Daniel’s Prayer for His People
1
In the first year of Darius son of Xerxes, a Mede by descent, who was made ruler over the kingdom of the Chaldeans
𐤀𐤇𐤕 𐤁𐤔𐤍𐤕 𐤋𐤃𐤓𐤉𐤅𐤔 𐤁𐤍 𐤀𐤇𐤔𐤅𐤓𐤅𐤔 𐤌𐤃𐤉 𐤌𐤆𐤓𐤏 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤏𐤋 𐤌𐤋𐤊𐤅𐤕 𐤊𐤔𐤃𐤉𐤌
אַחַ֗ת בִּשְׁנַ֣ת לְדָרְיָ֛וֶשׁ בֶּן־ אֲחַשְׁוֵר֖וֹשׁ מָדָ֑י מִזֶּ֣רַע אֲשֶׁ֣ר הָמְלַ֔ךְ עַ֖ל מַלְכ֥וּת כַּשְׂדִּֽים׃ ’a·ḥaṯ biš·naṯ lə·ḏā·rə·yā·weš ben- ’ă·ḥaš·wê·rō·wōš mā·ḏāy miz·ze·ra‘ ’ă·šer hā·mə·laḵ ‘al mal·ḵūṯ kaś·dîm — WLC · 1

in the first year of his reign, I, Daniel, understood from the sacred books - -, according to the word of the LORD to Jeremiah the prophet, that the desolation of Jerusalem would last seventy years.

אַחַת֙ בִּשְׁנַ֤ת לְמָלְכ֔וֹ אֲנִי֙ דָּֽנִיֵּ֔אל בִּינֹ֖תִי בַּסְּפָרִ֑ים מִסְפַּ֣ר הַשָּׁנִ֗ים אֲשֶׁ֨ר הָיָ֤ה דְבַר־ יְהוָה֙ אֶל־ יִרְמִיָ֣ה הַנָּבִ֔יא לְחָרְב֥וֹת יְרוּשָׁלִַ֖ם לְמַלֹּ֛אות שִׁבְעִ֥ים שָׁנָֽה׃ ’a·ḥaṯ biš·naṯ lə·mā·lə·ḵōw ’ă·nî dā·nî·yêl bî·nō·ṯî bas·sə·p̄ā·rîm mis·par haš·šā·nîm ’ă·šer hā·yāh ḏə·ḇar- Yah·weh ’el- yir·mi·yāh han·nā·ḇî lə·ḥā·rə·ḇō·wṯ yə·rū·šā·lim lə·mal·lō·wṯ šiḇ·‘îm šā·nāh — WLC · 2

So I turned my attention - to the Lord God to seek Him by prayer and petition, with fasting, sackcloth, and ashes.

וָאֶתְּנָ֣ה אֶת־ פָּנַ֗י אֶל־ אֲדֹנָי֙ הָֽאֱלֹהִ֔ים לְבַקֵּ֥שׁ תְּפִלָּ֖ה וְתַחֲנוּנִ֑ים בְּצ֖וֹם וְשַׂ֥ק וָאֵֽפֶר׃ wā·’et·tə·nāh ’eṯ- pā·nay ’el- ’ă·ḏō·nāy hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm lə·ḇaq·qêš tə·p̄il·lāh wə·ṯa·ḥă·nū·nîm bə·ṣō·wm wə·śaq wā·’ê·p̄er — WLC · 3

And I prayed to the LORD my God and confessed…, “O, Lord, the great and awesome God, who keeps His covenant of loving devotion to those who love Him and keep His commandments,
𐤅𐤀𐤕𐤐𐤋𐤋𐤄 𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉 𐤅𐤀𐤕𐤅𐤃𐤄 𐤅𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤄 𐤀𐤍𐤀 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤄𐤂𐤃𐤅𐤋 𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤅𐤓𐤀 𐤄𐤀𐤋 𐤔𐤌𐤓 𐤄𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤕 𐤅𐤄𐤇𐤎𐤃 𐤋𐤀𐤄𐤁𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤋𐤔𐤌𐤓𐤉 𐤌𐤑𐤅𐤕𐤉𐤅
וָֽאֶתְפַּֽלְלָ֛ה לַיהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהַ֖י וָאֶתְוַדֶּ֑ה וָאֹֽמְרָ֗ה אָנָּ֤א אֲדֹנָי֙ הַגָּדוֹל֙ וְהַנּוֹרָ֔א הָאֵ֤ל שֹׁמֵ֤ר הַבְּרִית֙ וְֽהַחֶ֔סֶד לְאֹהֲבָ֖יו וּלְשֹׁמְרֵ֥י מִצְוֺתָֽיו׃ wā·’eṯ·pal·lāh Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hay wā·’eṯ·wad·deh wā·’ō·mə·rāh ’ān·nā ’ă·ḏō·nāy hag·gā·ḏō·wl wə·han·nō·w·rā hā·’êl šō·mêr hab·bə·rîṯ wə·ha·ḥe·seḏ lə·’ō·hă·ḇāw ū·lə·šō·mə·rê miṣ·wō·ṯāw — WLC · 4

we have sinned and done wrong. We have acted wickedly and rebelled. We have turned away from Your commandments and ordinances.

חָטָ֥אנוּ וְעָוִ֖ינוּ וְהִרְשַׁעְנוּ וּמָרָ֑דְנוּ וְס֥וֹר מִמִּצְוֺתֶ֖ךָ וּמִמִּשְׁפָּטֶֽיךָ׃ ḥā·ṭā·nū wə·‘ā·wî·nū wə·hir·šaʿ·nū ū·mā·rā·ḏə·nū wə·sō·wr mim·miṣ·wō·ṯe·ḵā ū·mim·miš·pā·ṭe·ḵā — WLC · 5

We have not listened to Your servants the prophets, who spoke in Your name to our kings, leaders, fathers, and all the people of the land.

וְלֹ֤א שָׁמַ֙עְנוּ֙ אֶל־ עֲבָדֶ֣יךָ הַנְּבִיאִ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֤ר דִּבְּרוּ֙ בְּשִׁמְךָ֔ אֶל־ מְלָכֵ֥ינוּ שָׂרֵ֖ינוּ וַאֲבֹתֵ֑ינוּ וְאֶ֖ל כָּל־ עַ֥ם הָאָֽרֶץ׃ wə·lō šā·ma‘·nū ’el- ‘ă·ḇā·ḏe·ḵā han·nə·ḇî·’îm ’ă·šer dib·bə·rū bə·šim·ḵā ’el- mə·lā·ḵê·nū śā·rê·nū wa·’ă·ḇō·ṯê·nū wə·’el kāl- ‘am hā·’ā·reṣ — WLC · 6

To You, O Lord, [belongs] righteousness but this day we are covered with shame— the men of Judah, the people of Jerusalem, and all Israel near and far, in all the countries to which You have driven us… because of our unfaithfulness to You.

לְךָ֤ אֲדֹנָי֙ הַצְּדָקָ֔ה וְלָ֛נוּ הַזֶּ֑ה כַּיּ֣וֹם הַפָּנִ֖ים בֹּ֥שֶׁת לְאִ֤ישׁ יְהוּדָה֙ וּלְיוֹשְׁבֵ֣י יְרֽוּשָׁלִַ֔ם וּֽלְכָל־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֞ל הַקְּרֹבִ֣ים וְהָרְחֹקִ֗ים בְּכָל־ הָֽאֲרָצוֹת֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר הִדַּחְתָּ֣ם שָׁ֔ם בְּמַעֲלָ֖ם אֲשֶׁ֥ר מָֽעֲלוּ־ בָֽךְ׃ lə·ḵā ’ă·ḏō·nāy haṣ·ṣə·ḏā·qāh wə·lā·nū haz·zeh kay·yō·wm hap·pā·nîm bō·šeṯ lə·’îš yə·hū·ḏāh ū·lə·yō·wō·šə·ḇê yə·rū·šā·lim ū·lə·ḵāl- yiś·rā·’êl haq·qə·rō·ḇîm wə·hā·rə·ḥō·qîm bə·ḵāl hā·’ă·rā·ṣō·wṯ ’ă·šer hid·daḥ·tām šām bə·ma·‘ă·lām ’ă·šer mā·‘ă·lū- ḇāḵ — WLC · 7

O LORD, we are covered with shame— our kings, our leaders, and our fathers— because we have sinned against You.

יְהוָ֗ה לָ֚נוּ הַפָּנִ֔ים בֹּ֣שֶׁת לִמְלָכֵ֥ינוּ לְשָׂרֵ֖ינוּ וְלַאֲבֹתֵ֑ינוּ אֲשֶׁ֥ר חָטָ֖אנוּ לָֽךְ׃ Yah·weh lā·nū hap·pā·nîm bō·šeṯ lim·lā·ḵê·nū lə·śā·rê·nū wə·la·’ă·ḇō·ṯê·nū ’ă·šer ḥā·ṭā·nū lāḵ — WLC · 8

To the Lord our God [belong] compassion and forgiveness, even though we have rebelled against Him
𐤋𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤄𐤓𐤇𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤎𐤋𐤇𐤅𐤕 𐤊𐤉 𐤌𐤓𐤃𐤍𐤅 𐤁𐤅
לַֽאדֹנָ֣י אֱלֹהֵ֔ינוּ הָרַחֲמִ֖ים וְהַסְּלִח֑וֹת כִּ֥י מָרַ֖דְנוּ בּֽוֹ׃ la·ḏō·nāy ’ĕ·lō·hê·nū hā·ra·ḥă·mîm wə·has·sə·li·ḥō·wṯ kî mā·raḏ·nū bōw — WLC · 9

and have not obeyed the voice of the LORD our God to walk in His laws, which He set before us through His servants the prophets.
𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤍𐤅 𐤁𐤒𐤅𐤋 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤋𐤋𐤊𐤕 𐤁𐤕𐤅𐤓𐤕𐤉𐤅 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤍𐤕𐤍 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤁𐤉𐤃 𐤏𐤁𐤃𐤉𐤅 𐤄𐤍𐤁𐤉𐤀𐤉𐤌
וְלֹ֣א שָׁמַ֔עְנוּ בְּק֖וֹל יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֵ֑ינוּ לָלֶ֤כֶת בְּתֽוֹרֹתָיו֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר נָתַ֣ן לְפָנֵ֔ינוּ בְּיַ֖ד עֲבָדָ֥יו הַנְּבִיאִֽים׃ wə·lō šā·ma‘·nū bə·qō·wl Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê·nū lā·le·ḵeṯ bə·ṯō·w·rō·ṯāw ’ă·šer nā·ṯan lə·p̄ā·nê·nū bə·yaḏ ‘ă·ḇā·ḏāw han·nə·ḇî·’îm — WLC · 10

All Israel has transgressed Your law and turned away, refusing to obey Your voice; so the oath and the curse written in the Law of Moses the servant of God has been poured out on us, because we have sinned against You.

וְכָל־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל עָֽבְרוּ֙ אֶת־ תּ֣וֹרָתֶ֔ךָ וְס֕וֹר לְבִלְתִּ֖י שְׁמ֣וֹעַ בְּקֹלֶ֑ךָ הָאָלָ֣ה וְהַשְּׁבֻעָ֗ה אֲשֶׁ֤ר כְּתוּבָה֙ בְּתוֹרַת֙ מֹשֶׁ֣ה עֶֽבֶד־ הָֽאֱלֹהִ֔ים וַתִּתַּ֨ךְ עָלֵ֜ינוּ כִּ֥י חָטָ֖אנוּ לֽוֹ׃ wə·ḵāl yiś·rā·’êl ‘ā·ḇə·rū ’eṯ- tō·w·rā·ṯe·ḵā wə·sō·wr lə·ḇil·tî šə·mō·w·a‘ bə·qō·le·ḵā hā·’ā·lāh wə·haš·šə·ḇu·‘āh ’ă·šer kə·ṯū·ḇāh bə·ṯō·w·raṯ mō·šeh ‘e·ḇeḏ- hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm wat·tit·taḵ ‘ā·lê·nū kî ḥā·ṭā·nū lōw — WLC · 11

You have carried out the words spoken against us and against our rulers - by bringing upon us a great disaster. For under all of heaven, nothing has ever been done like what has been done to Jerusalem.
𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤅 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤅𐤏𐤋 𐤔𐤐𐤈𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤔𐤐𐤈𐤅𐤍𐤅 𐤋𐤄𐤁𐤉𐤀 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤂𐤃𐤋𐤄 𐤓𐤏𐤄 𐤕𐤇𐤕 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤋𐤀 𐤍𐤏𐤔𐤕𐤄 𐤊𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤍𐤏𐤔𐤕𐤄 𐤁𐤉𐤓𐤅𐤔𐤋𐤌
וַיָּ֜קֶם אֶת־ דְּבָרָיו אֲשֶׁר־ דִּבֶּ֣ר עָלֵ֗ינוּ וְעַ֤ל שֹֽׁפְטֵ֙ינוּ֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר שְׁפָט֔וּנוּ לְהָבִ֥יא עָלֵ֖ינוּ גְדֹלָ֑ה רָעָ֣ה תַּ֚חַת כָּל־ הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם אֲשֶׁ֣ר לֹֽא־ נֶעֶשְׂתָ֗ה כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר נֶעֶשְׂתָ֖ה בִּירוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ way·yā·qem ’eṯ- də·ḇå̄·rå̄w ’ă·šer- dib·ber ‘ā·lê·nū wə·‘al šō·p̄ə·ṭê·nū ’ă·šer šə·p̄ā·ṭū·nū lə·hā·ḇî ‘ā·lê·nū ḡə·ḏō·lāh rā·‘āh ta·ḥaṯ kāl- haš·šā·ma·yim ’ă·šer lō- ne·‘eś·ṯāh ka·’ă·šer ne·‘eś·ṯāh bî·rū·šā·lim — WLC · 12

Just as it is written in the Law of Moses, all this disaster has come upon us, yet we have not sought the favor… of the LORD our God by turning from our iniquities and giving attention to Your truth.

כַּאֲשֶׁ֤ר כָּתוּב֙ בְּתוֹרַ֣ת מֹשֶׁ֔ה אֵ֛ת כָּל־ הַזֹּ֖את הָרָעָ֥ה בָּ֣אָה עָלֵ֑ינוּ וְלֹֽא־ חִלִּ֜ינוּ אֶת־ פְּנֵ֣י׀ יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֵ֗ינוּ לָשׁוּב֙ מֵֽעֲוֺנֵ֔נוּ וּלְהַשְׂכִּ֖יל בַּאֲמִתֶּֽךָ׃ ka·’ă·šer kā·ṯūḇ bə·ṯō·w·raṯ mō·šeh ’êṯ kāl- haz·zōṯ hā·rā·‘āh bā·’āh ‘ā·lê·nū wə·lō- ḥil·lî·nū ’eṯ- pə·nê Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê·nū lā·šūḇ mê·‘ă·wō·nê·nū ū·lə·haś·kîl ba·’ă·mit·te·ḵā — WLC · 13

Therefore the LORD has kept the calamity in store and brought it upon us. For the LORD our God is righteous in all… He does; yet we have not obeyed His voice.

יְהוָה֙ הָ֣רָעָ֔ה עַל־ וַיִּשְׁקֹ֤ד וַיְבִיאֶ֖הָ עָלֵ֑ינוּ כִּֽי־ יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֵ֗ינוּ צַדִּ֞יק עַל־ כָּל־ מַֽעֲשָׂיו֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר עָשָׂ֔ה וְלֹ֥א שָׁמַ֖עְנוּ בְּקֹלֽוֹ׃ Yah·weh hā·rā·‘āh ‘al- way·yiš·qōḏ way·ḇî·’e·hā ‘ā·lê·nū kî- Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê·nū ṣad·dîq ‘al- kāl- ma·‘ă·śāw ’ă·šer ‘ā·śāh wə·lō šā·ma‘·nū bə·qō·lōw — WLC · 14

Now, O Lord our God, who brought Your people out of the land of Egypt with a mighty hand, and who made for Yourself a name renowned to this day, we have sinned; we have acted wickedly.

O Lord, in keeping with all Your righteous acts, I pray that Your anger and wrath may turn away from Your city Jerusalem, Your holy mountain; for because of our sins and the iniquities of our fathers, Jerusalem and Your people [are] a reproach to all around us.

Gabriel’s Prophecy of the Seventy Weeks

While I was speaking, praying, confessing my sin and [that] of my people Israel, and presenting my petition before the LORD my God concerning [His] holy mountain—

while I was still praying…, Gabriel, the man I had seen in the earlier… vision, came to me in swift flight about the time of the evening sacrifice.

He instructed [me] and spoke with me, saying: “O Daniel, I have come now to give you insight and understanding.

At the beginning of your petitions, an answer went out, and I have come to tell [you], for you [are] highly precious. So consider the message and understand the vision:

Know and understand this: From the issuance of the decree to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until the Messiah, the Prince, there will be seven weeks and sixty-two… weeks. It will be rebuilt… with streets and a trench, but in times of distress.

Then after the sixty-two… weeks the Messiah will be cut off and will have nothing Then the people of the prince who is to come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. The end will come like a flood, and until the end there will be war; desolations have been decreed.

And he will confirm a covenant with many for one week, but in the middle of the week he will put an end to sacrifice and offering. And on the wing [of the temple] [will come] the abomination that causes desolation, until the decreed destruction is poured out upon [him].
