Chapter 47
Waters from under the Temple
1
Then [the man] brought me back to the entrance of the temple, and I saw water flowing from under the threshold of the temple toward the east (for the temple faced east). The water was coming down from under the south side of the temple, south of the altar.
𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤋 𐤐𐤕𐤇 𐤄𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤑𐤀𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤕𐤇𐤕 𐤌𐤐𐤕𐤍 𐤄𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤒𐤃𐤉𐤌𐤄 𐤊𐤉 𐤄𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤒𐤃𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤓𐤃𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤕𐤇𐤕 𐤄𐤉𐤌𐤍𐤉𐤕 𐤌𐤊𐤕𐤐 𐤄𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤌𐤍𐤂𐤁 𐤋𐤌𐤆𐤁𐤇
וַיְשִׁבֵנִי֮ אֶל־ פֶּ֣תַח הַבַּיִת֒ וְהִנֵּה־ מַ֣יִם יֹצְאִ֗ים מִתַּ֨חַת מִפְתַּ֤ן הַבַּ֙יִת֙ קָדִ֔ימָה כִּֽי־ הַבַּ֖יִת פְנֵ֥י קָדִ֑ים וְהַמַּ֣יִם יֹרְדִ֗ים מִתַּ֜חַת הַיְמָנִ֔ית מִכֶּ֤תֶף הַבַּ֙יִת֙ מִנֶּ֖גֶב לַמִּזְבֵּֽחַ׃ way·ši·ḇê·nî ’el- pe·ṯaḥ hab·ba·yiṯ wə·hin·nêh- ma·yim yō·ṣə·’îm mit·ta·ḥaṯ mip̄·tan hab·ba·yiṯ qā·ḏî·māh kî- hab·ba·yiṯ p̄ə·nê qā·ḏîm wə·ham·ma·yim yō·rə·ḏîm mit·ta·ḥaṯ hay·mā·nîṯ mik·ke·ṯep̄ hab·ba·yiṯ min·ne·ḡeḇ lam·miz·bê·aḥ — WLC · 1

Next he brought me out through the north gate and led me around… the outside to the outer… gate facing east, and there I saw the water trickling out from the south side.

וַיּוֹצִאֵנִי֮ דֶּֽרֶךְ־ צָפוֹנָה֒ שַׁ֣עַר וַיְסִבֵּ֙נִי֙ דֶּ֣רֶךְ ח֔וּץ אֶל־ הַח֔וּץ דֶּ֖רֶךְ שַׁ֣עַר הַפּוֹנֶ֣ה קָדִ֑ים וְהִנֵּה־ מַ֣יִם מְפַכִּ֔ים מִן־ הַיְמָנִֽית׃ הַכָּתֵ֖ף way·yō·w·ṣi·’ê·nî de·reḵ- ṣā·p̄ō·w·nāh ša·‘ar way·sib·bê·nî de·reḵ ḥūṣ ’el- ha·ḥūṣ de·reḵ ša·‘ar hap·pō·w·neh qā·ḏîm wə·hin·nêh- ma·yim mə·p̄ak·kîm min- hay·mā·nîṯ hak·kā·ṯêp̄ — WLC · 2

As the man went eastward with a measuring line in his hand, he measured off a thousand cubits and led me through ankle-deep water.

הָאִ֥ישׁ בְּצֵאת־ קָדִ֖ים וְקָ֣ו בְּיָד֑וֹ וַיָּ֤מָד אֶ֙לֶף֙ בָּֽאַמָּ֔ה וַיַּעֲבִרֵ֥נִי מֵ֥י אָפְסָֽיִם׃ בַמַּ֖יִם hā·’îš bə·ṣêṯ- qā·ḏîm wə·qāw bə·yā·ḏōw way·yā·māḏ ’e·lep̄ bā·’am·māh way·ya·‘ă·ḇi·rê·nî mê ’ā·p̄ə·sā·yim ḇam·ma·yim — WLC · 3

Then he measured off a thousand [cubits] and led me through knee-deep water vvv. Again he measured a thousand [cubits] and led me through waist-deep water.

וַיָּ֣מָד אֶ֔לֶף וַיַּעֲבִרֵ֥נִי בִּרְכָּ֑יִם בַמַּ֖יִם מַ֣יִם וַיָּ֣מָד אֶ֔לֶף וַיַּעֲבִרֵ֖נִי מָתְנָֽיִם׃ מֵ֥י way·yā·māḏ ’e·lep̄ way·ya·‘ă·ḇi·rê·nî bir·kā·yim ḇam·ma·yim ma·yim way·yā·māḏ ’e·lep̄ way·ya·‘ă·ḇi·rê·nî mā·ṯə·nā·yim mê — WLC · 4

Once again he measured off a thousand [cubits], but now it was a river that I could not cross, because the water had risen [and] was deep enough for swimming— a river that could not be crossed on foot.

וַיָּ֣מָד אֶ֔לֶף נַ֕חַל אֲשֶׁ֥ר אוּכַ֖ל לֹֽא־ לַעֲבֹ֑ר כִּֽי־ הַמַּ֙יִם֙ גָא֤וּ מֵ֣י שָׂ֔חוּ נַ֖חַל אֲשֶׁ֥ר לֹֽא־ יֵעָבֵֽר׃ way·yā·māḏ ’e·lep̄ na·ḥal ’ă·šer ’ū·ḵal lō- la·‘ă·ḇōr kî- ham·ma·yim ḡā·’ū mê śā·ḥū na·ḥal ’ă·šer lō- yê·‘ā·ḇêr — WLC · 5

“Son of man, do you see this?” he asked… Then he led me back to the bank of the river.

בֶן־ אָדָ֑ם הֲרָאִ֣יתָ וַיֹּ֥אמֶר אֵלַ֖י וַיּוֹלִכֵ֥נִי וַיְשִׁבֵ֖נִי שְׂפַ֥ת הַנָּֽחַל׃ ḇen- ’ā·ḏām hă·rā·’î·ṯā way·yō·mer ’ê·lay way·yō·w·li·ḵê·nî way·ši·ḇê·nî śə·p̄aṯ han·nā·ḥal — WLC · 6

When I arrived, I saw… a great number of trees along both… banks of the river.

בְּשׁוּבֵ֕נִי וְהִנֵּה֙ אֶל־ מְאֹ֑ד רַ֣ב עֵ֖ץ מִזֶּ֖ה וּמִזֶּֽה׃ שְׂפַ֣ת הַנַּ֔חַל bə·šū·ḇê·nî wə·hin·nêh ’el- mə·’ōḏ raḇ ‘êṣ miz·zeh ū·miz·zeh śə·p̄aṯ han·na·ḥal — WLC · 7

And he said to me, “This water flows out to the eastern region and goes down into the Arabah. When it empties into the [Dead] Sea, vvv… the water there becomes fresh.
𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤄𐤀𐤋𐤄 𐤄𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤅𐤑𐤀𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤒𐤃𐤌𐤅𐤍𐤄 𐤄𐤂𐤋𐤉𐤋𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤃𐤅 𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤏𐤓𐤁𐤄 𐤅𐤁𐤀𐤅 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤉𐤌𐤄 𐤄𐤉𐤌𐤄 𐤄𐤌𐤅𐤑𐤀𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤍𐤓𐤐𐤀𐤅
וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלַ֗י הָאֵ֙לֶּה֙ הַמַּ֤יִם יוֹצְאִ֗ים אֶל־ הַקַּדְמוֹנָ֔ה הַגְּלִילָה֙ וְיָרְד֖וּ עַל־ הָֽעֲרָבָ֑ה וּבָ֣אוּ אֶל־ הַיָּ֔מָּה הַיָּ֥מָּה הַמּֽוּצָאִ֖ים הַמָּֽיִם׃ וְנִרְפְּאוּ way·yō·mer ’ê·lay hā·’êl·leh ham·ma·yim yō·wṣ·’îm ’el- haq·qaḏ·mō·w·nāh hag·gə·lî·lāh wə·yā·rə·ḏū ‘al- hā·‘ă·rā·ḇāh ū·ḇā·’ū ’el- hay·yām·māh hay·yām·māh ham·mū·ṣā·’îm ham·mā·yim wə·nir·pə·ʾū — WLC · 8

Wherever… the river flows, there will be vvv vvv swarms of living creatures [and] a great number of… fish, because [it] flows there and makes the waters fresh; so wherever the river flows, everything will flourish.

אֶ֣ל כָּל־ אֲשֶׁר֩ נַחֲלַ֙יִם֙ שָׁ֤ם יָב֨וֹא וְהָיָ֣ה כָל־ אֲֽשֶׁר־ יִשְׁרֹ֡ץ נֶ֣פֶשׁ חַיָּ֣ה׀ יִֽחְיֶ֔ה וְהָיָ֥ה רַבָּ֣ה מְאֹ֑ד הַדָּגָ֖ה כִּי֩ הָאֵ֗לֶּה הַמַּ֣יִם בָ֨אוּ שָׁ֜מָּה וְיֵרָֽפְאוּ֙ אֲשֶׁר־ הַנָּֽחַל׃ יָ֥בוֹא כֹּ֛ל שָׁ֖מָּה וָחָ֔י ’el kāl- ’ă·šer na·ḥă·la·yim šām yā·ḇō·w wə·hā·yāh ḵāl ’ăšer- yiš·rōṣ ne·p̄eš ḥay·yāh yiḥ·yeh wə·hā·yāh rab·bāh mə·’ōḏ had·dā·ḡāh kî hā·’êl·leh ham·ma·yim ḇā·’ū šām·māh wə·yê·rā·p̄ə·’ū ’ă·šer- han·nā·ḥal yā·ḇō·w kōl šām·māh wā·ḥāy — WLC · 9

Fishermen will stand by the shore; from En-gedi to vvv En-eglaim they will spread their nets [to catch] fish of many… kinds,… like the fish of the Great Sea.
𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤃𐤅𐤂𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤏𐤉𐤍 𐤉𐤏𐤌𐤃𐤅 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤂𐤃𐤉 𐤅𐤏𐤃 𐤏𐤉𐤍 𐤏𐤂𐤋𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤄𐤉𐤅 𐤌𐤔𐤈𐤅𐤇 𐤋𐤇𐤓𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤃𐤂𐤕𐤌 𐤓𐤁𐤄 𐤌𐤀𐤃 𐤋𐤌𐤉𐤍𐤄 𐤕𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤊𐤃𐤂𐤕 𐤄𐤂𐤃𐤅𐤋 𐤄𐤉𐤌
וְהָיָה֩ דַּוָּגִ֗ים מֵעֵ֥ין יַעַמְדוּ עָלָ֜יו גֶּ֙דִי֙ וְעַד־ עֵ֣ין עֶגְלַ֔יִם יִהְי֑וּ מִשְׁט֥וֹחַ לַֽחֲרָמִ֖ים דְגָתָ֔ם רַבָּ֥ה מְאֹֽד׃ לְמִינָה֙ תִּהְיֶ֣ה כִּדְגַ֛ת הַגָּד֖וֹל הַיָּ֥ם wə·hā·yāh daw·wā·ḡîm mê·‘ên ya·ʿam·ḏū ‘ā·lāw ge·ḏî wə·‘aḏ- ‘ên ‘eḡ·la·yim yih·yū miš·ṭō·w·aḥ la·ḥă·rā·mîm ḏə·ḡā·ṯām rab·bāh mə·’ōḏ lə·mî·nāh tih·yeh kiḏ·ḡaṯ hag·gā·ḏō·wl hay·yām — WLC · 10

But the swamps and marshes will not become fresh; they will be left for salt.
𐤁𐤑𐤀𐤕𐤅 𐤅𐤂𐤁𐤀𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤓𐤐𐤀𐤅 𐤍𐤕𐤍𐤅 𐤋𐤌𐤋𐤇
בִּצֹּאתוֹ וּגְבָאָ֛יו וְלֹ֥א יֵרָפְא֖וּ נִתָּֽנוּ׃ לְמֶ֥לַח biṣ·ṣō·ṯō ū·ḡə·ḇā·’āw wə·lō yê·rā·p̄ə·’ū nit·tā·nū lə·me·laḥ — WLC · 11

Along… both… banks of the river, fruit trees of all kinds will grow. Their leaves will not wither, and their fruit will not fail. Each month they will bear fruit, because the water from the sanctuary flows to them… Their fruit will be used for food and their leaves for healing.”

וְעַל־ עַל־ מִזֶּ֣ה׀ וּמִזֶּ֣ה׀ שְׂפָת֣וֹ הַנַּ֣חַל מַ֠אֲכָל עֵֽץ־ כָּל־ יַעֲלֶ֣ה עָלֵ֜הוּ לֹא־ יִבּ֨וֹל פִּרְי֗וֹ וְלֹֽא־ יִתֹּ֣ם לָֽחֳדָשָׁיו֙ יְבַכֵּ֔ר כִּ֣י מֵימָ֔יו מִן־ הַמִּקְדָּ֖שׁ יֽוֹצְאִ֑ים הֵ֣מָּה פִרְיוֹ֙ וְהָיוּ לְמַֽאֲכָ֔ל וְעָלֵ֖הוּ לִתְרוּפָֽה׃ס wə·‘al- ‘al- miz·zeh ū·miz·zeh śə·p̄ā·ṯōw han·na·ḥal ma·’ă·ḵāl ‘êṣ- kāl- ya·‘ă·leh ‘ā·lê·hū lō- yib·bō·wl pir·yōw wə·lō- yit·tōm lā·ḥo·ḏā·šāw yə·ḇak·kêr kî mê·māw min- ham·miq·dāš yō·wṣ·’îm hêm·māh p̄ir·yōw wə·hå̄·yū lə·ma·’ă·ḵāl wə·‘ā·lê·hū liṯ·rū·p̄āh — WLC · 12
The Borders of the Land

This is what the Lord GOD says: “These [are] the boundaries by which you are to divide the land as an inheritance among the twelve… tribes of Israel; Joseph shall receive two portions.
𐤊𐤄 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤂𐤄 𐤂𐤁𐤅𐤋 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤕𐤕𐤍𐤇𐤋𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤋𐤔𐤍𐤉 𐤏𐤔𐤓 𐤔𐤁𐤈𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤅𐤎𐤐 𐤇𐤁𐤋𐤉𐤌
כֹּ֤ה אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֔ה אָמַר֙ גֵּ֤ה גְבוּל֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר הָאָ֔רֶץ תִּתְנַחֲל֣וּ אֶת־ לִשְׁנֵ֥י עָשָׂ֖ר שִׁבְטֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל יוֹסֵ֖ף חֲבָלִֽים׃ kōh ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh ’ā·mar gêh ḡə·ḇūl ’ă·šer hā·’ā·reṣ tiṯ·na·ḥă·lū ’eṯ- liš·nê ‘ā·śār šiḇ·ṭê yiś·rā·’êl yō·w·sêp̄ ḥă·ḇā·lîm — WLC · 13

You are to divide it equally among them. Because I swore with an uplifted hand to give it to your forefathers, this land will fall to you as an inheritance.

וּנְחַלְתֶּ֤ם אוֹתָהּ֙ אִ֣ישׁ כְּאָחִ֔יו אֲשֶׁ֤ר נָשָׂ֙אתִי֙ אֶת־ יָדִ֔י לְתִתָּ֖הּ לַאֲבֹֽתֵיכֶ֑ם הַזֹּ֛את הָאָ֧רֶץ וְנָ֨פְלָ֜ה לָכֶ֖ם בְּנַחֲלָֽה׃ ū·nə·ḥal·tem ’ō·w·ṯāh ’îš kə·’ā·ḥîw ’ă·šer nā·śā·ṯî ’eṯ- yā·ḏî lə·ṯit·tāh la·’ă·ḇō·ṯê·ḵem haz·zōṯ hā·’ā·reṣ wə·nā·p̄ə·lāh lā·ḵem bə·na·ḥă·lāh — WLC · 14

This [shall be] the boundary of the land: On the north side it will extend from the Great Sea by way of Hethlon through Lebo-hamath to Zedad,
𐤅𐤆𐤄 𐤂𐤁𐤅𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤑𐤐𐤅𐤍𐤄 𐤋𐤐𐤀𐤕 𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤂𐤃𐤅𐤋 𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤃𐤓𐤊 𐤇𐤕𐤋𐤍 𐤋𐤁𐤅𐤀 𐤑𐤃𐤃𐤄
וְזֶ֖ה גְּב֣וּל הָאָ֑רֶץ צָפ֜וֹנָה לִפְאַ֨ת מִן־ הַגָּד֛וֹל הַיָּ֧ם הַדֶּ֥רֶךְ חֶתְלֹ֖ן לְב֥וֹא צְדָֽדָה׃ wə·zeh gə·ḇūl hā·’ā·reṣ ṣā·p̄ō·w·nāh lip̄·’aṯ min- hag·gā·ḏō·wl hay·yām had·de·reḵ ḥeṯ·lōn lə·ḇō·w ṣə·ḏā·ḏāh — WLC · 15

- Berothah, and Sibraim (which [is] on the border between Damascus… [and] Hamath), vvv as far as Hazer-hatticon, which is on the border of Hauran.

So the border will run from the Sea vvv to Hazar-enan, along the northern border of Damascus, with the territory of Hamath to the north. [This] [will be] the northern boundary.

On the east side the border will run between Hauran and Damascus, along the Jordan between Gilead… and the land of Israel, to the Eastern Sea and as far as Tamar. This will be the eastern boundary.

And on the west side, the Great Sea will be the boundary up to a point opposite Lebo-hamath… This will be the western boundary.

- In whatever tribe a foreigner… dwells, you are to assign his inheritance there,” declares the Lord GOD.
