Chapter 14
Idolatrous Elders Condemned

Then some of the elders of Israel came - and sat down before me.
𐤌𐤆𐤒𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤅𐤀 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤀𐤍𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤁𐤅 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤐
מִזִּקְנֵ֖י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וַיָּב֤וֹא אֵלַי֙ אֲנָשִׁ֔ים וַיֵּשְׁב֖וּ לְפָנָֽי׃פ miz·ziq·nê yiś·rā·’êl way·yā·ḇō·w ’ê·lay ’ă·nā·šîm way·yê·šə·ḇū lə·p̄ā·nāy — WLC · 1

And the word of the LORD came to me, saying,

דְבַר־ יְהוָ֖ה וַיְהִ֥י אֵלַ֥י לֵאמֹֽר׃ ḏə·ḇar- Yah·weh way·hî ’ê·lay lê·mōr — WLC · 2

“Son of man, these men have set up idols in their hearts and put wicked stumbling blocks before their faces. Should I consult with them in any way?
𐤁𐤍 𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤄𐤀𐤋𐤄 𐤄𐤀𐤍𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤏𐤋𐤅 𐤂𐤋𐤅𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤏𐤋 𐤋𐤁𐤌 𐤍𐤕𐤍𐤅 𐤏𐤅𐤍𐤌 𐤅𐤌𐤊𐤔𐤅𐤋 𐤍𐤊𐤇 𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤄𐤀𐤃𐤓𐤔 𐤋𐤄𐤌𐤎 𐤀𐤃𐤓𐤔
בֶּן־ אָדָ֗ם הָאֵ֙לֶּה֙ הָאֲנָשִׁ֤ים הֶעֱל֤וּ גִלּֽוּלֵיהֶם֙ עַל־ לִבָּ֔ם נָתְנ֖וּ עֲוֺנָ֔ם וּמִכְשׁ֣וֹל נֹ֣כַח פְּנֵיהֶ֑ם הַאִדָּרֹ֥שׁ לָהֶֽם׃ס אִדָּרֵ֖שׁ ben- ’ā·ḏām hā·’êl·leh hā·’ă·nā·šîm he·‘ĕ·lū ḡil·lū·lê·hem ‘al- lib·bām nā·ṯə·nū ‘ă·wō·nām ū·miḵ·šō·wl nō·ḵaḥ pə·nê·hem ha·’id·dā·rōš lā·hem ’id·dā·rêš — WLC · 3

Therefore speak to them and tell them that this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘When any… vvv Israelite sets up idols in his heart and puts a wicked stumbling block before his face, and then comes to the prophet, I the LORD will answer him according to his great idolatry,
𐤋𐤊𐤍 𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤀𐤅𐤕𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤕 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤊𐤄 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤌𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤏𐤋𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤂𐤋𐤅𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤀𐤋 𐤋𐤁𐤅 𐤉𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤅𐤍𐤅 𐤅𐤌𐤊𐤔𐤅𐤋 𐤍𐤊𐤇 𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤁𐤀 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤍𐤁𐤉𐤀 𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤍𐤏𐤍𐤉𐤕𐤉 𐤋𐤅 𐤁𐤄 𐤁𐤓𐤁 𐤂𐤋𐤅𐤋𐤉𐤅
לָכֵ֣ן דַּבֵּר־ א֠וֹתָם וְאָמַרְתָּ֨ אֲלֵיהֶ֜ם כֹּה־ אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֗ה אָמַ֣ר׀ אֲשֶׁר֩ אִ֣ישׁ אִ֣ישׁ מִבֵּ֣ית יִשְׂרָאֵ֡ל יַעֲלֶ֨ה אֶת־ גִּלּוּלָ֜יו אֶל־ לִבּ֗וֹ יָשִׂים֙ עֲוֺנוֹ֙ וּמִכְשׁ֤וֹל נֹ֣כַח פָּנָ֔יו וּבָ֖א אֶל־ הַנָּבִ֑יא אֲנִ֣י יְהוָ֗ה נַעֲנֵ֧יתִי ל֦וֹ בָהּ בְּרֹ֥ב גִּלּוּלָֽיו׃ lā·ḵên dab·bêr- ’ō·w·ṯām wə·’ā·mar·tā ’ă·lê·hem kōh- ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh ’ā·mar ’ă·šer ’îš ’îš mib·bêṯ yiś·rā·’êl ya·‘ă·leh ’eṯ- gil·lū·lāw ’el- lib·bōw yā·śîm ‘ă·wō·nōw ū·miḵ·šō·wl nō·ḵaḥ pā·nāw ū·ḇā ’el- han·nā·ḇî ’ă·nî Yah·weh na·‘ă·nê·ṯî lōw ḇå̄h bə·rōḇ gil·lū·lāw — WLC · 4

so that I may take hold of the hearts of the [people] of Israel. For because of their idols, they are all estranged from Me.’
𐤋𐤌𐤏𐤍 𐤕𐤐𐤔 𐤀𐤕 𐤁𐤋𐤁𐤌 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤁𐤂𐤋𐤅𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤊𐤋𐤌𐤎 𐤍𐤆𐤓𐤅 𐤌𐤏𐤋𐤉
לְמַ֛עַן תְּפֹ֥שׂ אֶת־ בְּלִבָּ֑ם בֵּֽית־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל אֲשֶׁ֤ר בְּגִלּֽוּלֵיהֶ֖ם כֻּלָּֽם׃ס נָזֹ֙רוּ֙ מֵֽעָלַ֔י lə·ma·‘an tə·p̄ōś ’eṯ- bə·lib·bām bêṯ- yiś·rā·’êl ’ă·šer bə·ḡil·lū·lê·hem kul·lām nā·zō·rū mê·‘ā·lay — WLC · 5

Therefore tell… the house of Israel that this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Repent and turn away from your idols; turn your faces away from all your abominations.

לָכֵ֞ן אֱמֹ֣ר׀ אֶל־ בֵּ֣ית יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל כֹּ֤ה אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֔ה אָמַר֙ שׁ֣וּבוּ וְהָשִׁ֔יבוּ מֵעַ֖ל גִּלּֽוּלֵיכֶ֑ם פְנֵיכֶֽם׃ הָשִׁ֥יבוּ וּמֵעַ֥ל כָּל־ תּוֹעֲבֹתֵיכֶ֖ם lā·ḵên ’ĕ·mōr ’el- bêṯ yiś·rā·’êl kōh ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh ’ā·mar šū·ḇū wə·hā·šî·ḇū mê·‘al gil·lū·lê·ḵem p̄ə·nê·ḵem hā·šî·ḇū ū·mê·‘al kāl- tō·w·‘ă·ḇō·ṯê·ḵem — WLC · 6

For when any… vvv Israelite or any foreigner dwelling in Israel separates himself from Me, sets up idols in his heart, and puts a wicked stumbling block before his face, and then comes to the prophet to inquire of Me, I the LORD will answer him Myself.
𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤌𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤌𐤄𐤂𐤓 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤉𐤂𐤅𐤓 𐤁𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤍𐤆𐤓 𐤌𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤉 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤋 𐤂𐤋𐤅𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤀𐤋 𐤋𐤁𐤅 𐤉𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤅𐤍𐤅 𐤅𐤌𐤊𐤔𐤅𐤋 𐤍𐤊𐤇 𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤁𐤀 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤍𐤁𐤉𐤀 𐤋𐤃𐤓𐤔 𐤋𐤅 𐤁𐤉 𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤍𐤏𐤍𐤄 𐤋𐤅 𐤁𐤉
כִּי֩ אִ֨ישׁ אִ֜ישׁ מִבֵּ֣ית יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל וּמֵהַגֵּר֮ אֲשֶׁר־ יָג֣וּר בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל֒ וְיִנָּזֵ֣ר מֵֽאַחֲרַ֗י וְיַ֤עַל גִּלּוּלָיו֙ אֶל־ לִבּ֔וֹ יָשִׂ֖ים עֲוֺנ֔וֹ וּמִכְשׁ֣וֹל נֹ֣כַח פָּנָ֑יו וּבָ֤א אֶל־ הַנָּבִיא֙ לִדְרָשׁ־ ל֣וֹ בִ֔י אֲנִ֣י יְהוָ֔ה נַֽעֲנֶה־ לּ֖וֹ בִּֽי׃ kî ’îš ’îš mib·bêṯ yiś·rā·’êl ū·mê·hag·gêr ’ă·šer- yā·ḡūr bə·yiś·rā·’êl wə·yin·nā·zêr mê·’a·ḥă·ray wə·ya·‘al gil·lū·lāw ’el- lib·bōw yā·śîm ‘ă·wō·nōw ū·miḵ·šō·wl nō·ḵaḥ pā·nāw ū·ḇā ’el- han·nā·ḇî liḏ·rāš- lōw ḇî ’ă·nî Yah·weh na·‘ă·neh- lōw bî — WLC · 7

I will set My face against that man and make him a sign and a proverb; I will cut him off from among My people. Then you will know that I am the LORD.
𐤅𐤍𐤕𐤕𐤉 𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤄𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤁𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤅𐤄𐤔𐤌𐤕𐤉𐤄𐤅 𐤋𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤋𐤌𐤔𐤋𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤊𐤓𐤕𐤉𐤅 𐤌𐤕𐤅𐤊 𐤏𐤌𐤉 𐤅𐤉𐤃𐤏𐤕𐤌 𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄𐤎
וְנָתַתִּ֨י פָנַ֜י הַה֗וּא בָּאִ֣ישׁ וַהֲשִֽׂמֹתִ֙יהוּ֙ לְא֣וֹת וְלִמְשָׁלִ֔ים וְהִכְרַתִּ֖יו מִתּ֣וֹךְ עַמִּ֑י וִֽידַעְתֶּ֖ם כִּֽי־ אֲנִ֥י יְהוָֽה׃ס wə·nā·ṯat·tî p̄ā·nay ha·hū bā·’îš wa·hă·śi·mō·ṯî·hū lə·’ō·wṯ wə·lim·šā·lîm wə·hiḵ·rat·tîw mit·tō·wḵ ‘am·mî wî·ḏa‘·tem kî- ’ă·nî Yah·weh — WLC · 8

But if the prophet is enticed to speak a message, then it was I the LORD who enticed him…, and I will stretch out My hand against him and destroy him from among My people Israel.
𐤊𐤉 𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤁𐤉𐤀 𐤉𐤐𐤕𐤄 𐤅𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤐𐤕𐤉𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤄𐤍𐤁𐤉𐤀 𐤅𐤍𐤈𐤉𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤃𐤉 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤄𐤔𐤌𐤃𐤕𐤉𐤅 𐤌𐤕𐤅𐤊 𐤏𐤌𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋
כִֽי־ וְהַנָּבִ֤יא יְפֻתֶּה֙ וְדִבֶּ֣ר דָּבָ֔ר אֲנִ֤י יְהוָה֙ פִּתֵּ֔יתִי אֵ֖ת הַה֑וּא הַנָּבִ֣יא וְנָטִ֤יתִי אֶת־ יָדִי֙ עָלָ֔יו וְהִ֨שְׁמַדְתִּ֔יו מִתּ֖וֹךְ עַמִּ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ ḵî- wə·han·nā·ḇî yə·p̄ut·teh wə·ḏib·ber dā·ḇār ’ă·nî Yah·weh pit·tê·ṯî ’êṯ ha·hū han·nā·ḇî wə·nā·ṭî·ṯî ’eṯ- yā·ḏî ‘ā·lāw wə·hiš·maḏ·tîw mit·tō·wḵ ‘am·mî yiś·rā·’êl — WLC · 9

They will bear their punishment— the punishment of the inquirer will be the same as that of the prophet—
𐤅𐤍𐤔𐤀𐤅 𐤏𐤅𐤍𐤌 𐤊𐤏𐤅𐤍 𐤄𐤃𐤓𐤔 𐤉𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤊𐤏𐤅𐤍 𐤄𐤍𐤁𐤉𐤀
וְנָשְׂא֖וּ עֲוֺנָ֑ם כַּֽעֲוֺן֙ הַדֹּרֵ֔שׁ יִֽהְיֶֽה׃ כַּעֲוֺ֥ן הַנָּבִ֖יא wə·nā·śə·’ū ‘ă·wō·nām ka·‘ă·wōn had·dō·rêš yih·yeh ka·‘ă·wōn han·nā·ḇî — WLC · 10

in order that the house of Israel may no longer stray from Me and no longer defile themselves with all their transgressions. Then they will be My people and I will be their God, declares the Lord GOD.’”

לְ֠מַעַן בֵּֽית־ יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ לֹֽא־ ע֤וֹד יִתְע֨וּ מֵאַֽחֲרַ֔י וְלֹֽא־ ע֖וֹד יִטַּמְּא֥וּ בְּכָל־ פִּשְׁעֵיהֶ֑ם וְהָ֥יוּ לִ֣י לְעָ֗ם וַֽאֲנִי֙ אֶהְיֶ֤ה לָהֶם֙ לֵֽאלֹהִ֔ים נְאֻ֖ם אֲדֹנָ֥י יְהוִֽה׃פ lə·ma·‘an bêṯ- yiś·rā·’êl lō- ‘ō·wḏ yiṯ·‘ū mê·’a·ḥă·ray wə·lō- ‘ō·wḏ yiṭ·ṭam·mə·’ū bə·ḵāl piš·‘ê·hem wə·hā·yū lî lə·‘ām wa·’ă·nî ’eh·yeh lā·hem lê·lō·hîm nə·’um ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh — WLC · 11
Four Dire Judgments

And the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓
דְבַר־ יְהוָ֖ה וַיְהִ֥י אֵלַ֥י לֵאמֹֽר׃ ḏə·ḇar- Yah·weh way·hî ’ê·lay lê·mōr — WLC · 12

“Son of man, if a land sins against Me by acting unfaithfully…, and I stretch out My hand against it to cut off its supply of food, to send famine upon it, and to cut off from it both man and beast,
𐤁𐤍 𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤕𐤇𐤈𐤀 𐤋𐤉 𐤋𐤌𐤏𐤋 𐤌𐤏𐤋 𐤅𐤍𐤈𐤉𐤕𐤉 𐤉𐤃𐤉 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤄 𐤅𐤔𐤁𐤓𐤕𐤉 𐤋𐤄 𐤌𐤈𐤄 𐤋𐤇𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤔𐤋𐤇𐤕𐤉 𐤓𐤏𐤁 𐤁𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤊𐤓𐤕𐤉 𐤌𐤌𐤍𐤄 𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤅𐤁𐤄𐤌𐤄
בֶּן־ אָדָ֗ם כִּ֤י אֶ֚רֶץ תֶחֱטָא־ לִי֙ לִמְעָל־ מַ֔עַל וְנָטִ֤יתִי יָדִי֙ עָלֶ֔יהָ וְשָׁבַ֥רְתִּי לָ֖הּ מַטֵּה־ לָ֑חֶם וְהִשְׁלַחְתִּי־ רָעָ֔ב בָ֣הּ וְהִכְרַתִּ֥י מִמֶּ֖נָּה אָדָ֥ם וּבְהֵמָֽה׃ ben- ’ā·ḏām kî ’e·reṣ ṯe·ḥĕ·ṭā- lî lim·‘āl- ma·‘al wə·nā·ṭî·ṯî yā·ḏî ‘ā·le·hā wə·šā·ḇar·tî lāh maṭ·ṭêh- lā·ḥem wə·hiš·laḥ·tî- rā·‘āḇ ḇāh wə·hiḵ·rat·tî mim·men·nāh ’ā·ḏām ū·ḇə·hê·māh — WLC · 13

then even if these three men— Noah, Daniel, and Job— were in it, vvv their righteousness could deliver only themselves, declares the Lord GOD.
𐤄𐤀𐤋𐤄 𐤔𐤋𐤔𐤕 𐤄𐤀𐤍𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤍𐤇 𐤃𐤍𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤀𐤉𐤅𐤁 𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤅 𐤁𐤕𐤅𐤊𐤄 𐤄𐤌𐤄 𐤁𐤑𐤃𐤒𐤕𐤌 𐤉𐤍𐤑𐤋𐤅 𐤍𐤐𐤔𐤌 𐤍𐤀𐤌 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄
הָאֵ֙לֶּה֙ שְׁלֹ֨שֶׁת הָאֲנָשִׁ֤ים נֹ֖חַ דָּנִאֵל וְאִיּ֑וֹב וְ֠הָיוּ בְּתוֹכָ֔הּ הֵ֤מָּה בְצִדְקָתָם֙ יְנַצְּל֣וּ נַפְשָׁ֔ם נְאֻ֖ם אֲדֹנָ֥י יְהוִֽה׃ hā·’êl·leh šə·lō·šeṯ hā·’ă·nā·šîm nō·aḥ då̄·ni·ʾēl wə·’î·yō·wḇ wə·hā·yū bə·ṯō·w·ḵāh hêm·māh ḇə·ṣiḏ·qā·ṯām yə·naṣ·ṣə·lū nap̄·šām nə·’um ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh — WLC · 14

Or if I send wild… beasts through the land to leave it childless [and] desolate, with no man passing through it for fear of the beasts,
𐤋𐤅 𐤓𐤏𐤄 𐤀𐤏𐤁𐤉𐤓 𐤇𐤉𐤄 𐤁𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤅𐤔𐤊𐤋𐤕𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤕𐤄 𐤔𐤌𐤌𐤄 𐤌𐤁𐤋𐤉 𐤏𐤅𐤁𐤓 𐤌𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤄𐤇𐤉𐤄
לֽוּ־ רָעָ֛ה אַעֲבִ֥יר חַיָּ֥ה בָּאָ֖רֶץ וְשִׁכְּלָ֑תָּה וְהָיְתָ֤ה שְׁמָמָה֙ מִבְּלִ֣י עוֹבֵ֔ר מִפְּנֵ֖י הַחַיָּֽה׃ lū- rā·‘āh ’a·‘ă·ḇîr ḥay·yāh bā·’ā·reṣ wə·šik·kə·lāt·tāh wə·hā·yə·ṯāh šə·mā·māh mib·bə·lî ‘ō·w·ḇêr mip·pə·nê ha·ḥay·yāh — WLC · 15

then as surely as I live, declares the Lord GOD, even if these three men were in it, they could not deliver their own sons or daughters. They alone would be delivered, but the land would be desolate.

Or if I bring a sword against that land and say, ‘Let a sword pass through it,’ so that I cut off from it both man and beast,

א֛וֹ אָבִ֖יא חֶ֥רֶב עַל־ הַהִ֑יא הָאָ֣רֶץ וְאָמַרְתִּ֗י חֶ֚רֶב תַּעֲבֹ֣ר בָּאָ֔רֶץ וְהִכְרַתִּ֥י מִמֶּ֖נָּה אָדָ֥ם וּבְהֵמָֽה׃ ’ōw ’ā·ḇî ḥe·reḇ ‘al- ha·hî hā·’ā·reṣ wə·’ā·mar·tî ḥe·reḇ ta·‘ă·ḇōr bā·’ā·reṣ wə·hiḵ·rat·tî mim·men·nāh ’ā·ḏām ū·ḇə·hê·māh — WLC · 17

then as surely as I live, declares the Lord GOD, even if these three men were in it, they could not deliver their own sons or daughters. They alone would be delivered.

Or if I send a plague into that land and pour out My wrath upon it through bloodshed, cutting off from it both man and beast,

For this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘How much worse will it be when I send against Jerusalem My four dire judgments— sword, famine, wild beasts, and plague— in order to cut off from it both man and beast?

Yet, behold, some survivors will be left in it— sons and daughters… who will be brought out. They will come out to you, and when you see their conduct and actions, you will be comforted regarding the disaster I have brought upon Jerusalem— all that I have brought upon it.

They will bring you consolation when you see their conduct and actions, and you will know that it was not without cause that I have done all [these things] within it,’ declares the Lord GOD.”
