Chapter 21

God’s Sword of Judgment

1

And the word of the LORD came to me, saying,

𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓

דְבַר־ יְהוָ֖ה וַיְהִ֥י אֵלַ֥י לֵאמֹֽר׃ ḏə·ḇar- Yah·weh way·hî ’ê·lay lê·mōrWLC · 1

“Son of man, set your face against Jerusalem and preach against the sanctuaries. Prophesy against the land of Israel

𐤁𐤍 𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤊 𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤓𐤅𐤔𐤋𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤈𐤐 𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤒𐤃𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤁𐤀 𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤃𐤌𐤕 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋

בֶּן־ אָדָ֗ם שִׂ֤ים פָּנֶ֙יךָ֙ אֶל־ יְר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔ם וְהַטֵּ֖ף אֶל־ מִקְדָּשִׁ֑ים וְהִנָּבֵ֖א אֶל־ אַדְמַ֥ת יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ ben- ’ā·ḏām śîm pā·ne·ḵā ’el- yə·rū·šā·lim wə·haṭ·ṭêp̄ ’el- miq·dā·šîm wə·hin·nā·ḇê ’el- ’aḏ·maṯ yiś·rā·’êlWLC · 2

and tell… [her] that this is what the LORD… says: ‘I am against you, and I will draw My sword from its sheath and cut off from you both the righteous and the wicked.

𐤅𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤕 𐤋𐤀𐤃𐤌𐤕 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤊𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤄𐤍𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤊 𐤅𐤄𐤅𐤑𐤀𐤕𐤉 𐤇𐤓𐤁𐤉 𐤌𐤕𐤏𐤓𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤊𐤓𐤕𐤉 𐤌𐤌𐤊 𐤑𐤃𐤉𐤒 𐤅𐤓𐤔𐤏

וְאָמַרְתָּ֞ לְאַדְמַ֣ת יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל כֹּ֚ה יְהוָ֔ה הִנְנִ֣י אָמַ֣ר אֵלַ֔יִךְ וְהוֹצֵאתִ֥י חַרְבִּ֖י מִתַּעְרָ֑הּ וְהִכְרַתִּ֥י מִמֵּ֖ךְ צַדִּ֥יק וְרָשָֽׁע׃ wə·’ā·mar·tā lə·’aḏ·maṯ yiś·rā·’êl kōh Yah·weh hin·nî ’ā·mar ’ê·la·yiḵ wə·hō·w·ṣê·ṯî ḥar·bî mit·ta‘·rāh wə·hiḵ·rat·tî mim·mêḵ ṣad·dîq wə·rā·šā‘WLC · 3

Because I will cut off both the righteous and the wicked, My sword will be unsheathed against everyone… from south to north.

𐤉𐤏𐤍 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤄𐤊𐤓𐤕𐤉 𐤌𐤌𐤊 𐤑𐤃𐤉𐤒 𐤅𐤓𐤔𐤏 𐤇𐤓𐤁𐤉 𐤋𐤊𐤍 𐤕𐤑𐤀 𐤌𐤕𐤏𐤓𐤄 𐤀𐤋 𐤊𐤋 𐤁𐤔𐤓 𐤌𐤍𐤂𐤁 𐤑𐤐𐤅𐤍

יַ֛עַן אֲשֶׁר־ הִכְרַ֥תִּי מִמֵּ֖ךְ צַדִּ֣יק וְרָשָׁ֑ע חַרְבִּ֧י לָ֠כֵן תֵּצֵ֨א מִתַּעְרָ֛הּ אֶל־ כָּל־ בָּשָׂ֖ר מִנֶּ֥גֶב צָפֽוֹן׃ ya·‘an ’ă·šer- hiḵ·rat·tî mim·mêḵ ṣad·dîq wə·rā·šā‘ ḥar·bî lā·ḵên tê·ṣê mit·ta‘·rāh ’el- kāl- bā·śār min·ne·ḡeḇ ṣā·p̄ō·wnWLC · 4

Then all flesh will know that I, the LORD, have taken My sword from its sheath, not to return it again.’

𐤊𐤋 𐤁𐤔𐤓 𐤅𐤉𐤃𐤏𐤅 𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤄𐤅𐤑𐤀𐤕𐤉 𐤇𐤓𐤁𐤉 𐤌𐤕𐤏𐤓𐤄 𐤋𐤀 𐤕𐤔𐤅𐤁 𐤏𐤅𐤃𐤎

כָּל־ בָּשָׂ֔ר וְיָֽדְעוּ֙ כִּ֚י אֲנִ֣י יְהוָ֔ה הוֹצֵ֥אתִי חַרְבִּ֖י מִתַּעְרָ֑הּ לֹ֥א תָשׁ֖וּב עֽוֹד׃ס kāl- bā·śār wə·yā·ḏə·‘ū kî ’ă·nî Yah·weh hō·w·ṣê·ṯî ḥar·bî mit·ta‘·rāh lō ṯā·šūḇ ‘ō·wḏWLC · 5

But you, son of man, groan! Groan before their eyes with a broken heart and bitter grief.

𐤅𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤁𐤍 𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤄𐤀𐤍𐤇 𐤕𐤀𐤍𐤇 𐤋𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤁𐤔𐤁𐤓𐤅𐤍 𐤌𐤕𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤁𐤌𐤓𐤉𐤓𐤅𐤕

וְאַתָּ֥ה בֶן־ אָדָ֖ם הֵֽאָנַ֑ח תֵּֽאָנַ֖ח לְעֵינֵיהֶֽם׃ בְּשִׁבְר֤וֹן מָתְנַ֙יִם֙ וּבִמְרִיר֔וּת wə·’at·tāh ḇen- ’ā·ḏām hê·’ā·naḥ tê·’ā·naḥ lə·‘ê·nê·hem bə·šiḇ·rō·wn mā·ṯə·na·yim ū·ḇim·rî·rūṯWLC · 6

And when they ask ‘Why… are you groaning?’ you are to say, ‘Because of the news that is coming. Every heart will melt, and every hand will go limp. Every spirit will faint, and every knee will turn to water.’ Yes, it is coming and it will surely happen, declares the Lord GOD.”

𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤊𐤉 𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤅 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤊 𐤏𐤋 𐤌𐤄 𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤍𐤀𐤍𐤇 𐤅𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤕 𐤀𐤋 𐤔𐤌𐤅𐤏𐤄 𐤊𐤉 𐤁𐤀𐤄 𐤊𐤋 𐤋𐤁 𐤅𐤍𐤌𐤎 𐤊𐤋 𐤉𐤃𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤓𐤐𐤅 𐤊𐤋 𐤓𐤅𐤇 𐤅𐤊𐤄𐤕𐤄 𐤅𐤊𐤋 𐤁𐤓𐤊𐤉𐤌 𐤕𐤋𐤊𐤍𐤄 𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤁𐤀𐤄 𐤅𐤍𐤄𐤉𐤕𐤄 𐤍𐤀𐤌 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄𐤐

וְהָיָה֙ כִּֽי־ יֹאמְר֣וּ אֵלֶ֔יךָ עַל־ מָ֖ה אַתָּ֣ה נֶאֱנָ֑ח וְאָמַרְתָּ֡ אֶל־ שְׁמוּעָ֣ה כִֽי־ בָאָ֡ה כָּל־ לֵב֩ וְנָמֵ֣ס כָל־ יָדַ֜יִם וְרָפ֨וּ כָל־ ר֗וּחַ וְכִהֲתָ֣ה וְכָל־ בִּרְכַּ֙יִם֙ תֵּלַ֣כְנָה מַּ֔יִם הִנֵּ֤ה בָאָה֙ וְנִֽהְיָ֔תָה נְאֻ֖ם אֲדֹנָ֥י יְהוִֽה׃פ wə·hā·yāh kî- yō·mə·rū ’ê·le·ḵā ‘al- māh ’at·tāh ne·’ĕ·nāḥ wə·’ā·mar·tā ’el- šə·mū·‘āh ḵî- ḇā·’āh kāl- lêḇ wə·nā·mês ḵāl yā·ḏa·yim wə·rā·p̄ū ḵāl rū·aḥ wə·ḵi·hă·ṯāh wə·ḵāl bir·ka·yim tê·laḵ·nāh ma·yim hin·nêh ḇā·’āh wə·nih·yā·ṯāh nə·’um ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·wehWLC · 7

Again the word of the LORD came to me, saying,

𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓

דְבַר־ יְהוָ֖ה וַיְהִ֥י אֵלַ֥י לֵאמֹֽר׃ ḏə·ḇar- Yah·weh way·hî ’ê·lay lê·mōrWLC · 8

“Son of man, prophesy and tell them that this is what the Lord… says: ‘A sword, a sword, sharpened and polished—

𐤁𐤍 𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤄𐤍𐤁𐤀 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤊𐤄 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤅𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤕 𐤇𐤓𐤁 𐤇𐤓𐤁 𐤄𐤅𐤇𐤃𐤄 𐤅𐤂𐤌 𐤌𐤓𐤅𐤈𐤄

בֶּן־ אָדָ֕ם הִנָּבֵא֙ אָמַ֣ר כֹּ֖ה אֲדֹנָ֑י אֱמֹ֕ר וְאָ֣מַרְתָּ֔ חֶ֥רֶב חֶ֛רֶב הוּחַ֖דָּה וְגַם־ מְרוּטָֽה׃ ben- ’ā·ḏām hin·nā·ḇê ’ā·mar kōh ’ă·ḏō·nāy ’ĕ·mōr wə·’ā·mar·tā ḥe·reḇ ḥe·reḇ hū·ḥad·dāh wə·ḡam- mə·rū·ṭāhWLC · 9

it is sharpened… for the slaughter…, polished… to flash like lightning! Should we rejoice in the scepter of My son? The sword despises every such stick.

𐤄𐤅𐤇𐤃𐤄 𐤋𐤌𐤏𐤍 𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤋𐤄 𐤋𐤌𐤏𐤍 𐤈𐤁𐤇 𐤈𐤁𐤇 𐤌𐤓𐤈𐤄 𐤀𐤅 𐤁𐤓𐤒 𐤍𐤔𐤉𐤔 𐤔𐤁𐤈 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤌𐤀𐤎𐤕 𐤊𐤋 𐤏𐤑

הוּחַ֔דָּה לְמַעַן־ הֱיֵה־ לָ֥הּ לְמַ֨עַן טֶ֙בַח֙ טְבֹ֤חַ מֹרָ֑טָּה א֣וֹ בָּ֖רָק נָשִׂ֔ישׂ שֵׁ֥בֶט בְּנִ֖י מֹאֶ֥סֶת כָּל־ עֵֽץ׃ hū·ḥad·dāh lə·ma·‘an- hĕ·yêh- lāh lə·ma·‘an ṭe·ḇaḥ ṭə·ḇō·aḥ mō·rāṭ·ṭāh ’ōw bā·rāq nā·śîś šê·ḇeṭ bə·nî mō·’e·seṯ kāl- ‘êṣWLC · 10

The sword is appointed to be polished, to be grasped in the hand. It is sharpened and polished, to be placed in the hand of the slayer.

𐤇𐤓𐤁 𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤍 𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤋𐤌𐤓𐤈𐤄 𐤋𐤕𐤐𐤔 𐤁𐤊𐤐 𐤄𐤉𐤀 𐤄𐤅𐤇𐤃𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤀 𐤌𐤓𐤈𐤄 𐤋𐤕𐤕 𐤀𐤅𐤕𐤄 𐤁𐤉𐤃 𐤄𐤅𐤓𐤂

חֶ֙רֶב֙ וַיִּתֵּ֥ן אֹתָ֛הּ לְמָרְטָ֖ה לִתְפֹּ֣שׂ בַּכָּ֑ף הִֽיא־ הוּחַ֤דָּה וְהִ֣יא מֹרָ֔טָּה לָתֵ֥ת אוֹתָ֖הּ בְּיַד־ הוֹרֵֽג׃ ḥe·reḇ way·yit·tên ’ō·ṯāh lə·mā·rə·ṭāh liṯ·pōś bak·kāp̄ hî- hū·ḥad·dāh wə·hî mō·rāṭ·ṭāh lā·ṯêṯ ’ō·w·ṯāh bə·yaḏ- hō·w·rêḡWLC · 11

Cry out and wail, O son of man, for [the sword] is wielded against My people; it is against all the princes of Israel! They are tossed to the sword with My people; therefore strike… your thigh.

𐤆𐤏𐤒 𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤋𐤋 𐤁𐤍 𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤊𐤉 𐤄𐤉𐤀 𐤄𐤉𐤕𐤄 𐤁𐤏𐤌𐤉 𐤄𐤉𐤀 𐤁𐤊𐤋 𐤍𐤔𐤉𐤀𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤉𐤅 𐤌𐤂𐤅𐤓𐤉 𐤀𐤋 𐤇𐤓𐤁 𐤀𐤕 𐤏𐤌𐤉 𐤋𐤊𐤍 𐤎𐤐𐤒 𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤓𐤊

זְעַ֤ק וְהֵילֵל֙ בֶּן־ אָדָ֔ם כִּי־ הִיא֙ הָיתָ֣ה בְעַמִּ֔י הִ֖יא בְּכָל־ נְשִׂיאֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל הָי֣וּ מְגוּרֵ֤י אֶל־ חֶ֙רֶב֙ אֶת־ עַמִּ֔י לָכֵ֖ן סְפֹ֥ק אֶל־ יָרֵֽךְ׃ zə·‘aq wə·hê·lêl ben- ’ā·ḏām kî- hî hå̄y·ṯå̄h ḇə·‘am·mî hî bə·ḵāl nə·śî·’ê yiś·rā·’êl hā·yū mə·ḡū·rê ’el- ḥe·reḇ ’eṯ- ‘am·mî lā·ḵên sə·p̄ōq ’el- yā·rêḵWLC · 12

Surely testing will come! And what if even the scepter, [which the] [sword] despises, does not continue?’ declares the Lord GOD.

𐤊𐤉 𐤁𐤇𐤍 𐤅𐤌𐤄 𐤀𐤌 𐤂𐤌 𐤔𐤁𐤈 𐤌𐤀𐤎𐤕 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤍𐤀𐤌 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄𐤐

כִּ֣י בֹ֔חַן וּמָ֕ה אִם־ גַּם־ שֵׁ֥בֶט מֹאֶ֖סֶת לֹ֣א יִֽהְיֶ֑ה נְאֻ֖ם אֲדֹנָ֥י יְהוִֽה׃פ kî ḇō·ḥan ū·māh ’im- gam- šê·ḇeṭ mō·’e·seṯ lō yih·yeh nə·’um ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·wehWLC · 13

‘So then, son of man, prophesy and strike your hands together… Let the sword strike two times, even three. It is a sword [that] slays, a sword of great slaughter closing in on every side…!

𐤅𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤁𐤍 𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤄𐤍𐤁𐤀 𐤅𐤄𐤊 𐤊𐤐 𐤀𐤋 𐤊𐤐 𐤇𐤓𐤁 𐤅𐤕𐤊𐤐𐤋 𐤔𐤋𐤉𐤔𐤕𐤄 𐤄𐤉𐤀 𐤇𐤓𐤁 𐤇𐤋𐤋𐤉𐤌 𐤇𐤓𐤁 𐤄𐤂𐤃𐤅𐤋 𐤇𐤋𐤋 𐤄𐤇𐤃𐤓𐤕 𐤋𐤄𐤌

וְאַתָּ֣ה בֶן־ אָדָ֔ם הִנָּבֵ֕א וְהַ֖ךְ כַּ֣ף אֶל־ כָּ֑ף חֶ֤רֶב וְתִכָּפֵ֞ל שְׁלִישִׁ֙תָה֙ הִ֗יא חֶ֣רֶב חֲלָלִ֔ים חֶ֚רֶב הַגָּד֔וֹל חָלָ֣ל הַחֹדֶ֖רֶת לָהֶֽם׃ wə·’at·tāh ḇen- ’ā·ḏām hin·nā·ḇê wə·haḵ kap̄ ’el- kāp̄ ḥe·reḇ wə·ṯik·kā·p̄êl šə·lî·ši·ṯāh hî ḥe·reḇ ḥă·lā·lîm ḥe·reḇ hag·gā·ḏō·wl ḥā·lāl ha·ḥō·ḏe·reṯ lā·hemWLC · 14

So that their hearts may melt and many may stumble, I have appointed at all their gates a sword for slaughter. Yes, it is ready to flash like lightning; it is drawn for slaughter.

𐤋𐤌𐤏𐤍 𐤋𐤁 𐤋𐤌𐤅𐤂 𐤅𐤄𐤓𐤁𐤄 𐤄𐤌𐤊𐤔𐤋𐤉𐤌 𐤍𐤕𐤕𐤉 𐤏𐤋 𐤊𐤋 𐤔𐤏𐤓𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤇𐤓𐤁 𐤀𐤁𐤇𐤕 𐤀𐤇 𐤏𐤔𐤅𐤉𐤄 𐤋𐤁𐤓𐤒 𐤌𐤏𐤈𐤄 𐤋𐤈𐤁𐤇

לְמַ֣עַן׀ לֵ֗ב לָמ֣וּג וְהַרְבֵּה֙ הַמִּכְשֹׁלִ֔ים נָתַ֖תִּי עַ֚ל כָּל־ שַׁ֣עֲרֵיהֶ֔ם חָ֑רֶב אִבְחַת־ אָ֛ח עֲשׂוּיָ֥ה לְבָרָ֖ק מְעֻטָּ֥ה לְטָֽבַח׃ lə·ma·‘an lêḇ lā·mūḡ wə·har·bêh ham·miḵ·šō·lîm nā·ṯat·tî ‘al kāl- ša·‘ă·rê·hem ḥā·reḇ ’iḇ·ḥaṯ- ’āḥ ‘ă·śū·yāh lə·ḇā·rāq mə·‘uṭ·ṭāh lə·ṭā·ḇaḥWLC · 15

Slash to the right; set your blade to the left— wherever your blade is directed.

𐤄𐤕𐤀𐤇𐤃𐤉 𐤄𐤉𐤌𐤍𐤉 𐤄𐤔𐤉𐤌𐤉 𐤄𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤋𐤉 𐤀𐤍𐤄 𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤊 𐤌𐤏𐤃𐤅𐤕

הִתְאַחֲדִ֥י הֵימִ֖נִי הָשִׂ֣ימִי הַשְׂמִ֑ילִי אָ֖נָה פָּנַ֥יִךְ מֻעָדֽוֹת׃ hiṯ·’a·ḥă·ḏî hê·mi·nî hā·śî·mî haś·mî·lî ’ā·nāh pā·na·yiḵ mu·‘ā·ḏō·wṯWLC · 16

17

I too will strike My hands together,… and I will satisfy My wrath.’ I, the LORD, have spoken.”

𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤅𐤂𐤌 𐤀𐤊𐤄 𐤊𐤐𐤉 𐤀𐤋 𐤊𐤐𐤉 𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤇𐤕𐤉 𐤇𐤌𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤕𐤉𐤐

אֲנִ֗י וְגַם־ אַכֶּ֤ה כַפִּי֙ אֶל־ כַּפִּ֔י וַהֲנִחֹתִ֖י חֲמָתִ֑י אֲנִ֥י יְהוָ֖ה דִּבַּֽרְתִּי׃פ ’ă·nî wə·ḡam- ’ak·keh ḵap·pî ’el- kap·pî wa·hă·ni·ḥō·ṯî ḥă·mā·ṯî ’ă·nî Yah·weh dib·bar·tîWLC · 17

Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying,

𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓

דְבַר־ יְהוָ֖ה וַיְהִ֥י אֵלַ֥י לֵאמֹֽר׃ ḏə·ḇar- Yah·weh way·hî ’ê·lay lê·mōrWLC · 18

“Now you, son of man, mark out two roads for the sword of the king of Babylon to take, both starting from the same land. And make a signpost where the road branches off to each city…

𐤅𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤁𐤍 𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤊 𐤔𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤃𐤓𐤊𐤉𐤌 𐤇𐤓𐤁 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤁𐤁𐤋 𐤋𐤁𐤅𐤀 𐤔𐤍𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤉𐤑𐤀𐤅 𐤀𐤇𐤃 𐤌𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤁𐤓𐤀 𐤅𐤉𐤃 𐤃𐤓𐤊 𐤁𐤓𐤀𐤔 𐤏𐤉𐤓 𐤁𐤓𐤀

וְאַתָּ֨ה בֶן־ אָדָ֜ם שִׂים־ לְךָ֣׀ שְׁנַ֣יִם דְּרָכִ֗ים חֶ֣רֶב מֶֽלֶךְ־ בָּבֶ֔ל לָבוֹא֙ שְׁנֵיהֶ֑ם יֵצְא֣וּ אֶחָ֖ד מֵאֶ֥רֶץ בָּרֵ֔א וְיָ֣ד דֶּֽרֶךְ־ בְּרֹ֥אשׁ עִ֖יר בָּרֵֽא׃ wə·’at·tāh ḇen- ’ā·ḏām śîm- lə·ḵā šə·na·yim də·rā·ḵîm ḥe·reḇ me·leḵ- bā·ḇel lā·ḇō·w šə·nê·hem yê·ṣə·’ū ’e·ḥāḏ mê·’e·reṣ bā·rê wə·yāḏ de·reḵ- bə·rōš ‘îr bā·rêWLC · 19

Mark out one road for the sword to come against Rabbah of the Ammonites…, and [another] against Judah into fortified Jerusalem.

תָּשִׂ֔ים דֶּ֣רֶךְ חֶ֔רֶב אֵ֖ת לָב֣וֹא רַבַּ֣ת בְּנֵֽי־ עַמּ֑וֹן וְאֶת־ יְהוּדָ֥ה בְּצוּרָֽה׃ בִירוּשָׁלִַ֖ם tā·śîm de·reḵ ḥe·reḇ ’êṯ lā·ḇō·w rab·baṯ bə·nê- ‘am·mō·wn wə·’eṯ- yə·hū·ḏāh bə·ṣū·rāh ḇî·rū·šā·limWLC · 20

For the king of Babylon stands at the fork in the road, at the junction of the two roads, to seek an omen: He shakes the arrows, he consults the idols, he examines the liver.

כִּֽי־ מֶלֶךְ־ בָּבֶ֜ל עָמַ֨ד אֶל־ אֵ֣ם הַדֶּ֗רֶךְ בְּרֹ֛אשׁ שְׁנֵ֥י הַדְּרָכִ֖ים לִקְסָם־ קָ֑סֶם קִלְקַ֤ל בַּֽחִצִּים֙ שָׁאַ֣ל בַּתְּרָפִ֔ים רָאָ֖ה בַּכָּבֵֽד׃ kî- me·leḵ- bā·ḇel ‘ā·maḏ ’el- ’êm had·de·reḵ bə·rōš šə·nê had·də·rā·ḵîm liq·sām- qā·sem qil·qal ba·ḥiṣ·ṣîm šā·’al bat·tə·rā·p̄îm rā·’āh bak·kā·ḇêḏWLC · 21

In his right hand appears the portent for Jerusalem, where he is to set up battering rams, to call for… the slaughter, to lift a battle cry…, to direct the battering rams against the gates, to build a ramp, and to erect a siege wall.

בִּֽימִינ֞וֹ הָיָ֣ה׀ הַקֶּ֣סֶם יְרוּשָׁלִַ֗ם לָשׂ֤וּם כָּרִים֙ לִפְתֹּ֤חַ פֶּה֙ בְּרֶ֔צַח לְהָרִ֥ים ק֖וֹל בִּתְרוּעָ֑ה לָשׂ֤וּם כָּרִים֙ עַל־ שְׁעָרִ֔ים לִשְׁפֹּ֥ךְ סֹלְלָ֖ה לִבְנ֥וֹת דָּיֵֽק׃ bî·mî·nōw hā·yāh haq·qe·sem yə·rū·šā·lim lā·śūm kā·rîm lip̄·tō·aḥ peh bə·re·ṣaḥ lə·hā·rîm qō·wl biṯ·rū·‘āh lā·śūm kā·rîm ‘al- šə·‘ā·rîm liš·pōḵ sō·lə·lāh liḇ·nō·wṯ dā·yêqWLC · 22

It will seem like a false omen to the eyes of those who have sworn allegiance to him, but it will draw attention to their guilt and take them captive.

וְהָיָ֨ה לָהֶ֤ם שָׁוְא֙ כִּקְסוֹם בְּעֵ֣ינֵיהֶ֔ם שְׁבֻעֵ֥י שְׁבֻע֖וֹת לָהֶ֑ם וְהֽוּא־ מַזְכִּ֥יר עָוֺ֖ן לְהִתָּפֵֽשׂ׃פ wə·hā·yāh lā·hem šāw kiq·sōm bə·‘ê·nê·hem šə·ḇu·‘ê šə·ḇu·‘ō·wṯ lā·hem wə·hū- maz·kîr ‘ā·wōn lə·hit·tā·p̄êśWLC · 23

Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Because you have drawn attention to your guilt, exposing your transgressions, so that your sins are revealed in all your deeds— because you have come to remembrance— you shall be taken in hand.

לָכֵ֗ן כֹּֽה־ אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִה֒ אָמַר֮ יַ֗עַן הַזְכַּרְכֶם֙ עֲוֺ֣נְכֶ֔ם בְּהִגָּל֣וֹת פִּשְׁעֵיכֶ֗ם חַטֹּ֣אותֵיכֶ֔ם לְהֵֽרָאוֹת֙ בְּכֹ֖ל עֲלִילֽוֹתֵיכֶ֑ם יַ֚עַן הִזָּ֣כֶרְכֶ֔ם תִּתָּפֵֽשׂוּ׃פ בַּכַּ֖ף lā·ḵên kōh- ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh ’ā·mar ya·‘an haz·kar·ḵem ‘ă·wō·nə·ḵem bə·hig·gā·lō·wṯ piš·‘ê·ḵem ḥaṭ·ṭō·w·ṯê·ḵem lə·hê·rā·’ō·wṯ bə·ḵōl ‘ă·lî·lō·w·ṯê·ḵem ya·‘an hiz·zā·ḵer·ḵem tit·tā·p̄ê·śū bak·kap̄WLC · 24

And you, O profane and wicked prince of Israel, the day… has come for your final punishment…’

This is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Remove the turban, and take off the crown. Things will not remain as they are:… Exalt the lowly and bring low the exalted.

A ruin, a ruin, I will make it a ruin! And it will not be restored until the arrival of Him to whom it belongs, to whom I have assigned the right of judgment.

עַוָּ֥ה עַוָּ֖ה אֲשִׂימֶ֑נָּה עַוָּ֣ה גַּם־ זֹאת֙ לֹ֣א הָיָ֔ה עַד־ בֹּ֛א אֲשֶׁר־ ל֥וֹ וּנְתַתִּֽיו׃פ הַמִּשְׁפָּ֖ט ‘aw·wāh ‘aw·wāh ’ă·śî·men·nāh ‘aw·wāh gam- zōṯ lō hā·yāh ‘aḏ- bō ’ă·šer- lōw ū·nə·ṯat·tîw ham·miš·pāṭWLC · 27

Now prophesy, son of man, and declare that this is what the Lord GOD says concerning the Ammonites… and their contempt -: ‘A sword! A sword is drawn for slaughter, polished to consume, to flash like lightning—

וְאַתָּ֣ה הִנָּבֵ֤א בֶן־ אָדָ֗ם וְאָֽמַרְתָּ֙ כֹּ֤ה אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהֹוִ֔ה אָמַר֙ אֶל־ בְּנֵ֥י עַמּ֖וֹן וְאֶל־ חֶרְפָּתָ֑ם וְאָמַרְתָּ֗ חֶ֣רֶב חֶ֤רֶב פְּתוּחָה֙ לְטֶ֣בַח מְרוּטָ֔ה לְהָכִ֖יל לְמַ֥עַן בָּרָֽק׃ wə·’at·tāh hin·nā·ḇê ḇen- ’ā·ḏām wə·’ā·mar·tā kōh ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh ’ā·mar ’el- bə·nê ‘am·mō·wn wə·’el- ḥer·pā·ṯām wə·’ā·mar·tā ḥe·reḇ ḥe·reḇ pə·ṯū·ḥāh lə·ṭe·ḇaḥ mə·rū·ṭāh lə·hā·ḵîl lə·ma·‘an bā·rāqWLC · 28

while they offer false visions for you and lying divinations about you— to be placed on the necks of the wicked who are slain, whose day has come, the time of their final punishment…

שָׁ֔וְא בַּחֲז֥וֹת לָךְ֙ כָּזָ֑ב בִּקְסָם־ לָ֖ךְ לָתֵ֣ת אוֹתָ֗ךְ אֶֽל־ צַוְּארֵי֙ רְשָׁעִ֔ים חַֽלְלֵ֣י אֲשֶׁר־ יוֹמָ֔ם בָּ֣א בְּעֵ֖ת עֲוֺ֥ן קֵֽץ׃ šāw ba·ḥă·zō·wṯ lāḵ kā·zāḇ biq·sām- lāḵ lā·ṯêṯ ’ō·w·ṯāḵ ’el- ṣaw·wə·rê rə·šā·‘îm ḥal·lê ’ă·šer- yō·w·mām bā bə·‘êṯ ‘ă·wōn qêṣWLC · 29

Return [the sword] to its sheath! In the place where you were created, in the land of your origin, I will judge you.

הָשַׁ֖ב אֶל־ תַּעְרָ֑הּ בִּמְק֧וֹם אֲשֶׁר־ נִבְרֵ֛את בְּאֶ֥רֶץ מְכֻרוֹתַ֖יִךְ אֶשְׁפֹּ֥ט אֹתָֽךְ׃ hā·šaḇ ’el- ta‘·rāh bim·qō·wm ’ă·šer- niḇ·rêṯ bə·’e·reṣ mə·ḵu·rō·w·ṯa·yiḵ ’eš·pōṭ ’ō·ṯāḵWLC · 30

I will pour out My anger upon you; I will breathe the fire of My fury against you; I will hand you over to… brutal men, skilled in destruction.

וְשָׁפַכְתִּ֤י זַעְמִ֔י עָלַ֙יִךְ֙ אָפִ֣יחַ בְּאֵ֥שׁ עֶבְרָתִ֖י עָלָ֑יִךְ וּנְתַתִּ֗יךְ בְּיַד֙ בֹּֽעֲרִ֔ים אֲנָשִׁ֣ים חָרָשֵׁ֖י מַשְׁחִֽית׃ wə·šā·p̄aḵ·tî za‘·mî ‘ā·la·yiḵ ’ā·p̄î·aḥ bə·’êš ‘eḇ·rā·ṯî ‘ā·lā·yiḵ ū·nə·ṯat·tîḵ bə·yaḏ bō·‘ă·rîm ’ă·nā·šîm ḥā·rā·šê maš·ḥîṯWLC · 31

You will be fuel for the fire. Your blood will stain your own land. You will not be remembered, for I, the LORD, have spoken.’”
