Chapter 30
A Lament for Egypt
1
Again the word of the LORD came to me, saying,

דְבַר־ יְהוָ֖ה וַיְהִ֥י אֵלַ֥י לֵאמֹֽר׃ ḏə·ḇar- Yah·weh way·hî ’ê·lay lê·mōr — WLC · 1

“Son of man, prophesy and declare that this is what the Lord GOD says: Wail, ‘Alas for that day!’

בֶּן־ אָדָ֕ם הִנָּבֵא֙ וְאָ֣מַרְתָּ֔ כֹּ֥ה אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֑ה אָמַ֖ר הֵילִ֖ילוּ הָ֥הּ לַיּֽוֹם׃ ben- ’ā·ḏām hin·nā·ḇê wə·’ā·mar·tā kōh ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh ’ā·mar hê·lî·lū hāh lay·yō·wm — WLC · 2

For the day [is] near, the Day of the LORD is near. It will be a day of clouds, a time [of doom] for the nations.

כִּֽי־ י֔וֹם קָר֣וֹב י֖וֹם לַֽיהוָ֑ה וְקָר֥וֹב יִֽהְיֶֽה׃ י֣וֹם עָנָ֔ן עֵ֥ת גּוֹיִ֖ם kî- yō·wm qā·rō·wḇ yō·wm Yah·weh wə·qā·rō·wḇ yih·yeh yō·wm ‘ā·nān ‘êṯ gō·w·yim — WLC · 3

A sword will come against Egypt,… and there will be anguish in Cush when the slain fall in Egypt, its wealth is taken away, and its foundations are torn down.

חֶ֙רֶב֙ וּבָאָ֥ה בְּמִצְרַ֔יִם וְהָיְתָ֤ה חַלְחָלָה֙ בְּכ֔וּשׁ חָלָ֖ל בִּנְפֹ֥ל בְּמִצְרָ֑יִם הֲמוֹנָ֔הּ וְלָקְח֣וּ יְסוֹדֹתֶֽיהָ׃ וְנֶהֶרְס֖וּ ḥe·reḇ ū·ḇā·’āh bə·miṣ·ra·yim wə·hā·yə·ṯāh ḥal·ḥā·lāh bə·ḵūš ḥā·lāl bin·p̄ōl bə·miṣ·rā·yim hă·mō·w·nāh wə·lā·qə·ḥū yə·sō·w·ḏō·ṯe·hā wə·ne·her·sū — WLC · 4

Cush, Put, and Lud, and all the various peoples, as well as Libya and the men of the covenant land, will fall with [Egypt] by the sword.

כּ֣וּשׁ וּפ֤וּט וְלוּד֙ וְכָל־ הָעֶ֣רֶב וְכ֔וּב וּבְנֵ֖י הַבְּרִ֑ית אֶ֣רֶץ יִפֹּֽלוּ׃פ אִתָּ֖ם בַּחֶ֥רֶב kūš ū·p̄ūṭ wə·lūḏ wə·ḵāl hā·‘e·reḇ wə·ḵūḇ ū·ḇə·nê hab·bə·rîṯ ’e·reṣ yip·pō·lū ’it·tām ba·ḥe·reḇ — WLC · 5

For this is what the LORD says: The allies of Egypt will fall, and her proud strength will collapse. From Migdol to Syene they will fall by the sword within her, declares the Lord GOD.
𐤊𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤎𐤌𐤊𐤉 𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤍𐤐𐤋𐤅 𐤂𐤀𐤅𐤍 𐤏𐤆𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤃 𐤌𐤌𐤂𐤃𐤋 𐤎𐤅𐤍𐤄 𐤉𐤐𐤋𐤅 𐤁𐤇𐤓𐤁 𐤁𐤄 𐤍𐤀𐤌 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄
כֹּ֚ה יְהוָ֔ה אָמַ֣ר סֹמְכֵ֣י מִצְרַ֔יִם וְנָֽפְלוּ֙ גְּא֣וֹן עֻזָּ֑הּ וְיָרַ֖ד מִמִּגְדֹּ֣ל סְוֵנֵ֗ה יִפְּלוּ־ בַּחֶ֙רֶב֙ בָ֔הּ נְאֻ֖ם אֲדֹנָ֥י יְהוִֽה׃ kōh Yah·weh ’ā·mar sō·mə·ḵê miṣ·ra·yim wə·nā·p̄ə·lū gə·’ō·wn ‘uz·zāh wə·yā·raḏ mim·miḡ·dōl sə·wê·nêh yip·pə·lū- ba·ḥe·reḇ ḇāh nə·’um ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh — WLC · 6

They will be desolate among desolate lands, and their cities will lie among ruined cities.

וְנָשַׁ֕מּוּ בְּת֖וֹךְ נְשַׁמּ֑וֹת אֲרָצ֣וֹת וְעָרָ֕יו תִּֽהְיֶֽינָה׃ בְּתוֹךְ־ נַחֲרָב֖וֹת עָרִ֥ים wə·nā·šam·mū bə·ṯō·wḵ nə·šam·mō·wṯ ’ă·rā·ṣō·wṯ wə·‘ā·rāw tih·ye·nāh bə·ṯō·wḵ- na·ḥă·rā·ḇō·wṯ ‘ā·rîm — WLC · 7

Then they will know that I am the LORD when I set fire to Egypt and all her helpers are shattered.

וְיָדְע֖וּ כִּֽי־ אֲנִ֣י יְהוָ֑ה בְּתִתִּי־ אֵ֣שׁ בְּמִצְרַ֔יִם כָּל־ עֹזְרֶֽיהָ׃ וְנִשְׁבְּר֖וּ wə·yā·ḏə·‘ū kî- ’ă·nî Yah·weh bə·ṯit·tî- ’êš bə·miṣ·ra·yim kāl- ‘ō·zə·re·hā wə·niš·bə·rū — WLC · 8

On that day messengers will go out from Me in ships to frighten Cush out of complacency. Anguish will come upon them on the day of Egypt’s [doom]. For it is indeed coming.

הַה֗וּא בַּיּ֣וֹם מַלְאָכִ֤ים יֵצְא֨וּ מִלְּפָנַי֙ בַּצִּ֔ים לְהַחֲרִ֖יד אֶת־ כּ֣וּשׁ בֶּ֑טַח חַלְחָלָ֤ה וְהָיְתָ֨ה בָהֶם֙ בְּי֣וֹם מִצְרַ֔יִם כִּ֥י הִנֵּ֖ה בָּאָֽה׃ס ha·hū bay·yō·wm mal·’ā·ḵîm yê·ṣə·’ū mil·lə·p̄ā·nay baṣ·ṣîm lə·ha·ḥă·rîḏ ’eṯ- kūš be·ṭaḥ ḥal·ḥā·lāh wə·hā·yə·ṯāh ḇā·hem bə·yō·wm miṣ·ra·yim kî hin·nêh bā·’āh — WLC · 9

This is what the Lord GOD says: I will put an end to the hordes of Egypt by the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon.
𐤊𐤄 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤅𐤄𐤔𐤁𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤌𐤅𐤍 𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤉𐤃 𐤍𐤁𐤅𐤊𐤃𐤓𐤀𐤑𐤓 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤁𐤁𐤋
כֹּ֥ה אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֑ה אָמַ֖ר וְהִשְׁבַּתִּי֙ אֶת־ הֲמ֣וֹן מִצְרַ֔יִם בְּיַ֖ד נְבוּכַדְרֶאצַּ֥ר מֶלֶךְ־ בָּבֶֽל׃ kōh ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh ’ā·mar wə·hiš·bat·tî ’eṯ- hă·mō·wn miṣ·ra·yim bə·yaḏ nə·ḇū·ḵaḏ·reṣ·ṣar me·leḵ- bā·ḇel — WLC · 10

He and his people with him, the most ruthless of the nations, will be brought in to destroy the land. They will draw their swords against Egypt and fill the land with the slain.
𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤅𐤏𐤌𐤅 𐤀𐤕𐤅 𐤏𐤓𐤉𐤑𐤉 𐤂𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤅𐤁𐤀𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤔𐤇𐤕 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤅𐤄𐤓𐤉𐤒𐤅 𐤇𐤓𐤁𐤅𐤕𐤌 𐤏𐤋 𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤇𐤋𐤋
ה֠וּא וְעַמּ֤וֹ אִתּוֹ֙ עָרִיצֵ֣י גוֹיִ֔ם מֽוּבָאִ֖ים לְשַׁחֵ֣ת הָאָ֑רֶץ וְהֵרִ֤יקוּ חַרְבוֹתָם֙ עַל־ מִצְרַ֔יִם וּמָלְא֥וּ אֶת־ הָאָ֖רֶץ חָלָֽל׃ hū wə·‘am·mōw ’it·tōw ‘ā·rî·ṣê ḡō·w·yim mū·ḇā·’îm lə·ša·ḥêṯ hā·’ā·reṣ wə·hê·rî·qū ḥar·ḇō·w·ṯām ‘al- miṣ·ra·yim ū·mā·lə·’ū ’eṯ- hā·’ā·reṣ ḥā·lāl — WLC · 11

I will make the streams dry up and sell the land to the wicked. By the hands of foreigners I will bring desolation upon the land and everything in it. I, the LORD, have spoken.

וְנָתַתִּ֤י יְאֹרִים֙ חָֽרָבָ֔ה וּמָכַרְתִּ֥י אֶת־ הָאָ֖רֶץ בְּיַד־ רָעִ֑ים בְּיַד־ זָרִ֔ים וַהֲשִׁמֹּתִ֞י אֶ֤רֶץ וּמְלֹאָהּ֙ אֲנִ֥י יְהוָ֖ה דִּבַּֽרְתִּי׃ס wə·nā·ṯat·tî yə·’ō·rîm ḥā·rā·ḇāh ū·mā·ḵar·tî ’eṯ- hā·’ā·reṣ bə·yaḏ- rā·‘îm bə·yaḏ- zā·rîm wa·hă·šim·mō·ṯî ’e·reṣ ū·mə·lō·’āh ’ă·nî Yah·weh dib·bar·tî — WLC · 12

This is what the Lord GOD says: I will destroy the idols and put an end to the images in Memphis. There will no longer be a prince vvv in Egypt, and I will instill fear in that land…

כֹּֽה־ אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֗ה אָמַ֞ר וְהַאֲבַדְתִּ֨י גִלּוּלִ֜ים וְהִשְׁבַּתִּ֤י אֱלִילִים֙ מִנֹּ֔ף לֹ֣א ע֑וֹד יִֽהְיֶה־ וְנָשִׂ֥יא מֵאֶֽרֶץ־ מִצְרַ֖יִם וְנָתַתִּ֥י יִרְאָ֖ה בְּאֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרָֽיִם׃ kōh- ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh ’ā·mar wə·ha·’ă·ḇaḏ·tî ḡil·lū·lîm wə·hiš·bat·tî ’ĕ·lî·lîm min·nōp̄ lō ‘ō·wḏ yih·yeh- wə·nā·śî mê·’e·reṣ- miṣ·ra·yim wə·nā·ṯat·tî yir·’āh bə·’e·reṣ miṣ·rā·yim — WLC · 13

I will lay waste Pathros -, set fire to Zoan, and execute judgment on Thebes.

וַהֲשִׁמֹּתִי֙ פַּתְר֔וֹס אֶת־ וְנָתַ֥תִּי אֵ֖שׁ בְּצֹ֑עַן וְעָשִׂ֥יתִי שְׁפָטִ֖ים בְּנֹֽא׃ wa·hă·šim·mō·ṯî paṯ·rō·ws ’eṯ- wə·nā·ṯat·tî ’êš bə·ṣō·‘an wə·‘ā·śî·ṯî šə·p̄ā·ṭîm bə·nō — WLC · 14

I will pour out My wrath on Pelusium, the stronghold of Egypt, and cut off the crowds of Thebes.

וְשָׁפַכְתִּ֣י חֲמָתִ֔י עַל־ סִ֖ין מָע֣וֹז מִצְרָ֑יִם וְהִכְרַתִּ֖י אֶת־ הֲמ֥וֹן נֹֽא׃ wə·šā·p̄aḵ·tî ḥă·mā·ṯî ‘al- sîn mā·‘ō·wz miṣ·rā·yim wə·hiḵ·rat·tî ’eṯ- hă·mō·wn nō — WLC · 15

I will set fire to Egypt, Pelusium will writhe in anguish…, Thebes will be split open, and Memphis [will face] daily distress.

וְנָתַ֤תִּי אֵשׁ֙ בְּמִצְרַ֔יִם סִ֔ין ח֤וּל תָּחִיל וְנֹ֖א תִּהְיֶ֣ה לְהִבָּקֵ֑עַ וְנֹ֖ף יוֹמָֽם׃ צָרֵ֥י wə·nā·ṯat·tî ’êš bə·miṣ·ra·yim sîn ḥūl tå̄·ḥīl wə·nō tih·yeh lə·hib·bā·qê·a‘ wə·nōp̄ yō·w·mām ṣā·rê — WLC · 16

The young men of On vvv and Pi-beseth will fall by the sword, and those [cities] will go into captivity.

בַּח֥וּרֵי אָ֛וֶן וּפִי־ בֶ֖סֶת יִפֹּ֑לוּ בַּחֶ֣רֶב וְהֵ֖נָּה תֵלַֽכְנָה׃ בַּשְּׁבִ֥י ba·ḥū·rê ’ā·wen ū·p̄î- ḇe·seṯ yip·pō·lū ba·ḥe·reḇ wə·hên·nāh ṯê·laḵ·nāh baš·šə·ḇî — WLC · 17

The day will be darkened in Tahpanhes when I break - the yoke of Egypt and her proud strength… comes to an end. A cloud will cover her, and her daughters will go into captivity.

הַיּ֔וֹם חָשַׂ֣ךְ וּבִֽתְחַפְנְחֵס֙ בְּשִׁבְרִי־ שָׁם֙ אֶת־ מֹט֣וֹת מִצְרַ֔יִם בָּ֖הּ גְּא֣וֹן עֻזָּ֑הּ הִ֚יא וְנִשְׁבַּת־ עָנָ֣ן יְכַסֶּ֔נָּה וּבְנוֹתֶ֖יהָ תֵלַֽכְנָה׃ בַּשְּׁבִ֥י hay·yō·wm ḥā·śaḵ ū·ḇiṯ·ḥap̄·nə·ḥês bə·šiḇ·rî- šām ’eṯ- mō·ṭō·wṯ miṣ·ra·yim bāh gə·’ō·wn ‘uz·zāh hî wə·niš·baṯ- ‘ā·nān yə·ḵas·sen·nāh ū·ḇə·nō·w·ṯe·hā ṯê·laḵ·nāh baš·šə·ḇî — WLC · 18

So I will execute judgment on Egypt, and they will know that I am the LORD.”

Pharaoh’s Power Broken

In the eleventh… year, on the seventh day of the first month, the word of the LORD came to me, saying,

“Son of man, I have broken the arm of Pharaoh king of Egypt. See, it has not been bound up for healing, vvv or splinted… for strength to hold the sword.

בֶּן־ אָדָ֕ם אֶת־ שָׁבָ֑רְתִּי זְר֛וֹעַ פַּרְעֹ֥ה מֶֽלֶךְ־ מִצְרַ֖יִם וְהִנֵּ֣ה לֹֽא־ חֻ֠בְּשָׁה רְפֻא֜וֹת לָתֵ֨ת לָשׂ֥וּם חִתּ֛וּל לְחָבְשָׁ֥הּ לְחָזְקָ֖הּ לִתְפֹּ֥שׂ בֶּחָֽרֶב׃ס ben- ’ā·ḏām ’eṯ- šā·ḇā·rə·tî zə·rō·w·a‘ par·‘ōh me·leḵ- miṣ·ra·yim wə·hin·nêh lō- ḥub·bə·šāh rə·p̄u·’ō·wṯ lā·ṯêṯ lā·śūm ḥit·tūl lə·ḥā·ḇə·šāh lə·ḥā·zə·qāh liṯ·pōś be·ḥā·reḇ — WLC · 21

Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: Behold, I am against Pharaoh king of Egypt. I will break his arms, both the strong one and the one already broken, and will make the sword fall from his hand.

I will disperse the Egyptians among the nations and scatter them throughout the lands.

I will strengthen the arms of Babylon’s king and place My sword in his hand, but I will break the arms of Pharaoh, [who] will groan before him like a [mortally] wounded [man].

וְחִזַּקְתִּ֗י אֶת־ זְרֹעוֹת֙ בָּבֶ֔ל מֶ֣לֶךְ וְנָתַתִּ֥י אֶת־ חַרְבִּ֖י בְּיָד֑וֹ וְשָׁבַרְתִּי֙ אֶת־ זְרֹע֣וֹת פַּרְעֹ֔ה וְנָאַ֛ק לְפָנָֽיו׃ נַאֲק֥וֹת חָלָ֖ל wə·ḥiz·zaq·tî ’eṯ- zə·rō·‘ō·wṯ bā·ḇel me·leḵ wə·nā·ṯat·tî ’eṯ- ḥar·bî bə·yā·ḏōw wə·šā·ḇar·tî ’eṯ- zə·rō·‘ō·wṯ par·‘ōh wə·nā·’aq lə·p̄ā·nāw na·’ă·qō·wṯ ḥā·lāl — WLC · 24

I will strengthen the arms of Babylon’s king, but Pharaoh’s arms will fall limp. Then they will know that I am the LORD, when I place My sword in the hand of Babylon’s king, and he wields it against the land of Egypt.
