Chapter 6
Judgment against Idolatry
1
And the word of the LORD came to me, saying,

דְבַר־ יְהוָ֖ה וַיְהִ֥י אֵלַ֥י לֵאמֹֽר׃ ḏə·ḇar- Yah·weh way·hî ’ê·lay lê·mōr — WLC · 1

“Son of man, set your face against the mountains of Israel and prophesy against them.
𐤁𐤍 𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤊 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤓𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤁𐤀 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤌
בֶּן־ אָדָ֕ם שִׂ֥ים פָּנֶ֖יךָ אֶל־ הָרֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וְהִנָּבֵ֖א אֲלֵיהֶֽם׃ ben- ’ā·ḏām śîm pā·ne·ḵā ’el- hā·rê yiś·rā·’êl wə·hin·nā·ḇê ’ă·lê·hem — WLC · 2

You are to say: ‘O mountains of Israel, hear the word of the Lord GOD! This is what the Lord GOD says to the mountains and hills, to the ravines and valleys:… I am about to bring a sword against you, and I will destroy your high places.

וְאָ֣מַרְתָּ֔ הָרֵי֙ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל שִׁמְע֖וּ דְּבַר־ אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֑ה כֹּה־ אֲדֹנָ֣י יְ֠הוִה אָמַ֣ר לֶהָרִ֨ים וְלַגְּבָע֜וֹת לָאֲפִיקִ֣ים וְלַגֵּאָיֹת הִנְנִ֨י אֲנִ֜י מֵבִ֤יא חֶ֔רֶב עֲלֵיכֶם֙ וְאִבַּדְתִּ֖י בָּמֽוֹתֵיכֶֽם׃ wə·’ā·mar·tā hā·rê yiś·rā·’êl šim·‘ū də·ḇar- ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh kōh- ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh ’ā·mar le·hā·rîm wə·lag·gə·ḇā·‘ō·wṯ lā·’ă·p̄î·qîm wə·lag·gē·ʾå̄·yōṯ hin·nî ’ă·nî mê·ḇî ḥe·reḇ ‘ă·lê·ḵem wə·’ib·baḏ·tî bā·mō·w·ṯê·ḵem — WLC · 3

Your altars will be demolished and your incense altars will be smashed; and I will cast down your slain before your idols.

מִזְבְּח֣וֹתֵיכֶ֔ם וְנָשַׁ֙מּוּ֙ חַמָּֽנֵיכֶ֑ם וְנִשְׁבְּר֖וּ וְהִפַּלְתִּי֙ חַלְלֵיכֶ֔ם לִפְנֵ֖י גִּלּוּלֵיכֶֽם׃ miz·bə·ḥō·w·ṯê·ḵem wə·nā·šam·mū ḥam·mā·nê·ḵem wə·niš·bə·rū wə·hip·pal·tî ḥal·lê·ḵem lip̄·nê gil·lū·lê·ḵem — WLC · 4

I will lay the corpses vvv of the Israelites before their idols and scatter your bones around your altars.
𐤅𐤍𐤕𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤕 𐤐𐤂𐤓𐤉 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤂𐤋𐤅𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤅𐤆𐤓𐤉𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤕 𐤏𐤑𐤌𐤅𐤕𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤎𐤁𐤉𐤁𐤅𐤕 𐤌𐤆𐤁𐤇𐤅𐤕𐤉𐤊𐤌
וְנָתַתִּ֗י אֶת־ פִּגְרֵי֙ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל לִפְנֵ֖י גִּלּֽוּלֵיהֶ֑ם וְזֵרִיתִי֙ אֶת־ עַצְמ֣וֹתֵיכֶ֔ם סְבִיב֖וֹת מִזְבְּחוֹתֵיכֶֽם׃ wə·nā·ṯat·tî ’eṯ- piḡ·rê bə·nê yiś·rā·’êl lip̄·nê gil·lū·lê·hem wə·zê·rî·ṯî ’eṯ- ‘aṣ·mō·w·ṯê·ḵem sə·ḇî·ḇō·wṯ miz·bə·ḥō·w·ṯê·ḵem — WLC · 5

Wherever you live, the cities will be laid waste and the high places will be demolished, so that your altars will be laid waste and desecrated, your idols smashed and obliterated, your incense altars cut down, and your works blotted out.

בְּכֹל֙ מוֹשְׁב֣וֹתֵיכֶ֔ם הֶעָרִ֣ים תֶּחֱרַ֔בְנָה וְהַבָּמ֖וֹת תִּישָׁ֑מְנָה לְמַעַן֩ מִזְבְּחֽוֹתֵיכֶ֗ם יֶחֶרְב֨וּ וְיֶאְשְׁמ֜וּ גִּלּ֣וּלֵיכֶ֔ם וְנִשְׁבְּר֤וּ וְנִשְׁבְּתוּ֙ חַמָּ֣נֵיכֶ֔ם וְנִגְדְּעוּ֙ מַעֲשֵׂיכֶֽם׃ וְנִמְח֖וּ bə·ḵōl mō·wō·šə·ḇō·w·ṯê·ḵem he·‘ā·rîm te·ḥĕ·raḇ·nāh wə·hab·bā·mō·wṯ tî·šā·mə·nāh lə·ma·‘an miz·bə·ḥō·w·ṯê·ḵem ye·ḥer·ḇū wə·ye’·šə·mū gil·lū·lê·ḵem wə·niš·bə·rū wə·niš·bə·ṯū ḥam·mā·nê·ḵem wə·niḡ·də·‘ū ma·‘ă·śê·ḵem wə·nim·ḥū — WLC · 6

The slain will fall among you, and you will know that I am the LORD.

חָלָ֖ל וְנָפַ֥ל בְּתֽוֹכְכֶ֑ם וִֽידַעְתֶּ֖ם כִּֽי־ אֲנִ֥י יְהוָֽה׃ ḥā·lāl wə·nā·p̄al bə·ṯō·wḵ·ḵem wî·ḏa‘·tem kî- ’ă·nî Yah·weh — WLC · 7
A Remnant to Be Blessed

Yet I will leave a remnant, for some of you will escape the sword when you are scattered among the nations and throughout the lands.
𐤅𐤄𐤅𐤕𐤓𐤕𐤉 𐤁𐤄𐤉𐤅𐤕 𐤋𐤊𐤌 𐤐𐤋𐤉𐤈𐤉 𐤇𐤓𐤁 𐤁𐤄𐤆𐤓𐤅𐤕𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤁𐤂𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤀𐤓𐤑𐤅𐤕
וְהוֹתַרְתִּ֗י בִּהְי֥וֹת לָכֶ֛ם פְּלִ֥יטֵי חֶ֖רֶב בְּהִזָּרֽוֹתֵיכֶ֖ם בַּגּוֹיִ֑ם בָּאֲרָצֽוֹת׃ wə·hō·w·ṯar·tî bih·yō·wṯ lā·ḵem pə·lî·ṭê ḥe·reḇ bə·hiz·zā·rō·w·ṯê·ḵem bag·gō·w·yim bā·’ă·rā·ṣō·wṯ — WLC · 8

Then in the nations to which they have been carried captive, your survivors will remember Me—… how I have been grieved by their adulterous hearts that turned away from Me, and by their eyes that lusted after idols. So they will loathe themselves for the evil they have done and for all their abominations.
𐤁𐤂𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤍𐤔𐤁𐤅 𐤐𐤋𐤉𐤈𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤅𐤆𐤊𐤓𐤅 𐤀𐤅𐤕𐤉 𐤔𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤍𐤔𐤁𐤓𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤆𐤅𐤍𐤄 𐤋𐤁𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤎𐤓 𐤌𐤏𐤋𐤉 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤄𐤆𐤍𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤉 𐤂𐤋𐤅𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤅𐤍𐤒𐤈𐤅 𐤁𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤓𐤏𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤏𐤔𐤅 𐤋𐤊𐤋 𐤕𐤅𐤏𐤁𐤕𐤉𐤄𐤌
בַּגּוֹיִם֮ אֲשֶׁ֣ר נִשְׁבּוּ־ פְלִֽיטֵיכֶ֜ם וְזָכְר֨וּ אוֹתִ֗י שָׁם֒ אֲשֶׁ֨ר נִשְׁבַּ֜רְתִּי אֶת־ הַזּוֹנֶ֗ה לִבָּ֣ם אֲשֶׁר־ סָר֙ מֵֽעָלַ֔י וְאֵת֙ עֵֽינֵיהֶ֔ם הַזֹּנ֕וֹת אַחֲרֵ֖י גִּלּֽוּלֵיהֶ֑ם וְנָקֹ֙טּוּ֙ בִּפְנֵיהֶ֔ם אֶל־ הָֽרָעוֹת֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר עָשׂ֔וּ לְכֹ֖ל תּוֹעֲבֹתֵיהֶֽם׃ bag·gō·w·yim ’ă·šer niš·bū- p̄ə·lî·ṭê·ḵem wə·zā·ḵə·rū ’ō·w·ṯî šām ’ă·šer niš·bar·tî ’eṯ- haz·zō·w·neh lib·bām ’ă·šer- sār mê·‘ā·lay wə·’êṯ ‘ê·nê·hem haz·zō·nō·wṯ ’a·ḥă·rê gil·lū·lê·hem wə·nā·qōṭ·ṭū bip̄·nê·hem ’el- hā·rā·‘ō·wṯ ’ă·šer ‘ā·śū lə·ḵōl tō·w·‘ă·ḇō·ṯê·hem — WLC · 9

And they will know that I am the LORD; I did not declare in vain that I would bring this calamity upon them.
𐤅𐤉𐤃𐤏𐤅 𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤋𐤀 𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤋 𐤇𐤍𐤌 𐤋𐤏𐤔𐤅𐤕 𐤄𐤆𐤀𐤕𐤐 𐤄𐤓𐤏𐤄 𐤋𐤄𐤌
וְיָדְע֖וּ כִּֽי־ אֲנִ֣י יְהוָ֑ה לֹ֤א דִּבַּ֔רְתִּי אֶל־ חִנָּם֙ לַעֲשׂ֥וֹת הַזֹּֽאת׃פ הָרָעָ֥ה לָהֶ֖ם wə·yā·ḏə·‘ū kî- ’ă·nî Yah·weh lō dib·bar·tî ’el- ḥin·nām la·‘ă·śō·wṯ haz·zōṯ hā·rā·‘āh lā·hem — WLC · 10

This is what the Lord GOD says: Clap your hands, stomp your feet, and cry out “Alas!” because of all the wicked abominations of the house of Israel, who will fall by sword and famine and plague.

כֹּֽה־ אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֗ה אָמַ֞ר הַכֵּ֨ה בְכַפְּךָ֜ וּרְקַ֤ע בְּרַגְלְךָ֙ וֶֽאֱמָר־ אָ֔ח אֶ֛ל כָּל־ רָע֖וֹת תּוֹעֲב֥וֹת בֵּ֣ית יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל אֲשֶׁ֗ר יִפֹּֽלוּ׃ בַּחֶ֛רֶב בָּרָעָ֥ב וּבַדֶּ֖בֶר kōh- ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh ’ā·mar hak·kêh ḇə·ḵap·pə·ḵā ū·rə·qa‘ bə·raḡ·lə·ḵā we·’ĕ·mār- ’āḥ ’el kāl- rā·‘ō·wṯ tō·w·‘ă·ḇō·wṯ bêṯ yiś·rā·’êl ’ă·šer yip·pō·lū ba·ḥe·reḇ bā·rā·‘āḇ ū·ḇad·de·ḇer — WLC · 11

He who is far off will die by the plague, he who is near will fall by the sword, and he who remains… will die by famine. So I will vent My fury upon them.

הָרָח֞וֹק יָמ֗וּת בַּדֶּ֣בֶר וְהַקָּרוֹב֙ יִפּ֔וֹל בַּחֶ֣רֶב וְהַנִּשְׁאָר֙ וְהַנָּצ֔וּר יָמ֑וּת בָּרָעָ֖ב וְכִלֵּיתִ֥י חֲמָתִ֖י בָּֽם׃ hā·rā·ḥō·wq yā·mūṯ bad·de·ḇer wə·haq·qā·rō·wḇ yip·pō·wl ba·ḥe·reḇ wə·han·niš·’ār wə·han·nā·ṣūr yā·mūṯ bā·rā·‘āḇ wə·ḵil·lê·ṯî ḥă·mā·ṯî bām — WLC · 12

Then you will know that I am the LORD, when their slain lie among their idols around their altars, on every high hill, on all the mountaintops…, and under every green… tree [and] leafy oak— the places where they offered… fragrant incense to all their idols.
𐤅𐤉𐤃𐤏𐤕𐤌 𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤇𐤋𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤁𐤄𐤉𐤅𐤕 𐤁𐤕𐤅𐤊 𐤂𐤋𐤅𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤎𐤁𐤉𐤁𐤅𐤕 𐤌𐤆𐤁𐤇𐤅𐤕𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤀𐤋 𐤊𐤋 𐤓𐤌𐤄 𐤂𐤁𐤏𐤄 𐤁𐤊𐤋 𐤓𐤀𐤔𐤉 𐤄𐤄𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤕𐤇𐤕 𐤊𐤋 𐤓𐤏𐤍𐤍 𐤅𐤕𐤇𐤕 𐤏𐤑 𐤊𐤋 𐤏𐤁𐤕𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄 𐤌𐤒𐤅𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤍𐤕𐤍𐤅 𐤔𐤌 𐤍𐤉𐤇𐤇 𐤓𐤉𐤇 𐤋𐤊𐤋 𐤂𐤋𐤅𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤌
וִֽידַעְתֶּם֙ כִּֽי־ אֲנִ֣י יְהוָ֔ה חַלְלֵיהֶ֗ם בִּֽהְי֣וֹת בְּתוֹךְ֙ גִּלּ֣וּלֵיהֶ֔ם סְבִיב֖וֹת מִזְבְּחֽוֹתֵיהֶ֑ם אֶל֩ כָּל־ רָמָ֜ה גִּבְעָ֨ה בְּכֹ֣ל׀ רָאשֵׁ֣י הֶהָרִ֗ים וְתַ֨חַת כָּל־ רַֽעֲנָן֙ וְתַ֙חַת֙ עֵ֤ץ כָּל־ עֲבֻתָּ֔ה אֵלָ֣ה מְק֗וֹם אֲשֶׁ֤ר נָֽתְנוּ־ שָׁם֙ נִיחֹ֔חַ רֵ֣יחַ לְכֹ֖ל גִּלּוּלֵיהֶֽם׃ wî·ḏa‘·tem kî- ’ă·nî Yah·weh ḥal·lê·hem bih·yō·wṯ bə·ṯō·wḵ gil·lū·lê·hem sə·ḇî·ḇō·wṯ miz·bə·ḥō·w·ṯê·hem ’el kāl- rā·māh giḇ·‘āh bə·ḵōl rā·šê he·hā·rîm wə·ṯa·ḥaṯ kāl- ra·‘ă·nān wə·ṯa·ḥaṯ ‘êṣ kāl- ‘ă·ḇut·tāh ’ê·lāh mə·qō·wm ’ă·šer nā·ṯə·nū- šām nî·ḥō·aḥ rê·aḥ lə·ḵōl gil·lū·lê·hem — WLC · 13

I will stretch out My hand against them, and wherever they live I will make the land a desolate waste, from the wilderness to Diblah. Then they will know that I am the LORD.’”

וְנָטִ֤יתִי אֶת־ יָדִי֙ עֲלֵיהֶ֔ם בְּכֹ֖ל מוֹשְׁבֽוֹתֵיהֶ֑ם וְנָתַתִּ֨י אֶת־ הָאָ֜רֶץ שְׁמָמָ֤ה וּמְשַׁמָּה֙ מִמִּדְבַּ֣ר דִּבְלָ֔תָה וְיָדְע֖וּ כִּֽי־ אֲנִ֥י יְהוָֽה׃פ wə·nā·ṭî·ṯî ’eṯ- yā·ḏî ‘ă·lê·hem bə·ḵōl mō·wō·šə·ḇō·w·ṯê·hem wə·nā·ṯat·tî ’eṯ- hā·’ā·reṣ šə·mā·māh ū·mə·šam·māh mim·miḏ·bar diḇ·lā·ṯāh wə·yā·ḏə·‘ū kî- ’ă·nî Yah·weh — WLC · 14
