Chapter 29
A Prophecy against Pharaoh
1
In the tenth year, on the twelfth… day of the tenth [month], the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
𐤄𐤏𐤔𐤉𐤓𐤉𐤕 𐤁𐤔𐤍𐤄 𐤁𐤔𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤔𐤓 𐤋𐤇𐤃𐤔 𐤁𐤏𐤔𐤓𐤉 𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓
הָעֲשִׂירִ֔ית בַּשָּׁנָה֙ בִּשְׁנֵ֥ים עָשָׂ֖ר לַחֹ֑דֶשׁ בָּעֲשִׂרִ֕י דְבַר־ יְהוָ֖ה הָיָ֥ה אֵלַ֥י לֵאמֹֽר׃ hā·‘ă·śî·rîṯ baš·šā·nāh biš·nêm ‘ā·śār la·ḥō·ḏeš bā·‘ă·śi·rî ḏə·ḇar- Yah·weh hā·yāh ’ê·lay lê·mōr — WLC · 1

“Son of man, set your face against Pharaoh king of Egypt and prophesy against him and against all Egypt.
𐤁𐤍 𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤊 𐤏𐤋 𐤐𐤓𐤏𐤄 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤁𐤀 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤏𐤋 𐤊𐤋𐤄 𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌
בֶּן־ אָדָ֕ם שִׂ֣ים פָּנֶ֔יךָ עַל־ פַּרְעֹ֖ה מֶ֣לֶךְ מִצְרָ֑יִם וְהִנָּבֵ֣א עָלָ֔יו וְעַל־ כֻּלָּֽהּ׃ מִצְרַ֖יִם ben- ’ā·ḏām śîm pā·ne·ḵā ‘al- par·‘ōh me·leḵ miṣ·rā·yim wə·hin·nā·ḇê ‘ā·lāw wə·‘al- kul·lāh miṣ·ra·yim — WLC · 2

Speak to him and tell him that this is what the Lord GOD says: Behold, I am against you, O Pharaoh king of Egypt, O great monster who lies among his rivers, who says ‘The Nile is mine; I made it myself.’

דַּבֵּ֨ר וְאָמַרְתָּ֜ כֹּֽה־ אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֗ה אָמַ֣ר׀ הִנְנִ֤י עָלֶ֙יךָ֙ פַּרְעֹ֣ה מֶֽלֶךְ־ מִצְרַ֔יִם הַגָּד֔וֹל הַתַּנִּים֙ הָרֹבֵ֖ץ בְּת֣וֹךְ יְאֹרָ֑יו אֲשֶׁ֥ר אָמַ֛ר לִ֥י יְאֹרִ֖י וַאֲנִ֥י עֲשִׂיתִֽנִי׃ dab·bêr wə·’ā·mar·tā kōh- ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh ’ā·mar hin·nî ‘ā·le·ḵā par·‘ōh me·leḵ- miṣ·ra·yim hag·gā·ḏō·wl hat·tan·nîm hā·rō·ḇêṣ bə·ṯō·wḵ yə·’ō·rāw ’ă·šer ’ā·mar lî yə·’ō·rî wa·’ă·nî ‘ă·śî·ṯi·nî — WLC · 3

But I will put hooks in your jaws and cause the fish of your streams to cling to your scales. I will haul you up out of your rivers, and all the fish of your streams will cling to your scales.

וְנָתַתִּ֤י חַחִיִּים בִּלְחָיֶ֔יךָ וְהִדְבַּקְתִּ֥י דְגַת־ יְאֹרֶ֖יךָ בְּקַשְׂקְשֹׂתֶ֑יךָ וְהַעֲלִיתִ֙יךָ֙ מִתּ֣וֹךְ יְאֹרֶ֔יךָ וְאֵת֙ כָּל־ דְּגַ֣ת יְאֹרֶ֔יךָ תִּדְבָּֽק׃ בְּקַשְׂקְשֹׂתֶ֖יךָ wə·nā·ṯat·tî ḥa·ḥī·yīm bil·ḥā·ye·ḵā wə·hiḏ·baq·tî ḏə·ḡaṯ- yə·’ō·re·ḵā bə·qaś·qə·śō·ṯe·ḵā wə·ha·‘ă·lî·ṯî·ḵā mit·tō·wḵ yə·’ō·re·ḵā wə·’êṯ kāl- də·ḡaṯ yə·’ō·re·ḵā tiḏ·bāq bə·qaś·qə·śō·ṯe·ḵā — WLC · 4

I will leave you in the desert, you and all the fish of your streams. You will fall on the open field and will not be taken away… or gathered for burial. I have given you as food to the beasts of the earth and the birds of the air.

וּנְטַשְׁתִּ֣יךָ הַמִּדְבָּ֗רָה אוֹתְךָ֙ וְאֵת֙ כָּל־ דְּגַ֣ת יְאֹרֶ֔יךָ תִּפּ֔וֹל עַל־ פְּנֵ֤י הַשָּׂדֶה֙ לֹ֥א תֵאָסֵ֖ף וְלֹ֣א תִקָּבֵ֑ץ נְתַתִּ֥יךָ לְאָכְלָֽה׃ לְחַיַּ֥ת הָאָ֛רֶץ וּלְע֥וֹף הַשָּׁמַ֖יִם ū·nə·ṭaš·tî·ḵā ham·miḏ·bā·rāh ’ō·wṯ·ḵā wə·’êṯ kāl- də·ḡaṯ yə·’ō·re·ḵā tip·pō·wl ‘al- pə·nê haś·śā·ḏeh lō ṯê·’ā·sêp̄ wə·lō ṯiq·qā·ḇêṣ nə·ṯat·tî·ḵā lə·’āḵ·lāh lə·ḥay·yaṯ hā·’ā·reṣ ū·lə·‘ō·wp̄ haš·šā·ma·yim — WLC · 5

Then all the people of Egypt will know that I am the LORD. For you were only a staff of reeds to the house of Israel.
𐤊𐤋 𐤉𐤔𐤁𐤉 𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤃𐤏𐤅 𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤉𐤏𐤍 𐤄𐤉𐤅𐤕𐤌 𐤌𐤔𐤏𐤍𐤕 𐤒𐤍𐤄 𐤋𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋
כָּל־ יֹשְׁבֵ֣י מִצְרַ֔יִם וְיָֽדְעוּ֙ כִּ֖י אֲנִ֣י יְהוָ֑ה יַ֧עַן הֱיוֹתָ֛ם מִשְׁעֶ֥נֶת קָנֶ֖ה לְבֵ֥ית יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ kāl- yō·šə·ḇê miṣ·ra·yim wə·yā·ḏə·‘ū kî ’ă·nî Yah·weh ya·‘an hĕ·yō·w·ṯām miš·‘e·neṯ qā·neh lə·ḇêṯ yiś·rā·’êl — WLC · 6

When Israel took hold of you with their hands, you splintered, tearing all their shoulders; when they leaned on you, you broke, and their backs were wrenched -

בְּתָפְשָׂ֨ם בְּךָ֤ בַכַּפְךָ תֵּר֔וֹץ וּבָקַעְתָּ֥ כָּל־ לָהֶ֖ם כָּתֵ֑ף וּבְהִֽשָּׁעֲנָ֤ם עָלֶ֙יךָ֙ תִּשָּׁבֵ֔ר מָתְנָֽיִם׃ס וְהַעֲמַדְתָּ֥ כָּל־ לָהֶ֖ם bə·ṯā·p̄ə·śām bə·ḵā ḇak·kap̄·ḵå̄ tê·rō·wṣ ū·ḇā·qa‘·tā kāl- lā·hem kā·ṯêp̄ ū·ḇə·hiš·šā·‘ă·nām ‘ā·le·ḵā tiš·šā·ḇêr mā·ṯə·nā·yim wə·ha·‘ă·maḏ·tā kāl- lā·hem — WLC · 7
The Desolation of Egypt

Therefore this is what the Lord GOD… says: I will bring a sword against you and cut off from you man and beast.
𐤋𐤊𐤍 𐤊𐤄 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤄𐤍𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤌𐤁𐤉𐤀 𐤇𐤓𐤁 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤊 𐤅𐤄𐤊𐤓𐤕𐤉 𐤌𐤌𐤊 𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤅𐤁𐤄𐤌𐤄
לָכֵ֗ן כֹּ֤ה אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֔ה הִנְנִ֛י אָמַר֙ מֵבִ֥יא חָ֑רֶב עָלַ֖יִךְ וְהִכְרַתִּ֥י מִמֵּ֖ךְ אָדָ֥ם וּבְהֵמָֽה׃ lā·ḵên kōh ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh hin·nî ’ā·mar mê·ḇî ḥā·reḇ ‘ā·la·yiḵ wə·hiḵ·rat·tî mim·mêḵ ’ā·ḏām ū·ḇə·hê·māh — WLC · 8

The land of Egypt will become a desolate wasteland. Then they will know that I am the LORD. Because you said, ‘The Nile [is] mine; I made it,’
𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤕𐤄 𐤋𐤔𐤌𐤌𐤄 𐤅𐤇𐤓𐤁𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤃𐤏𐤅 𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤉𐤏𐤍 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤉𐤀𐤓 𐤋𐤉 𐤅𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤏𐤔𐤉𐤕𐤉
אֶֽרֶץ־ מִצְרַ֙יִם֙ וְהָיְתָ֤ה לִשְׁמָמָ֣ה וְחָרְבָּ֔ה וְיָדְע֖וּ כִּֽי־ אֲנִ֣י יְהוָ֑ה יַ֧עַן אָמַ֛ר יְאֹ֥ר לִ֖י וַאֲנִ֥י עָשִֽׂיתִי׃ ’e·reṣ- miṣ·ra·yim wə·hā·yə·ṯāh liš·mā·māh wə·ḥā·rə·bāh wə·yā·ḏə·‘ū kî- ’ă·nî Yah·weh ya·‘an ’ā·mar yə·’ōr lî wa·’ă·nî ‘ā·śî·ṯî — WLC · 9

therefore I am against you and against your rivers. I will turn the land of Egypt into a ruin, a desolate wasteland from Migdol to Syene, and as far as the border of Cush.
𐤋𐤊𐤍 𐤄𐤍𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤊 𐤅𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤀𐤓𐤉𐤊 𐤅𐤍𐤕𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤇𐤓𐤁𐤅𐤕 𐤔𐤌𐤌𐤄 𐤇𐤓𐤁 𐤌𐤌𐤂𐤃𐤋 𐤎𐤅𐤍𐤄 𐤅𐤏𐤃 𐤂𐤁𐤅𐤋 𐤊𐤅𐤔
לָכֵ֛ן הִנְנִ֥י אֵלֶ֖יךָ וְאֶל־ יְאֹרֶ֑יךָ וְנָתַתִּ֞י אֶת־ אֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרַ֗יִם לְחָרְבוֹת֙ שְׁמָמָ֔ה חֹ֣רֶב מִמִּגְדֹּ֥ל סְוֵנֵ֖ה וְעַד־ גְּב֥וּל כּֽוּשׁ׃ lā·ḵên hin·nî ’ê·le·ḵā wə·’el- yə·’ō·re·ḵā wə·nā·ṯat·tî ’eṯ- ’e·reṣ miṣ·ra·yim lə·ḥā·rə·ḇō·wṯ šə·mā·māh ḥō·reḇ mim·miḡ·dōl sə·wê·nêh wə·‘aḏ- gə·ḇūl kūš — WLC · 10

No foot of man [or] beast will pass through, - and it will be uninhabited for forty years.

לֹ֤א רֶ֣גֶל אָדָ֔ם לֹ֣א בְּהֵמָ֖ה תַעֲבָר־ בָּהּ֙ וְרֶ֥גֶל תַעֲבָר־ בָּ֑הּ וְלֹ֥א תֵשֵׁ֖ב אַרְבָּעִ֥ים שָׁנָֽה׃ lō re·ḡel ’ā·ḏām lō bə·hê·māh ṯa·‘ă·ḇār- bāh wə·re·ḡel ṯa·‘ă·ḇār- bāh wə·lō ṯê·šêḇ ’ar·bā·‘îm šā·nāh — WLC · 11

I will make the land of Egypt a desolation among desolate lands, and her cities will lie desolate for forty years among the ruined cities. And I will disperse the Egyptians among the nations and scatter them throughout the countries.

וְנָתַתִּ֣י אֶת־ אֶרֶץ֩ מִצְרַ֨יִם שְׁמָמָ֜ה בְּת֣וֹךְ׀ נְשַׁמּ֗וֹת אֲרָצ֣וֹת וְעָרֶ֙יהָ֙ תִּֽהְיֶ֣יןָ שְׁמָמָ֔ה אַרְבָּעִ֖ים שָׁנָ֑ה בְּת֨וֹךְ מָֽחֳרָבוֹת֙ עָרִ֤ים וַהֲפִצֹתִ֤י אֶת־ מִצְרַ֙יִם֙ בַּגּוֹיִ֔ם וְֽזֵרִיתִ֖ים בָּאֲרָצֽוֹת׃פ wə·nā·ṯat·tî ’eṯ- ’e·reṣ miṣ·ra·yim šə·mā·māh bə·ṯō·wḵ nə·šam·mō·wṯ ’ă·rā·ṣō·wṯ wə·‘ā·re·hā tih·ye·nā šə·mā·māh ’ar·bā·‘îm šā·nāh bə·ṯō·wḵ mā·ḥo·rā·ḇō·wṯ ‘ā·rîm wa·hă·p̄i·ṣō·ṯî ’eṯ- miṣ·ra·yim bag·gō·w·yim wə·zê·rî·ṯîm bā·’ă·rā·ṣō·wṯ — WLC · 12

For this is what the Lord GOD says: At the end of forty years I will gather the Egyptians from the nations to which they were scattered…
𐤊𐤉 𐤊𐤄 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤌𐤒𐤑 𐤀𐤓𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤌 𐤔𐤍𐤄 𐤀𐤒𐤁𐤑 𐤀𐤕 𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤏𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤍𐤐𐤑𐤅 𐤔𐤌𐤄
כִּ֛י כֹּ֥ה אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֑ה אָמַ֖ר מִקֵּ֞ץ אַרְבָּעִ֤ים שָׁנָה֙ אֲקַבֵּ֣ץ אֶת־ מִצְרַ֔יִם מִן־ הָעַמִּ֖ים אֲשֶׁר־ נָפֹ֥צוּ שָֽׁמָּה׃ kî kōh ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh ’ā·mar miq·qêṣ ’ar·bā·‘îm šā·nāh ’ă·qab·bêṣ ’eṯ- miṣ·ra·yim min- hā·‘am·mîm ’ă·šer- nā·p̄ō·ṣū šām·māh — WLC · 13

I will restore Egypt from captivity and bring them back to the land of Pathros, the land of their origin. There they will be a lowly kingdom.
𐤅𐤔𐤁𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤕 𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤔𐤁𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤄𐤔𐤁𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤏𐤋 𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤐𐤕𐤓𐤅𐤎 𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤌𐤊𐤅𐤓𐤕𐤌 𐤔𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤅 𐤔𐤐𐤋𐤄 𐤌𐤌𐤋𐤊𐤄
וְשַׁבְתִּי֙ אֶת־ מִצְרַ֔יִם שְׁב֣וּת וַהֲשִׁבֹתִ֤י אֹתָם֙ עַל־ אֶ֣רֶץ פַּתְר֔וֹס אֶ֖רֶץ מְכֽוּרָתָ֑ם שָׁ֖ם וְהָ֥יוּ שְׁפָלָֽה׃ מַמְלָכָ֥ה wə·šaḇ·tî ’eṯ- miṣ·ra·yim šə·ḇūṯ wa·hă·ši·ḇō·ṯî ’ō·ṯām ‘al- ’e·reṣ paṯ·rō·ws ’e·reṣ mə·ḵū·rā·ṯām šām wə·hā·yū šə·p̄ā·lāh mam·lā·ḵāh — WLC · 14

- Egypt will be the lowliest of kingdoms and will never again exalt itself above the nations. For I will diminish [Egypt] so that it will never again rule over the nations.
𐤌𐤍 𐤕𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤔𐤐𐤋𐤄 𐤄𐤌𐤌𐤋𐤊𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤏𐤅𐤃 𐤕𐤕𐤍𐤔𐤀 𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤂𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤌𐤏𐤈𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤁𐤋𐤕𐤉 𐤓𐤃𐤅𐤕 𐤁𐤂𐤅𐤉𐤌
מִן־ תִּהְיֶ֣ה שְׁפָלָ֔ה הַמַּמְלָכוֹת֙ וְלֹֽא־ ע֖וֹד תִתְנַשֵּׂ֥א עַל־ הַגּוֹיִ֑ם וְהִ֨מְעַטְתִּ֔ים לְבִלְתִּ֖י רְד֥וֹת בַּגּוֹיִֽם׃ min- tih·yeh šə·p̄ā·lāh ham·mam·lā·ḵō·wṯ wə·lō- ‘ō·wḏ ṯiṯ·naś·śê ‘al- hag·gō·w·yim wə·him·‘aṭ·tîm lə·ḇil·tî rə·ḏō·wṯ bag·gō·w·yim — WLC · 15

Egypt will never… again be an object of trust for the house of Israel, but will remind them of [their] iniquity in turning to the Egyptians. Then they will know that I am the Lord GOD.”

In the twenty-seventh… year, on the first day of the first month, the word of the LORD came to me, saying,

“Son of man, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon caused his army to labor strenuously… against Tyre. Every head was made bald and every shoulder made raw. But he and his army received no wages from Tyre for the labor they expended on it.

Therefore this is what the Lord GOD… says: I will give the land of Egypt to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, who will carry off its wealth, seize its spoil, and remove its plunder. This will be the wages for his army.

I have given him the land of Egypt as the reward for his labor, because it was done for Me, declares the Lord GOD.

In that day I will cause a horn to sprout for the house of Israel, and I will open your mouth to speak among them. Then they will know that I am the LORD.”
