Chapter 35
A Prophecy against Mount Seir
1
Moreover, the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓
דְבַר־ יְהוָ֖ה וַיְהִ֥י אֵלַ֥י לֵאמֹֽר׃ ḏə·ḇar- Yah·weh way·hî ’ê·lay lê·mōr — WLC · 1

“Son of man, set your face against Mount Seir and prophesy against it,
𐤁𐤍 𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤊 𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤓 𐤔𐤏𐤉𐤓 𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤁𐤀 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤅
בֶּן־ אָדָ֕ם שִׂ֥ים פָּנֶ֖יךָ עַל־ הַ֣ר שֵׂעִ֑יר וְהִנָּבֵ֖א עָלָֽיו׃ ben- ’ā·ḏām śîm pā·ne·ḵā ‘al- har śê·‘îr wə·hin·nā·ḇê ‘ā·lāw — WLC · 2

and declare… that this is what the Lord GOD says: Behold, I am against you, O Mount Seir. I will stretch out My hand against you and make you a desolate waste.

וְאָמַ֣רְתָּ לּ֗וֹ כֹּ֤ה אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֔ה אָמַר֙ הִנְנִ֥י אֵלֶ֖יךָ הַר־ שֵׂעִ֑יר וְנָטִ֤יתִי יָדִי֙ עָלֶ֔יךָ וּנְתַתִּ֖יךָ שְׁמָמָ֥ה וּמְשַׁמָּֽה׃ wə·’ā·mar·tā lōw kōh ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh ’ā·mar hin·nî ’ê·le·ḵā har- śê·‘îr wə·nā·ṭî·ṯî yā·ḏî ‘ā·le·ḵā ū·nə·ṯat·tî·ḵā šə·mā·māh ū·mə·šam·māh — WLC · 3

I will turn your cities into ruins, and you will become a desolation. Then you will know that I am the LORD.

עָרֶ֙יךָ֙ אָשִׂ֔ים חָרְבָּ֣ה וְאַתָּ֖ה תִֽהְיֶ֑ה שְׁמָמָ֣ה וְיָדַעְתָּ֖ כִּֽי־ אֲנִ֥י יְהוָֽה׃ ‘ā·re·ḵā ’ā·śîm ḥā·rə·bāh wə·’at·tāh ṯih·yeh šə·mā·māh wə·yā·ḏa‘·tā kî- ’ă·nî Yah·weh — WLC · 4

Because you harbored an ancient hatred and delivered the Israelites… over to… the sword in the time of their disaster at the final stage… of their punishment,
𐤉𐤏𐤍 𐤄𐤉𐤅𐤕 𐤋𐤊 𐤏𐤅𐤋𐤌 𐤀𐤉𐤁𐤕 𐤅𐤕𐤂𐤓 𐤀𐤕 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤏𐤋 𐤉𐤃𐤉 𐤇𐤓𐤁 𐤁𐤏𐤕 𐤀𐤉𐤃𐤌 𐤁𐤏𐤕 𐤒𐤑 𐤏𐤅𐤍
יַ֗עַן הֱי֤וֹת לְךָ֙ עוֹלָ֔ם אֵיבַ֣ת וַתַּגֵּ֥ר אֶת־ בְּנֵֽי־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל עַל־ יְדֵי־ חָ֑רֶב בְּעֵ֣ת אֵידָ֔ם בְּעֵ֖ת קֵֽץ׃ עֲוֺ֥ן ya·‘an hĕ·yō·wṯ lə·ḵā ‘ō·w·lām ’ê·ḇaṯ wat·tag·gêr ’eṯ- bə·nê- yiś·rā·’êl ‘al- yə·ḏê- ḥā·reḇ bə·‘êṯ ’ê·ḏām bə·‘êṯ qêṣ ‘ă·wōn — WLC · 5

therefore as surely as I live, declares the Lord GOD, I will give you over to bloodshed and [it] will pursue you. Since you did not hate bloodshed, it will pursue you.
𐤋𐤊𐤍 𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤇𐤉 𐤍𐤀𐤌 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤏𐤔𐤊 𐤋𐤃𐤌 𐤅𐤃𐤌 𐤉𐤓𐤃𐤐𐤊 𐤀𐤌 𐤋𐤀 𐤔𐤍𐤀𐤕 𐤃𐤌 𐤅𐤃𐤌 𐤉𐤓𐤃𐤐𐤊
לָכֵ֣ן אָ֗נִי חַי־ נְאֻם֙ אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֔ה כִּֽי־ אֶעֶשְׂךָ֖ לְדָ֥ם וְדָ֣ם יִרְדֲּפֶ֑ךָ אִם־ לֹ֥א שָׂנֵ֖אתָ דָ֛ם וְדָ֥ם יִרְדֲּפֶֽךָ׃ lā·ḵên ’ā·nî ḥay- nə·’um ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh kî- ’e·‘eś·ḵā lə·ḏām wə·ḏām yir·dă·p̄e·ḵā ’im- lō śā·nê·ṯā ḏām wə·ḏām yir·dă·p̄e·ḵā — WLC · 6

I will make Mount Seir a desolate waste and will cut off from it those who come and go.
𐤅𐤍𐤕𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤓 𐤔𐤏𐤉𐤓 𐤋𐤔𐤌𐤌𐤄 𐤅𐤔𐤌𐤌𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤊𐤓𐤕𐤉 𐤌𐤌𐤍𐤅 𐤅𐤔𐤁 𐤏𐤁𐤓
וְנָֽתַתִּי֙ אֶת־ הַ֣ר שֵׂעִ֔יר לְשִֽׁמְמָ֖ה וּשְׁמָמָ֑ה וְהִכְרַתִּ֥י מִמֶּ֖נּוּ וָשָֽׁב׃ עֹבֵ֥ר wə·nā·ṯat·tî ’eṯ- har śê·‘îr lə·šim·māh ū·šə·mā·māh wə·hiḵ·rat·tî mim·men·nū wā·šāḇ ‘ō·ḇêr — WLC · 7

I will fill its mountains with the slain; those killed by the sword will fall on your hills, in your valleys, and in all your ravines.
𐤅𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤓𐤉𐤅 𐤇𐤋𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤇𐤋𐤋𐤉 𐤇𐤓𐤁 𐤉𐤐𐤋𐤅 𐤁𐤄𐤌 𐤂𐤁𐤏𐤅𐤕𐤉𐤊 𐤅𐤂𐤀𐤅𐤕𐤉𐤊 𐤅𐤊𐤋 𐤀𐤐𐤉𐤒𐤉𐤊
וּמִלֵּאתִ֥י אֶת־ הָרָ֖יו חֲלָלָ֑יו חַלְלֵי־ חֶ֖רֶב יִפְּל֥וּ בָהֶֽם׃ גִּבְעוֹתֶ֤יךָ וְגֵאוֹתֶ֙יךָ֙ וְכָל־ אֲפִיקֶ֔יךָ ū·mil·lê·ṯî ’eṯ- hā·rāw ḥă·lā·lāw ḥal·lê- ḥe·reḇ yip·pə·lū ḇā·hem giḇ·‘ō·w·ṯe·ḵā wə·ḡê·’ō·w·ṯe·ḵā wə·ḵāl ’ă·p̄î·qe·ḵā — WLC · 8

I will make you a perpetual desolation, and your cities will not be inhabited. Then you will know that I am the LORD.
𐤀𐤕𐤍𐤊 𐤏𐤅𐤋𐤌 𐤔𐤌𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤏𐤓𐤉𐤊 𐤋𐤀 𐤕𐤉𐤔𐤁𐤍𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤃𐤏𐤕𐤌 𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄
אֶתֶּנְךָ֔ עוֹלָם֙ שִֽׁמְמ֤וֹת וְעָרֶ֖יךָ לֹ֣א תֵישַׁבְנָה וִֽידַעְתֶּ֖ם כִּֽי־ אֲנִ֥י יְהוָֽה׃ ’et·ten·ḵā ‘ō·w·lām šim·mō·wṯ wə·‘ā·re·ḵā lō ṯē·šaḇ·nå̄h wî·ḏa‘·tem kî- ’ă·nî Yah·weh — WLC · 9

Because you have said, ‘These two nations and countries will be ours, and we will possess them,’ even though the LORD was there,
𐤉𐤏𐤍 𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤊 𐤀𐤕 𐤔𐤍𐤉 𐤄𐤂𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤔𐤕𐤉 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑𐤅𐤕 𐤕𐤄𐤉𐤉𐤍𐤄 𐤋𐤉 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤔𐤍𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤔𐤌
יַ֣עַן אֲ֠מָרְךָ אֶת־ שְׁנֵ֨י הַגּוֹיִ֜ם וְאֶת־ שְׁתֵּ֧י הָאֲרָצ֛וֹת תִהְיֶ֖ינָה לִ֥י וִֽירַשְׁנ֑וּהָ וַֽיהוָ֖ה הָיָֽה׃ שָׁ֥ם ya·‘an ’ă·mā·rə·ḵā ’eṯ- šə·nê hag·gō·w·yim wə·’eṯ- šə·tê hā·’ă·rā·ṣō·wṯ ṯih·ye·nāh lî wî·raš·nū·hā Yah·weh hā·yāh šām — WLC · 10

therefore as surely as I live, declares the Lord GOD, I will treat you according to the anger and jealousy you showed in your hatred against them, and I will make Myself known among them when I judge you.
𐤋𐤊𐤍 𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤇𐤉 𐤍𐤀𐤌 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤏𐤔𐤉𐤕𐤉 𐤊𐤀𐤐𐤊 𐤅𐤊𐤒𐤍𐤀𐤕𐤊 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤏𐤔𐤉𐤕𐤄 𐤌𐤔𐤍𐤀𐤕𐤉𐤊 𐤁𐤌 𐤅𐤍𐤅𐤃𐤏𐤕𐤉 𐤁𐤌 𐤊𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤀𐤔𐤐𐤈𐤊
לָכֵ֣ן אָ֗נִי חַי־ נְאֻם֮ אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִה֒ וְעָשִׂ֗יתִי כְּאַפְּךָ֙ וּכְקִנְאָ֣תְךָ֔ אֲשֶׁ֣ר עָשִׂ֔יתָה מִשִּׂנְאָתֶ֖יךָ בָּ֑ם וְנוֹדַ֥עְתִּי בָ֖ם כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר אֶשְׁפְּטֶֽךָ׃ lā·ḵên ’ā·nî ḥay- nə·’um ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh wə·‘ā·śî·ṯî kə·’ap·pə·ḵā ū·ḵə·qin·’ā·ṯə·ḵā ’ă·šer ‘ā·śî·ṯāh miś·śin·’ā·ṯe·ḵā bām wə·nō·w·ḏa‘·tî ḇām ka·’ă·šer ’eš·pə·ṭe·ḵā — WLC · 11

Then you will know that I, the LORD, have heard every contemptuous word you uttered against the mountains of Israel when you said, ‘They are desolate; they are given to us to devour!’
𐤅𐤉𐤃𐤏𐤕 𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤕 𐤊𐤋 𐤍𐤀𐤑𐤅𐤕𐤉𐤊 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤕 𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤓𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤔𐤌𐤌𐤄 𐤍𐤕𐤍𐤅 𐤋𐤍𐤅 𐤋𐤀𐤊𐤋𐤄
וְֽיָדַעְתָּ֮ כִּֽי־ אֲנִ֣י יְהוָה֒ שָׁמַ֣עְתִּי׀ אֶת־ כָּל־ נָאָֽצוֹתֶ֗יךָ אֲשֶׁ֥ר אָמַ֛רְתָּ עַל־ הָרֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל לֵאמֹ֣ר׀ שָׁמֵמָה נִתְּנ֖וּ לָ֥נוּ לְאָכְלָֽה׃ wə·yā·ḏa‘·tā kî- ’ă·nî Yah·weh šā·ma‘·tî ’eṯ- kāl- nā·’ā·ṣō·w·ṯe·ḵā ’ă·šer ’ā·mar·tā ‘al- hā·rê yiś·rā·’êl lê·mōr šå̄·mē·må̄h nit·tə·nū lā·nū lə·’āḵ·lāh — WLC · 12

You boasted against Me with your mouth and multiplied your words against Me. I heard it Myself!
𐤅𐤕𐤂𐤃𐤉𐤋𐤅 𐤏𐤋𐤉 𐤁𐤐𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤏𐤕𐤓𐤕𐤌 𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤏𐤋𐤉 𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤕𐤉𐤎
וַתַּגְדִּ֤ילוּ עָלַי֙ בְּפִיכֶ֔ם וְהַעְתַּרְתֶּ֥ם דִּבְרֵיכֶ֑ם עָלַ֖י אֲנִ֖י שָׁמָֽעְתִּי׃ס wat·taḡ·dî·lū ‘ā·lay bə·p̄î·ḵem wə·ha‘·tar·tem diḇ·rê·ḵem ‘ā·lay ’ă·nî šā·mā·‘ə·tî — WLC · 13

This is what the Lord GOD says: While the whole earth rejoices, I will make you desolate.
𐤊𐤄 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤊𐤔𐤌𐤇 𐤀𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤋𐤊 𐤔𐤌𐤌𐤄
כֹּ֥ה אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֑ה אָמַ֖ר כָּל־ הָאָ֔רֶץ כִּשְׂמֹ֙חַ֙ אֶעֱשֶׂה־ לָּֽךְ׃ שְׁמָמָ֖ה kōh ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh ’ā·mar kāl- hā·’ā·reṣ kiś·mō·aḥ ’e·‘ĕ·śeh- lāḵ šə·mā·māh — WLC · 14

As you rejoiced when the inheritance of the house of Israel - became desolate, so will I do to you. You will become a desolation, O Mount Seir, and so will all of Edom -. Then they will know that I am the LORD.

כְּשִׂמְחָ֨תְךָ֜ לְנַחְלַ֧ת בֵּֽית־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל עַ֥ל אֲשֶׁר־ שָׁמֵ֖מָה כֵּ֣ן אֶעֱשֶׂה־ לָּ֑ךְ תִֽהְיֶ֤ה שְׁמָמָ֨ה הַר־ שֵׂעִיר֙ וְכָל־ אֱד֣וֹם כֻּלָּ֔הּ וְיָדְע֖וּ כִּֽי־ אֲנִ֥י יְהוָֽה׃פ kə·śim·ḥā·ṯə·ḵā lə·naḥ·laṯ bêṯ- yiś·rā·’êl ‘al ’ă·šer- šā·mê·māh kên ’e·‘ĕ·śeh- lāḵ ṯih·yeh šə·mā·māh har- śê·‘îr wə·ḵāl ’ĕ·ḏō·wm kul·lāh wə·yā·ḏə·‘ū kî- ’ă·nî Yah·weh — WLC · 15
