅 𐤀𐤋 𐤏𐤁𐤓 𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤅 𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤔𐤌𐤄 𐤄𐤓𐤅𐤇 𐤋𐤋𐤊𐤕 𐤉𐤋𐤊𐤅 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤎𐤁𐤅 𐤁𐤋𐤊𐤕𐤍

וְאִ֛ישׁ יֵלֵ֑כוּ אֶל־ עֵ֥בֶר פָּנָ֖יו אֶ֣ל אֲשֶׁר֩ יִֽהְיֶה־ שָׁ֨מָּה הָר֤וּחַ לָלֶ֙כֶת֙ יֵלֵ֔כוּ לֹ֥א יִסַּ֖בּוּ בְּלֶכְתָּֽן׃ wə·’îš yê·lê·ḵū ’el- ‘ê·ḇer pā·nāw ’el ’ă·šer yih·yeh- šām·māh hā·rū·aḥ lā·le·ḵeṯ yê·lê·ḵū lō yis·sab·bū bə·leḵ·tānWLC · 12

In the midst of the living creatures was the appearance of glowing coals of fire, [or] of torches… Fire moved back and forth between the living creatures; it was bright, and lightning flashed out of it.

𐤅𐤃𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤄𐤇𐤉𐤅𐤕 𐤌𐤓𐤀𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤀𐤔 𐤊𐤂𐤇𐤋𐤉 𐤁𐤏𐤓𐤅𐤕 𐤊𐤌𐤓𐤀𐤄 𐤄𐤋𐤐𐤃𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤉𐤀 𐤋𐤀𐤔 𐤌𐤕𐤄𐤋𐤊𐤕 𐤁𐤉𐤍 𐤄𐤇𐤉𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤍𐤂𐤄 𐤁𐤓𐤒 𐤉𐤅𐤑𐤀 𐤅𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤀𐤔

וּדְמ֨וּת הַחַיּ֜וֹת מַרְאֵיהֶ֣ם אֵ֗שׁ כְּגַחֲלֵי־ בֹּֽעֲרוֹת֙ כְּמַרְאֵ֣ה הַלַּפִּדִ֔ים הִ֕יא לָאֵ֔שׁ מִתְהַלֶּ֖כֶת בֵּ֣ין הַחַיּ֑וֹת וְנֹ֣גַהּ בָרָֽק׃ יוֹצֵ֥א וּמִן־ הָאֵ֖שׁ ū·ḏə·mūṯ ha·ḥay·yō·wṯ mar·’ê·hem ’êš kə·ḡa·ḥă·lê- bō·‘ă·rō·wṯ kə·mar·’êh hal·lap·pi·ḏîm hî lā·’êš miṯ·hal·le·ḵeṯ bên ha·ḥay·yō·wṯ wə·nō·ḡah ḇā·rāq yō·w·ṣê ū·min- hā·’êšWLC · 13

The creatures were darting back and forth… as quickly as flashes of lightning.

וְהַחַיּ֖וֹת רָצ֣וֹא וָשׁ֑וֹב כְּמַרְאֵ֖ה הַבָּזָֽק׃ wə·ha·ḥay·yō·wṯ rā·ṣō·w wā·šō·wḇ kə·mar·’êh hab·bā·zāqWLC · 14

The Four Wheels

When I looked at the living creatures, I saw a wheel on the ground beside each creature with its four faces.

𐤅𐤀𐤓𐤀 𐤄𐤇𐤉𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤀𐤇𐤃 𐤀𐤅𐤐𐤍 𐤁𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤀𐤑𐤋 𐤄𐤇𐤉𐤅𐤕 𐤋𐤀𐤓𐤁𐤏𐤕 𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤅

וָאֵ֖רֶא הַחַיּ֑וֹת וְהִנֵּה֩ אֶחָ֥ד אוֹפַ֨ן בָּאָ֛רֶץ אֵ֥צֶל הַחַיּ֖וֹת לְאַרְבַּ֥עַת פָּנָֽיו׃ wā·’ê·re ha·ḥay·yō·wṯ wə·hin·nêh ’e·ḥāḏ ’ō·w·p̄an bā·’ā·reṣ ’ê·ṣel ha·ḥay·yō·wṯ lə·’ar·ba·‘aṯ pā·nāwWLC · 15

The workmanship of the wheels looked like the gleam of beryl, and all four had the same likeness. Their workmanship looked like… a wheel within a wheel.

𐤅𐤌𐤏𐤔𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤄𐤀𐤅𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤓𐤀𐤄 𐤊𐤏𐤉𐤍 𐤕𐤓𐤔𐤉𐤔 𐤋𐤀𐤓𐤁𐤏𐤕𐤍 𐤀𐤇𐤃 𐤅𐤃𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤌𐤏𐤔𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤅𐤌𐤓𐤀𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤊𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤄𐤀𐤅𐤐𐤍 𐤁𐤕𐤅𐤊 𐤄𐤀𐤅𐤐𐤍

וּמַעֲשֵׂיהֶם֙ הָאוֹפַנִּ֤ים מַרְאֵ֨ה כְּעֵ֣ין תַּרְשִׁ֔ישׁ לְאַרְבַּעְתָּ֑ן אֶחָ֖ד וּדְמ֥וּת וּמַ֣עֲשֵׂיהֶ֔ם וּמַרְאֵיהֶם֙ כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר יִהְיֶ֥ה הָאוֹפַ֖ן בְּת֥וֹךְ הָאוֹפָֽן׃ ū·ma·‘ă·śê·hem hā·’ō·w·p̄an·nîm mar·’êh kə·‘ên tar·šîš lə·’ar·ba‘·tān ’e·ḥāḏ ū·ḏə·mūṯ ū·ma·‘ă·śê·hem ū·mar·’ê·hem ka·’ă·šer yih·yeh hā·’ō·w·p̄an bə·ṯō·wḵ hā·’ō·w·p̄ānWLC · 16

As they moved, they went in any of the four directions, without pivoting as they moved.

𐤁𐤋𐤊𐤕𐤌 𐤉𐤋𐤊𐤅 𐤏𐤋 𐤀𐤓𐤁𐤏𐤕 𐤓𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤄𐤍 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤎𐤁𐤅 𐤁𐤋𐤊𐤕𐤍

בְּלֶכְתָּ֣ם יֵלֵ֑כוּ עַל־ אַרְבַּ֥עַת רִבְעֵיהֶ֖ן לֹ֥א יִסַּ֖בּוּ בְּלֶכְתָּֽן׃ bə·leḵ·tām yê·lê·ḵū ‘al- ’ar·ba·‘aṯ riḇ·‘ê·hen lō yis·sab·bū bə·leḵ·tānWLC · 17

Their rims were high and awesome,… and all four rims were full of eyes all around.

𐤅𐤂𐤁𐤉𐤄𐤍 𐤅𐤂𐤁𐤄 𐤋𐤄𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤀𐤄 𐤋𐤄𐤌 𐤋𐤀𐤓𐤁𐤏𐤕𐤍 𐤅𐤂𐤁𐤕𐤌 𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤕 𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤎𐤁𐤉𐤁

וְגַ֨בֵּיהֶ֔ן וְגֹ֥בַהּ לָהֶ֖ם וְיִרְאָ֣ה לָהֶ֑ם לְאַרְבַּעְתָּֽן׃ וְגַבֹּתָ֗ם מְלֵאֹ֥ת עֵינַ֛יִם סָבִ֖יב wə·ḡab·bê·hen wə·ḡō·ḇah lā·hem wə·yir·’āh lā·hem lə·’ar·ba‘·tān wə·ḡab·bō·ṯām mə·lê·’ōṯ ‘ê·na·yim sā·ḇîḇWLC · 18

So as the living creatures moved, the wheels moved beside them, and when the creatures rose from the ground, the wheels also rose.

Wherever -… the spirit would go, they would go…, and the wheels would rise alongside them, because the spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels.

עַ֣ל אֲשֶׁר֩ יִֽהְיֶה־ שָּׁ֨ם הָר֤וּחַ לָלֶ֙כֶת֙ יֵלֵ֔כוּ שָׁ֥מָּה הָר֖וּחַ לָלֶ֑כֶת וְהָאוֹפַנִּ֗ים יִנָּשְׂאוּ֙ לְעֻמָּתָ֔ם כִּ֛י ר֥וּחַ הַחַיָּ֖ה בָּאוֹפַנִּֽים׃ ‘al ’ă·šer yih·yeh- šām hā·rū·aḥ lā·le·ḵeṯ yê·lê·ḵū šām·māh hā·rū·aḥ lā·le·ḵeṯ wə·hā·’ō·w·p̄an·nîm yin·nā·śə·’ū lə·‘um·mā·ṯām kî rū·aḥ ha·ḥay·yāh bā·’ō·w·p̄an·nîmWLC · 20

When the creatures moved, the wheels moved; when the creatures stood still, the wheels stood still; and when the creatures rose from the ground, the wheels rose alongside them, because the spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels.

Spread out above… the heads of the living creatures [was] the likeness of an awesome expanse, gleaming like crystal.

𐤍𐤈𐤅𐤉 𐤏𐤋 𐤌𐤋𐤌𐤏𐤋𐤄 𐤓𐤀𐤔𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤏𐤋 𐤓𐤀𐤔𐤉 𐤄𐤇𐤉𐤄 𐤅𐤃𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤄𐤍𐤅𐤓𐤀 𐤓𐤒𐤉𐤏 𐤊𐤏𐤉𐤍 𐤄𐤒𐤓𐤇

נָט֥וּי עַל־ מִלְמָֽעְלָה׃ רָאשֵׁיהֶ֖ם עַל־ רָאשֵׁ֤י הַחַיָּה֙ וּדְמ֞וּת הַנּוֹרָ֑א רָקִ֔יעַ כְּעֵ֖ין הַקֶּ֣רַח nā·ṭui ‘al- mil·mā·‘ə·lāh rā·šê·hem ‘al- rā·šê ha·ḥay·yāh ū·ḏə·mūṯ han·nō·w·rā rā·qî·a‘ kə·‘ên haq·qe·raḥWLC · 22

And under the expanse, their wings stretched out toward one another. Each one also had two [wings] covering its body.

וְתַ֙חַת֙ הָרָקִ֔יעַ כַּנְפֵיהֶ֣ם יְשָׁר֔וֹת אֶל־ אִשָּׁ֖ה אֲחוֹתָ֑הּ לְאִ֗ישׁ שְׁתַּ֤יִם מְכַסּוֹת֙ לָהֵ֔נָּה וּלְאִ֗ישׁ שְׁתַּ֤יִם מְכַסּוֹת֙ לָהֵ֔נָּה אֵ֖ת גְּוִיֹּתֵיהֶֽם׃ wə·ṯa·ḥaṯ hā·rā·qî·a‘ kan·p̄ê·hem yə·šā·rō·wṯ ’el- ’iš·šāh ’ă·ḥō·w·ṯāh lə·’îš šə·ta·yim mə·ḵas·sō·wṯ lā·hên·nāh ū·lə·’îš šə·ta·yim mə·ḵas·sō·wṯ lā·hên·nāh ’êṯ gə·wî·yō·ṯê·hemWLC · 23

When [the creatures] moved, I heard the sound of their wings like the roar of many waters, like the voice of the Almighty, like the tumult… of an army. When they stood still, they lowered their wings.

בְּלֶכְתָּ֔ם וָאֶשְׁמַ֣ע אֶת־ ק֣וֹל כַּנְפֵיהֶ֡ם כְּקוֹל֩ רַבִּ֤ים מַ֨יִם כְּקוֹל־ שַׁדַּי֙ ק֥וֹל הֲמֻלָּ֖ה כְּק֣וֹל מַחֲנֶ֑ה בְּעָמְדָ֖ם תְּרַפֶּ֥ינָה כַנְפֵיהֶֽן׃ bə·leḵ·tām wā·’eš·ma‘ ’eṯ- qō·wl kan·p̄ê·hem kə·qō·wl rab·bîm ma·yim kə·qō·wl- šad·day qō·wl hă·mul·lāh kə·qō·wl ma·ḥă·neh bə·‘ā·mə·ḏām tə·rap·pe·nāh ḵan·p̄ê·henWLC · 24

And there came a voice from above the expanse over their heads as they stood still with their wings lowered.

וַיְהִי־ ק֕וֹל מֵעַ֕ל לָרָקִ֖יעַ אֲשֶׁ֣ר עַל־ רֹאשָׁ֑ם בְּעָמְדָ֖ם כַנְפֵיהֶֽן׃ תְּרַפֶּ֥ינָה way·hî- qō·wl mê·‘al lā·rā·qî·a‘ ’ă·šer ‘al- rō·šām bə·‘ā·mə·ḏām ḵan·p̄ê·hen tə·rap·pe·nāhWLC · 25

Above the expanse over their heads [was] the likeness of a throne… with the appearance of sapphire…, [and] on the throne high above was a figure like that of a man…

וּמִמַּ֗עַל לָרָקִ֙יעַ֙ עַל־ רֹאשָׁ֔ם אֲשֶׁ֣ר דְּמ֣וּת כִּסֵּ֑א וְעַל֙ כְּמַרְאֵ֥ה סַפִּ֖יר אֶֽבֶן־ הַכִּסֵּ֔א עָלָ֖יו דְּמ֣וּת כְּמַרְאֵ֥ה אָדָ֛ם דְּמ֞וּת מִלְמָֽעְלָה׃ ū·mim·ma·‘al lā·rā·qî·a‘ ‘al- rō·šām ’ă·šer də·mūṯ kis·sê wə·‘al kə·mar·’êh sap·pîr ’e·ḇen- hak·kis·sê ‘ā·lāw də·mūṯ kə·mar·’êh ’ā·ḏām də·mūṯ mil·mā·‘ə·lāhWLC · 26

From what seemed to be His waist up, I saw a gleam like amber, with what looked like fire within it all around. And from what seemed to be His waist down, I saw what looked like fire; and brilliant light surrounded Him.

מִמַּרְאֵ֥ה מָתְנָ֖יו וּלְמָ֑עְלָה וָאֵ֣רֶא׀ כְּעֵ֣ין חַשְׁמַ֗ל כְּמַרְאֵה־ אֵ֤שׁ בֵּֽית־ לָהּ֙ סָבִ֔יב וּמִמַּרְאֵ֤ה מָתְנָיו֙ וּלְמַ֔טָּה רָאִ֙יתִי֙ כְּמַרְאֵה־ אֵ֔שׁ וְנֹ֥גַֽהּ ל֖וֹ סָבִֽיב׃ mim·mar·’êh mā·ṯə·nāw ū·lə·mā·‘ə·lāh wā·’ê·re kə·‘ên ḥaš·mal kə·mar·’êh- ’êš bêṯ- lāh sā·ḇîḇ ū·mim·mar·’êh mā·ṯə·nāw ū·lə·maṭ·ṭāh rā·’î·ṯî kə·mar·’êh- ’êš wə·nō·ḡah lōw sā·ḇîḇWLC · 27

The appearance of the brilliant light all around Him was like that of a rainbow in a cloud on a rainy day. This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the LORD. And when I saw it, I fell facedown… and heard a voice speaking.
