Reproof of False Prophets
1
Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying,

דְבַר־ יְהוָ֖ה וַיְהִ֥י אֵלַ֥י לֵאמֹֽר׃ ḏə·ḇar- Yah·weh way·hî ’ê·lay lê·mōr — WLC · 1

“Son of man, prophesy against the prophets of Israel who are now prophesying. Tell those who prophesy out of their own imagination: Hear the word of the LORD!
𐤁𐤍 𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤄𐤍𐤁𐤀 𐤀𐤋 𐤍𐤁𐤉𐤀𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤍𐤁𐤀𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤕 𐤋𐤍𐤁𐤉𐤀𐤉 𐤌𐤋𐤁𐤌 𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤅 𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄
בֶּן־ אָדָ֕ם הִנָּבֵ֛א אֶל־ נְבִיאֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל הַנִּבָּאִ֑ים וְאָֽמַרְתָּ֙ לִנְבִיאֵ֣י מִלִּבָּ֔ם שִׁמְע֖וּ דְּבַר־ יְהוָֽה׃ ben- ’ā·ḏām hin·nā·ḇê ’el- nə·ḇî·’ê yiś·rā·’êl han·nib·bā·’îm wə·’ā·mar·tā lin·ḇî·’ê mil·lib·bām šim·‘ū də·ḇar- Yah·weh — WLC · 2

This is what the Lord GOD says: Woe to the foolish prophets who follow… their own spirit yet have seen nothing.
𐤊𐤄 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤄𐤅𐤉 𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤍𐤁𐤋𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤍𐤁𐤉𐤀𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤄𐤋𐤊𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤇𐤓 𐤓𐤅𐤇𐤌 𐤓𐤀𐤅 𐤅𐤋𐤁𐤋𐤕𐤉
כֹּ֤ה אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֔ה אָמַר֙ ה֖וֹי עַל־ הַנְּבָלִ֑ים הַנְּבִיאִ֣ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר הֹלְכִ֛ים אַחַ֥ר רוּחָ֖ם רָאֽוּ׃ וּלְבִלְתִּ֥י kōh ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh ’ā·mar hō·w ‘al- han·nə·ḇā·lîm han·nə·ḇî·’îm ’ă·šer hō·lə·ḵîm ’a·ḥar rū·ḥām rā·’ū ū·lə·ḇil·tî — WLC · 3

Your prophets, O Israel, are like foxes among the ruins.
𐤍𐤁𐤉𐤀𐤉𐤊 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤉𐤅 𐤊𐤔𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤇𐤓𐤁𐤅𐤕
נְבִיאֶ֥יךָ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל הָיֽוּ׃ כְּשֻׁעָלִ֖ים בָּחֳרָב֑וֹת nə·ḇî·’e·ḵā yiś·rā·’êl hā·yū kə·šu·‘ā·lîm bā·ḥo·rā·ḇō·wṯ — WLC · 4

You did not go up to the gaps or restore the wall around the house of Israel so that it would stand in the battle on the Day of the LORD.
𐤋𐤀 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤕𐤌 𐤁𐤐𐤓𐤑𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤕𐤂𐤃𐤓𐤅 𐤂𐤃𐤓 𐤏𐤋 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤋𐤏𐤌𐤃 𐤁𐤌𐤋𐤇𐤌𐤄 𐤁𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄
לֹ֤א עֲלִיתֶם֙ בַּפְּרָצ֔וֹת וַתִּגְדְּר֥וּ גָדֵ֖ר עַל־ בֵּ֣ית יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל לַעֲמֹ֥ד בַּמִּלְחָמָ֖ה בְּי֥וֹם יְהוָֽה׃ lō ‘ă·lî·ṯem bap·pə·rā·ṣō·wṯ wat·tiḡ·də·rū ḡā·ḏêr ‘al- bêṯ yiś·rā·’êl la·‘ă·mōḏ bam·mil·ḥā·māh bə·yō·wm Yah·weh — WLC · 5

They see false visions and speak lying divinations. They claim, ‘Thus declares the LORD,’ when the LORD did not send them; yet they wait for the fulfillment of their message.

חָ֤זוּ שָׁוְא֙ כָּזָ֔ב וְקֶ֣סֶם הָאֹֽמְרִים֙ נְאֻם־ יְהוָ֔ה וַֽיהוָ֖ה לֹ֣א שְׁלָחָ֑ם וְיִֽחֲל֖וּ לְקַיֵּ֥ם דָּבָֽר׃ ḥā·zū šāw kā·zāḇ wə·qe·sem hā·’ō·mə·rîm nə·’um- Yah·weh Yah·weh lō šə·lā·ḥām wə·yi·ḥă·lū lə·qay·yêm dā·ḇār — WLC · 6

Haven’t you seen a false vision and spoken a lying divination when you proclaim, ‘Thus declares the LORD,’ even though I have not spoken?

הֲל֤וֹא חֲזִיתֶ֔ם שָׁוְא֙ מַֽחֲזֵה־ וְאֹֽמְרִים֙ כָּזָ֖ב וּמִקְסַ֥ם אֲמַרְתֶּ֑ם נְאֻם־ יְהוָ֔ה וַאֲנִ֖י לֹ֥א דִבַּֽרְתִּי׃ס hă·lō·w ḥă·zî·ṯem šāw ma·ḥă·zêh- wə·’ō·mə·rîm kā·zāḇ ū·miq·sam ’ă·mar·tem nə·’um- Yah·weh wa·’ă·nî lō ḏib·bar·tî — WLC · 7

Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: Because you have uttered vain words and seen false visions,… I am against you, declares the Lord GOD.

לָכֵ֗ן כֹּ֤ה אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֔ה אָמַר֙ יַ֚עַן דַּבֶּרְכֶ֣ם שָׁ֔וְא וַחֲזִיתֶ֖ם כָּזָ֑ב לָכֵן֙ הִנְנִ֣י אֲלֵיכֶ֔ם נְאֻ֖ם אֲדֹנָ֥י יְהוִֽה׃ lā·ḵên kōh ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh ’ā·mar ya·‘an dab·ber·ḵem šāw wa·ḥă·zî·ṯem kā·zāḇ lā·ḵên hin·nî ’ă·lê·ḵem nə·’um ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh — WLC · 8

My hand will be against the prophets who see false visions and speak lying divinations. They will not belong to the council of My people or be recorded in the register of the house of Israel, nor will they enter… the land of Israel… Then you will know that I am the Lord GOD.

יָדִ֗י וְהָיְתָ֣ה אֶֽל־ הַנְּבִיאִ֞ים הַחֹזִ֣ים שָׁוְא֮ כָּזָב֒ וְהַקֹּסְמִ֣ים לֹֽא־ יִהְי֗וּ בְּס֧וֹד עַמִּ֣י יִכָּתֵ֔בוּ וּבִכְתָ֤ב בֵּֽית־ יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ לֹ֣א וְאֶל־ יָבֹ֑אוּ אַדְמַ֥ת יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל לֹ֣א וִידַעְתֶּ֕ם כִּ֥י אֲנִ֖י אֲדֹנָ֥י יְהוִֽה׃ yā·ḏî wə·hā·yə·ṯāh ’el- han·nə·ḇî·’îm ha·ḥō·zîm šāw kā·zāḇ wə·haq·qō·sə·mîm lō- yih·yū bə·sō·wḏ ‘am·mî yik·kā·ṯê·ḇū ū·ḇiḵ·ṯāḇ bêṯ- yiś·rā·’êl lō wə·’el- yā·ḇō·’ū ’aḏ·maṯ yiś·rā·’êl lō wî·ḏa‘·tem kî ’ă·nî ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh — WLC · 9

Because… they have led My people astray, saying, ‘Peace,’ when there is no peace,… and whitewashing - any flimsy wall that is built,
𐤉𐤏𐤍 𐤅𐤁𐤉𐤏𐤍 𐤏𐤌𐤉 𐤄𐤈𐤏𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤔𐤋𐤅𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤉𐤍 𐤔𐤋𐤅𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤌 𐤈𐤇𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤕𐤅 𐤕𐤐𐤋 𐤇𐤉𐤑 𐤅𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤁𐤍𐤄
יַ֣עַן וּבְיַ֜עַן עַמִּ֛י הִטְע֧וּ אֶת־ לֵאמֹ֥ר שָׁל֖וֹם וְאֵ֣ין שָׁל֑וֹם וְהִנָּ֛ם טָחִ֥ים אֹת֖וֹ תָּפֵֽל׃ חַ֔יִץ וְהוּא֙ בֹּ֣נֶה ya·‘an ū·ḇə·ya·‘an ‘am·mî hiṭ·‘ū ’eṯ- lê·mōr šā·lō·wm wə·’ên šā·lō·wm wə·hin·nām ṭā·ḥîm ’ō·ṯōw tā·p̄êl ḥa·yiṣ wə·hū bō·neh — WLC · 10

tell… those whitewashing [the wall]… that it will fall. Rain will come in torrents…, I will send hailstones… plunging down, and a windstorm… will burst forth.
𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤈𐤇𐤉 𐤕𐤐𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤐𐤋 𐤂𐤔𐤌 𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤔𐤅𐤈𐤐 𐤅𐤀𐤕𐤍𐤄 𐤀𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤋𐤂𐤁𐤉𐤔 𐤕𐤐𐤋𐤍𐤄 𐤅𐤓𐤅𐤇 𐤎𐤏𐤓𐤅𐤕 𐤕𐤁𐤒𐤏
אֱמֹ֛ר אֶל־ טָחֵ֥י תָפֵ֖ל וְיִפֹּ֑ל גֶּ֣שֶׁם הָיָ֣ה׀ שׁוֹטֵ֗ף וְאַתֵּ֜נָה אַבְנֵ֤י אֶלְגָּבִישׁ֙ תִּפֹּ֔לְנָה וְר֥וּחַ סְעָר֖וֹת תְּבַקֵּֽעַ׃ ’ĕ·mōr ’el- ṭā·ḥê ṯā·p̄êl wə·yip·pōl ge·šem hā·yāh šō·w·ṭêp̄ wə·’at·tê·nāh ’aḇ·nê ’el·gā·ḇîš tip·pō·lə·nāh wə·rū·aḥ sə·‘ā·rō·wṯ tə·ḇaq·qê·a‘ — WLC · 11

Surely when the wall has fallen, you will not be asked,… ‘Where is the whitewash with which you covered it?’

וְהִנֵּ֖ה הַקִּ֑יר נָפַ֣ל הֲלוֹא֙ יֵאָמֵ֣ר אֲלֵיכֶ֔ם אַיֵּ֥ה הַטִּ֖יחַ אֲשֶׁ֥ר טַחְתֶּֽם׃ס wə·hin·nêh haq·qîr nā·p̄al hă·lō·w yê·’ā·mêr ’ă·lê·ḵem ’ay·yêh haṭ·ṭî·aḥ ’ă·šer ṭaḥ·tem — WLC · 12

Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: In My wrath I will release a windstorm…, and in My anger torrents of rain and hail will fall… with destructive fury.

לָכֵ֗ן כֹּ֤ה אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֔ה אָמַר֙ בַּֽחֲמָתִ֑י וּבִקַּעְתִּ֥י רֽוּחַ־ סְעָר֖וֹת בְּאַפִּ֣י שֹׁטֵף֙ וְגֶ֤שֶׁם וְאַבְנֵ֥י יִֽהְיֶ֔ה אֶלְגָּבִ֖ישׁ לְכָלָֽה׃ בְּחֵמָ֥ה lā·ḵên kōh ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh ’ā·mar ba·ḥă·mā·ṯî ū·ḇiq·qa‘·tî rū·aḥ- sə·‘ā·rō·wṯ bə·’ap·pî šō·ṭêp̄ wə·ḡe·šem wə·’aḇ·nê yih·yeh ’el·gā·ḇîš lə·ḵā·lāh bə·ḥê·māh — WLC · 13

I will tear down the wall you whitewashed… and level it to the ground, so that its foundation is exposed. The city will fall, and you will be destroyed within it. Then you will know that I am the LORD.

וְהָ֨רַסְתִּ֜י אֶת־ הַקִּ֨יר אֲשֶׁר־ טַחְתֶּ֥ם תָּפֵ֛ל וְהִגַּעְתִּ֥יהוּ אֶל־ הָאָ֖רֶץ יְסֹד֑וֹ וְנִגְלָ֣ה וְנָֽפְלָה֙ וּכְלִיתֶ֣ם בְּתוֹכָ֔הּ וִֽידַעְתֶּ֖ם כִּֽי־ אֲנִ֥י יְהוָֽה׃ wə·hā·ras·tî ’eṯ- haq·qîr ’ă·šer- ṭaḥ·tem tā·p̄êl wə·hig·ga‘·tî·hū ’el- hā·’ā·reṣ yə·sō·ḏōw wə·niḡ·lāh wə·nā·p̄ə·lāh ū·ḵə·lî·ṯem bə·ṯō·w·ḵāh wî·ḏa‘·tem kî- ’ă·nî Yah·weh — WLC · 14

And after I have vented My wrath against the wall and against those who whitewashed it -, I will say to you: ‘The wall is gone, and [so] are those who whitewashed it—
𐤅𐤊𐤋𐤉𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤕 𐤇𐤌𐤕𐤉 𐤁𐤒𐤉𐤓 𐤅𐤁𐤈𐤇𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤕𐤅 𐤕𐤐𐤋 𐤅𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤋𐤊𐤌 𐤄𐤒𐤉𐤓 𐤀𐤉𐤍 𐤅𐤀𐤉𐤍 𐤄𐤈𐤇𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤕𐤅
וְכִלֵּיתִ֤י אֶת־ חֲמָתִי֙ בַּקִּ֔יר וּבַטָּחִ֥ים אֹת֖וֹ תָּפֵ֑ל וְאֹמַ֤ר לָכֶם֙ הַקִּ֔יר אֵ֣ין וְאֵ֖ין הַטָּחִ֥ים אֹתֽוֹ׃ wə·ḵil·lê·ṯî ’eṯ- ḥă·mā·ṯî baq·qîr ū·ḇaṭ·ṭā·ḥîm ’ō·ṯōw tā·p̄êl wə·’ō·mar lā·ḵem haq·qîr ’ên wə·’ên haṭ·ṭā·ḥîm ’ō·ṯōw — WLC · 15

those prophets of Israel who prophesied to Jerusalem and saw a vision of peace for her when there was no peace, declares the Lord GOD.’

נְבִיאֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל הַֽנִבְּאִים֙ אֶל־ יְר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔ם וְהַחֹזִ֥ים חֲז֣וֹן שָׁלֹ֑ם לָ֖הּ וְאֵ֣ין שָׁלֹ֔ם נְאֻ֖ם אֲדֹנָ֥י יְהֹוִֽה׃פ nə·ḇî·’ê yiś·rā·’êl ha·nib·bə·ʾīm ’el- yə·rū·šā·lim wə·ha·ḥō·zîm ḥă·zō·wn šā·lōm lāh wə·’ên šā·lōm nə·’um ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh — WLC · 16
Reproof of False Prophetesses

Now, O son of man, set your face against the daughters of your people who prophesy out of their own imagination. Prophesy against them
𐤅𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤁𐤍 𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤊 𐤀𐤋 𐤁𐤍𐤅𐤕 𐤏𐤌𐤊 𐤄𐤌𐤕𐤍𐤁𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤌𐤋𐤁𐤄𐤍 𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤁𐤀 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤍
וְאַתָּ֣ה בֶן־ אָדָ֗ם שִׂ֤ים פָּנֶ֙יךָ֙ אֶל־ בְּנ֣וֹת עַמְּךָ֔ הַמִּֽתְנַבְּא֖וֹת מִֽלִּבְּהֶ֑ן וְהִנָּבֵ֖א עֲלֵיהֶֽן׃ wə·’at·tāh ḇen- ’ā·ḏām śîm pā·ne·ḵā ’el- bə·nō·wṯ ‘am·mə·ḵā ham·miṯ·nab·bə·’ō·wṯ mil·lib·bə·hen wə·hin·nā·ḇê ‘ă·lê·hen — WLC · 17

and tell them that this is what the Lord GOD says: Woe to the women who sew magic charms on vvv their wrists… and make veils for the heads of people of every height, in order to ensnare their souls. Will you ensnare the souls of My people… but preserve your own…?

You have profaned Me among My people for handfuls of barley and scraps of bread. By lying to My people who would listen…, you have killed those who should not have died and spared those who should not have lived.

Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: See, I am against the magic charms with which you ensnare… souls like birds, and I will tear them from your arms. So I will free the souls you have ensnared - like birds.

I will also tear off your veils and deliver My people from your hands, so that they will no longer be prey in your hands. Then you will know that I am the LORD.

Because you have disheartened… the righteous with your lies, even though I vvv have caused them no grief, and because you have encouraged… the wicked not to turn from their evil ways to save their lives,

יַ֣עַן הַכְא֤וֹת לֵב־ צַדִּיק֙ שֶׁ֔קֶר וַאֲנִ֖י לֹ֣א הִכְאַבְתִּ֑יו וּלְחַזֵּק֙ יְדֵ֣י הָרָ֖ע לְבִלְתִּי־ שׁ֛וּב רָשָׁ֔ע מִדַּרְכּ֥וֹ לְהַחֲיֹתֽוֹ׃ ya·‘an haḵ·’ō·wṯ lêḇ- ṣad·dîq še·qer wa·’ă·nî lō hiḵ·’aḇ·tîw ū·lə·ḥaz·zêq yə·ḏê hā·rā‘ lə·ḇil·tî- šūḇ rā·šā‘ mid·dar·kōw lə·ha·ḥă·yō·ṯōw — WLC · 22
