Chapter 18

The Soul Who Sins Will Die

1

Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying,

𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓

דְבַר־ יְהוָ֖ה וַיְהִ֥י אֵלַ֥י לֵאמֹֽר׃ ḏə·ḇar- Yah·weh way·hî ’ê·lay lê·mōrWLC · 1

“What do you people mean by quoting this proverb - about the land of Israel:… ‘The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the teeth of the children are set on edge’?

𐤌𐤄 𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤋𐤊𐤌 𐤄𐤆𐤄 𐤌𐤔𐤋𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤌𐤔𐤋 𐤏𐤋 𐤀𐤃𐤌𐤕 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤁𐤅𐤕 𐤉𐤀𐤊𐤋𐤅 𐤁𐤎𐤓 𐤅𐤔𐤍𐤉 𐤄𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤕𐤒𐤄𐤉𐤍𐤄

מַה־ אַתֶּם֙ לָּכֶ֗ם הַזֶּ֔ה מֹֽשְׁלִים֙ אֶת־ הַמָּשָׁ֣ל עַל־ אַדְמַ֥ת יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל לֵאמֹ֑ר אָבוֹת֙ יֹ֣אכְלוּ בֹ֔סֶר וְשִׁנֵּ֥י הַבָּנִ֖ים תִּקְהֶֽינָה׃ mah- ’at·tem lā·ḵem haz·zeh mō·šə·lîm ’eṯ- ham·mā·šāl ‘al- ’aḏ·maṯ yiś·rā·’êl lê·mōr ’ā·ḇō·wṯ yō·ḵə·lū ḇō·ser wə·šin·nê hab·bā·nîm tiq·he·nāhWLC · 2

As surely as I live, declares the Lord GOD, you will no… longer quote this proverb in Israel.

𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤇𐤉 𐤍𐤀𐤌 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤌 𐤉𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤋𐤊𐤌 𐤏𐤅𐤃 𐤌𐤔𐤋 𐤄𐤆𐤄 𐤄𐤌𐤔𐤋 𐤁𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋

אָ֕נִי חַי־ נְאֻ֖ם אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֑ה אִם־ יִֽהְיֶ֨ה לָכֶ֜ם ע֗וֹד מְשֹׁ֛ל הַזֶּ֖ה הַמָּשָׁ֥ל בְּיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ ’ā·nî ḥay- nə·’um ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh ’im- yih·yeh lā·ḵem ‘ō·wḏ mə·šōl haz·zeh ham·mā·šāl bə·yiś·rā·’êlWLC · 3

Behold, every soul belongs to Me; both father [and] son are Mine. The soul who sins is the one who will die.

𐤄𐤍 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤍𐤐𐤔𐤅𐤕 𐤋𐤉 𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤊𐤍𐤐𐤔 𐤄𐤀𐤁 𐤅𐤊𐤍𐤐𐤔 𐤄𐤁𐤍 𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤋𐤉 𐤄𐤍𐤐𐤔 𐤄𐤇𐤈𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤉𐤀 𐤕𐤌𐤅𐤕𐤎

הֵ֤ן כָּל־ הַנְּפָשׁוֹת֙ לִ֣י הֵ֔נָּה כְּנֶ֧פֶשׁ הָאָ֛ב וּכְנֶ֥פֶשׁ הַבֵּ֖ן הֵ֑נָּה לִי־ הַנֶּ֥פֶשׁ הַחֹטֵ֖את הִ֥יא תָמֽוּת׃ס hên kāl- han·nə·p̄ā·šō·wṯ lî hên·nāh kə·ne·p̄eš hā·’āḇ ū·ḵə·ne·p̄eš hab·bên hên·nāh lî- han·ne·p̄eš ha·ḥō·ṭêṯ hî ṯā·mūṯWLC · 4

Now suppose a man is righteous and does what is just and right:

𐤊𐤉 𐤅𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤉𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤑𐤃𐤉𐤒 𐤅𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤌𐤔𐤐𐤈 𐤅𐤑𐤃𐤒𐤄

כִּי־ וְאִ֖ישׁ יִהְיֶ֣ה צַדִּ֑יק וְעָשָׂ֥ה מִשְׁפָּ֖ט וּצְדָקָֽה׃ kî- wə·’îš yih·yeh ṣad·dîq wə·‘ā·śāh miš·pāṭ ū·ṣə·ḏā·qāhWLC · 5

He does not eat at the mountain [or] look… to the idols of the house of Israel. He does not defile his neighbor’s wife or approach a woman during her period.

𐤋𐤀 𐤀𐤊𐤋 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤄𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤀 𐤍𐤔𐤀 𐤅𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉𐤅 𐤀𐤋 𐤂𐤋𐤅𐤋𐤉 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤋𐤀 𐤈𐤌𐤀 𐤓𐤏𐤄𐤅 𐤀𐤔𐤕 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤒𐤓𐤁 𐤅𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤔𐤄 𐤍𐤃𐤄

לֹ֣א אָכָ֔ל אֶל־ הֶֽהָרִים֙ לֹ֣א נָשָׂ֔א וְעֵינָיו֙ אֶל־ גִּלּוּלֵ֖י בֵּ֣ית יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וְאֶת־ לֹ֣א טִמֵּ֔א רֵעֵ֙הוּ֙ אֵ֤שֶׁת לֹ֥א יִקְרָֽב׃ וְאֶל־ אִשָּׁ֥ה נִדָּ֖ה lō ’ā·ḵāl ’el- he·hā·rîm lō nā·śā wə·‘ê·nāw ’el- gil·lū·lê bêṯ yiś·rā·’êl wə·’eṯ- lō ṭim·mê rê·‘ê·hū ’ê·šeṯ lō yiq·rāḇ wə·’el- ’iš·šāh nid·dāhWLC · 6

He does not oppress another, but restores the pledge to the debtor. He does not commit robbery, but gives his bread to the hungry and covers the naked with clothing.

𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤅𐤍𐤄 𐤅𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤉𐤔𐤉𐤁 𐤇𐤁𐤋𐤕𐤅 𐤇𐤅𐤁 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤂𐤆𐤋 𐤂𐤆𐤋𐤄 𐤉𐤕𐤍 𐤋𐤇𐤌𐤅 𐤋𐤓𐤏𐤁 𐤉𐤊𐤎𐤄 𐤅𐤏𐤉𐤓𐤌 𐤁𐤂𐤃

לֹ֣א יוֹנֶ֔ה וְאִישׁ֙ יָשִׁ֔יב חֲבֹלָת֥וֹ חוֹב֙ לֹ֣א יִגְזֹ֑ל גְּזֵלָ֖ה יִתֵּ֔ן לַחְמוֹ֙ לְרָעֵ֣ב יְכַסֶּה־ וְעֵירֹ֖ם בָּֽגֶד׃ lō yō·w·neh wə·’îš yā·šîḇ ḥă·ḇō·lā·ṯōw ḥō·wḇ lō yiḡ·zōl gə·zê·lāh yit·tên laḥ·mōw lə·rā·‘êḇ yə·ḵas·seh- wə·‘ê·rōm bā·ḡeḏWLC · 7

He does not engage in usury [or] take excess interest, but he withholds his hand from iniquity… [and] executes true justice between men…

𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤕𐤍 𐤁𐤍𐤔𐤊 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤒𐤇 𐤅𐤕𐤓𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤉𐤃𐤅 𐤌𐤏𐤅𐤋 𐤉𐤔𐤉𐤁 𐤉𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤕 𐤌𐤔𐤐𐤈 𐤁𐤉𐤍 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤋𐤀𐤉𐤔

לֹֽא־ יִתֵּ֗ן בַּנֶּ֣שֶׁךְ לֹ֣א יִקָּ֔ח וְתַרְבִּית֙ יָד֑וֹ מֵעָ֖וֶל יָשִׁ֣יב יַֽעֲשֶׂ֔ה אֱמֶת֙ מִשְׁפַּ֤ט בֵּ֥ין אִ֖ישׁ לְאִֽישׁ׃ lō- yit·tên ban·ne·šeḵ lō yiq·qāḥ wə·ṯar·bîṯ yā·ḏōw mê·‘ā·wel yā·šîḇ ya·‘ă·śeh ’ĕ·meṯ miš·paṭ bên ’îš lə·’îšWLC · 8

He follows My statutes and faithfully keeps… My ordinances. [That man] is righteous; surely he will live…, declares the Lord GOD.

𐤉𐤄𐤋𐤊 𐤁𐤇𐤒𐤅𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤌𐤕 𐤔𐤌𐤓 𐤋𐤏𐤔𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤌𐤔𐤐𐤈𐤉 𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤑𐤃𐤉𐤒 𐤇𐤉𐤄 𐤉𐤇𐤉𐤄 𐤍𐤀𐤌 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄

יְהַלֵּ֛ךְ בְּחֻקּוֹתַ֧י אֱמֶ֑ת שָׁמַ֖ר לַעֲשׂ֣וֹת וּמִשְׁפָּטַ֥י הוּא֙ צַדִּ֥יק חָיֹ֣ה יִֽחְיֶ֔ה נְאֻ֖ם אֲדֹנָ֥י יְהוִֽה׃ yə·hal·lêḵ bə·ḥuq·qō·w·ṯay ’ĕ·meṯ šā·mar la·‘ă·śō·wṯ ū·miš·pā·ṭay hū ṣad·dîq ḥā·yōh yiḥ·yeh nə·’um ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·wehWLC · 9

Now suppose [that man] has a violent son, who sheds blood or does… any of these [things],

𐤅𐤄𐤅𐤋𐤉𐤃 𐤐𐤓𐤉𐤑 𐤁𐤍 𐤔𐤐𐤊 𐤃𐤌 𐤅𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤀𐤇 𐤌𐤀𐤇𐤃 𐤌𐤀𐤋𐤄

וְהוֹלִ֥יד פָּרִ֖יץ בֵּן־ שֹׁפֵ֣ךְ דָּ֑ם וְעָ֣שָׂה אָ֔ח מֵאַחַ֖ד מֵאֵֽלֶּה׃ wə·hō·w·lîḏ pā·rîṣ bên- šō·p̄êḵ dām wə·‘ā·śāh ’āḥ mê·’a·ḥaḏ mê·’êl·lehWLC · 10

though the father has done… none… of them: Indeed, the son eats at the mountain and defiles his neighbor’s wife.

𐤅𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤀𐤕 𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤊𐤉 𐤊𐤋 𐤋𐤀 𐤀𐤋𐤄 𐤂𐤌 𐤀𐤊𐤋 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤄𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤈𐤌𐤀 𐤓𐤏𐤄𐤅 𐤀𐤔𐤕

וְה֕וּא אֶת־ עָשָׂ֑ה כִּ֣י כָּל־ לֹ֣א אֵ֖לֶּה גַ֤ם אָכַ֔ל וְאֶת־ אֶל־ הֶֽהָרִים֙ טִמֵּֽא׃ רֵעֵ֖הוּ אֵ֥שֶׁת wə·hū ’eṯ- ‘ā·śāh kî kāl- lō ’êl·leh ḡam ’ā·ḵal wə·’eṯ- ’el- he·hā·rîm ṭim·mê rê·‘ê·hū ’ê·šeṯWLC · 11

He oppresses the poor and needy; he commits robbery… and does not restore a pledge. He lifts his eyes to idols; he commits abominations.

𐤄𐤅𐤍𐤄 𐤏𐤍𐤉 𐤅𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤅𐤍 𐤂𐤆𐤋𐤅𐤕 𐤂𐤆𐤋 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤔𐤉𐤁 𐤇𐤁𐤋 𐤍𐤔𐤀 𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤂𐤋𐤅𐤋𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤕𐤅𐤏𐤁𐤄

הוֹנָ֔ה עָנִ֤י וְאֶבְיוֹן֙ גְּזֵל֣וֹת גָּזָ֔ל לֹ֣א יָשִׁ֑יב חֲבֹ֖ל נָשָׂ֣א עֵינָ֔יו וְאֶל־ הַגִּלּוּלִים֙ עָשָֽׂה׃ תּוֹעֵבָ֖ה hō·w·nāh ‘ā·nî wə·’eḇ·yō·wn gə·zê·lō·wṯ gā·zāl lō yā·šîḇ ḥă·ḇōl nā·śā ‘ê·nāw wə·’el- hag·gil·lū·lîm ‘ā·śāh tō·w·‘ê·ḇāhWLC · 12

He engages in usury and takes excess interest. Will [this son] live? He will not…! Since he has committed all these abominations, he will surely die…; his blood will be on his own head.

𐤍𐤕𐤍 𐤁𐤍𐤔𐤊 𐤋𐤒𐤇 𐤅𐤕𐤓𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤅𐤇𐤉 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤇𐤉𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤋𐤄 𐤄𐤕𐤅𐤏𐤁𐤅𐤕 𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤉𐤅𐤌𐤕 𐤃𐤌𐤉𐤅 𐤉𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤁𐤅

נָתַ֛ן בַּנֶּ֧שֶׁךְ לָקַ֖ח וְתַרְבִּ֥ית וָחָ֑י לֹ֣א יִֽחְיֶ֗ה אֵ֣ת עָשָׂ֔ה כָּל־ הָאֵ֙לֶּה֙ הַתּוֹעֵב֤וֹת מ֣וֹת יוּמָ֔ת דָּמָ֖יו יִהְיֶֽה׃ בּ֥וֹ nā·ṯan ban·ne·šeḵ lā·qaḥ wə·ṯar·bîṯ wā·ḥāy lō yiḥ·yeh ’êṯ ‘ā·śāh kāl- hā·’êl·leh hat·tō·w·‘ê·ḇō·wṯ mō·wṯ yū·māṯ dā·māw yih·yeh bōwWLC · 13

Now suppose [this son] has a son who sees all the sins his father has committed, considers them, and does not do likewise…:

𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤄𐤅𐤋𐤉𐤃 𐤁𐤍 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤀 𐤀𐤕 𐤊𐤋 𐤇𐤈𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤅 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤀𐤄 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤊𐤄𐤍

וְהִנֵּה֙ הוֹלִ֣יד בֵּ֔ן וַיַּ֕רְא אֶת־ כָּל־ חַטֹּ֥את אָבִ֖יו אֲשֶׁ֣ר עָשָׂ֑ה וַיִּרְאֶ֕ה וְלֹ֥א יַעֲשֶׂ֖ה כָּהֵֽן׃ wə·hin·nêh hō·w·lîḏ bên way·yar ’eṯ- kāl- ḥaṭ·ṭōṯ ’ā·ḇîw ’ă·šer ‘ā·śāh way·yir·’eh wə·lō ya·‘ă·śeh kā·hênWLC · 14

לֹ֣א הוֹנָ֔ה וְאִישׁ֙ חָבָ֔ל חֲבֹל֙ לֹ֣א גָזָ֑ל וּגְזֵלָ֖ה לֹ֣א נָתָ֔ן לַחְמוֹ֙ לְרָעֵ֣ב כִּסָּה־ וְעֵר֖וֹם בָֽגֶד׃ lō hō·w·nāh wə·’îš ḥā·ḇāl ḥă·ḇōl lō ḡā·zāl ū·ḡə·zê·lāh lō nā·ṯān laḥ·mōw lə·rā·‘êḇ kis·sāh- wə·‘ê·rō·wm ḇā·ḡeḏWLC · 16

He withholds his hand {from harming} the poor and takes no interest or usury. He keeps My ordinances and follows My statutes. Such a man will not die for his father’s iniquity. He will surely live…

𐤄𐤔𐤉𐤁 𐤉𐤃𐤅 𐤌𐤏𐤍𐤉 𐤋𐤒𐤇 𐤋𐤀 𐤍𐤔𐤊 𐤅𐤕𐤓𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤌𐤔𐤐𐤈𐤉 𐤄𐤋𐤊 𐤁𐤇𐤒𐤅𐤕𐤉 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤅 𐤁𐤏𐤅𐤍 𐤇𐤉𐤄 𐤉𐤇𐤉𐤄

הֵשִׁ֣יב יָד֗וֹ מֵעָנִ֞י לָקָ֔ח לֹ֣א נֶ֤שֶׁךְ וְתַרְבִּית֙ ה֗וּא עָשָׂ֔ה מִשְׁפָּטַ֣י הָלָ֑ךְ בְּחֻקּוֹתַ֖י לֹ֥א יָמ֛וּת אָבִ֖יו בַּעֲוֺ֥ן חָיֹ֥ה יִחְיֶֽה׃ hê·šîḇ yā·ḏōw mê·‘ā·nî lā·qāḥ lō ne·šeḵ wə·ṯar·bîṯ hū ‘ā·śāh miš·pā·ṭay hā·lāḵ bə·ḥuq·qō·w·ṯay lō yā·mūṯ ’ā·ḇîw ba·‘ă·wōn ḥā·yōh yiḥ·yehWLC · 17

As for his father, he will die for his own iniquity, because he practiced extortion, robbed… his brother, and did what was wrong… among his people…

𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤅 𐤌𐤕 𐤁𐤏𐤅𐤍𐤅 𐤊𐤉 𐤏𐤔𐤒 𐤏𐤔𐤒 𐤂𐤆𐤋 𐤂𐤆𐤋 𐤀𐤇 𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤅𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤋𐤀 𐤈𐤅𐤁 𐤁𐤕𐤅𐤊 𐤏𐤌𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤄

אָבִ֞יו מֵ֖ת בַּעֲוֺנֽוֹ׃ כִּֽי־ עָ֣שַׁק עֹ֗שֶׁק גָּזַל֙ גֵּ֣זֶל אָ֔ח עָשָׂ֖ה וַאֲשֶׁ֥ר לֹא־ ט֛וֹב בְּת֣וֹךְ עַמָּ֑יו וְהִנֵּה־ ’ā·ḇîw mêṯ ba·‘ă·wō·nōw kî- ‘ā·šaq ‘ō·šeq gā·zal gê·zel ’āḥ ‘ā·śāh wa·’ă·šer lō- ṭō·wḇ bə·ṯō·wḵ ‘am·māw wə·hin·nêh-WLC · 18

Yet you may ask, ‘Why shouldn’t the son… bear the iniquity of his father?’ Since the son has done what is just and right, carefully observing all My statutes, he will surely live…

The soul who sins is the one who will die. A son will not bear the iniquity of his father, and a father will not bear the iniquity of his son. The righteousness of the righteous man will fall upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked man will fall upon him.

הַנֶּ֥פֶשׁ הַחֹטֵ֖את הִ֣יא תָמ֑וּת בֵּ֞ן לֹא־ יִשָּׂ֣א׀ בַּעֲוֺ֣ן הָאָ֗ב וְאָב֙ לֹ֤א יִשָּׂא֙ בַּעֲוֺ֣ן הַבֵּ֔ן צִדְקַ֤ת הַצַּדִּיק֙ תִּֽהְיֶ֔ה עָלָ֣יו וְרִשְׁעַ֥ת רָשָׁע תִּֽהְיֶֽה׃ס עָלָ֥יו han·ne·p̄eš ha·ḥō·ṭêṯ hî ṯā·mūṯ bên lō- yiś·śā ba·‘ă·wōn hā·’āḇ wə·’āḇ lō yiś·śā ba·‘ă·wōn hab·bên ṣiḏ·qaṯ haṣ·ṣad·dîq tih·yeh ‘ā·lāw wə·riš·‘aṯ rå̄·šå̄ʿ tih·yeh ‘ā·lāwWLC · 20

But if the wicked man turns from all the sins he has committed, keeps all My statutes, and does what is just and right, he will surely live…; he will not die.

כִּ֤י וְהָרָשָׁ֗ע יָשׁוּב֙ מִכָּל־ חַטָּאתוֹ אֲשֶׁ֣ר עָשָׂ֔ה וְשָׁמַר֙ אֶת־ כָּל־ חֻקּוֹתַ֔י וְעָשָׂ֥ה מִשְׁפָּ֖ט וּצְדָקָ֑ה חָיֹ֥ה יִחְיֶ֖ה לֹ֥א יָמֽוּת׃ kî wə·hā·rā·šā‘ yā·šūḇ mik·kāl ḥaṭ·ṭå̄·ṯō ’ă·šer ‘ā·śāh wə·šā·mar ’eṯ- kāl- ḥu·qō·w·ṯay wə·‘ā·śāh miš·pāṭ ū·ṣə·ḏā·qāh ḥā·yōh yiḥ·yeh lō yā·mūṯWLC · 21

None… of the transgressions he has committed will be held against him. Because of the righteousness he has practiced, he will live.

Do I take any pleasure in… the death of the wicked? declares the Lord GOD. Wouldn’t I prefer that he turn from his ways and live?

But if a righteous man turns from his righteousness and practices iniquity, committing the same abominations as the wicked…, will he live?… None of the righteous acts he did will be remembered. Because of the unfaithfulness - and sin he has committed, he will die

צַדִּ֤יק וּבְשׁ֨וּב מִצִּדְקָתוֹ֙ וְעָ֣שָׂה עָ֔וֶל כְּכֹ֨ל עָשָׂ֧ה הַתּוֹעֵב֜וֹת אֲשֶׁר־ הָרָשָׁ֛ע יַעֲשֶׂ֖ה וָחָ֑י כָּל־ לֹ֣א צִדְקָתוֹ אֲשֶׁר־ עָשָׂה֙ תִזָּכַ֔רְנָה מָעַ֛ל בְּמַעֲל֧וֹ אֲשֶׁר־ וּבְחַטָּאת֥וֹ אֲשֶׁר־ חָטָ֖א יָמֽוּת׃ בָּ֥ם ṣad·dîq ū·ḇə·šūḇ miṣ·ṣiḏ·qā·ṯōw wə·‘ā·śāh ‘ā·wel kə·ḵōl ‘ā·śāh hat·tō·w·‘ê·ḇō·wṯ ’ă·šer- hā·rā·šā‘ ya·‘ă·śeh wā·ḥāy kāl- lō ṣiḏ·qå̄·ṯō ’ă·šer- ‘ā·śāh ṯiz·zā·ḵar·nāh mā·‘al bə·ma·‘ă·lōw ’ă·šer- ū·ḇə·ḥaṭ·ṭā·ṯōw ’ă·šer- ḥā·ṭā yā·mūṯ bāmWLC · 24

Yet you say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ Hear now, O house of Israel: Is it My way that is unjust…? Is it not your ways that are unjust…?

וַאֲמַרְתֶּ֕ם דֶּ֣רֶךְ אֲדֹנָ֑י לֹ֥א יִתָּכֵ֖ן שִׁמְעוּ־ נָא֙ בֵּ֣ית יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל הֲדַרְכִּי֙ לֹ֣א יִתָּכֵ֔ן הֲלֹ֥א דַרְכֵיכֶ֖ם לֹ֥א יִתָּכֵֽנוּ׃ wa·’ă·mar·tem de·reḵ ’ă·ḏō·nāy lō yit·tā·ḵên šim·‘ū- nā bêṯ yiś·rā·’êl hă·ḏar·kî lō yit·tā·ḵên hă·lō ḏar·ḵê·ḵem lō yit·tā·ḵê·nūWLC · 25

If a righteous man turns from his righteousness and practices iniquity, he will die for this. He will die because of the iniquity he has committed.

But if a wicked man turns from the wickedness he has committed and does what is just and right, he will save his life.

Because he considered and turned from all the transgressions he had committed, he will surely live…; he will not die.

Yet the house of Israel says, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ Are My ways unjust O house of Israel? Is it not your ways that are unjust…?

Therefore, O house of Israel, I will judge you, each according to his ways, declares the Lord GOD. Repent and turn from all your transgressions, so that your iniquity will not become your downfall.

לָכֵן֩ בֵּ֣ית יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל אֶשְׁפֹּ֤ט אֶתְכֶם֙ אִ֨ישׁ כִּדְרָכָ֜יו נְאֻ֖ם אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֑ה שׁ֤וּבוּ וְהָשִׁ֙יבוּ֙ מִכָּל־ פִּשְׁעֵיכֶ֔ם עָוֺֽן׃ וְלֹֽא־ יִהְיֶ֥ה לָכֶ֛ם לְמִכְשׁ֖וֹל lā·ḵên bêṯ yiś·rā·’êl ’eš·pōṭ ’eṯ·ḵem ’îš kiḏ·rā·ḵāw nə·’um ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh šū·ḇū wə·hā·šî·ḇū mik·kāl piš·‘ê·ḵem ‘ā·wōn wə·lō- yih·yeh lā·ḵem lə·miḵ·šō·wlWLC · 30

Cast away from yourselves all the transgressions you have committed and fashion for yourselves a new heart and a new spirit. Why should you die, O house of Israel?

הַשְׁלִ֣יכוּ מֵעֲלֵיכֶ֗ם אֶת־ כָּל־ פִּשְׁעֵיכֶם֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר פְּשַׁעְתֶּ֣ם בָּ֔ם וַעֲשׂ֥וּ לָכֶ֛ם חָדָ֖שׁ לֵ֥ב חֲדָשָׁ֑ה וְר֣וּחַ וְלָ֥מָּה תָמֻ֖תוּ בֵּ֥ית יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ haš·lî·ḵū mê·‘ă·lê·ḵem ’eṯ- kāl- piš·‘ê·ḵem ’ă·šer pə·ša‘·tem bām wa·‘ă·śū lā·ḵem ḥā·ḏāš lêḇ ḥă·ḏā·šāh wə·rū·aḥ wə·lām·māh ṯā·mu·ṯū bêṯ yiś·rā·’êlWLC · 31

For I take no pleasure in anyone’s death…, declares the Lord GOD. So repent and live!
