Daniel Removed to Babylon

In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came to Jerusalem and besieged it.
𐤔𐤋𐤅𐤔 𐤁𐤔𐤍𐤕 𐤋𐤌𐤋𐤊𐤅𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤍𐤁𐤅𐤊𐤃𐤍𐤀𐤑𐤓 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤁𐤁𐤋 𐤁𐤀 𐤉𐤓𐤅𐤔𐤋𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤑𐤓 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤄
שָׁל֔וֹשׁ בִּשְׁנַ֣ת לְמַלְכ֖וּת יְהוֹיָקִ֣ים מֶֽלֶךְ־ יְהוּדָ֑ה נְבוּכַדְנֶאצַּ֧ר מֶֽלֶךְ־ בָּבֶ֛ל בָּ֣א יְרוּשָׁלִַ֖ם וַיָּ֥צַר עָלֶֽיהָ׃ šā·lō·wōš biš·naṯ lə·mal·ḵūṯ yə·hō·w·yā·qîm me·leḵ- yə·hū·ḏāh nə·ḇū·ḵaḏ·neṣ·ṣar me·leḵ- bā·ḇel bā yə·rū·šā·lim way·yā·ṣar ‘ā·le·hā — WLC · 1

And the Lord delivered into his hand Jehoiakim king of Judah, along with some of the articles from the house of God. He carried [these] off to the land of Shinar, to the house of his god, [where] he put [them] vvv in the treasury of his god.

אֲדֹנָ֨י וַיִּתֵּן֩ בְּיָד֜וֹ יְהוֹיָקִ֣ים מֶֽלֶךְ־ יְהוּדָ֗ה אֶת־ וּמִקְצָת֙ כְּלֵ֣י בֵית־ הָֽאֱלֹהִ֔ים וַיְבִיאֵ֥ם אֶֽרֶץ־ שִׁנְעָ֖ר בֵּ֣ית אֱלֹהָ֑יו וְאֶת־ הֵבִ֔יא הַכֵּלִ֣ים בֵּ֖ית אוֹצַ֥ר אֱלֹהָֽיו׃ ’ă·ḏō·nāy way·yit·tên bə·yā·ḏōw yə·hō·w·yā·qîm me·leḵ- yə·hū·ḏāh ’eṯ- ū·miq·ṣāṯ kə·lê ḇêṯ- hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm way·ḇî·’êm ’e·reṣ- šin·‘ār bêṯ ’ĕ·lō·hāw wə·’eṯ- hê·ḇî hak·kê·lîm bêṯ ’ō·w·ṣar ’ĕ·lō·hāw — WLC · 2

Then the king ordered Ashpenaz, the chief of his court officials, to bring in some Israelites… from the royal family and the nobility—
𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤋𐤀𐤔𐤐𐤍𐤆 𐤓𐤁 𐤎𐤓𐤉𐤎𐤉𐤅 𐤋𐤄𐤁𐤉𐤀 𐤅𐤌𐤍 𐤌𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤅𐤊𐤄 𐤅𐤌𐤆𐤓𐤏 𐤄𐤐𐤓𐤕𐤌𐤉𐤌
הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר לְאַשְׁפְּנַ֖ז רַ֣ב סָרִיסָ֑יו לְהָבִ֞יא וּמִן־ מִבְּנֵ֧י יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל הַמְּלוּכָ֖ה וּמִזֶּ֥רַע הַֽפַּרְתְּמִֽים׃ ham·me·leḵ way·yō·mer lə·’aš·pə·naz raḇ sā·rî·sāw lə·hā·ḇî ū·min- mib·bə·nê yiś·rā·’êl ham·mə·lū·ḵāh ū·miz·ze·ra‘ hap·par·tə·mîm — WLC · 3

young men without blemish, handsome…, gifted in all wisdom, knowledgeable…, quick to understand, and qualified to serve in the king’s palace— and to teach them the language and literature of the Chaldeans.

יְלָדִ֣ים אֲשֶׁ֣ר אֵֽין־ בָּהֶ֣ם כָּל־ מְאוּם וְטוֹבֵ֨י מַרְאֶ֜ה וּמַשְׂכִּילִ֣ים בְּכָל־ חָכְמָ֗ה וְיֹ֤דְעֵי דַ֙עַת֙ מַדָּ֔ע וּמְבִינֵ֣י וַאֲשֶׁר֙ כֹּ֣חַ בָּהֶ֔ם לַעֲמֹ֖ד הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ בְּהֵיכַ֣ל וּֽלֲלַמְּדָ֥ם וּלְשׁ֥וֹן סֵ֖פֶר כַּשְׂדִּֽים׃ yə·lā·ḏîm ’ă·šer ’ên- bā·hem kāl- mə·ʾūm wə·ṭō·w·ḇê mar·’eh ū·maś·kî·lîm bə·ḵāl ḥāḵ·māh wə·yō·ḏə·‘ê ḏa·‘aṯ mad·dā‘ ū·mə·ḇî·nê wa·’ă·šer kō·aḥ bā·hem la·‘ă·mōḏ ham·me·leḵ bə·hê·ḵal ū·lă·lam·mə·ḏām ū·lə·šō·wn sê·p̄er kaś·dîm — WLC · 4

The king assigned them vvv daily provisions of the royal food and wine… They were to be trained for three years, after which they were to enter… the king’s service.

הַמֶּ֜לֶךְ וַיְמַן֩ לָהֶ֨ם י֣וֹם בְּיוֹמ֗וֹ מִפַּת־ דְּבַר־ הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ בַּ֤ג וּמִיֵּ֣ין מִשְׁתָּ֔יו וּֽלְגַדְּלָ֖ם שָׁל֑וֹשׁ שָׁנִ֣ים וּמִ֨קְצָתָ֔ם יַֽעַמְד֖וּ לִפְנֵ֥י הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ ham·me·leḵ way·man lā·hem yō·wm bə·yō·w·mōw mip·paṯ- də·ḇar- ham·me·leḵ baḡ ū·mî·yên miš·tāw ū·lə·ḡad·də·lām šā·lō·wōš šā·nîm ū·miq·ṣā·ṯām ya·‘am·ḏū lip̄·nê ham·me·leḵ — WLC · 5

Among these [young men] were some [from] Judah: Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah.

בָהֶ֖ם וַיְהִ֥י מִבְּנֵ֣י יְהוּדָ֑ה דָּנִיֵּ֣אל חֲנַנְיָ֔ה מִֽישָׁאֵ֖ל וַעֲזַרְיָֽה׃ ḇā·hem way·hî mib·bə·nê yə·hū·ḏāh dā·nî·yêl ḥă·nan·yāh mî·šā·’êl wa·‘ă·zar·yāh — WLC · 6

The chief official gave them… new names: To Daniel he gave the name Belteshazzar; to Hananiah, Shadrach; to Mishael, Meshach; and to Azariah, vvv Abednego.

Daniel’s Faithfulness

But Daniel made up his mind that he would not defile himself with the king’s food or wine… So he asked the chief official for permission not to defile himself.
𐤃𐤍𐤉𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤌 𐤏𐤋 𐤋𐤁𐤅 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤕𐤂𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤁𐤐𐤕𐤁𐤂 𐤅𐤁𐤉𐤉𐤍 𐤌𐤔𐤕𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤒𐤔 𐤌𐤔𐤓 𐤄𐤎𐤓𐤉𐤎𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤕𐤂𐤀𐤋
דָּנִיֵּאל֙ וַיָּ֤שֶׂם עַל־ לִבּ֔וֹ אֲשֶׁ֧ר לֹֽא־ יִתְגָּאַ֛ל הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ בְּפַתְבַּ֥ג וּבְיֵ֣ין מִשְׁתָּ֑יו וַיְבַקֵּשׁ֙ מִשַּׂ֣ר הַסָּרִיסִ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֖ר לֹ֥א יִתְגָּאָֽל׃ dā·nî·yêl way·yā·śem ‘al- lib·bōw ’ă·šer lō- yiṯ·gā·’al ham·me·leḵ bə·p̄aṯ·baḡ ū·ḇə·yên miš·tāw way·ḇaq·qêš miś·śar has·sā·rî·sîm ’ă·šer lō yiṯ·gā·’āl — WLC · 8

Now God had granted Daniel favor and compassion from the chief official,
𐤄𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤍 𐤃𐤍𐤉𐤀𐤋 𐤋𐤇𐤎𐤃 𐤅𐤋𐤓𐤇𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤔𐤓 𐤄𐤎𐤓𐤉𐤎𐤉𐤌
הָֽאֱלֹהִים֙ אֶת־ וַיִּתֵּ֤ן דָּ֣נִיֵּ֔אל לְחֶ֖סֶד וּֽלְרַחֲמִ֑ים לִפְנֵ֖י שַׂ֥ר הַסָּרִיסִֽים׃ hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm ’eṯ- way·yit·tên dā·nî·yêl lə·ḥe·seḏ ū·lə·ra·ḥă·mîm lip̄·nê śar has·sā·rî·sîm — WLC · 9

but he… said to Daniel, “I fear my lord the king, who has assigned your food and drink. For why should he see your faces looking thinner than those of the other young men your age? You would endanger my head before the king!”

שַׂ֤ר הַסָּרִיסִים֙ וַיֹּ֜אמֶר לְדָ֣נִיֵּ֔אל אֲנִי֙ אֶת־ יָרֵ֤א אֲדֹנִ֣י הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ אֲשֶׁ֣ר מִנָּ֔ה אֶת־ מַאֲכַלְכֶ֖ם וְאֶת־ מִשְׁתֵּיכֶ֑ם אֲשֶׁ֡ר לָמָּה֩ יִרְאֶ֨ה אֶת־ פְּנֵיכֶ֜ם זֹֽעֲפִ֗ים מִן־ הַיְלָדִים֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר כְּגִֽילְכֶ֔ם וְחִיַּבְתֶּ֥ם אֶת־ רֹאשִׁ֖י לַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ śar has·sā·rî·sîm way·yō·mer lə·ḏā·nî·yêl ’ă·nî ’eṯ- yā·rê ’ă·ḏō·nî ham·me·leḵ ’ă·šer min·nāh ’eṯ- ma·’ă·ḵal·ḵem wə·’eṯ- miš·tê·ḵem ’ă·šer lām·māh yir·’eh ’eṯ- pə·nê·ḵem zō·‘ă·p̄îm min- hay·lā·ḏîm ’ă·šer kə·ḡî·lə·ḵem wə·ḥî·yaḇ·tem ’eṯ- rō·šî lam·me·leḵ — WLC · 10

Then Daniel said to the steward whom the chief official had appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah,
𐤃𐤍𐤉𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤑𐤓 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤔𐤓 𐤄𐤎𐤓𐤉𐤎𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤍𐤄 𐤏𐤋 𐤃𐤍𐤉𐤀𐤋 𐤇𐤍𐤍𐤉𐤄 𐤌𐤉𐤔𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤏𐤆𐤓𐤉𐤄
דָּנִיֵּ֖אל וַיֹּ֥אמֶר אֶל־ הַמֶּלְצַ֑ר אֲשֶׁ֤ר שַׂ֣ר הַסָּֽרִיסִ֔ים מִנָּה֙ עַל־ דָּנִיֵּ֣אל חֲנַנְיָ֔ה מִֽישָׁאֵ֖ל וַעֲזַרְיָֽה׃ dā·nî·yêl way·yō·mer ’el- ham·mel·ṣar ’ă·šer śar has·sā·rî·sîm min·nāh ‘al- dā·nî·yêl ḥă·nan·yāh mî·šā·’êl wa·‘ă·zar·yāh — WLC · 11

“Please test your servants for ten days. Let us be given only vegetables to eat and water to drink.

נָ֥א אֶת־ נַס־ עֲבָדֶ֖יךָ עֲשָׂרָ֑ה יָמִ֣ים וְיִתְּנוּ־ לָ֜נוּ מִן־ הַזֵּרֹעִ֛ים וְנֹאכְלָ֖ה וּמַ֥יִם וְנִשְׁתֶּֽה׃ nā ’eṯ- nas- ‘ă·ḇā·ḏe·ḵā ‘ă·śā·rāh yā·mîm wə·yit·tə·nū- lā·nū min- haz·zê·rō·‘îm wə·nō·ḵə·lāh ū·ma·yim wə·niš·teh — WLC · 12

Then compare… our appearances with those of the young men who are eating the royal food, and deal with your servants according to what you see.”

וְיֵרָא֤וּ לְפָנֶ֙יךָ֙ מַרְאֵ֔ינוּ וּמַרְאֵה֙ הַיְלָדִ֔ים הָאֹ֣כְלִ֔ים אֵ֖ת הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ פַּתְבַּ֣ג עֲשֵׂ֖ה עִם־ עֲבָדֶֽיךָ׃ וְכַאֲשֶׁ֣ר תִּרְאֵ֔ה wə·yê·rā·’ū lə·p̄ā·ne·ḵā mar·’ê·nū ū·mar·’êh hay·lā·ḏîm hā·’ō·ḵə·lîm ’êṯ ham·me·leḵ paṯ·baḡ ‘ă·śêh ‘im- ‘ă·ḇā·ḏe·ḵā wə·ḵa·’ă·šer tir·’êh — WLC · 13

So he consented vvv to this and tested them for ten days.
𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤌𐤏 𐤋𐤄𐤌 𐤋𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤄𐤆𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤍𐤎𐤌 𐤏𐤔𐤓𐤄 𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤌
וַיִּשְׁמַ֥ע לָהֶ֖ם לַדָּבָ֣ר הַזֶּ֑ה וַיְנַסֵּ֖ם עֲשָׂרָֽה׃ יָמִ֥ים way·yiš·ma‘ lā·hem lad·dā·ḇār haz·zeh way·nas·sêm ‘ă·śā·rāh yā·mîm — WLC · 14

And at the end of ten days, they looked… healthier and better nourished… than all the young men who were eating the king’s food.

מִן־ וּמִקְצָת֙ עֲשָׂרָ֔ה יָמִ֣ים נִרְאָ֤ה מַרְאֵיהֶם֙ ט֔וֹב וּבְרִיאֵ֖י בָּשָׂ֑ר כָּל־ הַיְלָדִ֔ים הָאֹ֣כְלִ֔ים אֵ֖ת הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ פַּתְבַּ֥ג min- ū·miq·ṣāṯ ‘ă·śā·rāh yā·mîm nir·’āh mar·’ê·hem ṭō·wḇ ū·ḇə·rî·’ê bā·śār kāl- hay·lā·ḏîm hā·’ō·ḵə·lîm ’êṯ ham·me·leḵ paṯ·baḡ — WLC · 15

So the steward continued to withhold their choice food and the wine they were to drink, and he gave them vegetables [instead].

Daniel’s Wisdom

To these four young men God gave knowledge and understanding in every kind of literature and wisdom. And Daniel had insight into all kinds of visions and dreams.

Now at the end of the time specified by the king -, the chief official presented them to Nebuchadnezzar.
𐤅𐤋𐤌𐤒𐤑𐤕 𐤄𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤋𐤄𐤁𐤉𐤀𐤌 𐤔𐤓 𐤄𐤎𐤓𐤉𐤎𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤉𐤀𐤌 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤍𐤁𐤊𐤃𐤍𐤑𐤓
וּלְמִקְצָת֙ הַיָּמִ֔ים אֲשֶׁר־ אָמַ֥ר הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ לַהֲבִיאָ֑ם שַׂ֣ר הַסָּרִיסִ֔ים וַיְבִיאֵם֙ לִפְנֵ֖י נְבֻכַדְנֶצַּֽר׃ ū·lə·miq·ṣāṯ hay·yā·mîm ’ă·šer- ’ā·mar ham·me·leḵ la·hă·ḇî·’ām śar has·sā·rî·sîm way·ḇî·’êm lip̄·nê nə·ḇu·ḵaḏ·neṣ·ṣar — WLC · 18

And the king spoke with them, and among all [the young men] he found no one equal to Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. So they entered… the king’s service.

הַמֶּלֶךְ֒ וַיְדַבֵּ֣ר אִתָּם֮ מִכֻּלָּ֔ם נִמְצָא֙ וְלֹ֤א כְּדָנִיֵּ֣אל חֲנַנְיָ֔ה מִֽישָׁאֵ֖ל וַעֲזַרְיָ֑ה וַיַּֽעַמְד֖וּ לִפְנֵ֥י הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ ham·me·leḵ way·ḏab·bêr ’it·tām mik·kul·lām nim·ṣā wə·lō kə·ḏā·nî·yêl ḥă·nan·yāh mî·šā·’êl wa·‘ă·zar·yāh way·ya·‘am·ḏū lip̄·nê ham·me·leḵ — WLC · 19

In every matter of wisdom and understanding about which the king consulted them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and enchanters in his entire kingdom.

וְכֹ֗ל דְּבַר֙ חָכְמַ֣ת בִּינָ֔ה אֲשֶׁר־ הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ בִּקֵּ֥שׁ מֵהֶ֖ם וַֽיִּמְצָאֵ֞ם עֶ֣שֶׂר יָד֗וֹת עַ֤ל כָּל־ הָֽאַשָּׁפִ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֖ר הַֽחַרְטֻמִּים֙ בְּכָל־ מַלְכוּתֽוֹ׃ wə·ḵōl də·ḇar ḥā·ḵə·maṯ bî·nāh ’ă·šer- ham·me·leḵ biq·qêš mê·hem way·yim·ṣā·’êm ‘e·śer yā·ḏō·wṯ ‘al kāl- hā·’aš·šā·p̄îm ’ă·šer ha·ḥar·ṭum·mîm bə·ḵāl mal·ḵū·ṯōw — WLC · 20

And Daniel remained there until the first year of King Cyrus.
