Chapter 10

God’s Glory Exits the Temple

1

And I looked and saw above the expanse, above the heads of the cherubim, the likeness of a throne of sapphire… -.

𐤅𐤀𐤓𐤀𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤓𐤒𐤉𐤏 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤏𐤋 𐤓𐤀𐤔 𐤄𐤊𐤓𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤃𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤊𐤎𐤀 𐤎𐤐𐤉𐤓 𐤊𐤌𐤓𐤀𐤄 𐤊𐤀𐤁𐤍 𐤍𐤓𐤀𐤄 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤌

וָאֶרְאֶ֗ה וְהִנֵּ֤ה אֶל־ הָרָקִ֙יעַ֙ אֲשֶׁר֙ עַל־ רֹ֣אשׁ הַכְּרֻבִ֔ים דְּמ֣וּת כִּסֵּ֑א סַפִּ֔יר כְּמַרְאֵ֖ה כְּאֶ֣בֶן נִרְאָ֖ה עֲלֵיהֶֽם׃ wā·’er·’eh wə·hin·nêh ’el- hā·rā·qî·a‘ ’ă·šer ‘al- rōš hak·kə·ru·ḇîm də·mūṯ kis·sê sap·pîr kə·mar·’êh kə·’e·ḇen nir·’āh ‘ă·lê·hemWLC · 1

And [the LORD] said to the man clothed in linen -, “Go inside the wheelwork… beneath the cherubim. Fill your hands with burning coals… from among the cherubim and scatter them over the city.” And as I watched, he went in.

וַיֹּ֜אמֶר אֶל־ הָאִ֣ישׁ׀ לְבֻ֣שׁ הַבַּדִּ֗ים וַיֹּ֡אמֶר בֹּא֩ אֶל־ בֵּינ֨וֹת לַגַּלְגַּ֜ל אֶל־ תַּ֣חַת לַכְּר֗וּב וּמַלֵּ֨א חָפְנֶ֤יךָ גַֽחֲלֵי־ אֵשׁ֙ מִבֵּינ֣וֹת לַכְּרֻבִ֔ים וּזְרֹ֖ק עַל־ הָעִ֑יר לְעֵינָֽי׃ וַיָּבֹ֖א way·yō·mer ’el- hā·’îš lə·ḇuš hab·bad·dîm way·yō·mer bō ’el- bê·nō·wṯ lag·gal·gal ’el- ta·ḥaṯ lak·kə·rūḇ ū·mal·lê ḥā·p̄ə·ne·ḵā ḡa·ḥă·lê- ’êš mib·bê·nō·wṯ lak·kə·ru·ḇîm ū·zə·rōq ‘al- hā·‘îr lə·‘ê·nāy way·yā·ḇōWLC · 2

Now when the man went in, the cherubim were standing on the south side of the temple, and a cloud filled the inner court.

𐤄𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤁𐤁𐤀𐤅 𐤅𐤄𐤊𐤓𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤌𐤃𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤍 𐤋𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤅𐤄𐤏𐤍𐤍 𐤌𐤋𐤀 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤕 𐤄𐤇𐤑𐤓

הָאִ֑ישׁ בְּבֹא֣וֹ וְהַכְּרֻבִ֗ים עֹֽמְדִ֛ים מִימִ֥ין לַבַּ֖יִת וְהֶעָנָ֣ן מָלֵ֔א אֶת־ הַפְּנִימִֽית׃ הֶחָצֵ֖ר hā·’îš bə·ḇō·’ōw wə·hak·kə·ru·ḇîm ‘ō·mə·ḏîm mî·mîn lab·ba·yiṯ wə·he·‘ā·nān mā·lê ’eṯ- hap·pə·nî·mîṯ he·ḥā·ṣêrWLC · 3

Then the glory of the LORD rose from above the cherubim [and stood] over the threshold of the temple. The temple was filled with the cloud, and the court was filled with the brightness of the glory of the LORD.

𐤊𐤁𐤅𐤃 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤌 𐤌𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤊𐤓𐤅𐤁 𐤏𐤋 𐤌𐤐𐤕𐤍 𐤄𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤄𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤌𐤋𐤀 𐤄𐤏𐤍𐤍 𐤅𐤄𐤇𐤑𐤓 𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤍𐤂𐤄 𐤊𐤁𐤅𐤃 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄

כְּבוֹד־ יְהוָה֙ וַיָּ֤רָם מֵעַ֣ל הַכְּר֔וּב עַ֖ל מִפְתַּ֣ן הַבָּ֑יִת הַבַּ֙יִת֙ אֶת־ וַיִּמָּלֵ֤א הֶ֣עָנָ֔ן וְהֶֽחָצֵר֙ מָֽלְאָ֔ה אֶת־ נֹ֖גַהּ כְּב֥וֹד יְהוָֽה׃ kə·ḇō·wḏ- Yah·weh way·yā·rām mê·‘al hak·kə·rūḇ ‘al mip̄·tan hab·bā·yiṯ hab·ba·yiṯ ’eṯ- way·yim·mā·lê he·‘ā·nān wə·he·ḥā·ṣêr mā·lə·’āh ’eṯ- nō·ḡah kə·ḇō·wḏ Yah·wehWLC · 4

The sound of the wings of the cherubim could be heard as far as the outer court, like the voice of God Almighty when He speaks.

𐤅𐤒𐤅𐤋 𐤊𐤍𐤐𐤉 𐤄𐤊𐤓𐤅𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤍𐤔𐤌𐤏 𐤏𐤃 𐤄𐤇𐤉𐤑𐤍𐤄 𐤄𐤇𐤑𐤓 𐤊𐤒𐤅𐤋 𐤀𐤋 𐤔𐤃𐤉 𐤁𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤅

וְקוֹל֙ כַּנְפֵ֣י הַכְּרוּבִ֔ים נִשְׁמַ֕ע עַד־ הַחִיצֹנָ֑ה הֶחָצֵ֖ר כְּק֥וֹל אֵל־ שַׁדַּ֖י בְּדַבְּרֽוֹ׃ wə·qō·wl kan·p̄ê hak·kə·rū·ḇîm niš·ma‘ ‘aḏ- ha·ḥî·ṣō·nāh he·ḥā·ṣêr kə·qō·wl ’êl- šad·day bə·ḏab·bə·rōwWLC · 5

When the LORD commanded the man clothed in linen, saying, “Take fire from within the wheelwork, from among the cherubim,” the man went in and stood beside a wheel.

𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤁𐤑𐤅𐤕𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤋𐤁𐤔 𐤄𐤁𐤃𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤒𐤇 𐤀𐤔 𐤌𐤁𐤉𐤍𐤅𐤕 𐤋𐤂𐤋𐤂𐤋 𐤌𐤁𐤉𐤍𐤅𐤕 𐤋𐤊𐤓𐤅𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤀 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤌𐤃 𐤀𐤑𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤅𐤐𐤍

וַיְהִ֗י בְּצַוֺּתוֹ֙ אֶת־ הָאִ֤ישׁ לְבֻֽשׁ־ הַבַּדִּים֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר קַ֥ח אֵשׁ֙ מִבֵּינ֣וֹת לַגַּלְגַּ֔ל מִבֵּינ֖וֹת לַכְּרוּבִ֑ים וַיָּבֹא֙ וַֽיַּעֲמֹ֔ד אֵ֖צֶל הָאוֹפָֽן׃ way·hî bə·ṣaw·wō·ṯōw ’eṯ- hā·’îš lə·ḇuš- hab·bad·dîm lê·mōr qaḥ ’êš mib·bê·nō·wṯ lag·gal·gal mib·bê·nō·wṯ lak·kə·rū·ḇîm way·yā·ḇō way·ya·‘ă·mōḏ ’ê·ṣel hā·’ō·w·p̄ānWLC · 6

Then one of the cherubim reached out his hand and took [some of] the fire that was among [them]. And he put it into the hands of the man clothed in linen, who received it and went out.

הַכְּר֨וּב אֶת־ וַיִּשְׁלַח֩ יָד֜וֹ מִבֵּינ֣וֹת לַכְּרוּבִ֗ים וַיִּשָּׂא֙ אֶל־ הָאֵשׁ֙ אֲשֶׁר֙ בֵּינ֣וֹת הַכְּרֻבִ֔ים וַיִּתֵּ֔ן אֶל־ חָפְנֵ֖י לְבֻ֣שׁ הַבַּדִּ֑ים וַיִּקַּ֖ח וַיֵּצֵֽא׃ hak·kə·rūḇ ’eṯ- way·yiš·laḥ yā·ḏōw mib·bê·nō·wṯ lak·kə·rū·ḇîm way·yiś·śā ’el- hā·’êš ’ă·šer bê·nō·wṯ hak·kə·ru·ḇîm way·yit·tên ’el- ḥā·p̄ə·nê lə·ḇuš hab·bad·dîm way·yiq·qaḥ way·yê·ṣêWLC · 7

(The cherubim appeared to have the form of human hands under their wings.)

𐤋𐤊𐤓𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤀 𐤕𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤕 𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤉𐤃 𐤕𐤇𐤕 𐤊𐤍𐤐𐤉𐤄𐤌

לַכְּרֻבִ֑ים וַיֵּרָ֖א תַּבְנִית֙ אָדָ֔ם יַד־ תַּ֖חַת כַּנְפֵיהֶֽם׃ lak·kə·ru·ḇîm way·yê·rā taḇ·nîṯ ’ā·ḏām yaḏ- ta·ḥaṯ kan·p̄ê·hemWLC · 8

Then I looked and saw four wheels beside the cherubim, one wheel beside each cherub. -… And the wheels gleamed like a beryl stone.

𐤅𐤀𐤓𐤀𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤀𐤓𐤁𐤏𐤄 𐤀𐤅𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤑𐤋 𐤄𐤊𐤓𐤅𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤇𐤃 𐤀𐤅𐤐𐤍 𐤀𐤑𐤋 𐤀𐤇𐤃 𐤄𐤊𐤓𐤅𐤁 𐤅𐤀𐤅𐤐𐤍 𐤀𐤇𐤃 𐤀𐤑𐤋 𐤄𐤊𐤓𐤅𐤁 𐤀𐤇𐤃 𐤅𐤌𐤓𐤀𐤄 𐤄𐤀𐤅𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤊𐤏𐤉𐤍 𐤕𐤓𐤔𐤉𐤔 𐤀𐤁𐤍

וָאֶרְאֶ֗ה וְהִנֵּ֨ה אַרְבָּעָ֣ה אוֹפַנִּים֮ אֵ֣צֶל הַכְּרוּבִים֒ אֶחָ֗ד אוֹפַ֣ן אֵ֚צֶל אֶחָ֔ד הַכְּר֣וּב וְאוֹפַ֣ן אֶחָ֔ד אֵ֖צֶל הַכְּר֣וּב אֶחָ֑ד וּמַרְאֵה֙ הָא֣וֹפַנִּ֔ים כְּעֵ֖ין תַּרְשִֽׁישׁ׃ אֶ֥בֶן wā·’er·’eh wə·hin·nêh ’ar·bā·‘āh ’ō·w·p̄an·nîm ’ê·ṣel hak·kə·rū·ḇîm ’e·ḥāḏ ’ō·w·p̄an ’ê·ṣel ’e·ḥāḏ hak·kə·rūḇ wə·’ō·w·p̄an ’e·ḥāḏ ’ê·ṣel hak·kə·rūḇ ’e·ḥāḏ ū·mar·’êh hā·’ō·w·p̄an·nîm kə·‘ên tar·šîš ’e·ḇenWLC · 9

[As for] their appearance, all four had the same form, like… a wheel within a wheel.

𐤅𐤌𐤓𐤀𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤋𐤀𐤓𐤁𐤏𐤕𐤌 𐤀𐤇𐤃 𐤃𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤊𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤄𐤀𐤅𐤐𐤍 𐤁𐤕𐤅𐤊 𐤄𐤀𐤅𐤐𐤍

וּמַ֨רְאֵיהֶ֔ם לְאַרְבַּעְתָּ֑ם אֶחָ֖ד דְּמ֥וּת כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר יִהְיֶ֥ה הָאוֹפַ֖ן בְּת֥וֹךְ הָאוֹפָֽן׃ ū·mar·’ê·hem lə·’ar·ba‘·tām ’e·ḥāḏ də·mūṯ ka·’ă·šer yih·yeh hā·’ō·w·p̄an bə·ṯō·wḵ hā·’ō·w·p̄ānWLC · 10

When they moved, they would go in any of the four directions, without turning as they moved. For wherever the head faced, [the cherubim] would go in that direction, without turning as they moved.

𐤁𐤋𐤊𐤕𐤌 𐤉𐤋𐤊𐤅 𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤓𐤁𐤏𐤕 𐤓𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤎𐤁𐤅 𐤁𐤋𐤊𐤕𐤌 𐤊𐤉 𐤄𐤌𐤒𐤅𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤄𐤓𐤀𐤔 𐤉𐤐𐤍𐤄 𐤉𐤋𐤊𐤅 𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤉𐤅 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤎𐤁𐤅 𐤁𐤋𐤊𐤕𐤌

בְּלֶכְתָּ֗ם יֵלֵ֔כוּ אֶל־ אַרְבַּ֤עַת רִבְעֵיהֶם֙ לֹ֥א יִסַּ֖בּוּ בְּלֶכְתָּ֑ם כִּ֣י הַמָּק֞וֹם אֲשֶׁר־ הָרֹאשׁ֙ יִפְנֶ֤ה יֵלֵ֔כוּ אַחֲרָ֣יו לֹ֥א יִסַּ֖בּוּ בְּלֶכְתָּֽם׃ bə·leḵ·tām yê·lê·ḵū ’el- ’ar·ba·‘aṯ riḇ·‘ê·hem lō yis·sab·bū bə·leḵ·tām kî ham·mā·qō·wm ’ă·šer- hā·rōš yip̄·neh yê·lê·ḵū ’a·ḥă·rāw lō yis·sab·bū bə·leḵ·tāmWLC · 11

Their entire bodies, including their backs, hands, and wings, were full of eyes all around, as were their four wheels.

𐤅𐤊𐤋 𐤁𐤔𐤓𐤌 𐤅𐤂𐤁𐤄𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤃𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤅𐤊𐤍𐤐𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤀𐤅𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤎𐤁𐤉𐤁 𐤋𐤀𐤓𐤁𐤏𐤕𐤌 𐤀𐤅𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤄𐤌

וְכָל־ בְּשָׂרָם֙ וְגַבֵּהֶ֔ם וִֽידֵיהֶ֖ם וְכַנְפֵיהֶ֑ם וְהָאֽוֹפַנִּ֗ים מְלֵאִ֤ים עֵינַ֙יִם֙ סָבִ֔יב לְאַרְבַּעְתָּ֖ם אוֹפַנֵּיהֶֽם׃ wə·ḵāl bə·śā·rām wə·ḡab·bê·hem wî·ḏê·hem wə·ḵan·p̄ê·hem wə·hā·’ō·w·p̄an·nîm mə·lê·’îm ‘ê·na·yim sā·ḇîḇ lə·’ar·ba‘·tām ’ō·w·p̄an·nê·hemWLC · 12

I heard the wheels being called “the whirling wheels.”

𐤁𐤀𐤆𐤍𐤉 𐤋𐤀𐤅𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤄𐤌 𐤒𐤅𐤓𐤀 𐤄𐤂𐤋𐤂𐤋

בְּאָזְנָֽי׃ לָא֖וֹפַנִּ֑ים לָהֶ֛ם קוֹרָ֥א הַגַּלְגַּ֖ל bə·’ā·zə·nāy lā·’ō·w·p̄an·nîm lā·hem qō·w·rā hag·gal·galWLC · 13

Each [of the cherubim] had four faces: the first face was that of a cherub, the second that of a man, the third that of a lion, and the fourth… that of an eagle.

𐤋𐤀𐤇𐤃 𐤅𐤀𐤓𐤁𐤏𐤄 𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤀𐤇𐤃 𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤄𐤊𐤓𐤅𐤁 𐤄𐤔𐤍𐤉 𐤅𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤔𐤋𐤉𐤔𐤉 𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤓𐤉𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤓𐤁𐤉𐤏𐤉 𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤍𐤔𐤓

לְאֶחָ֑ד וְאַרְבָּעָ֥ה פָנִ֖ים הָאֶחָ֜ד פְּנֵ֨י פְּנֵ֣י הַכְּר֗וּב הַשֵּׁנִי֙ וּפְנֵ֤י אָדָ֔ם וְהַשְּׁלִישִׁי֙ פְּנֵ֣י אַרְיֵ֔ה וְהָרְבִיעִ֖י פְּנֵי־ פְּנֵ֣י נָֽשֶׁר׃ lə·’e·ḥāḏ wə·’ar·bā·‘āh p̄ā·nîm hā·’e·ḥāḏ pə·nê pə·nê hak·kə·rūḇ haš·šê·nî ū·p̄ə·nê ’ā·ḏām wə·haš·šə·lî·šî pə·nê ’ar·yêh wə·hā·rə·ḇî·‘î pə·nê- pə·nê nā·šerWLC · 14

Then the cherubim rose upward. These were the living creatures I had seen by the River Kebar.

𐤄𐤊𐤓𐤅𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤌𐤅 𐤄𐤉𐤀 𐤄𐤇𐤉𐤄 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤓𐤀𐤉𐤕𐤉 𐤁𐤍𐤄𐤓 𐤊𐤁𐤓

הַכְּרוּבִ֑ים וַיֵּרֹ֖מּוּ הִ֣יא הַחַיָּ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר רָאִ֖יתִי בִּֽנְהַר־ כְּבָֽר׃ hak·kə·rū·ḇîm way·yê·rōm·mū hî ha·ḥay·yāh ’ă·šer rā·’î·ṯî bin·har- kə·ḇārWLC · 15

When the cherubim moved, the wheels moved beside them, [and even when they] spread their wings to rise from the ground, the wheels did not veer away from their side.

𐤄𐤊𐤓𐤅𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤁𐤋𐤊𐤕 𐤄𐤀𐤅𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤋𐤊𐤅 𐤀𐤑𐤋𐤌 𐤄𐤊𐤓𐤅𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤁𐤔𐤀𐤕 𐤊𐤍𐤐𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤋𐤓𐤅𐤌 𐤌𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤂𐤌 𐤄𐤌 𐤄𐤀𐤅𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤎𐤁𐤅 𐤌𐤀𐤑𐤋𐤌

הַכְּרוּבִ֔ים וּבְלֶ֙כֶת֙ הָאוֹפַנִּ֖ים יֵלְכ֥וּ אֶצְלָ֑ם הַכְּרוּבִ֜ים אֶת־ וּבִשְׂאֵ֨ת כַּנְפֵיהֶ֗ם לָרוּם֙ מֵעַ֣ל הָאָ֔רֶץ גַּם־ הֵ֖ם הָאוֹפַנִּ֛ים לֹא־ יִסַּ֧בּוּ מֵאֶצְלָֽם׃ hak·kə·rū·ḇîm ū·ḇə·le·ḵeṯ hā·’ō·w·p̄an·nîm yê·lə·ḵū ’eṣ·lām hak·kə·rū·ḇîm ’eṯ- ū·ḇiś·’êṯ kan·p̄ê·hem lā·rūm mê·‘al hā·’ā·reṣ gam- hêm hā·’ō·w·p̄an·nîm lō- yis·sab·bū mê·’eṣ·lāmWLC · 16

When the cherubim stood still, the wheels also stood still, and when they ascended, the wheels ascended with them, for the spirit of the living creatures was in [the wheels].

𐤁𐤏𐤌𐤃𐤌 𐤉𐤏𐤌𐤃𐤅 𐤅𐤁𐤓𐤅𐤌𐤌 𐤉𐤓𐤅𐤌𐤅 𐤀𐤅𐤕𐤌 𐤊𐤉 𐤓𐤅𐤇 𐤄𐤇𐤉𐤄 𐤁𐤄𐤌

Then the glory of the LORD moved away from the threshold of the temple and stood above the cherubim.

כְּב֣וֹד יְהוָ֔ה וַיֵּצֵא֙ מֵעַ֖ל מִפְתַּ֣ן הַבָּ֑יִת וַֽיַּעֲמֹ֖ד עַל־ הַכְּרוּבִֽים׃ kə·ḇō·wḏ Yah·weh way·yê·ṣê mê·‘al mip̄·tan hab·bā·yiṯ way·ya·‘ă·mōḏ ‘al- hak·kə·rū·ḇîmWLC · 18

As I watched, the cherubim lifted their wings and rose up from the ground, with the wheels beside them as they went. And they stopped at the entrance of the east gate of the house of the LORD, with the glory of the God of Israel above them.

לְעֵינַי֙ הַכְּרוּבִ֣ים אֶת־ וַיִּשְׂא֣וּ כַּ֠נְפֵיהֶם וַיֵּר֨וֹמּוּ מִן־ הָאָ֤רֶץ וְהָאֽוֹפַנִּ֖ים לְעֻמָּתָ֑ם בְּצֵאתָ֔ם וַֽיַּעֲמֹ֗ד פֶּ֣תַח הַקַּדְמוֹנִ֔י שַׁ֤עַר בֵּית־ יְהוָה֙ וּכְב֧וֹד אֱלֹהֵֽי־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל עֲלֵיהֶ֖ם מִלְמָֽעְלָה׃ lə·‘ê·nay hak·kə·rū·ḇîm ’eṯ- way·yiś·’ū kan·p̄ê·hem way·yê·rō·wm·mū min- hā·’ā·reṣ wə·hā·’ō·w·p̄an·nîm lə·‘um·mā·ṯām bə·ṣê·ṯām way·ya·‘ă·mōḏ pe·ṯaḥ haq·qaḏ·mō·w·nî ša·‘ar bêṯ- Yah·weh ū·ḵə·ḇō·wḏ ’ĕ·lō·hê- yiś·rā·’êl ‘ă·lê·hem mil·mā·‘ə·lāhWLC · 19

These were the living creatures I had seen beneath the God of Israel by the River Kebar, and I knew that they were cherubim.

הִ֣יא הַחַיָּ֗ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר רָאִ֛יתִי תַּ֥חַת אֱלֹהֵֽי־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל בִּֽנְהַר־ כְּבָ֑ר וָאֵדַ֕ע כִּ֥י הֵֽמָּה׃ כְרוּבִ֖ים hî ha·ḥay·yāh ’ă·šer rā·’î·ṯî ta·ḥaṯ ’ĕ·lō·hê- yiś·rā·’êl bin·har- kə·ḇār wā·’ê·ḏa‘ kî hêm·māh ḵə·rū·ḇîmWLC · 20

Each… had four faces and four wings, with what looked like human hands under their wings.

לְאֶחָ֔ד וְאַרְבַּ֥ע אַרְבָּעָ֨ה פָנִים֙ לְאֶחָ֑ד אַרְבָּעָ֤ה כְּנָפַ֖יִם וּדְמוּת֙ אָדָ֔ם יְדֵ֣י תַּ֖חַת כַּנְפֵיהֶֽם׃ lə·’e·ḥāḏ wə·’ar·ba‘ ’ar·bā·‘āh p̄ā·nîm lə·’e·ḥāḏ ’ar·bā·‘āh kə·nā·p̄a·yim ū·ḏə·mūṯ ’ā·ḏām yə·ḏê ta·ḥaṯ kan·p̄ê·hemWLC · 21

Their faces… looked like the faces I had seen by the River Kebar… -. Each [creature] went straight ahead…

פְּנֵיהֶ֔ם הֵ֣מָּה וּדְמ֣וּת הַפָּנִ֗ים אֲשֶׁ֤ר רָאִ֙יתִי֙ עַל־ נְהַר־ כְּבָ֔ר מַרְאֵיהֶ֖ם וְאוֹתָ֑ם אִ֛ישׁ יֵלֵֽכוּ׃ אֶל־ עֵ֥בֶר פָּנָ֖יו pə·nê·hem hêm·māh ū·ḏə·mūṯ hap·pā·nîm ’ă·šer rā·’î·ṯî ‘al- nə·har- kə·ḇār mar·’ê·hem wə·’ō·w·ṯām ’îš yê·lê·ḵū ’el- ‘ê·ḇer pā·nāwWLC · 22
