Chapter 7
The Hour of Doom

And the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓
דְבַר־ יְהוָ֖ה וַיְהִ֥י אֵלַ֥י לֵאמֹֽר׃ ḏə·ḇar- Yah·weh way·hî ’ê·lay lê·mōr — WLC · 1

“O son of man, this is what the Lord GOD says to the land of Israel: ‘The end! The end has come upon the four corners of the land.
𐤅𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤁𐤍 𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤊𐤄 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤋𐤀𐤃𐤌𐤕 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤒𐤑 𐤄𐤒𐤑 𐤁𐤀 𐤏𐤋 𐤀𐤓𐤁𐤏𐤕 𐤊𐤍𐤐𐤅𐤕 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑
וְאַתָּ֣ה בֶן־ אָדָ֗ם כֹּה־ אֲדֹנָ֧י יְהוִ֛ה אָמַ֞ר לְאַדְמַ֥ת יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל קֵ֑ץ הַקֵּ֔ץ בָּ֣א עַל־ אַרְבַּעַת כַּנְפ֥וֹת הָאָֽרֶץ׃ wə·’at·tāh ḇen- ’ā·ḏām kōh- ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh ’ā·mar lə·’aḏ·maṯ yiś·rā·’êl qêṣ haq·qêṣ bā ‘al- ʾar·ba·ʿaṯ kan·p̄ō·wṯ hā·’ā·reṣ — WLC · 2

The end is now upon you, and I will unleash My anger against you. I will judge you according to your ways and repay you for all your abominations.

הַקֵּ֣ץ עַתָּה֙ עָלַ֔יִךְ וְשִׁלַּחְתִּ֤י אַפִּי֙ בָּ֔ךְ וּשְׁפַטְתִּ֖יךְ כִּדְרָכָ֑יִךְ וְנָתַתִּ֣י עָלַ֔יִךְ אֵ֖ת כָּל־ תּוֹעֲבֹתָֽיִךְ׃ haq·qêṣ ‘at·tāh ‘ā·la·yiḵ wə·šil·laḥ·tî ’ap·pî bāḵ ū·šə·p̄aṭ·tîḵ kiḏ·rā·ḵā·yiḵ wə·nā·ṯat·tî ‘ā·la·yiḵ ’êṯ kāl- tō·w·‘ă·ḇō·ṯā·yiḵ — WLC · 3

I will not look on you… with pity, nor will I spare you, but I will punish you for your ways… and for the abominations among you. Then you will know that I am the LORD.’

וְלֹא־ עָלַ֖יִךְ עֵינִ֛י תָח֥וֹס וְלֹ֣א אֶחְמ֑וֹל כִּ֣י דְרָכַ֜יִךְ עָלַ֣יִךְ אֶתֵּ֗ן וְתוֹעֲבוֹתַ֙יִךְ֙ בְּתוֹכֵ֣ךְ תִּֽהְיֶ֔יןָ וִידַעְתֶּ֖ם כִּֽי־ אֲנִ֥י יְהוָֽה׃פ wə·lō- ‘ā·la·yiḵ ‘ê·nî ṯā·ḥō·ws wə·lō ’eḥ·mō·wl kî ḏə·rā·ḵa·yiḵ ‘ā·la·yiḵ ’et·tên wə·ṯō·w·‘ă·ḇō·w·ṯa·yiḵ bə·ṯō·w·ḵêḵ tih·ye·nā wî·ḏa‘·tem kî- ’ă·nî Yah·weh — WLC · 4

This is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Disaster! An unprecedented disaster behold, it is coming!
𐤊𐤄 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤓𐤏𐤄 𐤀𐤇𐤕 𐤓𐤏𐤄 𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤁𐤀𐤄
כֹּ֥ה אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֑ה אָמַ֖ר רָעָ֛ה אַחַ֥ת רָעָ֖ה הִנֵּ֥ה בָאָֽה׃ kōh ’ă·ḏō·nāy Yah·weh ’ā·mar rā·‘āh ’a·ḥaṯ rā·‘āh hin·nêh ḇā·’āh — WLC · 5

The end has come! The end has come! It has roused itself against you. Behold, it has come!

קֵ֣ץ בָּ֔א הַקֵּ֖ץ בָּ֥א הֵקִ֣יץ אֵלָ֑יִךְ הִנֵּ֖ה בָּאָֽה׃ qêṣ bā haq·qêṣ bā hê·qîṣ ’ê·lā·yiḵ hin·nêh bā·’āh — WLC · 6

Doom has come to you, O inhabitants of the land. The time has come; the day is near; there is panic on the mountains instead of shouts of joy…

הַצְּפִירָ֛ה בָּ֧אָה אֵלֶ֖יךָ יוֹשֵׁ֣ב הָאָ֑רֶץ הָעֵ֗ת בָּ֣א הַיּ֥וֹם קָר֛וֹב מְהוּמָ֖ה הָרִֽים׃ וְלֹא־ הֵ֥ד haṣ·ṣə·p̄î·rāh bā·’āh ’ê·le·ḵā yō·wō·šêḇ hā·’ā·reṣ hā·‘êṯ bā hay·yō·wm qā·rō·wḇ mə·hū·māh hā·rîm wə·lō- hêḏ — WLC · 7

- Very soon I will pour out My wrath upon you and vent My anger against you; I will judge you according to your ways and repay you… for all your abominations.

עַתָּ֣ה מִקָּר֗וֹב אֶשְׁפּ֤וֹךְ חֲמָתִי֙ עָלַ֔יִךְ וְכִלֵּיתִ֤י אַפִּי֙ בָּ֔ךְ וּשְׁפַטְתִּ֖יךְ כִּדְרָכָ֑יִךְ וְנָתַתִּ֣י עָלַ֔יִךְ אֵ֖ת כָּל־ תּוֹעֲבוֹתָֽיִךְ׃ ‘at·tāh miq·qā·rō·wḇ ’eš·pō·wḵ ḥă·mā·ṯî ‘ā·la·yiḵ wə·ḵil·lê·ṯî ’ap·pî bāḵ ū·šə·p̄aṭ·tîḵ kiḏ·rā·ḵā·yiḵ wə·nā·ṯat·tî ‘ā·la·yiḵ ’êṯ kāl- tō·w·‘ă·ḇō·w·ṯā·yiḵ — WLC · 8

I will not look on you with pity…, nor will I spare you, but I will punish you for your ways… and for the abominations among you… Then you will know that it is I, the LORD, who strikes the blow.

וְלֹא־ תָח֥וֹס עֵינִ֖י וְלֹ֣א אֶחְמ֑וֹל אֶתֵּ֗ן כִּדְרָכַ֜יִךְ עָלַ֣יִךְ וְתוֹעֲבוֹתַ֙יִךְ֙ בְּתוֹכֵ֣ךְ תִּֽהְיֶ֔יןָ וִֽידַעְתֶּ֕ם כִּ֛י אֲנִ֥י יְהוָ֖ה מַכֶּֽה׃ wə·lō- ṯā·ḥō·ws ‘ê·nî wə·lō ’eḥ·mō·wl ’et·tên kiḏ·rā·ḵa·yiḵ ‘ā·la·yiḵ wə·ṯō·w·‘ă·ḇō·w·ṯa·yiḵ bə·ṯō·w·ḵêḵ tih·ye·nā wî·ḏa‘·tem kî ’ă·nî Yah·weh mak·keh — WLC · 9

Behold, the day is here! It has come! Doom has gone out, the rod has budded, arrogance has bloomed.
𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤄𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤁𐤀𐤄 𐤄𐤑𐤐𐤓𐤄 𐤉𐤑𐤀𐤄 𐤄𐤌𐤈𐤄 𐤐𐤓𐤇 𐤄𐤆𐤃𐤅𐤍 𐤑𐤑
הִנֵּ֥ה הַיּ֖וֹם הִנֵּ֣ה בָאָ֑ה הַצְּפִרָ֔ה יָֽצְאָה֙ הַמַּטֶּ֔ה פָּרַ֖ח הַזָּדֽוֹן׃ צָ֚ץ hin·nêh hay·yō·wm hin·nêh ḇā·’āh haṣ·ṣə·p̄i·rāh yā·ṣə·’āh ham·maṭ·ṭeh pā·raḥ haz·zā·ḏō·wn ṣāṣ — WLC · 10

Their violence has grown into a rod [to punish their] wickedness. None of them [will remain]: none of their multitude, none of their wealth, and nothing of value.

הֶחָמָ֥ס׀ קָ֖ם לְמַטֵּה־ רֶ֑שַׁע לֹא־ מֵהֶ֞ם וְלֹ֧א מֵהֲמוֹנָ֛ם וְלֹ֥א מֶהֱמֵהֶ֖ם וְלֹא־ נֹ֥הַּ בָּהֶֽם׃ he·ḥā·mās qām lə·maṭ·ṭêh- re·ša‘ lō- mê·hem wə·lō mê·hă·mō·w·nām wə·lō me·hĕ·mê·hem wə·lō- nō·ah bā·hem — WLC · 11

The time has come; the day has arrived. Let the buyer not rejoice and the seller not mourn, for wrath is upon the whole multitude.

הָעֵת֙ בָּ֤א הַיּ֔וֹם הִגִּ֣יעַ הַקּוֹנֶה֙ אַל־ יִשְׂמָ֔ח וְהַמּוֹכֵ֖ר אַל־ יִתְאַבָּ֑ל כִּ֥י חָר֖וֹן אֶל־ כָּל־ הֲמוֹנָֽהּ׃ hā·‘êṯ bā hay·yō·wm hig·gî·a‘ haq·qō·w·neh ’al- yiś·māḥ wə·ham·mō·w·ḵêr ’al- yiṯ·’ab·bāl kî ḥā·rō·wn ’el- kāl- hă·mō·w·nāh — WLC · 12

The seller will surely not recover… what he sold while both remain alive… For the vision concerning the whole multitude will not be revoked, and because of their iniquity, not one of them… will preserve his life.

הַמּוֹכֵ֗ר כִּ֣י לֹ֣א יָשׁ֔וּב אֶל־ הַמִּמְכָּר֙ וְע֥וֹד בַּחַיִּ֖ים חַיָּתָ֑ם כִּֽי־ חָז֤וֹן אֶל־ כָּל־ הֲמוֹנָהּ֙ לֹ֣א יָשׁ֔וּב בַּעֲוֺנ֛וֹ וְאִ֧ישׁ לֹ֥א יִתְחַזָּֽקוּ׃ חַיָּת֖וֹ ham·mō·w·ḵêr kî lō yā·šūḇ ’el- ham·mim·kār wə·‘ō·wḏ ba·ḥay·yîm ḥay·yā·ṯām kî- ḥā·zō·wn ’el- kāl- hă·mō·w·nāh lō yā·šūḇ ba·‘ă·wō·nōw wə·’îš lō yiṯ·ḥaz·zā·qū ḥay·yā·ṯōw — WLC · 13
The Desolation of Israel

They have blown the trumpet and made everything ready, but no one goes to war, for My wrath is upon the whole multitude.

תָּקְע֤וּ בַתָּק֙וֹעַ֙ וְהָכִ֣ין הַכֹּ֔ל וְאֵ֥ין הֹלֵ֖ךְ לַמִּלְחָמָ֑ה כִּ֥י חֲרוֹנִ֖י אֶל־ כָּל־ הֲמוֹנָֽהּ׃ tā·qə·‘ū ḇat·tā·qō·w·a‘ wə·hā·ḵîn hak·kōl wə·’ên hō·lêḵ lam·mil·ḥā·māh kî ḥă·rō·w·nî ’el- kāl- hă·mō·w·nāh — WLC · 14

The sword is outside; plague and famine are within. Those in the country will die by the sword, and those in the city will be devoured by famine and plague.

הַחֶ֣רֶב בַּח֔וּץ וְהַדֶּ֥בֶר וְהָרָעָ֖ב מִבָּ֑יִת אֲשֶׁ֤ר בַּשָּׂדֶה֙ יָמ֔וּת בַּחֶ֣רֶב וַאֲשֶׁ֣ר בָּעִ֔יר יֹאכֲלֶֽנּוּ׃ רָעָ֥ב וָדֶ֖בֶר ha·ḥe·reḇ ba·ḥūṣ wə·had·de·ḇer wə·hā·rā·‘āḇ mib·bā·yiṯ ’ă·šer baś·śā·ḏeh yā·mūṯ ba·ḥe·reḇ wa·’ă·šer bā·‘îr yō·ḵă·len·nū rā·‘āḇ wā·ḏe·ḇer — WLC · 15

The survivors… will escape and live in the mountains, moaning like doves of the valley, each for his own iniquity.

פְּלִ֣יטֵיהֶ֔ם וְהָי֣וּ וּפָֽלְטוּ֙ אֶל־ הֶהָרִ֗ים כֻּלָּ֖ם הֹמ֑וֹת כְּיוֹנֵ֧י הַגֵּאָי֛וֹת אִ֖ישׁ בַּעֲוֺנֽוֹ׃ pə·lî·ṭê·hem wə·hā·yū ū·p̄ā·lə·ṭū ’el- he·hā·rîm kul·lām hō·mō·wṯ kə·yō·w·nê hag·gê·’ā·yō·wṯ ’îš ba·‘ă·wō·nōw — WLC · 16

Every hand will go limp, and every knee will turn to water.
𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤉𐤃𐤉𐤌 𐤕𐤓𐤐𐤉𐤍𐤄 𐤅𐤊𐤋 𐤁𐤓𐤊𐤉𐤌 𐤕𐤋𐤊𐤍𐤄 𐤌𐤉𐤌
כָּל־ הַיָּדַ֖יִם תִּרְפֶּ֑ינָה וְכָל־ בִּרְכַּ֖יִם תֵּלַ֥כְנָה מָּֽיִם׃ kāl- hay·yā·ḏa·yim tir·pe·nāh wə·ḵāl bir·ka·yim tê·laḵ·nāh mā·yim — WLC · 17

They will put on sackcloth, and terror… will overwhelm them. Shame will cover all their faces, and all their heads will be shaved.
𐤅𐤇𐤂𐤓𐤅 𐤔𐤒𐤉𐤌 𐤐𐤋𐤑𐤅𐤕 𐤅𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤊𐤎𐤕𐤄 𐤀𐤅𐤕𐤌 𐤁𐤅𐤔𐤄 𐤊𐤋 𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤁𐤊𐤋 𐤓𐤀𐤔𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤒𐤓𐤇𐤄
וְחָגְר֣וּ שַׂקִּ֔ים פַּלָּצ֑וּת וְאֶ֤ל וְכִסְּתָ֥ה אוֹתָ֖ם בּוּשָׁ֔ה כָּל־ פָּנִים֙ וּבְכָל־ רָאשֵׁיהֶ֖ם קָרְחָֽה׃ wə·ḥā·ḡə·rū śaq·qîm pal·lā·ṣūṯ wə·’el wə·ḵis·sə·ṯāh ’ō·w·ṯām bū·šāh kāl- pā·nîm ū·ḇə·ḵāl rā·šê·hem qā·rə·ḥāh — WLC · 18

They will throw their silver into the streets, and their gold will seem unclean. Their silver and gold cannot… save them in the day of the wrath of the LORD. They cannot satisfy their appetites or fill their stomachs with [wealth],… for it became the stumbling block that brought their iniquity.

His beautiful ornaments they transformed into pride and used them to fashion their vile images and detestable idols. Therefore… I will make these into something unclean for them.

And I will hand these things over… as plunder to foreigners and loot to the wicked of the earth, who will defile them.

I will turn My face away from them, and they will defile My treasured place. Violent men will enter it, and they will defile it.

Forge the chain, for the land is full of crimes of bloodshed, and the city is full of violence.

So I will bring the most wicked of nations to take possession of their houses. I will end the pride of the mighty, and their holy places will be profaned.

Anguish is coming! They will seek peace, but find none.

Disaster upon disaster will come, and rumor after rumor. Then they will seek a vision from a prophet, but instruction from the priests will perish, as will counsel from the elders.

The king will mourn, the prince will be clothed with despair, and the hands of the people of the land will tremble. I will deal with them according to their conduct, and I will judge them by their own standards. Then they will know that I am the LORD.’”
