Chapter 41

Inside the Temple

1

Then [the man] brought me into the outer sanctuary and measured the side pillars [to be] six cubits wide on each side…

𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤉𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤄𐤉𐤊𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤌𐤃 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤀𐤉𐤋𐤉𐤌 𐤔𐤔 𐤀𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤓𐤇𐤁 𐤌𐤐𐤅 𐤅𐤔𐤔 𐤀𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤓𐤇𐤁 𐤌𐤐𐤅 𐤓𐤇𐤁 𐤄𐤀𐤄𐤋

וַיְבִיאֵ֖נִי אֶל־ הַהֵיכָ֑ל וַיָּ֣מָד אֶת־ הָאֵילִ֗ים שֵׁשׁ־ אַמּ֨וֹת רֹ֧חַב־ מִפּ֛וֹ וְשֵׁשׁ־ אַמּֽוֹת־ רֹ֥חַב מִפּ֖וֹ רֹ֥חַב הָאֹֽהֶל׃ way·ḇî·’ê·nî ’el- ha·hê·ḵāl way·yā·māḏ ’eṯ- hā·’ê·lîm šêš- ’am·mō·wṯ rō·ḥaḇ- mip·pōw wə·šêš- ’am·mō·wṯ- rō·ḥaḇ mip·pōw rō·ḥaḇ hā·’ō·helWLC · 1

The width of the entrance [was] ten cubits, and the sides of the entrance [were] five cubits on each side. He also measured the length [of the outer sanctuary] [to be] forty cubits, and the width [to be] twenty vvv cubits.

וְרֹ֣חַב הַפֶּתַח֮ עֶ֣שֶׂר אַמּוֹת֒ וְכִתְפ֣וֹת הַפֶּ֔תַח חָמֵ֤שׁ אַמּוֹת֙ מִפּ֔וֹ וְחָמֵ֥שׁ מִפּ֑וֹ וַיָּ֤מָד אָרְכּוֹ֙ אַרְבָּעִ֣ים אַמּ֖וֹת וְרֹ֖חַב עֶשְׂרִ֥ים אַמָּֽה׃ אַמָּ֔ה wə·rō·ḥaḇ hap·pe·ṯaḥ ‘e·śer ’am·mō·wṯ wə·ḵiṯ·p̄ō·wṯ hap·pe·ṯaḥ ḥā·mêš ’am·mō·wṯ mip·pōw wə·ḥā·mêš mip·pōw way·yā·māḏ ’ā·rə·kōw ’ar·bā·‘îm ’am·mō·wṯ wə·rō·ḥaḇ ‘eś·rîm ’am·māh ’am·māhWLC · 2

And he went into [the inner sanctuary] and measured the side pillars at the entrance [to be] two cubits [wide]. The entrance [was] six cubits [wide], [and the walls on each side] [were] seven cubits wide.

𐤅𐤁𐤀 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤌𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤌𐤃 𐤀𐤉𐤋 𐤄𐤐𐤕𐤇 𐤔𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤄𐤐𐤕𐤇 𐤔𐤔 𐤀𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤄𐤐𐤕𐤇 𐤔𐤁𐤏 𐤀𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤓𐤇𐤁

וּבָ֣א לִפְנִ֔ימָה וַיָּ֥מָד אֵֽיל־ הַפֶּ֖תַח שְׁתַּ֣יִם אַמּ֑וֹת וְהַפֶּ֙תַח֙ שֵׁ֣שׁ אַמּ֔וֹת הַפֶּ֖תַח שֶׁ֥בַע אַמּֽוֹת׃ וְרֹ֥חַב ū·ḇā lip̄·nî·māh way·yā·māḏ ’êl- hap·pe·ṯaḥ šə·ta·yim ’am·mō·wṯ wə·hap·pe·ṯaḥ šêš ’am·mō·wṯ hap·pe·ṯaḥ še·ḇa‘ ’am·mō·wṯ wə·rō·ḥaḇWLC · 3

Then he measured [the room] adjacent to… the inner sanctuary [to be] twenty cubits long [and] twenty cubits wide. And he said to me, “This is the Most Holy Place…

וַיָּ֨מָד אֶת־ אֶל־ פְּנֵ֣י הַֽהֵיכָ֑ל עֶשְׂרִ֣ים אַמָּ֗ה אָרְכּ֜וֹ עֶשְׂרִ֥ים אַמָּ֖ה וְרֹ֛חַב וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלַ֔י זֶ֖ה קֹ֥דֶשׁ הַקֳּדָשִֽׁים׃ way·yā·māḏ ’eṯ- ’el- pə·nê ha·hê·ḵāl ‘eś·rîm ’am·māh ’ā·rə·kōw ‘eś·rîm ’am·māh wə·rō·ḥaḇ way·yō·mer ’ê·lay zeh qō·ḏeš haq·qo·ḏā·šîmWLC · 4

Outside the Temple

Next he measured the wall of the temple [to be] six cubits [thick], and the width of each side room around… the temple [was] four cubits.

𐤅𐤉𐤌𐤃 𐤒𐤉𐤓 𐤄𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤔𐤔 𐤀𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤓𐤇𐤁 𐤎𐤁𐤉𐤁 𐤄𐤑𐤋𐤏 𐤎𐤁𐤉𐤁 𐤎𐤁𐤉𐤁 𐤋𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤀𐤓𐤁𐤏 𐤀𐤌𐤅𐤕

וַיָּ֥מָד קִֽיר־ הַבַּ֖יִת שֵׁ֣שׁ אַמּ֑וֹת וְרֹ֣חַב סָבִֽיב׃ הַצֵּלָע֩ סָבִ֧יב׀ סָבִ֛יב לַבַּ֖יִת אַרְבַּ֨ע אַמּ֜וֹת way·yā·māḏ qîr- hab·ba·yiṯ šêš ’am·mō·wṯ wə·rō·ḥaḇ sā·ḇîḇ haṣ·ṣê·lā‘ sā·ḇîḇ sā·ḇîḇ lab·ba·yiṯ ’ar·ba‘ ’am·mō·wṯWLC · 5

The side rooms were arranged one above another in three levels of thirty rooms each… There were ledges all around… the wall of the temple to serve as supports for the side rooms, so that the supports would not be [fastened] into the wall of the temple itself.

𐤅𐤄𐤑𐤋𐤏𐤅𐤕 𐤑𐤋𐤏 𐤀𐤋 𐤑𐤋𐤏 𐤔𐤋𐤅𐤔 𐤅𐤔𐤋𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤐𐤏𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤁𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤎𐤁𐤉𐤁 𐤎𐤁𐤉𐤁 𐤁𐤒𐤉𐤓 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤋𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤇𐤅𐤆𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤑𐤋𐤏𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤇𐤅𐤆𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤄𐤉𐤅 𐤁𐤒𐤉𐤓 𐤄𐤁𐤉𐤕

וְהַצְּלָעוֹת֩ צֵלָ֨ע אֶל־ צֵלָ֜ע שָׁל֧וֹשׁ וּשְׁלֹשִׁ֣ים פְּעָמִ֗ים וּ֠בָאוֹת סָבִ֥יב׀ סָבִ֖יב בַּקִּ֨יר אֲשֶׁר־ לַבַּ֧יִת לִהְי֣וֹת אֲחוּזִ֑ים לַצְּלָע֛וֹת אֲחוּזִ֖ים וְלֹֽא־ יִהְי֥וּ בְּקִ֥יר הַבָּֽיִת׃ wə·haṣ·ṣə·lā·‘ō·wṯ ṣê·lā‘ ’el- ṣê·lā‘ šā·lō·wōš ū·šə·lō·šîm pə·‘ā·mîm ū·ḇā·’ō·wṯ sā·ḇîḇ sā·ḇîḇ baq·qîr ’ă·šer- lab·ba·yiṯ lih·yō·wṯ ’ă·ḥū·zîm laṣ·ṣə·lā·‘ō·wṯ ’ă·ḥū·zîm wə·lō- yih·yū bə·qîr hab·bā·yiṯWLC · 6

The side rooms… surrounding the temple widened at each successive level…,… because the structure surrounding… the temple ascended by stages corresponding to… the narrowing of the temple wall… as it rose upward. And so a stairway went up from the lowest story to the highest, through the middle one.

𐤋𐤑𐤋𐤏𐤅𐤕 𐤊𐤉 𐤌𐤅𐤎𐤁 𐤄𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤅𐤓𐤇𐤁𐤄 𐤅𐤍𐤎𐤁𐤄 𐤋𐤌𐤏𐤋𐤄 𐤋𐤌𐤏𐤋𐤄 𐤎𐤁𐤉𐤁 𐤎𐤁𐤉𐤁 𐤋𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤋𐤌𐤏𐤋𐤄 𐤋𐤌𐤏𐤋𐤄 𐤏𐤋 𐤊𐤍 𐤓𐤇𐤁 𐤋𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤋𐤌𐤏𐤋𐤄 𐤅𐤊𐤍 𐤉𐤏𐤋𐤄 𐤄𐤕𐤇𐤕𐤅𐤍𐤄 𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤅𐤍𐤄 𐤋𐤕𐤉𐤊𐤅𐤍𐤄

לַצְּלָע֗וֹת כִּ֣י מֽוּסַב־ הַ֠בַּיִת וְֽרָחֲבָ֡ה וְֽנָסְבָה֩ לְמַ֨עְלָה לְמַ֜עְלָה סָבִ֤יב׀ סָבִיב֙ לַבַּ֔יִת לְמַ֨עְלָה לְמַ֜עְלָה עַל־ כֵּ֥ן רֹֽחַב־ לַבַּ֖יִת לְמָ֑עְלָה וְכֵ֧ן יַעֲלֶ֥ה הַתַּחְתּוֹנָ֛ה עַל־ הָעֶלְיוֹנָ֖ה לַתִּיכוֹנָֽה׃ laṣ·ṣə·lā·‘ō·wṯ kî mū·saḇ- hab·ba·yiṯ wə·rā·ḥă·ḇāh wə·nā·sə·ḇāh lə·ma‘·lāh lə·ma‘·lāh sā·ḇîḇ sā·ḇîḇ lab·ba·yiṯ lə·ma‘·lāh lə·ma‘·lāh ‘al- kên rō·ḥaḇ- lab·ba·yiṯ lə·mā·‘ə·lāh wə·ḵên ya·‘ă·leh hat·taḥ·tō·w·nāh ‘al- hā·‘el·yō·w·nāh lat·tî·ḵō·w·nāhWLC · 7

I saw that the temple had a raised base all around [it], forming the foundation of the side rooms. It was the full length of a rod, six long cubits.

𐤅𐤓𐤀𐤉𐤕𐤉 𐤋𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤂𐤁𐤄 𐤎𐤁𐤉𐤁 𐤎𐤁𐤉𐤁 𐤌𐤉𐤎𐤃𐤅𐤕 𐤄𐤑𐤋𐤏𐤅𐤕 𐤌𐤋𐤅 𐤄𐤒𐤍𐤄 𐤔𐤔 𐤀𐤑𐤉𐤋𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤅𐤕

וְרָאִ֧יתִי לַבַּ֛יִת גֹּ֖בַהּ סָבִ֣יב׀ סָבִ֑יב מְיֻסְּדוֹת הַצְּלָעוֹת֙ מְל֣וֹ הַקָּנֶ֔ה שֵׁ֥שׁ אַצִּֽילָה׃ אַמּ֖וֹת wə·rā·’î·ṯî lab·ba·yiṯ gō·ḇah sā·ḇîḇ sā·ḇîḇ mə·yus·sə·ḏōṯ haṣ·ṣə·lā·‘ō·wṯ mə·lōw haq·qā·neh šêš ’aṣ·ṣî·lāh ’am·mō·wṯWLC · 8

The outer wall of the side rooms [was] five cubits thick, and the open area between the side rooms of the temple

𐤄𐤇𐤅𐤑 𐤄𐤒𐤉𐤓 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤋𐤑𐤋𐤏 𐤀𐤋 𐤇𐤌𐤔 𐤀𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤓𐤇𐤁 𐤅𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤌𐤍𐤇 𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤑𐤋𐤏𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤋𐤁𐤉𐤕

הַח֖וּץ הַקִּ֧יר אֲ‍ֽשֶׁר־ לַצֵּלָ֛ע אֶל־ חָמֵ֣שׁ אַמּ֑וֹת רֹ֣חַב וַאֲשֶׁ֣ר מֻנָּ֔ח בֵּ֥ית צְלָע֖וֹת אֲשֶׁ֥ר לַבָּֽיִת׃ ha·ḥūṣ haq·qîr ’ăšer- laṣ·ṣê·lā‘ ’el- ḥā·mêš ’am·mō·wṯ rō·ḥaḇ wa·’ă·šer mun·nāḥ bêṯ ṣə·lā·‘ō·wṯ ’ă·šer lab·bā·yiṯWLC · 9

  • and the outer chambers [was] twenty cubits wide all around… the temple.

𐤅𐤁𐤉𐤍 𐤄𐤋𐤔𐤊𐤅𐤕 𐤏𐤔𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤌𐤄 𐤓𐤇𐤁 𐤎𐤁𐤉𐤁 𐤎𐤁𐤉𐤁 𐤎𐤁𐤉𐤁 𐤋𐤁𐤉𐤕

וּבֵ֨ין הַלְּשָׁכ֜וֹת עֶשְׂרִ֥ים אַמָּ֛ה רֹ֣חַב סָבִ֥יב סָבִ֥יב׀ סָבִֽיב׃ לַבַּ֖יִת ū·ḇên hal·lə·šā·ḵō·wṯ ‘eś·rîm ’am·māh rō·ḥaḇ sā·ḇîḇ sā·ḇîḇ sā·ḇîḇ lab·ba·yiṯWLC · 10

The side rooms opened into this area,… with one entrance on the north… and another on the south. The open area… [was] five cubits wide all around.

𐤄𐤑𐤋𐤏 𐤋𐤌𐤍𐤇 𐤐𐤕𐤇 𐤀𐤇𐤃 𐤅𐤐𐤕𐤇 𐤃𐤓𐤊 𐤄𐤑𐤐𐤅𐤍 𐤅𐤐𐤕𐤇 𐤀𐤇𐤃 𐤋𐤃𐤓𐤅𐤌 𐤌𐤒𐤅𐤌 𐤄𐤌𐤍𐤇 𐤇𐤌𐤔 𐤀𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤓𐤇𐤁 𐤎𐤁𐤉𐤁 𐤎𐤁𐤉𐤁

הַצֵּלָע֙ לַמֻּנָּ֔ח פֶּ֤תַח אֶחָד֙ וּפֶ֤תַח דֶּ֣רֶךְ הַצָּפ֔וֹן וּפֶ֥תַח אֶחָ֖ד לַדָּר֑וֹם מְק֣וֹם הַמֻּנָּ֔ח חָמֵ֥שׁ אַמּ֖וֹת וְרֹ֙חַב֙ סָבִ֥יב׀ סָבִֽיב׃ haṣ·ṣê·lā‘ lam·mun·nāḥ pe·ṯaḥ ’e·ḥāḏ ū·p̄e·ṯaḥ de·reḵ haṣ·ṣā·p̄ō·wn ū·p̄e·ṯaḥ ’e·ḥāḏ lad·dā·rō·wm mə·qō·wm ham·mun·nāḥ ḥā·mêš ’am·mō·wṯ wə·rō·ḥaḇ sā·ḇîḇ sā·ḇîḇWLC · 11

Now the building that faced… the temple courtyard… on the west [was] seventy cubits wide, and the wall of the building [was] five cubits thick all around, with a length of ninety cubits.

𐤅𐤄𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤍 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤄𐤂𐤆𐤓𐤄 𐤐𐤀𐤕 𐤃𐤓𐤊 𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤔𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤌𐤄 𐤓𐤇𐤁 𐤅𐤒𐤉𐤓 𐤄𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤍 𐤇𐤌𐤔 𐤀𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤓𐤇𐤁 𐤎𐤁𐤉𐤁 𐤎𐤁𐤉𐤁 𐤅𐤀𐤓𐤊𐤅 𐤕𐤔𐤏𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤌𐤄

וְהַבִּנְיָ֡ן אֲשֶׁר֩ אֶל־ פְּנֵ֨י הַגִּזְרָ֜ה פְּאַ֣ת דֶּֽרֶךְ־ הַיָּ֗ם שִׁבְעִ֣ים אַמָּ֔ה רֹ֚חַב וְקִ֧יר הַבִּנְיָ֛ן חָֽמֵשׁ־ אַמּ֥וֹת רֹ֖חַב סָבִ֣יב׀ סָבִ֑יב וְאָרְכּ֖וֹ תִּשְׁעִ֥ים אַמָּֽה׃ wə·hab·bin·yān ’ă·šer ’el- pə·nê hag·giz·rāh pə·’aṯ de·reḵ- hay·yām šiḇ·‘îm ’am·māh rō·ḥaḇ wə·qîr hab·bin·yān ḥā·mêš- ’am·mō·wṯ rō·ḥaḇ sā·ḇîḇ sā·ḇîḇ wə·’ā·rə·kōw tiš·‘îm ’am·māhWLC · 12

Then he measured the temple [to be] a hundred cubits long, and the temple courtyard and the building with its walls [were] also a hundred cubits long.

𐤅𐤌𐤃𐤃 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤌𐤀𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤄 𐤀𐤓𐤊 𐤅𐤄𐤂𐤆𐤓𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤄 𐤅𐤒𐤉𐤓𐤅𐤕𐤉𐤄 𐤌𐤀𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤄 𐤀𐤓𐤊

וּמָדַ֣ד אֶת־ הַבַּ֔יִת מֵאָ֣ה אַמָּ֑ה אֹ֖רֶךְ וְהַגִּזְרָ֤ה וְהַבִּנְיָה֙ וְקִ֣ירוֹתֶ֔יהָ מֵאָ֥ה אַמָּֽה׃ אֹ֖רֶךְ ū·mā·ḏaḏ ’eṯ- hab·ba·yiṯ mê·’āh ’am·māh ’ō·reḵ wə·hag·giz·rāh wə·hab·bin·yāh wə·qî·rō·w·ṯe·hā mê·’āh ’am·māh ’ō·reḵWLC · 13

The width of the temple courtyard on the east, including the front of the temple, [was] a hundred cubits.

וְרֹחַב֩ וְהַגִּזְרָ֛ה לַקָּדִ֖ים פְּנֵ֨י הַבַּ֧יִת מֵאָ֥ה אַמָּֽה׃ wə·rō·ḥaḇ wə·hag·giz·rāh laq·qā·ḏîm pə·nê hab·ba·yiṯ mê·’āh ’am·māhWLC · 14

The Interior Structures

Next he measured the length of the building facing… the temple courtyard at the rear [of the temple], including its galleries on each side;… it was a hundred cubits. The outer sanctuary, the inner sanctuary, and the porticoes facing the court,

𐤅𐤌𐤃𐤃 𐤀𐤓𐤊 𐤄𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤍 𐤀𐤋 𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤄𐤂𐤆𐤓𐤄 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤏𐤋 𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤉𐤄 𐤅𐤀𐤕𐤅𐤒𐤉𐤄𐤀 𐤌𐤐𐤅 𐤅𐤌𐤐𐤅 𐤌𐤀𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤄𐤉𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤌𐤉 𐤅𐤀𐤋𐤌𐤉 𐤄𐤇𐤑𐤓

וּמָדַ֣ד אֹֽרֶךְ־ הַ֠בִּנְיָן אֶל־ פְּנֵ֨י הַגִּזְרָ֜ה אֲשֶׁ֨ר עַל־ אַחֲרֶ֧יהָ וְאַתּוּקֵיהָא מִפּ֥וֹ וּמִפּ֖וֹ מֵאָ֣ה אַמָּ֑ה וְהַֽהֵיכָל֙ הַפְּנִימִ֔י וְאֻֽלַמֵּ֖י הֶחָצֵֽר׃ ū·mā·ḏaḏ ’ō·reḵ- hab·bin·yān ’el- pə·nê hag·giz·rāh ’ă·šer ‘al- ’a·ḥă·re·hā wə·ʾat·tū·qē·hå̄ mip·pōw ū·mip·pōw mê·’āh ’am·māh wə·ha·hê·ḵāl hap·pə·nî·mî wə·’u·lam·mê he·ḥā·ṣêrWLC · 15

as well as the thresholds and the beveled windows and the galleries all around with their three levels opposite the threshold, were overlaid with wood on all sides… They were paneled from the ground to the windows, and the windows were covered.

In the space above… the outside of the entrance to the inner sanctuary on all the walls, spaced evenly around… the inner and outer sanctuary,

were alternating… carved cherubim and palm trees. Each cherub had two faces…:

the face of a man [was] toward the palm tree on one side, and the face of a young lion [was] toward the palm tree on the other side. They were carved all the way around… the temple.

Cherubim and palm trees were carved on the wall of the outer sanctuary from the floor to the space above the entrance.

The outer sanctuary had a rectangular doorframe, and the [doorframe] of the sanctuary vvv was similar.

There was an altar of wood three cubits high and two cubits [square]. Its corners, base, and sides [were] of wood. And the man told me, “This is the table that is before the LORD.”

Both the outer sanctuary and the inner sanctuary had double doors,

לַֽהֵיכָ֖ל וְלַקֹּֽדֶשׁ׃ וּשְׁתַּ֧יִם דְּלָת֛וֹת la·hê·ḵāl wə·laq·qō·ḏeš ū·šə·ta·yim də·lā·ṯō·wṯWLC · 23

and each door had two swinging panels. There were two panels for one door and two… for the other.

Cherubim and palm trees like those on the walls were carved on the doors of the outer sanctuary, and there was a wooden canopy outside, on the front of the portico.

There were beveled windows and palm trees vvv… on the sidewalls of the portico. The side rooms of the temple also had canopies.
