Chapter 31
Egypt Will Fall like Assyria
1
In the eleventh… year, on the first day of the third month, the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤁𐤀𐤇𐤕 𐤏𐤔𐤓𐤄 𐤔𐤍𐤄 𐤁𐤀𐤇𐤃 𐤋𐤇𐤃𐤔 𐤁𐤔𐤋𐤉𐤔𐤉 𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓
וַיְהִ֗י בְּאַחַ֤ת עֶשְׂרֵה֙ שָׁנָ֔ה בְּאֶחָ֣ד לַחֹ֑דֶשׁ בַּשְּׁלִישִׁ֖י דְבַר־ יְהוָ֖ה הָיָ֥ה אֵלַ֥י לֵאמֹֽר׃ way·hî bə·’a·ḥaṯ ‘eś·rêh šā·nāh bə·’e·ḥāḏ la·ḥō·ḏeš baš·šə·lî·šî ḏə·ḇar- Yah·weh hā·yāh ’ê·lay lê·mōr — WLC · 1

“Son of man, say to Pharaoh king of Egypt and to his multitude:… ‘Who can be compared to your greatness?

Look at Assyria, a cedar in Lebanon, with beautiful branches that shaded the forest. It towered on high; its top was among the clouds.
𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤀𐤔𐤅𐤓 𐤀𐤓𐤆 𐤁𐤋𐤁𐤍𐤅𐤍 𐤉𐤐𐤄 𐤏𐤍𐤐 𐤌𐤑𐤋 𐤅𐤇𐤓𐤔 𐤅𐤂𐤁𐤄 𐤒𐤅𐤌𐤄 𐤑𐤌𐤓𐤕𐤅 𐤄𐤉𐤕𐤄 𐤅𐤁𐤉𐤍 𐤏𐤁𐤕𐤉𐤌
הִנֵּ֨ה אַשּׁ֜וּר אֶ֣רֶז בַּלְּבָנ֗וֹן יְפֵ֥ה עָנָ֛ף מֵצַ֖ל וְחֹ֥רֶשׁ וּגְבַ֣הּ קוֹמָ֑ה צַמַּרְתּֽוֹ׃ הָיְתָ֖ה וּבֵ֣ין עֲבֹתִ֔ים hin·nêh ’aš·šūr ’e·rez bal·lə·ḇā·nō·wn yə·p̄êh ‘ā·nāp̄ mê·ṣal wə·ḥō·reš ū·ḡə·ḇah qō·w·māh ṣam·mar·tōw hā·yə·ṯāh ū·ḇên ‘ă·ḇō·ṯîm — WLC · 3

The waters made it grow; the deep springs made it tall, directing their streams all around its base and sending their channels to all the trees of the field.
𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤂𐤃𐤋𐤅𐤄𐤅 𐤕𐤄𐤅𐤌 𐤓𐤌𐤌𐤕𐤄𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤋𐤊 𐤍𐤄𐤓𐤕𐤉𐤄 𐤎𐤁𐤉𐤁𐤅𐤕 𐤌𐤈𐤏𐤄 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤔𐤋𐤇𐤄 𐤕𐤏𐤋𐤕𐤉𐤄 𐤀𐤋 𐤊𐤋 𐤏𐤑𐤉 𐤄𐤔𐤃𐤄
מַ֣יִם גִּדְּל֔וּהוּ תְּה֖וֹם רֹֽמְמָ֑תְהוּ אֶת־ הֹלֵךְ֙ נַהֲרֹתֶ֗יהָ סְבִיב֣וֹת מַטָּעָ֔הּ וְאֶת־ שִׁלְחָ֔ה תְּעָלֹתֶ֣יהָ אֶ֖ל כָּל־ עֲצֵ֥י הַשָּׂדֶֽה׃ ma·yim gid·də·lū·hū tə·hō·wm rō·mə·mā·ṯə·hū ’eṯ- hō·lêḵ na·hă·rō·ṯe·hā sə·ḇî·ḇō·wṯ maṭ·ṭā·‘āh wə·’eṯ- šil·ḥāh tə·‘ā·lō·ṯe·hā ’el kāl- ‘ă·ṣê haś·śā·ḏeh — WLC · 4

Therefore… it towered higher than all the trees of the field. Its branches multiplied, and its boughs grew long as it spread them out because of the abundant waters.

עַל־ כֵּן֙ גָּבְהָ֣א קֹמָת֔וֹ מִכֹּ֖ל עֲצֵ֣י הַשָּׂדֶ֑ה סַֽרְעַפֹּתָ֜יו וַתִּרְבֶּ֨ינָה פֹארָתוֹ וַתֶּאֱרַ֧כְנָה בְּשַׁלְּחֽוֹ׃ רַבִּ֖ים מִמַּ֥יִם ‘al- kên gā·ḇə·hā qō·mā·ṯōw mik·kōl ‘ă·ṣê haś·śā·ḏeh sar·‘ap·pō·ṯāw wat·tir·be·nāh p̄ō·rå̄·ṯō wat·te·’ĕ·raḵ·nāh bə·šal·lə·ḥōw rab·bîm mim·ma·yim — WLC · 5

All the birds of the air nested in its branches, and all the beasts of the field gave birth beneath its boughs; all the great nations lived in its shade.

כָּל־ ע֣וֹף הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם קִֽנְנוּ֙ בִּסְעַפֹּתָ֤יו כֹּ֖ל חַיַּ֣ת הַשָּׂדֶ֑ה יָֽלְד֔וּ וְתַ֤חַת פֹּֽארֹתָיו֙ כֹּ֖ל רַבִּֽים׃ גּוֹיִ֥ם יֵֽשְׁב֔וּ וּבְצִלּוֹ֙ kāl- ‘ō·wp̄ haš·šā·ma·yim qin·nū bis·‘ap·pō·ṯāw kōl ḥay·yaṯ haś·śā·ḏeh yā·lə·ḏū wə·ṯa·ḥaṯ pō·rō·ṯāw kōl rab·bîm gō·w·yim yê·šə·ḇū ū·ḇə·ṣil·lōw — WLC · 6

It was beautiful in its greatness, in the length of its limbs, for its roots extended to abundant waters.

וַיְּיִ֣ף בְּגָדְל֔וֹ בְּאֹ֖רֶךְ דָּֽלִיּוֹתָ֑יו כִּֽי־ שָׁרְשׁ֖וֹ הָיָ֥ה אֶל־ רַבִּֽים׃ מַ֥יִם way·yə·yip̄ bə·ḡā·ḏə·lōw bə·’ō·reḵ dā·lî·yō·w·ṯāw kî- šā·rə·šōw hā·yāh ’el- rab·bîm ma·yim — WLC · 7

The cedars in the garden of God could not rival it; the cypresses could not compare with its branches, nor the plane trees match its boughs. No… tree in the garden of God could compare with its beauty.

אֲרָזִ֣ים בְּגַן־ אֱלֹהִים֒ לֹֽא־ עֲמָמֻהוּ֮ בְּרוֹשִׁ֗ים לֹ֤א דָמוּ֙ אֶל־ סְעַפֹּתָ֔יו לֹֽא־ וְעַרְמֹנִ֥ים הָי֖וּ כְּפֹֽארֹתָ֑יו כָּל־ לֹא־ עֵץ֙ בְּגַן־ אֱלֹהִ֔ים דָמָ֥ה אֵלָ֖יו בְּיָפְיֽוֹ׃ ’ă·rā·zîm bə·ḡan- ’ĕ·lō·hîm lō- ‘ă·mā·mu·hū bə·rō·wō·šîm lō ḏā·mū ’el- sə·‘ap·pō·ṯāw lō- wə·‘ar·mō·nîm hā·yū kə·p̄ō·rō·ṯāw kāl- lō- ‘êṣ bə·ḡan- ’ĕ·lō·hîm ḏā·māh ’ê·lāw bə·yā·p̄ə·yōw — WLC · 8

I made it beautiful with its many branches, the envy of all the trees of Eden, which were in the garden of God.’

עֲשִׂיתִ֔יו יָפֶ֣ה בְּרֹ֖ב דָּֽלִיּוֹתָ֑יו וַיְקַנְאֻ֙הוּ֙ כָּל־ עֲצֵי־ עֵ֔דֶן אֲשֶׁ֖ר בְּגַ֥ן הָאֱלֹהִֽים׃ס ‘ă·śî·ṯîw yā·p̄eh bə·rōḇ dā·lî·yō·w·ṯāw way·qan·’u·hū kāl- ‘ă·ṣê- ‘ê·ḏen ’ă·šer bə·ḡan hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm — WLC · 9

Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Since it became great in height and set its top… among the clouds, and it grew proud… on account of its height,

לָכֵ֗ן כֹּ֤ה אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֔ה אָמַר֙ יַ֕עַן אֲשֶׁ֥ר גָּבַ֖הְתָּ בְּקוֹמָ֑ה וַיִּתֵּ֤ן צַמַּרְתּוֹ֙ אֶל־ בֵּ֣ין עֲבוֹתִ֔ים וְרָ֥ם לְבָב֖וֹ בְּגָבְהֽוֹ׃ lā·ḵên kōh ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh ’ā·mar ya·‘an ’ă·šer gā·ḇah·tā bə·qō·w·māh way·yit·tên ṣam·mar·tōw ’el- bên ‘ă·ḇō·w·ṯîm wə·rām lə·ḇā·ḇōw bə·ḡā·ḇə·hōw — WLC · 10

I delivered it into the hand of the ruler of the nations, for him to deal with it according to its wickedness. I have banished it.

וְאֶ֨תְּנֵ֔הוּ בְּיַ֖ד אֵ֣יל גּוֹיִ֑ם עָשׂ֤וֹ יַֽעֲשֶׂה֙ ל֔וֹ כְּרִשְׁע֖וֹ גֵּרַשְׁתִּֽהוּ׃ wə·’et·tə·nê·hū bə·yaḏ ’êl gō·w·yim ‘ā·śōw ya·‘ă·śeh lōw kə·riš·‘ōw gê·raš·ti·hū — WLC · 11

Foreigners, the most ruthless of the nations, cut it down and left it. Its branches have fallen on the mountains and in every valley; its boughs lay broken in all the earth’s ravines. And all the peoples of the earth left its shade and abandoned it.

זָרִ֛ים עָרִיצֵ֥י גוֹיִ֖ם וַיִּכְרְתֻ֧הוּ וַֽיִּטְּשֻׁ֑הוּ דָלִיּוֹתָ֗יו נָפְל֣וּ אֶל־ הֶ֠הָרִים וּבְכָל־ גֵּ֨אָי֜וֹת פֹֽארֹתָיו֙ וַתִּשָּׁבַ֤רְנָה בְּכֹל֙ הָאָ֔רֶץ אֲפִיקֵ֣י כָּל־ עַמֵּ֥י הָאָ֖רֶץ וַיֵּרְד֧וּ מִצִּלּ֛וֹ וַֽיִּטְּשֻֽׁהוּ׃ zā·rîm ‘ā·rî·ṣê ḡō·w·yim way·yiḵ·rə·ṯu·hū way·yiṭ·ṭə·šu·hū ḏā·lî·yō·w·ṯāw nā·p̄ə·lū ’el- he·hā·rîm ū·ḇə·ḵāl gê·’ā·yō·wṯ p̄ō·rō·ṯāw wat·tiš·šā·ḇar·nāh bə·ḵōl hā·’ā·reṣ ’ă·p̄î·qê kāl- ‘am·mê hā·’ā·reṣ way·yê·rə·ḏū miṣ·ṣil·lōw way·yiṭ·ṭə·šu·hū — WLC · 12

All the birds of the air nested on its fallen trunk, and all the beasts of the field lived among its boughs.
𐤊𐤋 𐤏𐤅𐤐 𐤄𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤔𐤊𐤍𐤅 𐤏𐤋 𐤌𐤐𐤋𐤕𐤅 𐤊𐤋 𐤇𐤉𐤕 𐤄𐤔𐤃𐤄 𐤄𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤀𐤋 𐤐𐤀𐤓𐤕𐤉𐤅
כָּל־ ע֣וֹף הַשָּׁמָ֑יִם יִשְׁכְּנ֖וּ עַל־ מַפַּלְתּ֥וֹ כֹּ֖ל חַיַּ֥ת הַשָּׂדֶֽה׃ הָי֔וּ וְאֶל־ פֹּארֹתָ֣יו kāl- ‘ō·wp̄ haš·šā·mā·yim yiš·kə·nū ‘al- map·pal·tōw kōl ḥay·yaṯ haś·śā·ḏeh hā·yū wə·’el- pō·rō·ṯāw — WLC · 13

This happened so that no other trees by the waters would become great in height and set their tops among the clouds, and no other well-watered… trees would reach them in height… For they have all been consigned to death, to the depths of the earth, among the mortals… who descend to the Pit.’

לְמַ֡עַן אֲשֶׁר֩ לֹא־ כָּל־ עֲצֵי־ מַ֗יִם יִגְבְּה֨וּ בְקוֹמָתָ֜ם וְלֹֽא־ יִתְּנ֤וּ אֶת־ צַמַּרְתָּם֙ אֶל־ בֵּ֣ין עֲבֹתִ֔ים וְלֹֽא־ שֹׁ֣תֵי מָ֑יִם אֵלֵיהֶ֛ם יַעַמְד֧וּ בְּגָבְהָ֖ם כָּל־ כִּֽי־ כֻלָּם֩ נִתְּנ֨וּ לַמָּ֜וֶת אֶל־ תַּחְתִּ֗ית אֶ֣רֶץ בְּת֛וֹךְ בְּנֵ֥י אָדָ֖ם אֶל־ י֥וֹרְדֵי בֽוֹר׃ס lə·ma·‘an ’ă·šer lō- kāl- ‘ă·ṣê- ma·yim yiḡ·bə·hū ḇə·qō·w·mā·ṯām wə·lō- yit·tə·nū ’eṯ- ṣam·mar·tām ’el- bên ‘ă·ḇō·ṯîm wə·lō- šō·ṯê mā·yim ’ê·lê·hem ya·‘am·ḏū bə·ḡā·ḇə·hām kāl- kî- ḵul·lām nit·tə·nū lam·mā·weṯ ’el- taḥ·tîṯ ’e·reṣ bə·ṯō·wḵ bə·nê ’ā·ḏām ’el- yō·wr·ḏê ḇō·wr — WLC · 14

This is what the Lord GOD says: ‘On the day it was brought down to Sheol, I caused mourning. I covered the deep because of it; I held back its rivers; its abundant waters were restrained. I made Lebanon mourn for it, and all the trees of the field fainted because of it.

I made the nations quake at the sound of its downfall, when I cast it down to Sheol with those who descend to the Pit. Then all the trees of Eden, the choicest and best of Lebanon, all the well-watered trees…, were consoled in the earth below.

They too descended with it to Sheol, to those slain by the sword. As its allies they had lived in its shade among the nations.

Who then is like you in glory and greatness among the trees of Eden? You also will be brought down to the depths of the earth to be with the trees of Eden… You will lie among the uncircumcised, with those slain by the sword. This is Pharaoh and all his multitude, declares the Lord GOD.’”
