The Two Adulterous Sisters

Again the word of the LORD came to me, saying,

“Son of man, there were two women, daughters of the same mother,
𐤁𐤍 𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤄𐤉𐤅 𐤔𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤍𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤍𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤇𐤕 𐤀𐤌
בֶּן־ אָדָ֑ם הָיֽוּ׃ שְׁתַּ֣יִם נָשִׁ֔ים בְּנ֥וֹת אַחַ֖ת אֵם־ ben- ’ā·ḏām hā·yū šə·ta·yim nā·šîm bə·nō·wṯ ’a·ḥaṯ ’êm- — WLC · 2

and they played in Egypt, prostituting themselves from their youth. Their breasts… were fondled there, and their virgin bosoms caressed.

וַתִּזְנֶ֣ינָה בְמִצְרַ֔יִם זָנ֑וּ בִּנְעוּרֵיהֶ֖ן שְׁדֵיהֶ֔ן וְשָׁ֣ם מֹעֲכ֣וּ שָׁ֚מָּה בְּתוּלֵיהֶֽן׃ דַּדֵּ֖י עִשּׂ֔וּ wat·tiz·ne·nāh ḇə·miṣ·ra·yim zā·nū bin·‘ū·rê·hen šə·ḏê·hen wə·šām mō·‘ă·ḵū šām·māh bə·ṯū·lê·hen dad·dê ‘iś·śū — WLC · 3

The older was named Oholah, and her sister [was named] Oholibah. They became Mine and gave birth to sons and daughters. [As] [for] their identities, Oholah [is] Samaria, and Oholibah is Jerusalem.

Oholah prostituted herself while she was still Mine. She lusted after her lovers,… the Assyrians— warriors

אָהֳלָ֖ה וַתִּ֥זֶן תַּחְתָּ֑י וַתַּעְגַּב֙ עַֽל־ מְאַהֲבֶ֔יהָ אֶל־ אַשּׁ֖וּר קְרוֹבִֽים׃ ’ā·ho·lāh wat·ti·zen taḥ·tāy wat·ta‘·gaḇ ‘al- mə·’a·hă·ḇe·hā ’el- ’aš·šūr qə·rō·w·ḇîm — WLC · 5

clothed in blue, governors and commanders, all desirable young men, horsemen mounted on steeds.

לְבֻשֵׁ֤י תְכֵ֙לֶת֙ פַּח֣וֹת וּסְגָנִ֔ים כֻּלָּ֑ם חֶ֖מֶד בַּח֥וּרֵי פָּרָשִׁ֕ים רֹכְבֵ֖י סוּסִֽים׃ lə·ḇu·šê ṯə·ḵê·leṯ pa·ḥō·wṯ ū·sə·ḡā·nîm kul·lām ḥe·meḏ ba·ḥū·rê pā·rā·šîm rō·ḵə·ḇê sū·sîm — WLC · 6

She offered sexual favors vvv to all the elite… of Assyria. She defiled herself with all… the idols of those for whom she lusted.

וַתִּתֵּ֤ן תַּזְנוּתֶ֙יהָ֙ עֲלֵיהֶ֔ם כֻּלָּ֑ם מִבְחַ֥ר בְּנֵֽי־ אַשּׁ֖וּר נִטְמָֽאָה׃ וּבְכֹ֧ל בְּכָל־ גִּלּוּלֵיהֶ֖ם אֲשֶׁר־ עָֽגְבָ֛ה wat·tit·tên taz·nū·ṯe·hā ‘ă·lê·hem kul·lām miḇ·ḥar bə·nê- ’aš·šūr niṭ·mā·’āh ū·ḇə·ḵōl bə·ḵāl gil·lū·lê·hem ’ă·šer- ‘ā·ḡə·ḇāh — WLC · 7

- She did not give up the prostitution [she began] in Egypt, when men slept with her in her youth,… caressed her virgin bosom, and poured out their lust upon her.

וְאֶת־ לֹ֣א עָזָ֔בָה תַּזְנוּתֶ֤יהָ מִמִּצְרַ֙יִם֙ כִּ֤י שָׁכְב֣וּ אוֹתָהּ֙ בִנְעוּרֶ֔יהָ וְהֵ֥מָּה עִשּׂ֖וּ בְתוּלֶ֑יהָ דַּדֵּ֣י וַיִּשְׁפְּכ֥וּ תַזְנוּתָ֖ם עָלֶֽיהָ׃ wə·’eṯ- lō ‘ā·zā·ḇāh taz·nū·ṯe·hā mim·miṣ·ra·yim kî šā·ḵə·ḇū ’ō·w·ṯāh ḇin·‘ū·re·hā wə·hêm·māh ‘iś·śū ḇə·ṯū·le·hā dad·dê way·yiš·pə·ḵū ṯaz·nū·ṯām ‘ā·le·hā — WLC · 8

Therefore I delivered her into the hands of her lovers,… the Assyrians… for whom she lusted

לָכֵ֥ן נְתַתִּ֖יהָ בְּיַד־ מְאַֽהֲבֶ֑יהָ בְּיַד֙ בְּנֵ֣י אַשּׁ֔וּר אֲשֶׁ֥ר עָגְבָ֖ה עֲלֵיהֶֽם׃ lā·ḵên nə·ṯat·tî·hā bə·yaḏ- mə·’a·hă·ḇe·hā bə·yaḏ bə·nê ’aš·šūr ’ă·šer ‘ā·ḡə·ḇāh ‘ă·lê·hem — WLC · 9

They exposed her nakedness, seized her sons and daughters, and put her to the sword. Thus she became a byword among women, and they executed judgment against her.

הֵמָּה֮ גִּלּ֣וּ עֶרְוָתָהּ֒ לָקָ֔חוּ וְאוֹתָ֖הּ בָּנֶ֤יהָ וּבְנוֹתֶ֙יהָ֙ הָרָ֑גוּ בַּחֶ֣רֶב וַתְּהִי־ שֵׁם֙ לַנָּשִׁ֔ים עָ֥שׂוּ וּשְׁפוּטִ֖ים בָֽהּ׃ס hêm·māh gil·lū ‘er·wā·ṯāh lā·qā·ḥū wə·’ō·w·ṯāh bā·ne·hā ū·ḇə·nō·w·ṯe·hā hā·rā·ḡū ba·ḥe·reḇ wat·tə·hî- šêm lan·nā·šîm ‘ā·śū ū·šə·p̄ū·ṭîm ḇāh — WLC · 10

Her sister Oholibah saw [this], yet in her lust and prostitution… she was more depraved than her sister.

אֲחוֹתָ֣הּ אָהֳלִיבָ֔ה וַתֵּ֙רֶא֙ עַגְבָתָ֖הּ מִמֶּ֑נָּה וְאֶת־ תַּ֨זְנוּתֶ֔יהָ מִזְּנוּנֵ֖י וַתַּשְׁחֵ֥ת אֲחוֹתָֽהּ׃ ’ă·ḥō·w·ṯāh ’ā·ho·lî·ḇāh wat·tê·re ‘aḡ·ḇā·ṯāh mim·men·nāh wə·’eṯ- taz·nū·ṯe·hā miz·zə·nū·nê wat·taš·ḥêṯ ’ă·ḥō·w·ṯāh — WLC · 11

She too lusted after the Assyrians…— governors and commanders, warriors dressed in splendor, horsemen riding on steeds, all desirable young men.
𐤏𐤂𐤁𐤄 𐤀𐤋 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤔𐤅𐤓 𐤐𐤇𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤎𐤂𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤒𐤓𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤁𐤔𐤉 𐤌𐤊𐤋𐤅𐤋 𐤐𐤓𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤓𐤊𐤁𐤉 𐤎𐤅𐤎𐤉𐤌 𐤊𐤋𐤌 𐤇𐤌𐤃 𐤁𐤇𐤅𐤓𐤉
עָגָ֜בָה אֶל־ בְּנֵי֩ אַשּׁ֨וּר פַּח֨וֹת וּסְגָנִ֤ים קְרֹבִים֙ לְבֻשֵׁ֣י מִכְל֔וֹל פָּרָשִׁ֖ים רֹכְבֵ֣י סוּסִ֑ים כֻּלָּֽם׃ חֶ֖מֶד בַּח֥וּרֵי ‘ā·ḡā·ḇāh ’el- bə·nê ’aš·šūr pa·ḥō·wṯ ū·sə·ḡā·nîm qə·rō·ḇîm lə·ḇu·šê miḵ·lō·wl pā·rā·šîm rō·ḵə·ḇê sū·sîm kul·lām ḥe·meḏ ba·ḥū·rê — WLC · 12

And I saw that she too had defiled herself; both of them had taken the same path.
𐤅𐤀𐤓𐤀 𐤊𐤉 𐤍𐤈𐤌𐤀𐤄 𐤋𐤔𐤕𐤉𐤄𐤍 𐤀𐤇𐤃 𐤃𐤓𐤊
וָאֵ֖רֶא כִּ֣י נִטְמָ֑אָה לִשְׁתֵּיהֶֽן׃ אֶחָ֖ד דֶּ֥רֶךְ wā·’ê·re kî niṭ·mā·’āh liš·tê·hen ’e·ḥāḏ de·reḵ — WLC · 13

But [Oholibah] carried… her prostitution {even further}. She saw the men portrayed on the wall, images of the Chaldeans, engraved in vermilion,
𐤅𐤕𐤅𐤎𐤐 𐤀𐤋 𐤕𐤆𐤍𐤅𐤕𐤉𐤄 𐤅𐤕𐤓𐤀 𐤀𐤍𐤔𐤉 𐤌𐤇𐤒𐤄 𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤒𐤉𐤓 𐤑𐤋𐤌𐤉 𐤊𐤔𐤃𐤉𐤉𐤌 𐤇𐤒𐤒𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤔𐤔𐤓
וַתּ֖וֹסֶף אֶל־ תַּזְנוּתֶ֑יהָ וַתֵּ֗רֶא אַנְשֵׁי֙ מְחֻקֶּ֣ה עַל־ הַקִּ֔יר צַלְמֵ֣י כַשְׂדִּיִּים חֲקֻקִ֖ים בַּשָּׁשַֽׁר׃ wat·tō·w·sep̄ ’el- taz·nū·ṯe·hā wat·tê·re ’an·šê mə·ḥuq·qeh ‘al- haq·qîr ṣal·mê ḵaś·dī·yīm ḥă·qu·qîm baš·šā·šar — WLC · 14

wearing belts on their waists and flowing turbans on their heads; all of them looked like officers of the Babylonians… in Chaldea, the land of their birth.

חֲגוֹרֵ֨י אֵז֜וֹר בְּמָתְנֵיהֶ֗ם סְרוּחֵ֤י טְבוּלִים֙ בְּרָ֣אשֵׁיהֶ֔ם כֻּלָּ֑ם מַרְאֵ֥ה שָׁלִשִׁ֖ים דְּמ֤וּת בְּנֵֽי־ בָבֶל֙ כַּשְׂדִּ֔ים אֶ֖רֶץ מוֹלַדְתָּֽם׃ ḥă·ḡō·w·rê ’ê·zō·wr bə·mā·ṯə·nê·hem sə·rū·ḥê ṭə·ḇū·lîm bə·rā·šê·hem kul·lām mar·’êh šā·li·šîm də·mūṯ bə·nê- ḇā·ḇel kaś·dîm ’e·reṣ mō·w·laḏ·tām — WLC · 15

At the sight of them…, she lusted for them and sent messengers to them in Chaldea.

לְמַרְאֵ֣ה עֵינֶ֑יהָ וַתַּעְגַּב עֲלֵיהֶ֖ם וַתִּשְׁלַ֧ח מַלְאָכִ֛ים אֲלֵיהֶ֖ם כַּשְׂדִּֽימָה׃ lə·mar·’êh ‘ê·ne·hā wat·taʿ·gaḇ ‘ă·lê·hem wat·tiš·laḥ mal·’ā·ḵîm ’ă·lê·hem kaś·dî·māh — WLC · 16

Then the Babylonians… came to her, to the bed of love, and in their lust they defiled her. But after she had been defiled by them, she turned away in disgust.

בְנֵֽי־ בָבֶל֙ וַיָּבֹ֨אוּ אֵלֶ֤יהָ לְמִשְׁכַּ֣ב דֹּדִ֔ים בְּתַזְנוּתָ֑ם וַיְטַמְּא֥וּ אוֹתָ֖הּ וַתִּ֨טְמָא־ בָ֔ם נַפְשָׁ֖הּ מֵהֶֽם׃ וַתֵּ֥קַע ḇə·nê- ḇā·ḇel way·yā·ḇō·’ū ’ê·le·hā lə·miš·kaḇ dō·ḏîm bə·ṯaz·nū·ṯām way·ṭam·mə·’ū ’ō·w·ṯāh wat·tiṭ·mā- ḇām nap̄·šāh mê·hem wat·tê·qa‘ — WLC · 17

When [Oholibah] openly prostituted herself and exposed her nakedness, I turned away from her in disgust, just as I had turned away from her sister.

וַתְּגַל֙ תַּזְנוּתֶ֔יהָ וַתְּגַ֖ל אֶת־ עֶרְוָתָ֑הּ נַפְשִׁי֙ מֵֽעָלֶ֔יהָ וַתֵּ֤קַע כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר נַפְשִׁ֖י נָקְעָ֥ה מֵעַ֥ל אֲחוֹתָֽהּ׃ wat·tə·ḡal taz·nū·ṯe·hā wat·tə·ḡal ’eṯ- ‘er·wā·ṯāh nap̄·šî mê·‘ā·le·hā wat·tê·qa‘ ka·’ă·šer nap̄·šî nā·qə·‘āh mê·‘al ’ă·ḥō·w·ṯāh — WLC · 18

Yet she multiplied her promiscuity, remembering the days of her youth, when she had prostituted herself in the land of Egypt

וַתַּרְבֶּ֖ה אֶת־ תַּזְנוּתֶ֑יהָ לִזְכֹּר֙ אֶת־ יְמֵ֣י נְעוּרֶ֔יהָ אֲשֶׁ֥ר זָנְתָ֖ה בְּאֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרָֽיִם׃ wat·tar·beh ’eṯ- taz·nū·ṯe·hā liz·kōr ’eṯ- yə·mê nə·‘ū·re·hā ’ă·šer zā·nə·ṯāh bə·’e·reṣ miṣ·rā·yim — WLC · 19

and lusted after their lovers, whose genitals were like those of donkeys and whose emission was like that of stallions.

Therefore, Oholibah, this is what the Lord GOD… says: ‘I will incite your lovers against you, those from whom… you turned away in disgust. And I will bring them against you from every side—

They will come against you with a host of peoples, with weapons, chariots, and wagons. They will array themselves against you on every side with buckler and shield and helmet. I will delegate judgment to them, and they will punish you according to their own standards.

They will treat… you with hatred, take all for which you have worked, and leave you naked and bare, so that the shame of your prostitution will be exposed. Your indecency and promiscuity

For they have committed adultery, and blood is on their hands… They have committed adultery with their idols. They have even {sacrificed} their children, whom they bore to Me, in the fire as food for their idols.

On the very day they slaughtered their children for their idols, they entered… My sanctuary to profane it. Yes, they did this inside My house.

accompanied by the sound of a carefree crowd. Drunkards were brought in from the desert along with men from the rabble…, who put bracelets on your wrists and beautiful crowns on your head.

Then I said of [her] [who] [had] [grown] old in adulteries: ‘Now let them use her as a prostitute…, for that is all she is!’

But righteous… men will sentence them to the punishment of those who commit adultery and bloodshed…, because they are adulteresses with blood on their hands.

- This is what the Lord GOD… says: ‘Bring a mob against them and consign them to terror and plunder.

The mob will stone them and cut them down with their swords. They will kill their sons and daughters and burn down their houses -.

So I will put an end to indecency in the land, and all the women will be admonished not to imitate your behavior.
