Chapter 33
Ezekiel the Watchman for Israel
1
Again the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓
דְבַר־ יְהוָ֖ה וַיְהִ֥י אֵלַ֥י לֵאמֹֽר׃ ḏə·ḇar- Yah·weh way·hî ’ê·lay lê·mōr — WLC · 1

“Son of man, speak to your people… and tell them: ‘Suppose I bring the sword against a land, and the people of that land choose a man from among them, appointing him as their watchman,
𐤁𐤍 𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤏𐤌𐤊 𐤅𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤕 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤀 𐤇𐤓𐤁 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤄 𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤏𐤌 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤅𐤋𐤒𐤇𐤅 𐤀𐤇𐤃 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤌𐤒𐤑𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤅𐤍𐤕𐤍𐤅 𐤀𐤕𐤅 𐤋𐤄𐤌 𐤋𐤑𐤐𐤄
בֶּן־ אָדָ֗ם דַּבֵּ֤ר אֶל־ בְּנֵֽי־ עַמְּךָ֙ וְאָמַרְתָּ֣ אֲלֵיהֶ֔ם כִּֽי־ אָבִ֥יא חָ֑רֶב עָלֶ֖יהָ אֶ֕רֶץ עַם־ הָאָ֜רֶץ וְלָקְח֨וּ אֶחָד֙ אִ֤ישׁ מִקְצֵיהֶ֔ם וְנָתְנ֥וּ אֹת֛וֹ לָהֶ֖ם לְצֹפֶֽה׃ ben- ’ā·ḏām dab·bêr ’el- bə·nê- ‘am·mə·ḵā wə·’ā·mar·tā ’ă·lê·hem kî- ’ā·ḇî ḥā·reḇ ‘ā·le·hā ’e·reṣ ‘am- hā·’ā·reṣ wə·lā·qə·ḥū ’e·ḥāḏ ’îš miq·ṣê·hem wə·nā·ṯə·nū ’ō·ṯōw lā·hem lə·ṣō·p̄eh — WLC · 2

and he sees the sword coming against that land and blows the ram’s horn to warn the people.
𐤅𐤓𐤀𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤇𐤓𐤁 𐤁𐤀𐤄 𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤅𐤕𐤒𐤏 𐤁𐤔𐤅𐤐𐤓 𐤅𐤄𐤆𐤄𐤉𐤓 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤏𐤌
וְרָאָ֥ה אֶת־ הַחֶ֖רֶב בָּאָ֣ה עַל־ הָאָ֑רֶץ וְתָקַ֥ע בַּשּׁוֹפָ֖ר וְהִזְהִ֥יר אֶת־ הָעָֽם׃ wə·rā·’āh ’eṯ- ha·ḥe·reḇ bā·’āh ‘al- hā·’ā·reṣ wə·ṯā·qa‘ baš·šō·w·p̄ār wə·hiz·hîr ’eṯ- hā·‘ām — WLC · 3

Then if anyone hears… the sound of the horn but fails to heed the warning, and the sword comes and takes him away, his blood will be on his own head.
𐤅𐤔𐤌𐤏 𐤄𐤔𐤌𐤏 𐤀𐤕 𐤒𐤅𐤋 𐤄𐤔𐤅𐤐𐤓 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤍𐤆𐤄𐤓 𐤇𐤓𐤁 𐤅𐤕𐤁𐤅𐤀 𐤅𐤕𐤒𐤇𐤄𐤅 𐤃𐤌𐤅 𐤉𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤁𐤓𐤀𐤔𐤅
וְשָׁמַ֨ע הַשֹּׁמֵ֜עַ אֶת־ ק֤וֹל הַשּׁוֹפָר֙ וְלֹ֣א נִזְהָ֔ר חֶ֖רֶב וַתָּ֥בוֹא וַתִּקָּחֵ֑הוּ דָּמ֥וֹ יִֽהְיֶֽה׃ בְרֹאשׁ֖וֹ wə·šā·ma‘ haš·šō·mê·a‘ ’eṯ- qō·wl haš·šō·w·p̄ār wə·lō niz·hār ḥe·reḇ wat·tā·ḇō·w wat·tiq·qā·ḥê·hū dā·mōw yih·yeh ḇə·rō·šōw — WLC · 4

- Since he heard the sound of the horn but failed to heed the warning, his blood will be on his own head. If he had heeded the warning, he would have saved his life.
𐤀𐤕 𐤔𐤌𐤏 𐤒𐤅𐤋 𐤄𐤔𐤅𐤐𐤓 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤍𐤆𐤄𐤓 𐤃𐤌𐤅 𐤉𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤁𐤅 𐤅𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤍𐤆𐤄𐤓 𐤌𐤋𐤈 𐤍𐤐𐤔𐤅
אֵת֩ שָׁמַע֙ ק֨וֹל הַשּׁוֹפָ֤ר וְלֹ֣א נִזְהָ֔ר דָּמ֖וֹ יִֽהְיֶ֑ה בּ֣וֹ וְה֥וּא נִזְהָ֖ר מִלֵּֽט׃ נַפְשׁ֥וֹ ’êṯ šā·ma‘ qō·wl haš·šō·w·p̄ār wə·lō niz·hār dā·mōw yih·yeh bōw wə·hū niz·hār mil·lêṭ nap̄·šōw — WLC · 5

But if the watchman sees the sword coming and fails to blow the horn to warn the people, and the sword comes and takes away… a life, then that one will be taken away in his iniquity, but I will hold the watchman accountable for his blood…’

כִּֽי־ וְ֠הַצֹּפֶה יִרְאֶ֨ה אֶת־ הַחֶ֜רֶב בָּאָ֗ה וְלֹֽא־ תָקַ֤ע בַּשּׁוֹפָר֙ לֹֽא־ נִזְהָ֔ר וְהָעָ֣ם חֶ֔רֶב וַתָּב֣וֹא וַתִּקַּ֥ח מֵהֶ֖ם נָ֑פֶשׁ ה֚וּא נִלְקָ֔ח בַּעֲוֺנ֣וֹ הַצֹּפֶ֥ה אֶדְרֹֽשׁ׃ס וְדָמ֖וֹ מִיַּֽד־ kî- wə·haṣ·ṣō·p̄eh yir·’eh ’eṯ- ha·ḥe·reḇ bā·’āh wə·lō- ṯā·qa‘ baš·šō·w·p̄ār lō- niz·hār wə·hā·‘ām ḥe·reḇ wat·tā·ḇō·w wat·tiq·qaḥ mê·hem nā·p̄eš hū nil·qāḥ ba·‘ă·wō·nōw haṣ·ṣō·p̄eh ’eḏ·rōš wə·ḏā·mōw mî·yaḏ- — WLC · 6

As for you, O son of man, I have made you a watchman for the house of Israel; so hear the word from My mouth and give them the warning from Me
𐤅𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤁𐤍 𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤍𐤕𐤕𐤉𐤊 𐤑𐤐𐤄 𐤋𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤕 𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤌𐤌𐤍𐤉 𐤌𐤐𐤉 𐤅𐤄𐤆𐤄𐤓𐤕 𐤀𐤕𐤌
וְאַתָּ֣ה בֶן־ אָדָ֔ם נְתַתִּ֖יךָ צֹפֶ֥ה לְבֵ֣ית יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וְשָׁמַעְתָּ֤ דָּבָ֔ר מִמֶּֽנִּי׃ מִפִּי֙ וְהִזְהַרְתָּ֥ אֹתָ֖ם wə·’at·tāh ḇen- ’ā·ḏām nə·ṯat·tî·ḵā ṣō·p̄eh lə·ḇêṯ yiś·rā·’êl wə·šā·ma‘·tā dā·ḇār mim·men·nî mip·pî wə·hiz·har·tā ’ō·ṯām — WLC · 7

If I say to the wicked, ‘O wicked [man], you will surely die…,’ but you do not speak out to dissuade him from his way, then that wicked [man] will die in his iniquity, yet I will hold you accountable for… his blood.

בְּאָמְרִ֣י לָרָשָׁ֗ע רָשָׁע֙ מ֣וֹת תָּמ֔וּת וְלֹ֣א דִבַּ֔רְתָּ לְהַזְהִ֥יר רָשָׁ֖ע מִדַּרְכּ֑וֹ ה֤וּא רָשָׁע֙ יָמ֔וּת בַּעֲוֺנ֣וֹ מִיָּדְךָ֥ אֲבַקֵּֽשׁ׃ וְדָמ֖וֹ bə·’ā·mə·rî lā·rā·šā‘ rā·šā‘ mō·wṯ tā·mūṯ wə·lō ḏib·bar·tā lə·haz·hîr rā·šā‘ mid·dar·kōw hū rā·šā‘ yā·mūṯ ba·‘ă·wō·nōw mî·yā·ḏə·ḵā ’ă·ḇaq·qêš wə·ḏā·mōw — WLC · 8

But if you warn the wicked [man] to turn from his way, and he does not turn from it, he will die in his iniquity, but you will have saved your life.
𐤊𐤉 𐤅𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤄𐤆𐤄𐤓𐤕 𐤓𐤔𐤏 𐤋𐤔𐤅𐤁 𐤌𐤌𐤍𐤄 𐤌𐤃𐤓𐤊𐤅 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤔𐤁 𐤌𐤃𐤓𐤊𐤅 𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤉𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤁𐤏𐤅𐤍𐤅 𐤅𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤄𐤑𐤋𐤕𐤎 𐤍𐤐𐤔𐤊
כִּֽי־ וְ֠אַתָּה הִזְהַ֨רְתָּ רָשָׁ֤ע לָשׁ֣וּב מִמֶּ֔נָּה מִדַּרְכּוֹ֙ וְלֹא־ שָׁ֖ב מִדַּרְכּ֑וֹ ה֚וּא יָמ֔וּת בַּעֲוֺנ֣וֹ וְאַתָּ֖ה הִצַּֽלְתָּ׃ס נַפְשְׁךָ֥ kî- wə·’at·tāh hiz·har·tā rā·šā‘ lā·šūḇ mim·men·nāh mid·dar·kōw wə·lō- šāḇ mid·dar·kōw hū yā·mūṯ ba·‘ă·wō·nōw wə·’at·tāh hiṣ·ṣal·tā nap̄·šə·ḵā — WLC · 9
The Message of the Watchman

Now as for you, son of man, tell the house of Israel that this is what [they] have said…: ‘Our transgressions and our sins are heavy upon us, and we are wasting away because of them! How can we live?’
𐤅𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤁𐤍 𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤊𐤍 𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤕𐤌 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤊𐤉 𐤐𐤔𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤅𐤇𐤈𐤀𐤕𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤅𐤁𐤌 𐤀𐤍𐤇𐤍𐤅 𐤍𐤌𐤒𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤉𐤊 𐤍𐤇𐤉𐤄
וְאַתָּ֣ה בֶן־ אָדָ֗ם אֱמֹר֙ אֶל־ בֵּ֣ית יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל כֵּ֤ן אֲמַרְתֶּם֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר כִּֽי־ פְשָׁעֵ֥ינוּ וְחַטֹּאתֵ֖ינוּ עָלֵ֑ינוּ וּבָ֛ם אֲנַ֥חְנוּ נְמַקִּ֖ים וְאֵ֥יךְ נִֽחְיֶֽה׃ wə·’at·tāh ḇen- ’ā·ḏām ’ĕ·mōr ’el- bêṯ yiś·rā·’êl kên ’ă·mar·tem lê·mōr kî- p̄ə·šā·‘ê·nū wə·ḥaṭ·ṭō·ṯê·nū ‘ā·lê·nū ū·ḇām ’ă·naḥ·nū nə·maq·qîm wə·’êḵ niḥ·yeh — WLC · 10

Say to them: ‘As surely as I live, declares the Lord GOD, I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather… that the wicked should turn from their ways and live. Turn! Turn from your evil ways! For why should you die, O house of Israel?’

אֱמֹ֨ר אֲלֵיהֶ֜ם אָ֣נִי׀ חַי־ נְאֻ֣ם׀ אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֗ה אִם־ אֶחְפֹּץ֙ בְּמ֣וֹת הָרָשָׁ֔ע כִּ֣י אִם־ רָשָׁ֛ע בְּשׁ֥וּב מִדַּרְכּ֖וֹ וְחָיָ֑ה שׁ֣וּבוּ שׁ֜וּבוּ הָרָעִ֛ים מִדַּרְכֵיכֶ֧ם וְלָ֥מָּה תָמ֖וּתוּ בֵּ֥ית יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃פ ’ĕ·mōr ’ă·lê·hem ’ā·nî ḥay- nə·’um ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh ’im- ’eḥ·pōṣ bə·mō·wṯ hā·rā·šā‘ kî ’im- rā·šā‘ bə·šūḇ mid·dar·kōw wə·ḥā·yāh šū·ḇū šū·ḇū hā·rā·‘îm mid·dar·ḵê·ḵem wə·lām·māh ṯā·mū·ṯū bêṯ yiś·rā·’êl — WLC · 11

Therefore, son of man, say to your people…: ‘The righteousness of the righteous man will not deliver him in the day of his transgression; neither will the wickedness of the wicked man cause him to stumble on the day he turns from his wickedness. Nor will the righteous man be able to survive by his righteousness on the day he sins.’
𐤅𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤁𐤍 𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤏𐤌𐤊 𐤑𐤃𐤒𐤕 𐤄𐤑𐤃𐤉𐤒 𐤋𐤀 𐤕𐤑𐤉𐤋𐤍𐤅 𐤁𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤐𐤔𐤏𐤅 𐤋𐤀 𐤅𐤓𐤔𐤏𐤕 𐤄𐤓𐤔𐤏 𐤉𐤊𐤔𐤋 𐤁𐤄 𐤁𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤔𐤅𐤁𐤅 𐤌𐤓𐤔𐤏𐤅 𐤋𐤀 𐤅𐤑𐤃𐤉𐤒 𐤉𐤅𐤊𐤋 𐤋𐤇𐤉𐤅𐤕 𐤁𐤄 𐤁𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤇𐤈𐤀𐤕𐤅
וְאַתָּ֣ה בֶן־ אָדָ֗ם אֱמֹ֤ר אֶל־ בְּנֵֽי־ עַמְּךָ֙ צִדְקַ֣ת הַצַּדִּ֗יק לֹ֤א תַצִּילֶ֙נּוּ֙ בְּי֣וֹם פִּשְׁע֔וֹ לֹֽא־ וְרִשְׁעַ֤ת הָֽרָשָׁע֙ יִכָּ֣שֶׁל בָּ֔הּ בְּי֖וֹם שׁוּב֣וֹ מֵֽרִשְׁע֑וֹ לֹ֥א וְצַדִּ֗יק יוּכַ֛ל לִֽחְי֥וֹת בָּ֖הּ בְּי֥וֹם חֲטֹאתֽוֹ׃ wə·’at·tāh ḇen- ’ā·ḏām ’ĕ·mōr ’el- bə·nê- ‘am·mə·ḵā ṣiḏ·qaṯ haṣ·ṣad·dîq lō ṯaṣ·ṣî·len·nū bə·yō·wm piš·‘ōw lō- wə·riš·‘aṯ hā·rā·šā‘ yik·kā·šel bāh bə·yō·wm šū·ḇōw mê·riš·‘ōw lō wə·ṣad·dîq yū·ḵal liḥ·yō·wṯ bāh bə·yō·wm ḥă·ṭō·ṯōw — WLC · 12

If I tell the righteous man that he will surely live…, but he then trusts in his righteousness and commits iniquity, then none… of his righteous works will be remembered; he will die because of the iniquity he has committed
𐤁𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤉 𐤋𐤑𐤃𐤉𐤒 𐤇𐤉𐤄 𐤉𐤇𐤉𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤁𐤈𐤇 𐤏𐤋 𐤑𐤃𐤒𐤕𐤅 𐤅𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤏𐤅𐤋 𐤊𐤋 𐤋𐤀 𐤑𐤃𐤒𐤕𐤅 𐤕𐤆𐤊𐤓𐤍𐤄 𐤉𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤁𐤏𐤅𐤋𐤅 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤁𐤅
בְּאָמְרִ֤י לַצַּדִּיק֙ חָיֹ֣ה יִֽחְיֶ֔ה וְהֽוּא־ בָטַ֥ח עַל־ צִדְקָת֖וֹ וְעָ֣שָׂה עָ֑וֶל כָּל־ לֹ֣א צִדְקָתוֹ תִזָּכַ֔רְנָה יָמֽוּת׃ וּבְעַוְל֥וֹ אֲשֶׁר־ עָשָׂ֖ה בּ֥וֹ bə·’ā·mə·rî laṣ·ṣad·dîq ḥā·yōh yiḥ·yeh wə·hū- ḇā·ṭaḥ ‘al- ṣiḏ·qā·ṯōw wə·‘ā·śāh ‘ā·wel kāl- lō ṣiḏ·qå̄·ṯō ṯiz·zā·ḵar·nāh yā·mūṯ ū·ḇə·‘aw·lōw ’ă·šer- ‘ā·śāh bōw — WLC · 13

But if I tell the wicked man, ‘You will surely die…,’ and he turns from his sin and does what is just and right—
𐤅𐤁𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤉 𐤋𐤓𐤔𐤏 𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤕𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤔𐤁 𐤌𐤇𐤈𐤀𐤕𐤅 𐤅𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤌𐤔𐤐𐤈 𐤅𐤑𐤃𐤒𐤄
וּבְאָמְרִ֥י לָֽרָשָׁ֖ע מ֣וֹת תָּמ֑וּת וְשָׁב֙ מֵֽחַטָּאת֔וֹ וְעָשָׂ֥ה מִשְׁפָּ֖ט וּצְדָקָֽה׃ ū·ḇə·’ā·mə·rî lā·rā·šā‘ mō·wṯ tā·mūṯ wə·šāḇ mê·ḥaṭ·ṭā·ṯōw wə·‘ā·śāh miš·pāṭ ū·ṣə·ḏā·qāh — WLC · 14

if he restores a pledge, makes restitution for what he has stolen, and walks in the statutes of life without practicing iniquity— then he will surely live…; he will not die.

רָשָׁע֙ יָשִׁ֤יב חֲבֹ֨ל יְשַׁלֵּ֔ם גְּזֵלָ֣ה הָלַ֔ךְ בְּחֻקּ֤וֹת הַֽחַיִּים֙ לְבִלְתִּ֖י עֲשׂ֣וֹת עָ֑וֶל חָי֥וֹ יִֽחְיֶ֖ה לֹ֥א יָמֽוּת׃ rā·šā‘ yā·šîḇ ḥă·ḇōl yə·šal·lêm gə·zê·lāh hā·laḵ bə·ḥuq·qō·wṯ ha·ḥay·yîm lə·ḇil·tî ‘ă·śō·wṯ ‘ā·wel ḥā·yōw yiḥ·yeh lō yā·mūṯ — WLC · 15

None… of the sins he has committed will be held against him. He has done what is just and right; he will surely live…

If a righteous man turns from his righteousness and commits iniquity, he will die for it.

But if a wicked man turns from his wickedness and does what is just and right, he will live because of this.

- In the twelfth… year of our exile, on the fifth day of the tenth month, a fugitive from Jerusalem came to me and reported, “The city has been taken!”

Now the evening before the fugitive arrived, the hand of the LORD was upon me, and He opened my mouth before the man came to me in the morning. So my mouth was opened and I was no longer mute.

“Son of man, those living in the ruins in the land of Israel are saying,… ‘Abraham was only one man, yet he possessed the land. But we are many; [surely] the land has been given to us as a possession.’

Therefore tell them that this is what the Lord GOD… says: ‘You eat meat with the blood [in it], lift up your eyes to your idols, and shed blood. Should you then possess the land?

You have relied on your swords, you have committed detestable acts, and each of you has defiled his neighbor’s wife. Should you then possess the land?’

Tell them that this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘As surely as I… live, those in the ruins will fall by the sword, those in the open field… I will give to be devoured by wild animals, and those in the strongholds and caves will die by plague.

תֹאמַ֨ר אֲלֵהֶ֜ם כֹּֽה־ כֹּה־ אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִה֮ אָמַ֨ר אָנִי֒ אִם־ לֹ֞א חַי־ אֲשֶׁ֤ר בֶּֽחֳרָבוֹת֙ יִפֹּ֔לוּ בַּחֶ֣רֶב וַֽאֲשֶׁר֙ עַל־ פְּנֵ֣י הַשָּׂדֶ֔ה נְתַתִּ֖יו לְאָכְל֑וֹ לַחַיָּ֥ה וַאֲשֶׁ֛ר בַּמְּצָד֥וֹת וּבַמְּעָר֖וֹת יָמֽוּתוּ׃ בַּדֶּ֥בֶר ṯō·mar ’ă·lê·hem kōh- kōh- ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh ’ā·mar ’ā·nî ’im- lō ḥay- ’ă·šer be·ḥo·rā·ḇō·wṯ yip·pō·lū ba·ḥe·reḇ wa·’ă·šer ‘al- pə·nê haś·śā·ḏeh nə·ṯat·tîw lə·’ā·ḵə·lōw la·ḥay·yāh wa·’ă·šer bam·mə·ṣā·ḏō·wṯ ū·ḇam·mə·‘ā·rō·wṯ yā·mū·ṯū bad·de·ḇer — WLC · 27

I will make the land a desolate waste, and the pride of her strength will come to an end. The mountains of Israel will become desolate, so that no one will pass through.

Then they will know that I am the LORD, when I have made the land a desolate waste because of all the abominations they have committed.’

As for you, son of man, your people… are talking about you near the city walls and in the doorways of their houses. One… speaks to another, each saying to his brother, ‘Come… and hear the message that has come from the LORD!’

So My people come to you as usual,… sit before you, and hear your words; but they do not put them into practice. Although they express… love with their mouths, their hearts pursue dishonest gain.

Indeed, you [are] to them like a singer of love songs with a beautiful voice, who skillfully plays an instrument. They hear your words but do not put them into practice.

So when it comes to pass— and surely it will come— then they will know that a prophet has been among them.”
