Chapter 3

Ezekiel Eats the Scroll

1

“Son of man,” He said to me, “eat what you find here. Eat this scroll, then go and speak to the house of Israel.”

𐤁𐤍 𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤊𐤅𐤋 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤕𐤌𐤑𐤀 𐤀𐤊𐤅𐤋 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤌𐤂𐤋𐤄 𐤅𐤋𐤊 𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋

בֶּן־ אָדָ֕ם וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלַ֔י אֵ֥ת אֱכ֑וֹל אֲשֶׁר־ תִּמְצָ֖א אֱכוֹל֙ אֶת־ הַזֹּ֔את הַמְּגִלָּ֣ה וְלֵ֥ךְ דַּבֵּ֖ר אֶל־ בֵּ֥ית יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ ben- ’ā·ḏām way·yō·mer ’ê·lay ’êṯ ’ĕ·ḵō·wl ’ă·šer- tim·ṣā ’ĕ·ḵō·wl ’eṯ- haz·zōṯ ham·mə·ḡil·lāh wə·lêḵ dab·bêr ’el- bêṯ yiś·rā·’êlWLC · 1

So I opened my mouth, and He fed me the scroll…

𐤅𐤀𐤐𐤕𐤇 𐤀𐤕 𐤐𐤉 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤊𐤋𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤌𐤂𐤋𐤄 𐤄𐤆𐤀𐤕

וָאֶפְתַּ֖ח אֶת־ פִּ֑י וַיַּ֣אֲכִלֵ֔נִי אֵ֖ת הַמְּגִלָּ֥ה הַזֹּֽאת׃ wā·’ep̄·taḥ ’eṯ- pî way·ya·’ă·ḵi·lê·nî ’êṯ ham·mə·ḡil·lāh haz·zōṯWLC · 2

“Son of man,”… He said to me, “eat and fill your stomach with this scroll I am giving you.”… So I ate, and it was as sweet as honey in my mouth.

בֶּן־ אָדָם֙ בִּטְנְךָ֤ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלַ֗י תַֽאֲכֵל֙ תְמַלֵּ֔א אֵ֚ת וּמֵעֶ֣יךָ הַזֹּ֔את אֲשֶׁ֥ר הַמְּגִלָּ֣ה אֲנִ֖י נֹתֵ֣ן אֵלֶ֑יךָ וָאֹ֣כְלָ֔ה וַתְּהִ֥י לְמָתֽוֹק׃פ כִּדְבַ֥שׁ בְּפִ֖י ben- ’ā·ḏām biṭ·nə·ḵā way·yō·mer ’ê·lay ṯa·’ă·ḵêl ṯə·mal·lê ’êṯ ū·mê·‘e·ḵā haz·zōṯ ’ă·šer ham·mə·ḡil·lāh ’ă·nî nō·ṯên ’ê·le·ḵā wā·’ō·ḵə·lāh wat·tə·hî lə·mā·ṯō·wq kiḏ·ḇaš bə·p̄îWLC · 3

Then He said to me, “Son of man, go now… to the house of Israel and speak My words to them.

𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤁𐤍 𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤋𐤊 𐤁𐤀 𐤀𐤋 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤕 𐤁𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤉 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤌

וַיֹּ֖אמֶר אֵלָ֑י בֶּן־ אָדָ֗ם לֶךְ־ בֹּא֙ אֶל־ בֵּ֣ית יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וְדִבַּרְתָּ֥ בִדְבָרַ֖י אֲלֵיהֶֽם׃ way·yō·mer ’ê·lāy ben- ’ā·ḏām leḵ- bō ’el- bêṯ yiś·rā·’êl wə·ḏib·bar·tā ḇiḏ·ḇā·ray ’ă·lê·hemWLC · 4

For you are not being sent to a people of unfamiliar speech or difficult language, but to the house of Israel—

𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤋𐤀 𐤔𐤋𐤅𐤇 𐤀𐤋 𐤏𐤌 𐤏𐤌𐤒𐤉 𐤔𐤐𐤄 𐤅𐤊𐤁𐤃𐤉 𐤋𐤔𐤅𐤍 𐤀𐤋 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋

כִּ֡י אַתָּ֣ה לֹא֩ שָׁל֑וּחַ אֶל־ עַ֨ם עִמְקֵ֥י שָׂפָ֛ה וְכִבְדֵ֥י לָשׁ֖וֹן אֶל־ בֵּ֖ית יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ kî ’at·tāh lō šā·lū·aḥ ’el- ‘am ‘im·qê śā·p̄āh wə·ḵiḇ·ḏê lā·šō·wn ’el- bêṯ yiś·rā·’êlWLC · 5

not to the many peoples of unfamiliar speech and difficult language whose words you cannot understand. Surely… if I had sent you to them, they would have listened to you.

𐤋𐤀 𐤀𐤋 𐤓𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤌𐤒𐤉 𐤔𐤐𐤄 𐤅𐤊𐤁𐤃𐤉 𐤋𐤔𐤅𐤍 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤋𐤀 𐤕𐤔𐤌𐤏 𐤀𐤌 𐤋𐤀 𐤔𐤋𐤇𐤕𐤉𐤊 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤄𐤌𐤄 𐤉𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤅 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤊

לֹ֣א׀ אֶל־ רַבִּ֗ים עַמִּ֣ים עִמְקֵ֤י שָׂפָה֙ וְכִבְדֵ֣י לָשׁ֔וֹן אֲשֶׁ֥ר דִּבְרֵיהֶ֑ם לֹֽא־ תִשְׁמַ֖ע אִם־ לֹ֤א שְׁלַחְתִּ֔יךָ אֲלֵיהֶם֙ הֵ֖מָּה יִשְׁמְע֥וּ אֵלֶֽיךָ׃ lō ’el- rab·bîm ‘am·mîm ‘im·qê śā·p̄āh wə·ḵiḇ·ḏê lā·šō·wn ’ă·šer diḇ·rê·hem lō- ṯiš·ma‘ ’im- lō šə·laḥ·tî·ḵā ’ă·lê·hem hêm·māh yiš·mə·‘ū ’ê·le·ḵāWLC · 6

But the house of Israel vvv will be unwilling to listen to you, since vvv they are unwilling to listen to Me. For the whole house of Israel is hard-headed… and hard-hearted…

𐤅𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤀𐤁𐤅 𐤋𐤔𐤌𐤏 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤊 𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤉𐤍𐤌 𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤔𐤌𐤏 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤊𐤉 𐤊𐤋 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤇𐤆𐤒𐤉 𐤌𐤑𐤇 𐤅𐤒𐤔𐤉 𐤋𐤁 𐤄𐤌𐤄

וּבֵ֣ית יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל לֹ֤א יֹאבוּ֙ לִשְׁמֹ֣עַ אֵלֶ֔יךָ כִּֽי־ אֵינָ֥ם אֹבִ֖ים לִשְׁמֹ֣עַ אֵלָ֑י כִּ֚י כָּל־ בֵּ֣ית יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל חִזְקֵי־ מֵ֥צַח וּקְשֵׁי־ לֵ֖ב הֵֽמָּה׃ ū·ḇêṯ yiś·rā·’êl lō yō·ḇū liš·mō·a‘ ’ê·le·ḵā kî- ’ê·nām ’ō·ḇîm liš·mō·a‘ ’ê·lāy kî kāl- bêṯ yiś·rā·’êl ḥiz·qê- mê·ṣaḥ ū·qə·šê- lêḇ hêm·māhWLC · 7

Behold, I will make your face as hard as their faces, and your forehead as hard as their foreheads.

𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤍𐤕𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤕 𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤊 𐤇𐤆𐤒𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤏𐤌𐤕 𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤌𐤑𐤇𐤊 𐤇𐤆𐤒 𐤋𐤏𐤌𐤕 𐤌𐤑𐤇𐤌

הִנֵּ֨ה נָתַ֧תִּי אֶת־ פָּנֶ֛יךָ חֲזָקִ֖ים לְעֻמַּ֣ת פְּנֵיהֶ֑ם וְאֶֽת־ מִצְחֲךָ֥ חָזָ֖ק לְעֻמַּ֥ת מִצְחָֽם׃ hin·nêh nā·ṯat·tî ’eṯ- pā·ne·ḵā ḥă·zā·qîm lə·‘um·maṯ pə·nê·hem wə·’eṯ- miṣ·ḥă·ḵā ḥā·zāq lə·‘um·maṯ miṣ·ḥāmWLC · 8

I will make your forehead like a diamond, harder than flint. Do not be afraid of them [or] dismayed at their presence, even though they are a rebellious house.”

𐤍𐤕𐤕𐤉 𐤌𐤑𐤇𐤊 𐤊𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤓 𐤇𐤆𐤒 𐤌𐤑𐤓 𐤋𐤀 𐤕𐤉𐤓𐤀 𐤀𐤅𐤕𐤌 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤕𐤇𐤕 𐤌𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤊𐤉 𐤄𐤌𐤄𐤐 𐤌𐤓𐤉 𐤁𐤉𐤕

נָתַ֣תִּי מִצְחֶ֑ךָ כְּשָׁמִ֛יר חָזָ֥ק מִצֹּ֖ר לֹֽא־ תִירָ֤א אוֹתָם֙ וְלֹא־ תֵחַ֣ת מִפְּנֵיהֶ֔ם כִּ֛י הֵֽמָּה׃פ מְרִ֖י בֵּֽית־ nā·ṯat·tî miṣ·ḥe·ḵā kə·šā·mîr ḥā·zāq miṣ·ṣōr lō- ṯî·rā ’ō·w·ṯām wə·lō- ṯê·ḥaṯ mip·pə·nê·hem kî hêm·māh mə·rî bêṯ-WLC · 9

“Son of man,” He added…, “- listen carefully… to all the words I speak to you, and take them to heart.

𐤁𐤍 𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤁𐤀𐤆𐤍𐤉𐤊 𐤔𐤌𐤏 𐤊𐤋 𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤉 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤀𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤊 𐤒𐤇 𐤁𐤋𐤁𐤁𐤊

בֶּן־ אָדָ֕ם וַיֹּ֖אמֶר אֵלָ֑י אֶת־ וּבְאָזְנֶ֥יךָ שְׁמָֽע׃ כָּל־ דְּבָרַי֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר אֲדַבֵּ֣ר אֵלֶ֔יךָ קַ֥ח בִּֽלְבָבְךָ֖ ben- ’ā·ḏām way·yō·mer ’ê·lāy ’eṯ- ū·ḇə·’ā·zə·ne·ḵā šə·mā‘ kāl- də·ḇā·ray ’ă·šer ’ă·ḏab·bêr ’ê·le·ḵā qaḥ bil·ḇā·ḇə·ḵāWLC · 10

  • Go to your people…, the exiles; speak… to them and tell them, ‘This is what the Lord GOD says,’ whether they listen or refuse to listen.”

𐤅𐤋𐤊 𐤁𐤀 𐤀𐤋 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤏𐤌𐤊 𐤄𐤂𐤅𐤋𐤄 𐤅𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤕 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤕 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤊𐤄 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤌 𐤉𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤅 𐤅𐤀𐤌 𐤉𐤇𐤃𐤋𐤅

וְלֵ֨ךְ בֹּ֤א אֶל־ בְּנֵ֣י עַמֶּ֔ךָ הַגּוֹלָה֙ וְדִבַּרְתָּ֤ אֲלֵיהֶם֙ אֶל־ וְאָמַרְתָּ֣ אֲלֵיהֶ֔ם כֹּ֥ה אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהֹוִ֑ה אָמַ֖ר אִֽם־ יִשְׁמְע֖וּ וְאִם־ יֶחְדָּֽלוּ׃ wə·lêḵ bō ’el- bə·nê ‘am·me·ḵā hag·gō·w·lāh wə·ḏib·bar·tā ’ă·lê·hem ’el- wə·’ā·mar·tā ’ă·lê·hem kōh ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh ’ā·mar ’im- yiš·mə·‘ū wə·’im- yeḥ·dā·lūWLC · 11

Then the Spirit lifted me up, and I heard a great rumbling sound behind me: “Blessed be the glory of the LORD in His dwelling place!”

𐤓𐤅𐤇 𐤅𐤕𐤔𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤅𐤀𐤔𐤌𐤏 𐤂𐤃𐤅𐤋 𐤓𐤏𐤔 𐤒𐤅𐤋 𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤉 𐤁𐤓𐤅𐤊 𐤊𐤁𐤅𐤃 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤌𐤌𐤒𐤅𐤌𐤅

ר֔וּחַ וַתִּשָּׂאֵ֣נִי וָאֶשְׁמַ֣ע גָּד֑וֹל רַ֣עַשׁ ק֖וֹל אַחֲרַ֔י בָּר֥וּךְ כְּבוֹד־ יְהוָ֖ה מִמְּקוֹמֽוֹ׃ rū·aḥ wat·tiś·śā·’ê·nî wā·’eš·ma‘ gā·ḏō·wl ra·‘aš qō·wl ’a·ḥă·ray bā·rūḵ kə·ḇō·wḏ- Yah·weh mim·mə·qō·w·mōwWLC · 12

[It was] the sound of the wings of the living creatures brushing against one another and the sound of the wheels beside them, a great rumbling sound.

𐤅𐤒𐤅𐤋 𐤊𐤍𐤐𐤉 𐤄𐤇𐤉𐤅𐤕 𐤌𐤔𐤉𐤒𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤔𐤄 𐤀𐤇𐤅𐤕𐤄 𐤅𐤒𐤅𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤅𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤏𐤌𐤕𐤌 𐤂𐤃𐤅𐤋 𐤓𐤏𐤔 𐤅𐤒𐤅𐤋

וְק֣וֹל׀ כַּנְפֵ֣י הַחַיּ֗וֹת מַשִּׁיקוֹת֙ אֶל־ אִשָּׁ֣ה אֲחוֹתָ֔הּ וְק֥וֹל הָאוֹפַנִּ֖ים לְעֻמָּתָ֑ם גָּדֽוֹל׃ רַ֥עַשׁ וְק֖וֹל wə·qō·wl kan·p̄ê ha·ḥay·yō·wṯ maš·šî·qō·wṯ ’el- ’iš·šāh ’ă·ḥō·w·ṯāh wə·qō·wl hā·’ō·w·p̄an·nîm lə·‘um·mā·ṯām gā·ḏō·wl ra·‘aš wə·qō·wlWLC · 13

So the Spirit lifted me up and took me away, and I went in bitterness and in the anger of my spirit, with the strong hand of the LORD upon me.

וְר֥וּחַ נְשָׂאַ֖תְנִי וַתִּקָּחֵ֑נִי וָאֵלֵ֥ךְ מַר֙ בַּחֲמַ֣ת רוּחִ֔י חָזָֽקָה׃ וְיַד־ יְהוָ֥ה עָלַ֖י wə·rū·aḥ nə·śā·’aṯ·nî wat·tiq·qā·ḥê·nî wā·’ê·lêḵ mar ba·ḥă·maṯ rū·ḥî ḥā·zā·qāh wə·yaḏ- Yah·weh ‘ā·layWLC · 14

I came to the exiles vvv at Tel-abib who dwelt by the River Kebar. And for seven days I sat where they sat and remained there among them, overwhelmed.

𐤅𐤀𐤁𐤅𐤀 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤂𐤅𐤋𐤄 𐤕𐤋 𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤁 𐤄𐤉𐤔𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤋 𐤍𐤄𐤓 𐤊𐤁𐤓 𐤔𐤁𐤏𐤕 𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤔𐤌 𐤄𐤌𐤄 𐤉𐤅𐤔𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤔𐤁 𐤔𐤌 𐤁𐤕𐤅𐤊𐤌 𐤌𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤌

וָאָב֨וֹא אֶל־ הַגּוֹלָ֜ה תֵּ֣ל אָ֠בִיב הַיֹּשְׁבִ֤ים אֶֽל־ נְהַר־ כְּבָר֙ שִׁבְעַ֥ת יָמִ֖ים וָאֲשֶׁר שָׁ֑ם הֵ֖מָּה יוֹשְׁבִ֣ים וָאֵשֵׁ֥ב שָׁ֛ם בְּתוֹכָֽם׃ מַשְׁמִ֥ים wā·’ā·ḇō·w ’el- hag·gō·w·lāh têl ’ā·ḇîḇ hay·yō·šə·ḇîm ’el- nə·har- kə·ḇār šiḇ·‘aṯ yā·mîm wå̄·ʾă·šɛr šām hêm·māh yō·wō·šə·ḇîm wā·’ê·šêḇ šām bə·ṯō·w·ḵām maš·mîmWLC · 15

A Watchman for Israel

At the end of seven days… the word of the LORD came to me, saying,

𐤌𐤒𐤑𐤄 𐤔𐤁𐤏𐤕 𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤐 𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓

מִקְצֵ֖ה שִׁבְעַ֣ת יָמִ֑ים פ וַיְהִ֥י דְבַר־ יְהוָ֖ה וַיְהִ֕י אֵלַ֥י לֵאמֹֽר׃ miq·ṣêh šiḇ·‘aṯ yå̄·mīm p̄ way·hî ḏə·ḇar- Yah·weh way·hî ’ê·lay lê·mōrWLC · 16

“Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the house of Israel. Whenever you hear a word from My mouth, give them a warning from Me.

𐤁𐤍 𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤍𐤕𐤕𐤉𐤊 𐤑𐤐𐤄 𐤋𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤕 𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤌𐤌𐤍𐤉 𐤌𐤐𐤉 𐤅𐤄𐤆𐤄𐤓𐤕 𐤀𐤅𐤕𐤌

בֶּן־ אָדָ֕ם נְתַתִּ֖יךָ צֹפֶ֥ה לְבֵ֣ית יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וְשָׁמַעְתָּ֤ דָּבָ֔ר מִמֶּֽנִּי׃ מִפִּי֙ וְהִזְהַרְתָּ֥ אוֹתָ֖ם ben- ’ā·ḏām nə·ṯat·tî·ḵā ṣō·p̄eh lə·ḇêṯ yiś·rā·’êl wə·šā·ma‘·tā dā·ḇār mim·men·nî mip·pî wə·hiz·har·tā ’ō·w·ṯāmWLC · 17

If I say to the wicked man, ‘You will surely die…,’ but you do not warn him [or] speak out to warn him from his wicked way to save his life, that wicked man will die in his iniquity, and I will hold you responsible for his blood.

בְּאָמְרִ֤י לָֽרָשָׁע֙ מ֣וֹת תָּמ֔וּת וְלֹ֣א הִזְהַרְתּ֗וֹ וְלֹ֥א דִבַּ֛רְתָּ לְהַזְהִ֥יר רָשָׁ֛ע הָרְשָׁעָ֖ה מִדַּרְכּ֥וֹ לְחַיֹּת֑וֹ ה֤וּא רָשָׁע֙ יָמ֔וּת בַּעֲוֺנ֣וֹ מִיָּדְךָ֥ אֲבַקֵּֽשׁ׃ וְדָמ֖וֹ bə·’ā·mə·rî lā·rā·šā‘ mō·wṯ tā·mūṯ wə·lō hiz·har·tōw wə·lō ḏib·bar·tā lə·haz·hîr rā·šā‘ hā·rə·šā·‘āh mid·dar·kōw lə·ḥay·yō·ṯōw hū rā·šā‘ yā·mūṯ ba·‘ă·wō·nōw mî·yā·ḏə·ḵā ’ă·ḇaq·qêš wə·ḏā·mōwWLC · 18

But if you warn a wicked man and he does not turn from his wickedness and his wicked way, he will die in his iniquity, but you will have saved yourself.

כִּֽי־ וְאַתָּה֙ הִזְהַ֣רְתָּ רָשָׁ֔ע וְלֹא־ שָׁב֙ מֵֽרִשְׁע֔וֹ הָרְשָׁעָ֑ה וּמִדַּרְכּ֖וֹ ה֚וּא יָמ֔וּת בַּעֲוֺנ֣וֹ וְאַתָּ֖ה אֶֽת־ הִצַּֽלְתָּ׃ס נַפְשְׁךָ֥ kî- wə·’at·tāh hiz·har·tā rā·šā‘ wə·lō- šāḇ mê·riš·‘ōw hā·rə·šā·‘āh ū·mid·dar·kōw hū yā·mūṯ ba·‘ă·wō·nōw wə·’at·tāh ’eṯ- hiṣ·ṣal·tā nap̄·šə·ḵāWLC · 19

Now if a righteous man turns from his righteousness and commits iniquity, and I put a stumbling block before him, he will die. If you did not warn him, he will die in his sin, and the righteous acts he did will not be remembered. And I will hold you responsible for his blood.

צַדִּ֤יק וּבְשׁ֨וּב מִצִּדְקוֹ֙ וְעָ֣שָׂה עָ֔וֶל וְנָתַתִּ֥י מִכְשׁ֛וֹל לְפָנָ֖יו ה֣וּא יָמ֑וּת כִּ֣י לֹ֤א הִזְהַרְתּוֹ֙ יָמ֔וּת בְּחַטָּאת֣וֹ צִדְקֹתָו֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר עָשָׂ֔ה וְלֹ֣א תִזָּכַ֗רְןָ מִיָּדְךָ֥ אֲבַקֵּֽשׁ׃ וְדָמ֖וֹ ṣad·dîq ū·ḇə·šūḇ miṣ·ṣiḏ·qōw wə·‘ā·śāh ‘ā·wel wə·nā·ṯat·tî miḵ·šō·wl lə·p̄ā·nāw hū yā·mūṯ kî lō hiz·har·tōw yā·mūṯ bə·ḥaṭ·ṭā·ṯōw ṣiḏ·qō·ṯå̄w ’ă·šer ‘ā·śāh wə·lō ṯiz·zā·ḵar·nā mî·yā·ḏə·ḵā ’ă·ḇaq·qêš wə·ḏā·mōwWLC · 20

But if you warn the righteous man not to sin, and he does not sin, he will indeed live… because he heeded your warning, and you will have saved yourself.”

כִּ֧י וְאַתָּ֞ה הִזְהַרְתּ֣וֹ צַדִּ֗יק צַדִּ֖יק לְבִלְתִּ֥י חֲטֹ֛א וְה֣וּא לֹא־ חָטָ֑א חָי֤וֹ יִֽחְיֶה֙ כִּ֣י נִזְהָ֔ר וְאַתָּ֖ה אֶֽת־ הִצַּֽלְתָּ׃ס נַפְשְׁךָ֥ kî wə·’at·tāh hiz·har·tōw ṣad·dîq ṣad·dîq lə·ḇil·tî ḥă·ṭō wə·hū lō- ḥā·ṭā ḥā·yōw yiḥ·yeh kî niz·hār wə·’at·tāh ’eṯ- hiṣ·ṣal·tā nap̄·šə·ḵāWLC · 21

And there the hand of the LORD was upon me, and He said to me, “Get up, go out to the plain, and there I will speak with you.”

So I got up and went out to the plain, and behold, the glory of the LORD was present there, like the glory I had seen by the River Kebar, and I fell facedown…

וָאָקוּם֮ וָאֵצֵ֣א אֶל־ הַבִּקְעָה֒ וְהִנֵּה־ כְּבוֹד־ יְהוָה֙ עֹמֵ֔ד שָׁ֤ם כַּכָּב֕וֹד אֲשֶׁ֥ר רָאִ֖יתִי עַל־ נְהַר־ כְּבָ֑ר וָאֶפֹּ֖ל עַל־ פָּנָֽי׃ wā·’ā·qūm wā·’ê·ṣê ’el- hab·biq·‘āh wə·hin·nêh- kə·ḇō·wḏ- Yah·weh ‘ō·mêḏ šām kak·kā·ḇō·wḏ ’ă·šer rā·’î·ṯî ‘al- nə·har- kə·ḇār wā·’ep·pōl ‘al- pā·nāyWLC · 23

Then the Spirit entered me and set me on my feet. He spoke with me and said…, “Go, shut yourself inside your house.

ר֔וּחַ וַתָּבֹא־ בִ֣י וַתַּעֲמִדֵ֖נִי עַל־ רַגְלָ֑י וַיְדַבֵּ֤ר אֹתִי֙ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלַ֔י בֹּ֥א הִסָּגֵ֖ר בְּת֥וֹךְ בֵּיתֶֽךָ׃ rū·aḥ wat·tā·ḇō- ḇî wat·ta·‘ă·mi·ḏê·nî ‘al- raḡ·lāy way·ḏab·bêr ’ō·ṯî way·yō·mer ’ê·lay bō his·sā·ḡêr bə·ṯō·wḵ bê·ṯe·ḵāWLC · 24

And you, son of man,… they will tie with ropes -, and you will be bound so that you cannot go out among [the people].

וְאַתָּ֣ה בֶן־ אָדָ֗ם הִנֵּ֨ה נָתְנ֤וּ עֲבוֹתִ֔ים עָלֶ֙יךָ֙ וַאֲסָר֖וּךָ בָּהֶ֑ם וְלֹ֥א תֵצֵ֖א בְּתוֹכָֽם׃ wə·’at·tāh ḇen- ’ā·ḏām hin·nêh nā·ṯə·nū ‘ă·ḇō·w·ṯîm ‘ā·le·ḵā wa·’ă·sā·rū·ḵā bā·hem wə·lō ṯê·ṣê bə·ṯō·w·ḵāmWLC · 25

I will make your tongue stick to the roof of your mouth, and you will be silent and unable… to rebuke them, though they are a rebellious house.

וּלְשֽׁוֹנְךָ֙ אַדְבִּ֣יק אֶל־ חִכֶּ֔ךָ וְנֶֽאֱלַ֔מְתָּ וְלֹא־ תִֽהְיֶ֥ה לָהֶ֖ם לְאִ֣ישׁ מוֹכִ֑יחַ כִּ֛י הֵֽמָּה׃ מְרִ֖י בֵּ֥ית ū·lə·šō·wn·ḵā ’aḏ·bîq ’el- ḥik·ke·ḵā wə·ne·’ĕ·lam·tā wə·lō- ṯih·yeh lā·hem lə·’îš mō·w·ḵî·aḥ kî hêm·māh mə·rî bêṯWLC · 26

But when I speak with you, I will open your mouth, and you are to tell them, ‘This is what the Lord GOD says.’ Whoever listens, let him listen; and whoever refuses, let him refuse, for they are a rebellious house.

וּֽבְדַבְּרִ֤י אֽוֹתְךָ֙ אֶפְתַּ֣ח אֶת־ פִּ֔יךָ וְאָמַרְתָּ֣ אֲלֵיהֶ֔ם כֹּ֥ה אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהֹוִ֑ה אָמַ֖ר יִשְׁמָע֙ הַשֹּׁמֵ֤עַ׀ יֶחְדָּ֔ל וְהֶחָדֵ֣ל׀ כִּ֛י הֵֽמָּה׃ס מְרִ֖י בֵּ֥ית ū·ḇə·ḏab·bə·rî ’ō·wṯ·ḵā ’ep̄·taḥ ’eṯ- pî·ḵā wə·’ā·mar·tā ’ă·lê·hem kōh ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh ’ā·mar yiš·mā‘ haš·šō·mê·a‘ yeḥ·dāl wə·he·ḥā·ḏêl kî hêm·māh mə·rî bêṯWLC · 27
