Chapter 17
The Parable of Two Eagles and a Vine
1
Now the word of the LORD came to me, saying,

דְבַר־ יְהוָ֖ה וַיְהִ֥י אֵלַ֥י לֵאמֹֽר׃ ḏə·ḇar- Yah·weh way·hî ’ê·lay lê·mōr — WLC · 1

“Son of man, pose a riddle; speak a parable… to the house of Israel
𐤁𐤍 𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤇𐤅𐤃 𐤇𐤉𐤃𐤄 𐤅𐤌𐤔𐤋 𐤌𐤔𐤋 𐤀𐤋 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋
בֶּן־ אָדָ֕ם ח֥וּד חִידָ֖ה וּמְשֹׁ֣ל מָשָׁ֑ל אֶל־ בֵּ֖ית יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ ben- ’ā·ḏām ḥūḏ ḥî·ḏāh ū·mə·šōl mā·šāl ’el- bêṯ yiś·rā·’êl — WLC · 2

and tell them that this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘A great eagle with great wings and long pinions, full of feathers of many colors, came to Lebanon and took away the top of the cedar.

וְאָמַרְתָּ֞ כֹּה־ אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֗ה אָמַ֣ר׀ הַגָּדוֹל֙ הַנֶּ֤שֶׁר גְּד֤וֹל הַכְּנָפַ֙יִם֙ אֶ֣רֶךְ הָאֵ֔בֶר מָלֵא֙ הַנּוֹצָ֔ה אֲשֶׁר־ ל֖וֹ הָֽרִקְמָ֑ה בָּ֚א אֶל־ הַלְּבָנ֔וֹן וַיִּקַּ֖ח אֶת־ צַמֶּ֥רֶת הָאָֽרֶז׃ wə·’ā·mar·tā kōh- ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh ’ā·mar hag·gā·ḏō·wl han·ne·šer gə·ḏō·wl hak·kə·nā·p̄a·yim ’e·reḵ hā·’ê·ḇer mā·lê han·nō·w·ṣāh ’ă·šer- lōw hā·riq·māh bā ’el- hal·lə·ḇā·nō·wn way·yiq·qaḥ ’eṯ- ṣam·me·reṯ hā·’ā·rez — WLC · 3

- He plucked off its topmost shoot, carried it to the land of merchants, and planted it in a city of traders.

אֵ֛ת קָטָ֑ף רֹ֥אשׁ יְנִֽיקוֹתָ֖יו וַיְבִיאֵ֙הוּ֙ אֶל־ אֶ֣רֶץ כְּנַ֔עַן שָׂמֽוֹ׃ בְּעִ֥יר רֹכְלִ֖ים ’êṯ qā·ṭāp̄ rōš yə·nî·qō·w·ṯāw way·ḇî·’ê·hū ’el- ’e·reṣ kə·na·‘an śā·mōw bə·‘îr rō·ḵə·lîm — WLC · 4

He took some of the seed of the land and planted it in fertile soil; he placed [it] by abundant waters [and] set it out like a willow.

וַיִּקַּח֙ מִזֶּ֣רַע הָאָ֔רֶץ וַֽיִּתְּנֵ֖הוּ זָ֑רַע בִּשְׂדֵה־ קָ֚ח עַל־ רַבִּ֔ים מַ֣יִם שָׂמֽוֹ׃ צַפְצָפָ֖ה way·yiq·qaḥ miz·ze·ra‘ hā·’ā·reṣ way·yit·tə·nê·hū zā·ra‘ biś·ḏêh- qāḥ ‘al- rab·bîm ma·yim śā·mōw ṣap̄·ṣā·p̄āh — WLC · 5

It sprouted and became a spreading vine, low in height, with branches turned toward him; yet its roots remained where it stood. So it became a vine and yielded branches and sent out shoots.

וַיִּצְמַ֡ח וַיְהִי֩ סֹרַ֜חַת לְגֶ֨פֶן שִׁפְלַ֣ת קוֹמָ֗ה דָּלִיּוֹתָיו֙ לִפְנ֤וֹת אֵלָ֔יו וְשָׁרָשָׁ֖יו יִֽהְי֑וּ תַּחְתָּ֣יו וַתְּהִ֣י לְגֶ֔פֶן וַתַּ֣עַשׂ בַּדִּ֔ים וַתְּשַׁלַּ֖ח פֹּארֽוֹת׃ way·yiṣ·maḥ way·hî sō·ra·ḥaṯ lə·ḡe·p̄en šip̄·laṯ qō·w·māh dā·lî·yō·w·ṯāw lip̄·nō·wṯ ’ê·lāw wə·šā·rā·šāw yih·yū taḥ·tāw wat·tə·hî lə·ḡe·p̄en wat·ta·‘aś bad·dîm wat·tə·šal·laḥ pō·rō·wṯ — WLC · 6

But there was another great eagle with great wings and many feathers. And behold, this vine bent its roots toward him. It stretched out its branches to him from its planting bed, so that he might water it -.

וַיְהִ֤י אֶחָד֙ גָּד֔וֹל נֶֽשֶׁר־ גְּד֥וֹל כְּנָפַ֖יִם וְרַב־ נוֹצָ֑ה וְהִנֵּה֩ הַזֹּ֜את הַגֶּ֨פֶן כָּֽפְנָ֧ה שָׁרֳשֶׁ֣יהָ עָלָ֗יו שִׁלְחָה־ וְדָֽלִיּוֹתָיו֙ לּ֔וֹ מַטָּעָֽהּ׃ מֵעֲרֻג֖וֹת לְהַשְׁק֣וֹת אוֹתָ֔הּ way·hî ’e·ḥāḏ gā·ḏō·wl ne·šer- gə·ḏō·wl kə·nā·p̄a·yim wə·raḇ- nō·w·ṣāh wə·hin·nêh haz·zōṯ hag·ge·p̄en kā·p̄ə·nāh šā·ro·še·hā ‘ā·lāw šil·ḥāh- wə·ḏā·lî·yō·w·ṯāw lōw maṭ·ṭā·‘āh mê·‘ă·ru·ḡō·wṯ lə·haš·qō·wṯ ’ō·w·ṯāh — WLC · 7

It had been planted in good soil by abundant waters in order to yield branches and bear fruit and become a splendid vine.’
𐤄𐤉𐤀 𐤔𐤕𐤅𐤋𐤄 𐤀𐤋 𐤈𐤅𐤁 𐤔𐤃𐤄 𐤀𐤋 𐤓𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤏𐤔𐤅𐤕 𐤏𐤍𐤐 𐤅𐤋𐤔𐤀𐤕 𐤐𐤓𐤉 𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤃𐤓𐤕𐤎 𐤋𐤂𐤐𐤍
הִ֣יא שְׁתוּלָ֑ה אֶל־ טּ֛וֹב שָׂ֥דֶה אֶל־ רַבִּ֖ים מַ֥יִם לַעֲשׂ֤וֹת עָנָף֙ וְלָשֵׂ֣את פֶּ֔רִי לִהְי֖וֹת אַדָּֽרֶת׃ס לְגֶ֥פֶן hî šə·ṯū·lāh ’el- ṭō·wḇ śā·ḏeh ’el- rab·bîm ma·yim la·‘ă·śō·wṯ ‘ā·nāp̄ wə·lā·śêṯ pe·rî lih·yō·wṯ ’ad·dā·reṯ lə·ḡe·p̄en — WLC · 8

So you are to tell them that this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Will it flourish? Will it not be uprooted - and stripped of its fruit so that it shrivels? All its foliage… will wither! It will not take a strong arm or many people to pull it up by its roots.
𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤊𐤄 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤕𐤑𐤋𐤇 𐤄𐤋𐤅𐤀 𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤍𐤕𐤒 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤔𐤓𐤔𐤉𐤄 𐤉𐤒𐤅𐤎𐤎 𐤐𐤓𐤉𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤔 𐤊𐤋 𐤈𐤓𐤐𐤉 𐤑𐤌𐤇𐤄 𐤕𐤉𐤁𐤔 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤂𐤃𐤅𐤋𐤄 𐤁𐤆𐤓𐤏 𐤓𐤁 𐤅𐤁𐤏𐤌 𐤋𐤌𐤔𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤅𐤕𐤄 𐤌𐤔𐤓𐤔𐤉𐤄
אֱמֹ֗ר כֹּ֥ה אֲדֹנָ֥י יְהֹוִ֖ה אָמַ֛ר תִּצְלָ֑ח הֲלוֹא֩ אֶת־ יְנַתֵּ֜ק וְאֶת־ שָׁרָשֶׁ֨יהָ יְקוֹסֵ֣ס פִּרְיָ֣הּ׀ וְיָבֵ֗שׁ כָּל־ טַרְפֵּ֤י צִמְחָהּ֙ תִּיבָ֔שׁ וְלֹֽא־ גְּדוֹלָה֙ בִזְרֹ֤עַ רָ֔ב וּבְעַם־ לְמַשְׂא֥וֹת אוֹתָ֖הּ מִשָּׁרָשֶֽׁיהָ׃ ’ĕ·mōr kōh ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh ’ā·mar tiṣ·lāḥ hă·lō·w ’eṯ- yə·nat·têq wə·’eṯ- šā·rā·še·hā yə·qō·w·sês pir·yāh wə·yā·ḇêš kāl- ṭar·pê ṣim·ḥāh tî·ḇāš wə·lō- gə·ḏō·w·lāh ḇiz·rō·a‘ rāḇ ū·ḇə·‘am- lə·maś·’ō·wṯ ’ō·w·ṯāh miš·šā·rā·še·hā — WLC · 9

- Even if it is transplanted, will it flourish? Will it not completely wither… when the east wind strikes It will wither on the bed where it sprouted.’”

וְהִנֵּ֥ה שְׁתוּלָ֖ה הֲתִצְלָ֑ח הֲלוֹא֩ תִּיבַ֣שׁ יָבֹ֔שׁ הַקָּדִים֙ ר֤וּחַ כְגַ֨עַת בָּ֜הּ תִּיבָֽשׁ׃פ עַל־ עֲרֻגֹ֥ת צִמְחָ֖הּ wə·hin·nêh šə·ṯū·lāh hă·ṯiṣ·lāḥ hă·lō·w tî·ḇaš yā·ḇōš haq·qā·ḏîm rū·aḥ ḵə·ḡa·‘aṯ bāh tî·ḇāš ‘al- ‘ă·ru·ḡōṯ ṣim·ḥāh — WLC · 10
The Parable Explained

Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying,

דְבַר־ יְהוָ֖ה וַיְהִ֥י אֵלַ֥י לֵאמֹֽר׃ ḏə·ḇar- Yah·weh way·hî ’ê·lay lê·mōr — WLC · 11

“Now say to this rebellious house: ‘Do you not know what these [things] [mean]?’ Tell [them], ‘Behold, the king of Babylon came to Jerusalem, carried off its king and officials, and brought them back with him to Babylon.

נָא֙ אֱמָר־ הַמֶּ֔רִי לְבֵ֣ית הֲלֹ֥א יְדַעְתֶּ֖ם מָה־ אֵ֑לֶּה אֱמֹ֗ר הִנֵּה־ מֶֽלֶךְ־ בָּבֶ֤ל בָ֨א יְרוּשָׁלִַ֙ם֙ וַיִּקַּ֤ח אֶת־ מַלְכָּהּ֙ וְאֶת־ שָׂרֶ֔יהָ וַיָּבֵ֥א אוֹתָ֛ם אֵלָ֖יו בָּבֶֽלָה׃ nā ’ĕ·mār- ham·me·rî lə·ḇêṯ hă·lō yə·ḏa‘·tem māh- ’êl·leh ’ĕ·mōr hin·nêh- me·leḵ- bā·ḇel ḇā yə·rū·šā·lim way·yiq·qaḥ ’eṯ- mal·kāh wə·’eṯ- śā·re·hā way·yā·ḇê ’ō·w·ṯām ’ê·lāw bā·ḇe·lāh — WLC · 12

He took a member of the royal family and made a covenant with him, putting him under oath. Then he carried away the leading men of the land,
𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤇 𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤅𐤊𐤄 𐤌𐤆𐤓𐤏 𐤅𐤉𐤊𐤓𐤕 𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤕 𐤀𐤕𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤀 𐤀𐤕𐤅 𐤁𐤀𐤋𐤄 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤋𐤒𐤇 𐤀𐤉𐤋𐤉 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑
וַיִּקַּח֙ הַמְּלוּכָ֔ה מִזֶּ֣רַע וַיִּכְרֹ֥ת בְּרִ֑ית אִתּ֖וֹ וַיָּבֵ֤א אֹתוֹ֙ בְּאָלָ֔ה וְאֶת־ לָקָֽח׃ אֵילֵ֥י הָאָ֖רֶץ way·yiq·qaḥ ham·mə·lū·ḵāh miz·ze·ra‘ way·yiḵ·rōṯ bə·rîṯ ’it·tōw way·yā·ḇê ’ō·ṯōw bə·’ā·lāh wə·’eṯ- lā·qāḥ ’ê·lê hā·’ā·reṣ — WLC · 13

so that the kingdom would be brought low, unable to lift itself up, surviving [only] by keeping his covenant.
𐤌𐤌𐤋𐤊𐤄 𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤅𐤕 𐤔𐤐𐤋𐤄 𐤋𐤁𐤋𐤕𐤉 𐤄𐤕𐤍𐤔𐤀 𐤋𐤏𐤌𐤃𐤄 𐤋𐤔𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤕 𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤕𐤅
מַמְלָכָ֣ה לִֽהְיוֹת֙ שְׁפָלָ֔ה לְבִלְתִּ֖י הִתְנַשֵּׂ֑א לְעָמְדָֽהּ׃ לִשְׁמֹ֥ר אֶת־ בְּרִית֖וֹ mam·lā·ḵāh lih·yō·wṯ šə·p̄ā·lāh lə·ḇil·tî hiṯ·naś·śê lə·‘ā·mə·ḏāh liš·mōr ’eṯ- bə·rî·ṯōw — WLC · 14

But this [king] rebelled against [Babylon] by sending his envoys to Egypt to ask for horses and a large army. Will he flourish? Will the one who does such things escape? Can he break a covenant and yet escape?’
𐤅𐤉𐤌𐤓𐤃 𐤁𐤅 𐤋𐤔𐤋𐤇 𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤊𐤉𐤅 𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤕𐤕 𐤋𐤅 𐤎𐤅𐤎𐤉𐤌 𐤓𐤁 𐤅𐤏𐤌 𐤄𐤉𐤑𐤋𐤇 𐤄𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄 𐤄𐤉𐤌𐤋𐤈 𐤅𐤄𐤐𐤓 𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤕 𐤅𐤍𐤌𐤋𐤈
וַיִּמְרָד־ בּ֗וֹ לִשְׁלֹ֤חַ מַלְאָכָיו֙ מִצְרַ֔יִם לָֽתֶת־ ל֥וֹ סוּסִ֖ים רָ֑ב וְעַם־ הֲיִצְלָ֤ח הָעֹשֵׂ֣ה אֵ֔לֶּה הֲיִמָּלֵט֙ וְהֵפֵ֥ר בְּרִ֖ית וְנִמְלָֽט׃ way·yim·rāḏ- bōw liš·lō·aḥ mal·’ā·ḵāw miṣ·ra·yim lā·ṯeṯ- lōw sū·sîm rāḇ wə·‘am- hă·yiṣ·lāḥ hā·‘ō·śêh ’êl·leh hă·yim·mā·lêṭ wə·hê·p̄êr bə·rîṯ wə·nim·lāṭ — WLC · 15

‘As surely as… I live,’ declares the Lord GOD, ‘he will die in Babylon, in the land of the king who enthroned him, whose oath he despised and whose covenant… he broke. -

אִם־ לֹ֗א אָ֗נִי חַי־ נְאֻם֮ אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִה֒ יָמֽוּת׃ בְתוֹךְ־ בָּבֶ֖ל בִּמְקוֹם֙ הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ הַמַּמְלִ֣יךְ אֹת֔וֹ אֲשֶׁ֤ר אָ֣לָת֔וֹ בָּזָה֙ אֶת־ וַאֲשֶׁ֥ר בְּרִית֑וֹ אִתּ֥וֹ הֵפֵ֖ר אֶת־ ’im- lō ’ā·nî ḥay- nə·’um ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh yā·mūṯ ḇə·ṯō·wḵ- bā·ḇel bim·qō·wm ham·me·leḵ ham·mam·lîḵ ’ō·ṯōw ’ă·šer ’ā·lā·ṯōw bā·zāh ’eṯ- wa·’ă·šer bə·rî·ṯōw ’it·tōw hê·p̄êr ’eṯ- — WLC · 16

Pharaoh with [his] mighty army and vast horde will not help him in battle, when ramps are built and siege walls constructed to destroy many lives.

He despised the oath by breaking the covenant. Seeing that he gave his hand in pledge yet did all these [things], he will not escape!’

Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘As surely as… I live, I will bring down upon his head My oath that he despised and My covenant that he broke.

I will spread My net over him and catch him in My snare. I will bring him to Babylon and execute judgment upon him there for the treason he committed against Me.

- All his choice troops will fall by the sword, and those who survive will be scattered to every wind. Then you will know that I, the LORD, have spoken.’

This is what the Lord GOD says: ‘I will take a shoot from the lofty top of the cedar, and I will set [it] out. I will pluck a tender sprig from its topmost shoots, and I will plant it on a high and lofty mountain.

I will plant it on the mountain heights of Israel so that it will bear branches; it will yield fruit and become a majestic cedar. Birds of every kind will nest under it, taking shelter in the shade of its branches.

אֶשְׁתֳּלֶ֔נּוּ בְּהַ֨ר מְר֤וֹם יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ וְנָשָׂ֤א עָנָף֙ וְעָ֣שָׂה פֶ֔רִי וְהָיָ֖ה אַדִּ֑יר לְאֶ֣רֶז צִפּ֣וֹר כָּל־ כָּנָ֔ף כֹּ֚ל וְשָׁכְנ֣וּ תַחְתָּ֗יו תִּשְׁכֹּֽנָּה׃ בְּצֵ֥ל דָּלִיּוֹתָ֖יו ’eš·to·len·nū bə·har mə·rō·wm yiś·rā·’êl wə·nā·śā ‘ā·nāp̄ wə·‘ā·śāh p̄e·rî wə·hā·yāh ’ad·dîr lə·’e·rez ṣip·pō·wr kāl- kā·nāp̄ kōl wə·šā·ḵə·nū ṯaḥ·tāw tiš·kōn·nāh bə·ṣêl dā·lî·yō·w·ṯāw — WLC · 23

Then all the trees of the field will know that I am the LORD. I bring the tall tree {down} and make the low tree tall. I dry up the green tree and make the withered tree flourish. I, the LORD, have spoken, and I have done [it].’”
